Welcome back and I'm delighted to be talking 00:00:01.18\00:00:04.26 to Pastor Julian, here in Tirana, Albania. 00:00:04.29\00:00:09.12 Summers day, sun is coming down 00:00:09.15\00:00:11.67 and Pastor Julian, you were one of the founding members 00:00:11.70\00:00:14.78 of the Adventist church here in this country. 00:00:14.81\00:00:16.78 In fact, you were one of the first ordained 00:00:16.81\00:00:19.95 Seventh-day Adventist pastors. 00:00:19.98\00:00:22.30 We're standing in front of this building, describe it 00:00:22.33\00:00:24.44 and tell me the significance of it to you. 00:00:24.47\00:00:27.36 Okay, this building is very, very significant. 00:00:27.39\00:00:31.51 It's personal but it also much more than that. 00:00:31.54\00:00:34.23 This building here, we call it the pyramids. 00:00:34.26\00:00:36.16 Yes. 00:00:36.19\00:00:37.52 But it was build originally 00:00:37.55\00:00:38.90 in the late '80s as a memory for the legacy 00:00:38.93\00:00:42.94 of our communist dictator, Enver Hoxha. 00:00:42.97\00:00:46.39 He is infamous all around the world 00:00:46.42\00:00:48.88 and notorious because he is the author 00:00:48.91\00:00:51.60 of banning religion completely, from this-- 00:00:51.63\00:00:54.31 Albania becoming the first atheist country in the world. 00:00:54.34\00:00:57.41 And it's very ironic and iconic, 00:00:57.44\00:01:00.15 I would say that in this very first, 00:01:00.18\00:01:02.87 very building, in this very building 00:01:02.90\00:01:06.20 that we have had the evangelistic meetings, 00:01:06.23\00:01:09.33 the very first ones, were run by, 00:01:09.36\00:01:10.90 pastor David Currie, from Australia 00:01:10.93\00:01:13.63 and this is the meeting were Meropi Gjika, 00:01:13.66\00:01:18.35 probably you know the famous story, 00:01:18.38\00:01:20.00 I think all around the world her story is well known, 00:01:20.03\00:01:23.25 and I also got baptized in this very building, inside. 00:01:23.28\00:01:26.30 Okay, now this story, this was a lady 00:01:26.33\00:01:28.65 who had remained faithful through the years of communism, 00:01:28.68\00:01:32.55 well, just tell us briefly the story. 00:01:32.58\00:01:34.32 Her story was where it became famous 00:01:34.35\00:01:35.84 in the GC session in 1995, 00:01:35.87\00:01:38.44 but I think it's time may be for the, 00:01:38.47\00:01:39.95 even for the younger generation of Adventists 00:01:39.98\00:01:42.93 to know her story because it's a beautiful story. 00:01:42.96\00:01:46.00 Here is a lady, she was a member of the Daniel Lewis 00:01:46.03\00:01:50.22 small group back in the '30s, 00:01:50.25\00:01:52.50 and when he became a martyr, you know, in the '50s, 00:01:52.53\00:01:55.72 he was tortured by the communist regime. 00:01:55.75\00:01:57.40 She kept seeing him in prison. 00:01:57.43\00:01:59.04 She loved the Lord, 00:01:59.07\00:02:00.13 but, you know, Daniel was a pharmacist, 00:02:00.16\00:02:02.26 he was not an ordained minister. 00:02:02.29\00:02:03.48 Right. 00:02:03.51\00:02:04.54 So she couldn't get baptized 00:02:04.57\00:02:07.10 and she waited 45, 47 years to be exact, 00:02:07.13\00:02:12.41 for the day until she could get baptized here 00:02:12.44\00:02:16.19 she was baptized by David Currie. 00:02:16.22\00:02:18.38 Not just that, she waited for 45 years, 00:02:18.41\00:02:21.69 she collected her tithe regularly, every month 00:02:21.72\00:02:25.90 and she handed it 00:02:25.93\00:02:27.00 into the general conference officials 00:02:27.03\00:02:29.71 back in 1992, a very touching story. 00:02:29.74\00:02:32.48 So she just kept storing it away through those years. 00:02:32.51\00:02:34.84 She kept storing it away. 00:02:34.87\00:02:35.95 With that money at that time in Albania, 00:02:35.98\00:02:37.89 she could have bought a beautiful villa 00:02:37.92\00:02:40.28 anywhere they liked, 00:02:40.31\00:02:42.29 but she was so faithful to the Lord. 00:02:42.32\00:02:44.65 And she said you know I have these three dreams, 00:02:44.68\00:02:46.82 I want to return the tithe to the church, 00:02:46.85\00:02:49.68 to the Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:02:49.71\00:02:51.15 to my church, I want to get baptized, 00:02:51.18\00:02:54.07 and I want to see a church built in Tirana. 00:02:54.10\00:02:55.83 Wonderful, now you were attending the meetings, 00:02:55.86\00:02:59.60 you started doing Bible studies, 00:02:59.63\00:03:01.45 but it was her baptism 00:03:01.48\00:03:02.72 that really influenced you, what happened? 00:03:02.75\00:03:04.88 Absolutely, I was from the very beginning, 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.80 I was fascinated by the Amazing Discoveries series. 00:03:07.83\00:03:12.57 It was just beautiful, 00:03:12.60\00:03:13.70 I was-- I accepted all the doctrines 00:03:13.73\00:03:16.10 but you know, there was something, 00:03:16.13\00:03:17.16 when you are a first generation Adventist, 00:03:17.19\00:03:18.82 when you hear those names seventh day Adventist, 00:03:18.85\00:03:21.57 it seems a little bit lets say bizarre or a bit strange. 00:03:21.60\00:03:25.35 Right. You know. 00:03:25.38\00:03:27.45 So I had some misgivings, 00:03:27.48\00:03:29.44 you know, like I should I get baptized. 00:03:29.47\00:03:31.30 So I was very close 00:03:31.33\00:03:32.38 but I had not made the final decision. 00:03:32.41\00:03:34.19 But I was there on the 18th of April, 1992 00:03:34.22\00:03:37.41 and I was right there in this building inside 00:03:37.44\00:03:40.77 and when David introduced her in front of all of us 00:03:40.80\00:03:45.86 and I was just there, I was 2 meters away from her, 00:03:45.89\00:03:49.64 from the baptistery, and when I saw her 00:03:49.67\00:03:53.70 praising the Lord with her face, 00:03:53.73\00:03:55.93 you know, up to the heavens and just like that 00:03:55.96\00:03:58.45 and saying, praise be and glory to the King, 00:03:58.48\00:04:00.99 I waited 45 years for this day, 00:04:01.02\00:04:03.90 I was like, wow, this lady, there must be, 00:04:03.93\00:04:07.68 if she waited that long, 00:04:07.71\00:04:09.54 there must be something very special about this church, 00:04:09.57\00:04:11.97 this must be the true church of God, 00:04:12.00\00:04:14.19 I'll better join this church sooner or later, 00:04:14.22\00:04:16.65 then I was baptized in next, the following Sabbath. 00:04:16.68\00:04:19.12 Amazing. 00:04:19.15\00:04:20.20 Beautiful story and I was, we were all crying. 00:04:20.23\00:04:23.19 It was probably the first time I was really crying 00:04:23.22\00:04:25.63 like a little baby, I was a teenager at that time. 00:04:25.66\00:04:28.64 Very touching story. 00:04:28.67\00:04:29.87 Yeah. 00:04:29.90\00:04:30.95 And that's what made me, 00:04:30.98\00:04:33.09 well who I am now and we're all shaped 00:04:33.12\00:04:35.05 and we all learn from her example. 00:04:35.08\00:04:37.12 Wonderful, wonderful story. 00:04:37.15\00:04:38.63 Now, Julian, you grew up as a kid 00:04:38.66\00:04:41.23 in an environment where atheism was a religion, 00:04:41.26\00:04:43.81 what was that like? 00:04:43.84\00:04:45.82 It was very strange. 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.10 You know, very interesting 00:04:47.13\00:04:48.72 because in school we learned about evolution 00:04:48.75\00:04:51.25 and there is no God and all these are fairy tales, 00:04:51.28\00:04:53.95 and stupid stories, and then so on and so forth. 00:04:53.98\00:04:57.88 You know, my mom, very interestingly, 00:04:57.91\00:04:59.87 very secretly, even though 00:04:59.90\00:05:00.94 she was a math and physics teacher, 00:05:00.97\00:05:02.92 she would tell me secretly, look there is a God, 00:05:02.95\00:05:05.51 don't listen to the communists. 00:05:05.54\00:05:06.92 Now she was, profoundly was persecuted 00:05:06.95\00:05:09.13 by the communist regime, but it was a very strange, 00:05:09.16\00:05:13.43 it was, it felt like there was something lacking, 00:05:13.46\00:05:16.13 you know, in your life. 00:05:16.16\00:05:17.85 Growing, it's like you are empty. 00:05:17.88\00:05:19.56 There is no, you're just, 00:05:19.59\00:05:21.04 you feel like we are all like animals-- 00:05:21.07\00:05:23.58 You know, apes and survival of the fittest 00:05:23.61\00:05:26.76 that kind of thing, 00:05:26.79\00:05:28.17 and then, you know, it was difficult 00:05:28.20\00:05:32.08 and you see the consequences, and the long transition, 00:05:32.11\00:05:35.18 the corruption, the organized crime that 00:05:35.21\00:05:37.44 they have plagued this country for decades. 00:05:37.47\00:05:39.74 There is a direct consequence 00:05:39.77\00:05:41.57 of that lack of the fear of God. 00:05:41.60\00:05:44.92 You know, for all those 30, 40 years 00:05:44.95\00:05:46.78 when Albania was staunchly atheistic. 00:05:46.81\00:05:49.84 So when you see the popularity 00:05:49.87\00:05:52.31 of the new atheists at the moment, 00:05:52.34\00:05:54.63 how do you react with your background? 00:05:54.66\00:05:57.19 You know, it's, for me it's just so sad 00:05:57.22\00:06:00.66 to see this new, this new atheism, 00:06:00.69\00:06:03.92 the movement and so on and so forth, 00:06:03.95\00:06:05.64 it has brought nothing but you know, destruction, 00:06:05.67\00:06:10.42 tears, pain, disillusionment, corruption. 00:06:10.45\00:06:14.91 It's brought the worst I think that 00:06:14.94\00:06:16.54 the human nature can bring about, 00:06:16.57\00:06:18.87 and it's just something that, 00:06:18.90\00:06:21.57 it's very sad and we never want to see, 00:06:21.60\00:06:23.79 no Albanian wants to go back to those years. 00:06:23.82\00:06:27.13 When there was no God present in the society, 00:06:27.16\00:06:29.56 where you see churches 00:06:29.59\00:06:30.79 being burnt and being destroyed. 00:06:30.82\00:06:34.72 When you imprison people because they read the Bible 00:06:34.75\00:06:38.45 and that's just something awful 00:06:38.48\00:06:40.06 and there's so much loss in humanity 00:06:40.09\00:06:43.02 from that kind of horrible ideology. 00:06:43.05\00:06:45.09 Right. 00:06:45.12\00:06:46.66 Julian, you're the secretary of the Albanian mission. 00:06:46.69\00:06:49.81 You're one of only two ordained 00:06:49.84\00:06:52.41 Seventh-day Adventists pastors working in this country. 00:06:52.44\00:06:55.89 What is your hope and dream for this country? 00:06:55.92\00:07:00.35 My dream is very similar, 00:07:00.38\00:07:02.60 it resembles Maropi Gjika's dream. 00:07:02.63\00:07:05.46 To have a beautiful, blossoming church here, 00:07:05.49\00:07:07.81 to extend the kingdom of God in this country, 00:07:07.84\00:07:09.92 which so badly, I think more than 00:07:09.95\00:07:11.86 any other place in Europe, needs God 00:07:11.89\00:07:15.44 because it's been so dried up. 00:07:15.47\00:07:18.56 It's been so, it's been really so thirsty for the word of God, 00:07:18.59\00:07:25.74 and I want to see the church grow, 00:07:25.77\00:07:27.45 we have the youngest church in Europe, 00:07:27.48\00:07:30.79 probably in the world, in terms of our membership. 00:07:30.82\00:07:35.29 We are very encouraged to see a growing lay, 00:07:35.32\00:07:38.31 active lay members, membership movement, 00:07:38.34\00:07:41.91 and we are so thrilled to continue to work here, 00:07:41.94\00:07:45.96 to have church in every major town 00:07:45.99\00:07:48.15 and then to extend all around the country, 00:07:48.18\00:07:50.92 and where we can take the third, the three, 00:07:50.95\00:07:53.09 I mean we can take the Three Angels message. 00:07:53.12\00:07:55.85 Fantastic, thank you so much. 00:07:55.88\00:07:58.13 And please continue to remember church leaders, pastors, 00:07:58.16\00:08:01.89 lay people, here in Albania in your prayers, 00:08:01.92\00:08:04.74 and you know they have many challenges 00:08:04.77\00:08:07.46 and they need a world church that is praying for them, 00:08:07.49\00:08:09.96 next stop lets go to the country of Belize. 00:08:09.99\00:08:13.12 On this Sabbath in northern Belize, 00:08:17.37\00:08:19.69 police have setup a checkpoint 00:08:19.72\00:08:21.05 in front of the Adventist church. 00:08:21.08\00:08:23.57 Their church sits right along the busiest road in town. 00:08:23.60\00:08:28.92 A group of church members have planned 00:08:28.95\00:08:30.56 something special to reach out to their community, 00:08:30.59\00:08:33.42 and the traffic stop plays an important role. 00:08:33.45\00:08:37.49 It's not a big city, 00:08:37.52\00:08:38.70 but this is where the most cars and pedestrians pass by. 00:08:38.73\00:08:43.07 Since this the traffic hotspot of the area, 00:08:43.10\00:08:45.38 sometimes the police have checkpoints. 00:08:45.41\00:08:48.01 They will check for seat belts, registration, 00:08:48.04\00:08:50.21 and any thing else regarding the driver's safety. 00:08:50.24\00:08:52.57 But this is not an ordinary traffic checkpoint. 00:08:52.60\00:08:55.95 The church members use this as an opportunity 00:08:55.98\00:08:58.26 to share about Jesus. 00:08:58.29\00:09:00.92 As the police stop the cars, the church members pass out 00:09:00.95\00:09:04.11 Christian magazines and books. 00:09:04.14\00:09:06.53 Young and old take part in this activity. 00:09:06.56\00:09:09.84 Drivers are pleasantly surprised 00:09:09.87\00:09:11.99 as they stop and receive an unexpected gift. 00:09:12.02\00:09:16.30 The drivers also have an opportunity to pullover 00:09:16.33\00:09:18.79 and enjoy a free concert 00:09:18.82\00:09:20.10 put on by the churches path-finder club. 00:09:20.13\00:09:23.34 Many enjoy this unique event and the cars are piling up. 00:09:23.37\00:09:28.02 The Adventist group working along side the path finders 00:09:28.05\00:09:30.44 is called Manos Del Rey or Hands of the King. 00:09:30.47\00:09:35.06 Manos Del Rey was started as an outreach group in Belize. 00:09:35.09\00:09:38.83 They build churches, hold community events 00:09:38.86\00:09:41.66 and do whatever it takes to share about Jesus. 00:09:41.69\00:09:45.40 The members in this group range in age groups. 00:09:45.43\00:09:48.36 Ronaldo, Jeremy, and Redalpho are cousins. 00:09:48.39\00:09:51.74 They love being part of Manos Del Rey. 00:09:51.77\00:09:54.85 During the week they love to swim, play soccer, 00:09:54.88\00:09:57.97 and be a part of other events like these. 00:09:58.00\00:10:01.12 These boys have fun passing out magazines to drivers. 00:10:01.15\00:10:07.84 It doesn't matter if it's a small car or a huge truck. 00:10:07.87\00:10:11.87 Ronaldo, is eager to make sure 00:10:11.90\00:10:13.51 people have the opportunity to hear about Jesus. 00:10:13.54\00:10:17.11 Even though some people refuse 00:10:17.14\00:10:18.86 to take the magazines, Ronaldo is not discouraged. 00:10:18.89\00:10:22.56 He continues to work with enthusiasm. 00:10:22.59\00:10:25.84 He even makes sure the police officers 00:10:25.87\00:10:28.19 have magazines to take home with them. 00:10:28.22\00:10:31.13 This is just one of many events the group plans. 00:10:31.16\00:10:34.67 It involves everyone in the important task 00:10:34.70\00:10:37.01 of reaching the heats of the Belizean people. 00:10:37.04\00:10:39.60 As a result of events like these, 00:10:39.63\00:10:42.26 many people have come to know Jesus 00:10:42.29\00:10:44.09 and are
