Welcome, back next stop 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.57 Rick Kajiura talks with Pastor Antonio Montero, 00:00:02.60\00:00:05.63 who shares some of his experience 00:00:05.66\00:00:07.70 of being in Toga Jail. 00:00:07.73\00:00:10.67 Our guess today is Pastor Antonio Montero. 00:00:10.70\00:00:14.28 Pastor Montero was imprisoned in Togo 00:00:14.31\00:00:18.09 for a crime that he did not commit, 00:00:18.12\00:00:20.57 he spent 22 months in prison. 00:00:20.60\00:00:23.11 People around the world were praying for him 00:00:23.14\00:00:24.90 and we're happy that he's been released 00:00:24.93\00:00:26.36 and he's with us today. 00:00:26.39\00:00:28.27 But the other day Pastor Montero said something. 00:00:28.30\00:00:30.38 He said, I wasn't in prison, 00:00:30.41\00:00:32.44 I wasn't a prisoner, I was on a mission. 00:00:32.47\00:00:36.01 So Pastor Montero, I'd like to talk to you a little bit about, 00:00:36.04\00:00:39.57 what your mission was in that prison? 00:00:39.60\00:00:42.99 What was it that you were doing 00:00:43.02\00:00:45.69 in the prison to minister to people around you? 00:00:45.72\00:00:48.11 It's true I considered myself a missionary in prison. 00:00:59.04\00:01:03.84 An innocent missionary for a time in prison. 00:01:03.87\00:01:07.58 I never looked at myself as a prisoner, 00:01:07.61\00:01:09.62 but as someone doing mission work. 00:01:09.65\00:01:14.07 I would preach in my prison cell 00:01:14.10\00:01:15.49 and give Bible studies every Tuesday and every Thursday. 00:01:15.52\00:01:19.35 And many of the people would accompany me to church. 00:01:19.38\00:01:23.27 There was a place where we would 00:01:23.30\00:01:24.33 gather together on Saturdays, 00:01:24.36\00:01:25.88 I would preach to them each Sabbath. 00:01:25.91\00:01:30.98 Also on Tuesday's between 10 and 11 in the morning 00:01:31.01\00:01:33.30 I taught a Bible class. 00:01:33.33\00:01:36.04 Then on Thursdays from 10 to 11 00:01:36.07\00:01:37.79 another Bible class would take place 00:01:37.82\00:01:39.41 to further the knowledge of the baptize prisoners 00:01:39.44\00:01:42.85 and to help others to know the truth 00:01:42.88\00:01:44.83 that leads to eternal life. 00:01:44.86\00:01:48.97 I was able to distribute a lot of pamphlets and books there. 00:01:49.00\00:01:53.88 There were about 400 books given in that, prison 00:01:53.91\00:01:56.80 among these were the Adventist Home 00:01:56.83\00:01:58.74 and the Great Controversy. 00:01:58.77\00:02:02.30 The prisoners would devour these books. 00:02:02.33\00:02:04.09 They had never before had access 00:02:04.12\00:02:05.80 to the Adventist literature 00:02:05.83\00:02:07.56 and above all other books, 00:02:07.59\00:02:09.55 the Adventist Home did wonders inside that prison. 00:02:09.58\00:02:13.81 Many families, many husbands requested this book 00:02:13.84\00:02:16.36 and would mail them to their wives to read. 00:02:16.39\00:02:19.58 As you know this improve their lives a great deal. 00:02:19.61\00:02:24.97 People of different world views 00:02:25.00\00:02:26.29 such as Buddhists, Muslims and others 00:02:26.32\00:02:28.48 they were reading these books 00:02:28.51\00:02:29.82 as quickly as they could get their hands on them. 00:02:29.85\00:02:33.74 I was able to undertake all the services I just mentioned 00:02:33.77\00:02:36.68 and also do better counseling. 00:02:36.71\00:02:40.31 I remember a young man who came to me 00:02:40.34\00:02:42.15 and told me that he had stolen a lot of money, 00:02:42.18\00:02:44.33 but after hearing the messages 00:02:44.36\00:02:45.84 he felt impressed to give the money back that he had stolen. 00:02:45.87\00:02:49.57 I was able to counsel them and to give guidance 00:02:49.60\00:02:51.87 as to how to properly return the stolen money. 00:02:51.90\00:02:55.19 I didn't want him to have any further problems 00:02:55.22\00:02:57.21 so I told him to look for is lawyer 00:02:57.24\00:02:59.02 and to inform him of his decision. 00:02:59.05\00:03:02.50 Then later call the judge and proceed properly 00:03:02.53\00:03:04.80 so we would be protected and not expose himself 00:03:04.83\00:03:07.19 in the hands of the people he stole from. 00:03:07.22\00:03:10.60 I also counseled couples, people who had problems 00:03:10.63\00:03:13.72 and needed someone to talk to in confidence. 00:03:13.75\00:03:17.13 I prayed with people over the phones 00:03:17.16\00:03:18.80 some who I had never seen before. 00:03:18.83\00:03:21.55 Some husbands call their wives and attempted reconciliation. 00:03:21.58\00:03:25.83 They would ask me to pray with them. 00:03:25.86\00:03:28.90 You know, prison has this negative side 00:03:28.93\00:03:31.19 where it destroys the individual 00:03:31.22\00:03:32.56 as well as damaging the family. 00:03:32.59\00:03:35.61 People who spend even a few months in prison 00:03:35.64\00:03:37.48 are in jeopardy losing their family. 00:03:37.51\00:03:40.78 I feel that God utilized me to counsel 00:03:40.81\00:03:42.79 and help a lot of prisoners. 00:03:42.82\00:03:45.45 I remember talking to Togo's former minister of defense 00:03:45.48\00:03:48.62 who was brother to Togo's president. 00:03:48.65\00:03:52.04 He was in prison for five years already 00:03:52.07\00:03:53.83 and sentenced to 20 years. 00:03:53.86\00:03:56.80 I have the opportunity to minister to him 00:03:56.83\00:03:58.72 and to pray with him. 00:03:58.75\00:04:01.54 I presented him a series of DVD's from a local pastor 00:04:01.57\00:04:04.82 and gave him the Great Controversy book 00:04:04.85\00:04:06.76 that he was anxious to receive. 00:04:06.79\00:04:10.28 In this manner I was able to do missionary work even in prison 00:04:10.31\00:04:15.57 and it brought forth positive results 00:04:15.60\00:04:17.60 as we baptize nine people there. 00:04:17.63\00:04:21.20 We celebrated communion for the first time ever in that prison. 00:04:21.23\00:04:25.15 So you can see that God has blessed the work, 00:04:25.18\00:04:28.57 and I believe more fruits will come in the future 00:04:28.60\00:04:30.80 as we will see many more souls saved. 00:04:30.83\00:04:34.49 I will always tell God if this is come to further Your work 00:04:34.52\00:04:37.99 and praise be to the Lord use me to do the work. 00:04:38.02\00:04:41.34 Pastor Montero, many people go through hardships in life. 00:04:50.91\00:04:55.06 What advice would you give to them 00:04:55.09\00:04:57.01 on how to find their mission calling 00:04:57.04\00:05:00.50 and to turn hardship into a mission? 00:05:00.53\00:05:03.52 It's true 00:05:11.29\00:05:12.44 a lot of people in this world go through difficult situation. 00:05:12.47\00:05:17.75 The enemy's main target is destroying the family's, 00:05:17.78\00:05:21.56 thus we see crisis after crisis with the family institution 00:05:21.59\00:05:24.83 but we also see individuals who face challenges, 00:05:24.86\00:05:28.46 difficulties and struggles. 00:05:28.49\00:05:31.61 Sometimes one battles finances, health other times, 00:05:31.64\00:05:34.72 educating their children, unemployment, 00:05:34.75\00:05:36.38 there are a wave of challenges 00:05:36.41\00:05:39.58 and it's natural for people to feel depressed, 00:05:39.61\00:05:41.89 discouraged or even desperate and it's not easy, 00:05:41.92\00:05:46.78 but if you're going through difficult times 00:05:46.81\00:05:48.61 I have to tell you that I went through a trying period. 00:05:48.64\00:05:52.91 For 22 long months my family suffered 00:05:52.94\00:05:55.25 and had to face this crisis for 22 months. 00:05:55.28\00:06:00.00 It wasn't easy at all, 00:06:00.03\00:06:03.19 but I need to tell you that our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:06:03.22\00:06:06.42 He is in control of everything. 00:06:06.45\00:06:09.27 Our God tells us that He will never leave us, 00:06:09.30\00:06:12.61 even if a mother would forget her childrenwho she nourishes 00:06:12.64\00:06:15.62 God would never forget us. 00:06:15.65\00:06:19.45 Right there where you are facing your problem, 00:06:19.48\00:06:23.65 going through heavy turbulence 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.07 lift up your eyes look to God with confidence, 00:06:25.10\00:06:28.02 with faith in prayer in, with determination, 00:06:28.05\00:06:31.51 you will overcome. 00:06:31.54\00:06:34.04 I overcame thanks to prayer and intervention 00:06:34.07\00:06:36.33 with the help others. 00:06:36.36\00:06:38.64 Allow God to unite with you to fight your problems 00:06:38.67\00:06:41.28 and win the fight for in Christ we are more than conquerors. 00:06:41.31\00:06:45.80 Take courage and look to Jesus 00:06:45.83\00:06:47.35 who is the author and finisher of our faith. 00:06:47.38\00:06:50.24 Thank you, Pastor Montero. 00:06:57.23\00:06:59.65 And to you viewers, 00:06:59.68\00:07:01.52 no matter what you're going through 00:07:01.55\00:07:04.23 please turn to God 00:07:04.26\00:07:05.41 because He can help you find the mission in your life. 00:07:05.44\00:07:08.49 When you help others it helps you. 00:07:08.52\00:07:11.15 But please also pray for Pastor Montero and his family, 00:07:11.18\00:07:14.45 and many others who are imprisoned for their faith. 00:07:14.48\00:07:18.44 Sometimes we make the mistake 00:07:18.47\00:07:19.82 of thinking of the mission field 00:07:19.85\00:07:21.31 as being somewhere far away 00:07:21.34\00:07:24.07 however, in reality it also includes 00:07:24.10\00:07:26.68 wherever we as Christ followers live. 00:07:26.71\00:07:29.68 Next let's travel to Indonesia 00:07:29.71\00:07:31.18 to meet Philipus a church planter. 00:07:31.21\00:07:33.43 If you visit this small city in Indonesia 00:07:38.19\00:07:41.19 you'll find a Seventh-day Adventist congregation 00:07:41.22\00:07:43.74 worshiping on top of a hill. 00:07:43.77\00:07:46.46 This church was started because a man named Philipus. 00:07:46.49\00:07:49.96 Philipus was born here in Kaimana 00:07:49.99\00:07:51.93 and he has a heart for mission. 00:07:51.96\00:07:55.58 When he was younger 00:07:55.61\00:07:56.64 Philipus wanted to become a police officer. 00:07:56.67\00:07:59.53 He ventured to other cities 00:07:59.56\00:08:00.89 to get an education and enrolled in police training. 00:08:00.92\00:08:04.26 On his journey he learned about the gospel message 00:08:04.29\00:08:06.68 and became a strong believer. 00:08:06.71\00:08:09.35 The Bible was an important part of his life. 00:08:09.38\00:08:12.44 As he was sleeping one night Philipus had a unique dream. 00:08:12.47\00:08:18.02 I had a dream that told me 00:08:18.05\00:08:20.02 I needed to build a church for my own tribe in Kaimana. 00:08:20.05\00:08:25.50 There were no Adventist in Kaimana, 00:08:25.53\00:08:27.78 but God had impressed him to plant a church. 00:08:27.81\00:08:30.97 He knew this job would be difficult, 00:08:31.00\00:08:33.39 he left police training and connected with church leaders. 00:08:33.42\00:08:36.74 He was assigned to a far region to teach people about Jesus. 00:08:36.77\00:08:40.75 But Philipus felt a burden to reach his own tribe. 00:08:40.78\00:08:44.17 The leaders eventually agreed to let him go back 00:08:44.20\00:08:46.29 to his hometown. 00:08:46.32\00:08:48.19 He came back encouraged to share the message. 00:08:48.22\00:08:52.18 I started by visiting my family's house 00:08:52.21\00:08:55.11 and witness to them through Bible study. 00:08:55.14\00:08:58.32 Eventually they accepted the message. 00:08:58.35\00:09:01.03 Philipus knocked on doors to spread the word. 00:09:01.06\00:09:03.95 Although many were skeptical 00:09:03.98\00:09:05.35 about allowing new religions into their town, 00:09:05.38\00:09:08.27 some people allowed him to teach them 00:09:08.30\00:09:09.98 and accepted the message of hope. 00:09:10.01\00:09:12.57 A small group of believers met each Sabbath for worship. 00:09:12.60\00:09:16.95 We made this area a temporary church, 00:09:16.98\00:09:19.80 this area right here. 00:09:19.83\00:09:22.92 Overtime many more people 00:09:22.95\00:09:25.30 have accepted Jesus into their lives. 00:09:25.33\00:09:28.23 The congregation grew so much that they had to build a church 00:09:28.26\00:09:31.52 where they could worship on Sabbath. 00:09:31.55\00:09:33.95 Today members are active in the community. 00:09:33.98\00:09:37.26 One form of outreach is through the children. 00:09:37.29\00:09:40.08 They sing and pray with people right on their doorsteps. 00:09:40.11\00:09:43.14 The children have so much fun singing to people 00:09:47.37\00:09:50.27 who have never heard these songs before. 00:09:50.30\00:09:53.71 Later that day some other kids visit another site 00:09:53.74\00:09:56.52 where another congregation is quickly growing. 00:09:56.55\00:09:59.94 They gather regularly at a member's home to worship. 00:09:59.97\00:10:03.36 Their group has grown so much 00:10:03.39\00:10:04.83 that they plan to build a new church there soon. 00:10:04.86\00:10:07.81 The group continues their worship at the building site 00:10:07.84\00:10:10.42 and prays that God will bless their congregation. 00:10:10.45\00:10:14.34 They take joy in mixing the concrete 00:10:14.37\00:10:16.86 to begin building their new church. 00:10:16.89\00:10:19.20 God used Philipus to plant a church in Kaimana. 00:10:19.23\00:10:22.83 Although this congregation is growing 00:10:22.86\00:10:24.64 there are many challenges 00:10:24.67\00:10:26.04 while working in this region in the world. 00:10:26.07\00:10:28.95 Please pray for the people of Indonesia. 00:10:28.98\00:10:31.77 Pray that God will touch their hearts 00:10:31.80\00:10:33.32 so that many will come to know Jesus. 00:10:33.35\00:10:36.15 And thank you, for supporting mission. 00:10:36.18\00:10:38.80 Well, thanks so much for joining us 00:10:51.96\00:10:53.69 You may recall at the start of the program 00:10:53.72\00:10:55.58 I mentioned a ministry method 00:10:55.61\00:10:58.05 that actually transcends different cultures. 00:10:58.08\00:11:01.01 Ellen White describes it as Christ method 00:11:01.04\00:11:04.48 and we see this clearly in the gospels 00:11:04.51\00:11:06.21 with the Savior mingled with people. 00:11:06.24\00:11:08.35 He showed His sympathy to them, 00:11:08.38\00:11:10.14 He ministered to their needs, He won their confidence 00:11:10.17\00:11:13.59 and then He bid them to follow Him. 00:11:13.62\00:11:15.87 It's a beautiful method. 00:11:15.90\00:11:17.30 It's a method that's bathed in love and compassion, 00:11:17.33\00:11:20.87 and it's a method that truly works. 00:11:20.90\00:11:23.62 If you live in North America 00:11:23.65\00:11:24.96 we would love to send you 00:11:24.99\00:11:26.02 a small gift of appreciation for your support of mission. 00:11:26.05\00:11:29.93 It's the Mission 360 DVD 00:11:29.96\00:11:32.13 and it's full of mission stories 00:11:32.16\00:11:34.05 like you've seen on today's program. 00:11:34.08\00:11:36.19 Simply call the toll-free number on your screen right now 00:11:36.22\00:11:39.23 and ask for the Mission 360 DVD 00:11:39.26\00:11:42.41 or if you prefer you can go to the Adventist Mission 00:11:42.44\00:11:45.19 website as well and ask for the Mission 360 magazine. 00:11:45.22\00:11:49.31 Well, that's all for today's program, 00:11:49.34\00:11:51.48 thanks so much for joining us 00:11:51.51\00:11:52.73 and I hope you can join us next time 00:11:52.76\00:11:54.50 right here on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:11:54.53\00:11:57.18
