Bangkok, Thailand, sometimes known as the City of Angels. 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.93 It's the commercial and political hub of Thailand. 00:00:03.96\00:00:07.51 And of course many sites and attractions bring tourists 00:00:07.54\00:00:11.42 from all around the world 00:00:11.45\00:00:12.61 from the gleaming stupas of Wat Arun, 00:00:12.64\00:00:15.37 to the grand palace, to markets, 00:00:15.40\00:00:17.81 to huge shopping malls. 00:00:17.84\00:00:19.89 But of course underneath all the tourist glitz 00:00:19.92\00:00:21.85 and glamour is also a seamy 00:00:21.88\00:00:23.85 underbelly of prostitution and poverty. 00:00:23.88\00:00:26.80 There are tremendous needs here in Bangkok. 00:00:26.83\00:00:29.79 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:36.10\00:00:38.58 Jesus gave us a command. He gave us a mission. 00:00:38.61\00:00:44.25 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world 00:00:44.28\00:00:49.09 telling them of His love." 00:00:49.12\00:00:51.62 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:51.65\00:00:55.92 Hello, and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots" 00:01:01.13\00:01:03.34 coming to you today from Bangkok, Thailand. 00:01:03.37\00:01:06.75 Thailand of course is a Buddhist country 00:01:06.78\00:01:08.82 and 95 percent of the people here 00:01:08.85\00:01:11.12 practice what is known as Theravada Buddhism. 00:01:11.15\00:01:14.15 And it's been said that Buddhism 00:01:14.18\00:01:15.29 is not so much religion, it's a way of life. 00:01:15.32\00:01:19.13 It permeates the way people think, the way they act, 00:01:19.16\00:01:21.68 the way they structure their lives, their world view. 00:01:21.71\00:01:25.13 Thailand is a very tolerant nation 00:01:25.16\00:01:27.59 and there are many different religions 00:01:27.62\00:01:29.33 perhaps a million Muslims, 00:01:29.36\00:01:31.24 a quarter of the million Christians, 00:01:31.27\00:01:32.67 there are Sikhs, there are Hindus and others. 00:01:32.70\00:01:35.67 Almost hundred years ago the Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:35.70\00:01:38.12 movement began here in 1919 with two missionaries. 00:01:38.15\00:01:42.68 And the church has grown to some 14,000 members 00:01:42.71\00:01:46.60 but that's 14,000 among some 66 million people. 00:01:46.63\00:01:51.52 And most of those Adventist believers have come 00:01:51.55\00:01:53.77 from minority tribal groups, a tremendous mission challenge. 00:01:53.80\00:01:59.10 And as you think about those numbers, 00:01:59.13\00:02:00.58 let's travel to the country of Russia 00:02:00.61\00:02:03.02 to visit a humble Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:02:03.05\00:02:06.44 The city of Kazan is considered Russia's 3rd capital 00:02:15.00\00:02:18.01 and the only sports capital of the country. 00:02:18.04\00:02:21.24 This multiethnic city is honored by UNESCO 00:02:21.27\00:02:24.21 and famous for Muslims and Christians 00:02:24.24\00:02:26.14 living side-by-side in peace. 00:02:26.17\00:02:29.16 This is a territory where beautiful mosques were erected. 00:02:29.19\00:02:32.68 There are approximately 55 magnificent buildings. 00:02:32.71\00:02:36.75 One of them is the Kul Sharif 00:02:36.78\00:02:38.54 that sits inside of the Kremlin Walls. 00:02:38.57\00:02:41.05 The Tatarstan people here 00:02:41.08\00:02:42.58 are accustomed to such sights of grandeur. 00:02:42.61\00:02:45.11 But as they come into the rented space 00:02:45.14\00:02:46.89 of a Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:02:46.92\00:02:48.73 the people find a very different picture. 00:02:48.76\00:02:51.67 The members of this simple church 00:02:51.70\00:02:53.20 travel from far to reach this location. 00:02:53.23\00:02:56.11 When they come, 00:02:56.14\00:02:57.17 they are welcomed into the warm building 00:02:57.20\00:02:59.23 and gladly worship together. 00:02:59.26\00:03:01.08 Here they sing hymns to praise God 00:03:01.11\00:03:03.41 and spend quality time in groups, 00:03:03.44\00:03:05.42 examining the quarterly Sabbath School lesson. 00:03:05.45\00:03:08.08 They are treated to choir music and they pray with one another. 00:03:08.11\00:03:11.88 The children also have a space for themselves 00:03:11.91\00:03:14.02 to learn the precious life-lessons of the Bible. 00:03:14.05\00:03:16.66 Although just a table in a cluttered room, 00:03:16.69\00:03:19.09 they have a chance to interact and build character here. 00:03:19.12\00:03:23.23 There is room for all ages in this Adventist community. 00:03:23.26\00:03:26.70 Today, Albina is visiting the church again. 00:03:26.73\00:03:29.50 She was invited by her friend Timur. 00:03:29.53\00:03:31.95 Timur believes the Bible has well outlined 00:03:31.98\00:03:34.14 how we should conduct ourselves 00:03:34.17\00:03:35.91 and he isn't afraid to live out his conviction. 00:03:35.94\00:03:39.97 I think that people can see in my life 00:03:40.00\00:03:41.87 the difference from others. 00:03:41.90\00:03:43.58 Most of the people smoke and drink 00:03:43.61\00:03:45.20 and do other bad things. 00:03:45.23\00:03:47.07 So when they see that I don't do such things, 00:03:47.10\00:03:49.45 they begin to ask why I am different 00:03:49.48\00:03:51.28 and ask questions about the church 00:03:51.31\00:03:52.75 that has made a difference in my life. 00:03:52.78\00:03:57.14 Timur's deportment sparked interest in Albina 00:03:57.17\00:03:59.87 who was searching for answers. 00:03:59.90\00:04:01.77 Through his invitation 00:04:01.80\00:04:03.23 she began attending this church. 00:04:03.26\00:04:06.17 I like coming to this church 00:04:06.20\00:04:07.96 because I love to sing and I like to pray as well. 00:04:07.99\00:04:12.18 Plus there are a lot of kind and friendly people here. 00:04:12.21\00:04:17.62 Albina plans to keep coming to church 00:04:17.65\00:04:19.77 and has made known her desire to be baptized. 00:04:19.80\00:04:23.07 As the church invites guests 00:04:23.10\00:04:24.55 and studies the Bible with them, 00:04:24.58\00:04:26.32 they are faced with a challenge. 00:04:26.35\00:04:28.63 As you can see there are many people in this hall. 00:04:28.66\00:04:31.41 Many people are sitting outside. 00:04:31.44\00:04:33.61 When we invite new people to study the Bible, 00:04:33.64\00:04:35.76 we have to give the study right here in this crowded room 00:04:35.79\00:04:38.83 among all these old things. 00:04:38.86\00:04:40.68 That's why we need a new building. 00:04:40.71\00:04:42.54 Of course, we do outreach work outside the church, 00:04:42.57\00:04:45.37 distributing literature and inviting people. 00:04:45.40\00:04:48.27 But we also need to do some work inside the church. 00:04:48.30\00:04:52.26 The leased apartment they are using 00:04:52.29\00:04:53.72 is one of three churches in the city. 00:04:53.75\00:04:55.93 Because two of the churches are rented, 00:04:55.96\00:04:57.64 there is no guarantee 00:04:57.67\00:04:58.92 that they can continue using this space indefinitely. 00:04:58.95\00:05:02.10 In answer to these challenges, 00:05:02.13\00:05:03.57 the pastors have acquired land in a prime location 00:05:03.60\00:05:06.47 to hold services near the center of town 00:05:06.50\00:05:08.63 and close to public transport. 00:05:08.66\00:05:12.09 We chose this place because there is a metro, 00:05:12.12\00:05:14.79 also there is a bus stop and train station. 00:05:14.82\00:05:18.26 We are planning to build a church here 00:05:18.29\00:05:20.13 and to hold different evangelistic programs 00:05:20.16\00:05:22.45 and social programs to this new community. 00:05:22.48\00:05:26.95 Now the members are praying 00:05:26.98\00:05:28.12 for the funds to start building. 00:05:28.15\00:05:30.02 The leaders here have big plans for the new church. 00:05:30.05\00:05:33.38 This will also be a center of influence with many initiatives 00:05:33.41\00:05:36.96 to connect with the community. 00:05:36.99\00:05:38.99 Please pray that God will both establish this church 00:05:39.02\00:05:41.93 physically and spiritually. 00:05:41.96\00:05:44.40 This quarter's 13th Sabbath Offering 00:05:46.07\00:05:47.80 will help fund a new church for Kazan, 00:05:47.83\00:05:50.92 as well as many other projects 00:05:50.95\00:05:52.26 that we'll learn about later in the program. 00:05:52.29\00:05:54.10 The next step. 00:05:54.13\00:05:55.17 The amazing story of Pastor Monteiro jailed in Togo. 00:05:55.20\00:06:00.11 Rick Kajiura has that story. 00:06:00.14\00:06:02.17 Rick? Thank you, Gary. 00:06:02.20\00:06:05.40 Our guest today is Pastor Anthony Monteiro 00:06:05.43\00:06:08.84 who's been serving in the West Central Africa division 00:06:08.87\00:06:11.24 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:06:11.27\00:06:13.72 Seventh-day Adventists around the world 00:06:13.75\00:06:15.12 had been praying for him 00:06:15.15\00:06:16.36 because Pastor Monteiro spend nearly two years in prison. 00:06:16.39\00:06:21.44 He was falsely accused of a crime 00:06:21.47\00:06:23.35 that he didn't commit, 00:06:23.38\00:06:24.42 but they still put him in jail, there was no trial. 00:06:24.45\00:06:27.74 And so Seventh-day Adventists around the world prayed for him 00:06:27.77\00:06:29.87 and recently he was released and he's talking with us today. 00:06:29.90\00:06:33.43 Pastor Monteiro, it's very good to have you here. 00:06:33.46\00:06:37.59 Many people don't know your story. 00:06:37.62\00:06:39.83 Can you briefly tell us how did you end up in prison? 00:06:39.86\00:06:43.96 One day I received in my office a man 00:06:49.44\00:06:51.77 who wanted to talk to me. 00:06:51.80\00:06:54.15 He came in just to speak with me. 00:06:54.18\00:06:57.21 When he entered my office he said he needed money 00:06:57.24\00:06:59.26 since he did not work. 00:06:59.29\00:07:01.75 He also said he needed food. 00:07:01.78\00:07:04.75 I asked him if he was a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:07:04.78\00:07:06.74 He said, "Yes I'm a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:07:06.77\00:07:08.82 I go to church." 00:07:08.85\00:07:11.07 So I presented him to the elders 00:07:11.10\00:07:12.70 for them to take care of this man. 00:07:12.73\00:07:15.64 It was only three months later that I found out 00:07:15.67\00:07:17.57 the elders of the church did not help him. 00:07:17.60\00:07:20.75 They already knew this man and his history 00:07:20.78\00:07:22.42 and decided not to give him any money. 00:07:22.45\00:07:25.72 He later visited my office a couple more times 00:07:25.75\00:07:28.26 and told me about Bruno Omar 00:07:28.29\00:07:30.11 a man that could help him to purchase a car. 00:07:30.14\00:07:33.56 So I spoke with Bruno Omar on the phone 00:07:33.59\00:07:35.65 on behalf of this man, and Bruno told me 00:07:35.68\00:07:37.81 that if he's able to help out he will do it. 00:07:37.84\00:07:42.44 So the man left my office and called couple of days later 00:07:42.47\00:07:45.13 to enquire about Bruno Omar 00:07:45.16\00:07:46.88 and the help he hope to receive from him. 00:07:46.91\00:07:50.47 So I told him that Bruno had not called yet, 00:07:50.50\00:07:53.24 so the man hang up 00:07:53.27\00:07:54.38 and I did not see him again until the 13th of May. 00:07:54.41\00:07:58.74 He came one more time to speak with me, 00:07:58.77\00:08:00.47 but I was extremely busy and could not see him. 00:08:00.50\00:08:04.76 Then on the 15th of May 00:08:04.79\00:08:05.99 the police came to me and detained me. 00:08:06.02\00:08:09.00 As I entered the police station I saw this man in cuffs. 00:08:09.03\00:08:12.86 They asked me if I knew this man 00:08:12.89\00:08:14.17 and I answered yes, I know this man. 00:08:14.20\00:08:19.05 Then the police officers informed me 00:08:19.08\00:08:20.87 of the accusation the man made. 00:08:20.90\00:08:23.99 The man said that I ordered him to bring fresh blood 00:08:24.02\00:08:26.86 for some secret sacrificial rituals 00:08:26.89\00:08:28.91 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:08:28.94\00:08:31.81 I answered that I had never ordered such a thing 00:08:31.84\00:08:34.89 and that he couldn't even have approached me 00:08:34.93\00:08:36.53 about something like this. 00:08:36.56\00:08:39.10 This was definitely something stage 00:08:39.13\00:08:40.93 then that someone used this man to incriminate me 00:08:40.96\00:08:43.61 and to accuse Bruno Omar as well. 00:08:43.64\00:08:46.90 That's what we believe. 00:08:46.93\00:08:49.82 Nothing could be proved then, 00:08:49.85\00:08:52.43 and we were in prison without evidence 00:08:52.46\00:08:54.35 and without proper explanation, 00:08:54.38\00:08:57.24 that's the summary of what forced me into prison. 00:08:57.27\00:08:59.99 So from that time you are in prison, 00:09:06.16\00:09:08.95 you were not released until nearly two years later. 00:09:08.98\00:09:12.62 When you first went there, did you? 00:09:12.65\00:09:14.67 How did you feel about your situation? 00:09:14.70\00:09:17.77 Did you have any idea 00:09:17.80\00:09:18.84 that would be as long as it was? 00:09:18.87\00:09:21.07 When I was taken to prison on March 28th 2012, 00:09:24.11\00:09:28.07 when I entered prison I saw that 00:09:28.10\00:09:29.52 this was a totally different world. 00:09:29.55\00:09:32.48 They were 2,000 people inside. 00:09:32.51\00:09:35.25 The situation was chaotic to say the least. 00:09:35.28\00:09:38.97 The place was degraded, a terrifying place, 00:09:39.00\00:09:42.30 but what I could I do, I was sentenced to be here. 00:09:42.33\00:09:45.52 So I spend the first night in the room 00:09:45.55\00:09:47.07 with 82 other people. 00:09:47.10\00:09:49.63 It was a very difficult situation, 00:09:49.66\00:09:51.30 I did not sleep. 00:09:51.33\00:09:53.26 The next day they send me to a room with 27 other people. 00:09:53.29\00:09:56.56 I had a bit more room then. 00:09:56.59\00:09:58.75 But there were a lot of people everywhere 00:09:58.78\00:10:00.41 and I spend this long period in jail. 00:10:00.44\00:10:03.06 Actually I never expected to stay there for so long. 00:10:03.09\00:10:06.00 Initially I thought it was only going to be a couple of days. 00:10:06.03\00:10:09.58 The lawyer also encouraged me 00:10:09.61\00:10:11.04 that it wasn't going to be long and they would release me. 00:10:11.07\00:10:14.21 Also I couldn't believe they would put me 00:10:14.24\00:10:16.41 as an innocent person in prison. 00:10:16.44\00:10:18.96 I thought it would take a couple of days 00:10:18.99\00:10:20.42 for them to sort out the facts, acquire more evidence, 00:10:20.45\00:10:22.75 talk to other witnesses and resolve this. 00:10:22.78\00:10:25.50 But as it ends up, I was there 22 long months. 00:10:25.53\00:10:30.21 Now at what point did other prisoners learn 00:10:35.16\00:10:38.04 that you were a pastor? 00:10:38.07\00:10:40.06 When I arrived in prison, even the first night 00:10:47.11\00:10:49.57 the whole prison already knew 00:10:49.60\00:10:51.01 that a Seventh-day Adventist pastor had arrived there. 00:10:51.04\00:10:55.45 I spend the night with 82 people 00:10:55.48\00:10:57.23 and the next night everyone in the prison cell knew 00:10:57.26\00:10:59.36 that I was a pastor. 00:10:59.39\00:11:02.86 So two days later they came to speak to me 00:11:02.89\00:11:04.92 and asked me if I would preach in our prison cell on Tuesdays. 00:11:04.95\00:11:09.26 So I tested them by saying, no, I came here as criminal, 00:11:09.29\00:11:12.36 how can you ask me to preach. 00:11:12.39\00:11:15.49 To that they replied you have to preach to us. 00:11:15.52\00:11:18.83 We know you now. 00:11:18.86\00:11:19.95 We have seen you and you are a man of God, 00:11:19.98\00:11:23.42 so please we want you to preach here on Tuesdays. 00:11:23.45\00:11:28.57 In this manner they recognized 00:11:28.60\00:11:30.01 my vocation from the first days, 00:11:30.04\00:11:33.44 and everyone respected me and protected me there 00:11:33.47\00:11:35.73 because they knew I was a pastor. 00:11:35.76\00:11:38.82 And God helped me to live there 00:11:38.85\00:11:40.70 and to help some of them without any problems. 00:11:40.73\00:11:48.30 I'm curious, 00:11:48.33\00:11:49.36 what was your first sermon about in that prison? 00:11:49.39\00:11:52.55 To speak to prisoners it's something difficult, 00:11:57.30\00:11:59.69 because they are very sensitive people. 00:11:59.72\00:12:03.01 One needs to carefully select 00:12:03.04\00:12:04.37 and consider the topics for a sermon. 00:12:04.40\00:12:07.45 You don't want to hurt the delicate feelings of anyone. 00:12:07.48\00:12:12.18 My first sermon came from Isaiah 60:1-3. 00:12:12.21\00:12:16.76 It talks about this Christ 00:12:16.79\00:12:18.18 that came to set the captives free 00:12:18.21\00:12:21.46 and set prisoners at liberty. 00:12:21.49\00:12:24.28 It was along the lines that I directed my talk 00:12:24.31\00:12:26.27 with those prisoners. 00:12:26.30\00:12:28.90 Christ came to free us 00:12:28.93\00:12:30.10 and we should feel at liberty spiritually speaking. 00:12:30.13\00:12:33.95 The physical liberty would come later as time pass by. 00:12:33.98\00:12:38.46 But this was the topic of my first sermon. 00:12:38.49\00:12:43.50 Past Monteiro, thank you very much for being with us. 00:12:43.53\00:12:47.02 And for you viewers at home, 00:12:47.05\00:12:49.23 Pastor Monteiro has been through a difficult time 00:12:49.26\00:12:51.81 but thanks to your prayers, he is now with us today. 00:12:51.84\00:12:56.57 But there are others, people who are with him, 00:12:56.60\00:12:59.44 the people around the world 00:12:59.47\00:13:00.70 who are in prison are suffering for their faith. 00:13:00.73\00:13:03.57 Please pray for those 00:13:03.60\00:13:05.08 who go through hardships for what they believe in. 00:13:05.11\00:13:08.69 Thanks Rick, that was just part one of Pastor Monterio's story. 00:13:08.72\00:13:12.45 Stay tune to future programs to hear 00:13:12.48\00:13:15.14 and learn more about Pastor Monterio. 00:13:15.17\00:13:17.84 We gonna take a short break. Then we will be right back. 00:13:17.87\00:13:20.69
