Welcome back to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.84 My guest is Dr. Benjamin Baker, 00:00:02.87\00:00:05.42 and Dr. Baker works at the office of 00:00:05.45\00:00:07.88 Archives, Statistics and Research 00:00:07.91\00:00:10.54 at the Seventh-day Adventist World Headquarters 00:00:10.57\00:00:12.94 here in Silver Spring, Maryland. 00:00:12.97\00:00:14.96 Dr. Baker, thanks so much for joining us. 00:00:14.99\00:00:16.67 Thank you for having me. 00:00:16.70\00:00:17.73 You know, you do a lot of research, 00:00:17.76\00:00:19.68 you are historian but what I love 00:00:19.71\00:00:21.93 is the mission stories that you uncover from the past. 00:00:21.96\00:00:24.65 And you have a terrific story 00:00:24.68\00:00:26.48 to share with our viewers today. 00:00:26.51\00:00:28.33 So why don't you go ahead and share them. 00:00:28.36\00:00:30.16 Thank you, Gary. 00:00:30.19\00:00:31.22 I'm highlighting two woman 00:00:31.25\00:00:32.41 of extraordinary faith and courage. 00:00:32.44\00:00:34.91 Born in 1866, in California, Georgia Ann Burrus 00:00:34.94\00:00:38.91 became a Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:38.94\00:00:40.26 against the will of her parents at age 16. 00:00:40.29\00:00:43.67 She attended today's Pacific Union College 00:00:43.70\00:00:46.25 and shortly after graduating 00:00:46.28\00:00:48.84 volunteered for mission service in India. 00:00:48.87\00:00:51.62 At 29 years old she sailed to the Asian subcontinent 00:00:51.65\00:00:55.10 in January of 1895 and when she set foot 00:00:55.13\00:00:58.72 on the bustling dock in Calcutta, 00:00:58.75\00:01:01.19 became Adventism's first full-time missionary in India. 00:01:01.22\00:01:05.37 Little did she know that she would soon meet 00:01:05.40\00:01:07.39 another single woman who was to be the first of her kind? 00:01:07.42\00:01:11.48 Georgia's first task was to learn Bengali. 00:01:11.51\00:01:15.02 As she grasped the basics of the language 00:01:15.05\00:01:17.33 and immersed herself in the culture, 00:01:17.36\00:01:19.91 she decides to open a school for Hindu girls 00:01:19.94\00:01:22.98 which she did the next year in 1896. 00:01:23.01\00:01:26.30 Upon their request Georgia also began 00:01:26.33\00:01:28.79 visiting her student's families at their homes 00:01:28.82\00:01:32.09 to teach them English from the Bible. 00:01:32.12\00:01:34.81 One day she visited the home of a family called Biswas. 00:01:34.84\00:01:39.54 In those days the houses in India 00:01:39.57\00:01:41.40 were more like compounds, 00:01:41.43\00:01:43.35 extended families living together, 00:01:43.38\00:01:45.43 with the men and women in separate quarters. 00:01:45.46\00:01:48.94 In the zenana or women's quarter, 00:01:48.97\00:01:51.83 Georgia met a beautiful bright-eyed girl 00:01:51.86\00:01:54.28 of 11 named Nanibala. 00:01:54.31\00:01:57.73 Burrus learned that the young girl 00:01:57.76\00:01:59.15 was already a widow, 00:01:59.18\00:02:00.89 her husband having died years earlier. 00:02:00.92\00:02:03.54 An immediate bond developed between the two. 00:02:03.57\00:02:07.14 The missionary continued to visit the Biswas zenana, 00:02:07.17\00:02:10.67 teaching the women English from the Bible once a week. 00:02:10.70\00:02:14.35 At first imperceptible, as the visits continued 00:02:14.38\00:02:18.33 Burrus could see that the Word of God 00:02:18.36\00:02:20.04 was taking root in Nanibala's heart. 00:02:20.07\00:02:23.54 When the other women had lost interest 00:02:23.57\00:02:25.18 in her Bible teachings only Nanibala was left. 00:02:25.21\00:02:29.50 Nanibala expressed to Georgia 00:02:29.53\00:02:30.92 that she wanted to become a Christian 00:02:30.95\00:02:33.28 but was scared of her family's reaction 00:02:33.31\00:02:36.43 which she knew would be hostile. 00:02:36.46\00:02:38.67 Sure enough when her father found out 00:02:38.70\00:02:41.10 that Nanibala wanted to convert to Christianity, 00:02:41.13\00:02:43.77 he forbade his daughter from studying with Georgia 00:02:43.80\00:02:46.82 but Georgia and Nanibala continued in secret. 00:02:46.85\00:02:51.72 When her father found out he beat her so severely, 00:02:51.75\00:02:55.45 that night she ran away to Georgia's Mission House. 00:02:55.48\00:03:00.54 To make a long story short Nanibala returned home 00:03:00.57\00:03:04.80 when her father promised the missionaries 00:03:04.83\00:03:07.48 to be tolerant and allow his daughter 00:03:07.51\00:03:09.74 to practice her new faith. 00:03:09.77\00:03:12.08 But when Nanibala returned home 00:03:12.11\00:03:14.57 her father grabbed her and locked her 00:03:14.60\00:03:16.87 in a room in the house, swearing he'd murder her 00:03:16.90\00:03:21.02 if she tried to escape and murder anyone 00:03:21.05\00:03:23.71 who attempted to free her. 00:03:23.74\00:03:26.05 Nanibala at first sobbing to herself, 00:03:26.08\00:03:29.28 soon dried her tears and pleaded with God 00:03:29.31\00:03:32.24 not just for escape but for the opportunity 00:03:32.27\00:03:35.73 to serve her new-found Savior. 00:03:35.76\00:03:38.34 It was on Sabbath, a day whose sanctity 00:03:38.37\00:03:41.46 she had just recently learned of that her prayers were answered. 00:03:41.49\00:03:45.75 In those days homes in India were built on all four sides 00:03:45.78\00:03:49.36 of an open court forming a complete enclosure. 00:03:49.39\00:03:53.99 All throughout the week workmen had been 00:03:54.02\00:03:56.01 making repairs on the Biswas' house. 00:03:56.04\00:04:00.16 At quitting time on Friday evening 00:04:00.19\00:04:02.56 they had left a ladder 00:04:02.59\00:04:03.81 lying in the open court of the enclosure. 00:04:03.84\00:04:07.09 On Saturday when she arose from her prayers 00:04:07.12\00:04:09.51 Nanibala looked out from her window 00:04:09.54\00:04:11.50 and spotted the ladder. 00:04:11.53\00:04:13.52 She immediately knew that God had answered her prayer. 00:04:13.55\00:04:17.05 At midnight when everyone was sleeping 00:04:17.08\00:04:20.43 Nanibala made her get away. 00:04:20.46\00:04:23.38 With the assistance of sympathetic aunt 00:04:23.41\00:04:25.85 she escaped her room and hoisted the heavy ladder 00:04:25.88\00:04:29.29 against the side of the house, 00:04:29.32\00:04:31.70 nimbly climbing it she poured herself onto the roof, 00:04:31.73\00:04:36.11 scurried across it, then leapt down to the street below. 00:04:36.14\00:04:41.86 By a couple of other miracles the courageous Nanibala 00:04:41.89\00:04:45.87 ended up in front of Georgia Burris that night. 00:04:45.90\00:04:49.89 She had to fight family, upbringing culture, 00:04:49.92\00:04:53.87 cast and religion for Jesus. 00:04:53.90\00:04:58.47 In the coming weeks numberless efforts were made 00:04:58.50\00:05:02.19 by the Biswas family to wrench their little girl 00:05:02.22\00:05:05.55 away from the Adventist mission. 00:05:05.58\00:05:08.04 Her mother and grandmother came 00:05:08.07\00:05:10.09 and with tears begged her to return. 00:05:10.12\00:05:14.45 A rich woman from another Christian denomination 00:05:14.48\00:05:17.73 hired by the Biswas tried to enticed Nanibala 00:05:17.76\00:05:21.68 with deceit and cunning words and promises 00:05:21.71\00:05:24.31 of unimaginable comforts to come back to her home. 00:05:24.34\00:05:27.70 Her father even station men at the mission gates 00:05:27.73\00:05:30.73 to grab his daughter when she walked by, but all to no avail. 00:05:30.76\00:05:37.31 The 11-year-old widow was baptized in 1895, 00:05:37.34\00:05:42.70 the first Hindu to convert to Seventh-day Adventism 00:05:42.73\00:05:48.25 You know it's just incomprehensible, 00:05:48.28\00:05:50.43 an 11-year-old widow, different world. 00:05:50.46\00:05:55.43 Different world, different time. 00:05:55.46\00:05:57.75 What courage for someone so young 00:05:57.78\00:06:02.16 and you know what I was interested in 00:06:02.19\00:06:04.77 as you were telling that story, 00:06:04.80\00:06:05.92 how do you discover this story, 00:06:05.95\00:06:07.28 I know this is a hundred years ago? 00:06:07.31\00:06:09.41 I mean you know the story but how do you do it? 00:06:09.44\00:06:11.32 I work in the Archives. Okay. 00:06:11.35\00:06:12.96 And I'm constantly you know, looking in the old boxes 00:06:12.99\00:06:17.20 and reading the old magazines and the periodicals 00:06:17.23\00:06:20.53 and I come across these stories and they inspire me so much. 00:06:20.56\00:06:25.41 That I say they'll probably inspire others 00:06:25.44\00:06:27.59 if I write them and tell them and so that's what happens. 00:06:27.62\00:06:31.47 Well, thanks so much for sharing with us today, 00:06:31.50\00:06:33.51 Dr. Baker, I appreciate it very much. 00:06:33.54\00:06:36.38 The office of Archives, Statistics and Research 00:06:36.41\00:06:38.88 where Dr. Baker works, you can actually 00:06:38.91\00:06:42.17 go to their website at adventiststatistics.org. 00:06:42.20\00:06:45.67 That's adventiststatistics.org. 00:06:45.70\00:06:47.93 And adventistarchives.org. And adventistarchives.org. 00:06:47.96\00:06:51.18 Is it the same website just a different? 00:06:51.21\00:06:53.55 Statistics is a different website 00:06:53.58\00:06:55.00 but they're all in the same. 00:06:55.03\00:06:56.33 Together, okay. Thank you very much. 00:06:56.36\00:06:58.31 Next up, we'll travel from India to the country of Myanmar. 00:06:58.34\00:07:03.73 The country of Myanmar is located 00:07:03.76\00:07:06.00 between the countries of China, India, Bangladesh, 00:07:06.03\00:07:09.44 Thailand and Laos. 00:07:09.47\00:07:11.62 Its coastline lies on the Bay of Bengal 00:07:11.65\00:07:14.34 and the Andaman Sea. 00:07:14.37\00:07:16.46 Home to more than 59 million people, 00:07:16.49\00:07:19.53 it is one of the poorer nations in this division 00:07:19.56\00:07:22.80 and it's seen political and economic strife 00:07:22.83\00:07:24.92 since its creation in 1948. 00:07:24.95\00:07:28.22 The capital city Yangon is a bustling mixture of cars, 00:07:28.25\00:07:32.37 motorbikes and pedestrians. 00:07:32.40\00:07:34.93 The majority of the people who live in Myanmar 00:07:34.96\00:07:37.13 are Buddhists and Yangon is home to the giant pagoda temple. 00:07:37.16\00:07:41.83 Every day people come here to pray 00:07:47.02\00:07:49.63 and offer up incense to Buddha. 00:07:49.66\00:07:52.26 The golden temple is an impressive landmark 00:07:52.29\00:07:55.05 on the Yangon's skyline. 00:07:55.08\00:07:58.00 On the outskirts of town is the Yangon Adventist seminary. 00:07:58.03\00:08:02.57 Currently the school is housed in a series of small buildings 00:08:02.60\00:08:06.31 and the classrooms are tightly packed 00:08:06.34\00:08:08.84 and full of children eager to learn. 00:08:08.87\00:08:11.77 They study math, language arts including English, 00:08:11.80\00:08:15.47 science and of course, they learn about Jesus. 00:08:15.50\00:08:19.52 They also love to play. 00:08:19.55\00:08:21.60 The Yangon Adventist seminary 00:08:25.32\00:08:27.32 has outgrown its current physical plans. 00:08:27.35\00:08:30.22 The school has more than 450 students 00:08:30.25\00:08:33.63 and there's a long waiting list of families 00:08:33.66\00:08:36.28 eager to have their children attend the school. 00:08:36.31\00:08:39.54 People send their children here for three reasons. 00:08:43.62\00:08:46.56 The first is that they like the Christian values 00:08:46.59\00:08:48.84 that we teach because they feel 00:08:48.87\00:08:50.51 that this will help their children 00:08:50.54\00:08:51.70 grow up to be better citizens. 00:08:51.73\00:08:54.15 The second is that we teach English, 00:08:54.18\00:08:56.48 something that the government schools do not offer. 00:08:56.51\00:08:59.54 We also have relationships with other schools 00:08:59.57\00:09:01.65 outside Myanmar, where the children 00:09:01.68\00:09:03.78 can continue their studies after graduating from here. 00:09:03.81\00:09:07.64 The majority of the students here come from 00:09:07.67\00:09:09.82 non-Adventist homes, so the school plays a major role 00:09:09.85\00:09:13.68 in reaching into the community. 00:09:13.71\00:09:15.85 Every morning, the children meet for worship 00:09:15.88\00:09:18.90 where they sing songs that tell of Jesus' love. 00:09:18.93\00:09:21.95 This school serves as a wonderful example 00:09:38.12\00:09:40.73 of how education can be a ridge to communities 00:09:40.76\00:09:43.72 that are sometimes hard to reach. 00:09:43.75\00:09:46.49 Please pray for the people in Myanmar 00:09:46.52\00:09:48.91 and pray for the Yangon Adventist School 00:09:48.94\00:09:51.37 as it continues its role of teaching 00:09:51.40\00:09:53.60 young people through Christian education. 00:09:53.63\00:09:58.33 Well, I hope you have enjoyed our snapshots 00:09:58.36\00:10:00.42 of mission from around
