Welcome back to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:01.10\00:00:02.91 I'm talking with Earley Simon, 00:00:02.94\00:00:04.63 who is the producer of this program. 00:00:04.66\00:00:06.43 Welcome, Earley. 00:00:06.46\00:00:08.09 We're talking about Euro-Asia, but I also want to talk about 00:00:08.12\00:00:12.64 a mission initiative called One Year in Mission, 00:00:12.67\00:00:15.11 tell me about that. 00:00:15.14\00:00:16.43 One Year Mission is part of the focus of the church 00:00:16.46\00:00:19.89 into entering the cities 00:00:19.92\00:00:20.97 and reaching people in the cities. 00:00:21.00\00:00:23.66 This is the program 00:00:23.69\00:00:24.97 where 13 people have been selected 00:00:25.00\00:00:26.77 from all over the world. 00:00:26.80\00:00:28.11 They come from each division, each region of the world 00:00:28.14\00:00:30.70 and they met in New York for six months, it's one year 00:00:30.73\00:00:34.15 because they will spend six months in New York, 00:00:34.18\00:00:35.99 they will take what they've learned there 00:00:36.02\00:00:37.61 and bring that back home and teach all their leaders, 00:00:37.64\00:00:40.48 so that they can keep passing to knowledge on. 00:00:40.51\00:00:42.67 Right and so-- so these while these are 14 including 00:00:42.70\00:00:46.37 representatives from the Middle East. 00:00:46.40\00:00:47.76 These 14 people came to New York, 00:00:47.79\00:00:50.58 and the ideas is this-- this one now multiplies are they 00:00:50.61\00:00:53.11 young people give a year of their life. 00:00:53.14\00:00:54.74 That's right. 00:00:54.77\00:00:55.80 And as I was visited Euro-Asia I met Anna. 00:00:55.83\00:00:58.88 Anna was one of the people 00:00:58.91\00:00:59.98 who were selected for the One Year in Mission. 00:01:00.01\00:01:01.93 Sort of very interesting story, 00:01:01.96\00:01:02.99 she went to a very good school in Russia. 00:01:03.02\00:01:06.43 It was a state school and she knew that 00:01:06.46\00:01:08.08 God had led her there for the studies 00:01:08.11\00:01:10.51 and she is now-- was graduating, 00:01:10.54\00:01:12.14 she was ready to go out. 00:01:12.17\00:01:13.55 And she was excited to put her knowledge to work 00:01:13.58\00:01:15.43 and so she applied everywhere. 00:01:15.46\00:01:16.71 Sent resumes all over the place 00:01:16.74\00:01:18.74 and she expected to get a job quickly 00:01:18.77\00:01:20.54 but that wasn't the case. 00:01:20.57\00:01:22.26 She tried and tried and even though 00:01:22.29\00:01:23.66 she had the qualifications the studies were there 00:01:23.69\00:01:26.46 she couldn't get a job and she didn't understand why. 00:01:26.49\00:01:29.04 So she began to pray, she knelt down and said, Lord, 00:01:29.07\00:01:31.62 please help me to find a job you know. 00:01:31.65\00:01:33.70 I know, You've led me up to here, 00:01:33.73\00:01:35.03 I know You've let me to school and my diplomas here 00:01:35.06\00:01:37.93 and what do I do with this now? 00:01:37.96\00:01:39.90 And as she prayed she encountered 00:01:39.93\00:01:41.92 the youth director for her conference. 00:01:41.95\00:01:44.56 And they started talking and sharing ideas, 00:01:44.59\00:01:46.95 she shared her experience she was looking for job. 00:01:46.98\00:01:49.28 And he remember that One Year in Mission Project, 00:01:49.31\00:01:51.38 so he mention that to her and said, 00:01:51.41\00:01:53.16 you should apply you know. 00:01:53.19\00:01:54.77 There is probably lot of people applying, 00:01:54.80\00:01:56.27 there is only one person that will go 00:01:56.30\00:01:57.55 and represent our division but you should apply. 00:01:57.58\00:02:00.38 And she did, she didn't expect much of it. 00:02:00.41\00:02:03.01 And I don't know how much later she got a call from him, 00:02:03.04\00:02:05.27 saying you know, you've been 00:02:05.30\00:02:06.33 the one selected to go represent us. 00:02:06.36\00:02:08.85 So she was super excited. 00:02:08.88\00:02:10.97 And she went to New York spent six months there. 00:02:11.00\00:02:13.74 And what they did is, when they got there 00:02:13.77\00:02:16.50 they received a lot of training in medical missionary work, 00:02:16.53\00:02:21.13 evangelism you know, door to door approach 00:02:21.16\00:02:24.04 and how to give Bible studies and pray with people 00:02:24.07\00:02:26.06 and communication skills and bunch of other things. 00:02:26.09\00:02:29.72 And they didn't only get lectures but they actually, 00:02:29.75\00:02:32.77 were encouraged to put that into practice. 00:02:32.80\00:02:34.62 So the 14 people got together and said, what do we do now 00:02:34.65\00:02:38.09 to connect with the community? 00:02:38.12\00:02:40.12 And what they did was they would go door to door 00:02:40.15\00:02:42.73 in their neighborhood and ask people 00:02:42.76\00:02:44.86 if they had any needs-- 00:02:44.89\00:02:46.12 if no, if they wanted to be prayed for. 00:02:46.15\00:02:49.32 And they would even stop you from street giving hugs 00:02:49.35\00:02:51.70 if they wanted to and pray with them. 00:02:51.73\00:02:53.69 They just started really interacting with the community 00:02:53.72\00:02:55.58 you know, trying to spend time with them and befriend them. 00:02:55.61\00:02:58.73 And when they did that, they got names, contacts, 00:02:58.76\00:03:01.91 they started doing the cooking classes, 00:03:01.94\00:03:03.89 stop smoking programs and-- and a few other things 00:03:03.92\00:03:06.69 just to help the community you know. 00:03:06.72\00:03:09.12 And all those ideas that they've got there 00:03:09.15\00:03:11.22 and some others they were able bring back to their region 00:03:11.25\00:03:15.01 and Anna was super excited 00:03:15.04\00:03:16.10 because she learned a bunch of things 00:03:16.13\00:03:17.54 and now she was trying in her area. 00:03:17.57\00:03:19.90 And some of these things were-- 00:03:19.93\00:03:22.34 these are people would think of them 00:03:22.37\00:03:23.48 is not this won't work here. 00:03:23.51\00:03:25.36 But they tired it anyway and it's amazing 00:03:25.39\00:03:28.48 those things are working and not only working 00:03:28.51\00:03:30.84 and bringing more people to the church 00:03:30.87\00:03:32.80 but as they trained others in their region 00:03:32.83\00:03:35.54 they also try new ideas and passing this knowledge on. 00:03:35.57\00:03:39.53 This work like a springboard 00:03:39.56\00:03:41.13 you know to whole bunch of leaders 00:03:41.16\00:03:43.42 they come out of one program in New York City. 00:03:43.45\00:03:45.59 Fantastic, now how long will she be working 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.95 as a volunteer back on them? 00:03:48.98\00:03:51.88 The project was six months in New York, 00:03:51.91\00:03:54.00 six months in her region 00:03:54.03\00:03:55.63 but this is volunteer work so she can continue on 00:03:55.66\00:03:58.37 and that's what she wants to do. 00:03:58.40\00:04:00.08 Now I had a couple of days up in New York 00:04:00.11\00:04:02.20 with these young people and tremendous young people, 00:04:02.23\00:04:05.89 variety of backgrounds and we spend a couple of days 00:04:05.92\00:04:09.03 talking about Christ's method of the ministry 00:04:09.06\00:04:11.11 and I think the holistic method of ministry 00:04:11.14\00:04:15.74 is really the only way 00:04:15.77\00:04:17.82 that we're going to have any success 00:04:17.85\00:04:19.29 whatsoever in the cities. 00:04:19.32\00:04:22.27 That's what the thing that I think they took away as well 00:04:22.30\00:04:24.37 is that personal touch in relating to people. 00:04:24.40\00:04:28.41 We often hear the verse 00:04:28.44\00:04:29.69 "Go ye--go you into all the world." 00:04:29.72\00:04:33.21 Sometimes you think oh, I just send a book, 00:04:33.24\00:04:34.59 I'll just send the donation or I'll send a TV program, 00:04:34.62\00:04:36.96 but that's one thing that I felt from Anna. 00:04:36.99\00:04:38.96 She really got that she needs to be involved, 00:04:38.99\00:04:40.99 she needs to be the one to go to spend time with people 00:04:41.02\00:04:44.06 to meet their needs and to befriend them 00:04:44.09\00:04:46.82 and only then you can safely ask someone to follow Jesus 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.52 after they know you that you trust, 00:04:49.55\00:04:50.64 you have won their confidence. 00:04:50.67\00:04:53.34 Now when you're visiting in the Euro-Asia region, 00:04:53.37\00:04:58.60 you know, when the full of communism came 00:04:58.63\00:05:02.01 it seem like people very open to hearing the Christian message 00:05:02.04\00:05:05.92 and the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:05:05.95\00:05:08.13 had many baptism et cetera, 00:05:08.16\00:05:09.74 today it seems secularism, 00:05:09.77\00:05:13.05 materialism it's pretty dominant. 00:05:13.08\00:05:15.25 How did you find things? You put it very well. 00:05:15.28\00:05:20.75 The church is working hard to reach the people in the city. 00:05:20.78\00:05:24.08 One thing that struck me, quite a bit was 00:05:24.11\00:05:27.37 when I arrived there you see these beautiful 00:05:27.40\00:05:29.26 church buildings, cathedrals 00:05:29.29\00:05:30.64 and you know mosques and like and the Adventist Church 00:05:30.67\00:05:34.70 doesn't have a lot of those big buildings. 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.00 So it really comes down to the level 00:05:37.03\00:05:38.40 where you have to befriend people and interact with them, 00:05:38.43\00:05:41.41 they are not gonna come to the Adventist Church 00:05:41.44\00:05:42.85 because of what we have to present 00:05:42.88\00:05:45.13 these infrastructure and buildings. 00:05:45.16\00:05:46.67 Right. But the church is growing. 00:05:46.70\00:05:49.53 I met a couple of mafia people or former mafia guys. 00:05:49.56\00:05:54.16 Good they are former. 00:05:54.19\00:05:55.29 And these are not typical guys like my size, 00:05:55.32\00:05:57.61 these are the big guys with scars 00:05:57.64\00:05:59.06 and you can see that they really had a tough life. 00:05:59.09\00:06:03.16 But the church is reaching to those individuals 00:06:03.19\00:06:04.93 as well as other individuals in many different ways. 00:06:04.96\00:06:08.28 But put some of the bad thing 00:06:08.31\00:06:09.48 that we don't have too many of the big structures 00:06:09.51\00:06:11.70 because it takes spec to the New Testament model 00:06:11.73\00:06:14.31 where the church grew meeting people's homes it wasn't 00:06:14.34\00:06:19.11 because that will come into some magnificent cathedral. 00:06:19.14\00:06:21.90 Right, right. 00:06:21.93\00:06:23.52 Well, Earley, thank you so much for joining us today 00:06:23.55\00:06:25.60 and telling us that story. 00:06:25.63\00:06:26.76 My pleasure. 00:06:26.79\00:06:27.82 And viewers at home, 00:06:27.85\00:06:28.92 please pray for the young people 00:06:28.95\00:06:30.63 involved in the One Year in Mission Program, 00:06:30.66\00:06:34.36 going to New York City they had the opportunity 00:06:34.39\00:06:36.86 to hear a lot of things, to pray a lot, 00:06:36.89\00:06:39.54 to actually be involved in various models of ministry. 00:06:39.57\00:06:42.88 And now they back home 00:06:42.91\00:06:43.94 putting Christ method into practice 00:06:43.97\00:06:45.99 where they're mingling with people, 00:06:46.02\00:06:47.27 they're showing sympathy, 00:06:47.30\00:06:48.73 they are ministering to needs, their wining confidence 00:06:48.76\00:06:51.68 and they're leading people to Jesus Christ. 00:06:51.71\00:06:55.11 If you want to find out more about Adventist Mission 00:06:55.14\00:06:57.83 and One Year in Mission you can go to our website 00:06:57.86\00:07:00.89 @AdventistMission.org. 00:07:00.92\00:07:03.33 Don't go away we'll be right back after this break. 00:07:03.36\00:07:05.65
