Ted Wilson, General Conference 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.63 of Seventh-day Adventist president, 00:00:02.66\00:00:04.84 a Global Mission Pioneer in Thailand, 00:00:04.87\00:00:07.50 a church planter in the United Sates, 00:00:07.53\00:00:09.85 and a writer who has traveled the globe 00:00:09.88\00:00:12.06 gathering the best mission stories all that 00:00:12.09\00:00:14.95 and more coming up next on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:14.98\00:00:18.77 Just before He went up to heaven Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:30.46\00:00:35.99 He gave us a mission. 00:00:36.02\00:00:38.70 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:38.73\00:00:43.52 telling them of His love." 00:00:43.55\00:00:46.04 This is our Mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:46.07\00:00:49.88 Hello, and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots 00:00:56.06\00:00:58.65 where we take you around the world 00:00:58.68\00:01:00.91 to visit frontline mission. 00:01:00.94\00:01:03.54 Every Saturday or Sabbath, Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:03.57\00:01:07.17 around the world focus on mission 00:01:07.20\00:01:09.51 and they give mission offerings. 00:01:09.54\00:01:11.84 And every three months the Church focuses on special 00:01:11.87\00:01:15.08 initiatives called 13th Sabbath Offering Projects. 00:01:15.11\00:01:19.51 But they're really just a small fraction of the breadth 00:01:19.54\00:01:22.34 of the Adventist mission work taking place around the world. 00:01:22.37\00:01:26.04 There are so many exciting things happening 00:01:26.07\00:01:28.54 and if it won't such people 00:01:28.57\00:01:29.96 giving their mission offerings faithfully each week, 00:01:29.99\00:01:33.06 we wouldn't be able to see the wonderful things 00:01:33.09\00:01:35.15 happening in education, in hospitals, clinics, media, 00:01:35.18\00:01:39.42 church planting and so much more. 00:01:39.45\00:01:42.77 And so today we want to share with you 00:01:42.80\00:01:44.39 an exciting story about urban mission. 00:01:44.42\00:01:47.76 The mission challenge of the cities 00:01:47.79\00:01:49.13 is growing fast every day. 00:01:49.16\00:01:51.85 Today the vast majority of people live in cities. 00:01:51.88\00:01:55.11 And we as Christians have traditionally attended 00:01:55.14\00:01:57.38 the focus more on rural areas in villages, on islands. 00:01:57.41\00:02:02.43 But now as we focus on the cities 00:02:02.46\00:02:05.29 we need to find more and fresh and creative ways 00:02:05.32\00:02:09.50 with which we can touch people's lives for Jesus 00:02:09.53\00:02:12.63 through a comprehensive approach to evangelism. 00:02:12.66\00:02:16.31 So let's visit a pastor in North America 00:02:16.34\00:02:18.72 and see how he is touching lives by following Christ method 00:02:18.75\00:02:23.37 by mingling, by showing sympathy, 00:02:23.40\00:02:26.06 ministering to needs, by winning confidence 00:02:26.09\00:02:29.23 and then bidding people to follow Jesus. 00:02:29.26\00:02:32.11 I was asked to come in the city of Cleveland 00:02:33.79\00:02:35.96 and plant a church and I was told 00:02:35.99\00:02:39.29 that you need to live in the community 00:02:39.32\00:02:40.57 if you are gonna plant a church. 00:02:40.60\00:02:42.03 Many pastors don't even live in communities 00:02:42.06\00:02:43.82 where their churches are. 00:02:43.85\00:02:45.50 So I live less than a mile from this place. 00:02:45.53\00:02:47.53 I live in the community, I shop and walk the streets 00:02:47.56\00:02:51.33 and get engaged in this community. 00:02:51.36\00:02:53.41 People know me. 00:02:53.44\00:02:55.55 And what we do here won't work everywhere, I know that. 00:02:55.58\00:02:58.48 You can't take and replicate this in New York City 00:02:58.51\00:03:01.31 or in Atlanta, Georgia. 00:03:01.34\00:03:03.71 Most of the people that I minister to here 00:03:03.74\00:03:06.35 would not fit in a traditional, rural, 00:03:06.38\00:03:09.79 small town Adventist church. 00:03:09.82\00:03:12.47 These people are low education, low income, 00:03:12.50\00:03:16.24 been on social services all their lives 00:03:16.27\00:03:19.10 and you are not gonna turn them into a middle class, 00:03:19.13\00:03:22.74 educated Seventh-day Adventist. 00:03:22.77\00:03:24.38 The people that I'm ministering to don't get it 00:03:24.41\00:03:27.82 and they won't get it just because I come in 00:03:27.85\00:03:29.54 and give a health seminar or an evangelist campaign. 00:03:29.57\00:03:33.20 They need me to walk along side of them. 00:03:33.23\00:03:35.26 But I think that what we're doing here, 00:03:35.29\00:03:37.78 at least in Cleveland 00:03:37.81\00:03:39.17 and in the area that I'm familiar with, 00:03:39.20\00:03:41.05 is reproducible and it is effective. 00:03:41.08\00:03:45.42 Now as far as baptisms and all of that, 00:03:45.45\00:03:48.32 this is a long term ministry. 00:03:48.35\00:03:49.83 Have we gotten baptisms? Absolutely. 00:03:49.86\00:03:52.26 I've gotten over the last four years of doing this, 00:03:52.29\00:03:54.68 about a dozen baptisms, that where people have come to me 00:03:54.71\00:03:57.93 and said I want to be a part of this. 00:03:57.96\00:03:59.19 I need to take them through. 00:03:59.22\00:04:01.44 Eric is a great example of a person 00:04:01.47\00:04:04.27 who came in off the streets. 00:04:04.30\00:04:05.96 A person who was an alcoholic, a destitute, who was homeless 00:04:05.99\00:04:09.31 and he was impacted by our compassion, 00:04:09.34\00:04:13.95 not by our theological acumen. 00:04:13.98\00:04:16.97 And today he is just an amazing 00:04:17.00\00:04:20.40 example of what can happen if you spend some time 00:04:20.43\00:04:23.28 and you care about these people. 00:04:23.31\00:04:25.86 I remember when I asked Kevin to baptize me. 00:04:25.89\00:04:30.06 Then with, I mean, I don't know first time 00:04:30.09\00:04:34.07 I shook Kevin's hand it was- there was something more, 00:04:34.10\00:04:38.14 there was something about this place 00:04:38.17\00:04:39.75 that kept wanting me to come back. 00:04:39.78\00:04:44.28 And I'm glad that I did. 00:04:44.31\00:04:48.34 Like they said it, you know, 00:04:48.37\00:04:49.70 I didn't give- I don't take any credit 00:04:49.73\00:04:51.52 for my sobriety its all God. 00:04:51.55\00:04:54.45 If it wasn't for me letting God in and doing for me 00:04:54.48\00:04:59.18 what I can't do for myself I wouldn't be sober today. 00:04:59.21\00:05:02.90 I was in church one day during the week, 00:05:02.93\00:05:05.15 working on some things and I noticed, 00:05:05.18\00:05:06.82 it was in the winter, 00:05:06.85\00:05:08.04 there were some people out front at the bus stop. 00:05:08.07\00:05:11.74 And I asked them if they wanted 00:05:11.77\00:05:13.23 to come in for a hot drink and a pastry 00:05:13.26\00:05:14.76 because I had some leftover pastries, 00:05:14.79\00:05:17.62 and that's how the breakfast ministry started about 00:05:17.65\00:05:21.00 two and a half years ago. 00:05:21.03\00:05:22.45 Was just simply inviting some cold people at the bus stop 00:05:22.48\00:05:25.04 to come in for some hot drink. 00:05:25.07\00:05:27.41 From that we ended up with our breakfast ministry 00:05:27.44\00:05:30.31 which is now four days a week. 00:05:30.34\00:05:32.12 We want to make it five. 00:05:32.15\00:05:34.19 We get from 10 to- today we had 35 people show up. 00:05:34.22\00:05:38.49 Coming in we serve them a hot breakfast. 00:05:38.52\00:05:40.80 We try to serve a healthy breakfast. 00:05:40.83\00:05:43.51 Saturdays we still serve a community meal. 00:05:43.54\00:05:46.32 On average we have about a thousand community members 00:05:46.35\00:05:49.03 who walk through the door of our church every month. 00:05:49.06\00:05:53.55 Do people have a dependency on us 00:05:53.58\00:05:55.35 because of our services? 00:05:55.38\00:05:56.92 Yes, to some extent. But they know us by name. 00:05:56.95\00:06:02.71 When people come in today for the food pantry 00:06:02.74\00:06:07.89 and I'm walking around, people are calling me reverend, 00:06:07.92\00:06:10.35 or father or pastor, or whatever. 00:06:10.38\00:06:13.15 They know who I am and they know what we are. 00:06:13.18\00:06:16.21 They know the name Seventh-day Adventist. 00:06:16.24\00:06:18.32 They are not turned off by it. They are not offended by it. 00:06:18.35\00:06:21.76 They frequently take our literature. 00:06:21.79\00:06:23.90 We give away cases of literature a month 00:06:23.93\00:06:27.62 because at our foyer we have this literature rack 00:06:27.65\00:06:30.48 of all kinds of Seventh-day Adventist literature. 00:06:30.51\00:06:32.92 We give away all kinds of signs of the times magazines. 00:06:32.95\00:06:36.67 People know us. 00:06:36.70\00:06:38.19 They connect the logo and the name 00:06:38.22\00:06:40.87 and they're reading our materials. 00:06:40.90\00:06:44.43 People are taking it because they want it, 00:06:44.46\00:06:45.81 not because we send it to their door 00:06:45.84\00:06:47.34 and they throw it away. 00:06:47.37\00:06:48.53 They're coming in and reading our material. 00:06:48.56\00:06:50.47 And the reason they're doing that 00:06:50.50\00:06:51.53 is because they've got a relationship. 00:06:51.56\00:06:53.33 They put a face and flesh and bones 00:06:53.36\00:06:55.97 to a name Seventh-day Adventists. 00:06:56.00\00:06:59.43 We have great reputation. We will be moving downstairs. 00:06:59.46\00:07:02.90 I have a flyer up here in case any of you are interested. 00:07:02.93\00:07:06.82 We're starting Bible studies 00:07:06.85\00:07:08.23 on Wednesday mornings after breakfast. 00:07:08.26\00:07:10.11 It's open to everybody. 00:07:10.14\00:07:12.44 So we like to invite you to grab a flyer. 00:07:12.47\00:07:15.37 You are not gonna break into those communities, 00:07:15.40\00:07:17.52 do a big event and then just drive out. 00:07:17.55\00:07:22.28 And if you've got a lot of people driving in, 00:07:22.31\00:07:24.57 coming to that church, you will never make 00:07:24.60\00:07:26.58 the connections in the communities 00:07:26.61\00:07:27.76 that we have done by being here, 00:07:27.79\00:07:30.42 this ministry of presence. 00:07:30.45\00:07:31.57 And that's the mentality 00:07:31.60\00:07:33.40 or the message of ministry of healing. 00:07:33.43\00:07:37.29 You know Jesus' method alone is that you have to walk along 00:07:37.32\00:07:41.48 and some of them for quite a while, side these people 00:07:41.51\00:07:44.01 to build trust, confidence, 00:07:44.04\00:07:45.91 so that they can listen to what you have to share. 00:07:45.94\00:07:47.96 It's my pleasure to introduce our guest 00:07:53.69\00:07:55.67 Pastor Ted Wilson president of the General Conference 00:07:55.70\00:07:58.17 of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:07:58.20\00:07:59.99 Pastor Wilson, thank you, for joining us. 00:08:00.02\00:08:01.70 Great to be here. 00:08:01.73\00:08:03.07 Medical evangelism, 00:08:03.10\00:08:05.11 why is this an important aspect of Adventist mission? 00:08:05.14\00:08:09.96 Well, comprehensive health ministry 00:08:09.99\00:08:13.24 is something that Jesus participated 00:08:13.27\00:08:16.97 in a very dynamic way, 00:08:17.00\00:08:18.95 when He was dealing with people. 00:08:18.98\00:08:20.75 The Lord was able to touch people 00:08:20.78\00:08:23.17 in many different aspects of life. 00:08:23.20\00:08:26.07 In fact, it was a full or whole approach to the person 00:08:26.10\00:08:30.75 physically, mentally, socially and spiritually. 00:08:30.78\00:08:34.99 That's why Seventh-day Adventist are so interested 00:08:35.02\00:08:37.76 in all those areas and are interested 00:08:37.79\00:08:39.89 in helping people to grow educationally 00:08:39.92\00:08:42.86 trying to help them in physical wellbeing 00:08:42.89\00:08:46.59 and to be well adjusted people socially 00:08:46.62\00:08:49.69 and certainly Spiritually connected with the Lord. 00:08:49.72\00:08:53.41 So we want to use those approaches as Jesus did. 00:08:53.44\00:08:57.93 And in the Scripture you know a little tiny book of 3 John, 00:08:57.96\00:09:02.41 there is only one chapter in that book. 00:09:02.44\00:09:05.24 In the second verse it's says 00:09:05.27\00:09:06.59 "Beloved, I wish above all things 00:09:06.62\00:09:08.40 that thou mayest prosper and be in health, 00:09:08.43\00:09:13.08 just or even as thy soul prospereth." 00:09:13.11\00:09:16.11 So there is a real connection between 00:09:16.14\00:09:19.17 being physically healthy and spiritually healthy. 00:09:19.20\00:09:23.82 And I think as we view the world today 00:09:23.85\00:09:27.50 there are so many challenges 00:09:27.53\00:09:28.79 that people are facing and much of it 00:09:28.82\00:09:31.58 as you observe people has to do with way they live, 00:09:31.61\00:09:35.77 the stress they're under, the fast pace of life, 00:09:35.80\00:09:40.91 the food that they eat, what they drink. 00:09:40.94\00:09:44.16 All of that has to do with how they will react 00:09:44.19\00:09:49.02 in a productive manner for their life 00:09:49.05\00:09:53.38 and how they relate to others and how physically 00:09:53.41\00:09:57.20 they are able to actually exist as human beings. 00:09:57.23\00:10:01.51 Because our mind is part of our body 00:10:01.54\00:10:04.93 and there is a very sympathetic connection. 00:10:04.96\00:10:07.95 If your body is not in the best condition possible 00:10:07.98\00:10:12.95 then your mind is also going to in someway 00:10:12.98\00:10:15.38 be affected by that inhibition 00:10:15.41\00:10:19.12 that the body is producing. 00:10:19.15\00:10:21.75 So that's why Seventh-day Adventists 00:10:21.78\00:10:23.56 are so interested in good health 00:10:23.59\00:10:25.78 because we want to have a clear mind, 00:10:25.81\00:10:28.18 we want to have healthy bodies 00:10:28.21\00:10:30.19 so that we can live life 00:10:30.22\00:10:31.93 and we can live it to the fullest. 00:10:31.96\00:10:33.40 You know, the Lord came to give us life 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.70 and give it more abundantly. 00:10:35.73\00:10:38.37 So in terms of trying to help people 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.88 especially in big cities 00:10:40.91\00:10:42.74 and areas where there is a lot of pressure on their lives 00:10:42.77\00:10:46.84 in order to try and help them 00:10:46.87\00:10:48.62 we want to use comprehensive health ministry 00:10:48.65\00:10:51.36 as part of comprehensive urban evangelism, 00:10:51.39\00:10:54.50 an evangelism anywhere 00:10:54.53\00:10:56.13 whether it's in a rural area or in the city. 00:10:56.16\00:10:59.07 Health is a huge component, 00:10:59.10\00:11:01.62 that helps people to be able to function better 00:11:01.65\00:11:05.60 and to live better and we're told 00:11:05.63\00:11:07.97 that the health message, comprehensive health ministry 00:11:08.00\00:11:13.11 is really the right arm to the gospel. 00:11:13.14\00:11:15.96 It's not the gospel because the gospel 00:11:15.99\00:11:18.15 is salvation in Christ through His grace 00:11:18.18\00:11:21.61 and His shed blood for us and what He is doing for us 00:11:21.64\00:11:25.25 in the most Holy place in advocating for us 00:11:25.28\00:11:28.90 as our attorney so to speak. 00:11:28.93\00:11:31.65 But the health message is a way in which to reach people 00:11:31.68\00:11:35.46 and help them to think clear and in a more positive way 00:11:35.49\00:11:40.39 to be able to live life and to live it more abundantly. 00:11:40.42\00:11:43.56 So that's why we're giving 00:11:43.59\00:11:44.94 such a tremendous emphasis to that. 00:11:44.97\00:11:47.19 And people all over the world 00:11:47.22\00:11:48.41 are very interested in better health. 00:11:48.44\00:11:52.06 In fact, in some places you have people moving faster 00:11:52.09\00:11:56.72 and further I had then many Seventh-day Adventist 00:11:56.75\00:12:00.29 who know this precious understanding of good health. 00:12:00.32\00:12:04.59 Other people are moving way ahead 00:12:04.62\00:12:07.03 and but they're not quite sure why they're doing it. 00:12:07.06\00:12:10.16 And certainly good health is something which can provide us 00:12:10.19\00:12:14.82 with clear minds in order to be in contact with Jesus. 00:12:14.85\00:12:19.16 Elder Wilson, what plans does the church have 00:12:19.19\00:12:23.12 to put this in the practice. 00:12:23.15\00:12:24.43 I know, we already have hospitals 00:12:24.46\00:12:25.87 and clinics and health ministries 00:12:25.90\00:12:27.26 but how are we gonna do it in a comprehensive way? 00:12:27.29\00:12:29.49 What plans are in place? 00:12:29.52\00:12:30.89 Well, there are lots of interesting plant 00:12:30.92\00:12:33.07 that are being developed to try to reach people 00:12:33.10\00:12:38.58 and provide programs that will enhance their living, 00:12:38.61\00:12:45.44 stress reduction programs, programs that will help them 00:12:45.47\00:12:49.97 to stay away from tobacco and other addictions. 00:12:50.00\00:12:55.11 Cooking classes that will help them to eat better, 00:12:55.14\00:12:59.26 family oriented activities that will help them 00:12:59.29\00:13:04.04 to be placed in a better frame of mind, 00:13:04.07\00:13:07.09 know how to relate to each other better. 00:13:07.12\00:13:09.73 All kinds of different programs but one of the ways 00:13:09.76\00:13:13.76 in which we're hoping to pull those programs together 00:13:13.79\00:13:18.22 is to make every local Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:13:18.25\00:13:22.16 a health center for the community. 00:13:22.19\00:13:25.22 A place where people can say 00:13:25.25\00:13:26.95 oh, you want to know about how to live better? 00:13:26.98\00:13:30.05 Well, go talk to those people 00:13:30.08\00:13:31.72 down their and on such and such street, 00:13:31.75\00:13:33.78 they know exactly what they're talking about 00:13:33.81\00:13:35.79 and they can really help you. 00:13:35.82\00:13:37.10 Now those Seventh-day Adventist have a lot of good information 00:13:37.13\00:13:41.13 and they're very friendly people, 00:13:41.16\00:13:42.56 they're good people. 00:13:42.59\00:13:44.23 So we're hoping to be able to provide 00:13:44.26\00:13:47.30 a lot of practical information 00:13:47.33\00:13:50.56 that church members can use. 00:13:50.59\00:13:52.62 Yes, we want pastors and health professionals 00:13:52.65\00:13:55.62 working together in a blended ministry 00:13:55.65\00:13:58.31 as we're told in the Spirit of Prophecy. 00:13:58.34\00:14:00.51 That's very important but the ultimate importance 00:14:00.54\00:14:04.44 is to have every church member involved 00:14:04.47\00:14:07.00 in some kind of practical health outreach to people 00:14:07.03\00:14:11.90 because everyone can share with their neighbor, 00:14:11.93\00:14:16.39 how much better they feel 00:14:16.42\00:14:17.89 if they walk to two or three miles a day. 00:14:17.92\00:14:19.98 If they drink you know five, six, 00:14:20.01\00:14:22.11 seven glasses of water a day or eight glasses. 00:14:22.14\00:14:25.97 You don't have to prescribe any thing, 00:14:26.00\00:14:27.84 you don't have to be health professional to that. 00:14:27.87\00:14:30.39 Its simple health intervention 00:14:30.42\00:14:33.75 just in a friendly, neighborly way. 00:14:33.78\00:14:37.01 You know there is, we're told that 00:14:37.04\00:14:38.40 there is more religion in a loaf of bread than you might think. 00:14:38.43\00:14:44.41 It's not only the act of making good whole some bread, 00:14:44.44\00:14:47.95 it's the act of giving it to someone. 00:14:47.98\00:14:50.43 And then that bond is established 00:14:50.46\00:14:52.90 with the friend or a neighbor 00:14:52.93\00:14:55.00 and you know that bread just, that whole wheat bread 00:14:55.03\00:14:59.71 may actually lead someone to understand 00:14:59.74\00:15:03.19 that they need the real bread of life. 00:15:03.22\00:15:06.57 So it's all mixed in together because it's Christ method. 00:15:06.60\00:15:09.96 Fantastic. 00:15:09.99\00:15:11.02 Elder Wilson, thanks so much for sharing with us today. 00:15:11.05\00:15:13.49 Great privilege. 00:15:13.52\00:15:14.55
