00:01 A flying missionary an accidental church planter
00:04 and holistic urban mission 00:06 all that and much more coming up next 00:09 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:23 Just before He went up to heaven 00:25 Jesus gave us a command. 00:28 He gave us a mission. 00:31 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:36 telling them of His love." 00:38 This is our mission. 00:40 This is our Global Mission. 00:49 Hello, I am Gary Krause 00:50 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:52 Today we will travel to Peru, to meet an Adventist woman 00:56 who didn't plan on planting a church. 00:58 She just wanted people to worship with her on Sabbath. 01:01 And we'll talk with Dr. Gaspe Kalone 01:03 about Urban Mission. 01:05 What makes it such a challenge 01:07 and what can we do about it. 01:10 Also when people picture a missionary 01:12 they might think of a preacher or a teacher 01:15 or may be a doctor or dentist, 01:17 in reality there are many types of missionaries. 01:20 Some are builders, some are librarians, 01:22 accountants, engineers, bakers, translators 01:25 or even computer and media specialists. 01:29 Today we'll travel to Indonesia to meet a missionary pilot 01:33 who was called to fly 01:35 and after that we'll talk with 01:36 Adventist mission video producer Ricky Oliveras 01:40 who documented this high altitude mission story. 01:54 My name is Bob Roberts and my job is mission pilot. 02:01 Bob Roberts lives and works in Papua, Indonesia. 02:05 He has been flying with 02:06 Adventist Aviation Services in Indonesia 02:09 for more than 20 years. 02:11 He has seen all kinds of things, 02:13 and met thousands of people hungry to learn about Jesus. 02:16 On a typical morning Bob gets up, 02:18 checks to make sure 02:19 everything is okay with the plane, 02:21 and climbs in for a ride. 02:28 He delivers supplies, visits villages, 02:31 and transports people throughout the many islands of this region. 02:35 If you look on the map 02:36 you will see that the island is split in half. 02:39 The eastern side is the country of Papua New Guinea, 02:42 while the western half is part of Indonesia. 02:46 Here in Papua, there are huge mission challenges. 02:49 The first obstacle is getting to the people. 02:52 The terrain here is extremely rough. 02:55 Mountains, rivers, and dense jungle 02:58 make it nearly impossible to walk through. 03:00 To reach some of these villages by foot, 03:03 it can take weeks of hiking 03:05 and chopping through this terrain. 03:07 That's where Adventist Aviation Services 03:10 comes to the rescue. 03:11 Trips that used to take weeks 03:13 now take hours thanks to Bob's flying. 03:16 These islands contain more than 500 language groups. 03:20 You can imagine how difficult it is 03:22 to reach so many languages in an area 03:24 made up of hundreds of islands. 03:27 Almost 90 percent of these people 03:29 have never even heard the gospel. 03:32 Bob flies to reach the unreached. 03:34 He has been flying for the 03:36 Seventh-day Adventist Church for almost 40 years now. 03:39 He spent a number of years flying in Africa 03:41 before coming to Indonesia. 03:43 His experience in the air is extremely valuable 03:46 to the mission work in Indonesia. 03:48 This is where he feels at home 03:50 and where God has called him to fly. 03:55 When visiting this small city in West Papua, 03:58 Bob discovered that the local Adventist pastor's 04:01 father was very sick and had no way to see him. 04:04 If he took a boat to visit his father, 04:06 it could take days. 04:07 The pastor was very disappointed 04:09 that he may never see his father again. 04:12 Bob offered to fly him to the nearby city 04:14 to visit his father. 04:16 With the services of the Adventist Aviation plane, 04:19 the Pastor was able to see his father again 04:21 and share encouraging words with him. 04:24 Bob often transports sick people to get medical attention. 04:27 Many of the small cities 04:29 and villages have no medical facilities. 04:31 Commercial planes rarely or never fly some places. 04:35 Even with small commercial planes, 04:37 it is very expensive 04:38 for a villager to afford a ticket. 04:41 We fly a lot of sick people, 04:43 and when we do fly sick people we fly them for free 04:48 if they're really sick. 04:50 Bob's flying is a ministry. 04:52 He cares about the people he visits. 04:54 He wants to bring the message and hope of Jesus 04:57 to the people of Indonesia. 04:59 So those are the kind of things 05:01 that make you glad you're a mission pilot 05:04 helping people that would not have a hope otherwise. 05:08 And that's why we're here. 05:10 Please pray for Bob 05:11 as he continues to fly for Jesus. 05:13 Pray for the hundreds of workers around the world 05:16 who have left the comforts of home to serve. 05:18 Thank you for supporting the mission 05:20 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 05:29 My guest is Ricky Oliveras video producer 05:31 who actually produced the video that we just saw. 05:34 Ricky, thanks so much for joining us. 05:36 Thank you, for having me. 05:37 Now what an amazing experience to go to Irian Jaya. 05:39 And to fly through that sort of territory. 05:43 What were the filming opportunities like? 05:45 Oh, there're many filming opportunities. 05:47 It's been, you know, for years actually 05:49 I wanted to go to that region of the world. 05:52 So for me I was just soaking everything 05:54 and it's such a visual opportunity. 05:57 Yeah. 05:58 And being in the air with Bob, 06:00 being on the ground with the people, 06:03 there is just- you turn left you turn right 06:05 and there is always something to point my camera at. 06:08 Yeah, so Irian Jaya borders Papua New Guinea same island, 06:13 part of Indonesia. 06:15 Now in this region there's large territories of it 06:18 that really haven't been explored, right? 06:20 Oh yeah, absolutely, this is a very remote area. 06:24 You have to- to get some of the villages 06:27 you would have to hike in the jungles for weeks 06:30 literally chopping through with the machete for weeks. 06:34 And so that can show you how remote it is. 06:37 Yeah. 06:38 And you have to find to get to some of these areas 06:40 and there're still places that haven't been 06:43 you know seen before. 06:45 Well, so there're potentially there are tribes they are 06:47 that have never been reached from outside world. 06:49 Exactly. 06:50 So Ricky, tell me about 06:52 what Bob Roberts is doing there as a pilot. 06:55 Well, Bob he is an incredible person. 06:57 He is being flying in small airplanes 07:00 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church alone 07:03 for about, you know, more than 40 years now. 07:05 Wow. 07:06 He is been flying in Irian Jaya 07:07 or West Papua its now called- 07:11 For more than 20 years. Is that right? 07:13 He has so much experience. 07:14 I felt very safe flying with him. 07:17 If I was gonna fly with anybody 07:19 in that remote location it was with him. 07:23 Now, I don't know what it's like in West Papua 07:25 but in Papua New Guinea 07:27 some of the airport landing strips 07:30 are pretty treacherous. 07:31 Did you have any there 07:33 that made you catch your breath? 07:35 I was personally fortunate enough. 07:37 He took me to some of the nicer runways 07:40 and then we made our way inland from there. 07:43 But you know looking down from the plane 07:46 we passed the few runways I saw that were, you know, 07:50 a little you know questionable. 07:52 Yeah, exactly. 07:53 So yeah it can be a tough place to fly, to work 07:59 and that's why his experience is so important. 08:01 Yeah and another his missionary has spirit has been passed on 08:05 because he has a son who is a missionary part as well. 08:08 That's right. 08:10 Ricky, when you talked with Bob what did you- 08:13 I mean your feelings, what motivates him, 08:15 what keeps him going out there? 08:18 Well, for him he just really loves the people 08:22 and to me I thought that was really cool, really valuable. 08:27 I noticed when we are on the ground, 08:30 he is not just sitting in the background 08:31 he is the first one into a home talking to the people 08:35 and he's been there for 20 years now. 08:36 So he speaks little the Indonesian with the people. 08:40 And they get a kick out of it 08:42 and so he is just really motivated by 08:45 you know sharing God with the people 08:47 and just getting to know them personally. 08:49 And for him he gets to know them 08:52 and that really opens the door to share about God. 08:54 Yeah. 08:55 He doesn't go in preaching or and you know 08:57 immediately you know with the Bible in hand. 08:59 First thing first he goes and, you know, gets to know them. 09:04 Sees, what they need and actually he is 09:08 as a side job to piloting 09:10 he is also a dentist on the side. 09:12 So that gives you an idea you know one of the basic needs 09:15 that he helps to fulfill in all these remote communities. 09:19 He goes and pulls teeth, does basic dental work there. 09:22 Okay, so he and his wife working there, 09:27 they wouldn't be there 09:28 if it wasn't for mission offerings 09:29 and tithes so they're supported from that. 09:33 What about Global Mission Projects. 09:34 What sort of, are there any Global Mission projects 09:37 happening there? 09:38 Well, this region of the world 09:40 is officially just getting launched 09:42 with Global Mission Projects. 09:44 But there are still lots of church planters in this area. 09:49 And its really cool to see 09:50 because like in many remote parts of the world 09:53 it starts from small seed where one person you know 09:57 has a gospel in hand and they really, 10:00 you know, they spread it to their community. 10:01 They go some times from door to door, 10:04 some times they you know talk to a group of people 10:07 and it really helps to grow the church. 10:09 So I visited one church with a church planter 10:14 who's been there for about you know 30 years 10:18 and they have a beautiful church on the top of the hill 10:20 and the church is growing so much 10:22 that there are starting another church, 10:24 a whole new building because people having to travel 10:27 from the other side of the island 10:28 to come to this one church. 10:30 And so they are starting a church 10:32 on their side of the island and its really growing. 10:35 I mean, people are hungry to learn about Jesus 10:38 to learn about the Gospel. 10:40 And it's pretty amazing to see because it's a remote place 10:43 hence you would wonder, you know 10:46 have they heard about Jesus there. 10:49 And I didn't know before I went 10:50 so I was really impressed to see 10:53 how much work they're doing but that being said 10:56 there is still a lot of work to be done. 10:58 Yeah. It's not over. 10:59 No. 11:00 And through church planters, through Global Mission 11:03 which is getting off the ground there in that region now 11:08 and through you know many- 11:10 Bob's flying through all these various ways 11:15 you know people are learning. 11:16 Yeah. 11:17 Ricky, that was a fantastic video 11:19 and it appears on this one- not this particular one 11:22 but this DVD called Mission 360 DVD 11:27 and Ricky produces this DVD every quarter 11:32 and if you'd like a free sample view at your home, 11:34 if you'd like a free sample of this DVD, 11:36 Mission 360 DVD 11:38 just the information is on your screen, you can call, 11:42 you can go to our website 11:44 and you can see these missions stories. 11:46 Where can these mission stories be used? 11:49 Obviously, at home you can watch them 11:50 but how else can you use these really? 11:52 There are a lot of different ways 11:53 you can use this. 11:54 You can use it in Sabbath school, 11:55 you could use in a church setting between, you know, 12:00 any slot of time you have in a school. 12:04 Yeah. 12:05 At home and pretty much anywhere. 12:08 If you want to see really interesting things 12:10 that are happening with mission 12:12 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 12:14 you have the opportunity online on the DVD. 12:17 Fantastic, yeah that's right. 12:18 You can actually go to AdventistMission.org 12:20 and download stories from this. 12:23 But if you'd like a copy a personal copy 12:25 the information is on your screen. 12:28 Well thank you so much for joining us. 12:29 Hey, Ricky, I really appreciate it. 12:31 And viewers at home please pray for missionaries 12:34 such as Bob Roberts 12:36 and pray for Global Mission work all around the world. |
