A school for the deaf India, 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.17 a student who set out 00:00:02.20\00:00:03.51 to prove his Adventist friend wrong, 00:00:03.54\00:00:06.09 and an urban centre of influence in North America. 00:00:06.12\00:00:09.43 All that and much more coming up next 00:00:09.46\00:00:11.83 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:11.86\00:00:13.86 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:25.87\00:00:28.37 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:28.40\00:00:31.25 He gave us a mission. 00:00:31.28\00:00:34.07 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:34.10\00:00:38.87 tell them of His love." 00:00:38.90\00:00:41.36 This is our mission. 00:00:41.39\00:00:43.47 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:43.50\00:00:45.57 Hello, I'm Gary Krause 00:00:51.18\00:00:52.29 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:52.32\00:00:55.28 Too often as Christians 00:00:55.31\00:00:56.48 we brush aside peoples physical needs. 00:00:56.51\00:01:00.06 We ignore their wants and their hurts 00:01:00.09\00:01:02.42 and we get straight to the Bible and to spiritual issues. 00:01:02.45\00:01:06.58 When Jesus was here on earth, 00:01:06.61\00:01:08.19 He fed people, He healed people 00:01:08.22\00:01:11.02 and He touched them physically 00:01:11.05\00:01:12.80 often before He began to meet their so called spiritual needs. 00:01:12.83\00:01:17.99 One of the best ways to follow Christ's method of ministry 00:01:18.02\00:01:21.26 is through urban centers of influence. 00:01:21.29\00:01:24.01 These are small centers of holistic outreach. 00:01:24.04\00:01:27.86 Today we'll talk to Wes Via director of Simplicity 00:01:27.89\00:01:31.85 an urban outreach initiative in Allentown, Pennsylvania. 00:01:31.88\00:01:35.89 We'll also talk with Cheryl Doss, 00:01:35.92\00:01:37.37 director of the Institute of World Mission 00:01:37.40\00:01:40.08 about how following Christ's example 00:01:40.11\00:01:42.73 works despite cultural and language differences. 00:01:42.76\00:01:46.89 But first let's visit a school for the deaf in India. 00:01:46.92\00:01:50.55 To most people, a crowded city street in India 00:01:52.21\00:01:54.85 sounds like this. 00:01:54.88\00:01:56.19 But since Sundramma was born, 00:02:00.84\00:02:02.66 city streets sounded like this. 00:02:02.69\00:02:05.46 You see, Sundramma is deaf. 00:02:09.28\00:02:11.38 She cannot hear or speak with words. 00:02:11.41\00:02:13.69 She talks with her hands. 00:02:13.72\00:02:15.87 Sundramma was not always able to communicate 00:02:15.90\00:02:18.19 using sign language. 00:02:18.22\00:02:19.89 When she was young she couldn't go to school 00:02:19.92\00:02:22.12 because the school could not accommodate deaf children. 00:02:22.15\00:02:25.11 Her family was sad 00:02:25.14\00:02:26.18 that she would not receive an education 00:02:26.21\00:02:27.77 like the other children her age. 00:02:27.80\00:02:29.97 One day a woman knocked on their door 00:02:30.00\00:02:32.31 and told them about a school for the deaf 00:02:32.34\00:02:33.98 run by the Seventh-day Adventists 00:02:34.01\00:02:35.66 and invited Sundramma to attend. 00:02:35.69\00:02:38.35 The family was so happy 00:02:38.38\00:02:40.01 they could hardly contain their excitement. 00:02:40.04\00:02:42.53 At first, Sundramma had a difficult time learning. 00:02:42.56\00:02:45.67 She was not used to school and missed her family. 00:02:45.70\00:02:48.60 But the more time she spent here the easier it became 00:02:48.63\00:02:51.93 and the more she wanted to stay. 00:02:51.96\00:02:54.00 Sundramma eventually learned sign language 00:02:54.03\00:02:56.44 and could talk to her friends. 00:02:56.47\00:02:59.69 At this school she also learned about Jesus. 00:02:59.72\00:03:02.48 The teacher would take the class outside 00:03:02.51\00:03:04.31 and teach them all the lessons from the Bible. 00:03:04.34\00:03:07.08 Sundramma was fascinated by the stories she learned. 00:03:07.11\00:03:09.89 She loved the Adventist education she received. 00:03:09.92\00:03:13.01 Now Sundramma is older. 00:03:13.04\00:03:15.11 She shares her faith with her family and neighbors. 00:03:15.14\00:03:18.21 When people don't understand sign language, 00:03:18.24\00:03:20.33 she writes notes to tell them of Jesus' love. 00:03:20.36\00:03:23.31 She can read and write in English 00:03:23.34\00:03:25.64 and her local language. 00:03:25.67\00:03:27.69 If it were not for Adventist education, 00:03:27.72\00:03:29.83 Sundramma would not be able to communicate 00:03:29.86\00:03:32.02 and share the way she does now. 00:03:32.05\00:03:34.64 Please pray for this school 00:03:34.67\00:03:35.99 and other Adventist schools throughout India. 00:03:36.02\00:03:38.56 Pray that they can teach our children 00:03:38.59\00:03:40.16 the wonderful lessons of Jesus. 00:03:40.19\00:03:42.82 And thank you for supporting the mission 00:03:42.85\00:03:44.90 of the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:03:44.93\00:03:46.98 I'm pleased to introduce our guest 00:03:58.90\00:04:00.56 Doctor Cheryl Doss who is the director 00:04:00.59\00:04:02.61 of the Institute of World Mission. 00:04:02.64\00:04:04.73 Cheryl, thanks so much for joining us. 00:04:04.76\00:04:06.59 We're talking about something that is dear to your heart 00:04:06.62\00:04:10.62 which is the, the way that missionary families adapt, 00:04:10.65\00:04:15.43 cope with the challenges of being missionaries 00:04:15.46\00:04:17.98 in another culture. 00:04:18.01\00:04:20.45 Why do you have an interest in this? 00:04:20.48\00:04:22.86 Well, probably because I come from a missionary family 00:04:22.89\00:04:26.18 and experienced it firsthand. 00:04:26.21\00:04:27.98 My parents and myself and now our children 00:04:28.01\00:04:31.53 have moved their families internationally. 00:04:31.56\00:04:33.56 And I can tell you 00:04:33.59\00:04:34.63 I know how difficult it is and also how rewarding it is. 00:04:34.66\00:04:38.29 So I'm very interested in helping other families 00:04:38.32\00:04:40.29 who are doing the same thing. 00:04:40.32\00:04:41.71 So one of the major tasks of the institute 00:04:41.74\00:04:44.03 is to help prepare Adventist families 00:04:44.06\00:04:47.37 who are going as missionaries to other cultures 00:04:47.40\00:04:49.26 what sort of things do you teach them and, 00:04:49.29\00:04:51.34 and interact with them about? 00:04:51.37\00:04:54.90 You know, one of the things we, 00:04:54.93\00:04:56.50 we realized early on was the, 00:04:56.53\00:04:59.04 the fact that they have picked their families 00:04:59.07\00:05:01.58 and just come to mission institute 00:05:01.61\00:05:03.26 often across numerous time zones with children 00:05:03.29\00:05:05.83 who may be sick or way to any other- 00:05:05.86\00:05:07.84 in the midst of a transition that we need to start right off 00:05:07.87\00:05:10.97 we're talking about transition 00:05:11.00\00:05:12.31 and what that means for families. 00:05:12.34\00:05:14.19 And they're so many good tools 00:05:14.22\00:05:15.43 out there to help missionary families 00:05:15.46\00:05:17.13 understand what they're going through 00:05:17.16\00:05:18.82 and the fact that there is a normal process to be. 00:05:18.85\00:05:23.10 It's normal to have a lot of grief attached to it. 00:05:23.13\00:05:25.80 Anytime you've lost the life- 00:05:25.83\00:05:27.75 lost so many things you've had to say good-bye to people, 00:05:27.78\00:05:30.37 and places and all those things are dear to you. 00:05:30.40\00:05:34.49 That's a loss, it has to be grieved. 00:05:34.52\00:05:36.49 And the transition itself is often feels very chaotic 00:05:36.52\00:05:39.92 because you're stuffing is somewhere in the world, 00:05:39.95\00:05:43.46 your family somewhere in the world, 00:05:43.49\00:05:45.52 you don't know how to live or act in this new place. 00:05:45.55\00:05:48.38 And so there is an inner chaos 00:05:48.41\00:05:50.07 that goes on as well as an outer one. 00:05:50.10\00:05:52.26 And the entering process can also be very challenging 00:05:52.29\00:05:55.05 as one tries to find a way into this new place 00:05:55.08\00:05:57.88 and figure out how to live here 00:05:57.91\00:05:59.73 and how to relate to people. 00:05:59.76\00:06:02.19 They say that culture shock is a being 00:06:02.22\00:06:04.45 out of rhythm with the culture. 00:06:04.48\00:06:05.66 You know every culture has a rhythm, 00:06:05.69\00:06:07.01 and you're out of rhythm 00:06:07.04\00:06:08.07 and that's an uncomfortable place to be. 00:06:08.10\00:06:10.13 You're marginal to the culture. 00:06:10.16\00:06:11.45 So helping them understand this process 00:06:11.48\00:06:13.84 and the fact that all these feelings, emotions, 00:06:13.87\00:06:16.41 the stresses in the family 00:06:16.44\00:06:18.00 this is a normal process of doing a very difficult task. 00:06:18.03\00:06:21.01 Yeah, so you work through this with them 00:06:21.04\00:06:23.48 when they actually get into the field 00:06:23.51\00:06:25.54 and they confront challenges. 00:06:25.57\00:06:27.36 Is there anyone they can turn to 00:06:27.39\00:06:29.12 or what do you advice in that situation? 00:06:29.15\00:06:31.61 Well, we give a number of resources 00:06:31.64\00:06:34.06 during the mission institutes, 00:06:34.09\00:06:35.57 books that have articles and articles 00:06:35.60\00:06:37.57 and so on that address the different issues involved- 00:06:37.60\00:06:41.41 schooling issues for the kids. 00:06:41.44\00:06:42.89 And you know those sorts of many, 00:06:42.92\00:06:44.58 many of those types of things. 00:06:44.61\00:06:46.23 And then they can also return to us. 00:06:46.26\00:06:48.80 We're quite happy to have them write to us if there is a need. 00:06:48.83\00:06:52.70 But one of the, the need things with social media 00:06:52.73\00:06:55.14 right now is that every group of missionary 00:06:55.17\00:06:57.04 doing mission institute 00:06:57.07\00:06:58.72 has their own Facebook page. 00:06:58.75\00:07:00.62 This is a closed group, a hidden group 00:07:00.65\00:07:02.83 so they can be quite open and honest, 00:07:02.86\00:07:04.67 they make good friends during their time together 00:07:04.70\00:07:07.12 and we have people posting things on there. 00:07:07.15\00:07:09.52 I hit the culture wall today please pray me. 00:07:09.55\00:07:12.16 Now that sort of thing 00:07:12.19\00:07:13.90 and then they feel supported by this group 00:07:13.93\00:07:16.14 that they have, they have spent three weeks 00:07:16.17\00:07:18.82 working through the issues with. 00:07:18.85\00:07:20.55 Now one of your challenges of course is- 00:07:20.58\00:07:22.44 it's not like you're dealing with people 00:07:22.47\00:07:23.85 who're just coming from America to get other countries. 00:07:23.88\00:07:27.06 They are coming from all around the world. 00:07:27.09\00:07:28.80 Yes, yes. 00:07:28.83\00:07:29.86 So you're dealing with culture 00:07:29.89\00:07:31.07 on the end of where they're coming from different, 00:07:31.10\00:07:33.05 I mean how do you juggle with all? 00:07:33.08\00:07:34.93 Yeah, well that, the one of the important things 00:07:34.96\00:07:37.59 we try to do right at the beginning 00:07:37.62\00:07:38.99 of our mission institute is to create a safe environment 00:07:39.02\00:07:42.32 where we can explore our differences 00:07:42.35\00:07:45.19 and our similarities. Yes. 00:07:45.22\00:07:46.70 Because we need to affirm the fact 00:07:46.73\00:07:50.97 that God has created us in so many different ways. 00:07:51.00\00:07:53.48 He is created- given people the ability 00:07:53.51\00:07:55.77 to creatively make cultures that are so diverse. 00:07:55.80\00:07:59.73 And that, that's it's a God given gift to His church. 00:07:59.76\00:08:03.49 So and yet we do know that 00:08:03.52\00:08:06.28 when people get out to the field 00:08:06.31\00:08:07.69 and there's nobody that speaks their heart language 00:08:07.72\00:08:10.51 this can be a very lonely place to be. 00:08:10.54\00:08:13.03 So how do you create community 00:08:13.06\00:08:15.03 across those kinds of cultural linguistic barriers 00:08:15.06\00:08:20.12 and so we try to do that during mission institute 00:08:20.15\00:08:22.47 to give kind of a pattern for it 00:08:22.50\00:08:24.65 or we make people sit at tables with those 00:08:24.68\00:08:26.95 who are very different from themselves. 00:08:26.98\00:08:28.50 Nobody can sit with somebody else 00:08:28.53\00:08:29.85 of their own nationality for example 00:08:29.88\00:08:31.94 or hopefully their own profession. 00:08:31.97\00:08:35.90 They try to, we try to mix things up 00:08:35.93\00:08:37.58 so people actually practice it during mission institute. 00:08:37.61\00:08:41.26 And then of course, 00:08:41.29\00:08:44.33 being forewarned is often forearmed. 00:08:44.36\00:08:47.14 If you know that you're going out to a place 00:08:47.17\00:08:50.11 were their won't be anybody who is just like you 00:08:50.14\00:08:54.62 then you're little more willing to accept 00:08:54.65\00:08:57.78 that of the discomfort that comes and the difficulty 00:08:57.81\00:09:00.30 of creating new relationships 00:09:00.33\00:09:01.87 across not only to the national culture 00:09:01.90\00:09:05.57 but to your fellow workers who are also different? 00:09:05.60\00:09:09.17 And we try to help people figure out ways 00:09:09.20\00:09:11.71 to keep connection with their home culture 00:09:11.74\00:09:15.16 ways in which they can create support 00:09:15.19\00:09:18.26 for themselves from the home. 00:09:18.29\00:09:20.47 Which raises the issue 00:09:20.50\00:09:21.80 when they actually comeback to their home how do, 00:09:21.83\00:09:24.16 how do we deal with that challenge then? 00:09:24.19\00:09:26.75 Yeah, well we have a reentry program here in the US. 00:09:26.78\00:09:29.83 And it is more of a debriefing than an educational thing 00:09:29.86\00:09:35.39 where people need to sort through their experiences 00:09:35.42\00:09:38.31 because the intercultural experience is very intense. 00:09:38.34\00:09:42.01 It's emotionally intense, 00:09:42.04\00:09:43.44 it's physically often intense as well 00:09:43.47\00:09:46.07 social certainly socially intense. 00:09:46.10\00:09:48.00 And that intensities it seers the memories into to ones heart 00:09:48.03\00:09:52.52 but without a way of processing through them 00:09:52.55\00:09:54.72 it's hard to interpret into the new life one is going to. 00:09:54.75\00:09:57.97 So that process of reentry is, 00:09:58.00\00:09:59.74 it also becomes very important 00:09:59.77\00:10:01.42 to their ongoing service for the church. 00:10:01.45\00:10:03.44 Okay, that's great and so, 00:10:03.47\00:10:04.93 so we've been focusing on the challenges. 00:10:04.96\00:10:06.72 But what about the joys. 00:10:06.75\00:10:07.78 I mean, how does this affect young people in a family 00:10:07.81\00:10:10.81 who got for this sort of experience? 00:10:10.84\00:10:12.65 Well, as we have we know we've four generations 00:10:12.68\00:10:15.49 of missionary kids in our Church. 00:10:15.52\00:10:17.40 And I mean, in our family, 00:10:17.43\00:10:19.17 in our personal, my personal family. 00:10:19.20\00:10:21.23 And so I can tell you its quite possible to rise kids 00:10:21.26\00:10:24.04 who are excited about the mission. 00:10:24.07\00:10:27.00 God calls and once we want to continue that mission 00:10:27.03\00:10:30.62 but it helps to have the tools. 00:10:30.65\00:10:33.53 And that's one of the things we try to give. 00:10:33.56\00:10:35.30 There's excellent literature out there. 00:10:35.33\00:10:37.86 There is good support on the internet 00:10:37.89\00:10:39.49 now you can get from missionary families 00:10:39.52\00:10:42.17 understanding that this will change 00:10:42.20\00:10:44.08 your family's life forever 00:10:44.11\00:10:46.63 in ways that you that can become a strength 00:10:46.66\00:10:51.00 to your family and bring a lot of joy. 00:10:51.03\00:10:53.64 I think missionary families in general are people 00:10:53.67\00:10:57.01 who though they have face challenges, 00:10:57.04\00:10:59.69 they'll overcome them. 00:10:59.72\00:11:00.75 Yes. 00:11:00.78\00:11:01.81 And that has made them better broader stronger people. 00:11:01.84\00:11:04.53 Enriching. 00:11:04.56\00:11:05.59 It can and it should do that, that's our goal. 00:11:05.62\00:11:07.38 Interesting, Cheryl, thank you, so much for joining us today. 00:11:07.41\00:11:12.10 Viewers at home, I grew up always at home 00:11:12.13\00:11:14.71 and for family worship 00:11:14.74\00:11:15.77 we would pray for the missionaries. 00:11:15.80\00:11:17.50 I think that may be bit of a lost out Cheryl, 00:11:17.53\00:11:19.41 but we need to pray, it's so important. 00:11:19.44\00:11:22.20 To help remind you 00:11:22.23\00:11:23.88 we would like to send you this calendar 00:11:23.91\00:11:25.99 if you live in North America the details are the screen. 00:11:26.02\00:11:28.93 The faces of mission a beautiful face 00:11:28.96\00:11:32.38 from around the world for every month of the year. 00:11:32.41\00:11:35.51 And it will help you to remind, help remind you 00:11:35.54\00:11:37.97 to pray for these special people. 00:11:38.00\00:11:39.90 We'll be right back after this break. 00:11:39.93\00:11:41.70
