Global Mission pioneers in India and South Africa, 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.29 three things every missionary should know, 00:00:04.32\00:00:07.43 and one of the most popular Adventist mission music videos, 00:00:07.46\00:00:10.83 all that and much more 00:00:10.86\00:00:12.33 coming up next on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:12.36\00:00:15.72 Just before He went up to heaven 00:00:27.10\00:00:29.56 Jesus gave us a command. He gave us a mission. 00:00:29.59\00:00:35.30 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:35.33\00:00:40.06 telling them of His love." 00:00:40.09\00:00:42.62 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:42.65\00:00:46.70 Hello, I'm Gary Krause 00:00:52.64\00:00:53.70 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:53.73\00:00:55.99 On today's program we'll be talking with Laurie Falvo, 00:00:56.02\00:00:59.32 a managing editor from Mission 360 Magazine. 00:00:59.35\00:01:02.75 Recently, Laurie visited South Africa 00:01:02.78\00:01:05.26 to visit Global Mission projects 00:01:05.29\00:01:07.55 and she met a pastor who had to make a life changing decision 00:01:07.58\00:01:11.70 to himself, his family, and his church. 00:01:11.73\00:01:15.65 We'll also be talking with Cheryl Doss, 00:01:15.68\00:01:17.55 director of the Institute of World Mission 00:01:17.58\00:01:20.36 to find out what you should know 00:01:20.39\00:01:22.18 before you head overseas for mission. 00:01:22.21\00:01:25.05 As a former missionary and now a trainer 00:01:25.08\00:01:27.52 of cross culture missionaries 00:01:27.55\00:01:29.57 Cheryl has a wealth of experience 00:01:29.60\00:01:31.58 and personal knowledge to share. 00:01:31.61\00:01:33.92 But first, let's travel to India 00:01:33.95\00:01:36.59 to meet a Global Mission pioneer. 00:01:36.62\00:01:38.90 This small group of believers makes up 00:01:46.08\00:01:48.47 the Seventh-day Adventist church in a small city in India. 00:01:48.50\00:01:52.32 This city lies at the foot 00:01:52.35\00:01:53.61 of the Himalayas on the border of Bhutan. 00:01:53.64\00:01:56.73 People here may not have a lot of material possessions 00:01:56.76\00:01:59.73 but once they get to know Jesus 00:01:59.76\00:02:01.50 they know they have everything they need. 00:02:01.53\00:02:04.56 This group loves to sing and worship God. 00:02:04.59\00:02:11.73 Over the years the group has grown 00:02:11.76\00:02:13.77 to include people with many different stories 00:02:13.80\00:02:16.49 and backgrounds. 00:02:16.52\00:02:18.03 This congregation exits 00:02:18.06\00:02:19.75 thanks to the work of Global Mission pioneers. 00:02:19.78\00:02:22.83 Global Mission pioneers plant churches 00:02:22.86\00:02:25.23 and share Jesus with people in communities 00:02:25.26\00:02:27.60 who may not know Him. 00:02:27.63\00:02:32.55 Asha is one of these Global Mission pioneers. 00:02:32.58\00:02:35.78 Her favorite thing is to introduce people to Jesus. 00:02:35.81\00:02:39.26 She visits people in their homes where they feel most comfortable 00:02:39.29\00:02:42.32 and willing to ask questions. 00:02:42.35\00:02:44.45 When people have questions about the Bible 00:02:44.48\00:02:46.56 Asha is able to answer them confidently. 00:02:46.59\00:02:49.72 She studies her Bible a lot. 00:02:49.75\00:02:53.32 She has no formal training, no degree, she just has a desire 00:02:53.35\00:02:57.70 to spread God's message to her neighbors. 00:02:57.73\00:03:01.60 Her children are also interested 00:03:01.63\00:03:03.19 in reaching out to the community. 00:03:03.22\00:03:06.87 Today, they are joining Asha as she visits a home. 00:03:06.90\00:03:10.01 They have visited this home a few times already. 00:03:10.04\00:03:14.36 As they approach the door a smiling face greets 00:03:14.39\00:03:17.28 and welcomes them in. 00:03:17.31\00:03:18.93 The owner has been waiting for their visits 00:03:18.96\00:03:20.79 and is eager to learn more about the Bible. 00:03:20.82\00:03:24.18 Asha reads stories to the man 00:03:24.21\00:03:25.80 who has never heard them before. 00:03:25.83\00:03:28.24 A simple lesson, a song, and a prayer are enough 00:03:28.27\00:03:31.86 to make a huge impact. 00:03:31.89\00:03:34.04 The owner of the house is thinking about being baptized. 00:03:34.07\00:03:37.62 Without Asha's efforts, many people 00:03:37.65\00:03:40.13 would not have heard about the love of Jesus. 00:03:40.16\00:03:42.94 Your faithful support of Global Mission is 00:03:42.97\00:03:45.06 what brings Jesus to areas like this. 00:03:45.09\00:03:47.92 Global Mission pioneers have planted seeds 00:03:47.95\00:03:50.38 in this part of India, which have now grown 00:03:50.41\00:03:52.81 into a healthy group of believers. 00:03:52.84\00:03:55.91 Please pray for this group as they continue to grow, 00:03:55.94\00:03:59.23 and pray for Global Mission pioneers, 00:03:59.26\00:04:01.78 like Asha, who are reaching those around her 00:04:01.81\00:04:04.83 and teaching them of God's love. 00:04:04.86\00:04:07.51 I'm glad to welcome our guest Dr. Cheryl Doss. 00:04:16.64\00:04:19.36 And Cheryl, you are the director of the Institute 00:04:19.39\00:04:21.30 of World Mission, thanks for joining us. 00:04:21.33\00:04:24.02 Institute of World Mission is a institute set up 00:04:24.05\00:04:27.47 by the World Church to train missionaries 00:04:27.50\00:04:30.62 to be effective in their ministry. 00:04:30.65\00:04:32.81 What does that involve? 00:04:32.84\00:04:34.93 Well, it involves bringing together people 00:04:34.96\00:04:37.25 from all over the world who are being sent out 00:04:37.28\00:04:39.48 by the World Church into cross cultural settings. 00:04:39.51\00:04:42.84 Families, parents, children, and working through 00:04:42.87\00:04:47.09 a three-week series of classes together 00:04:47.12\00:04:50.46 as we think about their call and what God asked them 00:04:50.49\00:04:53.50 to do in mission, what they need to be. 00:04:53.53\00:04:55.92 So, I mean, we're just called to preach the Word right, 00:04:55.95\00:04:59.50 so why do we need to have this sort of training? 00:04:59.53\00:05:02.69 Because people are different from everywhere 00:05:02.72\00:05:05.37 and tasks are different. 00:05:05.40\00:05:06.79 Peoples tasks are different and it's not an easy thing 00:05:06.82\00:05:09.71 to move a family of cross cultures. 00:05:09.74\00:05:12.43 It's not an easy thing to pick your profession up 00:05:12.46\00:05:16.88 and do it in another place. 00:05:16.91\00:05:19.25 And we tell people we're not here 00:05:19.28\00:05:20.71 to make them better doctors or better humanitarian workers 00:05:20.74\00:05:24.38 and that's the professionals skills 00:05:24.41\00:05:26.34 they probably are or well-versed in 00:05:26.37\00:05:29.04 but we are there together to think about the mission. 00:05:29.07\00:05:32.41 What does it mean to be a missionary. 00:05:32.44\00:05:34.83 And even if you're skilled doctor in this culture 00:05:34.86\00:05:38.47 you have to do it differently in a difficult culture. 00:05:38.50\00:05:40.58 Right. People are different. 00:05:40.61\00:05:42.31 The task will be definitely different impacted 00:05:42.34\00:05:45.28 by the social and economic levels 00:05:45.31\00:05:49.31 and every, every kind of thing it's different. 00:05:49.34\00:05:51.26 I mean just thinking out what people eat 00:05:51.29\00:05:53.11 in a new culture can be a challenge. 00:05:53.14\00:05:54.17 You are right. Exactly. 00:05:54.20\00:05:56.17 Now you have three major areas that you summarize 00:05:56.20\00:06:00.39 in terms of teaching people to a cross-cultural. 00:06:00.42\00:06:03.37 What are those three areas? 00:06:03.40\00:06:04.62 Yeah, well, we always tell missionaries 00:06:04.65\00:06:06.48 that the three most important things 00:06:06.51\00:06:07.89 they need to be or to do to have is 00:06:07.92\00:06:10.75 to be adaptable, adaptable and adaptable. 00:06:10.78\00:06:13.77 So adaptability is very important thing 00:06:13.80\00:06:15.79 but we have five, five areas that we actually emphasize 00:06:15.82\00:06:18.84 they are kind of objectives for our training. 00:06:18.87\00:06:22.67 The first one is that missionaries need 00:06:22.70\00:06:24.27 to be people who are growing spiritually. 00:06:24.30\00:06:26.40 Unless you have been impacted by the gospel 00:06:26.43\00:06:29.18 and growing in discipleship you have little or nothing to share. 00:06:29.21\00:06:32.75 Second one is to be missionaries 00:06:32.78\00:06:34.83 who meet people who are thinking biblically. 00:06:34.86\00:06:36.67 Everything we do needs to be grounded on the Bible. 00:06:36.70\00:06:40.44 Thirdly, we need to a be reasoning missiologically 00:06:40.47\00:06:43.55 that is as a missionary as- 00:06:43.58\00:06:45.82 that's kind of the anthropological 00:06:45.85\00:06:47.86 look at these people in these contexts. 00:06:47.89\00:06:49.91 How do we, how do we meet them? 00:06:49.94\00:06:51.90 Fourthly, we need to be people who are living holistically. 00:06:51.93\00:06:55.34 In our family life, our interpersonal relationships, 00:06:55.37\00:06:58.95 our physical health and so on holistic people. 00:06:58.98\00:07:02.24 And lastly of course, the whole goal of this is 00:07:02.27\00:07:05.40 that we will be serving incarnationally, 00:07:05.43\00:07:07.99 serving as Jesus served. 00:07:08.02\00:07:10.91 Sure, sometime people are concerned when we talk 00:07:10.94\00:07:13.60 about how we have to adapt 00:07:13.63\00:07:15.72 the message in different circumstances. 00:07:15.75\00:07:17.72 I think we're talking about compromise et cetera, et cetera 00:07:17.75\00:07:20.25 which would not what is the danger of 00:07:20.28\00:07:22.73 not doing this of just going 00:07:22.76\00:07:24.73 and preaching like we would here somewhere else? 00:07:24.76\00:07:27.90 Well, people will understand what we say 00:07:27.93\00:07:30.90 from their own context and culture 00:07:30.93\00:07:33.59 and as anybody who has talked 00:07:33.62\00:07:35.57 to somebody in a different language group 00:07:35.60\00:07:37.25 or in a different culture you- 00:07:37.28\00:07:39.24 just even sometimes in our own culture 00:07:39.27\00:07:41.11 we know how easy it is to miss-communicate 00:07:41.14\00:07:43.83 and people take it given their own frame of references 00:07:43.86\00:07:47.47 and their own understanding. 00:07:47.50\00:07:48.89 So unless we're willing to learn 00:07:48.92\00:07:51.39 their frame of reference unless we're learn willing 00:07:51.42\00:07:54.17 to take the time to understand 00:07:54.20\00:07:56.15 what they're actually hearing 00:07:56.18\00:07:58.89 we may be giving a completely wrong message to them. 00:07:58.92\00:08:02.46 We may actually not be giving the gospel. 00:08:02.49\00:08:05.33 Can you give me an example? 00:08:05.36\00:08:07.17 Oh, well, there are many of course, 00:08:07.20\00:08:10.07 I suspect you could give an example from 00:08:10.10\00:08:12.16 even discussions with your wife, right 00:08:12.19\00:08:14.25 as where the miscommunication happens 00:08:14.28\00:08:15.97 but in the sense of witnessing there's a very 00:08:16.00\00:08:21.16 interesting example and hymnology in Thailand. 00:08:21.19\00:08:25.08 Thai is a- has a tonal language 00:08:25.11\00:08:27.97 so that a word can be mean completely different things 00:08:28.00\00:08:31.94 depending on whether it's a rising tone or falling tone. 00:08:31.97\00:08:35.41 And when English hymns are translated into Thai 00:08:35.44\00:08:39.24 and just sung with English tunes 00:08:39.27\00:08:41.77 you can actually be singing the song near, 00:08:41.80\00:08:44.66 still near for example is actually 00:08:44.69\00:08:46.78 the way the tune make its go is farther still farther. Okay. 00:08:46.81\00:08:49.91 So somebody walking by and here's an Adventist singing 00:08:49.94\00:08:52.32 that is hearing the completely wrong message. 00:08:52.35\00:08:55.62 It has a min contextualized for that contact. 00:08:55.65\00:08:58.21 Yeah. So you have so many people coming in for training, 00:08:58.24\00:09:04.14 do you have people who come in kind of skeptical 00:09:04.17\00:09:06.59 why am I here or you know three weeks 00:09:06.62\00:09:09.26 I have to go through and then they have a light bulb 00:09:09.29\00:09:11.61 movement where they see what it all means. 00:09:11.64\00:09:13.55 Can you tell me about that? 00:09:13.58\00:09:15.18 Yeah, we- not in frequently 00:09:15.21\00:09:17.06 we have people who come wondering why they have 00:09:17.09\00:09:19.46 to take three weeks out of a very busy schedule 00:09:19.49\00:09:21.80 because I tend to tell them, you know, 00:09:21.83\00:09:24.13 where else in the church are you given 00:09:24.16\00:09:26.27 the opportunity to spend three weeks 00:09:26.30\00:09:28.45 thinking about the path God's called you to. 00:09:28.48\00:09:30.84 Really having a chance to study 00:09:30.87\00:09:33.41 and fellowship with other people 00:09:33.44\00:09:36.05 who are also being called into that paths, 00:09:36.08\00:09:38.08 building the kind of relationships in the training 00:09:38.11\00:09:40.88 that we hope they can build outside 00:09:40.91\00:09:42.33 because we have- like this last one we just had 00:09:42.36\00:09:45.71 eight families from seven different countries, you know. 00:09:45.74\00:09:49.06 So a very international group that comes together 00:09:49.09\00:09:52.62 and spends the time talking through 00:09:52.65\00:09:55.34 the issues so that in the class are actually practicing 00:09:55.37\00:09:58.69 some other skills that am that they will need later on. 00:09:58.72\00:10:03.80 But the aha moments come at different places 00:10:03.83\00:10:05.99 for different people. 00:10:06.02\00:10:07.42 I remember one a long serving missionary 00:10:07.45\00:10:10.56 who was coming for the second time Mission Institute 00:10:10.59\00:10:14.20 and we got to the point part of cross-cultural conflict 00:10:14.23\00:10:17.96 and we're talking about the different types, ways 00:10:17.99\00:10:20.06 that people handle conflict 00:10:20.09\00:10:22.12 based on different cultural norms. 00:10:22.15\00:10:24.46 And he suddenly put his head in his hands 00:10:24.49\00:10:27.91 and started shaking his head and I said you want 00:10:27.94\00:10:29.88 to add something to this 00:10:29.91\00:10:31.43 and he said, you know, he said I have been doing- 00:10:31.46\00:10:33.86 I come from a indirect culture but I've been yelling 00:10:33.89\00:10:38.61 at the people in the culture I'm at. 00:10:38.64\00:10:40.63 You know, he said I just so frustrated 00:10:40.66\00:10:42.69 between all the cultural, you know, constraints 00:10:42.72\00:10:47.06 and the feeling of overwork and so on. 00:10:47.09\00:10:50.09 He had been- he got into a yelling mode 00:10:50.12\00:10:51.89 in an indirect culture. 00:10:51.92\00:10:53.03 He just realized and so we got an email afterward 00:10:53.06\00:10:56.28 saying I've quit trying to change them 00:10:56.31\00:10:59.43 and guess what, my stress level is so much lower. 00:10:59.46\00:11:02.11 Isn't that interesting? 00:11:02.14\00:11:03.17 Yeah, so that sort of thing we hear frequently. 00:11:03.20\00:11:05.52 Yeah. Cheryl, thank you so much 00:11:05.55\00:11:07.07 for joining us today and for sharing 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.08 some of the excitement of what happens 00:11:09.11\00:11:10.74 in the Institute of World Mission. 00:11:10.77\00:11:11.96 Yes, it's a wonderful thing. 00:11:11.99\00:11:13.18 If you get a chance to come you're welcome. 00:11:13.21\00:11:15.11 Thank you so much. 00:11:15.14\00:11:17.35 Viewers at home, please remember 00:11:17.38\00:11:19.27 the Institute of World Mission as they train missionaries 00:11:19.30\00:11:22.20 to go all around the world 00:11:22.23\00:11:24.51 and also please remember Global Mission pioneers 00:11:24.54\00:11:28.11 who are planting new churches in new areas. 00:11:28.14\00:11:31.43 And we have a free offer for you. 00:11:31.46\00:11:33.45 It is called the Global Mission Pioneer 00:11:33.48\00:11:35.94 Stories DVD with much more on it. 00:11:35.97\00:11:38.62 Full of wonderful heartwarming 00:11:38.65\00:11:40.63 encouraging stories about Global Mission. 00:11:40.66\00:11:43.32 And so if you would like to receive this DVD 00:11:43.35\00:11:46.43 and you live in North America 00:11:46.46\00:11:47.60 the details are there on the screen. 00:11:47.63\00:11:50.86 We will be right back after this short message. 00:11:50.89\00:11:53.39
