On today's program Adventist schools in India 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.40 helping children prepare for a better future 00:00:03.43\00:00:06.06 and Global Mission Pioneers 00:00:06.09\00:00:07.66 in the African nation of Botswana 00:00:07.69\00:00:10.07 all that and much more coming up next 00:00:10.10\00:00:12.38 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:12.41\00:00:14.11 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:25.80\00:00:28.43 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:28.46\00:00:31.42 He gave us a mission. 00:00:31.45\00:00:34.06 Jesus said, go. 00:00:34.09\00:00:36.50 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:36.53\00:00:41.47 This is our mission. 00:00:41.50\00:00:43.35 This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:43.38\00:00:45.94 Hello, I'm Gary Krause 00:00:51.43\00:00:52.59 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:52.62\00:00:54.81 a program where we look at what's happening 00:00:54.84\00:00:56.96 with Adventist Mission here and around the world. 00:00:56.99\00:01:00.62 In recent years the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:00.65\00:01:03.26 has increasingly focused on Mission to the Cities. 00:01:03.29\00:01:06.92 According to the Global Health Observatory 00:01:06.95\00:01:09.92 a hundred years ago 00:01:09.95\00:01:11.03 two out of every ten people lived in urban areas. 00:01:11.06\00:01:15.23 Today it's more than five out of ten 00:01:15.26\00:01:17.22 and in a few years 00:01:17.25\00:01:18.56 the vast majority of human beings 00:01:18.59\00:01:21.01 will be living in cities. 00:01:21.04\00:01:23.54 Today, we'll be talking with doctor Gaspar Colon 00:01:23.57\00:01:26.07 from Washington Adventist University 00:01:26.10\00:01:28.66 and the Center from Metropolitan Ministry. 00:01:28.69\00:01:31.17 We will also be talking with Wes Via 00:01:31.20\00:01:33.28 who was leading Simplicity 00:01:33.31\00:01:35.13 an urban outreach project in Allentown, Pennsylvania. 00:01:35.16\00:01:39.50 Before we meet our guests 00:01:39.53\00:01:41.17 several years ago the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:41.20\00:01:43.81 chose several major cities 00:01:43.84\00:01:45.96 for special prayer and holistic outreach. 00:01:45.99\00:01:49.28 Let's join Gerson Santos 00:01:49.31\00:01:52.43 who is the Director of the Global Mission Urban Center 00:01:52.46\00:01:54.62 as he introduces us to some of those cities. 00:01:54.65\00:01:57.84 Mission to the Cities, 00:02:03.36\00:02:04.80 this is probably the most important initiative 00:02:04.83\00:02:07.62 that Seventh-day Adventist Church ever had. 00:02:07.65\00:02:10.68 About 200 years ago 00:02:10.71\00:02:12.10 just three percent of the world population 00:02:12.13\00:02:14.12 was living in the cities 00:02:14.15\00:02:15.30 now we have more than half 00:02:15.33\00:02:17.11 of the people in the world living in the urban area. 00:02:17.14\00:02:20.37 In a couple of decades 00:02:20.40\00:02:21.68 we're gonna have three quarters 00:02:21.71\00:02:23.01 of the whole population of the world 00:02:23.04\00:02:24.50 live in those major cities. 00:02:24.53\00:02:27.31 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:02:27.34\00:02:29.53 decided to reach out to those urban areas. 00:02:29.56\00:02:32.96 In each division around the world 00:02:32.99\00:02:35.38 one city was selected 00:02:35.41\00:02:37.70 and all over the world we have about 600 major cities 00:02:37.73\00:02:41.65 that will be reaching in a couple of years. 00:02:41.68\00:02:43.50 Let's see some of those 00:02:43.53\00:02:45.64 most challenging cities around the world. 00:02:45.67\00:02:48.15 One of the Mission to the Cities 00:02:59.89\00:03:01.59 urban areas is Lagos, Nigeria. 00:03:01.62\00:03:04.39 A port city, Lagos is located 00:03:04.42\00:03:06.49 on the southern coast of Nigeria, 00:03:06.52\00:03:08.75 the largest city in the country 00:03:08.78\00:03:10.51 and one of the largest on the continent of Africa. 00:03:10.54\00:03:13.84 Lagos has an estimated population of 13 million people. 00:03:13.87\00:03:18.44 The economic success of the city 00:03:18.47\00:03:20.62 is attracting more people all the time 00:03:20.65\00:03:23.50 and Lagos continues to grow rapidly. 00:03:23.53\00:03:26.67 Some place the population as high as 21 million 00:03:26.70\00:03:30.42 yet here in one of the largest urban areas of the world, 00:03:30.45\00:03:34.90 there are just about 00:03:34.93\00:03:36.12 100 Adventist churches in the city 00:03:36.15\00:03:39.76 and only about 12,000 Adventist believers. 00:03:39.79\00:03:43.27 We know that God is here 00:03:43.30\00:03:45.68 and God will give us the means 00:03:45.71\00:03:47.77 and the ways and the courage, and the wisdom 00:03:47.80\00:03:51.01 about how to come about the whole program. 00:03:51.04\00:03:54.91 And we are sure 00:03:54.94\00:03:56.56 that by the end of this year and the years after, 00:03:56.59\00:04:01.07 we will witness some miracles in this city 00:04:01.10\00:04:04.40 because we want Lagos to be won for Christ Jesus. 00:04:04.43\00:04:09.39 Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, 00:04:17.14\00:04:20.22 is also its largest city. 00:04:20.25\00:04:22.80 Founded in the 9th century, 00:04:22.83\00:04:24.64 today Prague is a mix of modern and historical. 00:04:24.67\00:04:28.46 Although there are more than 1.4 million 00:04:28.49\00:04:31.58 inhabitants in this city, 00:04:31.61\00:04:33.51 you will find less than 00:04:33.54\00:04:34.97 10 Seventh-day Adventist churches 00:04:35.00\00:04:37.22 and only about 700 Adventist members, 00:04:37.25\00:04:40.24 that's a fraction of one percent. 00:04:40.27\00:04:45.11 One of the challenges for the church 00:04:45.14\00:04:46.71 is to create a strategy 00:04:46.74\00:04:48.02 of evangelistic work in the cities, 00:04:48.05\00:04:50.42 which will focus on the context in which people live, 00:04:50.45\00:04:53.47 where their needs are, where their injuries are, 00:04:53.50\00:04:56.00 and where they need help. 00:04:56.03\00:04:59.17 Let's go across the ocean 00:04:59.20\00:05:01.06 and look to another challenging urban area. 00:05:01.09\00:05:04.61 Built on the ruins of an Aztec city 00:05:07.86\00:05:10.19 and what was once a lake, 00:05:10.22\00:05:11.71 Mexico City has grown rapidly 00:05:11.74\00:05:13.94 and it's said that the city's population doubled 00:05:13.97\00:05:17.06 between 1930 and 1950. 00:05:17.09\00:05:19.98 Today, Mexico City is one of the world's largest cities 00:05:20.01\00:05:24.04 with a greater metro population of 23.6 million people. 00:05:24.07\00:05:29.55 There are nearly 54,000 Seventh-day Adventists 00:05:29.58\00:05:33.10 and more than 200 churches, 00:05:33.13\00:05:35.22 that's still less than a quarter 00:05:35.25\00:05:37.09 of one percent of the population. 00:05:37.12\00:05:39.02 The city of Kinshasa is the capital 00:05:46.16\00:05:48.25 of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 00:05:48.28\00:05:51.02 Here Adventists are using unique ways 00:05:51.05\00:05:54.11 such as street music to reach people in their community. 00:05:54.14\00:05:59.00 Kinshasa has a population 00:05:59.03\00:06:00.48 that is approaching 10 million people. 00:06:00.51\00:06:03.99 There are about 8,000 Adventists 00:06:04.02\00:06:06.49 and nearly 70 churches less than 0.1 percent. 00:06:06.52\00:06:13.32 My guest is Dr. Gaspar Colon 00:06:13.35\00:06:15.51 from Washington Adventist University. 00:06:15.54\00:06:18.06 Dr. Colon is also the Director 00:06:18.09\00:06:20.12 of the Center for Metropolitan Ministry. 00:06:20.15\00:06:22.49 Welcome, Gaspar. 00:06:22.52\00:06:23.57 I'm glad to be here. 00:06:23.60\00:06:24.64 I'm glad you're here because Mission to the Cities 00:06:24.67\00:06:28.06 is such an important mission challenge 00:06:28.09\00:06:30.27 that we're facing today 00:06:30.30\00:06:31.33 I know it's been a passion of yours for many years. 00:06:31.36\00:06:33.76 How did that start? 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.51 Actually it is something 00:06:35.54\00:06:37.07 which starts with experiencing something 00:06:37.10\00:06:41.57 and then later as the years go by 00:06:41.60\00:06:44.56 learning about it from books 00:06:44.59\00:06:47.03 and other people who have experienced it also. 00:06:47.06\00:06:50.62 Back in 1971, when I was just one year 00:06:50.65\00:06:54.75 from graduating from college 00:06:54.78\00:06:56.85 I had met a young lady 00:06:56.88\00:06:58.68 and we were had courted and we were engaged in 00:06:58.71\00:07:02.36 and we were called as a collegiate task force couple 00:07:02.39\00:07:07.79 to work in Times Square in New York City. 00:07:07.82\00:07:11.45 And so we went to the New York Centre 00:07:11.48\00:07:14.69 which was right there on 46th Street 00:07:14.72\00:07:17.52 in The Times Square area in the Theater District. 00:07:17.55\00:07:20.70 And we were tasked with meeting the needs of community 00:07:20.73\00:07:26.14 that is right there 00:07:26.17\00:07:27.68 in Times Square residential community. 00:07:27.71\00:07:30.48 And so we did everything 00:07:30.51\00:07:32.91 that we could to get acquainted with the area. 00:07:32.94\00:07:36.28 We decided that we would provide them 00:07:36.31\00:07:41.64 with some of the programs that we that- 00:07:41.67\00:07:44.51 that were very popular at the time. 00:07:44.54\00:07:46.24 Stop smoking clinics, weight control programs 00:07:46.27\00:07:49.19 and things of that nature. 00:07:49.22\00:07:50.93 And so we talked to a few people 00:07:50.96\00:07:54.83 but we had already decided what we wanted to do. 00:07:54.86\00:07:58.25 And so we printed up fliers, 00:07:58.28\00:08:02.70 we went into the residential community, 00:08:02.73\00:08:05.87 we hand these out we put them on store windows 00:08:05.90\00:08:10.88 and eagerly anticipating large crowds of people 00:08:10.91\00:08:15.34 to come and to nobody came. 00:08:15.37\00:08:19.25 And we- and we were just surprised 00:08:19.28\00:08:22.64 because we had talked to so many people. 00:08:22.67\00:08:24.58 Said yes, I would come but nobody came. 00:08:24.61\00:08:28.42 And there's as we began to analyze this 00:08:28.45\00:08:31.74 we figured well we better go back 00:08:31.77\00:08:33.64 in the community and discover from the people 00:08:33.67\00:08:36.22 why they weren't coming. 00:08:36.25\00:08:37.71 I mean where we were was only half a block 00:08:37.74\00:08:40.22 away from 8th Avenue and the residential community 00:08:40.25\00:08:43.69 was on the other side of 8th Avenue. 00:08:43.72\00:08:45.80 They wouldn't walk across and into the Theater District. 00:08:45.83\00:08:51.63 And when we asked they said we don't go there. 00:08:51.66\00:08:56.24 And we said but it's just I mean we can see it from here, 00:08:56.27\00:08:59.93 we don't go there. 00:08:59.96\00:09:01.85 And as we look that what we were doing 00:09:01.88\00:09:07.39 we figured we're not going to be 00:09:07.42\00:09:09.16 able to reach these people from that section of town 00:09:09.19\00:09:13.19 we have to move in to the community. 00:09:13.22\00:09:15.60 And so we relocated the ministry 00:09:15.63\00:09:18.56 by looking for and finding a place 00:09:18.59\00:09:22.00 where we could do the work 00:09:22.03\00:09:24.20 that we were called to do. 00:09:24.23\00:09:25.76 So they were basically saying that's an area 00:09:25.79\00:09:27.49 the tourist may go to but it's not for us. 00:09:27.52\00:09:29.80 That's right, there no grocery stores there, 00:09:29.83\00:09:32.18 it's all first foods and high-class restaurants 00:09:32.21\00:09:36.41 and theaters and we have nothing to do there. 00:09:36.44\00:09:40.66 So this is something that I heard you emphasize 00:09:40.69\00:09:42.76 many, many times that you have to understand the community 00:09:42.79\00:09:45.92 because it has its own rhythms, 00:09:45.95\00:09:47.49 it has its own ways of doing things. 00:09:47.52\00:09:48.68 That's right. 00:09:48.71\00:09:49.74 And too often we think 00:09:49.77\00:09:51.33 we know what they need and we bring it in, right. 00:09:51.36\00:09:53.03 That's right. 00:09:53.06\00:09:54.09 So what did you do, you obviously started a- 00:09:54.12\00:09:56.96 you moved across to the right place 00:09:56.99\00:09:58.29 and then what did you do? 00:09:58.32\00:09:59.39 Well, what we did is we looked around 00:09:59.42\00:10:01.64 we found to this storefront 00:10:01.67\00:10:04.68 between a former church that we later found out 00:10:04.71\00:10:08.51 was a discotheque and a Chinese laundry 00:10:08.54\00:10:12.49 and it was maybe nine or ten feet wide 00:10:12.52\00:10:15.45 and 30 feet deep. 00:10:15.48\00:10:17.36 And it was- it was sufficiently. 00:10:17.39\00:10:20.30 We carpeted it and we wanted to set it up 00:10:20.33\00:10:24.11 at the same time while we were doing that 00:10:24.14\00:10:26.19 we were visiting the school's 00:10:26.22\00:10:28.14 and offering the health teachers 00:10:28.17\00:10:31.13 and the science teachers to help the kids understand 00:10:31.16\00:10:36.64 about smoking and health issues and drugs. 00:10:36.67\00:10:41.35 And so we came in with little talks 00:10:41.38\00:10:46.17 for the third, fourth, fifth graders 00:10:46.20\00:10:48.53 and then in the middle school also we went in, 00:10:48.56\00:10:52.60 they used to be called junior high schools 00:10:52.63\00:10:54.61 back then in New York City. 00:10:54.64\00:10:56.99 And we got acquainted with all the children in the community 00:10:57.02\00:11:00.22 who were going to school in that, in that area. 00:11:00.25\00:11:03.16 That opened the way for us to get to know the parents 00:11:03.19\00:11:06.12 because as we went around visiting the neighborhood 00:11:06.15\00:11:10.35 and talking to people it- 00:11:10.38\00:11:12.70 it just began to become very family like 00:11:12.73\00:11:17.19 and we were very much in tune 00:11:17.22\00:11:20.75 with what was happening in that community. 00:11:20.78\00:11:23.66 Then of course we wanted to kickoff 00:11:23.69\00:11:26.67 the inauguration of our community center. 00:11:26.70\00:11:31.22 And we needed to put up a sign 00:11:31.25\00:11:33.89 and in those days a bubble letters were in 00:11:33.92\00:11:39.43 and so we got this thick Styrofoam 00:11:39.46\00:11:42.20 and we were going to do the shaping of the letters, 00:11:42.23\00:11:46.50 "the opened door" and so- 00:11:46.53\00:11:51.00 but we didn't want to do it inside of the center, 00:11:51.03\00:11:55.32 so we figured would go down to a playground 00:11:55.35\00:11:58.59 down the street and get that done. 00:11:58.62\00:12:01.40 And as we did that there were some kids 00:12:01.43\00:12:04.67 that were playing basketball 00:12:04.70\00:12:06.49 and one of them came over and said what are you doing? 00:12:06.52\00:12:08.95 And we say well we're putting together a sign 00:12:08.98\00:12:13.40 for a community center down the street. 00:12:13.43\00:12:15.89 And he said well, can I help? 00:12:15.92\00:12:18.75 And so he started helping and we gave them the tools 00:12:18.78\00:12:21.62 and his starter shaping the letter 00:12:21.65\00:12:23.81 and one of his friends came. 00:12:23.84\00:12:26.43 And when his friend asked he said 00:12:26.46\00:12:30.26 well we're, we're building a sign 00:12:30.29\00:12:32.29 for our new community center down street. 00:12:32.32\00:12:36.22 And so immediately it just seems like 00:12:36.25\00:12:40.16 they were wanting this so much 00:12:40.19\00:12:42.40 this became their project busy place in town 00:12:50.79\00:12:54.59 because they were feeling that they owned this place 00:12:54.62\00:13:00.04 as a place where they could come after school hang out, 00:13:00.07\00:13:04.43 do things and have their parents 00:13:04.46\00:13:07.35 involved also in programs. 00:13:07.38\00:13:09.67 Fantastic. 00:13:09.70\00:13:11.12 Thank you Gaspar, for reminding us
