country in Western Africa,

small villages
are often connected

by only rivers and lakes.

Here, local people
earned a living by fishing

and selling goods to
others in their community.

For the Adventist
Church, these rural communities

are not a stumbling
block to spreading the gospel.

Instead, a Global
Mission pioneer has taken

it as a personal
challenge to reach

as many people as possible
in this aquatic wilderness.

in this area for 12 years.

In that time, he's
raised up three church groups

Despite the
challenges of this environment,

the church here has grown.

With the leading
of the Holy Spirit,

Francis has been able to spread

the message of Jesus' love

rejected Christianity.

birth place of Voodoo,

and the majority of people
here are spirit worshipers.

Yet in the middle of
these small villages,

able to reach out

to people looking
for a new way of life.

My greatest challenge is to tell
the people here of the gospel

and then to help provide them
with a place to worship God.

And today that is
still a prevailing view

in the country,

is that the great-- It still is.

In fact, a lot of the
people that I talked to told me

that they had been
dedicated to Voodoo as babies.

So kind of like where
were dedicate children to God,

these children
were dedicated to Voodoo
00:05:10.06\00:05:11.94
and they carried out with them.
00:05:11.97\00:05:14.04
But we have a
Seventh-day Adventist presence
00:05:14.07\00:05:16.04
in their country with
school, a school I guess and--
00:05:16.07\00:05:20.32
Well, not a school yet.
00:05:20.35\00:05:21.66
Okay, we will come back to
that another time. All right.

Okay. But we have churches.

We do have churches.

And you visited a unique
church which is a River Church.

Tell me about that experience.

Well, I first saw a video
clip of this several years ago

and I was so impressed with it.

Because all of these
homes are along the river

and they have two
rainy seasons each year.

So every time it
rains, the entire area floods

and people will have
to boat to their neighbors
00:05:45.91\00:05:47.80
or they'll swim over
across what used to be a road.
00:05:47.83\00:05:51.00
So all of these
homes, shops, whatever

and churches are
right along the river.

And we had a
chance to see the one
00:05:58.22\00:06:00.27
that I had seen
several years ago.

Now that church
was falling was apart

and today it's
not even habitable.

Is that right?
Because of the weather?

The weather eats at it.

And it was a very simple
church just built on stilts.

A Global Mission
pioneer had gone to that area

and started a new congregation.

They worshipped there,

but as the elements
tore away at the structure,

it was no longer
able to be in use at all.

It's standing, but that's it.

We can't climb up the
ladder to get into it at all.

So how did you get there?

these are not trained pastors.

They are lay people
who on a very small living

start putting just
working among their

own people to
plant a church. Yes.

Did you meet any
of the church members?

The church
members were terrific.

they visited two small churches

during a week, would gather

would sing a welcome...

Did the pioneers

Well, some of them just
started by becoming friends

useful, helping with repairs,

helping in the fields,
helping with transportation.

They would take a boat

and pick up
people and drop them off.

Simple things like that

where they could get
acquainted with people.

And in some cases,
they just offered to do

some sort of
class is that might be

a literacy classes for adults.

and then they make friends

and lead people to Jesus.

lot of committees,

you participate
in many meetings,

we run so many institutions
and organizations and entities.

How do you keep mission central?

I mean, it must be
easy to be distracted with,

but just keeping things
going, right? Absolutely.

You can get into an
administrative bureaucratic rut

and you just travel down
the same road you always have,

trying to take care of problems
00:13:24.51\00:13:26.09
and making sure that you know

at least people
aren't shaken up too much.

And yet, it must
always be a priority

what is this institution,
what is this committee,

what is this
action gonna do to further

the mission that the Lord
has entrusted into our hands?

And that really is
the most important thing

that any of us can be part of.

And really, it's
one of those things

you just have to
keep reminding yourself.

And that we need to warn people

about what's coming ahead,

but the warning is
really a happy warning.

That God has put into
place everything we need,

the statuary service
itself tells us all about

how Jesus has made an
opportunity for us to be

eternally with Him.

And that's really the
wonderful message that we have

and that's why that has
to be the spiritual focus

of any
institution, any committee,

any initiative that we do.

When you travel in
different parts of the world?

I see a lot of things.

And believe me, I
traveled a lot there,

But I think
what is most exciting

is to see church members

who have caught the vision
of who we are as a people.

Why God has called the
Seventh-day Adventist Church?

And it then is--

It's translated
into compassionate

and loving
action to help people.

Jesus spent more time healing

and teaching
than He did preaching.

In other words, there
must be something about

what we do that
actually speaks louder

than what we actually profess
although it has to match.

But in reality, one
of the things that are

so exciting is to see
how people are grasping

understanding that we're living

in the last days
of Earth's history.

That truly Jesus is coming soon.

Prophetic interpretation
has come to the point

where we have no
more time prophecy.

And we know that the
Lord's coming is very soon.

So that gives us an urgency.

And when I see
especially young people,

getting so excited
about their activities

and what they are able to
do within the church setting

that I think is one of
the most rewarding things,

where young people
are just so in thrilled

with being able to do
something in a practical way

to help people and to take
the word of God and share it.

So really, it gets down to
some very simple basic things

They're in their
early '20s, mid '20s,

young people who are
very bright and creative.

And it's with the idea
of having a large group

of young people
being able to give one year

in service to their local
conference or local field,

maybe to a larger area

and in some cases even
outside of their division,

but most of it
within their own area.

Giving Bible
studies, doing community work,

helping people,

group, this pilot group

dynamic way on the ground

We have the opportunity
