On today's program, a Seventh-day Adventist School 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.80 in Dakar, Senegal, 00:00:03.83\00:00:05.83 the global center for Adventist-Muslim Relations 00:00:05.86\00:00:08.53 and a church plant in china. 00:00:08.56\00:00:11.12 All that and more coming up next 00:00:11.15\00:00:13.12 right here on "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:13.15\00:00:16.25 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:26.22\00:00:28.49 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:28.52\00:00:31.63 He gave us a mission. 00:00:31.66\00:00:34.51 Jesus said, "Go. 00:00:34.54\00:00:36.71 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:36.74\00:00:41.78 This is our mission. 00:00:41.81\00:00:43.88 This is our Global Mission." 00:00:43.91\00:00:46.41 Hello, I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:51.94\00:00:53.01 And welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:53.04\00:00:55.83 Most of us naturally tend to get along best with people 00:00:55.86\00:00:58.56 who are like us, share our view of the world 00:00:58.59\00:01:01.57 and think like us. 00:01:01.60\00:01:03.45 It's easy to talk about snow, 00:01:03.48\00:01:05.03 to people who have seen snow, 00:01:05.06\00:01:06.75 but how do you explain that fluffy frozen white stuff 00:01:06.78\00:01:10.01 to someone from the tropics? 00:01:10.04\00:01:12.00 That's a simple illustration of the type of challenge 00:01:12.03\00:01:14.76 the Global Mission Centers face as they work to help us 00:01:14.79\00:01:18.46 build better bridges of understanding 00:01:18.49\00:01:20.63 and witness to people 00:01:20.66\00:01:22.23 from different religious backgrounds and worldviews. 00:01:22.26\00:01:26.32 Today, we'll be talking with Dr. Lester Merklin, 00:01:26.35\00:01:28.71 Director of the Center for Adventist-Muslim Relations. 00:01:28.74\00:01:32.58 We'll also visit Africa and China, 00:01:32.61\00:01:34.62 but first up, let's visit Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific. 00:01:34.65\00:01:39.19 On this early morning, 00:01:41.53\00:01:43.28 a mission pilot warms up his plane. 00:01:43.31\00:01:46.03 He is preparing for the day. 00:01:46.06\00:01:48.55 As he flies over some of the most remote jungles 00:01:48.58\00:01:50.86 of Papua New Guinea, 00:01:50.89\00:01:52.34 he praise for the great need in this region. 00:01:52.37\00:01:54.92 The people here are in need of medical attention. 00:01:57.98\00:02:01.20 As the pilot approaches the village, 00:02:01.23\00:02:02.95 he knows that God is working here. 00:02:02.98\00:02:05.07 In Mangino Village, the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:02:05.10\00:02:07.61 has set up a small medical clinic. 00:02:07.64\00:02:10.23 This clinic offers the people in the village medical attention. 00:02:10.26\00:02:13.86 The people here constantly 00:02:13.89\00:02:15.29 struggle with such things as malaria, 00:02:15.32\00:02:17.65 broken bones, the flu and pregnancies. 00:02:17.68\00:02:21.03 For a majority of these people, 00:02:21.06\00:02:22.42 this is the only access to medical care 00:02:22.45\00:02:24.37 that they will ever have. 00:02:24.40\00:02:26.34 You can begin to see the importance of this service. 00:02:26.37\00:02:29.85 People travel great distances on foot 00:02:35.34\00:02:37.52 from other villages to the Mangino Clinic. 00:02:37.55\00:02:40.48 Roy Lolly walked here with his parents 00:02:40.51\00:02:42.08 from another village. 00:02:42.11\00:02:43.60 They came in search of treatment 00:02:43.63\00:02:44.85 for his mother who is not feeling well. 00:02:44.88\00:02:47.13 After trekking for hours through the jungle to get here, 00:02:47.16\00:02:50.20 this family is very appreciative by the work being done 00:02:50.23\00:02:53.24 and hopes for a clinic in their village some day. 00:02:53.27\00:02:56.64 We have privilege to have SDA mission to come up here 00:02:56.67\00:03:01.93 and set this hospital 00:03:01.96\00:03:04.81 so that all the people look at that around the bush, 00:03:04.84\00:03:08.32 places like here. 00:03:08.35\00:03:10.53 And we justly come in 00:03:10.56\00:03:13.13 and take the medicine here, church medicine. 00:03:13.16\00:03:17.57 As the mission pilot prepared to leave, 00:03:18.90\00:03:21.09 he sees first hand the work the God is doing here. 00:03:21.12\00:03:24.61 These clinics are an opportunity 00:03:24.64\00:03:26.07 for the people in the village to see Jesus. 00:03:26.10\00:03:29.19 The work here is plentiful 00:03:29.22\00:03:30.25 and the Mangino Clinic struggles to tend to the high demand 00:03:30.28\00:03:33.15 of those seeking medical attention. 00:03:33.18\00:03:35.72 The Mangino Clinic is just one example of the clinics 00:03:35.75\00:03:38.49 throughout the South Pacific region. 00:03:38.52\00:03:40.91 Other clinics in Papua New Guinea 00:03:40.94\00:03:42.45 in the small island of Tanna 00:03:42.48\00:03:44.14 face the same challenge everyday. 00:03:44.17\00:03:47.09 As you can see, this is a big challenge here. 00:03:47.12\00:03:50.99 This quarter, a portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering 00:03:51.02\00:03:54.32 will go to help build remote medical clinics 00:03:54.35\00:03:56.66 in areas where people are in great need. 00:03:56.69\00:03:59.85 These clinics will help hundreds of people 00:03:59.88\00:04:01.58 throughout the South Pacific region. 00:04:01.61\00:04:04.01 Please, pray for the work being done here. 00:04:04.04\00:04:06.62 And thank you for your support of mission. 00:04:06.65\00:04:09.60 It's my pleasure to welcome my friend and colleague, 00:04:18.91\00:04:21.12 Dr. Lester Merklin who heads up 00:04:21.15\00:04:23.29 the Global Center for Adventist-Muslim Relations. 00:04:23.32\00:04:26.91 Lester, thank you so much for joining us. 00:04:26.94\00:04:29.01 Adventist-Muslim Relations, 00:04:29.04\00:04:31.10 why do we need a center for this? 00:04:31.13\00:04:35.22 Actually, I would say that 00:04:35.25\00:04:37.29 this center maybe is even more important 00:04:37.32\00:04:39.53 than the other centers 00:04:39.56\00:04:40.69 in the sense that the Muslim world is well-known, 00:04:40.72\00:04:46.55 and a lot of times misunderstood by people 00:04:46.58\00:04:49.33 because of some on the things that are happening 00:04:49.36\00:04:52.31 in our current history. 00:04:52.34\00:04:54.06 Yeah, and from the media. Right. 00:04:54.09\00:04:56.12 And so people are a little afraid, 00:04:56.15\00:04:59.02 if they don't know a Muslim, 00:04:59.05\00:05:02.29 they may seem to be a different culture, 00:05:02.32\00:05:05.41 they may be in their own neighborhoods 00:05:05.44\00:05:07.53 and people don't know quite what to do. 00:05:07.56\00:05:10.24 So I think the center is very important 00:05:10.27\00:05:11.97 to help Adventist's realize. 00:05:12.00\00:05:13.44 Hey, these are people. 00:05:13.47\00:05:14.84 These are-- In most cases, spiritual people. 00:05:14.87\00:05:18.74 Now, Lester, I remember reading a study, 00:05:18.77\00:05:22.47 an academic study that was done a few years ago 00:05:22.50\00:05:25.31 in North America and Europe saying that, 00:05:25.34\00:05:27.91 most Muslims say, I don't even know one Christian. 00:05:27.94\00:05:32.31 Is this your experience, too? 00:05:32.34\00:05:35.47 Actually, yes and no. 00:05:35.50\00:05:37.42 And the reason I say that is 00:05:37.45\00:05:38.78 because interestingly which I find good 00:05:38.81\00:05:42.28 that more Muslims in America say that they-- 00:05:42.31\00:05:47.41 I mean, more Mus-- 00:05:47.44\00:05:48.47 Yeah, more Muslims in America say they know a Christian 00:05:48.50\00:05:51.05 than do Hindus and Buddhists. 00:05:51.08\00:05:53.88 Only about a third of the Muslims say they don't. 00:05:53.91\00:05:55.91 So that's good. Okay. 00:05:55.94\00:05:57.94 Now hopefully they know the right Christians 00:05:57.97\00:06:00.34 that are living a faith and are spiritual people. Yeah. 00:06:00.37\00:06:04.47 Now, do you see within the Christian church 00:06:04.50\00:06:07.53 that the strong prejudice against Muslims? 00:06:07.56\00:06:09.93 How do you see? 00:06:09.96\00:06:11.37 How do you see the situation? 00:06:11.40\00:06:13.13 There's no doubt here. 00:06:13.16\00:06:15.60 And it just tears my heart as I look at some of the news, 00:06:15.63\00:06:21.48 blogs on the internet and then see people's comments. 00:06:21.51\00:06:25.62 I wonder where they get that kind of spirit. 00:06:25.65\00:06:28.41 But as I go around the world, 00:06:28.44\00:06:30.19 as I talk with Adventist, as I am in churches, 00:06:30.22\00:06:34.15 Christians, I actually find most Christians 00:06:34.18\00:06:40.90 not having as negative of feeling, 00:06:40.93\00:06:43.29 but there are some. Yeah. 00:06:43.32\00:06:44.96 Because we-- I mean, we're all subject 00:06:44.99\00:06:46.87 to the influence of media and currents events. 00:06:46.90\00:06:49.10 It's easy for stereotypes to prevail. 00:06:49.13\00:06:51.48 And what we don't know we fear. Yeah. 00:06:51.51\00:06:53.65 Now obviously there are vast differences 00:06:53.68\00:06:56.84 in the theology of a Seventh-day Adventist and a Muslim. 00:06:56.87\00:07:00.17 They, I mean, we are different. 00:07:00.20\00:07:02.39 Well, that's why one person is a Muslim 00:07:02.42\00:07:03.88 and one's an Adventist. 00:07:03.91\00:07:05.21 However, there are commonalties 00:07:05.24\00:07:07.98 where we can talk, right? Oh, very much so. 00:07:08.01\00:07:11.16 Tell me about some of those. 00:07:11.19\00:07:12.70 Well, I think probably as Adventist, 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.57 we even have an advantage over many of the other Christians 00:07:14.60\00:07:18.19 because-- Well, we don't eat the unclean foods 00:07:18.22\00:07:22.79 which the Muslims surprised when he first learns that. 00:07:22.82\00:07:27.25 And how big an issue is that for a Muslim? 00:07:27.28\00:07:29.64 Oh, it's a very big. 00:07:29.67\00:07:31.90 Even a Muslim who may not be really following his beliefs in 00:07:31.93\00:07:37.75 really going to the mosque five times a day to prayer, 00:07:37.78\00:07:40.27 pray and maybe kind of lacks in a secular western culture, 00:07:40.30\00:07:46.47 still pig is not the table. 00:07:46.50\00:07:50.24 And so when they see Christians eating pigs 00:07:50.27\00:07:52.54 that raises question marks in their mind. 00:07:52.57\00:07:54.66 Well, they just figured that's what Christians do. Okay. 00:07:54.69\00:07:57.16 And the first question to an Adventist is, 00:07:57.19\00:08:00.69 oh, you are a Christian group. 00:08:00.72\00:08:02.78 Why are you not eating these things? 00:08:02.81\00:08:05.20 Oh, that's interesting. Yeah. 00:08:05.23\00:08:06.26 What other areas? 00:08:06.29\00:08:08.37 Well, the fact that both of us 00:08:08.40\00:08:11.86 beliefs that the end of the world is coming, 00:08:11.89\00:08:14.89 that there is a time of judgment, 00:08:14.92\00:08:17.21 that we are on this earth in a state of away from God 00:08:17.24\00:08:23.54 and the time will come when the judgment will be 00:08:23.57\00:08:26.17 and God can save those who are-- 00:08:26.20\00:08:28.09 That He can save and those that have 00:08:28.12\00:08:29.99 not chosen to follow Him will-- 00:08:30.02\00:08:33.10 Their life will end. 00:08:33.13\00:08:34.58 And so those are the things very much 00:08:34.61\00:08:36.61 that two spiritual people 00:08:36.64\00:08:39.72 even if they have differences of details can definitely share 00:08:39.75\00:08:44.11 and enjoy their friendship together. 00:08:44.14\00:08:49.15 Within Islam, there is an expectation 00:08:50.56\00:08:53.33 that Jesus will come a second time, too. 00:08:53.36\00:08:55.28 Can you describe the way that Muslims see that? 00:08:55.31\00:08:58.99 I could, but there is difference. 00:08:59.02\00:09:03.07 No, there's differences. Right. 00:09:03.10\00:09:05.17 And that's why I hesitate to say, 00:09:05.20\00:09:06.84 this is where they're at. Okay. I understand. 00:09:06.87\00:09:08.93 The Quran itself is-- There is not a detail. 00:09:08.96\00:09:12.66 It's ambiguous. 00:09:12.69\00:09:14.15 Well, I won't say ambiguous. 00:09:14.18\00:09:15.44 It's just the fact that God took Jesus 00:09:15.47\00:09:19.14 from when He lived on Earth and that He will-- 00:09:19.17\00:09:23.45 That He will come back. 00:09:23.48\00:09:24.58 And there's really not a lot of detail. 00:09:24.61\00:09:27.28 So the details that you'll hear from your Muslim friend 00:09:27.31\00:09:31.11 will differ from one to anther, 00:09:31.14\00:09:33.14 but there definitely is an understanding 00:09:33.17\00:09:35.93 that Jesus will return, 00:09:35.96\00:09:37.54 Mohammad will return 00:09:37.57\00:09:38.86 and in that sequence of events peace will come on the Earth. 00:09:38.89\00:09:43.08 There will be unity, there's never been before, 00:09:43.11\00:09:45.53 the end of evil will come in order as the events happen. 00:09:45.56\00:09:52.19 But the details are different. 00:09:52.22\00:09:56.03 Now what is-- 00:09:56.06\00:09:59.29 Your answers gonna be varies. 00:09:59.32\00:10:00.71 But what is the Muslim view of creation, 00:10:00.74\00:10:06.32 if there is? Yes. 00:10:06.35\00:10:09.21 Traditionally they've been very, very strong. 00:10:09.24\00:10:12.83 Strong just like Adventist would be. 00:10:12.86\00:10:15.05 There's a six day. 00:10:15.08\00:10:16.75 There is God created everything. 00:10:16.78\00:10:19.23 And that still layer, which you will find some Muslims 00:10:19.26\00:10:22.81 who see in the Quran, 00:10:22.84\00:10:25.21 the ability just like some Christians 00:10:25.24\00:10:27.23 see in the Bible the ability, 00:10:27.26\00:10:30.02 they think to allow God to be a Creator, 00:10:30.05\00:10:33.61 but evolution process is to happen. 00:10:33.64\00:10:36.32 So you will find that within Islam. 00:10:36.35\00:10:38.28 But I think most of your friends, 00:10:38.31\00:10:42.78 Adventist friends in their neighborhood 00:10:42.81\00:10:45.20 will discover that their spiritual Muslim friends 00:10:45.23\00:10:49.21 will be going the line. 00:10:49.24\00:10:51.48 Hey, God's a Creator. 00:10:51.51\00:10:52.54 God created me. 00:10:52.57\00:10:53.60 I didn't come from-- 00:10:53.63\00:10:54.83 Who knows what in the past. 00:10:54.86\00:10:57.59 Lester, our viewers would like to find out 00:10:57.62\00:11:00.15 more information about the center. 00:11:00.18\00:11:02.36 How can they find that? Okay. 00:11:02.39\00:11:04.06 Probably the easiest direct way 00:11:04.09\00:11:06.48 right now is through the Adventist Mission website, 00:11:06.51\00:11:10.24 just by going to islam.adventistmisison.org. 00:11:10.27\00:11:15.19 Fantastic. 00:11:15.22\00:11:16.25 And we have material to help them know 00:11:16.28\00:11:18.46 the basic beliefs and how to show friendship. 00:11:18.49\00:11:24.68 Lester, thank you so much for sharing with us. 00:11:24.71\00:11:27.33 And as Dr. Merklin pointed out, 00:11:27.36\00:11:29.57 you can just go to islam.adventistmisison.org 00:11:29.60\00:11:33.48 and there you'll find different resources 00:11:33.51\00:11:35.69 to help you better understand your Muslim brothers, 00:11:35.72\00:11:39.07 your neighbors and that you can understand them better. 00:11:39.10\00:11:42.43 I'd like to welcome Earley Simon 00:12:27.94\00:12:29.87 who is the producer of Global Mission Snapshots 00:12:29.90\00:12:33.51 and a colleague in the office of the Adventist Mission. 00:12:33.54\00:12:36.18 Thank you, Earley, for coming from behind the camera 00:12:36.21\00:12:38.92 to share with us. 00:12:38.95\00:12:40.26 Now in your work you get to see a lot of mission activity 00:12:40.29\00:12:43.45 on the front lines. 00:12:43.48\00:12:44.51 And not so long ago you traveled to the country of Nigeria. 00:12:44.54\00:12:50.21 And describe for us what it was like to go Lagos, 00:12:50.24\00:12:53.14 that huge growing city. 00:12:53.17\00:12:54.66 So we left the US and then landed in Lagos. 00:12:54.69\00:12:57.73 It's an amazing big city. 00:12:57.76\00:12:58.90 I myself come from a big city, Sao Paulo. 00:12:58.93\00:13:01.42 There is almost 20 million people there 00:13:01.45\00:13:03.17 and in Lagos, the same way, there's 21 million people. 00:13:03.20\00:13:05.99 The only difference is when you fly over Sao Paulo. 00:13:06.02\00:13:08.03 You get to see all of these tall buildings. 00:13:08.06\00:13:09.98 It's nice sight, it takes a little bit to get to the city. 00:13:10.01\00:13:12.48 And when you get down, you don't see there many people 00:13:12.51\00:13:15.21 because they're all in buildings and different places. 00:13:15.24\00:13:17.73 When you get to Lagos, the city is sort of flat. 00:13:17.76\00:13:19.64 There's a very few tall buildings. 00:13:19.67\00:13:21.74 You got to see a lot of people. 00:13:21.77\00:13:23.30 It's a very lively place there. 00:13:23.33\00:13:24.98 Twenty-one million people and all of them 00:13:25.01\00:13:26.64 they're out on the streets. Yeah. 00:13:26.67\00:13:28.53 Yeah. It's quite a sight. 00:13:28.56\00:13:29.59 Very, very impressive. 00:13:29.62\00:13:32.05 In 2014, actually the country of Nigeria turns 100 years. 00:13:32.08\00:13:36.45 Two British territories were brought together in 1914 00:13:36.48\00:13:40.16 and at that same time Pastor David Caldwell Babcock, 00:13:40.19\00:13:45.49 he was sent as a missionary to the country of Nigeria. 00:13:45.52\00:13:48.48 And what he did there is he started a school. 00:13:48.51\00:13:50.84 So he was the first Adventist Missionary. 00:13:50.87\00:13:52.72 The first Adventist Missionary 00:13:52.75\00:13:53.82 to be officially sent to Nigeria. 00:13:53.85\00:13:56.66 And he started school, he started teaching people, 00:13:56.69\00:13:58.34 teaching them the Bible, teaching them lessons 00:13:58.37\00:14:00.37 that they could use in daily life. 00:14:00.40\00:14:02.34 English might have been one of the things that he taught. 00:14:02.37\00:14:04.71 There are-- I don't know what, 00:14:04.74\00:14:06.16 but he started up by teaching people. 00:14:06.19\00:14:08.72 At the end of the year, they already had some baptisms 00:14:08.75\00:14:10.96 and that continued. 00:14:10.99\00:14:12.64 And he pretty much established the school there. 00:14:12.67\00:14:15.14 And from the time when he arrived 00:14:15.17\00:14:16.61 in 1914 all the way to 1998, they were teaching people. 00:14:16.64\00:14:21.51 And what's special about 1998 is that, 00:14:21.54\00:14:23.41 that year the church team together 00:14:23.44\00:14:25.54 and a special offering was taken for that institution. 00:14:25.57\00:14:29.75 What they needed then was funds 00:14:29.78\00:14:31.02 to make a larger to put one more building there 00:14:31.05\00:14:34.80 so that school would receive the title of university. 00:14:34.83\00:14:38.48 The government would grant them that title. 00:14:38.51\00:14:40.54 And they didn't have the money, they had raised some, 00:14:40.57\00:14:43.34 but the church came together 00:14:43.37\00:14:44.68 and they gave a special offering 00:14:44.71\00:14:46.27 through the 13th Sabbath Offering. 00:14:46.30\00:14:48.28 And they were able to get in just enough funds 00:14:48.31\00:14:51.13 to raise the leftwing of their tech-building 00:14:51.16\00:14:54.22 which is the tech-building at this time 00:14:54.25\00:14:55.46 in the science building. 00:14:55.49\00:14:57.22 And that's how the school started. 00:14:57.25\00:14:59.85 They started with about-- 00:14:59.88\00:15:01.15 Once they got the university title, 00:15:01.18\00:15:02.50 they had about 1,000 students 00:15:02.53\00:15:04.31 and now they have eight plus thousands students 00:15:04.34\00:15:06.51 at the university. Wow. 00:15:06.54\00:15:07.57 Now I just want to back up, 00:15:07.60\00:15:08.63 you mentioned 13th Sabbath Offerings 00:15:08.66\00:15:11.27 that were pivotal moment because they help fund 00:15:11.30\00:15:14.52 this which they got the change. 00:15:14.55\00:15:16.34 What is the 13th Sabbath Offering? 00:15:16.37\00:15:18.69 The 13th Sabbath Offering is 00:15:18.72\00:15:20.64 where people can bring extraordinary offering. 00:15:20.67\00:15:24.18 It's where people get to help specific projects 00:15:24.21\00:15:26.97 that your church has selected. 00:15:27.00\00:15:28.58 It's one of those places where you can always put your money 00:15:28.61\00:15:30.82 with safety and say we know the church 00:15:30.85\00:15:32.39 is gonna invest really well in this area. 00:15:32.42\00:15:34.50 There's a lot of criteria 00:15:34.53\00:15:36.37 that goes through approving those projects. 00:15:36.40\00:15:38.26 They go to things like missionary boats, 00:15:38.29\00:15:40.52 schools like the one we're talking about, 00:15:40.55\00:15:42.61 health institutions, pioneer's churches. 00:15:42.64\00:15:46.17 There's a number of different things 00:15:46.20\00:15:47.51 that 13th Sabbath Offering sponsors. Yes. 00:15:47.54\00:15:49.90 So that's collected in Adventist Church at every 13th Sabbath 00:15:49.93\00:15:52.85 and people can also go online at adventistmission.org 00:15:52.88\00:15:57.44 and they can give that offering there. 00:15:57.47\00:15:59.08 That's right. So they can do it anytime. 00:15:59.11\00:16:00.59 They don't have to wait for the 13th Sabbath. 00:16:00.62\00:16:02.28 Yeah, now sorry for interrupting, but they-- 00:16:02.31\00:16:04.29 So the Babcock University now grown to more than 8,000-- 00:16:04.32\00:16:09.08 Eight thousand students. Can you believe it? 00:16:09.11\00:16:10.66 People came together, donated, 00:16:10.69\00:16:12.07 and wow, something huge happened. 00:16:12.10\00:16:14.49 I got to visit two people there. 00:16:14.52\00:16:16.41 One it was Luke Onahu, 00:16:16.44\00:16:18.81 he's the vice president for finance 00:16:18.84\00:16:20.61 and he's the one that got to show me around 00:16:20.64\00:16:22.10 and tell us the story, that impressive story. 00:16:22.13\00:16:25.23 And then he brought us to one of the students, 00:16:25.26\00:16:26.57 Michal, he's the leader of the student association and body. 00:16:26.60\00:16:30.84 And when he came to the university, 00:16:30.87\00:16:32.17 he was not an Adventist. 00:16:32.20\00:16:33.82 So he came, he's very impressed with the way things were running 00:16:33.85\00:16:38.28 and with the way that the professors taught each class 00:16:38.31\00:16:41.07 and how they connected, you know, 00:16:41.10\00:16:43.59 Biblical principle with even math and history 00:16:43.62\00:16:46.21 and other things that they studied. 00:16:46.24\00:16:47.43 Everything was, you know, from the perspective of the Bible. 00:16:47.46\00:16:49.97 And he was very impressed with that 00:16:50.00\00:16:51.24 and he gave his life to God and he got baptized. 00:16:51.27\00:16:54.32 And so now he's one more positive influence, 00:16:54.35\00:16:56.96 many students that come in. 00:16:56.99\00:16:58.48 Well, fantastic. 00:16:58.51\00:16:59.73 Now, what sort of subjects do they teach at the university? 00:16:59.76\00:17:05.25 Oh, they have quite a wide range of options. 00:17:05.28\00:17:08.83 They have nursing, medical school, 00:17:08.86\00:17:11.32 business, law, theology and probably few others 00:17:11.35\00:17:15.15 that I can't remember at the moment. 00:17:15.18\00:17:16.48 And I think that many of the leaders of the government 00:17:16.51\00:17:19.54 had been trained in Babcock, so it's quite an influence. 00:17:19.57\00:17:23.24 Some years ago, he is not the president anymore, 00:17:23.27\00:17:25.32 but the son of the president 00:17:25.35\00:17:26.40 attended Babcock University. Yeah. 00:17:26.43\00:17:28.03 So you know the level of education 00:17:28.06\00:17:29.73 that they're providing. 00:17:29.76\00:17:31.00 Now they're expanding the reach of the university as well. 00:17:31.03\00:17:33.76 Tell us about that. They're expanding Babcock. 00:17:33.79\00:17:36.84 When you visit, you think it's a whole city in itself. 00:17:36.87\00:17:38.88 It's that big. There's many buildings all over. 00:17:38.91\00:17:41.56 And what they're doing now is moving the school 00:17:41.59\00:17:42.99 to different places with satellite campuses. 00:17:43.02\00:17:45.75 So even more people have a chance 00:17:45.78\00:17:47.83 to go to school to get an education, 00:17:47.86\00:17:50.52 to be a benefit to their families, 00:17:50.55\00:17:51.82 to their country, you know. 00:17:51.85\00:17:53.16 I was gonna ask you that, 00:17:53.19\00:17:54.27 what role does education play in Africa? 00:17:54.30\00:17:59.05 Education is very important anywhere. 00:17:59.08\00:18:01.06 And I-- From what Babcock 00:18:01.09\00:18:03.62 does in educating the many people of Nigeria, 00:18:03.65\00:18:06.85 you can only imagine what the benefit is to the country 00:18:06.88\00:18:09.31 and the country values that university. 00:18:09.34\00:18:11.51 Yeah. 00:18:11.54\00:18:13.46 So is it 100% Seventh-day Adventist students? 00:18:13.49\00:18:17.19 No, that's the thing that I found very interesting, 00:18:17.22\00:18:19.46 even in visiting other education institutions 00:18:19.49\00:18:23.03 in the West Africa in that region, 00:18:23.06\00:18:25.79 some schools, a lot of students are-- 00:18:25.82\00:18:27.84 Most of the students are not Adventist. 00:18:27.87\00:18:29.52 In Babcock, there is a great number of students 00:18:29.55\00:18:31.72 that are not Adventist. 00:18:31.75\00:18:33.01 In Babcock, what stood out to me is they-- 00:18:33.04\00:18:37.84 I don't know if--I don't know exactly the number, 00:18:37.87\00:18:40.36 but it's almost a third of the students 00:18:40.39\00:18:41.92 that come there at the end 00:18:41.95\00:18:43.76 when they leave they make a decision for the Lord 00:18:43.79\00:18:47.07 and that's very encouraging to hear. 00:18:47.10\00:18:48.49 Because it's a place where they get to mingle 00:18:48.52\00:18:51.86 with Adventist to learn about the church 00:18:51.89\00:18:54.24 and it becomes a mission endeavor. That's right. 00:18:54.27\00:18:57.47 So, Earley, what was the main impression 00:18:57.50\00:19:01.54 that Babcock University left on you? 00:19:01.57\00:19:05.36 The main impression for me was that the church came together. 00:19:05.39\00:19:09.21 And, you know, with something simple in the beginning, 00:19:09.24\00:19:11.36 it probably wasn't a very little money 00:19:11.39\00:19:13.12 that people came together to give 00:19:13.15\00:19:15.04 and that set up such a big institute.
