On today's program sharing Jesus in a secular society. 00:00:01.06\00:00:05.59 Pastor Ted Wilson, 00:00:05.62\00:00:06.65 Seventh-day Adventist World church president 00:00:06.68\00:00:09.81 and a Messy Church in England all that 00:00:09.84\00:00:12.86 and much more coming up next on "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:12.89\00:00:16.54 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:27.23\00:00:29.89 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:29.92\00:00:32.85 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, go. 00:00:32.88\00:00:38.02 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:38.05\00:00:42.95 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:42.98\00:00:46.79 Hello, and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:52.91\00:00:55.30 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:55.33\00:00:56.95 Today we will be talking with Pastor Ted Wilson 00:00:56.98\00:00:59.25 about a subject that's close to his heart 00:00:59.28\00:01:02.05 "Mission to the Cities." 00:01:02.08\00:01:03.85 We will also talk with Kleber Goncalves, 00:01:03.88\00:01:05.90 senior pastor of a ground breaking 00:01:05.93\00:01:08.44 rapidly growing church 00:01:08.47\00:01:10.34 in the heart of Sao Paulo, Brazil. 00:01:10.37\00:01:12.78 Dr. Goncalves is also director of the Global Mission's Center 00:01:12.81\00:01:16.72 for Secular and Postmodern Studies. 00:01:16.75\00:01:19.46 We will also visit a church in London, 00:01:19.49\00:01:21.01 England using the creative children's 00:01:21.04\00:01:23.18 church program called "Messy Church." 00:01:23.21\00:01:26.77 But, first stop let's travel to South America 00:01:26.80\00:01:29.31 to the country of Peru and meet Eva 00:01:29.34\00:01:32.42 a church planter who started a church 00:01:32.45\00:01:34.73 in her own town in part 00:01:34.76\00:01:37.06 because she just didn't want to travel 00:01:37.09\00:01:38.62 30 minutes by bus every Sabbath. 00:01:38.65\00:01:41.08 Along the coast of Peru, lies the town of Huanchaco. 00:01:49.56\00:01:54.26 Once a small beach town 00:01:54.29\00:01:55.46 with no Seventh-day Adventist community. 00:01:55.49\00:01:58.00 Huanchaco is now home to a growing congregation. 00:01:58.03\00:02:01.42 When Eva Sanchez moved here, 00:02:12.84\00:02:14.96 she longed for a church community. 00:02:14.99\00:02:17.48 Since the closest Seventh-day Adventist church 00:02:17.51\00:02:19.66 was more than a 30 minute bus ride away. 00:02:19.69\00:02:22.63 Eva took it upon herself to be a witness in her own town. 00:02:22.66\00:02:27.44 Eva found a small humble building to have meeting in 00:02:27.47\00:02:30.93 and invited the whole community to attend. 00:02:30.96\00:02:34.11 After seeing the effectiveness of the meetings 00:02:34.14\00:02:36.74 Eva realized the great need 00:02:36.77\00:02:38.38 for a church with in this community. 00:02:38.41\00:02:40.55 [speaking in foreign language] 00:02:40.58\00:02:44.15 With a growing interest from the people in Huanchaco, 00:02:52.09\00:02:55.08 Eva is still reaching out 00:02:55.11\00:02:56.66 to those searching for the light of Jesus. 00:02:56.69\00:02:59.12 Sometimes she walks great distances 00:02:59.15\00:03:01.42 to visit people in their homes 00:03:01.45\00:03:03.48 and develops lasting relationships 00:03:03.51\00:03:05.46 with those she reaches out to. 00:03:05.49\00:03:07.37 Her efforts have had great impact on her community. 00:03:07.40\00:03:11.28 [speaking in foreign language] 00:03:11.31\00:03:15.40 I shared the gospel because I'm thankful to God 00:03:21.81\00:03:25.29 because Jesus touched my heart 00:03:25.32\00:03:27.51 and I really feel the power of Jesus. 00:03:27.54\00:03:30.50 I want to continue to share the gospel. 00:03:30.53\00:03:33.88 Eva has finally found the church community 00:03:33.91\00:03:36.23 she longed for when she moved to Huanchaco. 00:03:36.26\00:03:39.88 As the numbers in this congregation continue to grow 00:03:39.91\00:03:43.08 their church building remains the same size. 00:03:43.11\00:03:46.39 They are hoping to expand their building 00:03:46.42\00:03:48.27 to fit the needs of the congregation. 00:03:48.30\00:03:51.06 The needs for this church 00:03:51.09\00:03:52.43 and many others around the world are great. 00:03:52.46\00:03:56.29 Please pray, for the faithful members in Huanchaco 00:03:56.32\00:03:59.74 that they may continue to grow 00:03:59.77\00:04:01.65 and be a light to their community. 00:04:01.68\00:04:03.50 And thank you, for your support of the mission 00:04:03.53\00:04:06.43 of the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:04:06.46\00:04:08.42 It's my pleasure to introduce our guest 00:04:18.40\00:04:20.89 Pastor Ted Wilson, who is the president 00:04:20.92\00:04:22.90 of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:04:22.93\00:04:25.32 Dr. Wilson, thank you for joining us. 00:04:25.35\00:04:27.07 Thank you so much, Gary. 00:04:27.10\00:04:28.63 One of the things that you have been talking a lot about 00:04:28.66\00:04:31.03 in recent years is mission to the cities. 00:04:31.06\00:04:34.35 Why is this so important? 00:04:34.38\00:04:36.49 Now, first of all that's where the people are. 00:04:36.52\00:04:39.68 About three, four years ago the actual balance 00:04:39.71\00:04:45.69 of where people live swung more into the city 00:04:45.72\00:04:50.48 and urban area than in the rural area. 00:04:50.51\00:04:52.93 So now there are more than 50% of the world's populations 00:04:52.96\00:04:55.55 they live in the metropolitan areas. 00:04:55.58\00:04:59.74 Within a few brief years if the Lord doesn't come 00:04:59.77\00:05:05.22 before then, probably about 70% 00:05:05.25\00:05:09.31 will be living in these urban areas. 00:05:09.34\00:05:11.82 So, it's a place that God has called us to go. 00:05:11.85\00:05:16.15 In fact, when you read in scripture 00:05:16.18\00:05:20.21 about Christ's own mission 00:05:20.24\00:05:24.41 and His own activities you read verses such as in, 00:05:24.44\00:05:29.79 in Matthew 9:35, 36 00:05:29.82\00:05:35.15 Jesus went about all the cities and villages. All right? 00:05:35.18\00:05:39.27 Yes, He went to the rural areas as well and of course 00:05:39.30\00:05:41.69 admittedly those cities were not huge at that time. 00:05:41.72\00:05:44.56 But, He went around to the cities and villages, 00:05:44.59\00:05:47.56 teaching, preaching, healing 00:05:47.59\00:05:50.94 and then it says in the next verse 36 00:05:50.97\00:05:53.16 when He saw the multitudes, so these were the-- 00:05:53.19\00:05:55.31 this large groups of people 00:05:55.34\00:05:57.18 He was moved with compassion on them. 00:05:57.21\00:06:00.29 They were like you know, sheep that didn't have a shepherd. 00:06:00.32\00:06:03.54 So, we need to use Christ's model 00:06:03.57\00:06:07.28 and Christ's example of reaching the people in these big cities, 00:06:07.31\00:06:11.91 touching them in ways that will help them respond 00:06:11.94\00:06:16.80 to the precious message that Jesus loves them, 00:06:16.83\00:06:20.11 that He is returning to take them home 00:06:20.14\00:06:22.81 and that He has special plans for their lives 00:06:22.84\00:06:25.13 and they needs to be part of telling somebody else. 00:06:25.16\00:06:27.68 So the cities have become a great theme for us now 00:06:27.71\00:06:32.27 and mission to the cities because number one 00:06:32.30\00:06:34.97 that's where the people are, we have been instructed 00:06:35.00\00:06:37.66 that we are to work in the cities 00:06:37.69\00:06:40.19 and that will require unusual methods 00:06:40.22\00:06:42.83 and more finances, personnel 00:06:42.86\00:06:46.23 but that God will bless as we follow in His example 00:06:46.26\00:06:49.40 just as He did to go into those cities and villages. 00:06:49.43\00:06:53.52 Dr. Wilson, early on you served as a-- 00:06:53.55\00:06:56.32 as a pastor in New York City. 00:06:56.35\00:06:58.39 How did that shape your outlook? 00:06:58.42\00:07:01.37 Well, I had the privilege of being a pastor 00:07:01.40\00:07:03.14 a little bit out of city on Long Island 00:07:03.17\00:07:05.48 and then working in the city 00:07:05.51\00:07:06.78 for about five years in special evangelistic activity 00:07:06.81\00:07:11.33 and that has indelibly changed the way 00:07:11.36\00:07:16.34 I look at cities and at our ministry 00:07:16.37\00:07:20.77 and the way in which we work for people. 00:07:20.80\00:07:24.46 You cannot live in a big city 00:07:24.49\00:07:26.46 and see those millions of people every day 00:07:26.49\00:07:29.54 and not be affected by the haunting question, 00:07:29.57\00:07:33.03 how many of them really know the Lord? 00:07:33.06\00:07:35.76 How are we gonna reach those people 00:07:35.79\00:07:37.60 with this precious message 00:07:37.63\00:07:40.34 the advent message that Jesus is coming, 00:07:40.37\00:07:42.61 the Three Angels Messages to help them to understand 00:07:42.64\00:07:45.18 that Christ righteousness has been provided for them 00:07:45.21\00:07:48.98 and that Christ is at the centre of everything 00:07:49.01\00:07:51.03 that we want to, to present. 00:07:51.06\00:07:55.05 It has changed my way of thinking 00:07:55.08\00:07:57.25 and obviously even now as I mean this particular role 00:07:57.28\00:08:02.78 I still have a great burden for the cities. 00:08:02.81\00:08:05.61 And happily God has provided so many others 00:08:05.64\00:08:11.23 who are catching that enthusiasm as well 00:08:11.26\00:08:15.27 and they see that we need to go where the people are 00:08:15.30\00:08:18.96 because those people are once for whom Christ died. 00:08:18.99\00:08:24.21 And if we are not showing compassion to them 00:08:24.24\00:08:27.22 and we are just focusing on the places 00:08:27.25\00:08:29.36 that we feel conformable with 00:08:29.39\00:08:32.12 we are not doing Christ's ministry. 00:08:32.15\00:08:36.70 Tell me about the plans that the church is putting 00:08:36.73\00:08:39.03 in place for city ministry around the world. 00:08:39.06\00:08:42.14 Well, first of all we like to call it 00:08:42.17\00:08:43.98 Comprehensive Urban Evangelism. 00:08:44.01\00:08:47.18 And by that it means something far greater than 00:08:47.21\00:08:50.50 just holding a public evangelistic meeting 00:08:50.53\00:08:53.72 which is certainly the combination of many actives 00:08:53.75\00:08:57.07 and in many places, still a very violable way to reach people. 00:08:57.10\00:09:01.32 However that's not the complete focus. 00:09:01.35\00:09:04.84 The Spirit of Prophecy is indicated to us 00:09:04.87\00:09:07.10 many ways in which to reach people in the cities. 00:09:07.13\00:09:11.84 You need to use everything from centers of influence 00:09:11.87\00:09:16.36 something which you are helping to champion, 00:09:16.39\00:09:18.48 which is a wonderful thing. 00:09:18.51\00:09:19.97 It could be a church, it could be a health centre, 00:09:20.00\00:09:22.28 it could be a reading room, it could be a place 00:09:22.31\00:09:24.80 where young people gather to then 00:09:24.83\00:09:27.05 go out and meet with others. 00:09:27.08\00:09:29.57 It could be all kinds of things, 00:09:29.60\00:09:31.66 many of those having to do perhaps with health. 00:09:31.69\00:09:34.97 Because comprehensive health ministry 00:09:35.00\00:09:38.64 which we are also promoting heavily now 00:09:38.67\00:09:41.27 and we are gonna be talking more about it. 00:09:41.30\00:09:43.36 It is a way in which to argument 00:09:43.39\00:09:47.38 the gospel messages called the right arm 00:09:47.41\00:09:50.08 to the gospel messages. 00:09:50.11\00:09:51.14 It's not the message but it's the right arm 00:09:51.17\00:09:53.78 and it's to help draw people into a loving relationship 00:09:53.81\00:09:57.37 with Christ meeting their needs. 00:09:57.40\00:09:59.52 But we are to use everything from door to door 00:09:59.55\00:10:02.30 visitation, to use of publications, 00:10:02.33\00:10:05.72 to having young people work, to having church members 00:10:05.75\00:10:09.06 involved in community outreach, 00:10:09.09\00:10:11.38 community services and Adventist community service 00:10:11.41\00:10:15.92 in general to help people in the areas, 00:10:15.95\00:10:19.87 to use integrated media evangelism 00:10:19.90\00:10:23.16 and of course a very strong health emphasis. 00:10:23.19\00:10:27.67 All of these things put together 00:10:27.70\00:10:29.82 are going to then faster contacts 00:10:29.85\00:10:32.76 and a kind of an integrated way 00:10:32.79\00:10:35.43 in which a comprehensive way, in which to bring people 00:10:35.46\00:10:38.70 into contact with vibrant genuine Seventh-day Adventists 00:10:38.73\00:10:43.44 and the Holy Spirit can use that 00:10:43.47\00:10:45.19 and then people can become part of the advent movement 00:10:45.22\00:10:49.15 because they see Jesus 00:10:49.18\00:10:50.93 in those who are ministering to them 00:10:50.96\00:10:53.56 following Christ methods. 00:10:53.59\00:10:54.97 So there are just all kinds of creative ways to try 00:10:55.00\00:10:57.57 and reach people in the cities 00:10:57.60\00:11:00.04 and you just need to get on your knees, pray 00:11:00.07\00:11:03.78 and ask the Lord to help you develop 00:11:03.81\00:11:05.69 something creative that's gonna touch a neighbor 00:11:05.72\00:11:08.53 or a community 00:11:08.56\00:11:10.01 and when you talk about a community 00:11:10.04\00:11:11.36 it could be just one apartment building in a big city. 00:11:11.39\00:11:13.04 Right, exactly. 00:11:13.07\00:11:14.97 Thank you so much, Pastor Wilson. 00:11:15.00\00:11:16.85 Viewers at home, if you are inspired 00:11:16.88\00:11:19.36 and challenged to do something about urban mission, 00:11:19.39\00:11:22.49 if you would like to be involved, 00:11:22.52\00:11:23.62 if you would like to learn more 00:11:23.65\00:11:25.22 just go to www.missiontothecities.org 00:11:25.25\00:11:29.12 There you will see about the range of actives 00:11:29.15\00:11:31.26 the church is involved in 00:11:31.29\00:11:32.81 and how you too can participate. 00:11:32.84\00:11:34.60 One of the biggest mission challenges 00:12:22.25\00:12:24.37 and opportunities facing the church 00:12:24.40\00:12:27.27 is what we call postmodernism. 00:12:27.30\00:12:29.36 And my guest Pastor Kleber Goncalves 00:12:29.39\00:12:31.93 has not only studied this phenomenon 00:12:31.96\00:12:34.35 but he is also ministering to this group of peoples. 00:12:34.38\00:12:37.10 So Kleber, thank you so much for joining us. My pleasure. 00:12:37.13\00:12:40.04 When we travel from Brazil to the Untied States, 00:12:40.07\00:12:42.36 specifically to study, to research 00:12:42.39\00:12:45.72 you are interested in postmodernism why? 00:12:45.75\00:12:49.29 Well I noticed in my ministry back in Brazil that 00:12:49.32\00:12:53.30 we are not being meaningful 00:12:53.33\00:12:55.97 and relevant to those along with us. 00:12:56.00\00:12:58.84 And then I started to study these trends. 00:12:58.87\00:13:01.42 What's going on with people's minds? 00:13:01.45\00:13:05.26 Right now, we face this paradigm shift 00:13:05.29\00:13:08.41 and actually even the definitions go postmodernism 00:13:08.44\00:13:10.98 which is something very difficult to us right now. 00:13:11.01\00:13:14.44 When you look at the literature, 00:13:14.47\00:13:16.02 you see out towards writable post, 00:13:16.05\00:13:19.48 postmodernism. Right, just to confuse. 00:13:19.51\00:13:21.54 Even in post, postmodernism 00:13:21.57\00:13:24.89 and actually the difference itself 00:13:24.92\00:13:27.65 is not something that we should be too concerned. 00:13:27.68\00:13:31.98 We are living this paradigm shift right now 00:13:32.01\00:13:35.75 and it's very hard for you to find something 00:13:35.78\00:13:37.48 when you are going through the process. 00:13:37.51\00:13:40.14 It's easier just look at the past 00:13:40.17\00:13:42.01 and then you can pin point's aspects. 00:13:42.04\00:13:43.98 But right now, we are going through this change. 00:13:44.01\00:13:46.57 People no longer guide by the pillars of the modern 00:13:46.60\00:13:50.93 type of thinking about reason, science, technology, 00:13:50.96\00:13:54.97 as the solution for all of our problems. 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.78 There are room, there is room right now for-- 00:13:57.81\00:14:01.98 turn there is some better emotions intuition 00:14:02.01\00:14:04.66 and how do we go about life 00:14:04.69\00:14:06.56 in these different type of context. 00:14:06.59\00:14:10.25 And one of the main issues I noticed 00:14:10.28\00:14:13.18 in something that it's a real wonderful opportunity for us 00:14:13.21\00:14:18.16 is the openness to the spiritual 00:14:18.19\00:14:21.24 and coincidental experiences. 00:14:21.27\00:14:24.49 It is something that we can see all over the place 00:14:24.52\00:14:27.85 but there is another issue that is important for us 00:14:27.88\00:14:30.60 to understand postmodernism has different phases in the world. 00:14:30.63\00:14:34.45 We cannot simply say that to some experience we face 00:14:34.48\00:14:37.53 and South America is the same thing 00:14:37.56\00:14:39.25 that goes here in US or in Europe 00:14:39.28\00:14:42.34 even though the main points or aspects are the same. 00:14:42.37\00:14:46.31 And one of the aspects is that there is a, 00:14:46.34\00:14:50.07 a disrespect for what used to be authority 00:14:50.10\00:14:54.61 figures that are served 00:14:54.64\00:14:56.23 before if the Bible said 00:14:56.26\00:14:57.47 it must be true postmodernism is a question then. 00:14:57.50\00:15:01.01 Of course, when you talk to the postmodern person 00:15:01.04\00:15:04.69 and something that's it's really, 00:15:04.72\00:15:06.37 it's clear every one who goes through the academic process 00:15:06.40\00:15:09.93 they leave the university any university saying that 00:15:09.96\00:15:12.92 truth is something relative about to what or to whom? 00:15:12.95\00:15:18.57 Your truth is different from my truth. 00:15:18.60\00:15:19.81 Exactly, because you built your truth 00:15:19.84\00:15:22.74 according to your feelings, 00:15:22.77\00:15:24.45 according to what you understand or want to like. 00:15:24.48\00:15:27.57 So it's hard to simple force 00:15:27.60\00:15:30.76 an external authority like the Bible upon themselves. 00:15:30.79\00:15:34.79 That's our challenge how can we show Christ 00:15:34.82\00:15:37.71 and the Bible as a alternative type of text 00:15:37.74\00:15:43.19 to someone who simply do not believe in this kind of stuff. 00:15:43.22\00:15:46.48 So it's like there is-- 00:15:46.51\00:15:47.54 almost like a buffet of different options 00:15:47.57\00:15:49.58 and people say, I have a little bit of eastern religion 00:15:49.61\00:15:51.48 I have a touch of Christianity 00:15:51.51\00:15:52.83 and I have a little bit of this and construct their own, right. 00:15:52.86\00:15:54.93 One of the characteristics of this era is pluralism. 00:15:54.96\00:15:58.64 You see they are open. 00:15:58.67\00:16:00.19 Well, let's me experience 00:16:00.22\00:16:01.40 and they try to pick a little bit of everything 00:16:01.43\00:16:05.18 and to see it will fits to their life's. 00:16:05.21\00:16:07.52 But, of course as you say this is an opportunity 00:16:07.55\00:16:09.97 for Christian Mission. 00:16:10.00\00:16:11.03 Sure, knowing the past I would say may be three, 00:16:11.06\00:16:13.53 four decades ago, the question people had is, 00:16:13.56\00:16:16.29 is there a God. 00:16:16.32\00:16:17.44 Today, that's no longer a question that has been asked. 00:16:17.47\00:16:21.14 People are asking which God, 00:16:21.17\00:16:22.94 because there are willing to experience 00:16:22.97\00:16:24.79 on little bit of eastern religions 00:16:24.82\00:16:26.88 from any type of spiritual experience. 00:16:26.91\00:16:29.84 So, it's a door that's right open to us right now. 00:16:29.87\00:16:33.09 So the secret is how to make a relevant 00:16:33.12\00:16:37.70 and a meaning approach to them 00:16:37.73\00:16:39.55 because they are looking for us something. 00:16:39.58\00:16:42.35 But I have been working with them for a several years 00:16:42.38\00:16:45.27 and I know that they need to have this strongest experience 00:16:45.30\00:16:48.50 with God for this reason. 00:16:48.53\00:16:50.03 Right, and so you are rubbing shoulders 00:16:50.06\00:16:52.34 with these people in your ministry 00:16:52.37\00:16:53.87 tell me of somebody who, who has been touched 00:16:53.90\00:16:57.18 to come from this sort of a mind set, 00:16:57.21\00:16:58.97 this sort of background has been touched 00:16:59.00\00:17:00.67 through the ministry of Nova Semente? 00:17:00.70\00:17:02.36 Well, we have had so many experiences 00:17:02.39\00:17:05.28 in through one ministry it's amazing Gary, 00:17:05.31\00:17:07.78 it's through our choir. 00:17:07.81\00:17:09.39 They come to church, they see the choir 00:17:09.42\00:17:11.66 and they want to participate. 00:17:11.69\00:17:13.31 And we have taken a decision as church. 00:17:13.34\00:17:16.52 We are willing to get and to receive people 00:17:16.55\00:17:19.51 who are not members in our church 00:17:19.54\00:17:21.52 and singing through the choir 00:17:21.55\00:17:23.60 so they can create friendship in that community 00:17:23.63\00:17:28.00 it's their family and that's being transformed 00:17:28.03\00:17:30.93 to that particular experience. 00:17:30.96\00:17:32.40 We have several people who have accepted Christ 00:17:32.43\00:17:35.34 through the music of ministry. 00:17:35.37\00:17:36.95 So they actually come they sit in the choir, 00:17:36.98\00:17:38.68 they make friends. 00:17:38.71\00:17:40.28 Now from what you are saying, 00:17:40.31\00:17:41.35 it seems to me that it's a very important first step 00:17:41.38\00:17:44.67 to get that sense of belonging. 00:17:44.70\00:17:46.33 Oh, sure and one thing that we have learned. 00:17:46.36\00:17:50.22 In order to reach in their hearts 00:17:50.25\00:17:55.36 we need to use a different approach 00:17:55.39\00:17:58.80 in which they can feel this is my family. 00:17:58.83\00:18:01.66 They come from broken relationships. 00:18:01.69\00:18:04.09 So we are simply open up our doors and so, 00:18:04.12\00:18:07.02 come as you are, let's live together 00:18:07.05\00:18:09.80 and then they understand how important is 00:18:09.83\00:18:12.17 to live this life with God with Christ, 00:18:12.20\00:18:14.80 you know to be changed 00:18:14.83\00:18:16.35 and to experience a new way of living. 00:18:16.38\00:18:19.21 Kleber, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:18:19.24\00:18:22.34 And viewers, if you want to find out more about mission 00:18:22.37\00:18:26.44 and ministry to secular and postmodern people 00:18:26.47\00:18:28.78 just visit www. secularandpostmodernstudies.org. 00:18:28.81\00:18:35.23 I've been working with Messy Church for five years now. 00:18:51.40\00:18:55.05 We started of very small as a small group of moms 00:18:55.08\00:18:57.79 and a few friends and over the last five years 00:18:57.82\00:19:01.12 it has grown to considerable size. 00:19:01.15\00:19:04.42 Estelle is a member of the Stanborough Park 00:19:06.46\00:19:08.84 Seventh-day Adventist Church in England. 00:19:08.87\00:19:11.47 She plays a key role in running a special program here. 00:19:11.50\00:19:15.03 This church has adopted 00:19:15.06\00:19:16.30 a program known as "Messy Church." 00:19:16.33\00:19:19.41 Messy Church was started by the Anglican Church 00:19:19.44\00:19:22.38 and then was adapted to fit the needs 00:19:22.41\00:19:24.09 of this Seventh-day Adventist congregation. 00:19:24.12\00:19:27.85 Messy Church is meant to reach out 00:19:27.88\00:19:29.51 to the community in a fun, interactive way. 00:19:29.54\00:19:33.01 Church members are encouraged to invite neighbors and friends 00:19:33.04\00:19:35.91 who may not normally attend church otherwise. 00:19:35.94\00:19:38.87 The programs are designed for children. 00:19:38.90\00:19:41.68 They do crafts, sing songs, 00:19:41.71\00:19:43.73 and find creative ways to teach the lessons from the Bible. 00:19:43.76\00:19:46.92 Each child is required to bring at least one adult along, 00:19:46.95\00:19:50.59 and the adults seem to have just as much fun as the kids. 00:19:50.62\00:19:53.76 The reactions that some people give-- 00:20:00.58\00:20:02.55 some people are overwhelmed with how many we have come. 00:20:02.58\00:20:06.21 We have between 200 and 250 00:20:06.24\00:20:08.80 that attend on a regular basis now each month. 00:20:08.83\00:20:11.60 And so, when they sign up to come throughout the month 00:20:11.63\00:20:14.38 they think that may be 00:20:14.41\00:20:15.47 it's just a group of 20 or 30 children and parents. 00:20:15.50\00:20:19.12 And when they realize that the whole church 00:20:19.15\00:20:20.90 has been taken over, with each room. 00:20:20.93\00:20:23.22 It can be a little overwhelming with the noise 00:20:23.25\00:20:25.05 and lots of children running around. 00:20:25.08\00:20:26.81 But they get excited and the kids get so thrilled 00:20:26.84\00:20:29.59 and excited to meet up with friends 00:20:29.62\00:20:31.32 and to take part in the activities together. 00:20:31.35\00:20:33.48 The activities are focused around Jesus. 00:20:34.71\00:20:37.73 Kids and adults alike 00:20:37.76\00:20:39.13 learn some of the valuable lessons from the Bible. 00:20:39.16\00:20:42.55 Messy Church meets only once a month 00:20:42.58\00:20:44.51 and the people who attend often come back 00:20:44.54\00:20:46.79 each month bringing friends along with them the next time. 00:20:46.82\00:20:50.04 Although it only meets only once a month, 00:20:53.08\00:20:54.69 dozens of church members are always busy planning 00:20:54.72\00:20:57.90 and preparing for the next meeting. 00:20:57.93\00:21:00.19 There are so many different ways the members can get involved. 00:21:00.22\00:21:03.49 I'm involved in a lot of music in the church 00:21:03.52\00:21:06.95 so when I got the opportunity to sing with the praise team 00:21:06.98\00:21:09.72 I said, yeah sure I'd be happy to. 00:21:09.75\00:21:11.19 I love working with kids 00:21:11.22\00:21:12.25 and I love being a part of entertainment. 00:21:12.28\00:21:14.17 So, that's been something 00:21:14.20\00:21:16.30 I've been doing for the past year 00:21:16.33\00:21:17.36 and I've really enjoyed it. 00:21:17.39\00:21:19.11 Here at Messy Church there's even a special meal 00:21:19.14\00:21:22.03 planned for the visitors to end the program. 00:21:22.06\00:21:24.70 They spend hours preparing this meal 00:21:24.73\00:21:26.84 for the crowd of visitors. 00:21:26.87\00:21:28.59 The church members work with open 00:21:28.62\00:21:30.25 and willing hearts. 00:21:30.28\00:21:32.15 To say my favorite part of Messy Church 00:21:45.66\00:21:47.25 is actually the organizing. 00:21:47.28\00:21:48.64 It does take time 00:21:48.67\00:21:50.00 but it's really exciting to put the menus together, 00:21:50.03\00:21:52.81 to try and find exciting ways 00:21:52.84\00:21:54.47 that we can link the theme for the month through the food 00:21:54.50\00:21:57.60 that we provide for those who come to visit. 00:21:57.63\00:21:59.87 Members like Michael find themselves 00:21:59.90\00:22:02.14 getting involved every time 00:22:02.17\00:22:04.05 because they love and believe 00:22:04.08\00:22:05.59 in this fun form of outreach. 00:22:05.62\00:22:07.87 For me personally, even though at the end of the day 00:22:07.90\00:22:11.43 I'm quite exhausted, I quite enjoy it. 00:22:11.46\00:22:14.80 I look forward to the next Messy Church. 00:22:14.83\00:22:17.68 The opportunity to socialize 00:22:17.71\00:22:19.34 and to see the people I've met in the past 00:22:19.37\00:22:21.66 but not only that, to see the smiles on the children, 00:22:21.69\00:22:25.26 to see the smiles on the actual families 00:22:25.29\00:22:27.67 and who come back and say hello to you. 00:22:27.70\00:22:30.23 I think, there seems to be something positive 00:22:30.26\00:22:33.44 that the church is doing via Messy Church. 00:22:33.47\00:22:36.94 Please pray for Messy Church 00:22:36.97\00:22:38.82 that it may continue to impact the people who come 00:22:38.85\00:22:41.53 and the church members who are involved. 00:22:41.56\00:22:44.02 Please pray that people will come 00:22:44.05\00:22:45.42 to know Jesus through this program. 00:22:45.45\00:22:47.95 Thank you, for your support of the mission 00:22:47.98\00:22:50.53 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:22:50.56\00:22:52.44 We often talk about 00:23:09.34\00:23:10.43 Global Mission pioneers on this program. 00:23:10.46\00:23:13.12 And over the years I had the privilege 00:23:13.15\00:23:14.71 of meeting many of these special people. 00:23:14.74\00:23:17.45 They are humble church members usually young people 00:23:17.48\00:23:20.36 who work with in their own cultures 00:23:20.39\00:23:22.09 to plant new groups of believers 00:23:22.12\00:23:24.19 in un-entered areas or people groups. 00:23:24.22\00:23:27.34 If you are interested in meeting some global mission pioneers 00:25:01.65\00:25:08.98 The music of the spheres 00:25:09.01\00:25:15.90 This is my Father's world 00:25:26.03\00:25:32.61 The birds their carols raise 00:25:32.64\00:25:39.37 The morning light, the lily white 00:25:39.40\00:25:47.21 Declare their maker's praise 00:25:47.24\00:25:53.42 This is my Father's world 00:25:53.45\00:26:00.46 I rest me in the thought 00:26:00.49\00:26:07.00 Of rocks and
