On today's program Pastor Jan Paulsen, 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.38 former president 00:00:03.41\00:00:04.44 of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:00:04.47\00:00:06.48 reflects on lessons he has learned. 00:00:06.51\00:00:09.17 We also meet the longest serving Adventists volunteer missionary 00:00:09.20\00:00:13.14 and we learn how to make a difference in our communities, 00:00:13.17\00:00:16.15 all that and much more coming up next 00:00:16.18\00:00:18.85 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:18.88\00:00:20.75 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:31.27\00:00:33.86 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:33.89\00:00:36.88 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, go. 00:00:36.91\00:00:41.98 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:42.01\00:00:46.95 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:46.98\00:00:50.86 Hello, I'm Gary Krause 00:00:56.54\00:00:57.88 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:57.91\00:01:00.70 Today we will be talking 00:01:00.73\00:01:01.76 with Dr. May-Ellen Colon about community services 00:01:01.79\00:01:05.58 and how Adventist small groups 00:01:05.61\00:01:07.30 are touching the lives of people around them. 00:01:07.33\00:01:10.69 We will also here what Pastor Jan Paulsen has learned 00:01:10.72\00:01:13.44 from a lifetime of service as a missionary, 00:01:13.47\00:01:16.61 educator and church leader. 00:01:16.64\00:01:19.20 And we will meet an incredible Australian 00:01:19.23\00:01:21.36 who is the longer serving Adventist volunteer missionary. 00:01:21.39\00:01:25.61 Over years that Helen Hall has affected 00:01:25.64\00:01:27.70 the lives of thousands of children 00:01:27.73\00:01:29.81 through teaching in refugee camps in Southeast Asia. 00:01:29.84\00:01:34.21 But, first let's travel to the country of Greece 00:01:34.24\00:01:37.05 and see the impact 00:01:37.08\00:01:38.28 that an international church has made on one man 00:01:38.31\00:01:41.56 from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 00:01:41.59\00:01:44.29 Greece is home to many significant events 00:01:47.43\00:01:50.13 throughout history, especially in the Bible. 00:01:50.16\00:01:54.05 The large city of Athens has evolved over time 00:01:54.08\00:01:57.42 but still holds on to its historic culture. 00:01:57.45\00:02:00.66 Today thousands of immigrants 00:02:00.69\00:02:02.93 from all over the world live in Greece. 00:02:02.96\00:02:06.02 My name is Michel Tiambo. 00:02:06.05\00:02:10.17 Michel is from the Democratic Republic of Congo. 00:02:10.20\00:02:14.21 He has lived in the city of Athens for some time now. 00:02:14.24\00:02:17.79 When he moved here he was not an Adventist. 00:02:17.82\00:02:20.87 Michel attended other churches 00:02:20.90\00:02:22.98 seeking what God really wanted for him. 00:02:23.01\00:02:26.01 He met an Adventist who invited him to church 00:02:26.04\00:02:28.69 and he believed what he heard. 00:02:28.72\00:02:31.02 I attended the church and I liked it 00:02:31.05\00:02:33.63 and I appreciated the way they preaching 00:02:33.66\00:02:36.21 and the way the people are 00:02:36.24\00:02:38.88 or they are doing in the church. 00:02:38.91\00:02:41.35 Now Michel plays an active role in reaching African immigrants 00:02:41.38\00:02:44.84 who are seeking the way he once was. 00:02:44.87\00:02:48.37 He is part of a Bible study that meets weekly. 00:02:48.40\00:02:51.40 They discuss various topics 00:02:51.43\00:02:53.31 and the people are focused on learning 00:02:53.34\00:02:54.87 all the lessons from the Bible. 00:02:54.90\00:02:57.69 Not all of the immigrants speak the same language 00:02:57.72\00:03:00.60 so Michel uses his gift of language 00:03:00.63\00:03:02.98 to translate the words of the pastor. 00:03:03.01\00:03:05.82 I am there with one of the elders of the church 00:03:05.85\00:03:08.38 and he is giving the Bible study 00:03:08.41\00:03:11.27 and I am translating for immigrant, 00:03:11.30\00:03:13.72 people from my country from Congo. 00:03:13.75\00:03:15.79 And After the service of the Bible studies, 00:03:15.82\00:03:18.55 we're sharing what we have food 00:03:18.58\00:03:20.28 and we enjoy together 00:03:20.31\00:03:21.94 under the fellowship-- the fellowship. 00:03:21.97\00:03:25.28 The Bible study transitions from studying the Bible 00:03:25.31\00:03:28.65 to sharing a meal together. 00:03:28.68\00:03:30.66 The visitors enjoy the opportunity for fellowship. 00:03:30.69\00:03:34.77 As you can see, the apartment is so small 00:03:34.80\00:03:37.35 they have to limit the number of people 00:03:37.38\00:03:39.06 who attend the meetings. 00:03:39.09\00:03:40.81 The church in Greece prays for a new building 00:03:40.84\00:03:43.17 that can be used to share Jesus with immigrants. 00:03:43.20\00:03:46.74 Their dream is to build an international church 00:03:46.77\00:03:49.13 where people from all over can come worship together. 00:03:49.16\00:03:52.63 Please pray for this group of eager followers. 00:03:52.66\00:03:55.64 That they may find a place to study without limits. 00:03:55.67\00:03:58.48 It's my pleasure to introduce my friend 00:04:03.79\00:04:06.18 and colleague Dr. May-Ellen Colon 00:04:06.21\00:04:08.45 who is the director of Adventist Community Services 00:04:08.48\00:04:12.46 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:04:12.49\00:04:14.49 May-Ellen, thank you for joining us. 00:04:14.52\00:04:15.84 Oh, it's so good to be here. 00:04:15.87\00:04:17.47 Community services, what do we mean by that? 00:04:17.50\00:04:20.55 It means, being salt and light in the community. 00:04:20.58\00:04:24.33 It means coming out of our fortress 00:04:24.36\00:04:28.08 and going out in making the community a better place 00:04:28.11\00:04:31.70 because our church is there. 00:04:31.73\00:04:33.61 And so it's all through the church 00:04:33.64\00:04:35.67 that is the part that I specifically work with. 00:04:35.70\00:04:39.96 To modify church is to be 00:04:39.99\00:04:41.51 transforming agents in the community. 00:04:41.54\00:04:43.81 Wonderful and we have talked about this many times 00:04:43.84\00:04:46.05 about how we need to as church members get off our pews 00:04:46.08\00:04:50.39 and actually engage in the community like Jesus did. 00:04:50.42\00:04:53.24 Now you get to see many examples 00:04:53.27\00:04:55.55 of Adventist community services in action. 00:04:55.58\00:04:58.63 Tell me about what you have seen in Korea? 00:04:58.66\00:05:02.00 Well, that's a-- that is quite a place. 00:05:02.03\00:05:05.01 A couple of years ago, 00:05:05.04\00:05:06.07 I did go to the Seoul Central Church. 00:05:06.10\00:05:08.01 I heard about it that it's doing amazing thing in the community 00:05:08.04\00:05:11.53 but it was wonderful to see at first hand. 00:05:11.56\00:05:14.53 And several years ago the pastor of that church 00:05:14.56\00:05:18.13 got signals from the community that, 00:05:18.16\00:05:20.22 that they could really use a vegetarian restaurant. 00:05:20.25\00:05:24.07 It's basically a Buddhist area, 00:05:24.10\00:05:26.38 across the street has big huge Buddhist temple 00:05:26.41\00:05:30.27 and then next to the church on the other corner 00:05:30.30\00:05:32.65 there is a store for Buddhist religious articles 00:05:32.68\00:05:37.48 and so pastor, the pastor of that church went around 00:05:37.51\00:05:42.16 and started talking to the community 00:05:42.19\00:05:43.89 and just to see to what extent 00:05:43.92\00:05:46.29 they would support this restaurant idea 00:05:46.32\00:05:49.87 that they actually got from the community. 00:05:49.90\00:05:52.31 And he went to the temple across the street 00:05:52.34\00:05:54.31 and they, they said we will love this. 00:05:54.34\00:05:58.58 When our people have lunch breaks they would, 00:05:58.61\00:06:01.36 they would love have a place to come to that 00:06:01.39\00:06:03.59 they feel comfortable eating the food. 00:06:03.62\00:06:06.30 And so they gave part of donation towards it 00:06:06.33\00:06:09.24 and you're running around yet. 00:06:09.27\00:06:10.66 Now, exactly what you are saying 00:06:10.69\00:06:11.94 there is a crucial part of community services 00:06:11.97\00:06:14.37 to actually go into the community 00:06:14.40\00:06:16.17 you find out what they want. 00:06:16.20\00:06:17.48 Yes, and ask and don't just-- Assume. 00:06:17.51\00:06:19.71 Don't just assume 00:06:19.74\00:06:20.96 you know, do ministry by crystal ball 00:06:20.99\00:06:24.96 you know, guessing. Okay. 00:06:24.99\00:06:26.70 This is the best way to take a guess, 00:06:26.73\00:06:28.90 the guess work out of your community service. 00:06:28.93\00:06:31.66 In fact the first successful the step 00:06:31.69\00:06:34.99 I should say, the first step in any venture 00:06:35.02\00:06:38.28 in the community is assessment. Yes. 00:06:38.31\00:06:40.66 Find don't guess what their needs are 00:06:40.69\00:06:42.46 and that's what he did and now he got supported 00:06:42.49\00:06:45.73 and it was not just the church's idea 00:06:45.76\00:06:48.16 and not just the church supporting it 00:06:48.19\00:06:49.82 but the community was involved too. Wonderful. 00:06:49.85\00:06:52.31 It was working with the community 00:06:52.34\00:06:54.07 on something they all agreed on. 00:06:54.10\00:06:56.30 And so to make a long story short, 00:06:56.33\00:06:58.54 the vegetarian restaurant was started 00:06:58.57\00:07:01.32 and you'll see some pictures of it. 00:07:01.35\00:07:02.84 It's a wonderful peace in the community. 00:07:02.87\00:07:05.99 People come there for lunch hour 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.19 and it's been going for several years now. 00:07:08.22\00:07:11.56 And then the-- I heard about 00:07:11.59\00:07:14.48 something else that was going on. 00:07:14.51\00:07:15.96 They did demographics in the area of the church. 00:07:15.99\00:07:18.48 That's another step in the assessment, 00:07:18.51\00:07:20.49 finding out what type of people, 00:07:20.52\00:07:22.04 what's the educational level, what's the ethnic level, 00:07:22.07\00:07:24.60 what are the ages et cetera 00:07:24.63\00:07:26.39 of the people in our communities. 00:07:26.42\00:07:29.25 And they did that and I find out 00:07:29.28\00:07:30.66 there is a large population 00:07:30.69\00:07:32.74 of senior citizens right around the church. 00:07:32.77\00:07:36.62 And so they, they started in response to this real issue. 00:07:36.65\00:07:41.93 They started a specific ministry 00:07:41.96\00:07:45.44 geared towards senior citizens. Perfect. 00:07:45.47\00:07:49.03 And so they have actually two church services. 00:07:49.06\00:07:53.05 Their ministry has grown so large 00:07:53.08\00:07:54.84 that they have two church services. 00:07:54.87\00:07:56.36 One up stairs for the-- 00:07:56.39\00:07:57.96 for everybody else that's consider themselves seniors. 00:07:57.99\00:08:03.29 And then they have another one down stairs 00:08:03.32\00:08:05.98 which is the geared senior citizens 00:08:06.01\00:08:08.50 and they-- I last heard they were 00:08:08.53\00:08:11.46 and there is a picture that you will see 00:08:11.49\00:08:12.90 there's about 300 attending 00:08:12.93\00:08:15.70 the service every week many of them from the community. 00:08:15.73\00:08:19.02 And after church each week, 00:08:19.05\00:08:20.80 they, they take them to the restaurant 00:08:20.83\00:08:23.50 and the part of building 00:08:23.53\00:08:24.68 and some of youth from the church help 00:08:24.71\00:08:26.47 to adopt a senior citizen, 00:08:26.50\00:08:28.69 you know, they help them with their food and their trays 00:08:28.72\00:08:30.95 and help them get up there and so forth. 00:08:30.98\00:08:32.76 And then they have health ministries 00:08:32.79\00:08:36.61 or health services. 00:08:36.64\00:08:38.21 Every week its little different emphasis, 00:08:38.24\00:08:40.03 one week they will give free immunizations 00:08:40.06\00:08:42.69 and other times they will have lectures 00:08:42.72\00:08:45.44 and doctors volunteer their time 00:08:45.47\00:08:47.59 and give them free consultation. 00:08:47.62\00:08:49.25 They give different kinds of treatments. 00:08:49.28\00:08:51.62 They even give free haircuts. Wow. 00:08:51.65\00:08:54.15 And this is an on going thing. 00:08:54.18\00:08:56.08 It's not just and event, 00:08:56.11\00:08:57.53 you know, that happens occasionally. 00:08:57.56\00:08:58.95 It's an on going ministry that they have going 00:08:58.98\00:09:03.18 and twice a year they, 00:09:03.21\00:09:06.23 they believe in the farming part which is what this is 00:09:06.26\00:09:09.65 and they believe in the reaping part. 00:09:09.68\00:09:12.32 The whole cycle and they have-- 00:09:12.35\00:09:14.55 they have a reaping meeting twice a year. 00:09:14.58\00:09:18.10 And the pastor there they have-- 00:09:18.13\00:09:19.99 they have a pastor specifically for the seniors 00:09:20.02\00:09:23.47 another pastor that focuses on the other, other ages. 00:09:23.50\00:09:28.50 And the pastor for the seniors said 00:09:28.53\00:09:30.04 that there's about 90 baptisms a year 00:09:30.07\00:09:32.44 for the whole church. 00:09:32.47\00:09:33.90 And 80 of them come from-- approximately 80 come 00:09:33.93\00:09:38.27 from the senior citizens congregation. 00:09:38.30\00:09:42.01 Amazing, isn't that, just one church. 00:09:42.04\00:09:43.91 Yes, yes and just starting-- 00:09:43.94\00:09:47.57 you know we can't do everything. Of course. 00:09:47.60\00:09:49.13 In any given community 00:09:49.16\00:09:50.34 but the things that we choose to focus on 00:09:50.37\00:09:52.83 may be its one or two things we will know it's relevant, 00:09:52.86\00:09:56.54 that is meaning a real need if we ask the community first. 00:09:56.57\00:10:00.15 And that's what they did 00:10:00.18\00:10:02.05 and they are growing their church from this ministry. 00:10:02.08\00:10:06.24 And so one part of this to find out 00:10:06.27\00:10:07.74 what the need are is and then to find out what gifts 00:10:07.77\00:10:10.43 and skills you have in the church 00:10:10.46\00:10:11.96 to be able to connect. 00:10:11.99\00:10:13.14 Yes, you have--you should assess the church members 00:10:13.17\00:10:16.30 what resources you have to offer and then assist the community 00:10:16.33\00:10:21.26 what they felt needs are. 00:10:21.29\00:10:22.83 And eventually when you meet their felt needs 00:10:22.86\00:10:26.15 you find out-- they find out many of them 00:10:26.18\00:10:29.39 that I have a-- a need I didn't feel 00:10:29.42\00:10:32.41 which is to know Jesus 00:10:32.44\00:10:34.18 and have the abundant life that He offers. 00:10:34.21\00:10:36.98 Yeah, meeting those other needs prepares 00:10:37.01\00:10:38.78 the way for them to come that realization. 00:10:38.81\00:10:41.51 Yeah, now the church members they do-- 00:10:41.54\00:10:44.60 you said there's a mentorship program 00:10:44.63\00:10:46.28 where the, where the young people adopt one of the older. 00:10:46.31\00:10:48.46 Yeah, that's what the pastor was saying, 00:10:48.49\00:10:50.66 that he had some of the young people get involved too 00:10:50.69\00:10:54.42 and its, its so exiting church to be there. 00:10:54.45\00:10:57.91 Oh, yeah, fantastic, 00:10:57.94\00:10:59.52 May-Ellen, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:10:59.55\00:11:02.00 That's an exciting story. 00:11:02.03\00:11:04.42 Viewers at home we, we sometimes think about church is being-- 00:11:04.45\00:11:07.71 as being a building as a place 00:11:07.74\00:11:10.40 where we go to meet once a week 00:11:10.43\00:11:12.51 but actually we are called to actually leave the pews 00:11:12.54\00:11:15.64 and actually be salt and light 00:11:15.67\00:11:17.33 as May-Ellen said in the community. 00:11:17.36\00:11:19.12 And I encourage you to find out ways 00:11:19.15\00:11:21.57 that you too can be involved in not just warming up a pew 00:11:21.60\00:11:25.44 but to actually be engage 00:11:25.47\00:11:26.89 connecting with the community like Jesus. 00:11:26.92\00:11:28.94 It is my pleasure and privilege 00:11:38.55\00:11:40.74 to welcome Pastor Jan Paulsen to the program, 00:11:40.77\00:11:44.61 former General Conference president. 00:11:44.64\00:11:47.22 Pastor Paulsen, glad you could join us. 00:11:47.25\00:11:48.64 Thank you, I'm happy we're with you here. 00:11:48.67\00:11:50.73 We are focusing on mission 00:11:50.76\00:11:52.30 and I know that you served as a missionary 00:11:52.33\00:11:54.37 for several years in West Africa. 00:11:54.40\00:11:57.98 I remember you telling a story about 00:11:58.01\00:12:00.85 you there at the time of war. 00:12:00.88\00:12:02.94 There was a lot strife, a lot of conflict 00:12:02.97\00:12:06.22 with in that context did you face any personal danger? 00:12:06.25\00:12:11.31 Well, yes. 00:12:11.34\00:12:12.54 When the battle front gets near to you, 00:12:12.57\00:12:14.90 you're not sheltered from the challenges of a civil war. 00:12:14.93\00:12:18.49 This was the civil war in Nigeria 00:12:18.52\00:12:20.03 known as the Biafran War 00:12:20.06\00:12:21.93 which ravaged the country in the mid 60s 00:12:21.96\00:12:25.97 and we lived in Nigeria then. 00:12:26.00\00:12:28.35 Through that period 00:12:28.38\00:12:29.44 I was during a particular critical year 00:12:29.47\00:12:32.08 when the battle front was very near to the college 00:12:32.11\00:12:34.75 only about 15-20 miles away from the college it self. 00:12:34.78\00:12:38.80 It was a battle between-- 00:12:38.83\00:12:41.93 the opposing forces were mainly the evils 00:12:41.96\00:12:43.98 from the east and forces from the north. 00:12:44.01\00:12:48.52 Not the western Nigerian's the-- 00:12:48.55\00:12:51.03 the Yoruba people of Western Nigeria 00:12:51.06\00:12:53.55 were not really as such engage as much in the war. 00:12:53.58\00:12:56.32 So it was people from the North and the-- 00:12:56.35\00:12:59.85 and the evils in the east. 00:12:59.88\00:13:02.36 We had a number of students who where Igbo's. 00:13:02.39\00:13:07.71 The value of education was so high 00:13:07.74\00:13:09.63 that even though the battle front 00:13:09.66\00:13:11.00 was coming better near to them. 00:13:11.03\00:13:13.45 They may send their families, 00:13:13.48\00:13:15.90 their wife and children back to their country 00:13:15.93\00:13:19.54 but they themselves would stay. 00:13:19.57\00:13:21.90 And I remember one particular incident. 00:13:21.93\00:13:24.01 You know, the college had a bakery 00:13:24.04\00:13:25.73 which delivered made and delivered the best breads 00:13:25.76\00:13:28.13 you could buy in the country to both the Lagos and Ibadan 00:13:28.16\00:13:32.21 and we had two bakery vans 00:13:32.24\00:13:34.64 which would load up every morning. 00:13:34.67\00:13:36.20 Two drivers would go in a different direction. 00:13:36.23\00:13:37.96 The one, who would drive to, to Ibadan was an Igbo driver 00:13:37.99\00:13:44.60 and I can remember one early morning at 5 O'clock 00:13:44.63\00:13:47.26 he came up to my house and he said to me pastor, 00:13:47.29\00:13:51.54 I hear there is much trouble on the road. 00:13:51.57\00:13:53.61 I'm afraid to go by myself can you go with me? 00:13:53.64\00:13:56.86 So, I said yes, I will go with you. 00:13:56.89\00:13:59.14 So we had the van loaded up, 00:13:59.17\00:14:01.83 we put in an extra box of bread 00:14:01.86\00:14:05.62 because we would-- we knew we would 00:14:05.65\00:14:07.33 go through military check points 00:14:07.36\00:14:09.62 and there is a good thing, you know, to have some-- 00:14:09.65\00:14:11.87 to have an extra loaf of bread to give to the soldiers. 00:14:11.90\00:14:14.05 You know, there is lot of religion 00:14:14.08\00:14:15.68 in the loaf of bread and it helped. 00:14:15.71\00:14:20.22 So we did--we went go through the check points, 00:14:20.25\00:14:23.44 the official check points they were at, 00:14:23.47\00:14:25.32 they were always be at certain specific points I knew of. 00:14:25.35\00:14:28.11 Two or three check points before we got into Ibadan. 00:14:28.14\00:14:31.40 Delivered the bread in Ibadan and we are heading back home. 00:14:31.43\00:14:34.50 The van was empty. 00:14:34.53\00:14:37.54 We had heard stories about certain vigilante group 00:14:37.57\00:14:41.31 with people from the north. 00:14:41.34\00:14:43.94 Soldiers from the North 00:14:43.97\00:14:45.37 who would all of a sudden appear on the road, 00:14:45.40\00:14:48.09 stop vehicles and check the ethnicity 00:14:48.12\00:14:53.02 or check the ratio of the occupants of the car. 00:14:53.05\00:14:59.30 And as we were coming on the way home, 00:14:59.33\00:15:01.17 we came around this sort of a slow lazy bend in the road. 00:15:01.20\00:15:04.89 And we saw half a dozen men 00:15:04.92\00:15:09.55 with the automatic weapons stopping every vehicle passing 00:15:09.58\00:15:14.28 and they would just ask-- 00:15:14.31\00:15:16.28 they spoke English very, very poorly 00:15:16.31\00:15:18.96 and they would just ask of the occupant 00:15:18.99\00:15:21.92 which nation meaning which tribe? 00:15:21.95\00:15:25.44 They stopped ours asked which nation, 00:15:25.47\00:15:29.09 they really didn't need to ask for the tribal marks 00:15:29.12\00:15:32.25 of my driver gave it away before we said them. 00:15:32.28\00:15:34.80 They said they knew he was a Igbo 00:15:34.83\00:15:38.07 and they was with they were drunk 00:15:38.10\00:15:41.23 and they could speak very little English 00:15:41.26\00:15:44.05 they were clearly had their 00:15:44.08\00:15:45.97 more than fair share of bomb wine 00:15:46.00\00:15:48.96 and they were waving these automatic weapons around 00:15:48.99\00:15:52.22 and, and pointing it inside through the window into the van. 00:15:52.25\00:15:57.77 And so they said to my driver, come out. 00:15:57.80\00:16:01.00 And I opened the door on my side to come out. 00:16:01.03\00:16:03.10 No, no, they said, no stay. They want me to stay. 00:16:03.13\00:16:06.39 I didn't want my driver to go. 00:16:06.42\00:16:08.10 I knew what would happen to him if they took him out. 00:16:08.13\00:16:10.44 There were too many stories 00:16:10.47\00:16:12.36 about Igbo's who had been plucked out of the cars 00:16:12.39\00:16:15.38 and who's bodies were found by the roadside. 00:16:15.41\00:16:18.80 So, I said to him stay here. 00:16:18.83\00:16:21.79 So, I began to talk to the one I thought was the leader. 00:16:21.82\00:16:28.95 And for the next 15-20 minutes I just talked to him. 00:16:28.98\00:16:36.46 Afterwards even immediately 00:16:36.49\00:16:37.91 after I had no recollection of what I said to him. 00:16:37.94\00:16:41.82 None what so ever, but the others they, 00:16:41.85\00:16:46.97 they lowered their weapons and they came over to the van 00:16:47.00\00:16:52.06 and they stood there quietly listening to us. 00:16:52.09\00:16:56.33 As I said I had no idea what I talked to him about. 00:16:56.36\00:17:00.22 But I felt I knew to talk and may be he will listen to, 00:17:00.25\00:17:04.24 may be something can be said, 00:17:04.27\00:17:06.28 may be I will still get through 00:17:06.31\00:17:07.48 although they understood very little. 00:17:07.51\00:17:10.24 After about 15- 20 minutes he said to my driver. 00:17:10.27\00:17:15.18 I'll let you go but only 00:17:15.21\00:17:17.73 because your master talked so well. 00:17:17.76\00:17:20.81 If there ever was a case of speaking in tongues 00:17:20.84\00:17:23.53 this is it. 00:17:23.56\00:17:25.48 Because I'm absolutely convinced it was the Holy Spirit 00:17:25.51\00:17:29.77 who took the words I was trying to communicate 00:17:29.80\00:17:32.99 about the mission we were involved in. 00:17:33.02\00:17:36.76 And that we were there for the good of the people 00:17:36.79\00:17:40.68 that we had no other agenda accept Christ loved the people 00:17:40.71\00:17:44.41 and serve them 00:17:44.44\00:17:46.18 and I think the Holy Spirit was able to take my feeble effort 00:17:46.21\00:17:49.86 and bring it into the mind 00:17:49.89\00:17:51.14 and understanding of these half-drunk vigilantes. Wow. 00:17:51.17\00:17:58.53 My life of course, you are exposed 00:17:58.56\00:18:01.21 but I was more concerned for my Igbo driver. 00:18:01.24\00:18:05.48 Yeah, Dr. Paulsen, thank you 00:18:05.51\00:18:07.84 so much for sharing that story with us. 00:18:07.87\00:18:10.71 Viewers at home, even today 00:18:10.74\00:18:13.40 missionaries face various types of danger. 00:18:13.43\00:18:16.02 Please continue to remember them in your prayers 00:18:16.05\00:18:18.82 as they labor in various parts of the world 00:18:18.85\00:18:21.76 under difficult challenging and trying circumstances. 00:18:21.79\00:18:25.51 If you had just a roof over your head 00:18:45.46\00:18:47.57 and enough space, you can work 00:18:47.60\00:18:50.79 and the kids can learn. 00:18:50.82\00:18:52.32 I get a great deal of pleasure 00:19:01.54\00:19:02.95 when I see kids who have come from a family 00:19:02.98\00:19:05.38 where no one's ever been to school 00:19:05.41\00:19:07.77 and that they are the first ones to go through the grade six, 00:19:07.80\00:19:10.86 then they are the first ones to finish year twelve 00:19:10.89\00:19:13.22 and then they are the first ones to go to college. 00:19:13.25\00:19:17.56 Adventist Volunteer Services or AVS is an opportunity 00:19:17.59\00:19:22.04 for people to serve in a mission setting globally. 00:19:22.07\00:19:25.42 This can include a huge variety of jobs. 00:19:25.45\00:19:30.35 Helen Hall is an AVS worker, originally from Australia, 00:19:30.38\00:19:34.62 now working in an Adventist school in Asia. 00:19:34.65\00:19:37.48 She runs the school that ranges from grades one to twelve. 00:19:37.51\00:19:41.25 Her dedication and passion to the job 00:19:41.28\00:19:43.50 has allowed hundreds of children to graduate 00:19:43.53\00:19:46.22 and move on to opportunities 00:19:46.25\00:19:47.97 they might never have had otherwise. 00:19:48.00\00:19:50.02 (Speaking in foreign language) 00:19:50.05\00:19:55.41 The mission at this school is for students 00:19:58.01\00:20:00.04 to receive a quality Adventist education, 00:20:00.07\00:20:02.47 both academically and spiritually. 00:20:02.50\00:20:05.28 But most of the students here are not Christians 00:20:05.31\00:20:08.56 making it hard to reach them spiritually. 00:20:08.59\00:20:11.99 It's very difficult for Buddhist to become a Christian. 00:20:12.02\00:20:16.10 And if they do it too quickly 00:20:16.13\00:20:18.62 then it causes big problems in their family 00:20:18.65\00:20:22.55 but if they wait and go little more slowly 00:20:22.58\00:20:25.22 then they can get by. 00:20:25.25\00:20:28.05 Helen's experience has taught her what works 00:20:28.08\00:20:30.45 and what doesn't work in reaching the students. 00:20:30.48\00:20:33.08 She has had quite a bit of success 00:20:33.11\00:20:34.70 in teaching her students about Jesus. 00:20:34.73\00:20:39.63 Well, in a normal day 00:20:39.66\00:20:41.40 we try to get everybody worship by 8:30 or 8:20 00:20:41.43\00:20:45.32 and then we just go through the classes. 00:20:45.35\00:20:48.08 We've got a lot of teachers here 00:20:54.99\00:20:56.54 who when they came to us the students, 00:20:56.57\00:20:58.88 none of them were from Christian homes. 00:20:58.91\00:21:02.07 And they are wonderful workers now. 00:21:02.10\00:21:06.62 After students graduate 00:21:06.65\00:21:08.26 they will usually go on to university. 00:21:08.29\00:21:10.70 After university graduation 00:21:10.73\00:21:12.64 some students agreed to come back to the school 00:21:12.67\00:21:15.08 and work a certain number of years. 00:21:15.11\00:21:17.49 This is how Helen is guaranteed workers 00:21:17.52\00:21:19.66 to keep the school running. 00:21:19.69\00:21:21.04 She teaches right along with the other teachers. 00:21:32.27\00:21:35.03 Students pay close attentions to the valuable lesson 00:21:35.06\00:21:37.92 she gives in a variety of topics including sciences, 00:21:37.95\00:21:41.51 English, math and the Bible. 00:21:41.54\00:21:44.44 Attu is a graduate from Helen's school. 00:21:59.43\00:22:02.43 He now works in villages telling people about Jesus. 00:22:02.46\00:22:05.93 Attu has helped start multiple churches in these villages. 00:22:05.96\00:22:09.63 The villagers love hearing stories from the Bible. 00:22:09.66\00:22:12.77 Most of them are hearing the name of Jesus 00:22:12.80\00:22:15.15 for the first time. 00:22:15.18\00:22:16.59 Attu knows that God has blessed him 00:22:26.03\00:22:28.19 with the opportunity to do this. 00:22:28.22\00:22:30.67 He gained a strong grasp on the Bible 00:22:30.70\00:22:32.61 while at Helen's school 00:22:32.64\00:22:33.67 and is now passing on his knowledge to others. 00:22:33.70\00:22:36.84 He is just one of many graduates 00:22:36.87\00:22:38.42 using what they have learned in school for God's glory. 00:22:38.45\00:22:41.48 Despite all the success from this school, 00:22:48.12\00:22:50.30 the challenges are big. 00:22:50.33\00:22:52.68 In addition to religious barriers, 00:22:52.71\00:22:54.82 things such as financial resources, 00:22:54.85\00:22:57.08 shortage of education materials 00:22:57.11\00:22:58.89 and even lack of space are constant challenges. 00:22:58.92\00:23:02.27 But when these challenges surface, 00:23:02.30\00:23:04.27 Helen looks to someone she knows 00:23:04.30\00:23:05.86 can pull through the situation. 00:23:05.89\00:23:08.63 When you get this, this courage the Lord sends us 00:23:08.66\00:23:11.12 some blessing or something 00:23:11.15\00:23:12.51 and then you know that He's still with us. 00:23:12.54\00:23:15.61 No man has got wisdom enough to know what to do. 00:23:15.64\00:23:19.17 Only God can know 00:23:19.20\00:23:20.29 and God is just how we should go. 00:23:20.32\00:23:24.13 As you can see the work of an AVS worker 00:23:24.16\00:23:27.32 has the power to change lives. 00:23:27.35\00:23:30.25 They can teach people about Jesus 00:23:30.28\00:23:32.46 and set them on the right path. 00:23:32.49\00:23:34.99 Helen is just one of many AVS workers 00:23:35.02\00:23:37.69 around the world facing the challenge of mission daily. 00:23:37.72\00:23:41.77 Please pray for these workers. 00:23:41.80\00:23:44.10 And thank you for supporting the mission 00:23:44.13\00:23:46.51
