Young people involved in one year 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.62 in mission in New York City 00:00:02.65\00:00:04.48 and the president of the General Conference 00:00:04.51\00:00:06.26 of Seventh-day Adventist, 00:00:06.29\00:00:08.13 that and much more coming up next on 00:00:08.16\00:00:10.57 "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:10.60\00:00:12.37 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:22.92\00:00:25.44 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:25.47\00:00:28.39 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, "Go. 00:00:28.42\00:00:33.58 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love." 00:00:33.61\00:00:38.50 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:38.53\00:00:42.50 Hello, I'm Gary Krause and welcome to 00:00:47.61\00:00:49.43 "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:49.46\00:00:51.36 Thanks for joining us as we look at front line mission 00:00:51.39\00:00:54.16 around the world. 00:00:54.19\00:00:55.78 Today we'll be talking to Pastor Ted Wilson 00:00:55.81\00:00:58.31 about centers of influence and how they help 00:00:58.34\00:01:01.70 advance mission in the major cities of the world. 00:01:01.73\00:01:05.55 We'll also talk with Kleber Goncalves, 00:01:05.58\00:01:07.63 senior pastor of a rapidly growing church 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.48 in the heart of Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil 00:01:10.51\00:01:13.86 and one of the largest cities in the world. 00:01:13.89\00:01:16.61 Dr. Goncalves also heads up with Global Mission Center 00:01:16.64\00:01:19.59 for Secular and Postmodern Studies. 00:01:19.62\00:01:22.81 But first up, let's find out more about young people 00:01:22.84\00:01:25.87 from around the world who spent one year 00:01:25.90\00:01:28.35 ministering in New York City. 00:01:28.38\00:01:30.65 It is hard because it was to everybody is more open. 00:01:36.01\00:01:39.35 They are friendly, you can talk to someone 00:01:39.38\00:01:41.30 in the bus, in the subway. 00:01:41.33\00:01:43.34 And then you can try to make connection and say something. 00:01:43.37\00:01:47.14 It's my first time when I live with someone, 00:01:47.17\00:01:50.91 who I don't know really. 00:01:50.94\00:01:52.24 Sometimes it's difficult 00:01:52.27\00:01:53.32 because you need like your own space. 00:01:53.35\00:01:55.73 I try to be humble, I try to be patient 00:01:55.76\00:01:59.22 to understand them more. 00:01:59.25\00:02:01.82 You are having to navigate through all kinds of individuals 00:02:01.85\00:02:05.66 coming with the different culture beliefs 00:02:05.69\00:02:07.88 and cultural ideas and it's made me 00:02:07.91\00:02:11.06 a little bit more patient. 00:02:11.09\00:02:13.38 It's different back home because 00:02:13.41\00:02:15.07 you can see the needs of people 00:02:15.10\00:02:16.99 because you're familiar with them 00:02:17.02\00:02:18.64 and you know the circumstances back home. 00:02:18.67\00:02:21.32 And yeah, it's hard to read people, 00:02:21.35\00:02:22.95 it's hard to understand them. 00:02:22.98\00:02:25.11 People are very busy and maybe 00:02:25.14\00:02:27.63 we haven't had a chance to connect with the people 00:02:27.66\00:02:30.25 that we really need to connect to. 00:02:30.28\00:02:33.13 I understand that God can't depend on feelings 00:02:33.16\00:02:36.68 but I like to feel my God when I look at the sky, 00:02:36.71\00:02:40.35 when I see nature but here it's more difficult 00:02:40.38\00:02:43.08 because big buildings and so peace of-- 00:02:43.11\00:02:47.41 a little peace of sky and so I can't see stars here 00:02:47.44\00:02:51.53 because big street and all the lights. 00:02:51.56\00:02:55.53 Need to get it with all these people, 00:02:55.56\00:02:57.75 it is not always easy. It involves challenges. 00:02:57.78\00:03:01.91 And it teaches you patience. 00:03:01.94\00:03:04.59 When God, He brought me here, 00:03:04.62\00:03:06.66 in the beginning I was struggling 00:03:06.69\00:03:08.68 if I really could go here because I didn't feel 00:03:08.71\00:03:11.71 capable of doing this project. 00:03:11.74\00:03:14.41 It has been challenging to come 00:03:14.44\00:03:16.36 and just leave it in God's hands. 00:03:16.39\00:03:18.56 But God, He's trying to show me really that. 00:03:18.59\00:03:21.25 In my weakness He is strong 00:03:21.28\00:03:22.81 and to trust Him with all the things 00:03:22.84\00:03:25.00 that will happen here that He will work. 00:03:25.03\00:03:26.82 First I came here and I thought like 00:03:32.67\00:03:35.17 I will not grow spiritually as I was growing 00:03:35.20\00:03:38.18 between in my work in Lebanon. 00:03:38.21\00:03:40.57 But when we started the real work, 00:03:40.60\00:03:43.18 how we go to disaster area, how we help the homeless. 00:03:43.21\00:03:47.18 I see like myself like God taking me down, 00:03:47.21\00:03:49.65 down to communicate with these less level of people 00:03:49.68\00:03:52.33 in order like to show me all the kind of people. 00:03:52.36\00:03:55.79 In general, the call to ministry is 00:03:55.82\00:03:57.59 even more within me. 00:03:57.62\00:04:00.36 So there's so much that we can do, 00:04:00.39\00:04:02.92 so many ways that we can reach our world. 00:04:02.95\00:04:06.54 And it's just a reminder and also you know, 00:04:06.57\00:04:09.86 to go forth and to do even more you know, 00:04:09.89\00:04:12.43 I just keeping a broad way even here in America. 00:04:12.46\00:04:15.22 I've seen God answer prayers. 00:04:15.25\00:04:17.23 I've seen God provide me 00:04:17.26\00:04:19.10 comfort especially being away from home 00:04:19.13\00:04:21.50 and away from my daughter. 00:04:21.53\00:04:22.99 We have different personalities 00:04:23.02\00:04:25.09 and different cultural backgrounds 00:04:25.12\00:04:26.79 but I am just amazed 00:04:26.82\00:04:28.19 that because of the one same faith, 00:04:28.22\00:04:31.23 we can work like this together. 00:04:31.26\00:04:33.72 One of my favorite verses that's from Isaiah 6:8, 00:04:33.75\00:04:36.97 where God says, you know, "Whom shall I send? 00:04:37.00\00:04:39.09 And who will go?" And he answers, 00:04:39.12\00:04:41.38 "Here am I. Lord, send me." 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.02 And I feel that, that's my call. 00:04:43.05\00:04:45.51 My prayer is, God I want to be 00:04:45.54\00:04:47.33 a Christian who makes You happy. 00:04:47.36\00:04:49.63 Wherever You lead me, I'll follow. 00:04:49.66\00:04:51.94 I just want to fully dedicate everyday 00:04:51.97\00:04:55.05 and I want to do something for You. 00:04:55.08\00:04:56.97 (Speaking in foreign language) 00:04:57.00\00:04:58.67 God help me a lot to like to brick myself 00:05:14.24\00:05:17.15 and to know whose really Jesus is 00:05:17.18\00:05:19.07 who washed the feet of His disciples 00:05:19.10\00:05:21.23 and who ate with them and who sat with the sinners. 00:05:21.26\00:05:24.14 This just means, helped me a lot to be more humble. 00:05:24.17\00:05:27.59 (Speaking in foreign language) 00:05:27.62\00:05:29.23 Everyday had been a blessing, everyday, everyday. 00:05:40.08\00:05:42.94 The more I see the challenge the more 00:05:42.97\00:05:45.72 I realize that I am unworthy and I need God and only Him, 00:05:45.75\00:05:50.84 that is sufficient. 00:05:50.87\00:05:52.03 It's my pleasure to welcome my friend 00:06:05.74\00:06:07.52 and colleague Pastor Kleber Goncalves 00:06:07.55\00:06:10.24 who is a pastor in the heart of Sao Paulo, in Brazil. 00:06:10.27\00:06:15.81 Welcome, Kleber. Thank you so much, Gary. 00:06:15.84\00:06:17.55 Now, tell me about Sao Paulo. 00:06:17.58\00:06:19.28 I've flown over Sao Paulo 00:06:19.31\00:06:22.80 and it seems like it takes forever to get over the city. 00:06:22.83\00:06:25.42 It's a huge sprawling city. 00:06:25.45\00:06:26.93 What sort of size are we looking at? 00:06:26.96\00:06:28.38 Well, its amazing Gary, Sao Paulo has grown best 00:06:28.41\00:06:31.01 in two or three decades. 00:06:31.04\00:06:33.18 Right now we are approaching 00:06:33.21\00:06:34.34 two million people in metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. 00:06:34.37\00:06:37.10 Right in the very heart but the whole area 00:06:37.13\00:06:40.06 is not more than 2 million. 00:06:40.09\00:06:41.51 Yeah, close to, close to 20 million people. 00:06:41.54\00:06:43.83 Oh, sorry, I thought you said 2 million people, 20 million. 00:06:43.86\00:06:45.70 I was gonna say, it shrunk itself in. 00:06:45.73\00:06:48.77 So and your church that you planted is where? 00:06:48.80\00:06:53.88 It's right in Downtown. 00:06:53.91\00:06:55.37 We are one block away from Avenida Paulista Avenue, 00:06:55.40\00:06:59.59 the heart of the financial center. 00:06:59.62\00:07:02.26 Oh, not alone-- not only from Sao Paulo 00:07:02.29\00:07:04.56 but for the whole South America. 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.99 So it's a huge challenge for us. 00:07:07.02\00:07:08.37 Just try to mingle with that type of people 00:07:08.40\00:07:11.36 who live around us, the community around us. 00:07:11.39\00:07:13.41 Yeah, now the Adventist church of course, 00:07:13.44\00:07:16.00 I am guessing has hundreds of churches 00:07:16.03\00:07:17.79 in Sao Paulo but they tend to be more 00:07:17.82\00:07:21.44 on the outskirts or certainly not reaching 00:07:21.47\00:07:24.11 the sort of demographic where you are. 00:07:24.14\00:07:25.83 Just for you to have an idea, 00:07:25.86\00:07:27.87 Sao Paulo has right now close to 600 churches 00:07:27.90\00:07:30.86 in these among these 20 million people. 00:07:30.89\00:07:33.76 Six hundred Adventist churches? Yeah. 00:07:33.79\00:07:35.65 Wow. That's in three conferences. 00:07:35.68\00:07:38.10 But the challenge for us is how to plant 00:07:38.13\00:07:40.44 churches in Downtown. 00:07:40.47\00:07:42.30 In the past 47 years we have not been able to start 00:07:42.33\00:07:46.58 church plants in that area. 00:07:46.61\00:07:48.66 So one of our Semente was one of the projects 00:07:48.69\00:07:50.79 focusing specifically in that geographic area. 00:07:50.82\00:07:54.46 So that's the name of your church, 00:07:54.49\00:07:55.64 Nova Semente which I happen to known 00:07:55.67\00:07:57.98 it means New Seed. I like it. Okay. 00:07:58.01\00:08:01.59 So we started almost nine years ago 00:08:01.62\00:08:04.16 with the church plants trying to change a little bit the way 00:08:04.19\00:08:08.09 we look at the urban challenge. 00:08:08.12\00:08:10.92 One of the challenges for us is how to build bridges 00:08:10.95\00:08:14.20 with that type of profile of people 00:08:14.23\00:08:17.55 because they have different ancestors 00:08:17.58\00:08:19.14 and different way of looking at life. 00:08:19.17\00:08:21.00 Now you say that for 47 years 00:08:21.03\00:08:24.17 there have been no church plant there, 00:08:24.20\00:08:25.80 but you got hundreds in the city. 00:08:25.83\00:08:29.35 Why is it so hard to plant a church in that area? 00:08:29.38\00:08:33.67 Well, I think one of the challenges for us is, 00:08:33.70\00:08:36.51 we are looking for quick ways of doing things. 00:08:36.54\00:08:40.15 And a project like this takes time, 00:08:40.18\00:08:42.82 its effort, takes people 00:08:42.85\00:08:46.00 who are really willing to change the way 00:08:46.03\00:08:47.88 they do church, in the way 00:08:47.91\00:08:49.71 they experience church in order to reach people. 00:08:49.74\00:08:52.30 So I think this hurry sometimes we have to do things, 00:08:52.33\00:08:56.00 you know, very fast way does not help us 00:08:56.03\00:08:59.15 that much in that regard. 00:08:59.18\00:09:01.36 Describe the people in the community around 00:09:01.39\00:09:03.84 where the church is. 00:09:03.87\00:09:04.90 Well, right now we are-- 00:09:04.93\00:09:06.52 actually it's a very heterogeneous, 00:09:06.55\00:09:09.26 that's urban life. 00:09:09.29\00:09:11.26 You cannot simply say well, 00:09:11.29\00:09:12.32 this is the type of people have in there. 00:09:12.35\00:09:14.45 We can find any type of person in there. 00:09:14.48\00:09:16.86 But usually in the blocks around us 00:09:16.89\00:09:19.87 we see people who are between 35 to 55 years old, 00:09:19.90\00:09:26.62 people who have kids. 00:09:26.65\00:09:29.72 Usually they are happy with their jobs, 00:09:29.75\00:09:32.45 they are happy with their lives. 00:09:32.48\00:09:34.70 They don't feel they need a church. 00:09:34.73\00:09:36.58 That's pretty much what we have around us. 00:09:36.61\00:09:39.79 So that's quite a challenge. 00:09:39.82\00:09:40.85 So you started nine years ago 00:09:40.88\00:09:43.01 and what did you do differently to 00:09:43.04\00:09:46.46 what you would have done 00:09:46.49\00:09:47.52 if you'd been a pastor at in some rural area? 00:09:47.55\00:09:50.35 Well, at the beginning I was concerned 00:09:50.38\00:09:54.22 to view a new vision for church members 00:09:54.25\00:09:58.15 and the way they can really get involved in ministry. 00:09:58.18\00:10:02.27 Because pretty much what we face is people, 00:10:02.30\00:10:04.55 I mean, church members they come to church, 00:10:04.58\00:10:06.34 they are there just to see well, 00:10:06.37\00:10:07.51 what this church has to serve me. 00:10:07.54\00:10:10.81 To serve me. Yeah. That's the case. 00:10:10.84\00:10:13.46 We need to change this attitude. 00:10:13.49\00:10:15.60 So at the very beginning I was concerned 00:10:15.63\00:10:17.63 with this type of vision, you see. 00:10:17.66\00:10:19.43 How can we serve this church? 00:10:19.46\00:10:21.09 How can we serve this community? 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.19 So we built the church around this through discipleship 00:10:23.22\00:10:27.23 and through the concept of mission. 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.24 What is mission all about? 00:10:29.27\00:10:30.60 Are we here to be served 00:10:30.63\00:10:32.97 or are we here to fulfill God's mission to reach out, 00:10:33.00\00:10:37.03 to make disciples, wherever we are. 00:10:37.06\00:10:39.65 So that's pretty much one of the differences 00:10:39.68\00:10:42.27 in the context we are right now. Yeah. 00:10:42.30\00:10:45.10 Now you actually in the introduction, 00:10:45.13\00:10:48.49 I say that you are a person 00:10:48.52\00:10:51.11 who preaches what you practice. 00:10:51.14\00:10:53.72 You not just practice but you preach. 00:10:53.75\00:10:55.35 You preach what you practice 00:10:55.38\00:10:56.57 because you researched post-modernism 00:10:56.60\00:11:00.32 for your Ph.D. thesis, 00:11:00.35\00:11:01.81 you looked at ministry to post-modern 00:11:01.84\00:11:03.97 and you saw that the urb-- 00:11:04.00\00:11:05.25 I mean, I've looked at your thesis 00:11:05.28\00:11:06.45 and the urban areas are actually the place 00:11:06.48\00:11:09.06 where post-modernism flourishes. 00:11:09.09\00:11:11.00 It's the home of post-modernism. 00:11:11.03\00:11:13.48 So you've planted a church 00:11:13.51\00:11:15.32 to reach these people nine years ago. 00:11:15.35\00:11:17.51 How-- what's happened? 00:11:17.54\00:11:19.24 Well, it's been a wonderful experience. 00:11:19.27\00:11:21.65 Nine years ago we started the church with 16 people, 00:11:21.68\00:11:25.58 8 families and the Lord has blessed us 00:11:25.61\00:11:28.25 beyond our wildest dreams. 00:11:28.28\00:11:31.08 And right now Gary, 00:11:31.11\00:11:32.14 we are having an average of close to 1,200 people 00:11:32.17\00:11:35.68 attending the church, four services on Sabbath. 00:11:35.71\00:11:37.91 We just started last weekend our fourth service. 00:11:37.94\00:11:41.60 Two in afternoon and two in the morning 00:11:41.63\00:11:43.95 in order to reach the members we are having because we-- 00:11:43.98\00:11:47.45 as I have mentioned to you 00:11:47.48\00:11:48.61 too many Adventist people live in Sao Paulo. 00:11:48.64\00:11:50.86 So they want to know this church, 00:11:50.89\00:11:52.52 they come to visit and it's a concern to us. 00:11:52.55\00:11:55.15 They are always welcome 00:11:55.18\00:11:56.24 but they-- we want to make sure 00:11:56.27\00:11:58.08 they understand why we are there. 00:11:58.11\00:12:00.63 So those who are trying to simply come 00:12:00.66\00:12:02.66 and fill the seats, they need to understand 00:12:02.69\00:12:05.71 we have a purpose as church. 00:12:05.74\00:12:07.31 At the same time we are receiving hundreds of visitors. 00:12:07.34\00:12:10.77 Right now we have close to 200 people 00:12:10.80\00:12:13.11 willing to study the Bible. 00:12:13.14\00:12:14.36 Fantastic, Kleber. 00:12:14.39\00:12:15.71 Thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:12:15.74\00:12:17.55 My pleasure. 00:12:17.58\00:12:18.71 And viewers at home, please pray for Pastor Kleber 00:12:18.74\00:12:22.19 and his team in Sao Paulo. 00:12:22.22\00:12:24.93 And if you want to find out more about the church 00:12:24.96\00:12:27.79 that is growing rapidly, you can go to novasemente.org. 00:12:27.82\00:12:32.41 That's novasemente.org. 00:12:32.44\00:12:38.00 And Dr. Goncalves is also the director 00:12:38.03\00:12:40.79 of the Global Mission Center 00:12:40.82\00:12:42.98 for Secular and Postmodern Studies. 00:12:43.01\00:12:44.67 And to find out more about that, 00:12:44.70\00:12:46.70 you can go to secularandpostmodern.org, 00:12:46.73\00:12:53.23 secularandpostmodernstudies.org, right? 00:12:53.26\00:12:56.14 Sorry, secularandpostmodernstudies.org. 00:12:56.17\00:12:58.44 Please look for opportunities 00:12:58.47\00:13:00.92 where you too can be a minister in your community. 00:13:00.95\00:13:04.15 It's my pleasure to introduce our guest Pastor Ted Wilson 00:13:51.24\00:13:54.56 who is president of the General Conference 00:13:54.59\00:13:56.61 of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:13:56.64\00:13:58.26 Pastor Wilson, thank you for joining us. 00:13:58.29\00:13:59.94 Thank you, Gary. 00:13:59.97\00:14:01.05 I am interested to hear more about 00:14:01.08\00:14:02.71 what the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:14:02.74\00:14:04.55 is doing in mission to the cities and why. 00:14:04.58\00:14:07.84 Why is there such a central emphasis of your leadership? 00:14:07.87\00:14:11.80 Well, let me just began 00:14:11.83\00:14:13.15 by painting a picture in our minds. 00:14:13.18\00:14:17.28 Jesus on His triumphal entry to Jerusalem, 00:14:17.31\00:14:21.70 people just proclaiming Him the son of David, Hosanna, 00:14:21.73\00:14:27.60 Hosanna, palm branches weaving, 00:14:27.63\00:14:29.68 people throwing their garments in front of Him. 00:14:29.71\00:14:33.31 He's riding on a humble donkey 00:14:33.34\00:14:36.11 and yet they are treating Him as a king, and He is a king. 00:14:36.14\00:14:41.08 And yet things would change dramatically 00:14:41.11\00:14:43.42 within just a few hours. 00:14:43.45\00:14:45.83 But He comes to the brow 00:14:45.86\00:14:47.20 of the hill overlooking Jerusalem 00:14:47.23\00:14:50.23 and all of this excitement, 00:14:50.26\00:14:51.68 you think He would be happy and joyous and He stops. 00:14:51.71\00:14:55.89 And everybody stops and they kind of look 00:14:55.92\00:14:58.92 and here Jesus is just staring at the city. 00:14:58.95\00:15:03.08 And then in Luke 19:41 it says, 00:15:03.11\00:15:09.50 "He beheld the city and wept over it." 00:15:09.53\00:15:13.94 And as you see that scene in your eye, 00:15:13.97\00:15:17.43 your mind's eye you see Jesus standing there 00:15:17.46\00:15:20.52 while He's sitting on the donkey 00:15:20.55\00:15:21.90 and He starts to cry. 00:15:21.93\00:15:24.53 And, you know, people, I am sure were just wondering 00:15:24.56\00:15:27.23 what's going on. 00:15:27.26\00:15:29.22 He was crying for the people of Jerusalem. 00:15:29.25\00:15:32.18 He knew what was going to happen. 00:15:32.21\00:15:35.04 He was crying for those people 00:15:35.07\00:15:36.77 in that urban area because as He looked at 00:15:36.80\00:15:39.36 and He saw the glistening top of the temple 00:15:39.39\00:15:42.88 and the beauty, people would normally be 00:15:42.91\00:15:45.70 very proud and excited and happy 00:15:45.73\00:15:47.57 and yet He was crying because the city is 00:15:47.60\00:15:50.35 not just buildings and gleaming cement 00:15:50.38\00:15:53.79 and steel and glass. 00:15:53.82\00:15:56.92 The city represents people 00:15:56.95\00:15:59.43 and He was crying for the people. 00:15:59.46\00:16:00.93 And I suppose I'd want to ask 00:16:00.96\00:16:02.67 the question of each of us, are we weeping with Jesus 00:16:02.70\00:16:06.61 for the people of the cities? 00:16:06.64\00:16:09.59 And as we look at how to try to reach people 00:16:09.62\00:16:13.18 in the cities, we have to remember 00:16:13.21\00:16:16.14 to use His methods. 00:16:16.17\00:16:17.39 And those methods were to rub shoulders 00:16:17.42\00:16:19.81 with them, to find out 00:16:19.84\00:16:21.76 where they were hurting, to meet their needs. 00:16:21.79\00:16:26.48 Jesus was always compassionate in the way 00:16:26.51\00:16:31.74 that He went about trying to 00:16:31.77\00:16:33.30 alleviate the results of sin and difficulty. 00:16:33.33\00:16:38.11 And that's really what Seventh-day Adventists 00:16:38.14\00:16:40.51 are called to do. 00:16:40.54\00:16:42.01 When we go into the cities, 00:16:42.04\00:16:43.07 we are supposed to use all kinds of methods 00:16:43.10\00:16:45.64 that will help people on a very basic level 00:16:45.67\00:16:49.80 and then draw them closer to someone 00:16:49.83\00:16:52.19 who can truly give them a much broader picture 00:16:52.22\00:16:55.95 of who they are and why they are there 00:16:55.98\00:16:58.75 and give them a hope for the future. 00:16:58.78\00:17:00.66 Because of course that's what Christ soon 00:17:00.69\00:17:02.88 coming provides for each of us 00:17:02.91\00:17:04.92 as Seventh-day Adventist Christians. 00:17:04.95\00:17:07.46 One of the ways in which we are finding to be 00:17:07.49\00:17:11.00 the most successful is to use the approach 00:17:11.03\00:17:15.16 of what is termed as centers of influence. 00:17:15.19\00:17:18.60 Centers of influence helped to touch 00:17:18.63\00:17:21.18 the lives of people in a variety of ways. 00:17:21.21\00:17:24.72 Center of influence could be something 00:17:24.75\00:17:26.80 where you have a very strong health outreach. 00:17:26.83\00:17:30.37 You have cooking classes that will show a wonderful way 00:17:30.40\00:17:34.36 in which to live a vegetarian life 00:17:34.39\00:17:36.81 not because you can earn your way to heaven 00:17:36.84\00:17:38.87 but because it's a healthier way to live, 00:17:38.90\00:17:41.21 you'll live longer and your mind will be brighter 00:17:41.24\00:17:43.99 as you are able to share with others 00:17:44.02\00:17:45.54 about Christ and His love. 00:17:45.57\00:17:48.64 It maybe an area, maybe it's a health clinic, 00:17:48.67\00:17:52.99 maybe it is a community outreach in helping families. 00:17:53.02\00:17:58.38 Maybe it's a creative way of helping to tutor children 00:17:58.41\00:18:03.50 who need assistance in school. 00:18:03.53\00:18:06.14 Maybe it is a daycare center. 00:18:06.17\00:18:09.26 I've visited one of those recently in the Middle-East. 00:18:09.29\00:18:12.71 It thrilled my heart to hear 00:18:12.74\00:18:14.55 this little four year old children 00:18:14.58\00:18:16.96 singing songs about Jesus and praying. 00:18:16.99\00:18:21.54 It was an amazing thing, 00:18:21.57\00:18:24.57 repeating memory verses, I guess. 00:18:24.60\00:18:26.25 It was just marvelous to hear them, 00:18:26.28\00:18:28.85 verses from the Bible. 00:18:28.88\00:18:31.56 You know, centers of influence can be anything 00:18:31.59\00:18:35.59 that provides you with a touch to the community 00:18:35.62\00:18:40.03 and to people, helping them where they are hurt. 00:18:40.06\00:18:43.61 Now there's a beautiful text in scripture 00:18:43.64\00:18:45.66 which tells us what Jesus' mission was. 00:18:45.69\00:18:50.11 In fact, it comes from the Book of Isaiah. 00:18:50.14\00:18:53.48 Jesus went into the synagogue 00:18:53.51\00:18:57.25 and He stood up to read in Nazareth 00:18:57.28\00:19:01.03 and He actually chose a passage 00:19:01.06\00:19:04.48 from the Book of Isaiah that spoke about himself, 00:19:04.51\00:19:07.02 it's a marvelous passage. 00:19:07.05\00:19:10.10 And in verse 18 of Luke 4, He says, 00:19:10.13\00:19:13.78 "The spirit of the Lord is upon me 00:19:13.81\00:19:15.07 because he's anointed me 00:19:15.10\00:19:16.13 to preach the gospel to the poor," 00:19:16.16\00:19:18.25 lot of poor people in the cities. 00:19:18.28\00:19:20.68 "To heal the broken hearted," 00:19:20.71\00:19:23.87 there are enormous amounts 00:19:23.90\00:19:25.38 of broken hearted people in cities. 00:19:25.41\00:19:27.96 "And to preach deliverance to the captives, 00:19:27.99\00:19:30.23 recovery of sight to the blind, 00:19:30.26\00:19:31.98 to set at liberty them that are bruised." 00:19:32.01\00:19:34.08 Lots of people are captive 00:19:34.11\00:19:35.68 to all kids of the devil snares in the cities. 00:19:35.71\00:19:40.47 A lot of bruised people, people who need healing, 00:19:40.50\00:19:43.84 not just physically but emotionally and spiritually. 00:19:43.87\00:19:47.93 So that's why Seventh-day Adventist 00:19:47.96\00:19:50.08 need to follow Christ's example 00:19:50.11\00:19:52.40 as He read about His own ministry 00:19:52.43\00:19:54.68 in dealing with people 00:19:54.71\00:19:55.98 whether its in centers of influence, 00:19:56.01\00:19:57.56 whether it is at work in a busy metropolitan area, 00:19:57.59\00:20:01.29 whether it's in the home, in an apartment building 00:20:01.32\00:20:04.59 wherever people live. 00:20:04.62\00:20:06.09 Follow those methods of helping to bring bruised, captive, 00:20:06.12\00:20:11.19 broken hearted people to the foot of the cross 00:20:11.22\00:20:14.10 and you do that through compassionate love 00:20:14.13\00:20:16.86 and care following Jesus' methods. 00:20:16.89\00:20:20.32 Fantastic. 00:20:20.35\00:20:21.50 I wish we had 70 minutes instead of 7 minutes. 00:20:21.53\00:20:24.40 Thank you, Pastor Wilson. 00:20:24.43\00:20:26.11 And viewers at home, Mission to the Cities 00:20:26.14\00:20:28.92 to find out more you can go to adventistmission.org 00:20:28.95\00:20:31.93 or you can go to missiontothecities.org 00:20:31.96\00:20:34.60 and there you'll find stories, resources, plans, 00:20:34.63\00:20:38.54 how you can be involved, what you can pray for. 00:20:38.57\00:20:41.23 Please pray for Mission to the Cities. 00:20:41.26\00:20:43.43 Pray for these people that Elder Wilson 00:20:43.46\00:20:45.17 has reminded us that God loves so much. 00:20:45.20\00:20:48.56 On a cold Sabbath morning in Macedonia, 00:21:01.98\00:21:04.26 a small Adventist group gathers for worship. 00:21:04.29\00:21:07.66 A wood burning fire keeps them warm. 00:21:07.69\00:21:10.16 They are meeting in this house 00:21:10.19\00:21:11.84 because there is no Adventist church 00:21:11.87\00:21:13.61 building in the city. 00:21:13.64\00:21:16.06 This is the city of Ohrid. 00:21:16.09\00:21:18.40 This city is known in the summer 00:21:18.43\00:21:20.10 for being a tourist destination. 00:21:20.13\00:21:22.40 The lake serves as a center point for activities. 00:21:22.43\00:21:25.86 Boating, fishing and lounging around 00:21:25.89\00:21:28.49 are just some of the regular activities 00:21:28.52\00:21:30.24 that happen here. 00:21:30.27\00:21:31.74 European tourists 00:21:31.77\00:21:34.26 visit the city each year. 00:21:34.29\00:21:35.85 But on this cold day local residents are 00:21:35.88\00:21:38.48 the only ones in sight. 00:21:38.51\00:21:41.05 Although the air is cold, this group warms up the room 00:21:41.08\00:21:44.38 as they continue their church service. 00:21:44.41\00:21:46.58 Each week they meet 00:21:46.61\00:21:47.93 faithfully discussing the Sabbath school lesson 00:21:47.96\00:21:50.63 and then waiting eagerly for the sermon to follow. 00:21:50.66\00:21:53.82 Each member plays a special role on Sabbath morning. 00:21:53.85\00:21:56.84 Leading out in lessons, 00:21:56.87\00:21:59.06 preaching and even adding fresh logs to the fire 00:21:59.09\00:22:02.27 are important roles in this home church. 00:22:02.30\00:22:05.65 After the service, the group shares a meal together. 00:22:05.68\00:22:09.14 The owner of this home cooks a traditional 00:22:09.17\00:22:11.40 Macedonia meal for the group. 00:22:11.43\00:22:13.18 As they say a prayer they reflect on the message 00:22:17.59\00:22:20.62 that was given earlier. 00:22:20.65\00:22:23.05 The food warms their bodies as they share stories 00:22:23.08\00:22:26.10 and conversation with each other. 00:22:26.13\00:22:28.45 Some of the members discuss their plans to invite 00:22:28.48\00:22:30.90 neighbors to worship with them in the following weeks. 00:22:30.93\00:22:34.81 The church members pray for a chance to worship 00:22:34.84\00:22:37.06 in a new church building, 00:22:37.09\00:22:39.07 a building that can be used to invite their neighbors. 00:22:39.10\00:22:42.39 They have purchased this old building 00:22:42.42\00:22:44.43 with hopes to renovate and create a community center. 00:22:44.46\00:22:49.61 We want to build this center not just for a church 00:22:49.64\00:22:52.08 but also for mission projects. 00:22:52.11\00:22:54.29 We can share books, have meetings and reach the people. 00:22:54.32\00:22:58.36 It is located in a very attractive place 00:22:58.39\00:23:00.92 in the downtown area. 00:23:00.95\00:23:02.85 Here visitors can come and feel welcome. 00:23:02.88\00:23:05.88 It's an ideal spot for tourist 00:23:05.91\00:23:07.97 or community members walking by. 00:23:08.00\00:23:10.53 It is a special feeling to know 00:23:10.56\00:23:12.07 that we are a part of a big organization, 00:23:12.10\00:23:14.41 the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:23:14.44\00:23:16.20 It's a big family and we are happy to be 00:23:16.23\00:23:18.29 a part of that family. 00:23:18.32\00:23:20.03 Please pray for the church in Macedonia 00:23:20.06\00:23:22.68 that they may reach their neighbors 00:23:22.71\00:23:24.23 and have a permanent place to worship. 00:23:24.26\00:23:26.64 As we look at countries such as Macedonia, 00:23:29.38\00:23:31.85 as we see the see the growing urban 00:23:31.88\00:23:33.48 and secular world and as we face 00:23:33.51\00:23:35.91 the need of engaging our young people in mission, 00:23:35.94\00:23:39.08 we see tremendous
