On today's program we travel to the Indian Subcontinent 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.16 and to a mountain village in China. 00:00:04.19\00:00:06.78 We'll also learn how one organization 00:00:06.81\00:00:08.71 is touching the lives of hundreds 00:00:08.74\00:00:10.56 of needy women and children in Asia. 00:00:10.59\00:00:13.15 All that and more coming up next on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:13.18\00:00:16.89 Just before He went up to heaven 00:00:28.63\00:00:30.87 Jesus gave us a command, He gave us a mission. 00:00:30.90\00:00:36.56 Jesus said, go. 00:00:36.59\00:00:38.98 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:39.01\00:00:43.86 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:43.89\00:00:48.35 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots 00:00:53.26\00:00:55.65 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:55.68\00:00:57.25 When I speak at camp meetings, sometimes I've someone 00:00:57.28\00:00:59.71 from the Adventist Mission staff come with me. 00:00:59.74\00:01:02.07 When they do I like to give them a quiz. 00:01:02.10\00:01:04.20 And today I have a quiz question ready just for you. Ready? 00:01:04.23\00:01:09.21 What percentage of the world's population is Christian? 00:01:09.24\00:01:13.00 Is it A. 100%. 00:01:13.03\00:01:15.62 B. 65%. 00:01:15.65\00:01:18.81 C. 33%. 00:01:18.84\00:01:22.16 Well, if you choose A 100% you got a very optimistic view, 00:01:22.19\00:01:25.86 if you said 65% you're still pretty optimistic. 00:01:25.89\00:01:29.64 You're right if you choose C. 00:01:29.67\00:01:32.11 Just 33% or one third of the world. 00:01:32.14\00:01:35.60 That means that two thirds of earth's population 00:01:35.63\00:01:38.54 either has no religion 00:01:38.57\00:01:39.92 or another religion than Christianity. 00:01:39.95\00:01:42.26 And many of these people live in Asia. 00:01:42.29\00:01:44.78 So today we'll be talking with Greg Whitsett 00:01:44.81\00:01:47.52 who heads the Global Mission Center for East Asia religions. 00:01:47.55\00:01:52.26 But first, let's learn about Asian Aid 00:01:52.29\00:01:54.51 an organization that's making a difference in Asia 00:01:54.54\00:01:57.45 through education and through health. 00:01:57.48\00:01:59.73 We'll be talking with Jim Rennie, 00:01:59.76\00:02:01.66 the CEO of Asian Aid, USA. 00:02:01.69\00:02:04.72 But first, let's watch this video. 00:02:04.75\00:02:07.44 For over 40 years Asian Aid is an organization 00:02:38.20\00:02:41.64 giving hope to so many. 00:02:41.67\00:02:43.98 Their outreach spans from India, Bangladesh to Nepal and beyond. 00:02:44.01\00:02:49.38 From remote villages and empty fields 00:02:49.41\00:02:53.10 to scrolling centers of education, 00:02:53.13\00:02:56.44 from nothing to the unimaginable. 00:02:56.47\00:02:59.89 Asian Aid's development projects provide child sponsorship, 00:03:02.89\00:03:06.48 fresh water, and medical care for women and leper victims. 00:03:06.51\00:03:11.54 They provide a high standard of education 00:03:11.57\00:03:13.77 to impoverished children. 00:03:13.80\00:03:16.92 Asian Aid has a vision driven by a woman 00:03:16.95\00:03:19.71 humbly fulfilling the Biblical principle 00:03:19.74\00:03:22.20 that calls for us to care for the least of these. 00:03:22.23\00:03:25.60 This standard is still true today. 00:03:27.13\00:03:29.84 The need is still there. 00:03:29.87\00:03:32.38 Less than 50% of India's children get an education, 00:03:39.20\00:03:43.18 one million women in Nepal suffer from uterine prolapse 00:03:43.21\00:03:46.31 and are in need of immediate surgery. 00:03:46.34\00:03:48.85 Over 5,000 babies die everyday due to extreme poverty. 00:03:48.88\00:03:53.75 These are better few of the harsh realities. 00:03:53.78\00:03:56.76 Asian Aid is meeting these challenges 00:04:00.18\00:04:02.29 and transforming the lives of so many in need. 00:04:02.32\00:04:05.06 Always sticking to their core mission, giving hope. 00:04:07.23\00:04:11.89 Asian Aid sponsors thousands of children 00:04:21.40\00:04:23.86 in slums, in destitute villages. 00:04:23.89\00:04:26.64 They support over 100 schools and orphanages. 00:04:27.79\00:04:31.01 They provide a value spaced education 00:04:32.90\00:04:35.46 and give them a sense of place, a home. 00:04:38.23\00:04:40.89 Well, in my dream I was just thinking 00:04:42.91\00:04:44.74 of a small boarding school with maybe 50 children 00:04:44.77\00:04:47.66 and that of course did increased to 200 quite fast 00:04:47.69\00:04:50.67 but now to see these buildings 00:04:50.70\00:04:53.44 and this campus is just so amazing. 00:04:53.47\00:04:56.24 And now there are 750 children 00:04:56.27\00:05:00.01 actually studying and learning so much on this school compound. 00:05:00.04\00:05:05.00 In Nepal over a million women 00:05:15.87\00:05:17.69 suffer from an epidemic of uterine prolapse. 00:05:17.72\00:05:20.91 Through their educational outreach programs 00:05:20.94\00:05:23.21 and medical treatment clinics 00:05:23.24\00:05:25.13 Asian Aid has helped thousands of women. 00:05:25.16\00:05:29.02 They also give shelter and educate women 00:05:29.05\00:05:31.19 who have escape from the human trafficking business 00:05:31.22\00:05:33.77 providing them a way back to a better life. 00:05:33.80\00:05:37.70 One of the most important things that Asian Aid does 00:05:37.73\00:05:40.28 is see that girls get care for, 00:05:40.31\00:05:42.61 that girls get a chance of education 00:05:42.64\00:05:44.75 and girl get a chance to come up in society. 00:05:44.78\00:05:46.99 Asian Aid supports premier school 00:05:56.09\00:05:57.87 for the blind and the deaf 00:05:57.90\00:06:00.00 preparing them for success in the world community. 00:06:00.03\00:06:02.73 It's easy to put a price on what it cost to educate 00:06:08.49\00:06:11.05 and feed a child for a day 00:06:11.08\00:06:15.16 but how do you put a price on transformation. 00:06:15.19\00:06:18.15 Asian Aid graduates serve important roles 00:06:22.11\00:06:24.86 from nurses and teachers 00:06:24.89\00:06:26.96 to top leading medical and research scientists. 00:06:26.99\00:06:30.85 All are contributing in positive ways to the global community. 00:06:30.88\00:06:34.06 I want to be a social worker. 00:06:42.36\00:06:45.74 I want to become teacher. 00:06:45.77\00:06:48.01 I want to become doctor 00:06:48.04\00:06:49.55 because I want to help the other of the people. 00:06:49.58\00:06:53.87 These children are living proof 00:06:57.72\00:06:59.42 that Asian Aid doesn't just feed a child's stomach 00:06:59.45\00:07:02.30 but fuels their desire to learn, 00:07:02.33\00:07:04.50 to achieve and to give something back. 00:07:04.53\00:07:07.92 Asian Aid feeds a child's soul, 00:07:07.95\00:07:11.23 but ultimately what Asian Aid does 00:07:11.26\00:07:14.25 is give hope, hope to children, hope to women, 00:07:14.28\00:07:19.42 hope to those who needed the most. 00:07:19.45\00:07:21.48 Asian Aid knows that making an investment in hope 00:07:23.78\00:07:26.60 requires a decision to act now. 00:07:26.63\00:07:29.53 It's a principle that can only pay off 00:07:30.36\00:07:32.43 with help from sponsors like you. 00:07:32.46\00:07:35.11 Standing still is not an option. 00:07:35.14\00:07:38.34 Asian Aid is hope in motion. 00:07:38.37\00:07:42.18 As you can see Asian Aid is doing 00:07:52.24\00:07:54.44 a wonderful work in parts of the world 00:07:54.47\00:07:57.92 where there are just tremendous challenges 00:07:57.95\00:07:59.69 and I'm delighted to have as my guest Jim Rennie 00:07:59.72\00:08:03.46 who is the CEO for Asian Aid, USA. 00:08:03.49\00:08:06.45 Jim, thanks for joining us. 00:08:06.48\00:08:07.62 Thanks, Gary, please to be here. 00:08:07.65\00:08:09.52 On the video there we saw 00:08:09.55\00:08:11.13 just a range of things that you're involved in. 00:08:11.16\00:08:13.54 Can you just give us some of the highlights, 00:08:13.57\00:08:15.36 some of the main themes of what you are doing? 00:08:15.39\00:08:18.88 Well, Gary, our main activity is child's sponsorship. 00:08:18.91\00:08:23.03 We take children based on need 00:08:23.06\00:08:25.44 and place them in an Adventist school 00:08:25.47\00:08:27.93 and then sponsored by a person or a group 00:08:27.96\00:08:32.38 back either in America, Australia, 00:08:32.41\00:08:35.14 in fact in many parts of the world. 00:08:35.17\00:08:38.23 So that's our key activity 00:08:38.26\00:08:39.76 and we have over six and half thousand children 00:08:39.79\00:08:42.90 sponsored in Adventist schools predominantly in India, 00:08:42.93\00:08:46.94 but Nepal and Bangladesh also. 00:08:46.97\00:08:51.82 The next key activity our orphanages, 00:08:51.85\00:08:54.69 we have four orphanages which are run by the church 00:08:54.72\00:08:58.60 but funded by Asian Aid. 00:08:58.63\00:09:01.18 And so once again the children in those orphanages 00:09:01.21\00:09:05.42 are sponsored by a sponsor or a group 00:09:05.45\00:09:09.01 back in one of many countries. 00:09:09.04\00:09:12.39 Then we are also active in helping schools. 00:09:13.29\00:09:16.96 We're getting a big demand for helping schools 00:09:16.99\00:09:20.31 with medical issues, building issues, 00:09:20.34\00:09:22.99 and improving education. 00:09:23.02\00:09:24.60 So that's a major challenge for us in some of these countries. 00:09:24.63\00:09:30.33 In India and Nepal we've started to get involved in child rescue 00:09:30.36\00:09:36.89 that's from children involved in beggary, 00:09:36.92\00:09:40.48 involved in prostitution, involved in child labor. 00:09:40.51\00:09:43.81 We got involved in one program in Bangalore and one in Nepal. 00:09:43.84\00:09:47.70 And then in Nepal we're involved in women's health issues. 00:09:47.73\00:09:52.23 We traditionally have helped women in that area 00:09:52.26\00:09:55.20 and have Asian Aid in total 00:09:55.23\00:09:58.07 has done over 9,000 women operations in Nepal. 00:09:58.10\00:10:03.61 Jim, you know, that's a lot of people 00:10:03.64\00:10:06.76 whose lives have been impacted. How are these children chosen? 00:10:06.79\00:10:10.19 For example the kids who come to put into an Adventist school, 00:10:10.22\00:10:13.35 how do you get lucky enough to be chosen? 00:10:13.38\00:10:16.44 Well, it happens in a number of ways. 00:10:16.47\00:10:19.26 First of all school may indicate 00:10:19.29\00:10:21.39 that it wants applications so we grant them applications. 00:10:21.42\00:10:26.50 So either our field worker or the principal 00:10:26.53\00:10:29.76 literally receives the application 00:10:29.79\00:10:32.77 which is weighted by the school and by us based on need. 00:10:32.80\00:10:36.60 And so some times we get leads from the church 00:10:36.63\00:10:41.67 but in most cases I would say 80-90% of the children 00:10:41.70\00:10:45.83 have had no exposure to the Christianity. 00:10:45.86\00:10:48.60 So we're doing a key thing. 00:10:48.63\00:10:50.35 We are giving them a good education 00:10:50.38\00:10:53.46 but we are also introducing them to Jesus. 00:10:53.49\00:10:57.61 Can you give me an example of one of the children 00:10:57.64\00:11:00.24 whose life has been changed by Asian Aid? 00:11:00.27\00:11:03.49 Yes, well, I visit a lot of schools in India 00:11:04.68\00:11:07.34 and sometimes I don't spend enough time with the children. 00:11:07.37\00:11:12.31 So one day I had noticed a little bright young boy, 00:11:12.34\00:11:17.05 he was always saying hello. 00:11:17.08\00:11:20.02 I noticed he was very attentive from the school 00:11:20.05\00:11:22.56 and he was a day student. 00:11:22.59\00:11:24.83 So we have day students, boarders. 00:11:24.86\00:11:28.51 And so a day student walks from their home to the school 00:11:28.54\00:11:31.91 so they are normally pretty close 00:11:31.94\00:11:33.41 sometimes they might come on a bus. 00:11:33.44\00:11:36.65 And his name was Riku, R-I-K-U, no, Riku I think. 00:11:36.68\00:11:42.09 So I asked them to take me back to his home 00:11:42.12\00:11:45.30 and so we walked down through the town. 00:11:45.33\00:11:49.16 Oh, it was probably a 10 minute walked through the busy streets 00:11:49.19\00:11:52.67 and then very quickly out into a small village. 00:11:52.70\00:11:55.81 And he was just so proud 00:11:55.84\00:11:59.16 to take me back to his tidy, small, dirty house. 00:11:59.19\00:12:05.67 His mother was so proud that I was there. 00:12:05.70\00:12:12.59 It was--it was what I call a tidy dirty house. 00:12:12.62\00:12:15.88 To us we couldn't think of living there 00:12:15.91\00:12:18.15 but to them in their own way it was tidy. 00:12:18.18\00:12:21.38 She looked after it and she was just so proud 00:12:21.41\00:12:24.87 that her boy was getting an education. 00:12:24.90\00:12:27.84 So it was just an eye-opener 00:12:27.87\00:12:30.19 to realize where the kids come from. 00:12:30.22\00:12:33.09 Now some of them live in better houses than that. 00:12:33.12\00:12:36.40 And so he gets home probably around 3:30-4:00 00:12:36.43\00:12:41.13 he busy helping his mother, he has to go and get water. 00:12:41.16\00:12:44.22 All the things you would imagine on the mission field 00:12:44.25\00:12:47.23 but for that boy to walk me through the streets 00:12:47.26\00:12:51.08 and to take me back to his house 00:12:51.11\00:12:53.10 and to see the reaction of his mom. 00:12:53.13\00:12:54.99 So I probably don't do that enough. Right. 00:12:55.02\00:12:57.88 I think the other things that are the orphans. 00:12:57.91\00:13:01.57 See orphans have nothing 00:13:01.60\00:13:03.03 and they are always pleased to see you, 00:13:03.06\00:13:05.70 they always call you sir 00:13:05.73\00:13:08.60 and they want to sit down and talk to you. 00:13:08.63\00:13:10.57 And so when things are going tough I go and talk to the kids. 00:13:10.60\00:13:15.26 Yeah, Jim, somebody viewing this program 00:13:15.29\00:13:17.87 they say perhaps I would like to sponsor a child, 00:13:17.90\00:13:21.91 how do they go about doing that? 00:13:21.94\00:13:24.00 Well, our key way of contacting us 00:13:24.03\00:13:26.49 is through our website asianaid.org 00:13:26.52\00:13:29.74 And child sponsorship, not everyone 00:13:29.77\00:13:32.20 can go to the mission field, not everyone can travel, 00:13:32.23\00:13:35.08 not everyone can go in a building trip. 00:13:35.11\00:13:37.54 But the great thing about sponsorship is 00:13:37.57\00:13:39.93 you know that every morning you are making a real difference 00:13:39.96\00:13:43.57 in the life of the child who is over there in the mission field. 00:13:43.60\00:13:47.41 And so you'll get school reports sometimes good, sometimes bad. 00:13:47.44\00:13:53.74 You can write to your child. 00:13:53.77\00:13:56.36 So child sponsorship is a very effective way 00:13:56.39\00:13:59.71 of having real live involvement in the mission field. Wonderful. 00:13:59.74\00:14:04.56 Jim, thank you so much for coming, sharing with us today. 00:14:04.59\00:14:08.07 And viewers at home, maybe God is calling you 00:14:08.10\00:14:13.08 to make a difference in the life of a child 00:14:13.11\00:14:15.76 in India or Nepal or Bangladesh. 00:14:15.79\00:14:19.27 Life is tough, life is very difficult 00:14:19.30\00:14:22.04 and there are many kids whose lives 00:14:22.07\00:14:23.43 have been changed through Asian Aid. 00:14:23.46\00:14:24.82 So go to asianaid.org and see if this is something 00:14:24.85\00:14:28.70 that you might be able to support. 00:14:28.73\00:14:29.80 I know my daughter, my seven year old, 00:14:29.83\00:14:32.33 receives letter from a girl that she is sponsoring in India 00:14:32.36\00:14:35.69 and helps open up her eyes 00:14:35.72\00:14:37.60 to a world of need and to connect with that. 00:14:37.63\00:14:39.92 And please pray for Asian Aid, pray for Jim and his team. 00:14:39.95\00:14:43.95 When I was a kid, we would go to camp meeting 00:15:29.45\00:15:31.74 and part of the excitement was 00:15:31.77\00:15:33.19 to meet "real life missionaries." 00:15:33.22\00:15:36.47 Well, I'm delighted to say that 00:15:36.50\00:15:38.60 my guest today is a real life missionary. 00:15:38.63\00:15:41.34 And, Greg, thanks for joining us. 00:15:41.37\00:15:43.14 Greg, you work with Global Mission. 00:15:43.17\00:15:44.88 You are the director of the center for east-- 00:15:44.91\00:15:47.54 The Global Mission Center for East Asian Religions. 00:15:47.57\00:15:50.52 It used to be called the Buddhist study center 00:15:50.55\00:15:52.92 but now we see that it's actually 00:15:52.95\00:15:54.92 bit more complex than just Buddhism. 00:15:54.95\00:15:56.79 Tell me a little bit about the scope of the center? 00:15:56.82\00:15:59.91 The center is working with Buddhist of course 00:15:59.94\00:16:05.15 that's our primary group that's been working with 00:16:05.18\00:16:08.34 over the last couple of decades. 00:16:08.37\00:16:10.54 But it also encompasses Taoism, and Confucianism, 00:16:10.57\00:16:15.83 Shinto and other East Asian religions, 00:16:15.86\00:16:18.17 traditions that maybe some of them are not so much 00:16:18.20\00:16:23.37 a religion but it's a mindset, it's a world view 00:16:23.40\00:16:26.67 that certainly impacts how people will understand 00:16:26.70\00:16:29.61 the good news of Jesus Christ. Sure. 00:16:29.64\00:16:32.86 Now, Greg, you are working in Bangkok, Thailand 00:16:32.89\00:16:37.32 before that where were you? 00:16:37.35\00:16:38.74 Well, I was working in another part of Southeast Asia 00:16:38.77\00:16:42.22 that is not open to the gospel so it's actually a area that we, 00:16:42.25\00:16:48.80 when we wrote articles and things we always suited then 00:16:48.83\00:16:51.29 because we didn't want to disclose the location. 00:16:51.32\00:16:53.59 But it's a country, communist country 00:16:53.62\00:16:56.64 that has beautiful people, and beautiful place to live 00:16:56.67\00:17:01.84 and enjoy these great peace and that's sort of thing 00:17:01.87\00:17:03.95 but not a lot of religious freedom. Yeah. 00:17:03.98\00:17:06.69 Now that's where I first met you and at that time 00:17:06.72\00:17:09.81 you were working for the educational needs 00:17:09.84\00:17:12.60 of the community and making a lot of friends I saw. 00:17:12.63\00:17:16.54 How long have you and your family been in Southeast Asia? 00:17:16.57\00:17:19.80 We've been there 11 years, 00:17:19.83\00:17:21.72 10 years before coming to the center 00:17:21.75\00:17:24.17 and enjoyed all of that. 00:17:24.20\00:17:26.12 It's just a beautiful place to be involved in living a life. 00:17:26.15\00:17:29.85 So 11 years and how long have you and Amy been married? 00:17:29.88\00:17:33.28 We've been married 17. 00:17:33.31\00:17:34.57 Okay, so majority of your life is been... 00:17:34.60\00:17:36.52 That's right. Yeah. 00:17:36.55\00:17:38.34 Now you have two children and you're living in a place 00:17:38.37\00:17:44.22 that is very different from where you come from, 00:17:44.25\00:17:46.16 what has led you to not only go as a missionary but to stay? 00:17:46.19\00:17:52.36 Well, we actually have three children. Oh, sorry. 00:17:52.39\00:17:56.65 You're right, we have two, 00:17:56.68\00:17:58.14 we got our own children 00:17:58.17\00:17:59.92 but we have a foster daughter that's been with us. 00:17:59.95\00:18:03.66 But that's all right. How old is she? 00:18:03.69\00:18:05.51 She is 13. Yes. 00:18:05.54\00:18:06.57 That's between our kids, who are 14, 11. 00:18:06.60\00:18:08.91 And she is a joy to our home and living with us now in Bangkok. 00:18:08.94\00:18:14.73 But we first got involved in missions was 00:18:14.76\00:18:17.96 when I was a student at Atlantic Union College 00:18:17.99\00:18:21.30 as a colporter, literature evangelist, 00:18:21.33\00:18:23.59 and that's mission, isn't it. Sure. 00:18:23.62\00:18:24.95 Going out and going door to door 00:18:24.98\00:18:26.47 and at that time I realized 00:18:26.50\00:18:27.79 I really wanting to focus my ministry 00:18:27.82\00:18:30.35 on those outside the church reaching the unreached. 00:18:30.38\00:18:34.19 And so made that, my wife and I got married 00:18:34.22\00:18:37.38 that was our dream that that's what we would focus our life on. 00:18:37.41\00:18:40.92 And when we were at the seminary felt the call to missions 00:18:40.95\00:18:44.97 and with the help of the mission's department 00:18:45.00\00:18:47.13 we join with Adventist Frontier Missions 00:18:47.16\00:18:49.25 and enjoyed serving for 10 years there in Laos. 00:18:49.28\00:18:52.02 And it wasn't always easy the first month I arrived 00:18:52.05\00:18:54.45 I was in ICU, almost passed away actually 00:18:54.48\00:18:57.23 because I had maybe dysentery with leptospirosis 00:18:57.26\00:19:01.15 and all these other kinds of tropical things 00:19:01.18\00:19:05.20 I didn't have any idea were so green 00:19:05.23\00:19:07.16 but God spared my life and we are still serving. 00:19:07.19\00:19:12.48 What a amazing experience it has been. Yeah. 00:19:12.51\00:19:15.94 Now, Greg, I know that recently 00:19:15.97\00:19:19.39 you went through tragedy in the family. 00:19:19.42\00:19:21.22 Tell us about that? 00:19:21.25\00:19:22.78 Well, when we were in our previous employment 00:19:22.81\00:19:28.30 in the different part of Southeast Asia there, 00:19:28.33\00:19:30.22 there were two girls that we-- 00:19:30.25\00:19:32.20 I was involved in children ministries in the field 00:19:32.23\00:19:35.14 and did a lot of work for children. 00:19:35.17\00:19:36.93 I had the first vacation Bible school in the country 00:19:36.96\00:19:39.07 and all these kinds of activities 00:19:39.10\00:19:40.63 but during that time, you know, I become aware 00:19:40.66\00:19:43.56 of different needs of different families 00:19:43.59\00:19:45.41 and not only our own daughter Seda but another girl 00:19:45.44\00:19:50.63 that is much younger we were also taking care of her. 00:19:50.66\00:19:55.29 Her father had been killed in gang activity, 00:19:55.32\00:19:57.11 her mother who had been gone since she was one month old, 00:19:57.14\00:20:00.38 actually in prison for dealing drugs. 00:20:00.41\00:20:02.65 And so her grandmother was trying to raise her 00:20:02.68\00:20:04.12 and she asked us to be kind of surrogate parents. 00:20:04.15\00:20:07.07 So we fostered her and helped 00:20:07.10\00:20:08.94 and that brought us a lot of joy 00:20:08.97\00:20:11.14 but she had a health condition called thalassemia 00:20:11.17\00:20:14.31 which is a blood disorder, and causes anemia 00:20:14.34\00:20:17.77 it can cause growth stunting and that sort of things. 00:20:17.80\00:20:21.68 And she required a monthly blood transfusion 00:20:21.71\00:20:25.45 since the time she was about four and a half. Oh, poor kid. 00:20:25.48\00:20:28.12 And yeah, it was very traumatic she was very unhealthy 00:20:28.15\00:20:31.53 so my wife is a nurse and would help her quite a bit 00:20:31.56\00:20:34.45 with stabilizing her health some and going to hospital. 00:20:34.48\00:20:37.61 Well, it was very difficult for us to leave a country 00:20:37.64\00:20:39.57 and to accept this call for one reason, 00:20:39.60\00:20:41.92 for many reasons but one of the reason is 00:20:41.95\00:20:43.29 because of course this little girl we'd have to leave behind 00:20:43.32\00:20:48.84 and that was difficult and the tragedy we went through 00:20:48.87\00:20:52.96 it was actually just in January we found out 00:20:52.99\00:20:55.34 that she got a spinal meningitis and they couldn't control it 00:20:55.37\00:20:59.35 and she was in ICU so we rushed to go be with her 00:20:59.38\00:21:03.05 and hope to get her better medical care, 00:21:03.08\00:21:05.28 take her to better hospital but she just didn't make it. 00:21:05.31\00:21:07.80 We got to say goodbye. 00:21:07.83\00:21:08.90 She was crying, she was actually in a coma, 00:21:08.93\00:21:11.74 but she woke up for just about an hour 00:21:11.77\00:21:13.56 able to say goodbye to her. 00:21:13.59\00:21:16.28 Very heart wrenching, you know, 00:21:16.31\00:21:18.14 and she coded when we try to transfer her 00:21:18.17\00:21:20.91 and while they were doing a heart compressions, 00:21:20.94\00:21:25.29 different chest compressions that sort of thing, 00:21:25.32\00:21:26.79 you know, just watching that thing 00:21:26.82\00:21:28.69 and holding the grandma next to me 00:21:28.72\00:21:30.88 and just saying God why, why, you know. 00:21:30.91\00:21:34.76 What a challenging experience that was 00:21:34.79\00:21:36.83 because here the six year old child now, 00:21:36.86\00:21:39.41 you know, she passes away. 00:21:39.44\00:21:42.43 The grandma went into a serious depression 00:21:42.46\00:21:44.84 and didn't know why was worth living anymore. 00:21:44.87\00:21:47.97 God had taken her son, now her granddaughter 00:21:48.00\00:21:51.04 and as how she saw it. 00:21:51.07\00:21:52.90 And to make a long story short we told her after few months 00:21:52.93\00:21:57.82 we said, please come and spend some time with us. 00:21:57.85\00:21:59.64 And we just began to go back through 00:21:59.67\00:22:01.36 the story of the plan of redemption, 00:22:01.39\00:22:05.46 but especially focusing on the meaning of Sabbath. 00:22:05.49\00:22:08.58 And on the picture the new earth and what that was going to be 00:22:08.61\00:22:14.16 where she can be reunited and raise her daughter, 00:22:14.19\00:22:16.66 her granddaughter rather in heaven. 00:22:16.69\00:22:18.46 And now she is excited she's got her faith restored 00:22:18.49\00:22:21.05 and she is sharing the blessing of God's plan 00:22:21.08\00:22:24.81 and the Sabbath with everybody. 00:22:24.84\00:22:27.34 And so we find that there is great comfort 00:22:27.37\00:22:29.75 in the promises of the new earth 00:22:29.78\00:22:31.59 and the time we reuntied with our loved ones. Yeah. 00:22:31.62\00:22:34.42 Thanks for sharing that with us, Greg. God bless you. 00:22:34.45\00:22:37.99 And viewers at home you know 00:22:38.02\00:22:39.80 there are so many joys in mission service 00:22:39.83\00:22:41.65 but there is also challenges, there's hurts and there is pain. 00:22:41.68\00:22:43.92 And please remember the thousands of missionaries 00:22:43.95\00:22:46.49 who are serving around the world today. 00:22:46.52\00:22:48.73 God will remain close to them and will comfort them 00:22:48.76\00:22:51.45 and encourage them and continue to support them. 00:22:51.48\00:22:54.63 It's Sabbath morning on this mountain top in China. 00:23:01.46\00:23:05.50 Above the simple village home stands a church. 00:23:05.53\00:23:09.00 Every week members of this village 00:23:09.03\00:23:11.08 gather to study and worship God. 00:23:11.11\00:23:14.17 Several years ago an Adventist member started visiting 00:23:14.20\00:23:17.28 the mountain tribal groups 00:23:17.31\00:23:18.69 and he made the long track up this mountain. 00:23:18.72\00:23:21.80 He found this village in a small group of people 00:23:21.83\00:23:23.94 who believed in Jesus and worshiped on Saturday, 00:23:23.97\00:23:27.22 only they didn't have a church building like this. 00:23:27.25\00:23:30.73 The man kept coming back and meeting with the people. 00:23:33.23\00:23:36.49 Together they built this church by hauling the materials 00:23:36.52\00:23:38.91 up the mountain in baskets on their backs, a 40 minutes hike. 00:23:38.94\00:23:45.11 Years ago there was 00:23:45.14\00:23:46.18 an Adventist family in this village. 00:23:46.21\00:23:48.51 This man's grandfather was studying to become 00:23:48.54\00:23:50.66 a worker for God at China training institute back in 1940. 00:23:50.69\00:23:55.64 Those were turbulent times and the school closed. 00:23:55.67\00:23:58.89 But through the years a small group of believers 00:23:58.92\00:24:01.16 remained faithful until one day a visitor found his lost tribe 00:24:01.19\00:24:05.33 and reignited the ember of faith in this village. 00:24:05.36\00:24:08.20 Today one third of the people in the village are Adventists. 00:24:10.31\00:24:14.40 Every Sabbath they gather to sing, pray, 00:24:14.43\00:24:16.94 and worship God in their church. 00:24:16.97\00:24:19.61 The children especially love it 00:24:19.64\00:24:21.27 when they share a meal after church. 00:24:21.30\00:24:23.61 Thank you for joining us on our visit to this 00:24:27.96\00:24:30.21 not so lost tribe and meeting the lovely people 00:24:30.24\00:24:33.32 who live and work in this village. 00:24:33.35\00:24:36.08 And thank you for your prayers 00:24:36.11\00:24:37.81 and support of mission work around the world. 00:24:37.84\00:24:41.74 Today we have a special offer on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:24:48.46\00:24:51.81 We know that many of our viewers love mission 00:24:51.84\00:24:53.87 and the different peoples, cultures, 00:24:53.90\00:24:55.54 and places around the world. 00:24:55.57\00:24:57.34 And so if you live in North America 00:24:57.37\00:24:58.99 and also enjoy eating we'd like to send you 00:24:59.02\00:25:01.80 a free copy of a new cookbook called "A Taste of Travel." 00:25:01.83\00:25:06.34 This beautifully illustrated book features soups and stews 00:25:06.37\00:25:09.55 from more than a 130 countries. 00:25:09.58\00:25:12.14 So if you live in North America, 00:25:12.17\00:25:13.71 simply call our toll free number 1-800-648-5824 00:25:13.74\00:25:19.50 or visit our website and ask for "A Taste of Travel" 00:25:19.53\00:25:23.52 or just mention the soup cookbook. 00:25:23.55\00:25:25.89 This book is completely free 00:25:25.92\00:25:27.39 although if you'd like to include a small donation 00:25:27.42\00:25:30.23 we'd be happy to receive it. 00:25:30.26\00:25:31.72 But hurry because supplies are limited. 00:25:31.75\00:25:34.46 And don't forget to clearly state your name and address. 00:25:34.49\00:25:37.62 And we'll send you a copy while supplies last. 00:25:37.65\00:25:41.31 Please pray for the people and places you see here each week. 00:25:41.34\00:25:45.19 And thank you to those of you who call or go online 00:25:45.22\00:25:48.23 and support Global Mission projects. 00:25:48.26\00:25:50.89 Thank you for helping us to reach the unreached with hope. 00:25:50.92\00:25:54.28 Until next time, I'm Gary Krause for Global Mission Snapshots. 00:25:54.31\00:25:57.87
