Kenyan prisoners singing praises to God, 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.77 a new global mission center and church planting projects 00:00:02.80\00:00:06.38 in Tanzania and Thailand, 00:00:06.41\00:00:08.65 all that and much, much more coming up next 00:00:08.68\00:00:11.56 right here on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:11.59\00:00:13.82 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:24.01\00:00:26.79 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:26.82\00:00:28.36 He gave us a mission. 00:00:29.75\00:00:32.52 Jesus said, go. 00:00:32.55\00:00:34.90 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:34.93\00:00:39.90 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:39.93\00:00:43.88 Hello, I am Gary Krause 00:00:49.08\00:00:50.31 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:50.34\00:00:53.10 If you are a regular viewer of Global Mission Snapshots 00:00:53.13\00:00:55.95 you may have noticed that we have an increasing emphasis 00:00:55.98\00:00:59.16 on mission in urban area of the world. 00:00:59.19\00:01:02.42 Today we'll be talking with Gerson Santos, 00:01:02.45\00:01:04.94 Director for the Global Mission center for Urban Ministries. 00:01:04.97\00:01:08.91 This is a new center focusing specifically on touching 00:01:08.94\00:01:12.38 the lives of people in large cities. 00:01:12.41\00:01:15.35 And we'll also be talking with Rick McEdward, 00:01:15.38\00:01:17.34 Director of the Global Mission Study Centers 00:01:17.37\00:01:20.22 about the tent maker program. 00:01:20.25\00:01:22.62 We'll go to a Kenyan prison 00:01:22.65\00:01:24.17 and we'll meet a woman doing her part 00:01:24.20\00:01:26.58 to provide healthcare in her community in Tanzania. 00:01:26.61\00:01:30.86 But first, let's visit 00:01:30.89\00:01:32.57 Global Mission projects in Thailand. 00:01:32.60\00:01:35.02 About two hours outside of Thailand's capital city Bangkok 00:01:38.84\00:01:42.92 lies the town of Sriracha. 00:01:42.95\00:01:45.65 The Seventh-day Adventist church is growing here. 00:01:45.68\00:01:49.18 This is a Global mission pioneer, 00:01:49.21\00:01:51.92 a church planter dedicated to sharing God's love 00:01:51.95\00:01:55.52 with the people in this area. 00:01:55.55\00:01:57.52 (Speaking in foreign language) 00:01:57.55\00:01:59.35 This global mission pioneer and another Thai pastor 00:02:02.51\00:02:05.31 visit people in their homes to teach them about Jesus. 00:02:05.34\00:02:09.16 This small group is just a handful of those interested 00:02:09.19\00:02:12.06 in studying God's word. 00:02:12.09\00:02:14.14 Many who attend these small groups are not Christians. 00:02:14.17\00:02:17.62 They ask questions because in their hearts they see 00:02:17.65\00:02:20.37 the truths of the Bible and want to know more. 00:02:20.40\00:02:23.61 When some Buddhist is interested and they like to learn more 00:02:23.64\00:02:27.71 about Christianity actually we feel so, 00:02:27.74\00:02:30.39 very happy even they not show much 00:02:30.42\00:02:33.61 but just only one, two people only. 00:02:33.64\00:02:36.84 But if we like they are interested 00:02:36.87\00:02:39.73 and we thank God for that. 00:02:39.76\00:02:41.98 Not long ago this church 00:02:42.01\00:02:44.64 in community center rebuilt in Sriracha. 00:02:44.67\00:02:47.58 The Global Mission pioneer and church members 00:02:47.61\00:02:50.16 reach out to the community in various ways. 00:02:50.19\00:02:52.92 They run language classes, 00:02:52.95\00:02:54.91 play soccer and hold Bible studies 00:02:54.94\00:02:57.65 and people have responded positively. 00:02:57.68\00:03:00.58 We'd like to provide this place for the community here around, 00:03:00.61\00:03:06.33 the people here that they are nonbeliever 00:03:06.36\00:03:09.03 and then we like to set the conclusion by having school, 00:03:09.06\00:03:13.55 having the soccer ball field and also the center, 00:03:13.58\00:03:17.83 here we have a center to service the community. 00:03:17.86\00:03:21.43 Seventh-day Adventist church members around the world 00:03:21.46\00:03:24.12 help fund this church in community center. 00:03:24.15\00:03:27.08 These buildings have a great impact 00:03:27.11\00:03:29.26 on reaching the needs of people in Sriracha. 00:03:29.29\00:03:31.77 Just a few hours from Sriracha, 00:03:46.43\00:03:48.59 in the city of Ayutthaya another recent project 00:03:48.62\00:03:51.98 funded by your mission offerings actively works 00:03:52.01\00:03:54.76 to reach the community. 00:03:54.79\00:03:56.04 Ayutthaya is a city known 00:03:56.60\00:03:58.34 for its ancient temples and vast history. 00:03:58.37\00:04:01.64 Here centuries ago the Burmese armies 00:04:01.67\00:04:04.16 destroy this city leaving behind remains of destruction. 00:04:04.19\00:04:08.25 Now the church here is growing. 00:04:08.28\00:04:10.31 The project here has a church building. 00:04:10.85\00:04:13.26 The church here is creating a foundation of member. 00:04:13.29\00:04:16.75 On this Sabbath the pastor leads and worship 00:04:16.78\00:04:19.46 and the members take part in the service. 00:04:19.49\00:04:22.01 It is a special Sabbath because on this day 00:04:22.04\00:04:24.59 they will participate in communion service. 00:04:24.62\00:04:27.52 Members humbly wash 00:04:32.15\00:04:33.45 one another's feet and pray together. 00:04:33.48\00:04:35.85 As they reenter the church their thoughts are with God. 00:04:40.35\00:04:44.51 The members ask God for forgiveness and courage 00:04:44.54\00:04:47.36 to serve Him each and everyday. 00:04:47.39\00:04:49.84 They eat the bread and drink the juice that represents 00:04:49.87\00:04:52.90 the body and the blood of Jesus. 00:04:52.93\00:04:55.25 This congregation has a passion to serve God 00:04:55.28\00:04:58.16 and share Him with others. 00:04:58.19\00:04:59.86 This congregation would not have a place to worship 00:05:00.30\00:05:03.89 if it was not for your faithful support of mission offerings. 00:05:03.92\00:05:07.53 People all over Thailand are eager to learn about Jesus. 00:05:07.56\00:05:11.38 With the help Adventist pastors and Global Mission pioneers 00:05:11.41\00:05:15.71 they will come to know Him. 00:05:15.74\00:05:17.47 Please pray for these small projects 00:05:17.50\00:05:19.90 located throughout Thailand 00:05:19.93\00:05:21.87 and thank you for your support 00:05:21.90\00:05:23.95 of the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:05:23.98\00:05:27.21 through your 13th Sabbath offering. 00:05:27.24\00:05:29.62 It's my pleasure to introduce our guest Pastor Gerson Santos. 00:05:38.07\00:05:42.85 Pastor Santos is one of the church leaders 00:05:42.88\00:05:45.75 in greater New York area of the United Sates 00:05:45.78\00:05:49.47 but he is also the Director 00:05:49.50\00:05:50.92 for the Global Mission Center for Urban Ministries. 00:05:50.95\00:05:54.66 And Gerson, thank you so much for joining us. 00:05:54.69\00:05:56.96 My pleasure. 00:05:56.99\00:05:58.11 This is the newest Global Mission Center, 00:05:58.14\00:06:00.51 we have had centers for Islam, 00:06:00.54\00:06:02.89 for Buddhism, for Hinduism, for Judaism, 00:06:02.92\00:06:05.70 for secular and postmodernism 00:06:05.73\00:06:08.05 but you are the representative of the newer center. 00:06:08.08\00:06:10.86 Why do we need a center for urban ministry? 00:06:10.89\00:06:14.07 Well, I believe the exact reason you just kind of stated 00:06:14.10\00:06:17.85 because you have so different kinds of specific study centers, 00:06:17.88\00:06:22.30 specific ministries to reach those special groups 00:06:22.33\00:06:26.59 but most of them live in the cities. 00:06:26.62\00:06:28.95 And so there are something common among all of them 00:06:28.98\00:06:33.99 and recently as we saw the growth of people 00:06:34.02\00:06:38.59 living in the cities, it's amazing. 00:06:38.62\00:06:40.14 In last 200 years we have a large percentage of population 00:06:40.17\00:06:44.29 growing in urban areas. 00:06:44.32\00:06:46.02 So there is a special need for that. 00:06:46.05\00:06:47.90 And historically, if we're going to be honest 00:06:47.93\00:06:50.03 the Seventh-day Adventist church has not done well 00:06:50.06\00:06:52.62 in urban areas mostly. 00:06:52.65\00:06:54.43 That's true and there are several reasons for that. 00:06:54.46\00:06:57.42 I would say first of all 00:06:57.45\00:06:59.20 probably because it's very costly, 00:06:59.23\00:07:01.70 everything in the city cost much more. 00:07:01.73\00:07:04.42 Traditionally I think our pioneers were the people 00:07:04.45\00:07:07.07 that came from farms or small towns 00:07:07.10\00:07:09.85 so yeah, it's easy for them to you know, 00:07:09.88\00:07:12.36 operate in a setting that will be more familiar to them. 00:07:12.39\00:07:15.78 And later on I think was kind of emphasis in living the cities 00:07:15.81\00:07:19.76 because of the challenges of the, the dangers of the city 00:07:19.79\00:07:24.00 we kind of develop a culture of avoiding the cities. 00:07:24.03\00:07:27.87 So, Gerson, what do we find in the cities in terms of ministry? 00:07:27.90\00:07:32.63 What is working, what sorts of models 00:07:32.66\00:07:35.80 we're finding that are having an effect? 00:07:35.83\00:07:39.19 I can list to you at least a few to illustrate 00:07:39.22\00:07:43.49 some of the most impressive ministries 00:07:43.52\00:07:45.56 that I think have been very effective. 00:07:45.59\00:07:47.73 I'd say number one is small group ministries. 00:07:47.76\00:07:50.57 I really believe the small groups 00:07:50.60\00:07:51.98 is the best setting to develop and to make disciples. 00:07:52.01\00:07:55.57 And this is our main goal, to make disciples. 00:07:55.60\00:07:58.94 So the small group ministry has been very effective. 00:07:58.97\00:08:02.08 Anywhere in the world, any culture, any language, 00:08:02.11\00:08:04.61 group you can imagine and I've seen so many places 00:08:04.64\00:08:08.94 that I could tell you for sure small group ministries, 00:08:08.97\00:08:12.32 this is the best and the number one ministry 00:08:12.35\00:08:15.90 to develop in the cities to make disciples. 00:08:15.93\00:08:18.56 I'd add to that probably mission communists, 00:08:18.59\00:08:23.28 something that is larger than a small group 00:08:23.31\00:08:25.67 but it is stronger just as small group meeting in the home 00:08:25.70\00:08:29.07 but maybe could be a group of small groups, 00:08:29.10\00:08:33.33 let's say two or three small groups coming together 00:08:33.36\00:08:35.71 once a month or once a quarter or having a department 00:08:35.74\00:08:39.56 or a ministry from a local church 00:08:39.59\00:08:42.04 or institution organizing a missionary outreach. 00:08:42.07\00:08:47.04 And I've seen in a couple of places this work, 00:08:47.07\00:08:50.04 I mean, in a wonderful way. 00:08:50.07\00:08:51.97 Another one I'd say is church planting. 00:08:52.00\00:08:54.83 I mean, when you're trying to reach a specific group 00:08:54.86\00:08:58.64 like you mentioned in the beginning, 00:08:58.67\00:09:00.70 Jewish, Muslims, Hindus or secular people 00:09:00.73\00:09:04.45 I mean, you need to plant a new church 00:09:04.48\00:09:06.02 because most of the church established in that area 00:09:06.05\00:09:08.56 won't be fit enough to receive, 00:09:08.59\00:09:13.60 welcome and integrate into their ministry 00:09:13.63\00:09:15.98 because that's another challenge. 00:09:16.01\00:09:17.19 It's not just to be you know, 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.90 having a hospitality department in your church, 00:09:19.93\00:09:23.96 very nice ushers and people will feel comfortable 00:09:23.99\00:09:27.39 but if they don't feel they are the part of the ministry 00:09:27.42\00:09:31.10 most of them will leave later on. 00:09:31.13\00:09:33.58 So we need to find an open space for new leadership, 00:09:33.61\00:09:36.70 and church planting does that. 00:09:36.73\00:09:38.40 This s why it's proven, church plant 00:09:38.43\00:09:40.10 is the best methodology to expand God's kingdom. 00:09:40.13\00:09:43.31 Yeah. 00:09:43.34\00:09:44.66 I would add also to that lay leadership. 00:09:44.69\00:09:48.16 We need to develop a new kind of approach to leadership. 00:09:48.19\00:09:51.07 Pastors need to be more trainers than just pastoring the church, 00:09:51.10\00:09:56.42 shepherds of the church and to develop new leaders 00:09:56.45\00:10:00.59 for these new churches that have been planted 00:10:00.62\00:10:03.16 because the church will never be able to fund 00:10:03.19\00:10:06.12 and hire new pastors for a wave of new churches. 00:10:06.15\00:10:11.05 If we really need to reach the word, 00:10:11.08\00:10:12.97 if we want to do that we gonna have 00:10:13.00\00:10:14.99 to plant thousands of new churches 00:10:15.02\00:10:16.80 and we need lay leadership. 00:10:16.83\00:10:19.09 By vocation pastors, 00:10:19.12\00:10:21.09 lay people that are really commit to the work 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.42 and be trained to be leaders of these new congregations. 00:10:23.45\00:10:27.45 And the last one I'd mention is centers of influence. 00:10:27.48\00:10:31.38 Defiantly all our churches, the schools, 00:10:31.41\00:10:34.47 institutions, book stores, 00:10:34.50\00:10:36.57 I mean, even a house can become 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.69 a center of influence in the community. 00:10:38.72\00:10:41.73 Yeah, Ellen White had a vision 00:10:41.76\00:10:44.06 for small centers of influence in every city. 00:10:44.09\00:10:48.21 She was talking about things like a cafe, 00:10:48.24\00:10:50.11 a vegetarian restaurant, treatment rooms, 00:10:50.14\00:10:52.16 simple health remedy, whatever it takes to connect 00:10:52.19\00:10:55.61 with community which brings me, Gerson, 00:10:55.64\00:10:58.93 well, I take this opportunity to talk about 00:10:58.96\00:11:00.94 this new magazine literally off 00:11:00.97\00:11:03.18 the presses last week, Mission 360. 00:11:03.21\00:11:06.95 We have print copies of it 00:11:06.98\00:11:08.43 but mainly this is going to be digital. 00:11:08.46\00:11:11.50 A digital magazine, you can get it for your Kindle, 00:11:11.53\00:11:14.11 fro your iPhone, for your iPad, you can view it online. 00:11:14.14\00:11:17.52 Nice thing, Gerson, too is that you'll read an article 00:11:17.55\00:11:19.82 and then in the middle of the article 00:11:19.85\00:11:20.98 you'll be able to press a button and play a video 00:11:21.01\00:11:23.16 about giving more information. 00:11:23.19\00:11:25.66 And in this first edition there is an article 00:11:25.69\00:11:27.98 on centers of influence. 00:11:28.01\00:11:30.57 And the opportunities for starting new centers 00:11:30.60\00:11:35.86 that connect to the community in a holistic way 00:11:35.89\00:11:38.44 to put Christ method into practice. 00:11:38.47\00:11:41.67 Gerson, as we look at the challenge 00:11:41.70\00:11:43.44 of the cities are you optimistic? 00:11:43.47\00:11:46.24 Oh, I think natural, this is part of my nature. 00:11:46.27\00:11:50.30 I really see a lot of potential. 00:11:50.33\00:11:52.84 I mean, you can focus on the program 00:11:52.87\00:11:54.43 but I see a lot of opportunities in the city. 00:11:54.46\00:11:57.42 I mean, you have so many people 00:11:57.45\00:11:59.28 and I mean, the population of the large cities is booming. 00:11:59.31\00:12:02.94 I mean, this is-- they are growing, 00:12:02.97\00:12:05.15 the large cities in the world are growing 00:12:05.18\00:12:07.97 and it's like Dave in the past. 00:12:08.00\00:12:10.22 I mean, people could see the giant and say, 00:12:10.25\00:12:12.21 he's too big, he's gonna kill us. 00:12:12.24\00:12:13.86 But Dave just saw and said, 00:12:13.89\00:12:14.95 he's too big, I can't miss it. 00:12:14.98\00:12:16.42 I mean, it's a tremendous opportunity, 00:12:16.45\00:12:20.06 in the cities you have so many people. 00:12:20.09\00:12:22.71 We need to find a way to connect to some of them 00:12:22.74\00:12:25.61 to reach them for Christ. 00:12:25.64\00:12:26.89 Fantastic. Rick McEdward, 00:13:38.14\00:13:39.91 who is the director of the Global Mission Studies Centers. 00:13:39.94\00:13:42.29 Thank you for joining us, Rick. 00:13:42.32\00:13:43.53 Happy to be here, Gary. 00:13:43.56\00:13:45.07 The Apostle Paul, when I think of him 00:13:45.10\00:13:46.67 I am thinking of a wonderful preacher, 00:13:46.70\00:13:48.64 I am thinking of a church planter 00:13:48.67\00:13:50.81 but what was his real profession? 00:13:50.84\00:13:53.41 Yeah, we always think of him 00:13:53.44\00:13:54.54 as the world's greatest evangelism 00:13:54.57\00:13:55.91 but he was really a tent maker. 00:13:55.94\00:13:58.76 He knew how to use a needle and thread 00:13:58.79\00:14:00.98 with the canvas and make tents. 00:14:01.01\00:14:03.87 So how is that important when we're thinking about mission? 00:14:03.90\00:14:07.11 Well, ultimately, the Apostle Paul 00:14:07.14\00:14:08.62 was the very first self-supporting missionary. 00:14:08.65\00:14:11.96 He didn't rely on somebody else to give him a salary. 00:14:11.99\00:14:16.20 He made his own way and he went from place to place 00:14:16.23\00:14:19.42 selling his canvas, selling the tents, 00:14:19.45\00:14:21.95 finding others who'd like 00:14:21.98\00:14:23.24 the profession and gathering them, etcetera 00:14:23.27\00:14:25.23 and so we see that he was willing to provide 00:14:25.26\00:14:29.86 for his own needs while sharing the gospel. 00:14:29.89\00:14:32.56 So when we look at the example of Paul, 00:14:32.59\00:14:36.36 we today, are the people following that tradition? 00:14:36.39\00:14:39.37 Actually, in Christian circles, 00:14:39.40\00:14:41.68 we call self-supporting missionaries, 00:14:41.71\00:14:43.90 we call them tentmakers. 00:14:43.93\00:14:46.68 Not all self-supporting missionaries 00:14:46.71\00:14:48.33 we would want to lump in that category 00:14:48.36\00:14:50.63 but those that use their profession 00:14:50.66\00:14:53.37 to go to a country that maybe of restricted access 00:14:53.40\00:14:58.24 and there by sharing Christian, 00:14:58.27\00:15:01.90 a cautious Christian witness 00:15:01.93\00:15:03.29 or maybe even starting a house church or a church. 00:15:03.32\00:15:05.97 Now when you say a country of restricted access, 00:15:06.00\00:15:08.00 what do you mean? 00:15:08.03\00:15:09.06 Well, you know we used to say 00:15:09.09\00:15:10.75 that there are closed countries and open countries. 00:15:10.78\00:15:13.08 But no country is closed to the Holy Spirit. 00:15:13.11\00:15:16.54 So we refer them as restricted access 00:15:16.57\00:15:18.78 because the government may not open up 00:15:18.81\00:15:21.49 for missionaries to come and go. 00:15:21.52\00:15:23.74 But business people and teachers and others can easily 00:15:23.77\00:15:27.61 access countries like that with jobs. 00:15:27.64\00:15:30.76 So these are people who take the initiative 00:15:30.79\00:15:32.89 to find the job in an area, run a business, 00:15:32.92\00:15:36.37 teach whatever but their main goal is to be a witness. 00:15:36.40\00:15:39.71 That's absolutely right. 00:15:39.74\00:15:41.09 So are there many of these tentmakers today? 00:15:41.12\00:15:43.80 Actually, the numbers are hard to calculate 00:15:43.83\00:15:46.58 because not everybody goes through an organization. 00:15:46.61\00:15:49.14 But yes, there are thousands of tentmakers around the world 00:15:49.17\00:15:51.78 and often found in some of the hardest spots 00:15:51.81\00:15:55.47 where we wouldn't normally want to go. 00:15:55.50\00:15:59.09 So can you give me an example of an Adventist tentmaker? 00:15:59.12\00:16:03.64 Absolutely, I know of a family who's been serving 00:16:03.67\00:16:06.88 for quite a number of years and they have located 00:16:06.91\00:16:12.00 in a restrictive accessed country. 00:16:12.03\00:16:15.07 One is a teacher, another does a small business 00:16:15.10\00:16:18.79 and one by one, they make friends and generate interests. 00:16:18.82\00:16:25.89 Why are they doing this? 00:16:25.92\00:16:27.68 Because they want to share their faith 00:16:27.71\00:16:30.43 and a lot of people think that tent making means 00:16:30.46\00:16:33.39 what we call tent faking. 00:16:33.42\00:16:35.02 In other words, you fake getting a job 00:16:35.05\00:16:37.26 so you can go and start a church 00:16:37.29\00:16:39.21 but we're talking about people who are doing a legitimate job. 00:16:39.24\00:16:42.60 Who are doing the very highest quality work possible, 00:16:42.63\00:16:46.25 who have integrity with their Boston co-workers 00:16:46.28\00:16:49.25 and therefore, use that as an avenue 00:16:49.28\00:16:53.09 for sharing what's genuinely going on in their hearts. 00:16:53.12\00:16:55.91 Now how does the Adventist church 00:16:55.94\00:16:57.97 give support to people like this? 00:16:58.00\00:16:59.89 Well, we have had tent making program for quite a long time 00:16:59.92\00:17:04.54 and we are right now giving more exposure to this 00:17:04.57\00:17:08.54 because we realize that traditional structures 00:17:08.57\00:17:11.56 may not always be able to meet the needs of the word field. 00:17:11.59\00:17:15.80 You know we have many places 00:17:15.83\00:17:17.95 that if I sign up as a missionary, 00:17:17.98\00:17:21.16 I may not be able to go. 00:17:21.19\00:17:23.99 So if somebody is viewing this program and said, 00:17:24.02\00:17:27.60 well, there might be something I might want to try, 00:17:27.63\00:17:29.46 where you start? 00:17:29.49\00:17:31.26 I think the best place to start is to contact 00:17:31.29\00:17:35.83 our office at Adventist Mission. 00:17:35.86\00:17:39.25 I think that there is a way to find information 00:17:39.28\00:17:44.24 by contacting me there, info@adventistmission.org. 00:17:44.27\00:17:48.86 And I think that we can also support people 00:17:48.89\00:17:52.36 who are looking for places to go, 00:17:52.39\00:17:55.34 by sharing with them where the greatest needs are. 00:17:55.37\00:17:59.59 Is this something that is dangerous? 00:17:59.62\00:18:01.23 Is it risky? 00:18:01.26\00:18:02.29 It doesn't have to be. 00:18:02.32\00:18:04.23 You know I've lived in a number of countries 00:18:04.26\00:18:06.65 that people say, oh, I can't live there 00:18:06.68\00:18:09.63 because it's risky but if we were there as people, 00:18:09.66\00:18:15.45 not as a missionary sent, 00:18:15.48\00:18:18.63 but as people who build friendships, 00:18:18.66\00:18:20.54 who do our work well, we're not talking about 00:18:20.57\00:18:23.42 something that's illegal because every country 00:18:23.45\00:18:26.48 people are allowed to ask questions. 00:18:26.51\00:18:28.89 And when we live our faith with integrity 00:18:28.92\00:18:31.58 people are naturally gonna ask us questions. 00:18:31.61\00:18:34.52 So in the training sessions for tentmakers, 00:18:34.55\00:18:37.98 what are the sort of principles that are shared with them? 00:18:38.01\00:18:41.00 Naturally, we want people understand 00:18:41.03\00:18:42.87 how to do cross cultural ministry. 00:18:42.90\00:18:44.93 There's a lot of understanding. 00:18:44.96\00:18:47.56 We assume a lot that people everywhere think 00:18:47.59\00:18:52.02 just like us but as soon as we get out of North America 00:18:52.05\00:18:55.15 or whatever country you're from we find 00:18:55.18\00:18:58.26 that there is world view patterns, cultural, customs 00:18:58.29\00:19:01.52 and different things that make 00:19:01.55\00:19:03.56 people understand life differently. 00:19:03.59\00:19:06.06 So we have a training that helps people understand. 00:19:06.09\00:19:10.05 We also talk about the incarnational ministry of Jesus. 00:19:10.08\00:19:16.45 Tell me a little about more of that. 00:19:16.48\00:19:17.66 The incarnational ministry of Christ, 00:19:17.69\00:19:20.11 you know, He had the comforts of heaven, 00:19:20.14\00:19:22.20 He had all that anybody would ever want 00:19:22.23\00:19:24.70 and what did He do? 00:19:24.73\00:19:25.76 He gave it up, He came into a sin-sick world 00:19:25.79\00:19:30.96 and He was born into a barn with the flies 00:19:30.99\00:19:33.49 and cockroaches and animals 00:19:33.52\00:19:35.57 and He lived His life among the people telling the stories 00:19:35.60\00:19:38.84 to the people, connecting with people, 00:19:38.87\00:19:41.01 understanding the elements that people have 00:19:41.04\00:19:43.70 and so Jesus was one among us. 00:19:43.73\00:19:47.61 And that's what mission is. 00:19:47.64\00:19:50.48 So it's not a quick sorting into deliver information 00:19:50.51\00:19:53.53 and then escape out quickly again? 00:19:53.56\00:19:55.38 We tend to do that because it's easy 00:19:55.41\00:19:58.26 but the reality is Christ commitment was until death. 00:19:58.29\00:20:01.49 That's right. 00:20:01.52\00:20:02.55 And often times we haven't considered the cost. 00:20:02.58\00:20:06.53 Thank you, Rick for joining us today. 00:20:06.56\00:20:07.88 Pleasure. 00:20:07.91\00:20:08.94 And viewers at home, please pray for tentmakers. 00:20:08.97\00:20:12.22 These are people who extremely committed. 00:20:12.25\00:20:14.54 They have moved to different areas for one purpose 00:20:14.57\00:20:18.63 and that is to be a witness for Jesus Christ. 00:20:18.66\00:20:21.65 And that can be discouraging, it can be lonely at times. 00:20:21.68\00:20:25.43 Sometimes they don't know what their next step will be 00:20:25.46\00:20:27.59 and it is encouraging for them to know 00:20:27.62\00:20:29.54 that there is a world church who are there praying for them, 00:20:29.57\00:20:33.12 supporting them, who care for them. 00:20:33.15\00:20:35.23 If you want to find out more information 00:20:35.48\00:20:36.89 about tent making just go to AdvetistMission.org. 00:20:36.92\00:20:40.50 Of the Tanzanian shore of Lake Victoria 00:20:48.99\00:20:51.50 lies the city of Mwanza, nicknamed the Rock City, 00:20:51.53\00:20:55.17 it is home to more than 30 growing Adventist churches. 00:20:55.20\00:20:58.61 This growth happened in such a fast rate. 00:20:58.64\00:21:01.55 Churches are being planted in communities 00:21:01.58\00:21:03.10 throughout Mwanza and beyond. 00:21:03.13\00:21:05.54 The members here are on fire for the Lord 00:21:05.57\00:21:08.06 and the mission of the church. 00:21:08.09\00:21:09.63 One of these members is Priska. 00:21:21.21\00:21:23.24 She is dedicated to following God in any way He calls her. 00:21:23.27\00:21:26.97 Throughout the week she works hard to support a modest life. 00:21:32.05\00:21:35.97 Priska sells vegetables and herbs at a local market. 00:21:36.00\00:21:39.06 And many of which have medicinal values. 00:21:39.09\00:21:41.83 She works long days in the market looking forward 00:21:41.86\00:21:44.14 to the Sabbath when she can rest and spend time with Jesus. 00:21:44.17\00:21:48.15 From her earnings, Priska keeps only what she needs to survive 00:21:48.18\00:21:51.44 and the rest is given to the church. 00:21:51.47\00:21:53.18 At home Priska lives in humble quarters. 00:21:58.41\00:22:01.88 She praises God for what she has 00:22:01.91\00:22:03.70 and loyally spends time with Him. 00:22:03.73\00:22:06.20 Outside her home she allows people 00:22:06.23\00:22:07.69 to use her property to create bricks. 00:22:07.72\00:22:10.53 The small amount of money that comes from this 00:22:10.56\00:22:12.41 goes directly to the church. 00:22:12.44\00:22:14.60 She doesn't keep a single coin for herself. 00:22:14.63\00:22:17.67 She feels strongly that God will provide for her 00:22:17.70\00:22:19.73 as long as she is faithful to Him. 00:22:19.76\00:22:23.08 Priska and other members at Mwanza are committed 00:22:23.11\00:22:25.31 to the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:22:25.34\00:22:28.23 They willingly sacrifice what they have 00:22:28.26\00:22:30.47 so that they can help others learn about Jesus. 00:22:30.50\00:22:34.30 Here in Mwanza there is a great need for a hospital. 00:22:34.33\00:22:38.02 The small Adventist health clinic here is overcrowded 00:22:38.05\00:22:40.57 because peoplein the community trust Adventist doctors. 00:22:40.60\00:22:44.78 The members here give everything they can 00:22:44.81\00:22:46.54 so that they can see a hospital here some day. 00:22:46.57\00:22:49.65 Construction has already began, 00:22:49.68\00:22:51.20 thanks to the faithful giving of the local church members. 00:22:51.23\00:22:54.77 On this particular Sabbath 33 goats, 3 cows 00:22:54.80\00:22:58.65 and one sheep are pledged to the church 00:22:58.68\00:23:00.29 so that they can be sold 00:23:00.32\00:23:01.52 and the money can be used to continue building. 00:23:01.55\00:23:04.99 Thank you for supporting projects like this 00:23:05.02\00:23:07.13 around the world
