Former General Conference president and former missionary, 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.02 Dr. Jan Paulsen and others talk about their memories of mission 00:00:04.05\00:00:08.32 and church planting in East Central Africa, 00:00:08.35\00:00:10.44 all that and much more 00:00:10.47\00:00:12.12 right here on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:12.15\00:00:14.56 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:25.17\00:00:27.04 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:27.07\00:00:30.62 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, go. 00:00:30.65\00:00:35.57 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:35.60\00:00:40.44 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:40.47\00:00:44.76 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:44.79\00:00:52.46 I am Gary Krause. 00:00:52.49\00:00:54.21 Have you ever wanted to talk to a former missionary 00:00:54.24\00:00:56.47 and hear their stories? 00:00:56.50\00:00:58.06 Well, today we'll be doing just that. 00:00:58.09\00:01:00.28 I'll be taking with Dr. Jan Paulsen 00:01:00.31\00:01:02.01 about his time as a missionary in Africa 00:01:02.04\00:01:04.39 and the events in his life that led his family 00:01:04.42\00:01:07.17 from Norway to West Africa. 00:01:07.20\00:01:09.76 We'll also be talking with Ricky Oliveras 00:01:09.79\00:01:12.02 who recently visited church planting projects 00:01:12.05\00:01:14.74 in the East Central Africa region. 00:01:14.77\00:01:17.42 And we'll visit a Global Mission pioneer who's planting a church 00:01:17.45\00:01:20.67 in a democratic people's republic of Congo. 00:01:20.70\00:01:24.14 But first up let's meet some other former missionaries 00:01:24.17\00:01:27.10 in a video we call "In Their Own Words." 00:01:27.13\00:01:30.76 Many words and phrases are used to describe 00:01:31.95\00:01:34.04 the missionary experience, adventurous, compassionate, 00:01:34.07\00:01:37.83 dedicated, patience, open to exotic foods, 00:01:37.86\00:01:41.29 new languages, willing to transplant their entire families 00:01:41.32\00:01:44.56 thousands of miles away from friends and loved ones. 00:01:44.59\00:01:47.78 And did we mention adventurous? 00:01:47.81\00:01:50.05 Why would someone leave everything 00:01:50.08\00:01:51.76 that is familiar to them, step out of their comfort zone 00:01:51.79\00:01:55.08 and travel to far off lands to share hope and change lives? 00:01:55.11\00:01:58.88 How does someone decide that they want to be a missionary? 00:01:58.91\00:02:02.20 Some of the Adventist church's pioneering missionaries 00:02:02.23\00:02:05.14 shared their experiences, challenges and triumphs. 00:02:05.17\00:02:08.68 Here's their story, In Their Own Words. 00:02:08.71\00:02:11.75 The whole experience is humbling 00:02:13.89\00:02:16.95 because we realized all along 00:02:16.98\00:02:19.04 that what we were doing was nothing, 00:02:19.07\00:02:23.84 it was the things that God did well, through us 00:02:23.87\00:02:27.96 because we had lots of hard experiences 00:02:27.99\00:02:31.89 and lots of disappointments. 00:02:31.92\00:02:35.33 But God overruled in so much of that, 00:02:35.36\00:02:39.61 that it was really a blessing to us, 00:02:39.64\00:02:44.96 probably more of a blessing to us 00:02:44.99\00:02:46.62 than most of the people that we were working for. 00:02:46.65\00:02:49.92 But we were certainly happy that the Lord took over 00:02:49.95\00:02:53.85 and did something for them too. 00:02:53.88\00:02:56.46 So what was your thought when you got that call from GC 00:02:56.49\00:03:00.64 saying want you to go overseas? 00:03:00.67\00:03:02.52 We just answered God, thank God. 00:03:02.55\00:03:06.54 Take that as an opportunity. 00:03:06.57\00:03:09.59 We said, where is it? 00:03:09.62\00:03:12.99 We went to the library, even to read about it, 00:03:13.02\00:03:16.75 it was kind of a cultural shock. 00:03:16.78\00:03:18.72 But I never once said, we are not going there, are we? 00:03:18.75\00:03:25.44 I mean, it just seem like well, that's where we were going. 00:03:25.47\00:03:28.68 Those earliest missionaries still performed 00:03:28.71\00:03:32.76 I think a very important task. 00:03:32.79\00:03:35.45 They are people of incredible courage and commitment. 00:03:35.48\00:03:38.84 And certainly, certainly living conditions were long ways 00:03:38.87\00:03:45.69 from what it was it is in the States 00:03:45.72\00:03:48.29 in the old days when we went over there. 00:03:48.32\00:03:50.58 Just imagine no electricity and no running water. 00:03:50.61\00:03:54.36 Just lacking those two things what a difference it makes. 00:03:54.39\00:03:58.93 They made you feel like asking the question, 00:04:01.35\00:04:05.03 well, I did, what on the world I am here for? 00:04:05.06\00:04:09.43 But when these boys made the statement 00:04:09.46\00:04:11.81 if they would never knows Jesus, 00:04:11.84\00:04:13.21 if weren't in Borneo mountains of Laos. 00:04:13.24\00:04:16.22 I knew what the Lord took us there for. 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.59 For me now, that I am 92, going on 93, 00:04:19.87\00:04:25.55 they want to know how come you live so long, you see. 00:04:25.58\00:04:28.99 And I said, look, I-- I'll say it in Chinese, shall I? 00:04:29.02\00:04:34.11 (Speaking in foreign language) 00:04:34.14\00:04:40.21 Now I must do what is right in God's sight, 00:04:40.24\00:04:43.79 I must do the right thing by other people, 00:04:43.82\00:04:47.47 I must do the right thing by my contentious 00:04:47.50\00:04:50.47 and that gives us good health and a longer life. 00:04:50.50\00:04:55.46 Whatever we opening we can have it should be something 00:04:57.11\00:05:00.93 that's understandable to them now 00:05:00.96\00:05:03.52 and then they will cultivate their friendship 00:05:03.55\00:05:08.09 and we will talk further about things like that. 00:05:08.12\00:05:12.12 I was in the back of the jeep 00:05:12.15\00:05:14.02 and I stood up there and i looked at the sky, 00:05:14.05\00:05:17.28 it was incredibly hot and incredibly beautiful 00:05:17.31\00:05:20.99 just as blue as it could be 00:05:21.02\00:05:23.83 and I thought that same sky is over Washington State, 00:05:23.86\00:05:31.79 that's were my parents were living and my sister. 00:05:31.82\00:05:36.08 I said, oh, I wished I was there. 00:05:36.11\00:05:40.99 But you know, then after a while you really didn't miss it. 00:05:41.02\00:05:46.62 I mean, you just-- this is home 00:05:46.65\00:05:49.18 and that's where you go to visit where you go for furlong. 00:05:49.21\00:05:52.43 It was hard for me at first, 00:05:52.46\00:05:55.46 I don't about know about him so much 00:05:55.49\00:05:57.14 but I love him and he was there 00:05:57.17\00:06:00.77 and without him I couldn't have handled it. 00:06:00.80\00:06:03.10 My first six years of life, 00:06:03.13\00:06:06.20 actually it was about seven years of life 00:06:06.23\00:06:07.97 were spend in what we would call a mission field 00:06:08.00\00:06:10.21 in Thailand for most of that time. 00:06:10.24\00:06:13.04 And for a number of years there in Thailand 00:06:13.07\00:06:16.63 it was away from civilization up in the mountains. 00:06:16.66\00:06:21.02 And to see the way my parents lived their lives, 00:06:21.05\00:06:25.95 way they related to the people that we were there to serve 00:06:25.98\00:06:29.38 is still an inspiration to me. 00:06:29.41\00:06:32.21 If I thought about it too much 00:06:37.47\00:06:38.97 I could become emotional even in thinking about it. 00:06:39.00\00:06:42.36 With missionaries trying to reach 00:06:42.39\00:06:43.96 the most remote corners of the world, 00:06:43.99\00:06:46.19 the use of small airplanes opened up endless possibilities. 00:06:46.22\00:06:50.01 Dick Hall was one of the first missionary pilots in Asia 00:06:50.04\00:06:53.37 and the first in Laos. 00:06:53.40\00:06:55.46 When we got transferred up into Laos 00:06:55.49\00:06:57.57 there was no other transportation except by air. 00:06:57.60\00:07:02.18 And, or you could walk. 00:07:02.21\00:07:05.78 It might take you a couple of weeks to walk in there 00:07:05.81\00:07:08.30 but there was no river transport and just only by airplane. 00:07:08.33\00:07:14.05 And we saw really the need of an airplane at that time. 00:07:14.08\00:07:18.43 It's been thrilling to go over there just couple of years ago 00:07:18.46\00:07:21.80 and people come up to me and tell me you know, 00:07:21.83\00:07:24.66 if it hadn't been for us take them out in airplane 00:07:24.69\00:07:27.43 they would have die. 00:07:27.46\00:07:29.34 And then also every place we need an airstrip 00:07:29.37\00:07:32.85 we raised up a church. 00:07:32.88\00:07:35.42 And then several churches from that airstrip 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.53 we walked short distance to other villages and raised it up. 00:07:37.56\00:07:40.98 So the airplane is really was 00:07:41.01\00:07:45.25 a God sent assets to our mission work. 00:07:45.28\00:07:49.00 And I was sorry that mission flying 00:07:49.03\00:07:51.88 didn't carry on there in South East Asia 00:07:51.91\00:07:54.31 because I still believe that with an airplane 00:07:54.34\00:07:58.03 they can go way into the island of Borneo, 00:07:58.06\00:08:02.07 places where they can't go unless they can build airstrips, 00:08:02.10\00:08:06.37 otherwise it takes days and weeks to go into there. 00:08:06.40\00:08:09.46 But not long after I left they quit the flying program. 00:08:09.49\00:08:12.58 And I felt that was real mistake. 00:08:12.61\00:08:17.57 So I believe the airplane is still 00:08:17.60\00:08:20.81 a valuable asset in spreading of mission. 00:08:20.84\00:08:24.10 I think early on the church realize 00:08:24.13\00:08:26.82 that there was tremendous needs in the world 00:08:26.85\00:08:29.19 and there was as greater focus on trying to meet those needs, 00:08:29.22\00:08:33.09 a greater focus on trying to spread the gospel. 00:08:33.12\00:08:36.42 And more recently, again the shift is been were. 00:08:36.45\00:08:39.81 We've done well, most of the world already knows 00:08:39.84\00:08:42.72 and so there's this idea that it's not as necessary now 00:08:42.75\00:08:46.94 when that could be further from the truth. 00:08:46.97\00:08:50.53 Tell you the thing that I am most proud of 00:08:50.56\00:08:53.84 and I can say its really proud 00:08:53.87\00:08:56.20 is that the Lord is able to use us 00:08:56.23\00:08:59.80 and reaching some of the mountain people, 00:08:59.83\00:09:03.52 the people of Laos that have went to early school 00:09:03.55\00:09:09.79 and then they became pastors. 00:09:09.82\00:09:14.19 And now they've gone out, raised up churches, 00:09:14.22\00:09:18.31 being mission presidents, pastors 00:09:18.34\00:09:21.74 and I feel that that is really makes me feel good to think 00:09:21.77\00:09:27.34 that the Lord was able to use us 00:09:27.37\00:09:30.56 in helping to bring the gospel to these people. 00:09:30.59\00:09:33.41 If we are still interested in mission and I pray that we are 00:09:33.44\00:09:39.17 then mission offering would still be needed. 00:09:39.20\00:09:43.01 I don't know what I could say it more bluntly than that 00:09:45.55\00:09:48.27 and I am not a big sales person, 00:09:48.30\00:09:52.27 I am not real good at asking people for money 00:09:52.30\00:09:55.47 but if we are serious about mission 00:09:55.50\00:09:57.63 then we need to put our money where our mouth is. 00:09:57.66\00:10:01.08 We would like to encourage each one. 00:10:01.11\00:10:05.05 Let's be liberal with what God puts in our hands 00:10:05.08\00:10:09.44 and use it to be a blessing to help those in need 00:10:09.47\00:10:14.41 and specially those that don't know Jesus and mission service. 00:10:14.44\00:10:20.16 Adventist missionaries changed 00:10:20.19\00:10:22.30 not only the lives of those they work with 00:10:22.33\00:10:24.56 but their own lives are forever transform by their experiences. 00:10:24.59\00:10:28.59 Although the role of missionaries 00:10:28.62\00:10:30.28 has changed over the years 00:10:30.31\00:10:32.10 they will always be on the frontlines 00:10:32.13\00:10:34.22 playing a vital role in the mission of the church. 00:10:34.25\00:10:37.46 Thank you, for you prayers and support 00:10:37.49\00:10:39.33 of missions around the world. 00:10:39.36\00:10:41.12 For more information about missions 00:10:41.15\00:10:43.73 please visit AdventistMission.org. 00:10:43.76\00:10:47.10 It's my pleasure to introduce Pastor Jan Paulsen 00:10:49.78\00:10:53.15 who is known to many of us 00:10:53.18\00:10:54.78 as the former president of World Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:10:54.81\00:10:59.07 Many of us known him as an administrator and as a leader 00:10:59.10\00:11:02.65 but he also served for several years 00:11:02.68\00:11:05.67 as a missionary in West Africa. 00:11:05.70\00:11:08.17 Dr. Jan Paulsen, thank you so much for joining us. 00:11:08.20\00:11:10.53 West Africa, a long way away for a young man from Norway? 00:11:10.56\00:11:15.70 Yes. Yes. 00:11:15.73\00:11:17.55 It is-- it is many, many years now since we-- 00:11:17.58\00:11:21.11 since my young and my wife 00:11:21.14\00:11:22.78 and our very young daughter went tot Ghana, 1962. 00:11:22.81\00:11:29.54 So it's over 50 years since that. 00:11:29.57\00:11:36.22 1962 exactly, 50 years, 51 years since we went there. 00:11:36.25\00:11:41.79 There was--Africa as a whole went through the turmoil, 00:11:41.82\00:11:45.71 they just come out of colonialism 00:11:45.74\00:11:48.63 and they beginning to experience their freedom. 00:11:48.66\00:11:52.69 And that had a series of challenges also 00:11:52.72\00:11:55.50 for people who came from overseas 00:11:55.53\00:11:58.08 to fit into the system and to help them build nation. 00:11:58.11\00:12:03.26 Now, what were you doing there? 00:12:03.29\00:12:05.20 The first-- we were in West Africa for six years. 00:12:05.23\00:12:08.30 The first two years we served in Ghana 00:12:08.33\00:12:10.82 at a teacher training college that we have 00:12:10.85\00:12:13.94 up in outside Kumasi in Ashanti country. 00:12:13.97\00:12:18.05 Our church is very, very strong in that part of Ghana. 00:12:18.08\00:12:23.21 And for two years I taught Bible 00:12:23.24\00:12:26.23 to students who were in training to become teachers. 00:12:26.26\00:12:32.66 And I was pastor also for the local college church. 00:12:32.69\00:12:36.38 So it was a mixture of these two things. 00:12:36.41\00:12:39.18 A wonderful, wonderful time, wonderful life. 00:12:39.21\00:12:43.52 And from Ghana you went to-- From Ghana we went to Nigeria. 00:12:43.55\00:12:46.76 We had just established a new institution 00:12:46.79\00:12:50.81 for the training of our ministers. 00:12:50.84\00:12:53.48 It called Adventist College of West Africa at that time. 00:12:53.51\00:12:56.95 Today, 50 years later, it is the largest university 00:12:56.98\00:13:01.43 that we have as a church globally. 00:13:01.46\00:13:03.55 Is that right? With 10,000 plus students. 00:13:03.58\00:13:06.40 Wow. It's a wonderful institution. 00:13:06.43\00:13:10.48 So if you have a good feeling 00:13:10.51\00:13:12.36 about having being part of the infancy 00:13:12.39\00:13:14.68 or what has become an incredible instruction. 00:13:14.71\00:13:18.05 I came there to teach theology to our students 00:13:18.08\00:13:22.61 and within a fairly short time I was also the principle 00:13:22.64\00:13:27.30 or president of the college for a short period 00:13:27.33\00:13:29.87 before we went to Europe. 00:13:29.90\00:13:31.78 Now, Dr. Paulson, it must be very rewarding 00:13:31.81\00:13:34.05 to see young men that you helped train, 00:13:34.08\00:13:36.84 start to take leadership positions in the church. 00:13:36.87\00:13:39.54 Yes, it is that. 00:13:39.57\00:13:42.43 One of the things, one of the remarkable, 00:13:42.46\00:13:44.42 maybe not so remarkable but it is reality 00:13:44.45\00:13:47.14 that we should take note of is when we came to Ghana 00:13:47.17\00:13:51.45 there were 11, 000 Adventists in Ghana as a whole. 00:13:51.48\00:13:56.25 And one organizational structure a mission structure. 00:13:56.28\00:14:00.72 Today, they have a union, they have seven conferences 00:14:00.75\00:14:06.02 and almost half a million members in Ghana alone. 00:14:06.05\00:14:09.65 The missionaries were key person in establishing 00:14:09.68\00:14:12.22 an infrastructure for our church in Africa 00:14:12.25\00:14:15.82 but the explosive growth that we've seen as a church in Africa 00:14:15.85\00:14:19.70 happened when National Leadership and Ministry 00:14:19.73\00:14:23.81 took control of the development of the work. 00:14:23.84\00:14:25.87 So it's been a wonderful interplay 00:14:25.90\00:14:27.90 between the work of missionaries 00:14:27.93\00:14:30.57 in setting up a strong infrastructure 00:14:30.60\00:14:33.06 and the phenomenal growth that our national ministers 00:14:33.09\00:14:37.50 and leaders have made possible in Africa. 00:14:37.53\00:14:41.94 Now when you were serving as president for some time there 00:14:41.97\00:14:45.06 the secretary for the World Church 00:14:45.09\00:14:47.68 was one of your former students. 00:14:47.71\00:14:49.34 Yes, that is right. Yes. 00:14:49.37\00:14:51.60 The one at the world headquarters 00:14:51.63\00:14:53.60 when I served there as president the one who was the secretary. 00:14:53.63\00:14:57.32 You are right, Pastor Bediako, 00:14:57.35\00:14:58.91 he was my student at the Bekwae in Ghana. 00:14:58.94\00:15:02.11 And then he was my student for the four years, 00:15:02.14\00:15:04.36 he was at college in Nigeria. 00:15:04.39\00:15:07.40 And yeah, I have a wonderfully warm feeling when I see that 00:15:07.43\00:15:13.80 some of the current ministers or leaders in our church 00:15:13.83\00:15:16.91 whom I had the privilege to have as my students back then 00:15:16.94\00:15:22.84 have responded wonderfully to the call 00:15:22.87\00:15:25.23 that God has placed in their hearts 00:15:25.26\00:15:27.46 and taken hold of the assignment He has given to them. 00:15:27.49\00:15:30.87 Demonstrate the richness of their spiritual gifts 00:15:30.90\00:15:33.99 and their work has gone forward. 00:15:34.02\00:15:36.84 Dr. Paulson, it's fashionable in some circles today 00:15:36.87\00:15:40.71 to speak very negatively of missionaries 00:15:40.74\00:15:43.04 that their cultural imperialist, 00:15:43.07\00:15:44.86 that they have done more damage than good. 00:15:44.89\00:15:47.03 How do you view that? 00:15:47.06\00:15:49.07 Oh, I think that is a caricature which is unfortunate 00:15:49.10\00:15:52.76 because that generally is not true. 00:15:52.79\00:15:55.17 You will find the odd one maybe 00:15:55.20\00:15:57.49 who is not as wise as he or she should be 00:15:57.52\00:16:00.34 but by enlarge the workers who go out as missionaries 00:16:00.37\00:16:04.77 men and women they do it because they have 00:16:04.80\00:16:08.85 a strong calling in their hearts and they love the assignment, 00:16:08.88\00:16:14.86 they love the people, they love the Lord, 00:16:14.89\00:16:17.35 they want to bring up their best skills 00:16:17.38\00:16:19.34 that training the talents to see that the church is made strong 00:16:19.37\00:16:23.94 and that the name of God is on it. 00:16:23.97\00:16:27.09 They have no agenda, they are no politically driven. 00:16:27.12\00:16:30.12 No, they go there to serve the Lord. 00:16:30.15\00:16:33.02 Look, we have only one master, only one. 00:16:33.05\00:16:37.00 And at the end of the day we're gonna face Him 00:16:37.03\00:16:39.46 and He's going to say, how did you do this? 00:16:39.49\00:16:43.21 And so there is a-- I think a close attachment 00:16:43.24\00:16:48.25 between the missionaries and the one who has called them. 00:16:48.28\00:16:51.63 And they go there with pure hearts. 00:16:51.66\00:16:54.63 Dr. Paulson, I wish we had more time. 00:16:54.66\00:16:56.38 Thank you, so much for sharing with us. With pleasure. 00:16:56.41\00:16:58.79 And viewers at home, there are still hundreds of missionaries 00:16:58.82\00:17:01.79 serving all across the globe. 00:17:01.82\00:17:04.06 Even in West Africa where Dr. Paulson served 00:17:04.09\00:17:06.77 so man years ago. 00:17:06.80\00:17:08.27 Please remember them in your prayers. 00:17:08.30\00:17:10.14 It encourages them to know 00:17:10.17\00:17:11.51 that a world church is praying and supporting them. 00:17:11.54\00:17:14.73 It's my pleasure to introduce our guest Ricky Oliveras. 00:18:00.29\00:18:03.79 Ricky, thank you for joining us. 00:18:03.82\00:18:05.28 Thanks for having me. 00:18:05.31\00:18:06.34 You are one of our video producers 00:18:06.37\00:18:08.13 and you do some beautiful video work that we see 00:18:08.16\00:18:10.58 right here on this program, thanks for that. 00:18:10.61\00:18:13.48 I also see some of your work on the front cover 00:18:13.51\00:18:16.65 on this new mission magazine, Mission 360. 00:18:16.68\00:18:21.14 This is literally off the press last week. Yeah. 00:18:21.17\00:18:24.95 And more importantly 00:18:24.98\00:18:27.38 this is not just going to be a print publication 00:18:27.41\00:18:29.84 but it is an online digital magazine. 00:18:29.87\00:18:33.23 So what sort of platforms will be able to carry this magazine? 00:18:33.26\00:18:36.43 You should be able to find it on the iPad, on Kindle, 00:18:36.46\00:18:39.93 on you know, all different kinds of tablets and computer. 00:18:39.96\00:18:42.95 Yeah, fantastic. 00:18:42.98\00:18:44.39 So you just go online to mission360mag.org 00:18:44.42\00:18:49.39 and this is full of stories of mission, 00:18:49.42\00:18:52.56 exciting stories about church planting, Adventist world radio, 00:18:52.59\00:18:56.67 Global Mission pioneers, centers of influence, 00:18:56.70\00:18:59.73 urban mission and it's totally free. 00:18:59.76\00:19:02.00 Okay, Ricky. Yeah. 00:19:02.03\00:19:03.40 Church planting, the heart beat of Adventism. 00:19:03.43\00:19:06.52 You were recently in East Central Africa, 00:19:06.55\00:19:10.56 what did you see there? 00:19:10.59\00:19:11.71 Well, I saw a lot but some of the things I saw were you know, 00:19:11.74\00:19:17.03 new congregations being formed 00:19:17.06\00:19:19.56 and it was really cool to see 00:19:19.59\00:19:21.12 because in East Central Africa everybody is in favor, 00:19:21.15\00:19:26.76 everybody is dedicated to building new churches. 00:19:26.79\00:19:30.12 From the administration where they are trying 00:19:30.15\00:19:33.87 to start new programs to build new churches 00:19:33.90\00:19:35.73 to the pastors where they are you know, 00:19:35.76\00:19:38.35 they are reaching out to the community 00:19:38.38\00:19:39.92 and down to the members where the pastors are, 00:19:39.95\00:19:43.04 you know, telling their members 00:19:43.07\00:19:44.53 you know, go talk to your neighbors, 00:19:44.56\00:19:46.41 go, go bring them to church, 00:19:46.44\00:19:48.50 you know, let's build our churches. 00:19:48.53\00:19:50.50 And so that was really cool to see 00:19:50.53\00:19:53.20 because it's not often that you find 00:19:53.23\00:19:55.95 everybody on the same page about something so. 00:19:55.98\00:19:59.33 So when you say build churches 00:19:59.36\00:20:01.14 you are not talking about building buildings, 00:20:01.17\00:20:02.49 you are talking about starting new congregations. 00:20:02.52\00:20:05.00 Right. Exactly. 00:20:05.03\00:20:08.19 Churches usually being you know, in small groups 00:20:08.22\00:20:11.07 and somebody going to their neighbors' house 00:20:11.10\00:20:14.02 and offering to pray with them, reading the Bible with them, 00:20:14.05\00:20:17.13 you know, something very simple 00:20:17.16\00:20:18.54 and that builds up where they invite another neighbor. 00:20:18.57\00:20:22.29 And you know, things like that can spiral 00:20:22.32\00:20:25.65 and from there buildings come up of course 00:20:25.68\00:20:29.79 once you get enough people. 00:20:29.82\00:20:31.92 Building will come up in certain area 00:20:31.95\00:20:34.73 I'll give you an example, when I was in Mwanza, Tanzania, 00:20:34.76\00:20:38.14 they have over 30 churches there 00:20:38.17\00:20:41.26 but they didn't start off with 30 churches. 00:20:41.29\00:20:43.47 They started off with a few churches 00:20:43.50\00:20:45.78 and people there reaching out 00:20:45.81\00:20:48.21 to their neighbors building congregations. 00:20:48.24\00:20:52.01 And one person that I saw there was, her name was Priska 00:20:52.04\00:20:55.83 and she is really adamant about out and visiting 00:20:55.86\00:21:01.19 you know, doing studies with people 00:21:01.22\00:21:04.11 and just reading the Bible with people. 00:21:04.14\00:21:06.14 And it's contagious because you see the work she does, 00:21:06.17\00:21:11.08 you know, it's like a chain to build new people. 00:21:11.11\00:21:16.52 Now our frontline church planters 00:21:16.55\00:21:18.64 are called Global Mission pioneers. 00:21:18.67\00:21:21.13 Did you meet some pioneers? 00:21:21.16\00:21:22.76 I did meet some pioneers when I was in the city of Kinshasa 00:21:22.79\00:21:27.20 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 00:21:27.23\00:21:30.26 I always like to try to you know, 00:21:30.29\00:21:31.68 at least meet a couple pioneers. 00:21:31.71\00:21:33.58 So I asked the pastor that I was with you know, 00:21:33.61\00:21:35.63 tomorrow can we talk to a Global Mission pioneer, 00:21:35.66\00:21:38.46 maybe follow him around for the day? 00:21:38.49\00:21:41.12 And he said, "Oh yeah. Sure, it's no problem." 00:21:41.15\00:21:43.76 So the next day we get to the church 00:21:43.79\00:21:46.46 where they are gonna meet us 00:21:46.49\00:21:48.71 and there were 20 or 30 Global Mission pioneers in the room. 00:21:48.74\00:21:52.49 So it was overwhelming for me to see that because you know, 00:21:52.52\00:21:57.09 I was expecting one or two people to talk to. 00:21:57.12\00:22:00.28 And so it was overwhelming 00:22:00.31\00:22:01.78 but also very encouraging to see that 00:22:01.81\00:22:04.66 because there are so many people who are wiling to go out 00:22:04.69\00:22:09.12 and serve and reach out to their communities. 00:22:09.15\00:22:12.69 Tell me about one of the pioneers. 00:22:12.72\00:22:14.63 Well, one of the pioneers I followed, 00:22:14.66\00:22:16.77 his name was Serge and he--we started off, 00:22:16.80\00:22:20.76 we met him at the church and we went to his house 00:22:20.79\00:22:23.37 where you know, he was getting ready for 00:22:23.40\00:22:25.83 to meet a group of people that he witnesses to. 00:22:25.86\00:22:30.11 So we met him at his house, he was reading his Bible 00:22:30.14\00:22:33.45 and what he does everyday, every few days he goes 00:22:33.48\00:22:37.95 and meet this group but he has to walk 00:22:37.98\00:22:40.08 you know, miles and kilometers there, 00:22:40.11\00:22:43.10 kilometers and kilometers to see his small congregation. 00:22:43.13\00:22:48.40 And they meet on this property own by a church member. 00:22:48.43\00:22:52.62 This church member donated some land, 00:22:52.65\00:22:55.32 their backyard basically to build the little church. 00:22:55.35\00:22:58.22 And this church is pretty unique 00:22:58.25\00:22:59.86 because it's just made out of sheets you know. 00:22:59.89\00:23:03.61 Sheets of metal. No, they are like bed sheets. 00:23:03.64\00:23:07.08 Oh, bed sheets. Yeah. 00:23:07.11\00:23:08.24 And so it's you know, it's a humble church to me then 00:23:08.27\00:23:12.17 but to them you know, that's their church. 00:23:12.20\00:23:14.39 They are very proud of it. 00:23:14.42\00:23:16.28 So to us you know, we wouldn't normally see that 00:23:16.31\00:23:18.91 here in North America a church made out of bed sheets. No. 00:23:18.94\00:23:23.67 To them that's their house of worship. Yeah. 00:23:23.70\00:23:26.46 Well, we are talking about a very poor area. 00:23:26.49\00:23:28.47 Very poor area, very poor area. 00:23:28.50\00:23:30.20 There's a-- the houses are very small, 00:23:30.23\00:23:33.89 they are--the houses are made out of you know metal sheets 00:23:33.92\00:23:37.04 and wood sometimes that you just find flying around. 00:23:37.07\00:23:40.97 Whatever you can patch your house up with. 00:23:41.00\00:23:42.92 Yeah. Amazing. 00:23:42.95\00:23:44.98 Ricky, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:23:45.01\00:23:47.22 Yeah. Thank you. 00:23:47.25\00:23:48.45 Viewers at home, you know, 00:23:48.48\00:23:50.29 many of our brothers and sisters around the world 00:23:50.32\00:23:52.64 are living below the poverty line. 00:23:52.67\00:23:55.23 Some are earning less than a dollar a day. 00:23:55.26\00:23:58.02 So it does make difference when we give our mission offerings 00:23:58.05\00:24:00.71 when we make donations to Global Mission 00:24:00.74\00:24:02.79 to help start and establish work 00:24:02.82\00:24:05.72 where otherwise it would be a challenge to begin. 00:24:05.75\00:24:08.46 Please pray for Global Mission pioneers 00:24:08.49\00:24:10.51 who are starting new congregations 00:24:10.54\00:24:12.25 all around the world. 00:24:12.28\00:24:14.03 The city of Kinshasa, 00:24:22.94\00:24:24.55 the capital of a Democratic Republic of Congo 00:24:24.58\00:24:26.85 and home to more then ten million people. 00:24:26.88\00:24:30.28 Despite the size of this city 00:24:30.31\00:24:31.72 only about 8,000 Adventists live here. 00:24:31.75\00:24:34.74 Reaching the people here comes with great challenges. 00:24:34.77\00:24:38.01 People here don't want to stop and listen, 00:24:38.04\00:24:40.16 they don't want to make time for religion. 00:24:40.19\00:24:42.76 But those who do catch a glimpse 00:24:42.79\00:24:45.57 of God's word hunger to learn more. 00:24:45.60\00:24:48.31 This is Serge, he is a Global Mission pioneer 00:24:58.05\00:25:01.00 working in this challenging city to ensure 00:25:01.03\00:25:03.27 that more people come to know Jesus. 00:25:03.30\00:25:06.12 Serge prepares at his home 00:25:06.15\00:25:07.68 to share a message of hope with a small group. 00:25:07.71\00:25:10.54 He leaves his humble home to face the vast urban jungle. 00:25:10.57\00:25:14.79 His motivation is reaching those 00:25:14.82\00:25:16.31 who have never heard the Adventist message. 00:25:16.34\00:25:19.44 He walks far to reach the makeshift church 00:25:25.87\00:25:27.84 where the people are already waiting for him. 00:25:27.87\00:25:30.53 This humble church sits on a local church member's land, 00:25:30.56\00:25:33.57 tucked away from the busyness of the street. 00:25:33.60\00:25:36.61 Its walls are made from sheets and tarps 00:25:36.64\00:25:39.75 but God welcomes all people into His house of worship. 00:25:39.78\00:25:43.28 As our pioneer greets the people he can see their hunger 00:25:43.31\00:25:46.23 to learn more of the stories and lessons from the Bible. 00:25:46.26\00:25:51.09 As they worship and reads from the Bible lives are transformed. 00:25:51.12\00:25:55.89 The small group hears the stories 00:25:55.92\00:25:57.21 of how Jesus lived on this earth to die for our sins. 00:25:57.24\00:26:00.55 This is the work of a Global Mission pioneer 00:26:06.73\00:26:09.90 to help reach the unreached people around the world. 00:26:09.93\00:26:13.44 As Global Mission pioneers they were called 00:26:13.47\00:26:15.47 not only to tell of Jesus' love ibut also to show it. 00:26:15.50\00:26:20.20 Although this urban setting 00:26:20.23\00:26:21.26 maybe a challenging place to work, 00:26:21.29\00:26:23.58 Global Mission pioneers like Serge 00:26:23.61\00:26:25.50 are willing to accept the challenge 00:26:25.53\00:26:26.83 so others can learn about Jesus. 00:26:26.86\00:26:29.93 Please pray for Global Mission pioneers here in Kinshasa 00:26:29.96\00:26:33.58 and
