I am here in Tanzania and it is hot. 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.44 But that's not stopping all these church members 00:00:03.47\00:00:05.50 from coming to worship on Sabbath. 00:00:05.53\00:00:08.10 We'll learn more about this 00:00:08.13\00:00:09.40 and what else is happening in East Africa. 00:00:09.43\00:00:11.67 For Adventist Mission, I am Ricky Alvarez 00:00:11.70\00:00:14.12 and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:14.15\00:00:16.84 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:28.99\00:00:31.44 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:31.47\00:00:34.22 He gave us a mission. 00:00:34.25\00:00:37.04 Jesus said, go. 00:00:37.07\00:00:39.63 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:39.66\00:00:44.51 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:44.54\00:00:48.87 Thank you, Ricky. 00:00:54.21\00:00:55.52 Hello, I am Gary Krause, 00:00:55.55\00:00:56.77 and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:56.80\00:00:59.20 As you just saw, we'd be talking with Ricky Alvarez 00:00:59.23\00:01:01.93 who recently returned from visiting mission projects 00:01:01.96\00:01:04.98 in the East-Central Africa region. 00:01:05.01\00:01:07.88 While there, Ricky met a formal global mission pioneer, 00:01:07.91\00:01:11.20 who I also met several years ago, 00:01:11.23\00:01:13.60 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 00:01:13.63\00:01:16.29 This pastor takes to the streets with his family 00:01:16.32\00:01:18.92 for a unique music ministry. 00:01:18.95\00:01:21.78 We'll also be talking with our special guest, Dr. Jan Paulsen, 00:01:21.81\00:01:25.37 former president of the world Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:01:25.40\00:01:29.30 He is joining us today to talk about mission challenges. 00:01:29.33\00:01:32.83 As a former missionary, educator and church leader, 00:01:32.86\00:01:36.37 Dr. Paulsen brings a unique perspective 00:01:36.40\00:01:38.86 to mission challenges facing the church. 00:01:38.89\00:01:41.61 But first up, let's visit East-Central Africa 00:01:41.64\00:01:44.44 with this video created several years ago. 00:01:44.47\00:01:47.69 Africa, a continent filled with beauty, 00:01:52.05\00:01:55.13 rich with culture, teeming with history 00:01:55.16\00:01:58.20 and filled with mission opportunities. 00:01:58.23\00:02:01.07 Welcome to the East-Central Africa division. 00:02:01.10\00:02:06.55 This region of Africa is home 00:02:06.58\00:02:08.33 to some of the most idealic scenery on earth. 00:02:08.36\00:02:11.62 Unfortunately, this beauty has been marred by war and violence. 00:02:11.65\00:02:16.63 Despite the problems this division is also home 00:02:16.66\00:02:19.21 to more Adventist church members 00:02:19.24\00:02:21.00 than any other region of the world outside of Latin America. 00:02:21.03\00:02:25.34 The East-Central Africa division is made up of 10 countries, 00:02:25.37\00:02:29.35 six of which are located in the African Great Lake's region, 00:02:29.38\00:02:33.51 four are in the 10/40 Window, 00:02:33.54\00:02:36.09 considered to be the most unreached area of the world. 00:02:36.12\00:02:39.97 In several other countries, war and violence 00:02:40.00\00:02:43.22 have taken a heavy toll impacting thousands of lives. 00:02:43.25\00:02:46.92 In countries such as the Democratic Republic 00:02:46.95\00:02:49.20 of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanada, Eritrea, and Somalia. 00:02:49.23\00:02:54.98 The years of constant struggle 00:02:55.01\00:02:57.05 has left church buildings in ruins, 00:02:57.08\00:02:59.31 scattered members and divided families. 00:02:59.34\00:03:03.26 Burundi scenic landscape has been overshadowed 00:03:03.29\00:03:07.58 by more than a decade of civil war and tribal genocide. 00:03:07.61\00:03:12.14 Small in size Burundi is a land locked equatorial nation, 00:03:12.17\00:03:16.64 in the heart of East-Central Africa, 00:03:16.67\00:03:19.06 bordered by Lake Tanganyika, 00:03:19.09\00:03:20.96 the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania. 00:03:20.99\00:03:24.43 Burundi is a land of rolling hills and deep lakes. 00:03:24.46\00:03:28.41 In the not so distant past, 00:03:28.44\00:03:30.56 Burundi was once a tourist destination. 00:03:30.59\00:03:33.99 Burundi gained its independence from Belgium in 1963, 00:03:34.02\00:03:38.09 however it was until 1993, that Burundi was able 00:03:38.12\00:03:41.56 to hold its first democratic presidential election. 00:03:41.59\00:03:45.17 Just 100 days into the new president's term, 00:03:45.20\00:03:48.84 he was killed along with Rwanda's president 00:03:48.87\00:03:51.38 when their plane was shot down. 00:03:51.41\00:03:53.91 This incident has been blamed 00:03:53.94\00:03:55.43 for sparking widespread ethnic violence 00:03:55.46\00:03:58.17 between the majority Hutu and minority Tutsi tribes 00:03:58.20\00:04:01.38 in both Burundi and Rwanda. 00:04:01.41\00:04:04.46 Today many in Burundi struggle with poverty. 00:04:04.49\00:04:08.27 Only 50% of children go to school 00:04:08.30\00:04:11.26 and HIV AIDS is set to infect approximately 1 in 15 adults. 00:04:11.29\00:04:17.14 Despite the many challenges that exist in Burundi, 00:04:17.17\00:04:20.01 the Adventist church is strong. 00:04:20.04\00:04:22.22 One person out of every 81 in the country is an Adventist. 00:04:22.25\00:04:26.09 However in Burundi, like in many other parts of the world, 00:04:26.12\00:04:30.03 Adventism has struggled to grow in the cities, 00:04:30.06\00:04:33.20 especially in the capital Bujumbura. 00:04:33.23\00:04:36.23 To meet the great needs of this city 00:04:36.26\00:04:37.89 and others around the world, the Adventist church 00:04:37.92\00:04:40.70 took up a special offering five years ago, 00:04:40.73\00:04:43.35 called 'Hope for big cities.' 00:04:43.38\00:04:45.69 Local church elder, Manuel Nahimana shares 00:04:45.72\00:04:49.52 how 'Hope for big cities' has impacted Bujumbura. 00:04:49.55\00:04:55.47 This initiative has not only helped us to grow this church, 00:04:55.50\00:04:58.87 but it also had helped teach us how to become evangelist. 00:04:58.90\00:05:03.03 When this program was started, 00:05:03.06\00:05:04.31 we had only three organized churches in Bujumbura, 00:05:04.34\00:05:07.31 but now we have four. 00:05:07.34\00:05:09.18 We had only three companies but now we have 11. 00:05:09.21\00:05:12.42 Our evangelistic activities are still going on. 00:05:12.45\00:05:15.68 For example when the program first started 00:05:15.71\00:05:17.76 we had 200 members in the Kinyosha church, 00:05:17.79\00:05:20.61 but now we have almost doubled that figure. 00:05:20.64\00:05:23.44 We continue doing evangelism not just in our neighborhood, 00:05:23.47\00:05:26.53 but in the rest of Bujumbura as well. 00:05:26.56\00:05:31.43 In addition to the positive impact 00:05:31.46\00:05:33.70 that 'hope for big cities' 00:05:33.73\00:05:35.04 is having on the city's spiritual health, 00:05:35.07\00:05:37.36 Adventist plan to build a new hospital 00:05:37.39\00:05:39.68 in the heart of Bujumbura. 00:05:39.71\00:05:41.79 For years the cramped clinic 00:05:41.82\00:05:43.21 has been the church's main outreach in the city. 00:05:43.24\00:05:46.40 Church leaders hope a new larger hospital, 00:05:46.43\00:05:49.43 will help touch lives and extend the church's 00:05:49.46\00:05:52.16 physical healing in Bujumbura as well. 00:05:52.19\00:05:54.66 Neighboring Rwanda shares much of Burundi's violent past. 00:05:58.86\00:06:03.22 In the early 1960s, ethnic violence sparked 00:06:03.25\00:06:06.54 between the Hutus and the Tutsis, 00:06:06.57\00:06:08.65 displaced some 150,000 Rwandanese 00:06:08.68\00:06:14.21 and then in the early 1990s, tribal violence exploded, 00:06:14.24\00:06:18.47 leading to the genocide of one million people 00:06:18.50\00:06:21.86 and sending some two million refugees 00:06:21.89\00:06:24.65 fleeing for their lives. 00:06:24.68\00:06:27.08 Despite all the unrest, 00:06:27.11\00:06:29.01 the Adventist church continues to grow. 00:06:29.04\00:06:31.92 Today it has one of the highest ratios of 00:06:31.95\00:06:34.54 Adventist population of any country in the world. 00:06:34.57\00:06:38.28 One Adventist for every 22 people. 00:06:38.31\00:06:42.62 In addition to the human toll, 00:06:42.65\00:06:44.70 the Adventist church has stated 00:06:44.73\00:06:46.35 a considerable amount of property loss 00:06:46.38\00:06:48.50 during the latest round of violence. 00:06:48.53\00:06:51.14 One of the losses was the Adventist University 00:06:51.17\00:06:53.42 of Central Africa campus. 00:06:53.45\00:06:55.92 Fortunately the Rwandan government 00:06:55.95\00:06:58.13 gave the Adventist church a new campus, 00:06:58.16\00:07:00.36 in the heart of the capital city, Kigali. 00:07:00.39\00:07:04.77 Here on this campus, facilities are limited. 00:07:04.80\00:07:08.03 There is only one classroom block 00:07:08.06\00:07:10.45 and a few administrative offices 00:07:10.48\00:07:12.29 for a university of some 2,200 students. 00:07:12.32\00:07:15.78 Many of whom are not Adventists. 00:07:15.81\00:07:18.23 This school desperately needs a large multi-purpose room 00:07:18.26\00:07:21.53 to service a lecture hall and church. 00:07:21.56\00:07:24.00 The building is underway, but far from finished. 00:07:24.03\00:07:27.53 Part of these quarters 13th Sabbath offering 00:07:27.56\00:07:30.36 will help complete this building. 00:07:30.39\00:07:32.80 The East-Central Africa division also includes countries 00:07:36.29\00:07:40.53 such as Eritrea, Somalia, and Djibouti 00:07:40.56\00:07:44.04 with fall within the 10/40 Window. 00:07:44.07\00:07:46.72 The 10/40 Window is home 00:07:46.75\00:07:48.43 to more than 2/3rds of the earth's population. 00:07:48.46\00:07:51.55 Many of the world's major religions. 00:07:51.58\00:07:53.82 The largest and fastest growing cities and fewest Christians. 00:07:53.85\00:07:58.85 Located on the horn of Africa, 00:07:58.88\00:08:01.09 Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations in the world. 00:08:01.12\00:08:05.21 Many believe that biblical knowledge 00:08:05.24\00:08:07.23 first came to Ethiopia following the Queen of Sheba's visit 00:08:07.26\00:08:10.78 to the court of King Solomon, 00:08:10.81\00:08:12.56 long before the time of Christ. 00:08:12.59\00:08:14.89 The queen brought back with her Jewish priest and Levites, 00:08:14.92\00:08:18.57 who left a spiritual impression on the land. 00:08:18.60\00:08:21.64 The first Adventist missionaries arrived in Ethiopia 00:08:21.67\00:08:24.86 nearly 90 years ago, they established schools, 00:08:24.89\00:08:29.07 clinics, a press and a hospital in the capital city Addis Ababa. 00:08:29.10\00:08:34.62 Despite the country's long history of Judeo-Christianity, 00:08:34.65\00:08:38.53 the church in Ethiopia unlike Burundi and Rwanda, 00:08:38.56\00:08:41.91 has struggled to grow. 00:08:41.94\00:08:43.89 In vast regions of the country, 00:08:43.92\00:08:45.88 people have yet to meet a Christian, 00:08:45.91\00:08:48.41 this makes Ethiopia one of the challenging areas 00:08:48.44\00:08:51.52 for the Adventist church. 00:08:51.55\00:08:53.72 The Adventist church in Ethiopia is working 00:08:53.75\00:08:56.29 to send global mission pioneers 00:08:56.32\00:08:58.56 to some of Ethiopia's, most challenging regions. 00:08:58.59\00:09:02.16 Global Mission pioneers are lay members, 00:09:02.19\00:09:04.36 who receive a small stipend 00:09:04.39\00:09:06.27 so they can go plant new groups of believers 00:09:06.30\00:09:08.76 within their own culture and language group. 00:09:08.79\00:09:12.14 Unlike some areas of the world where church planting 00:09:12.17\00:09:14.52 is predominantly done in urban centers, 00:09:14.55\00:09:17.50 Adventist Ethiopian church leaders 00:09:17.53\00:09:19.48 are sending pioneers to both rural and urban areas. 00:09:19.51\00:09:23.74 Ethiopia has a massive population of 77 million people, 00:09:23.77\00:09:28.42 the second largest in Africa. 00:09:28.45\00:09:30.79 So the limited number of pioneers 00:09:30.82\00:09:32.49 the church can send have a tremendous challenge ahead. 00:09:32.52\00:09:36.20 Thank you for your prayers 00:09:36.23\00:09:37.77 and support of the Adventist church's work 00:09:37.80\00:09:39.95 in East-Central Africa. 00:09:39.98\00:09:42.04 This region of the world needs your help. 00:09:42.07\00:09:44.27 So pastors, teachers and lay members 00:09:44.30\00:09:47.18 can tell people in their world about Jesus. 00:09:47.21\00:09:50.29 It's my privilege to introduce our guest Pastor Jan Paulsen. 00:09:56.63\00:10:01.30 Pastor Paulsen, thank you for joining us. 00:10:01.33\00:10:03.74 In your many years as a church leader, 00:10:03.77\00:10:06.48 you got to visit many countries of the world 00:10:06.51\00:10:09.36 and to see church working in those areas. Yeah. 00:10:09.39\00:10:14.07 You got to see encouraging things, discouraging things. 00:10:14.10\00:10:17.46 And I'm wondering whether you could tell us, 00:10:17.49\00:10:20.41 what would you see as our major mission challenges today? 00:10:20.44\00:10:24.69 Well, I think it depends upon in what part of the world you are, 00:10:24.72\00:10:27.69 because the challenges are clearly very different 00:10:27.72\00:10:30.03 in the western world from the kind of challenges 00:10:30.06\00:10:32.67 that we face in other parts of the world. 00:10:32.70\00:10:38.60 And could I say first of all, and I think it's important, 00:10:38.63\00:10:40.74 that we define mission, you know, 00:10:40.77\00:10:43.41 as inclusive and broader manner 00:10:43.44\00:10:45.36 as we possibly can because mission 00:10:45.39\00:10:47.56 is not just the preaching or the speaking of the word. 00:10:47.59\00:10:50.93 Mission is, you know, the famous saying, preach the gospel. 00:10:50.96\00:10:55.84 And if you have to speak although orally, 00:10:55.87\00:11:00.50 you know, which means, 00:11:00.53\00:11:01.93 you know, give the service, serve the people. 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.97 Meet the people where they are. 00:11:05.00\00:11:07.02 For that reason we have in as a church 00:11:07.05\00:11:10.08 we have embarked it and early on 00:11:10.11\00:11:12.15 they're heavily both in education, 00:11:12.18\00:11:14.77 in health ministries, in development aid 00:11:14.80\00:11:18.42 and in the preaching of the gospel. 00:11:18.45\00:11:20.87 You want them to be--we want them to be integrated, 00:11:20.90\00:11:23.40 outreach into the lives of people. 00:11:23.43\00:11:25.79 In every part of the world church, 00:11:25.82\00:11:28.09 that type of combination must be in place. 00:11:28.12\00:11:32.41 In other words we are not only 00:11:32.44\00:11:34.19 preparing people for a kingdom to come. 00:11:34.22\00:11:38.24 We want them, it's Christ's wish 00:11:38.27\00:11:40.71 that they should have 00:11:40.74\00:11:41.77 a fulfilling experience of life here and now. 00:11:41.80\00:11:46.08 And so we are involved in, 00:11:46.11\00:11:48.67 and this is one of the big challenges 00:11:48.70\00:11:50.38 that we face in mission in any part of the world. 00:11:50.41\00:11:53.09 How can we communicate Christ's message 00:11:53.12\00:11:56.09 of hope and salvation for the future 00:11:56.12\00:11:58.39 and prepare people for the kingdom that is to come, 00:11:58.42\00:12:01.52 but do so in a manner which also addresses 00:12:01.55\00:12:04.71 the pains, the needs, the challenges 00:12:04.74\00:12:06.78 and difficulties and the lack of hope, 00:12:06.81\00:12:09.74 which they experience in their daily life here and now. 00:12:09.77\00:12:14.34 Well, Pastor Paulsen, we see for example in places such, 00:12:14.37\00:12:17.81 parts of Africa, South and Central America, 00:12:17.84\00:12:20.90 Philippines we see tremendous growth. Yeah. 00:12:20.93\00:12:23.56 We got territories such as your homeland, 00:12:23.59\00:12:25.82 we go to Scandinavia, we go to Japan and the churches, 00:12:25.85\00:12:29.05 you know, for want of the better word, almost dying. 00:12:29.08\00:12:31.65 I mean, how do we address the challenge of these areas. 00:12:31.68\00:12:36.56 You are right. 00:12:36.59\00:12:37.69 In many, many parts of the western world 00:12:37.72\00:12:39.42 and Japan, and some other segments in Asia also, 00:12:39.45\00:12:44.01 that is virtual standstill, 00:12:44.04\00:12:47.41 as far as we numerically can measure growth. 00:12:47.44\00:12:50.52 However I will not get discouraged on that account 00:12:50.55\00:12:53.86 because God has His own way of numbering Israel. Yes. 00:12:53.89\00:12:58.05 That we may not be able to fully grasp. 00:12:58.08\00:13:01.02 The important thing is that whatever we are 00:13:01.05\00:13:04.40 that we should faithfully assume the mantle 00:13:04.43\00:13:07.45 of being a missionary for God. 00:13:07.48\00:13:09.90 Christ said, I want you to be my witnesses, 00:13:09.93\00:13:12.66 just serve the people, communicate the message to them. 00:13:12.69\00:13:16.82 How do we do this? 00:13:16.85\00:13:18.37 I think when we come to the western world, 00:13:18.40\00:13:21.63 may be the big challenge we face there is not a secular, 00:13:21.66\00:13:26.41 very, very secular world which is in part cynical 00:13:26.44\00:13:34.05 and very, very jaded by traditional values. 00:13:34.08\00:13:39.39 Where they're so called post-modern society 00:13:39.42\00:13:43.05 is not prepared to take any sort of 00:13:43.08\00:13:45.70 absolute standards in anything. 00:13:45.73\00:13:47.72 They just want to have the freedom 00:13:47.75\00:13:49.24 to discover anything they want to discover. 00:13:49.27\00:13:51.27 And if it's good for me, fine. That's what I'm seeking. 00:13:51.30\00:13:54.56 And we shouldn't be telling each other, 00:13:54.59\00:13:57.28 about the values in that sense. 00:13:57.31\00:13:58.90 We should just simply affirm each of this quest 00:13:58.93\00:14:01.76 for their own self satisfaction. 00:14:01.79\00:14:04.07 Of course, that is not the model of Christ. 00:14:04.10\00:14:07.08 Christ, and the message of salvation that it brings. 00:14:07.11\00:14:12.30 It is filled with both standards 00:14:12.33\00:14:15.72 and with promises of help for each of us 00:14:15.75\00:14:18.61 to be able to reach those standards. 00:14:18.64\00:14:21.15 I think that in the western world 00:14:21.18\00:14:23.38 we have to come to people where they are 00:14:23.41\00:14:28.85 and find ways by which we can share with them. 00:14:28.88\00:14:32.62 The things that they can't see, 00:14:32.65\00:14:34.13 this deals with life as I live it now. 00:14:34.16\00:14:37.58 This deals with life here and now. 00:14:37.61\00:14:39.54 And getting close to people is important, not as a preacher, 00:14:39.57\00:14:43.92 but as a person who cares for another person. 00:14:43.95\00:14:46.78 Love is a wonderfully attractive thing 00:14:46.81\00:14:49.94 and if I am able to show to a suffering person 00:14:49.97\00:14:52.86 in my cynical western world a care and compassion, 00:14:52.89\00:14:57.02 may be, may be by chance, 00:14:57.05\00:14:59.33 the Holy Spirit will be able to reach 00:14:59.36\00:15:01.41 into the life of that person. 00:15:01.44\00:15:03.58 I, you know sometimes I ask myself Gary, 00:15:03.61\00:15:06.95 what does God require of me? 00:15:06.98\00:15:10.43 The answer is, I think very, very simple. Just be faithful. 00:15:10.46\00:15:16.19 Just do what I've asked you to do, 00:15:16.22\00:15:17.91 don't be overly distraught about whether 00:15:17.94\00:15:21.00 you can measure the results of what I do. Right. 00:15:21.03\00:15:23.93 You may not be able to hear it now, 00:15:23.96\00:15:25.98 but just be faithful and being a constant witness 00:15:26.01\00:15:29.24 and that is one of the big challenges 00:15:29.27\00:15:31.34 we face in the western world. 00:15:31.37\00:15:34.03 Probably not a good question 00:15:34.06\00:15:35.13 to ask a former administrator 00:15:35.16\00:15:37.63 but have we focused too much on baptisms, baptismal statistics? 00:15:37.66\00:15:43.01 I don't think we have focused too much on that. 00:15:43.04\00:15:46.54 I think it is, we need to get a balance few things. 00:15:46.57\00:15:51.22 Yes, we will count the numbers, 00:15:51.25\00:15:55.23 but we will recognize also that there are 00:15:55.26\00:15:58.08 some parts of the world that we cannot count. 00:15:58.11\00:16:01.39 I think for example of parts of the world 00:16:01.42\00:16:04.65 that are -that their religion, 00:16:04.68\00:16:06.50 historic religion there is so exclusive, 00:16:06.53\00:16:10.07 that it doesn't allow the Christian witness 00:16:10.10\00:16:13.85 much room for integration into society. 00:16:13.88\00:16:18.05 And yet we are doing our very best 00:16:18.08\00:16:19.85 to bring a message that we may not, 00:16:19.88\00:16:22.46 we may not be able to measure the result. Right. 00:16:22.49\00:16:25.74 And we should not be dismayed by that. 00:16:25.77\00:16:27.71 Christ would do His own counting and measuring. 00:16:27.74\00:16:30.29 The Muslim world is a typical case in point 00:16:30.32\00:16:33.42 that is we have many I think that are many crypto-Adventism, 00:16:33.45\00:16:38.62 Adventists in parts of the world 00:16:38.65\00:16:41.13 that we cannot function as openly 00:16:41.16\00:16:43.19 and as we wish we had been able to. 00:16:43.22\00:16:45.22 Dr. Paulsen, I wish we had more time 00:16:45.25\00:16:47.00 but thank you so much for sharing. Thank you. 00:16:47.03\00:16:49.73 And viewers at home, we thank God 00:16:49.76\00:16:51.31 for tremendous growth in many parts of the world. 00:16:51.34\00:16:53.80 Other areas still need the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:16:53.83\00:16:57.42 committed Adventists, and a lot of prayer. 00:16:57.45\00:17:00.30 It's my pleasure to introduce my guest Ricky Alvarez. 00:17:39.24\00:17:43.06 Ricky, thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. 00:17:43.09\00:17:45.48 Ricky, you are a video producer with Adventist Mission. 00:17:45.51\00:17:49.58 And responsible for many of the videos 00:17:49.61\00:17:51.59 that we see on this program, so thank you for your good work. 00:17:51.62\00:17:54.85 I hold in my hand a brand new magazine called 'Mission 360.' 00:17:54.88\00:18:00.71 And this is a magazine Ricky that as you know 00:18:00.74\00:18:03.89 we are making it a digital magazine that will be available 00:18:03.92\00:18:08.65 to watch on your iPad, your Kindle. 00:18:08.68\00:18:13.30 Yeah, lot of different platforms. 00:18:13.33\00:18:14.65 Different platforms. 00:18:14.68\00:18:15.97 And you can go to mission360mag.org to look at it. 00:18:16.00\00:18:19.93 But I'm interested at the moment, at the moment, 00:18:19.96\00:18:22.62 in the picture on the front cover, 00:18:22.65\00:18:24.98 which you took. Right. 00:18:25.01\00:18:26.96 Where did you take this picture of this beautiful kid? 00:18:26.99\00:18:29.59 The picture was taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 00:18:29.62\00:18:33.28 in the capital city of Kinshasa. It's a huge city. 00:18:33.31\00:18:37.03 That is quite a city. Now I remember that. 00:18:37.06\00:18:40.02 I visited there a few years ago and one of the things 00:18:40.05\00:18:43.38 that sticks in my memory is just the masses of people. Yeah. 00:18:43.41\00:18:47.09 And every one of them seemed to be out walking on the streets. 00:18:47.12\00:18:50.65 The second memory I have is of a pastor, 00:18:50.68\00:18:54.55 a former Global Mission pioneer who led the singing 00:18:54.58\00:18:58.32 in some meetings I was attending, Pastor, 00:18:58.35\00:19:01.49 I knew him as pastor Jeremiah 00:19:01.52\00:19:03.22 and he had two of his kids with him 00:19:03.25\00:19:06.58 who would sing with him, it was just beautiful. 00:19:06.61\00:19:09.40 Well, then I was shocked just a few weeks ago, 00:19:09.43\00:19:12.31 to walk past, I think it was your office 00:19:12.34\00:19:14.20 at the General Conference 00:19:14.23\00:19:15.76 and to see some video of exactly the same man who you met. 00:19:15.79\00:19:19.46 Right, exactly. 00:19:19.49\00:19:21.27 And I thought at the time he had this two children 00:19:21.30\00:19:24.02 and I knew he just had a new born baby, 00:19:24.05\00:19:26.32 but in the video that you took, 00:19:26.35\00:19:28.19 he has got like a tribe of 20 kids. 00:19:28.22\00:19:30.61 That's right now that's funny to hear you say is two children, 00:19:30.64\00:19:33.98 because now he has 9 or 10 kids. 00:19:34.01\00:19:37.00 So basically he could have a whole village in his house. 00:19:37.03\00:19:41.37 Yeah and he has a gift of music, 00:19:41.40\00:19:43.47 and when I was there, he would go out on the street, 00:19:43.50\00:19:45.32 he'd start playing his piano accordion 00:19:45.35\00:19:48.15 and people would just gather around to listen. 00:19:48.18\00:19:50.58 And I think nothing has changed, right? 00:19:50.61\00:19:52.12 Yep. It's exact same now. 00:19:52.15\00:19:53.80 Only he has all of his kids, 9 or 10 kids accompanying him 00:19:53.83\00:19:58.50 so they are all on the street, they're really exciting. 00:19:58.53\00:20:02.66 When I first got there, you know I got out of the car, 00:20:02.69\00:20:05.97 not sure what to expect, the pastor there, 00:20:06.00\00:20:08.74 local pastor just told me, you know, 00:20:08.77\00:20:10.66 you have to meet this pastor, 00:20:10.69\00:20:12.38 who was a former Global Mission pioneer. 00:20:12.41\00:20:15.32 And I thought, okay, let's go and visit him. 00:20:15.35\00:20:17.81 So we visited him, got out of the car, 00:20:17.84\00:20:19.80 went into the house and they're in the middle 00:20:19.83\00:20:21.79 of family worship which they do twice a day, 00:20:21.82\00:20:24.90 in the morning and in the evening. 00:20:24.93\00:20:26.61 And so I got there and I couldn't help, 00:20:26.64\00:20:28.89 you know, usually I have, I am always filming everything. 00:20:28.92\00:20:31.54 I want to get everything on video. 00:20:31.57\00:20:33.14 But I couldn't help, you know, put down my camera for a minute 00:20:33.17\00:20:35.38 and picking up my Bible and joining them 00:20:35.41\00:20:38.15 and it was pretty inspiring to see, 00:20:38.18\00:20:39.85 because all of the family is very involved in the ministry. 00:20:39.88\00:20:44.70 And so we went in to the house after their worship, 00:20:44.73\00:20:48.48 they all lined up, one by one marching out of the house 00:20:48.51\00:20:51.61 and they have had built home made trumpets 00:20:51.64\00:20:55.54 and it was pretty cool to see 00:20:55.57\00:20:57.06 because they line up in the street, 00:20:57.09\00:20:59.57 you know, side street of Kinshasa 00:20:59.60\00:21:02.67 and these people will come flooding 00:21:02.70\00:21:05.11 from pretty much nowhere, 00:21:05.14\00:21:06.87 I don't know where they came from the neighbors 00:21:06.90\00:21:09.11 and they just surround and they love hearing all the music. 00:21:09.14\00:21:12.73 Did you meet his wife? 00:21:12.76\00:21:14.83 I met his wife, yeah, and she is, 00:21:14.86\00:21:17.07 she is right up there with him. 00:21:17.10\00:21:18.62 She helps with the singing portion of it. 00:21:18.65\00:21:21.63 I just, you know, I am guessing 00:21:21.66\00:21:25.52 that their home would not be mentioned. No, no. 00:21:25.55\00:21:29.75 I mean the home I walked into was, 00:21:29.78\00:21:32.52 you walked there's a sort of corridor 00:21:32.55\00:21:34.00 and then that's a small living room 00:21:34.03\00:21:36.46 and I mean there might be small extensions 00:21:36.49\00:21:39.96 where they sleep, but it's definitely 00:21:39.99\00:21:42.56 a small humble home for 12 people. 00:21:42.59\00:21:46.08 Well, I can remember when I met him, 00:21:46.11\00:21:48.13 his daughter was sick, I believe she had malaria 00:21:48.16\00:21:51.96 and they had walked something like an hour 00:21:51.99\00:21:54.95 to get to the meetings, because it cost like, 00:21:54.98\00:21:58.05 I think it was like 30 or 50 cents to get a taxi 00:21:58.08\00:22:01.40 and so they couldn't afford it. It's amazing. 00:22:01.43\00:22:03.61 And you see this type of sacrifice with this people. 00:22:03.64\00:22:08.56 I remember him saying, I used to serve the devil, 00:22:08.59\00:22:11.52 now I am serving Jesus. 00:22:11.55\00:22:13.53 And he's got this infectious enthusiasm. 00:22:13.56\00:22:17.63 What is he doing now? 00:22:17.66\00:22:19.36 Well, as I understand, you know, you went there 00:22:19.39\00:22:21.80 and you met him and then from there 00:22:21.83\00:22:23.45 he went back to school for theology 00:22:23.48\00:22:26.79 and so he was able to go, 00:22:26.82\00:22:28.10 it's on the other side of the country, 00:22:28.13\00:22:29.70 there's a small Adventist school, 00:22:29.73\00:22:31.85 you know very remote and he studied theology 00:22:31.88\00:22:34.57 and he came back to be a pastor and so now he is pastoring, 00:22:34.60\00:22:39.26 he is still, you know doing this type of ministry, 00:22:39.29\00:22:42.06 very unique ministry where he is using his talents 00:22:42.09\00:22:45.61 and passing on his talents to his kids. 00:22:45.64\00:22:48.27 And you know he is just a light in the city of Kinshasa, 00:22:48.30\00:22:52.82 it's just awesome to see. 00:22:52.85\00:22:54.45 Now we say that he was a former global mission pioneer 00:22:54.48\00:22:57.83 for some of the viewers 00:22:57.86\00:22:59.63 who may not be familiar with pioneers. 00:22:59.66\00:23:01.23 These are lay people who planted 00:23:01.26\00:23:05.71 new Seventh-day Adventist congregation 00:23:05.74\00:23:07.79 among their own people in a new area. 00:23:07.82\00:23:11.38 They receive a very small living stipend, they live very humbly. 00:23:11.41\00:23:15.26 You get to meet some of these pioneers. Yeah. 00:23:15.29\00:23:17.63 In a sentence or two, 00:23:17.66\00:23:18.69 what sort of impression do they give you? 00:23:18.72\00:23:23.26 Some of the most dedicated people I meet 00:23:23.29\00:23:26.03 when I go into the field are the Global Mission pioneers. 00:23:26.06\00:23:28.99 It's just awesome to see, you know, it's inspiring for me, 00:23:29.02\00:23:32.35 because it makes me want to record it, 00:23:32.38\00:23:34.31 to see how they're, you know, so dedicated 00:23:34.34\00:23:36.94 and so on fire for their mission so, 00:23:36.97\00:23:40.73 I don't know, it's just inspiration. 00:23:40.76\00:23:43.56 Yeah, Ricky, thank you so much for coming 00:23:43.59\00:23:45.66 to share with us today.
