been marred by war and violence.

is made up of 10 countries,

unreached area of the world.

have taken a heavy toll
impacting thousands of lives.

The years of constant struggle

landscape has been overshadowed

by more than a decade of
civil war and tribal genocide.

Small in size Burundi is a
land locked equatorial nation,

in the heart of
East-Central Africa,

bordered by Lake Tanganyika,

the Democratic Republic
of the Congo and Tanzania.

Burundi is a land of
rolling hills and deep lakes.

In the not so distant past,

Burundi was once a
tourist destination.

Burundi gained its independence
from Belgium in 1963,
00:03:34.02\00:03:38.09
however it was until
1993, that Burundi was able

to hold its first democratic
presidential election.

Just 100 days into
the new president's term,
00:03:45.20\00:03:48.84
he was killed along
with Rwanda's president

when their plane was shot down.

This incident has been blamed

for sparking
widespread ethnic violence

between the majority
Hutu and minority Tutsi tribes

in both Burundi and Rwanda.

Today many in Burundi
struggle with poverty.

Only 50% of
children go to school

and HIV AIDS is set to infect
approximately 1 in 15 adults.

Despite the many challenges
that exist in Burundi,

the Adventist church is strong.

One person out of every 81
in the country is an Adventist.

However in Burundi, like in
many other parts of the world,

Adventism has
struggled to grow in the cities,

especially in the
capital Bujumbura.

To meet the great
needs of this city

and others around the
world, the Adventist church

took up a special
offering five years ago,

called 'Hope for big cities.'

Local church elder,

helped us to grow this church,

Our evangelistic
activities are still going on.

in the Kinyosha church,

but now we have
almost doubled that figure.

We continue doing evangelism
not just in our neighborhood,

but in the rest
of Bujumbura as well.

Adventist plan to
build a new hospital

For years the cramped clinic

has been the church's
main outreach in the city.

Church leaders hope

will help touch lives
and extend the church's

physical healing

Neighboring Rwanda shares
much of Burundi's violent past.

In the early 1960s,
ethnic violence sparked

between the
Hutus and the Tutsis,

displaced some
150,000 Rwandanese

and then in the early
1990s, tribal violence exploded,
00:06:14.24\00:06:18.47
leading to the
genocide of one million people
00:06:18.50\00:06:21.86
and sending some
two million refugees

fleeing for their lives.

Despite all the unrest,

the Adventist
church continues to grow.

Today it has one of
the highest ratios of

any country in the world.

Rwandan government

Here on this campus,

Many of whom are not Adventists.

The queen brought back with
her Jewish priest and Levites,

who left a spiritual

The first Adventist
missionaries arrived in Ethiopia

nearly 90 years ago,
they established schools,

clinics, a press and a hospital
in the capital city Addis Ababa.

Despite the country's long
history of Judeo-Christianity,

the church in Ethiopia
unlike Burundi and Rwanda,

has struggled to grow.

this makes Ethiopia one
of the challenging areas

The Adventist church

to send global mission pioneers

so they can go plant

Unlike some areas of the

population of 77 million people,

the second largest in Africa.

So the limited
number of pioneers

the church can send have a
tremendous challenge ahead.

whether you could tell us,

what would you see as our
major mission challenges today?

Well, I think it depends upon in
what part of the world you are,

because the challenges
are clearly very different
00:10:27.72\00:10:30.03
in the western world
from the kind of challenges
00:10:30.06\00:10:32.67
that we face in
other parts of the world.
00:10:32.70\00:10:38.60
And could I say first of
all, and I think it's important,

that we define
mission, you know,
00:10:40.77\00:10:43.41
as inclusive and broader manner
00:10:43.44\00:10:45.36
as we possibly
can because mission

is not just the preaching
or the speaking of the word.

Mission is, you know, the famous
saying, preach the gospel.

And if you have to
speak although orally,

you know, which means,

you know, give the
service, serve the people.

Meet the people where they are.

For that reason we
have in as a church

we have embarked it and early on

they're heavily
both in education,

in health
ministries, in development aid

and in the
preaching of the gospel.

You want them to be--we
want them to be integrated,

outreach into
the lives of people.

In every part of
the world church,

that type of
combination must be in place.

In other words we are not only

of the big challenges

How can we
communicate Christ's message

of hope and
salvation for the future

and prepare people for
the kingdom that is to come,

but do so in a
manner which also addresses

the pains, the
needs, the challenges

and difficulties
and the lack of hope,

which they experience in
their daily life here and now.

Well, Pastor Paulsen, we
see for example in places such,

parts of Africa,
South and Central America,

Philippines we see
tremendous growth. Yeah.

We got territories
such as your homeland,

we go to Scandinavia, we
go to Japan and the churches,

you know, for want of the
better word, almost dying.

I mean, how do we address
the challenge of these areas.

You are right.

In many, many parts
of the western world

and Japan, and some
other segments in Asia also,

that is virtual standstill,

numerically can measure growth.

However I will not get
discouraged on that account

because God has His own
way of numbering Israel. Yes.

That we may not be
able to fully grasp.

The important thing
is that whatever we are

faithfully assume the mantle

How do we do this?

I think when we come
to the western world,

may be the big challenge we
face there is not a secular,

very, very secular
world which is in part cynical

and very, very jaded
by traditional values.

Where they're so
called post-modern society

is not prepared
to take any sort of

absolute standards in anything.

They just want
to have the freedom

to discover anything
they want to discover.

And if it's good for me,
fine. That's what I'm seeking.

And we shouldn't
be telling each other,

about the values in that sense.

We should just simply
affirm each of this quest

for their own self satisfaction.

Of course, that is
not the model of Christ.

Christ, and the message
of salvation that it brings.

It is filled with both standards

the western world

Yes, we will count the numbers,

recognize also that there are

I think for example

that are -that their religion,

historic religion
there is so exclusive,

that it doesn't
allow the Christian witness

integration into society.

And yet we are
doing our very best

to bring a
message that we may not,

we may not be able to
measure the result. Right.

The Muslim world is

I visited there a few
years ago and one of the things

just the masses of people. Yeah.

And every one of them seemed to
be out walking on the streets.

The second memory I
have is of a pastor,

a former Global Mission
pioneer who led the singing

in some meetings I
was attending, Pastor,

I knew him as pastor Jeremiah

and he had two
of his kids with him

who would sing with
him, it was just beautiful.

Well, then I was
shocked just a few weeks ago,

to walk past, I
think it was your office

at the General Conference

and to see some video of exactly
the same man who you met.

And I thought at the
time he had this two children

and I knew he just
had a new born baby,

but in the video that you took,

a tribe of 20 kids.

That's right now that's funny

a whole village in his house.

expect, the pastor there,

And I thought, okay,

So we visited him,

and they're in the middle

of family worship
which they do twice a day,

in the morning
and in the evening.

And so I got there
and I couldn't help,

you know, usually I have, I
am always filming everything.

put down my camera for a minute

Bible and joining them

very involved in the ministry.

will come flooding

home for 12 people.

Well, I can
remember when I met him,

his daughter was sick,
I believe she had malaria

and they had walked
something like an hour

to get to the
meetings, because it cost like,

I think it was like 30
or 50 cents to get a taxi

and so they couldn't
afford it. It's amazing.

And you see this type of
sacrifice with this people.

I remember him saying,
I used to serve the devil,

now I am serving Jesus.

And he's got this
infectious enthusiasm.

What is he doing now?

Well, as I understand,
you know, you went there

and you met him
and then from there

he went back to
school for theology

and so he was able to go,

it's on the other
side of the country,

and he studied theology
