On today's program former Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:01.23\00:00:04.18 world church president Jan Paulsen's 00:00:04.21\00:00:06.32 conversation with young people 00:00:06.35\00:00:08.35 and how Adventists are touching lives through health programs 00:00:08.38\00:00:12.44 in challenging places in the 10/40 Window. 00:00:12.47\00:00:15.58 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:26.50\00:00:29.01 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:29.04\00:00:31.96 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, go. 00:00:31.99\00:00:37.23 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:37.26\00:00:42.11 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:42.14\00:00:46.28 Hello I am Gary Krause 00:00:51.07\00:00:52.21 and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:52.24\00:00:54.93 Today we'll be talking with former world church president 00:00:54.96\00:00:57.51 of the Seventh-day Adventist church, Dr. Jan Paulsen. 00:00:57.54\00:01:00.63 While he was president, Dr. Paulsen fielded questions 00:01:00.66\00:01:03.65 from the young Adventists at various meetings 00:01:03.68\00:01:06.37 held in various parts of the world. 00:01:06.40\00:01:08.73 Today Dr. Paulsen will be talking about that experience 00:01:08.76\00:01:11.95 and what he has learnt about mission 00:01:11.98\00:01:14.30 from listening to young people. 00:01:14.33\00:01:16.56 We'll also be talking with an Adventist couple 00:01:16.59\00:01:19.18 who are helping touch lives 00:01:19.21\00:01:20.63 in some of the most challenging 10/40 Window areas. 00:01:20.66\00:01:24.25 They'll be sharing stories about how Adventists 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.69 are ministering to people through holistic ministry. 00:01:26.72\00:01:30.55 We'll also watch a classic Adventist mission video 00:01:30.58\00:01:33.26 called, 'A Cowboy's tale' from South America. 00:01:33.29\00:01:36.89 But first up, let's see how doctors and nurses 00:01:36.92\00:01:39.94 at a hospital in Nigeria 00:01:39.97\00:01:42.10 are touching the lives of children in need. 00:01:42.13\00:01:45.09 And when they are born they don't want their parents to know 00:02:17.42\00:02:20.71 they throw them away. 00:02:20.74\00:02:23.52 Or they bring them to a place where somebody can feed them up. 00:02:23.55\00:02:27.89 When I think of you, I start to smile. 00:02:27.92\00:02:32.47 You are God and you make me so happy. 00:02:32.50\00:02:37.50 People look at me and wonder why I'm smiling all the time 00:02:37.53\00:02:43.40 And I think well, why shouldn't I. 00:02:43.43\00:02:47.38 You make me so happy, 00:02:47.41\00:02:55.97 Jesus, You make me so happy. 00:02:56.00\00:03:03.97 We have a team of nurses who are highly qualified and dedicated, 00:03:11.02\00:03:19.63 taking care of those children and many of them are mothers, 00:03:19.66\00:03:23.71 so they know what they are doing. 00:03:23.74\00:03:25.61 You make me so happy, 00:03:25.64\00:03:34.37 Jesus, You make me so happy. 00:03:34.40\00:03:44.08 Our motto is serving humanity for Christ. 00:03:44.11\00:03:49.40 And that's exactly what we want to do. 00:03:49.43\00:03:51.40 It's my pleasure to introduce our guest Dr. Jan Paulsen. 00:03:52.42\00:03:56.57 Dr. Paulsen, former General Conference president 00:03:56.60\00:03:59.48 heading up the Seventh-day Adventist church, 00:03:59.51\00:04:02.06 has worked in many different capacities for the church, 00:04:02.09\00:04:04.48 as a pastor, as a teacher, as a missionary, 00:04:04.51\00:04:07.84 as a mentor to young people, 00:04:07.87\00:04:09.37 as an administrator, the list goes on. 00:04:09.40\00:04:11.90 You've written many books, Dr. Paulsen. 00:04:11.93\00:04:13.48 I am glad you've come today to share with us. 00:04:13.51\00:04:16.36 This is the most recent book, 00:04:16.39\00:04:17.90 'Let's Talk' hot off the presses. 00:04:17.93\00:04:20.00 Why did you as the General Conference president, 00:04:20.03\00:04:23.74 take time to talk to young people? 00:04:23.77\00:04:26.68 Well, it seems so natural, it seemed normal. 00:04:26.71\00:04:28.98 I mean, they make up the under 32, 00:04:29.01\00:04:32.18 in our church they make up 50%, 00:04:32.21\00:04:34.17 at least 50% of our global family. 00:04:34.20\00:04:37.29 And then many of them feel, oh, somewhat this in franchise. 00:04:37.32\00:04:40.87 They feel that they have no meaningful role 00:04:40.90\00:04:44.97 or place in the church and are overlooked. 00:04:45.00\00:04:50.06 And I felt as president, let me see if I can, 00:04:50.09\00:04:53.95 somehow by conversation with them 00:04:53.98\00:04:56.41 draw them a little bit closer 00:04:56.44\00:04:58.24 into the life of the church, 00:04:58.27\00:05:00.53 may be I also, as an administrator, 00:05:00.56\00:05:04.31 as a church leader have something 00:05:04.34\00:05:07.00 to learn that they can tell me. 00:05:07.03\00:05:08.38 So and to achieve some of that, 00:05:08.41\00:05:11.81 during a seven year period while I was president, 00:05:11.84\00:05:15.83 we held 30 of these live television unscripted, 00:05:15.86\00:05:21.01 many of them shown both on Hope Channel and 3ABN. 00:05:21.04\00:05:25.84 Live conversations in every part of the world, 00:05:25.87\00:05:29.39 from all cultures and yeah, it was a wonderful experience. 00:05:29.42\00:05:33.75 I learned a lot from them 00:05:33.78\00:05:35.99 and it gave them a voice to speak to not just me, 00:05:36.02\00:05:39.15 but to speak to the church. 00:05:39.18\00:05:40.30 There are many who do by watching. 00:05:40.33\00:05:42.76 I remember watching some of these, Dr. Paulsen, 00:05:42.79\00:05:45.15 and my dominant thought was, I am glad it's him and not me 00:05:45.18\00:05:49.13 because you didn't know the questions, 00:05:49.16\00:05:51.19 they could ask anything they wanted, 00:05:51.22\00:05:52.77 it's going on live television. 00:05:52.80\00:05:55.64 Were there any tricky moments? Not really. 00:05:55.67\00:05:59.73 I mean, I said to them typically before we went on the air, 00:05:59.76\00:06:03.79 I said, look, if you want to make 00:06:03.82\00:06:05.77 a fool of yourself, this is your chance. 00:06:05.80\00:06:08.85 Because it was unscripted 00:06:08.88\00:06:11.01 but it became very, very quickly clear to me 00:06:11.04\00:06:13.93 that they felt very protective of the church, 00:06:13.96\00:06:17.47 they felt a strong loyalty to the church. 00:06:17.50\00:06:19.46 They wanted the church, not just them, 00:06:19.49\00:06:21.33 but they wanted the church to look good. 00:06:21.36\00:06:24.19 So they were very, very responsible 00:06:24.22\00:06:26.93 and also I felt in the kind of questions 00:06:26.96\00:06:29.29 that they would like to engage me in. 00:06:29.32\00:06:31.38 Yes, they were some trivial questions also. 00:06:31.41\00:06:34.65 But on the whole, there were questions 00:06:34.68\00:06:37.23 of importance to the church, 00:06:37.26\00:06:39.38 to the life and witness of the church. 00:06:39.41\00:06:42.06 And they were questions which they-- 00:06:42.09\00:06:44.14 who cared profoundly for the church, 00:06:44.17\00:06:46.90 wanted the church leaders to think about it. 00:06:46.93\00:06:49.90 Also interestingly I discovered, 00:06:49.93\00:06:53.22 I mean sometimes I gave them answer, 00:06:53.25\00:06:56.40 I had the answers to most of them I think I probably did. 00:06:56.43\00:06:59.43 But there were times when I did not know, 00:06:59.46\00:07:01.88 and that was not a problem. 00:07:01.91\00:07:04.59 To them the most important thing was, 00:07:04.62\00:07:07.47 they could engage me as a church leader in conversation, 00:07:07.50\00:07:11.70 they were being listened to, and they were being given 00:07:11.73\00:07:14.03 an opportunity to talk to you, to talk to the church. 00:07:14.06\00:07:18.76 And that was the wonderful thing about it. 00:07:18.79\00:07:20.73 Yeah, fantastic. 00:07:20.76\00:07:21.79 Now, Dr. Paulsen, this book, 00:07:21.82\00:07:22.91 'Let's Talk' published by Pacific Press. 00:07:22.94\00:07:26.12 Tell me about the format, 00:07:26.15\00:07:27.32 the way it's structured and its purpose? 00:07:27.35\00:07:29.00 This book was just came out last week 00:07:29.03\00:07:31.13 and we introduced it 00:07:31.16\00:07:32.76 to the General Conference Executive Committee 00:07:32.79\00:07:34.73 which met for their spring meetings 00:07:34.76\00:07:36.50 in Battle Creek, just last week. 00:07:36.53\00:07:38.33 And we gave a copy of it to each member of the committee. 00:07:38.36\00:07:42.13 What we thought in producing this book 00:07:42.16\00:07:44.76 was that we would select, it doesn't solve the main issues 00:07:44.79\00:07:51.37 that came up in these 30 conversations 00:07:51.40\00:07:53.94 because they were a number of core issues 00:07:53.97\00:07:56.42 that kept coming up whether it was in Asia, 00:07:56.45\00:07:58.91 in Africa, in South America, in Europe or in North America. 00:07:58.94\00:08:02.52 Where ever we were, they were core questions 00:08:02.55\00:08:04.96 that kept coming up, questions about 00:08:04.99\00:08:07.56 the function and role of young people in the church, 00:08:07.59\00:08:10.11 question about diversity, race 00:08:10.14\00:08:12.63 and the challenges of cultures which sometimes conflict, 00:08:12.66\00:08:16.06 questions about marriage and co-habitation, 00:08:16.09\00:08:18.64 about homosexuality, about military service, 00:08:18.67\00:08:24.38 about should an Adventist run for election, 00:08:24.41\00:08:27.50 for government office, or for congress or whatever. 00:08:27.53\00:08:29.99 So there were big issues that constantly kept coming 00:08:30.02\00:08:33.21 and they wanted to talk with me about standards. 00:08:33.24\00:08:36.25 Standards of dress, of music, of eating and drinking. 00:08:36.28\00:08:40.50 So these are big issues 00:08:40.53\00:08:42.81 and so we selected a dozen of these 00:08:42.84\00:08:46.34 and made them into chapters in a book. 00:08:46.37\00:08:50.08 At the opening of each chapter, 00:08:50.11\00:08:51.48 however you will find a two-and-half or three pages 00:08:51.51\00:08:54.71 of exact quotations from the young people themselves. 00:08:54.74\00:08:58.72 These were the questions, this is what bothered them, 00:08:58.75\00:09:01.66 we didn't try to polish any of those, so let it be-- 00:09:01.69\00:09:04.45 and some of it may not be comfortable reading 00:09:04.48\00:09:07.59 but it's what they said to the church. 00:09:07.62\00:09:10.84 This is what troubled them. 00:09:10.87\00:09:11.90 This is what they wanted answers to. 00:09:11.93\00:09:13.93 And then I spent the next 7, 8 or 9 pages reflecting 00:09:13.96\00:09:19.86 on what we might possibly say in response to them. 00:09:19.89\00:09:23.87 But we wanted the book to be more than just a book 00:09:23.90\00:09:27.54 which you read and then put on the shelf somewhere. 00:09:27.57\00:09:30.15 We wanted a book to have a active life in the church 00:09:30.18\00:09:33.40 so at the end of each chapter, 00:09:33.43\00:09:36.26 there are, there is a page of conversation starters 00:09:36.29\00:09:40.79 or conversation teasers, that's the way 00:09:40.82\00:09:43.49 by which we are trying to stimulate 00:09:43.52\00:09:45.23 a cross generational conversation into church. 00:09:45.26\00:09:48.23 And frankly you know, 00:09:48.26\00:09:49.71 we need to learn to talk more to each other. 00:09:49.74\00:09:53.01 What happens if you don't talk? 00:09:53.04\00:09:54.85 When people stop talking, they walk away from each other? 00:09:54.88\00:09:58.88 We cannot allow that to happen in our church. 00:09:58.91\00:10:01.44 I want those who are young 00:10:01.47\00:10:03.42 and those of us who are not so young anymore 00:10:03.45\00:10:06.31 to function like a family where we understand each other, 00:10:06.34\00:10:09.96 we care for each other, we embrace each other, 00:10:09.99\00:10:13.10 also our intellect is capable of embracing each other, 00:10:13.13\00:10:17.41 so that we can give some sort of affirmation, 00:10:17.44\00:10:20.48 some sort of authenticity 00:10:20.51\00:10:22.72 to what we stand for and what we share. 00:10:22.75\00:10:24.91 We have to do this together, we need for all, young or old 00:10:24.94\00:10:29.41 to be involved in the life of the church. 00:10:29.44\00:10:31.59 Fantastic, Dr. Paulsen. 00:10:31.62\00:10:33.61 I am sure that-- thank you so much 00:10:33.64\00:10:35.59 for joining us today to talk about this book. 00:10:35.62\00:10:38.12 Viewers at home 'Let's talk,' 00:10:38.15\00:10:40.24 conversations with young Adventists about their church, 00:10:40.27\00:10:43.45 available at Adventist book centers, 00:10:43.48\00:10:45.52 available online and I guess even at amazon.com in time 00:10:45.55\00:10:49.47 so, I just want to briefly read from the back here 00:10:49.50\00:10:52.08 what Dr. Paulsen says, "As I look back, 00:10:52.11\00:10:54.75 I am struck by the richness, beauty and balance 00:10:54.78\00:10:57.22 of what young Adventists men and women have taught me." 00:10:57.25\00:11:00.67 and he talks about, "I continually met 00:11:00.70\00:11:03.75 my master teacher who never tired of teaching 00:11:03.78\00:11:06.19 and re-teaching me the immense value 00:11:06.22\00:11:08.33 of every person for who He died." 00:11:08.36\00:11:11.00 Please pray for the young people in our church, 00:11:11.03\00:11:13.71 the young adults, the young professionals 00:11:13.74\00:11:15.96 who are so vital not just for the future of the church 00:11:15.99\00:11:19.77 but for the present of this church. 00:11:19.80\00:11:21.81 They need to be involved in the mission of this church, 00:11:21.84\00:11:23.88 and they can bring so much, so much strength 00:11:23.91\00:11:27.13 to reaching out to our communities. 00:11:27.16\00:11:29.66 I am very happy to welcome Marshall and Rosemary McKenzie 00:12:17.18\00:12:20.73 who have joined us from the Middle East. 00:12:20.76\00:12:23.00 Thanks for coming. Thank you. 00:12:23.03\00:12:24.74 Now I presume you are doing some other things 00:12:24.77\00:12:26.85 in United States other than visiting me, 00:12:26.88\00:12:28.64 but it's great to have you in our program. 00:12:28.67\00:12:30.74 Now when did you move to the Middle East? 00:12:30.77\00:12:33.04 We moved to the Middle East just, 00:12:33.07\00:12:35.99 it was February, actually of 2011. Okay. 00:12:36.02\00:12:39.58 When we arrived, late in February. 00:12:39.61\00:12:41.59 So you've been there for more than a year. Yeah. 00:12:41.62\00:12:43.77 Now you got kids, 3, 6 and 9. 00:12:43.80\00:12:45.85 That was a pretty big step, right? It was. 00:12:45.88\00:12:50.01 How they are adapting? They are doing very good. 00:12:50.04\00:12:52.80 They had opportunity to make friends 00:12:52.83\00:12:55.37 with kids that are of their age, 00:12:55.40\00:12:56.93 there are some nice group of kids, 00:12:56.96\00:12:58.16 that are very close to their age, 00:12:58.19\00:13:00.40 and it's good, they're enjoying it, 00:13:00.43\00:13:03.37 they are enjoying being able to see. 00:13:03.40\00:13:05.04 Our son said, "Mom, I want to go and see 00:13:05.07\00:13:08.34 all those archeological places. 00:13:08.37\00:13:10.54 So it's good for-- it's good for them. 00:13:10.57\00:13:12.48 That was an experience I will never forget. 00:13:12.51\00:13:15.09 Now, Rosemary, you had a dream since a kid 00:13:15.12\00:13:19.10 to go overseas to do this sort of thing that you're doing. 00:13:19.13\00:13:22.17 Tell me about that? 00:13:22.20\00:13:24.12 Ever since I've been a little girl, 00:13:24.15\00:13:26.15 I always wished that our family could go as missionaries, 00:13:26.18\00:13:29.37 so growing up that never happened, 00:13:29.40\00:13:31.24 but now we've had opportunity to serve in the Middle East 00:13:31.27\00:13:36.26 and so when we were asked to go, 00:13:36.29\00:13:38.62 sure that would be great. Wonderful. 00:13:38.65\00:13:40.80 Now, you are working specifically 00:13:40.83\00:13:43.02 in the area of distributing literature 00:13:43.05\00:13:46.31 to help people in various aspects of their lives. 00:13:46.34\00:13:48.80 You're also involved in helping young people. 00:13:48.83\00:13:52.11 Tell me a story of something that's happening over there. 00:13:52.14\00:13:56.38 You know it's exciting to see 00:13:56.41\00:13:59.14 the young people of the Middle East leading out 00:13:59.17\00:14:04.16 and there is one young man that I really appreciated, 00:14:04.19\00:14:09.25 his friendship, we're growing as friends, 00:14:09.28\00:14:11.05 he is growing, we're friends 00:14:11.08\00:14:12.21 and their families interacts with our children very well. 00:14:12.24\00:14:15.55 And to hear his story 00:14:15.58\00:14:17.82 the fact that he wanted to know God better, 00:14:17.85\00:14:22.04 and through a series of events, 00:14:22.07\00:14:24.43 especially in accident that almost took his life. 00:14:24.46\00:14:27.66 He realized that waking up from a coma that he was in, 00:14:27.69\00:14:32.56 realizing God has a purpose for my life, 00:14:32.59\00:14:35.13 and so he began to follow that purpose. 00:14:35.16\00:14:39.76 Matter of fact he had a dream, 00:14:39.79\00:14:42.02 and in that dream, he saw his friend 00:14:42.05\00:14:45.78 but there was no one else in his village. 00:14:45.81\00:14:48.38 And but they were all congregating, 00:14:48.41\00:14:51.26 his friend said, they're over there, 00:14:51.29\00:14:52.90 they're congregating, they are worshipping together 00:14:52.93\00:14:55.00 and this young man went over to this a group 00:14:55.03\00:14:58.47 and realized all these people were worshipping 00:14:58.50\00:15:02.96 and that his responsibility was to nurture 00:15:02.99\00:15:05.39 these types of families and help people 00:15:05.42\00:15:07.54 to continue to grow closer to God 00:15:07.57\00:15:10.09 and he comes from a war torn area 00:15:10.12\00:15:12.44 and it's exciting to see at the age of 23, 00:15:12.47\00:15:16.06 that here's this young man that gave his life to God 00:15:16.09\00:15:18.88 and now wants to serve God with his whole heart 00:15:18.91\00:15:21.31 and he just wants other people 00:15:21.34\00:15:22.48 to enjoy their relationship with God also 00:15:22.51\00:15:25.68 and have the same joy and service as he's having. 00:15:25.71\00:15:28.95 I mean it's a real encouragement to see those kinds of stories 00:15:28.98\00:15:34.49 come out of the Middle East where sometimes 00:15:34.52\00:15:36.67 people don't think those positive things are happening. 00:15:36.70\00:15:39.32 Now how do you find that people received you as an American 00:15:39.35\00:15:46.06 in a territory that is very sensitive 00:15:46.09\00:15:49.13 at the moment in many political ways. 00:15:49.16\00:15:51.92 How do people respond to you? 00:15:51.95\00:15:54.90 They'd respond very positively, 00:15:54.93\00:15:56.94 because they really appreciate us, 00:15:56.97\00:15:59.44 we appreciate them, we appreciate working with them. 00:15:59.47\00:16:02.76 I found that people have been very friendly to me, 00:16:02.79\00:16:06.29 now of course, in a male society like that, 00:16:06.32\00:16:10.61 it's a little easier, but overall it's been wonderful. 00:16:10.64\00:16:14.77 We've had people get our friends that have come to visit us 00:16:14.80\00:16:17.55 and they've gotten of the airplane 00:16:17.58\00:16:18.95 and people said welcome you know, to our country. 00:16:18.98\00:16:21.87 And they've just been very friendly and very open 00:16:21.90\00:16:25.01 and we've really appreciated that. 00:16:25.04\00:16:26.55 We felt very welcome in the Middle East. 00:16:26.58\00:16:29.15 Rosemary, how about you? 00:16:29.18\00:16:31.52 I would say the same, people are more curious than 00:16:31.55\00:16:36.24 you know sometimes we think that every body hates us or something 00:16:36.27\00:16:40.80 because we are from the United States 00:16:40.83\00:16:42.38 and there's probably people that feel that way, 00:16:42.41\00:16:46.17 but more people are just like, you know, 00:16:46.20\00:16:48.09 they are always asking, where are you from, 00:16:48.12\00:16:49.76 then they would say, and they are like, 00:16:49.79\00:16:51.66 oh, you're- just wanting to understand 00:16:51.69\00:16:54.31 because they don't see a lot of people 00:16:54.34\00:16:55.63 from outside of their culture, 00:16:55.66\00:16:57.26 so they, you know, have whatever idea in their own mind 00:16:57.29\00:17:01.04 and so we also break stereotypes for them. 00:17:01.07\00:17:04.04 Yeah, excellent. 00:17:04.07\00:17:06.72 We were talking before about, 00:17:06.75\00:17:08.83 I think you call them for your life center, 00:17:08.86\00:17:11.44 for your life center, tell me about this? 00:17:11.47\00:17:13.94 The idea is, our goal is just to help the people in the community 00:17:13.97\00:17:19.95 be more aware of their health, 00:17:19.98\00:17:22.16 and so that they can live longer 00:17:22.19\00:17:24.63 and be happier as they are living 00:17:24.66\00:17:27.31 and so this center is for the community, 00:17:27.34\00:17:31.29 it's to help the community, it's to meet community needs. 00:17:31.32\00:17:35.25 And so we actually had some young people join us 00:17:35.28\00:17:39.16 for a couple of weeks and it was exciting to see 00:17:39.19\00:17:42.74 how they were-- we were just doing health screening 00:17:42.77\00:17:45.11 and we didn't expect, the expectation was low 00:17:45.14\00:17:49.28 and in a week we served about 600 people. 00:17:49.31\00:17:53.17 And it was exciting to see them coming 00:17:53.20\00:17:55.10 from all over the city really to come into this 00:17:55.13\00:17:58.82 because they've heard about this for your life center 00:17:58.85\00:18:02.45 and they could get health screening and it was exciting, 00:18:02.48\00:18:05.08 we are meeting people with diabetes, 00:18:05.11\00:18:06.77 that didn't know that they had diabetes 00:18:06.80\00:18:09.32 and we were developing relationships 00:18:09.35\00:18:11.56 and it was exciting to see 00:18:11.59\00:18:12.93 the development of those relationships. 00:18:12.96\00:18:16.09 And we've had young people 00:18:16.12\00:18:17.23 from the Middle East University join us in that 00:18:17.26\00:18:21.72 and with translation and things and to see those two components, 00:18:21.75\00:18:26.70 the young people from outside the Middle East 00:18:26.73\00:18:28.99 and young people from inside the Middle East come together 00:18:29.02\00:18:31.46 and work together to benefit the community 00:18:31.49\00:18:34.20 was just a blessing from God. 00:18:34.23\00:18:38.45 And you told me about a doctor who came and offered to help? 00:18:38.48\00:18:41.37 Yeah, we had this doctor, 00:18:41.40\00:18:43.53 who actually went through the health screening 00:18:43.56\00:18:44.98 they wanted to see what it was about 00:18:45.01\00:18:46.87 they came in, you know, they got their blood pressure, 00:18:46.90\00:18:49.94 they got their finger pricked, you know, for blood glucose 00:18:49.97\00:18:52.81 and then afterwards they said, 00:18:52.84\00:18:54.47 "You know, what you're doing here is a real benefit 00:18:54.50\00:18:57.48 and I work for refugees and we would love for you, 00:18:57.51\00:19:03.05 if you have a chance, if you want to come, 00:19:03.08\00:19:04.90 you let us know, we will give you 500 people in a day. Wow. 00:19:04.93\00:19:08.07 So it was--we saw the doors opening and God just blessing 00:19:08.10\00:19:11.83 because we were meeting a real need in the community 00:19:11.86\00:19:16.26 that existed and people responded to it. 00:19:16.29\00:19:19.43 Rosemary, were you involved in this as well? 00:19:19.46\00:19:22.51 I was involved in a little bit, 00:19:22.54\00:19:24.53 mostly in just helping provide logistical support 00:19:24.56\00:19:28.27 but another contact that was made there was, 00:19:28.30\00:19:32.34 one of the ladies, another missionary wife 00:19:32.37\00:19:35.98 had been praying for an opportunity 00:19:36.01\00:19:37.87 to connect with refugees in our country. 00:19:37.90\00:19:40.26 There's a lot of displaced people 00:19:40.29\00:19:41.64 that are coming into our country right now. 00:19:41.67\00:19:43.44 And she had made phone calls and connect, 00:19:43.47\00:19:45.31 you know, tried to connect with people 00:19:45.34\00:19:47.27 and had made no success at all. 00:19:47.30\00:19:50.69 And so finally she used to say, 00:19:50.72\00:19:53.51 you know, Lord, I don't know to find the opportunity 00:19:53.54\00:19:56.83 to connect with these people but there is a huge need. 00:19:56.86\00:19:59.34 And so because of this health screening 00:19:59.37\00:20:02.82 that was offered, a lot of these people were coming through 00:20:02.85\00:20:05.59 and so she was able to connect with them in a personal way. 00:20:05.62\00:20:08.70 Fantastic. Wonderful. 00:20:08.73\00:20:11.08 Well thank you so much for joining us today. 00:20:11.11\00:20:13.19 I appreciate you and the stories. 00:20:13.22\00:20:15.47 And viewers at home, the Middle East is a place 00:20:15.50\00:20:20.66 with so many people, so many needs, 00:20:20.69\00:20:22.95 and please pray for people such as Marshall and Rosemary 00:20:22.98\00:20:26.65 as they are there serving the people 00:20:26.68\00:20:28.91 and making a difference. 00:20:28.94\00:20:30.77 Manuel Ledesma walks his farm in northwest Argentina. 00:20:36.05\00:20:41.84 At 87 years of age he still works his farm every day. 00:20:41.87\00:20:45.91 He's proud of the fact that he still rides his horse, 00:20:51.86\00:20:54.64 something he had done for the past 80 years. 00:20:54.67\00:21:00.21 As the corn leaves Manuel's hand and falls to the ground 00:21:00.24\00:21:03.84 his sheep quickly fight the chickens for every kernel. 00:21:03.87\00:21:07.22 Manuel not only feeds his literal sheep 00:21:07.25\00:21:10.39 but God's sheep as well. 00:21:10.42\00:21:13.20 Manuel and his wife Elyssia became Adventists 20 years ago, 00:21:13.23\00:21:17.42 and ever since have shared God's love 00:21:17.45\00:21:19.55 with their family and friends. 00:21:19.58\00:21:21.79 Once a week Manuel and his grandson Lucas 00:21:40.22\00:21:43.42 take the short walk to the church 00:21:43.45\00:21:45.58 at the end of their property to prepare for Sabbath. 00:21:45.61\00:21:48.37 This building is home to 20 church members 00:21:48.40\00:21:51.63 and his key to opening the doors of Ojito to the gospel, 00:21:51.66\00:21:55.39 even though his own house doesn't have electricity, 00:21:55.42\00:21:58.71 Manuel has made sure that the little church does. 00:21:58.74\00:22:02.53 The mission offering this quarter 00:22:02.56\00:22:03.90 will help to update the church 00:22:03.93\00:22:05.56 and provide a source of light to a community 00:22:05.59\00:22:08.31 that has been kept in the dark. 00:22:08.34\00:22:10.09 As Manuel sweeps the floor, Lucas practices 00:22:12.27\00:22:15.71 singing his favorite Sabbath song. 00:22:15.74\00:22:18.25 (Foreign language) 00:22:18.28\00:22:26.25 As they start to walk back home, 00:22:31.45\00:22:33.87 Manuel tells his grandson how important it is 00:22:33.90\00:22:36.38 to give back to God and thanks 00:22:36.41\00:22:38.25 for all the blessings they receive from Him. 00:22:38.28\00:22:42.45 Every three months Adventist mission 00:23:09.45\00:23:11.48 produces an inspiring collection of video mission stories 00:23:11.51\00:23:14.72 and reports for the Adventist mission DVD. 00:23:14.75\00:23:18.09 If you haven't seen these videos 00:23:18.12\00:23:19.44 or if your church isn't using them
