Small mission offering projects, making a big difference 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.06 and helping missionaries bridge the cultural divide, 00:00:04.09\00:00:07.50 that and much more coming up 00:00:07.53\00:00:09.19 next on "Global Mission snapshots." 00:00:09.22\00:00:12.03 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:22.65\00:00:25.25 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:25.28\00:00:28.15 He gave us a mission. 00:00:28.18\00:00:30.92 Jesus said, go. 00:00:30.95\00:00:33.37 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:33.40\00:00:38.34 This is our mission. 00:00:38.37\00:00:40.34 This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:40.37\00:00:42.41 Hello and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:47.32\00:00:50.00 I am Gary Krause. 00:00:50.03\00:00:51.45 In today's program, we'll be talking 00:00:51.48\00:00:53.41 with Cheryl Doss, director of the Institute of World Mission. 00:00:53.44\00:00:57.18 She and her family have a long family history 00:00:57.21\00:01:00.14 of overseas mission service. 00:01:00.17\00:01:02.43 Now Dr. Doss and her team train missionaries, 00:01:02.46\00:01:05.61 international cross cultural 00:01:05.64\00:01:07.42 workers for the Adventist church. 00:01:07.45\00:01:09.95 We'll also talk with Pastor Delbert Pearman, 00:01:09.98\00:01:12.64 planning director for Adventist Mission 00:01:12.67\00:01:14.90 about projects funded by the mission offerings 00:01:14.93\00:01:17.82 collected every week in Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:17.85\00:01:20.92 churches around the world. 00:01:20.95\00:01:22.83 We'll also meet a pastor whose background gives him 00:01:22.86\00:01:25.25 a unique ability to minister to prisoners in the Philippines. 00:01:25.28\00:01:29.60 But first up, let's meet 00:01:29.63\00:01:31.44 a medical missionary serving in Malawi. 00:01:31.47\00:01:35.32 In 1908, a small hospital 00:01:39.29\00:01:42.04 was started near Makwasa, Malawi as part 00:01:42.07\00:01:44.26 of the Seventh-day Adventist church's 00:01:44.29\00:01:45.95 medical mission program. 00:01:45.98\00:01:47.88 For more than 100 years, this hospital has provided 00:01:47.91\00:01:51.06 physical and spiritual healing 00:01:51.09\00:01:52.66 to one of the poorest countries in Africa. 00:01:52.69\00:01:55.46 Malawi is home to more than 13 million people, 00:01:55.49\00:01:58.03 many of whom live in poverty 00:01:58.06\00:01:59.87 and are in dire need of medical care. 00:01:59.90\00:02:02.78 HIV and AIDS are rampant 00:02:02.81\00:02:04.71 and are changing the face of Malawi. 00:02:04.74\00:02:07.24 People young and old are affected by a disease 00:02:07.27\00:02:10.06 that shows no mercy in regards to race, 00:02:10.09\00:02:12.75 religion or social status. 00:02:12.78\00:02:15.33 Today Malamulo Adventist hospital has more than 200 beds 00:02:15.36\00:02:19.39 and runs numerous community outreach 00:02:19.42\00:02:21.58 and outpatient programs. 00:02:21.61\00:02:23.80 The hospital also runs a medical school 00:02:23.83\00:02:25.91 that trains lab technicians, medical officers and nurses. 00:02:25.94\00:02:29.87 The school attracts students from all over the country 00:02:29.90\00:02:33.00 and is an important part of the hospital's 00:02:33.03\00:02:34.98 outreach to the community. 00:02:35.01\00:02:37.03 Students learn skills that will help them earn a living 00:02:37.06\00:02:39.97 as well as saving lives of those in need. 00:02:40.00\00:02:42.89 It's impossible to count the number of lives 00:02:42.92\00:02:45.19 that have been saved and changed 00:02:45.22\00:02:47.33 by the holistic ministry of the dedicated 00:02:47.36\00:02:49.30 staff at the Malamulo. 00:02:49.33\00:02:51.71 One of the newest additions is Dr. Crischelle Shank, 00:02:51.74\00:02:54.77 she has been at Malamulo for less than one year 00:02:54.80\00:02:57.81 and part of her job is to train medical officer students 00:02:57.84\00:03:00.92 from the hospital's medical school. 00:03:00.95\00:03:03.26 She says the opportunity to work with students 00:03:03.29\00:03:05.57 was one of the attractions to coming to Malamulo. 00:03:05.60\00:03:08.74 Because as one person you can only do a set amount of work, 00:03:08.77\00:03:12.25 you can only get so many things done, 00:03:12.28\00:03:14.24 but if you are teaching, then you have a chance 00:03:14.27\00:03:16.34 to have a much huger impact. 00:03:16.37\00:03:19.39 As Dr. Shank works with her students, 00:03:19.42\00:03:21.64 she shows patients as they struggle 00:03:21.67\00:03:23.45 to find the answers to her questions. 00:03:23.48\00:03:26.29 As the young doctor herself, 00:03:26.32\00:03:27.92 she can relate to the training 00:03:27.95\00:03:29.61 and the struggles they are facing. 00:03:29.64\00:03:31.87 She went through it not too long ago herself, 00:03:31.90\00:03:34.62 after finishing the student's patients rounds 00:03:34.65\00:03:37.13 and training sessions, Dr. Shank checks 00:03:37.16\00:03:39.65 in on her own patients. 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.50 She's on high dose. 00:03:41.53\00:03:42.64 Yeah, she does. 00:03:42.67\00:03:44.06 Okay. This woman is HIV positive 00:03:44.09\00:03:47.35 and has given birth to twin daughters a few weeks ago. 00:03:47.38\00:03:50.91 She has pneumonia and can't breathe. 00:03:50.94\00:03:53.46 Her oxygen saturation level is dangerously low. 00:03:53.49\00:03:57.00 Dr. Shank calls for medicine to relieve the woman's pain 00:03:57.03\00:04:00.51 and to help her relax, so that she can breathe easier. 00:04:00.54\00:04:04.79 None can be found since supplies at the hospital are very low. 00:04:04.82\00:04:08.53 Dr. Shank relies on the one treatment method 00:04:08.56\00:04:11.28 that all mission doctors 00:04:11.31\00:04:12.47 are never in short supply of, prayer. 00:04:12.50\00:04:15.67 Dr. Shank says that HIV and AIDS patients 00:04:19.36\00:04:22.53 are a large part of their patient population. 00:04:22.56\00:04:26.25 And it's incredible here because we estimate 00:04:26.28\00:04:29.13 that probably 50 to 60% of our adults 00:04:29.16\00:04:32.18 were admitted either have HIV as the main cause 00:04:32.21\00:04:34.92 of their problems or also have HIV 00:04:34.95\00:04:37.42 that may be related to why they're here. 00:04:37.45\00:04:40.14 Despite the high number of HIV and AIDS cases, 00:04:40.17\00:04:43.51 the hospital is often able to help 00:04:43.54\00:04:45.49 transform their patient's lives. 00:04:45.52\00:04:48.09 Because we can take really sick people, 00:04:48.12\00:04:50.55 diagnose them properly, start them on medicine 00:04:50.58\00:04:52.86 and they improve dramatically. 00:04:52.89\00:04:55.55 Your faithful support, the mission offerings 00:04:55.58\00:04:57.88 each Sabbath help make it possible to train 00:04:57.91\00:05:00.43 and send medical doctors like Dr. Shank, 00:05:00.46\00:05:03.49 who are willing to dedicate 00:05:03.52\00:05:04.82 their lives to treating the sick, 00:05:04.85\00:05:06.80 poor and helpless, just like Jesus 00:05:06.83\00:05:09.45 did when He was on this earth. 00:05:09.48\00:05:12.20 I feel like it touches into what Jesus talked about 00:05:12.23\00:05:15.08 when He saw the multitudes and He had compassion on them, 00:05:15.11\00:05:18.63 I think that's really what it comes out to for me. 00:05:18.66\00:05:21.19 It's my pleasure to introduce Dr. Cheryl Doss, 00:05:38.96\00:05:41.50 who is the director of the Institute of World Mission 00:05:41.53\00:05:44.02 for the Seventh-day Adventist church Cheryl, 00:05:44.05\00:05:46.37 thank you so much for joining us. 00:05:46.40\00:05:47.72 Thank you, it's a pleasure. 00:05:47.75\00:05:48.81 Institute of World Mission, what is it? 00:05:48.84\00:05:50.63 What does it do? 00:05:50.66\00:05:52.47 Its main responsibility is the training of the missionaries 00:05:52.50\00:05:55.34 that the General Conference sends out. 00:05:55.37\00:05:57.76 And also providing training materials 00:05:57.79\00:06:00.65 for other missionaries, volunteers, 00:06:00.68\00:06:02.14 supporting ministries and so on. 00:06:02.17\00:06:04.35 As well as influencing the areas of mission, 00:06:04.38\00:06:10.69 issues and of mission strategy and that sort of thing. 00:06:10.72\00:06:14.54 That's a full load, I'd say. 00:06:14.57\00:06:16.15 Yes, actually it's rather broad, isn't it? 00:06:16.18\00:06:18.76 Yeah. Now the training of missionaries 00:06:18.79\00:06:21.70 before they go overseas to another assignment. 00:06:21.73\00:06:26.22 How long does it take, half a day, a day? 00:06:26.25\00:06:28.89 Would that, would that it would. 00:06:28.92\00:06:31.35 This is really major transition, we are asking families 00:06:31.38\00:06:33.79 to take because we mostly send married couples with children 00:06:33.82\00:06:37.01 and the children can be anywhere from babies to teenagers 00:06:37.04\00:06:40.61 and you know, moving a family anywhere 00:06:40.64\00:06:42.14 in the world is difficult, but especially 00:06:42.17\00:06:44.34 when we ask them to move to new country, 00:06:44.37\00:06:47.13 new language, new school systems, 00:06:47.16\00:06:49.17 living arrangements, and food, 00:06:49.20\00:06:50.84 everything different, new work assignment. 00:06:50.87\00:06:53.00 So we spent three weeks with the missionaries. 00:06:53.03\00:06:56.23 We do about three of those three week institutes a year, 00:06:56.26\00:07:00.36 two of them outside the U.S. 00:07:00.39\00:07:02.49 And the families come there, anywhere from 15 to 30 families 00:07:02.52\00:07:06.63 at a time, that are going out 00:07:06.66\00:07:08.65 and they come from all over the world. 00:07:08.68\00:07:11.15 It's just an amazing group of people. 00:07:11.18\00:07:13.78 So, Cheryl, you are a missiologist, 00:07:13.81\00:07:16.17 you are a trained academic but you are also 00:07:16.20\00:07:18.56 trained through experience. 00:07:18.59\00:07:19.98 Tell us where you've worked? 00:07:20.01\00:07:21.17 Well, I am a missionary kid. 00:07:21.20\00:07:23.50 My parents were missionaries in South Africa 00:07:23.53\00:07:26.82 and later in the Philippines and then my husband and I, 00:07:26.85\00:07:32.47 who is also-he is also a missionary kid, 00:07:32.50\00:07:34.24 went to the country of Malawi, very soon after he finished 00:07:34.27\00:07:37.77 with the seminary, so we were young, 00:07:37.80\00:07:39.77 our children were born there and grew up there 00:07:39.80\00:07:42.45 and we served there for 16 years. 00:07:42.48\00:07:44.99 And the influence is going on in the family too I believe. 00:07:45.02\00:07:48.19 Yes, our daughter and her husband 00:07:48.22\00:07:51.10 are in the Philippines at IS, it's their fifth country-- 00:07:51.13\00:07:55.56 our grandson who is seven years old has lived in five countries, 00:07:55.59\00:07:58.82 so this is the fifth country they've lived in...in mission. 00:07:58.85\00:08:02.61 And our son and his wife are in Kenya with their two daughters 00:08:02.64\00:08:07.15 and will soon be moving to Egypt. 00:08:07.18\00:08:09.53 So it's a we are missionary family. 00:08:09.56\00:08:12.65 So why is that so important to you, 00:08:12.68\00:08:14.24 why is missionary so important to you? 00:08:14.27\00:08:16.44 Well, because I think its God's heart. 00:08:16.47\00:08:20.38 God is the missionary God. 00:08:20.41\00:08:22.48 He-- from the very beginning in the Garden of Eden, 00:08:22.51\00:08:26.41 He came down to meet with humans 00:08:26.44\00:08:29.46 even after they were lost. 00:08:29.49\00:08:31.21 And He sent His son to this world. 00:08:31.24\00:08:33.25 He has a message for the world of His love and care 00:08:33.28\00:08:36.56 and His desire that we'd all be His sons and daughters 00:08:36.59\00:08:41.49 and join Him one day in Hi s kingdom. 00:08:41.52\00:08:44.00 And that's what mission is about. 00:08:44.03\00:08:46.30 So, Cheryl, when you are training missionaries, 00:08:46.33\00:08:49.75 you are training them to do something 00:08:49.78\00:08:51.30 that's very important to you. 00:08:51.33\00:08:52.82 Very important. 00:08:52.85\00:08:55.07 We get people who are, as many have worked for the church, 00:08:55.10\00:08:59.63 others have not, but we hope that 00:08:59.66\00:09:01.92 when by the time they finish our training, 00:09:01.95\00:09:03.49 they all want to be God's mission-- 00:09:03.52\00:09:05.93 taking God's mission to the world, 00:09:05.96\00:09:07.30 not just going as doctors or dentists or others. 00:09:07.33\00:09:09.58 Let's see a video right now of that mission institute. 00:09:09.61\00:09:12.39 The Institute of World Mission is one of those 00:09:25.46\00:09:27.47 very special tools that God has placed in the hands 00:09:27.50\00:09:30.70 of the Seventh-day Adventist church to prepare missionaries 00:09:30.73\00:09:35.27 to go into all kinds of cultures settings and situations. 00:09:35.30\00:09:40.66 Mission now is family, say good bye. 00:09:40.69\00:09:45.03 Mission now is family, please don't cry. 00:09:45.06\00:09:49.25 Mission now is family, go our way. 00:09:49.28\00:09:53.97 Tell Jesus say, we love today. 00:09:54.00\00:09:59.26 I'll never forget that song. 00:09:59.29\00:10:03.73 From the institute of World Mission in 2007, 00:10:03.76\00:10:08.53 when I came to United States for the first time 00:10:08.56\00:10:11.49 to work at the General Conference. 00:10:11.52\00:10:13.36 One of the enduring things about the Institute of World Mission 00:10:13.39\00:10:16.80 is the comradery that you have with others who are going out 00:10:16.83\00:10:20.55 for the same purpose and it was so exciting to pray together, 00:10:20.58\00:10:24.73 to meet together, to mingle with people 00:10:24.76\00:10:26.83 and you develop life long friendships. 00:10:26.86\00:10:30.82 Some of those people you may never see again, 00:10:30.85\00:10:33.44 but I want to tell you one of these days soon, 00:10:33.47\00:10:35.49 I will see them, and a lot of other people 00:10:35.52\00:10:38.58 who have been the results of the missionary efforts 00:10:38.61\00:10:43.99 of those people for we will meet them in heaven. 00:10:44.02\00:10:48.28 It was an amazing experience. 00:10:48.31\00:10:50.98 I think that was one of the best seminars 00:10:51.01\00:10:53.86 that I had in all my life. 00:10:53.89\00:10:55.89 To know about people, its roots, and food, and ideas, and dreams. 00:10:55.92\00:11:03.19 And having that understanding I really believe 00:11:03.22\00:11:07.06 that it's helping me to look to people 00:11:07.09\00:11:09.50 differently with more respect. 00:11:09.53\00:11:11.88 I highly recommend this Mission Institute, 00:11:11.91\00:11:15.87 as a tool for everybody because in the global world, 00:11:15.90\00:11:19.57 we need to have that kind of understanding. 00:11:19.60\00:11:22.25 Well, I am very thankful for the Institute of World Mission. 00:11:22.28\00:11:27.36 It was a meaningful experience. 00:11:27.39\00:11:30.20 The things that I learned, how to communicate 00:11:30.23\00:11:34.27 in a setting, in a cross cultural setting 00:11:34.30\00:11:37.98 and also for the leaders who helped me to with focus 00:11:38.01\00:11:42.37 my mission in my service in my new position. 00:11:42.40\00:11:47.20 It was almost a year after Barbara and I had returned 00:11:47.23\00:11:49.63 from the mission field when the General Conference 00:11:49.66\00:11:51.76 asked us to go to mission reentry and we said, why? 00:11:51.79\00:11:55.05 What difference would it make? 00:11:55.08\00:11:56.40 We already know where to shop, we know what clothes to wear. 00:11:56.43\00:11:59.41 We're not misfits anymore. 00:11:59.44\00:12:01.47 But we went and it was a life changing experience for us, 00:12:01.50\00:12:05.21 that mission reentry program was powerful, 00:12:05.24\00:12:08.39 that help us learn how to deal with issues 00:12:08.42\00:12:10.50 we didn't even know we were struggling with. 00:12:10.53\00:12:12.81 We appreciate what Institute World Mission did. 00:12:12.84\00:12:16.28 The best benefit that the Institute of World Mission 00:12:16.31\00:12:19.07 can bring to the church, helping prepare people to go out, 00:12:19.10\00:12:23.65 share this precious advent message and invite 00:12:23.68\00:12:27.11 them to be ready for Jesus' soon coming through his power 00:12:27.14\00:12:30.77 so that then we can be together for ever. 00:12:30.80\00:12:33.95 Thanks so much for joining us, Cheryl. 00:12:35.98\00:12:37.68 Please remember to pray for missionaries 00:12:37.71\00:12:40.24 who are serving all around the world. 00:12:40.27\00:12:42.20 I am pleased to welcome as a guest, 00:13:28.07\00:13:30.32 Delbert Pearman who is a colleague of mine 00:13:30.35\00:13:32.89 in the office of the Adventist Mission. 00:13:32.92\00:13:34.66 Pastor Pearman, thank you for joining us. 00:13:34.69\00:13:36.50 Yes. Now you have-- your and your family 00:13:36.53\00:13:38.64 have had extensive mission experience, living and working 00:13:38.67\00:13:42.67 in the Middle East, in Asia, in Africa. 00:13:42.70\00:13:46.53 And we often talk on this program about mission offerings 00:13:46.56\00:13:50.81 that the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:13:50.84\00:13:52.39 uses to support its mission program. 00:13:52.42\00:13:55.05 You would not have been serving in those fields, 00:13:55.08\00:13:57.47 if it were not for the mission offerings. 00:13:57.50\00:14:00.42 Tell us what are mission offerings used for in general? 00:14:00.45\00:14:04.62 The mission offerings are used to foster the work in parts 00:14:04.65\00:14:10.10 of the world that normally are able to generate sufficient 00:14:10.13\00:14:14.72 money locally in order to carry on the mission work. 00:14:14.75\00:14:18.37 And so the mission offering is a critical component 00:14:18.40\00:14:23.43 of the church's outreach to the world. 00:14:23.46\00:14:26.73 We annually when you look at just the mission offering 00:14:26.76\00:14:30.31 by itself, the undesignated mission 00:14:30.34\00:14:33.72 offerings it's about $80 million and that is used to help 00:14:33.75\00:14:39.59 to sponsor missionaries, cross culturally 00:14:39.62\00:14:43.81 to take expertise from one part of the world 00:14:43.84\00:14:46.47 to send it to another part of the world, 00:14:46.50\00:14:48.57 where expertise may not be available. 00:14:48.60\00:14:51.43 Expertise can be administrators of hospitals, 00:14:51.46\00:14:55.58 it could be physicians, airplane pilots, 00:14:55.61\00:15:00.91 even administrators, local church administrators 00:15:00.94\00:15:04.20 but it's a varied program. 00:15:04.23\00:15:06.19 Also in helping also to build infrastructure 00:15:06.22\00:15:10.46 to help build dormitories for schools, 00:15:10.49\00:15:14.02 to build radio studios and others 00:15:14.05\00:15:17.74 so it's a varied operation that the mission offering serves. 00:15:17.77\00:15:22.67 Now within the Adventist church, 00:15:22.70\00:15:24.52 we also talk about 13th Sabbath offerings, 00:15:24.55\00:15:27.67 what specifically are they? 00:15:27.70\00:15:29.55 The 13th Sabbath offering is a special offering 00:15:29.58\00:15:33.22 that's lifted once every 13th week. 00:15:33.25\00:15:36.98 And this offering is set aside to 25% of this offering 00:15:37.01\00:15:42.20 is used to sponsor or support a special project 00:15:42.23\00:15:46.58 in some part of the world. 00:15:46.61\00:15:48.50 It could be equipment, dormitory, 00:15:48.53\00:15:50.93 some major capital project 00:15:50.96\00:15:53.04 and then the other 75% goes into the general mission fund 00:15:53.07\00:15:57.74 to support ongoing missions 00:15:57.77\00:15:59.86 and sustainability of those programs. 00:15:59.89\00:16:02.23 And through the years, that 13th Sabbath offerings 00:16:02.26\00:16:05.69 has supported some wonderful projects. 00:16:05.72\00:16:08.59 I think for example of the Pitcairn which 00:16:08.62\00:16:12.66 was a special boat that went into the South Sea Islands 00:16:12.69\00:16:16.90 that helped start the Adventist work in that area. 00:16:16.93\00:16:22.36 The general mission offerings 00:16:22.39\00:16:23.95 that are collected every Sabbath, 00:16:23.98\00:16:25.68 can you give some examples of the types of projects 00:16:25.71\00:16:28.27 that it helps to support? 00:16:28.30\00:16:30.27 Yes, while the general offerings of course go towards 00:16:30.30\00:16:34.66 sustaining the missionaries and their work. 00:16:34.69\00:16:37.55 At one time the church used to send pastors 00:16:37.58\00:16:41.42 and administrators to actually carry out. 00:16:41.45\00:16:44.97 Today they still do that, but most 00:16:45.00\00:16:48.15 of it is for training local workers. 00:16:48.18\00:16:50.88 Another program is building, helping to build universities 00:16:50.91\00:16:54.69 around the world, so that local workers 00:16:54.72\00:16:57.49 can be trained and developed to carry on the work lessening 00:16:57.52\00:17:01.47 the need to bring in missionaries 00:17:01.50\00:17:03.32 from other parts of the world. 00:17:03.35\00:17:05.09 So our major focus of the mission offering today 00:17:05.12\00:17:07.93 is looking toward to what we call the 10/40 Window. 00:17:07.96\00:17:11.81 And this is an area of the world where very few Christians live, 00:17:11.84\00:17:16.87 and so we feel that we have a responsibility 00:17:16.90\00:17:20.29 to reach the 10/40 Window, so many of the missionaries 00:17:20.32\00:17:25.09 and the funding is moving toward that and less toward 00:17:25.12\00:17:29.70 the other parts of the world because 00:17:29.73\00:17:31.37 they are becoming more self-sustaining. 00:17:31.40\00:17:35.49 Some of the smaller projects that the mission offering 00:17:35.52\00:17:37.76 has supported, can you give me some illustrations of those? 00:17:37.79\00:17:40.83 Yes, in one country, in Asia and in different countries, 00:17:40.86\00:17:46.04 but I can think of one particular country 00:17:46.07\00:17:48.24 where we've set up a help to support a health, 00:17:48.27\00:17:52.46 vegetarian restaurant and helping with that 00:17:52.49\00:17:56.45 and this is the way of reaching the community 00:17:56.48\00:17:58.78 and out of this restaurant comes health training, 00:17:58.81\00:18:02.25 they do health screenings, so people can come 00:18:02.28\00:18:05.06 and get information about how to be healthy and stay healthy 00:18:05.09\00:18:09.59 as well as eat healthy foods. 00:18:09.62\00:18:11.76 Another on the continent of Africa, 00:18:11.79\00:18:14.60 we do help to set up a radio studio to reach 00:18:14.63\00:18:19.00 the masses of a particular locality. 00:18:19.03\00:18:22.97 Another in Europe, we can think of a setting up, 00:18:23.00\00:18:27.66 what they call, I know, in Bermuda they call a tack shop 00:18:27.69\00:18:30.93 but this is almost like a second hand shop, 00:18:30.96\00:18:33.34 where they sell good second hand clothing as well as they have 00:18:33.37\00:18:38.48 a restaurant where people can come, 00:18:38.51\00:18:40.88 it's right in the middle of an urban center, 00:18:40.91\00:18:44.19 where businessmen can come in, they can get some nice herb tea, 00:18:44.22\00:18:48.27 and once a, once or twice a week the local pastor 00:18:48.30\00:18:53.14 would actually be there to meet the patrons 00:18:53.17\00:18:55.81 and to discuss with them, you know, some of their concerns 00:18:55.84\00:18:59.52 and to pray with them, so there are lots of opportunities. 00:18:59.55\00:19:02.53 And another I can think 00:19:02.56\00:19:05.81 of is a boat in Poland supporting 00:19:05.84\00:19:11.14 some young people at a church which had kayaks 00:19:11.17\00:19:15.62 and they would go down this river, 00:19:15.65\00:19:17.74 we help to provide the translation 00:19:17.77\00:19:20.89 and the production of tracks when it comes to health 00:19:20.92\00:19:23.87 as well as religious material, and they took a week 00:19:23.90\00:19:28.07 to travel down on this river and they would stop 00:19:28.10\00:19:30.03 by the communities along the river banks 00:19:30.06\00:19:32.52 and they would stop and hand out tracks and make friends 00:19:32.55\00:19:36.62 and then they would move along, 00:19:36.65\00:19:38.05 so these are some of the ideas of how the small projects 00:19:38.08\00:19:42.44 that the mission offering helps to support along 00:19:42.47\00:19:45.91 with the large projects of building dormitories 00:19:45.94\00:19:48.66 and schools and hospitals and others. 00:19:48.69\00:19:51.85 Delbert, you've had extensive experience as a missionary. 00:19:51.88\00:19:54.59 Someone asked you, can I be a missionary? 00:19:54.62\00:19:57.53 Well, how do you respond? 00:19:57.56\00:19:58.76 Oh, yes. God calls us all to be missionaries. 00:19:58.79\00:20:01.85 One you can start, right where you are at home 00:20:01.88\00:20:05.21 or talk to your pastor or your conference 00:20:05.24\00:20:08.56 and ask how can I get involved in missions. 00:20:08.59\00:20:11.06 So there are tremendous 00:20:11.09\00:20:12.12 opportunities available for missions. 00:20:12.15\00:20:14.49 Delbert, thanks so much for joining us. Yes. 00:20:14.52\00:20:17.13 Viewers at home, God has some sort of a call for you. 00:20:17.16\00:20:20.79 It may not be to go to foreign lands but may be a call 00:20:20.82\00:20:24.31 to just be more faithful in supporting 00:20:24.34\00:20:26.13 mission work that is happening. 00:20:26.16\00:20:27.28 But thank you for your prayers and your financial support 00:20:27.31\00:20:30.00 for mission that is taking place all around the world. 00:20:30.03\00:20:33.17 Not many pastors wake up their family 00:20:44.35\00:20:46.22 by sounding like a rooster, but Eugene dela Pena 00:20:46.25\00:20:49.48 is not your typical pastor. 00:20:49.51\00:20:51.55 The smile on his face today has replaced the anger 00:20:51.58\00:20:54.97 and hate that filled him more than 20 years ago. 00:20:55.00\00:20:57.88 Eugene used to be a gang member 00:20:57.91\00:21:00.00 and was first arrested at the age of 13. 00:21:00.03\00:21:03.12 In all he was thrown into jail more than 20 times. 00:21:03.15\00:21:07.26 Well, in court awaiting trial Eugene escaped. 00:21:07.29\00:21:10.14 He spent the next several years running from the law. 00:21:10.17\00:21:13.87 One day Eugene was introduced to Pastor Nelson Paulo. 00:21:13.90\00:21:17.92 Pastor Paulo wasn't fazed by the Eugene's rough past, 00:21:17.95\00:21:21.44 with true Christian love, he accepted Eugene 00:21:21.47\00:21:24.32 and helped him turn his life around. 00:21:24.35\00:21:27.58 So I was a little hesitant but I know God provided a way 00:21:27.61\00:21:31.17 that I would make friendship with him. 00:21:31.20\00:21:34.05 Pastor Paulo taught Eugene how to pray. 00:21:34.08\00:21:36.69 And a decision to accept Jesus soon followed. 00:21:36.72\00:21:39.70 Eugene then made another choice. 00:21:39.73\00:21:43.53 During the time my perspective was changed my desire, 00:21:43.56\00:21:46.88 my priority, so I decided to go back 00:21:46.91\00:21:51.26 to school despite of my age. 00:21:51.29\00:21:55.78 Today Eugene is a pastor and a youth director 00:21:55.81\00:21:59.09 for a conference in the Philippines. 00:21:59.12\00:22:01.50 Once a week he visits local jail cells and reaches out to people 00:22:01.53\00:22:04.74 that were once just like him. 00:22:04.77\00:22:07.45 He can relate to them in a way that most other pastors can't. 00:22:07.48\00:22:10.61 Eugene knows where each of these men have come 00:22:10.64\00:22:13.43 from and the journey that they are on. 00:22:13.46\00:22:16.06 He has been in their shoes and can tell them 00:22:16.09\00:22:18.37 that there is a God who is willing to change their lives, 00:22:18.40\00:22:21.49 to forgive them for all their sins and past transgressions. 00:22:21.52\00:22:26.01 The prisoners react positively to Eugene's message. 00:22:26.04\00:22:29.45 Some ask him to pray for them that they will find peace 00:22:29.48\00:22:32.23 and forgiveness from their troubled lives. 00:22:32.26\00:22:34.88 Eugene feels that the prisoners accept him and a message 00:22:34.91\00:22:37.74 that he freely shares with them. 00:22:37.77\00:22:40.76 You know in the midst of their own invented lingo, 00:22:40.79\00:22:43.09 they have their own language so I can easily have access 00:22:43.12\00:22:47.06 to their hearts because, because I know their language, 00:22:47.09\00:22:50.90 may be because I was there. 00:22:50.93\00:22:54.65 Pastors around the world are changing lives everyday. 00:22:54.68\00:22:58.99 Each one brings a unique gift that God has given them 00:22:59.02\00:23:02.24 to be a part of their ministry. 00:23:02.27\00:23:03.93 Eugene's life changed when he decided to accept Jesus, 00:23:03.96\00:23:07.81 and when he decided to go to an Adventist school. 00:23:07.84\00:23:10.88 When
