Understanding other cultures and world religions, 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.24 education in India and a family with mission in their genes, 00:00:03.27\00:00:07.85 all that and more coming up 00:00:07.88\00:00:09.50 right here on "Global Mission snapshots" 00:00:09.53\00:00:12.37 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:23.28\00:00:25.83 Jesus gave us a command. He gave us a mission. 00:00:25.86\00:00:30.91 Jesus said, go. 00:00:30.94\00:00:33.80 "Go unto all the world, telling them of His love." 00:00:33.83\00:00:38.67 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:38.70\00:00:43.46 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:48.07\00:00:50.65 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:50.68\00:00:51.99 If you have ever traveled to another country 00:00:52.02\00:00:54.26 you know there are often 00:00:54.29\00:00:55.48 major differences in language and culture. 00:00:55.51\00:00:58.76 Those differences impact our ability to shop, eat, socialize 00:00:58.79\00:01:03.18 and most important our ability to share the gospel. 00:01:03.21\00:01:07.16 Today we will be talking with Cheryl Doss, 00:01:07.19\00:01:09.11 director of the Institute of World Mission. 00:01:09.14\00:01:12.21 Every year Dr. Doss and her team train the Adventist churches 00:01:12.24\00:01:16.28 international mission workers how to be more effective 00:01:16.31\00:01:19.92 when they are living and working in other cultures. 00:01:19.95\00:01:23.89 We will also talk with Dr. Rick McEdward, 00:01:23.92\00:01:26.02 director of the Global Mission Study Centers 00:01:26.05\00:01:28.62 about how to communicate with people 00:01:28.65\00:01:31.41 whose understanding of religion is totally different to ours. 00:01:31.44\00:01:35.93 Where do you even start 00:01:35.96\00:01:37.62 if they don't believe in the Bible or in God? 00:01:37.65\00:01:41.09 But first up, let's visit a family with a heart for mission 00:01:41.12\00:01:45.32 who have passed on the spirit of service to their children. 00:01:45.35\00:01:48.96 As a physician, as you are trained, 00:01:56.02\00:01:59.42 your primary goal in training is to take good 00:01:59.45\00:02:02.93 medical care of people to make sure 00:02:02.96\00:02:04.83 that their health is cared for in a proper way. 00:02:04.86\00:02:08.22 But as time is gone by I realized that, 00:02:08.25\00:02:11.41 that's really not the primary issue. 00:02:11.44\00:02:13.85 That my primary goal is to give people to Jesus and to know Him, 00:02:13.88\00:02:19.96 and so I began to see medical practice 00:02:19.99\00:02:23.08 as a tool to lead people to Jesus. 00:02:23.11\00:02:26.41 And so I tried to focus on somehow 00:02:26.44\00:02:30.14 using our medical practice not only as a tool to help people 00:02:30.17\00:02:34.76 have a healthier life until recover from disease 00:02:34.79\00:02:37.64 but even more importantly to come to know 00:02:37.67\00:02:40.45 the one who can provide eternal life. 00:02:40.48\00:02:42.50 Greg, our oldest he always wanted to be a physician. 00:02:44.08\00:02:48.24 He has ended up being trained as a surgeon and served overseas 00:02:48.27\00:02:51.22 and many different places most recently in Cameroon. 00:02:51.25\00:02:54.33 I would say it was probably somewhere in high school 00:03:01.29\00:03:03.44 that I decided I really wanted 00:03:03.47\00:03:05.70 to be a missionary and specifically a physician. 00:03:05.73\00:03:10.04 I guess it was in medical school in Loma Linda, 00:03:14.99\00:03:16.76 where it was really solidified and I choose to be part of 00:03:16.79\00:03:19.53 the Deferred Mission Appointee Program. 00:03:19.56\00:03:21.40 I did three and half years of residency 00:03:27.10\00:03:30.05 in family practice training and haven't seen anything here 00:03:30.08\00:03:34.25 that I ever saw in family practice training. 00:03:34.28\00:03:36.27 As a missionary my goal is too pronged, 00:03:39.04\00:03:41.42 I mean of course I'm a physician so I want to aspect, 00:03:41.45\00:03:44.61 I want to reach their physical needs 00:03:44.64\00:03:47.74 but more importantly we need to reach their spiritual needs. 00:03:47.77\00:03:51.48 And there are certain people at the hospital 00:03:51.51\00:03:54.16 that we've been able to minister to 00:03:54.19\00:03:56.16 and we have seen people who've had tetanus 00:03:56.19\00:03:59.42 who have been sick in hospital for many weeks 00:03:59.45\00:04:04.12 and then for a long recovery period after that. 00:04:04.15\00:04:07.84 And with time and praying every single day with them, 00:04:07.87\00:04:11.01 they have come to know Jesus and give their heart to God 00:04:11.04\00:04:14.97 and I think that's the most encouragement 00:04:15.00\00:04:17.75 is individual lives have been changed. 00:04:17.78\00:04:20.42 Cristy, our middle daughter also wanted to be a physician 00:04:27.56\00:04:31.06 since she was young and served in Malamulo Hospital in Malawi. 00:04:31.09\00:04:35.97 I love the chance to come to a place 00:04:47.84\00:04:52.04 and care for people who know what we are really caring for. 00:04:52.07\00:04:55.86 I find that intensely satisfying 00:04:57.23\00:05:00.98 and I think that's why I've always wanted to do this. 00:05:01.01\00:05:03.86 If you stop working at home, your patients get upset 00:05:03.89\00:05:07.34 and they go see someone else. 00:05:07.37\00:05:08.86 Here people die and I think that's what 00:05:08.89\00:05:11.85 I find truly gratifying about being here. 00:05:11.88\00:05:15.78 I feel like it touches into what Jesus talked about 00:05:15.81\00:05:19.02 when He saw the multitudes and He had compassion on them. 00:05:19.05\00:05:22.68 I think that's really what it comes on to for me. 00:05:22.71\00:05:25.97 We always think of blessings 00:05:26.00\00:05:27.30 as being safe or happy or things like that. 00:05:27.33\00:05:31.40 But I think you can be blessed 00:05:31.43\00:05:32.48 by loneliness and by being homesick. 00:05:32.51\00:05:35.74 I think God Jesus will bless you in a different way 00:05:35.77\00:05:38.12 and by being here I'm getting to be molded by God 00:05:38.15\00:05:43.30 and you don't often get to see that very clearly in your life. 00:05:43.33\00:05:46.28 Heather, our youngest has taken a different track. 00:05:50.55\00:05:54.90 She really was not interested in medicine, 00:05:54.93\00:05:56.43 which was fine with us, so she trained as a teacher 00:05:56.46\00:05:59.41 and taught elementary school for many years 00:05:59.44\00:06:01.70 and now is married to a pastor, and she and her husband 00:06:01.73\00:06:06.24 are pastoring four churches in Kansas 00:06:06.27\00:06:09.85 and I guess I see that, she is just as much a missionary 00:06:09.88\00:06:13.23 as our other children because she is there helping people 00:06:13.26\00:06:17.01 study the gospel, just in a different form. 00:06:17.04\00:06:19.76 I mean that is God's mission 00:06:19.79\00:06:21.87 to go over and help people wherever we are, 00:06:21.90\00:06:24.76 whether we are here in the U.S. or whether we are out of U.S., 00:06:24.79\00:06:27.68 go and help people and teach them about the Lord 00:06:27.71\00:06:30.93 as well as helping their physical well beings. 00:06:30.96\00:06:34.87 ( praying in foreign language ) 00:06:34.90\00:06:41.58 There are certain people that I felt I have made 00:06:41.61\00:06:46.50 a real difference in their life both in a physical aspect 00:06:46.53\00:06:51.88 and in being able to have the chance of witnessing to them. 00:06:51.91\00:06:57.59 Since I have been here probably the verse that comes to me 00:06:57.62\00:07:00.36 the most to me is 1 John 3:18 and that says, 00:07:00.39\00:07:05.74 "My dear brothers, let us not love in word 00:07:05.77\00:07:08.50 or in tongue but in deed and in truth" 00:07:08.53\00:07:11.59 and that's really what I have been talking 00:07:11.62\00:07:13.40 to my employees here about. 00:07:13.43\00:07:14.74 Let's love in truth each other our patients, 00:07:14.77\00:07:18.62 let's really share what God is like here. 00:07:18.65\00:07:21.86 Donna and I have learned to pray for our kids a lot. 00:07:23.37\00:07:26.27 We say Lord, we can't take care of these kids, 00:07:26.30\00:07:28.83 we can't provide for them, You are gonna 00:07:28.86\00:07:30.44 have to take care of them, I'll over-do in Your work. 00:07:30.47\00:07:33.00 You go to the point where you realize, 00:07:33.03\00:07:35.81 Lord, they are Yours they are not ours. 00:07:35.84\00:07:37.68 They never will be ours they have always been Yours. 00:07:37.71\00:07:40.73 And you let them go that doesn't mean you don't miss them, 00:07:40.76\00:07:44.01 that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt, 00:07:44.04\00:07:45.68 that doesn't mean you don't miss family times of them, 00:07:45.71\00:07:48.20 special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas 00:07:48.23\00:07:50.58 or you know Easter or things like that are family, 00:07:50.61\00:07:54.03 traditions that you realize that they are doing something 00:07:54.06\00:07:58.22 far more valuable that's eternal. 00:07:58.25\00:08:00.05 I'm delighted to welcome my friend and colleague 00:08:19.26\00:08:22.07 Dr. Cheryl Doss who is director of Institute of World Mission 00:08:22.10\00:08:25.83 for the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:08:25.86\00:08:27.69 Cheryl, thanks so much for joining us. 00:08:27.72\00:08:29.71 Institute of World Mission, 00:08:29.74\00:08:31.23 briefly what is it, what does it do? 00:08:31.26\00:08:33.51 Its main responsibility is for the training 00:08:33.54\00:08:36.22 of the missionaries of the General Conference centers. 00:08:36.25\00:08:38.69 You still send missionaries? 00:08:38.72\00:08:39.77 Oh, yes. I know that question, that's very painful to me. 00:08:39.80\00:08:43.97 Some people don't realize it but yes, we do. 00:08:44.00\00:08:46.38 At least 100 families go out a year, often more than that 00:08:46.41\00:08:50.69 and there is probably between 715 to 1,000 at anyone-- 00:08:50.72\00:08:54.52 missionaries at anyone time in the field. 00:08:54.55\00:08:57.00 Now why do they need training? 00:08:57.03\00:08:58.59 They don't just go out in faith and-- 00:08:58.62\00:09:00.14 Yeah. Hopefully they do go out with faith, 00:09:00.17\00:09:03.75 but as you can imagine moving a family overseas 00:09:03.78\00:09:06.84 is a major adjustment time, major transition for families. 00:09:06.87\00:09:11.48 Most of them go as married couples 00:09:11.51\00:09:13.38 with children aged from tiny babies to teenagers 00:09:13.41\00:09:18.14 and sometimes several children, and this always quite an issue 00:09:18.17\00:09:22.38 just they are moving a family within a home country. 00:09:22.41\00:09:24.96 Not only taking them to a foreign country, 00:09:24.99\00:09:26.77 foreign foods, foreign-- a new language, 00:09:26.80\00:09:30.25 a new living environment and work and all the rest. 00:09:30.28\00:09:33.36 And it gets even more complex 00:09:33.39\00:09:34.93 when you think about how different each family is. 00:09:34.96\00:09:37.58 Well, that's a wonderful thing 00:09:37.61\00:09:39.69 about the General Conference Mission Services that it truly 00:09:39.72\00:09:43.71 does send missionaries from everywhere to everywhere. 00:09:43.74\00:09:46.67 The last mission institute we held in Brazil last month, 00:09:46.70\00:09:51.34 had 14 families from 12 different home countries. 00:09:51.37\00:09:55.43 Six different continents 00:09:55.46\00:09:56.68 who represented at that mission institute. 00:09:56.71\00:09:58.89 Different languages, they come with different skills, 00:09:58.92\00:10:01.67 of course they go out to do different types of jobs. 00:10:01.70\00:10:04.36 But most are highly qualified professionals 00:10:04.39\00:10:07.01 going to do our specialists type work where they go. 00:10:07.04\00:10:10.34 Doctors, dentists, church administrators, 00:10:10.37\00:10:13.50 teachers and professors and so agro workers and so on. 00:10:13.53\00:10:17.62 Can you introduce us to some of the missionary families? 00:10:17.65\00:10:21.09 Yes, I can, you know, there are so many 00:10:21.12\00:10:24.40 I hate to pick any one out. So I will just kind of take 00:10:24.43\00:10:27.57 a smattering from the last mission institute. 00:10:27.60\00:10:30.21 We had a family there, the Lichtenwalter family 00:10:30.24\00:10:34.68 who had spent 27 years 00:10:34.71\00:10:36.04 pastoring a church in Berrien Springs, Michigan. 00:10:36.07\00:10:38.63 And now, Larry is going out to be the theology dean 00:10:38.66\00:10:44.30 there at the school as they try to develop 00:10:44.33\00:10:45.90 their theology program at Middle East University. 00:10:45.93\00:10:48.18 So going to a Muslim context, moving with his wife 00:10:48.21\00:10:53.22 and leaving their children at home, 00:10:53.25\00:10:54.62 this is a major transition for a family. 00:10:54.65\00:10:56.81 Where is the university? 00:10:56.84\00:10:58.24 In Beirut, Lebanon. 00:10:58.27\00:11:01.10 Another family at the other end of the family spectrum 00:11:01.13\00:11:05.89 came with very small baby just four months old. 00:11:05.92\00:11:09.55 And they are serving in Colombia. 00:11:09.58\00:11:13.57 And they have another little boy, Vanston Archbold 00:11:13.60\00:11:19.59 and his wife Ketsia and they had been there for short time. 00:11:19.62\00:11:25.59 Actually, they came originally from Columbia 00:11:25.62\00:11:28.83 but immigrated to the U.S. and so having spent 00:11:28.86\00:11:31.83 many years in the U.S. now as young people growing up there, 00:11:31.86\00:11:36.08 they are going back to this country 00:11:36.11\00:11:38.58 to a rather mission post on an island off the coast. 00:11:38.61\00:11:42.04 And so this is another kind of adjustment. 00:11:42.07\00:11:45.09 Often times, missionaries find that returning to a home country 00:11:45.12\00:11:48.67 can be more difficult than the initial going out 00:11:48.70\00:11:51.26 into a host country. That's interesting. 00:11:51.29\00:11:54.55 We had families from Australia that are serving in the islands. 00:11:54.58\00:12:01.93 Families from Africa serving in other parts of Africa 00:12:01.96\00:12:06.06 and so it's a wonderful mix of people 00:12:06.09\00:12:09.10 that we put together at the Mission Institute. 00:12:09.13\00:12:11.58 Yeah, well, Cheryl, you are training for how long? 00:12:11.61\00:12:15.43 How long is their training? 00:12:15.46\00:12:16.51 It's a three week training program 00:12:16.54\00:12:18.16 and one of the things we do is, 00:12:18.19\00:12:21.46 we hope to kind of model in the institute 00:12:21.49\00:12:24.21 both the attitudes and the experiences 00:12:24.24\00:12:26.58 that people will face when they get out into the field. 00:12:26.61\00:12:29.69 Because it's not enough just to think about something 00:12:29.72\00:12:33.60 logically one must be able to 00:12:33.63\00:12:36.02 actually practice what one learns. 00:12:36.05\00:12:38.40 And so we ask the group to mix themselves up 00:12:38.43\00:12:41.98 by different nationalities, by different types of profession, 00:12:42.01\00:12:45.95 by work assignments and family age groups, 00:12:45.98\00:12:50.76 some experience overseas. 00:12:50.79\00:12:52.17 And then we set learning tasks. They set tables 00:12:52.20\00:12:55.43 and we set learning tasks for them to discuss together. 00:12:55.46\00:12:58.39 And I think one of the most beautiful things for me is 00:12:58.42\00:13:02.60 to watch these families from so many different places 00:13:02.63\00:13:05.48 come to really love and appreciate each other. 00:13:05.51\00:13:07.55 So little peace of heaven. At the last institute I had one, 00:13:07.58\00:13:12.12 one table there was a family from Norway going to Israel, 00:13:12.15\00:13:16.68 a family from Albania in Australia going to Fiji, 00:13:16.71\00:13:21.33 and a family from Zimbabwe serving in Tanzania. 00:13:21.36\00:13:25.70 Towards the end of the institute one of the woman at that tables 00:13:25.73\00:13:29.81 was with one of the other woman, 00:13:29.84\00:13:31.63 the African and one of the European woman 00:13:31.66\00:13:34.77 and they were sitting, walking along and 00:13:34.80\00:13:37.88 the European woman said to me, I would never believed you 00:13:37.91\00:13:41.52 if you told me that we would be best friends 00:13:41.55\00:13:43.96 at the end of three weeks. Is that right? 00:13:43.99\00:13:45.68 You know, so they can pray for each other, 00:13:45.71\00:13:47.46 they can support each other. 00:13:47.49\00:13:48.94 And I always say if you can learn to love somebody 00:13:48.97\00:13:51.22 from another culture while at Mission Institute 00:13:51.25\00:13:53.55 then probably you know at least it's possible 00:13:53.58\00:13:55.66 to do that when you get out there. 00:13:55.69\00:13:57.56 Yeah. Now do you ever have somebody come to training 00:13:57.59\00:14:02.02 and you decided well, you know, recommend, we actually 00:14:02.05\00:14:04.66 don't think that you are well suited for this assignment. 00:14:04.69\00:14:08.23 That's not really our responsibility, but we do 00:14:08.26\00:14:11.75 what we do at Mission Institute is try to empower people 00:14:11.78\00:14:15.47 for whatever assignment God has called them to. 00:14:15.50\00:14:17.67 We have a psychologist who comes to every mission institute 00:14:17.70\00:14:21.39 and interviews each family if there are needs, 00:14:21.42\00:14:24.18 particular family needs that they want to talk about with her 00:14:24.21\00:14:27.85 they can do that, they can raise the issues. 00:14:27.88\00:14:29.93 And we have seen families greatly blessed. 00:14:29.96\00:14:35.46 Marriages improved and so on during Mission Institute. 00:14:35.49\00:14:39.27 One of the journals I read the Fact Institute at the end, 00:14:39.30\00:14:43.10 the woman said, this institute has brought me closer to God, 00:14:43.13\00:14:47.43 than I ever thought possible. Fantastic. 00:14:47.46\00:14:49.35 Cheryl, thank you for you and your team 00:14:49.38\00:14:51.18 doing at the Institute of World Mission. 00:14:51.21\00:14:52.94 Thanks for joining us today. And thank you 00:14:52.97\00:14:54.24 to the missionaries who are willing to go. 00:14:54.27\00:14:56.83 Exactly And viewers at home, please pray for Cheryl 00:14:56.86\00:14:59.20 and her team in this very important work 00:14:59.23\00:15:01.38 and thank you for your continuing mission offerings 00:15:01.41\00:15:03.86 that make it possible 00:15:03.89\00:15:05.66 for missionaries to go out into the field 00:15:05.69\00:15:07.29 and don't forget to pray every day 00:15:07.32\00:15:10.30 for missionaries serving the Lord. 00:15:10.33\00:15:12.70 My guest is Dr. Rick McEdward, 00:16:00.95\00:16:02.77 who is the director of the Global Mission Study Centers 00:16:02.80\00:16:05.18 and works in the office of the Adventist Mission. 00:16:05.21\00:16:06.99 Welcome, Rick. Thanks, Gary. 00:16:07.02\00:16:08.57 Briefly describe the Global Mission Study Centers? 00:16:08.60\00:16:11.76 Well, there are six study centers, 00:16:11.79\00:16:14.19 these six study centers address understanding for Adventist, 00:16:14.22\00:16:18.89 the various world religions and also urban setting. 00:16:18.92\00:16:22.67 So there is different to all religions, 00:16:22.70\00:16:24.51 we really haven't done much in addressing our faith to, 00:16:24.54\00:16:27.25 so it's trying to help people understand 00:16:27.28\00:16:28.85 and be a positive witness. 00:16:28.88\00:16:30.63 Now, Rick, 00:16:30.66\00:16:32.16 when we look at the history of the Adventist church, 00:16:32.19\00:16:34.21 most new members have come from among anamist 00:16:34.24\00:16:38.44 or among from other Christian believers. 00:16:38.47\00:16:43.08 How well equipped are we, 00:16:43.11\00:16:44.66 I mean how well trained are we 00:16:44.69\00:16:46.16 to be able to talk to people from other religions? 00:16:46.19\00:16:49.10 Even in countries that are majority from another faith 00:16:49.13\00:16:53.61 honestly, we still focus our efforts on Christians, 00:16:53.64\00:16:57.79 Christian groups and we really haven't done much 00:16:57.82\00:17:01.19 in sharing our faith in a positive way 00:17:01.22\00:17:03.91 with these other groups. 00:17:03.94\00:17:05.46 What a challenge it is 00:17:05.49\00:17:08.35 because we are tend to use a message that is-- 00:17:08.38\00:17:12.78 that is really geared for sharing with other Christians. 00:17:12.81\00:17:17.44 Right, now, somebody might be viewing this and saying, 00:17:17.47\00:17:19.23 well, this is all very interesting 00:17:19.26\00:17:20.58 but I never planned to travel overseas 00:17:20.61\00:17:22.72 that's not an issue for me. 00:17:22.75\00:17:24.19 Well, you know, the great part of that is 00:17:24.22\00:17:26.24 you don't have to go overseas 00:17:26.27\00:17:27.45 to find somebody from another religion. 00:17:27.48\00:17:31.06 If there are 37 million immigrants 00:17:31.09\00:17:34.81 even in the country of United States 00:17:34.84\00:17:37.37 there are 14 million 00:17:37.40\00:17:40.67 non-Englishspeaking households in North America. 00:17:40.70\00:17:43.99 There are three quarters of a million students 00:17:44.02\00:17:48.88 from other parts of the world who may speak English 00:17:48.91\00:17:51.70 but come from other religious backgrounds 00:17:51.73\00:17:53.69 so you don't have to look very far 00:17:53.72\00:17:55.42 to see that there is people from other walks of life 00:17:55.45\00:17:58.84 even our next neighbor and that's true of United States, 00:17:58.87\00:18:02.69 it's certainly trip to Canada, parts of Europe 00:18:02.72\00:18:05.06 any where, where people flock too for 00:18:05.09\00:18:07.13 both economy and education. 00:18:07.16\00:18:10.20 There is gonna be opportunities that we haven't taken. 00:18:10.23\00:18:12.93 And some of the statistics show that 00:18:12.96\00:18:15.61 people from other world religions feel that 00:18:15.64\00:18:19.07 Christians are in a different world to them 00:18:19.10\00:18:22.20 here in the Untied States. 00:18:22.23\00:18:23.27 They don't have any contact. 00:18:23.30\00:18:24.33 They don't have any friends with any Christians. 00:18:24.36\00:18:26.19 Yeah, it's amazing to think that 00:18:26.22\00:18:29.16 in places like Europe, United States, 00:18:29.19\00:18:31.87 that around 70 percent of those 00:18:31.90\00:18:34.05 from a Hindu background have no Christian friends. 00:18:34.08\00:18:38.22 Now, 65% of those from a Muslim background 00:18:38.25\00:18:41.04 don't know one other Christian person. 00:18:41.07\00:18:43.37 So I mean we are talking about a stat that are shaming to us. 00:18:43.40\00:18:46.83 Yeah, so we might meet them in a store 00:18:46.86\00:18:50.17 they may be cleaners at a laundry, 00:18:50.20\00:18:53.11 they may be driving a taxi, they may our dentist 00:18:53.14\00:18:56.16 but we don't make friends with them. 00:18:56.19\00:18:57.73 That's right, and I think that--that shows us 00:18:57.76\00:19:01.94 that we may be reluctant based on may be stereo types, 00:19:01.97\00:19:07.46 may be other reasons 00:19:07.49\00:19:08.96 but we don't know how to build those first few bridges. 00:19:08.99\00:19:11.50 Okay, so, one of the viewers says, 00:19:11.53\00:19:14.38 okay, I see the importance of this 00:19:14.41\00:19:16.56 I have a neighbor from a different religion, 00:19:16.59\00:19:19.23 I don't know where to start. 00:19:19.26\00:19:20.94 Well, the easy place is- where my family started 00:19:20.97\00:19:24.27 we have neighborhood that has a wide variety of people in it. 00:19:24.30\00:19:28.34 We are in a urban setting and we have neighbor from Kuwait, 00:19:28.37\00:19:32.81 we have neighbors from Taiwan, we have neighbors from Africa, 00:19:32.84\00:19:35.47 so we have a wide variety 00:19:35.50\00:19:37.31 and you know, my wife and kids they just said, 00:19:37.34\00:19:39.52 well, let's bake some bread, mom. 00:19:39.55\00:19:41.03 And they went holiday time or anytime and they delivered 00:19:41.06\00:19:44.98 loaf of bread to various people in the community. 00:19:45.01\00:19:48.11 And you are telling me just earlier that 00:19:48.14\00:19:49.79 how you made contact with your neighbors from another country. 00:19:49.82\00:19:52.65 Well, we just gotten back from a trip to Thailand. 00:19:52.68\00:19:54.63 I traveled there for my work and this particular trip 00:19:54.66\00:19:57.22 I took my family along. 00:19:57.25\00:19:59.08 While we were there we thought of our neighbors, 00:19:59.11\00:20:02.05 we picked up a few things that would be special. 00:20:02.08\00:20:04.83 We asked in Thailand, what would be special? 00:20:04.86\00:20:07.33 And when we come back we went pay them a visit. 00:20:07.36\00:20:10.59 And as we gave them just a few little bag of things 00:20:10.62\00:20:14.86 as they unpacked it I saw tears well up in the ladies eyes, 00:20:14.89\00:20:21.30 saying I haven't seen these things for 20 years. 00:20:21.33\00:20:24.37 These are special to me, 00:20:24.40\00:20:26.22 and we formed a special bond of friendship through that. 00:20:26.25\00:20:29.32 So Rick, what are some of the principles 00:20:29.35\00:20:31.37 that we should keep in mind when we are talking with people 00:20:31.40\00:20:34.55 when come from a different faith, tradition? 00:20:34.58\00:20:36.38 Well, you know, first of all 00:20:36.41\00:20:38.21 love covers a multitude of friends, right. 00:20:38.24\00:20:40.63 So I think we ought to practice 00:20:40.66\00:20:42.82 the gift of love and hospitality. 00:20:42.85\00:20:44.85 You know, inviting somebody to your house, 00:20:44.88\00:20:46.53 loving them in someway that's the obvious one. 00:20:46.56\00:20:49.01 Second is may be we don't understand, 00:20:49.04\00:20:51.54 but may be we can listen and learn. 00:20:51.57\00:20:53.83 If we try to tell before we accept, 00:20:53.86\00:20:58.64 before we even understand who people are. 00:20:58.67\00:21:01.35 Then we make the first mistake and that is 00:21:01.38\00:21:03.58 we are not willing to allow somebody to share their heart. 00:21:03.61\00:21:07.96 I think there is a third one and that is pray and pray 00:21:07.99\00:21:12.98 not only for them but pray for the right opportunity 00:21:13.01\00:21:17.03 for you to share of whatever witness now. 00:21:17.06\00:21:20.17 Whatever witness is complicated, 00:21:20.20\00:21:22.03 it's not so simple with just everybody 00:21:22.06\00:21:24.28 but you want to have the right timing 00:21:24.31\00:21:26.11 and you don't want to be preaching at people 00:21:26.14\00:21:28.81 you want to share with them. 00:21:28.84\00:21:30.25 So, you are talking about a testimony, 00:21:30.28\00:21:33.28 a personal testimony? 00:21:33.31\00:21:34.35 Actually I think a testimony of what God is doing in you lately 00:21:34.38\00:21:38.62 is one of the most powerful stories you can tell. 00:21:38.65\00:21:41.64 I like to use that because people often are looking 00:21:41.67\00:21:45.57 for an answer for something in their lives 00:21:45.60\00:21:47.64 and if you say well, God did this for me, 00:21:47.67\00:21:49.85 they might say well, tell me about your God. 00:21:49.88\00:21:52.49 Now, not everybody will say that 00:21:52.52\00:21:53.93 but there is a chance to build that friendship that way. 00:21:53.96\00:21:56.85 And you can't argue with somebody's experience 00:21:56.88\00:21:59.04 if you talk at the level of concept that's one thing 00:21:59.07\00:22:01.23 but when you share your experience that's true for you. 00:22:01.26\00:22:04.02 Its absolutely true and you know 00:22:04.05\00:22:07.82 what I find is that lot of people will say 00:22:07.85\00:22:11.08 they are open to praying, after you share you experience 00:22:11.11\00:22:13.92 because they have needs in their lives too. 00:22:13.95\00:22:15.99 Exactly. Rick, thanks so much for sharing with us today. 00:22:16.02\00:22:19.21 And viewers at home, God may be calling you to make, 00:22:19.24\00:22:24.31 take that step of contact with some of your neighbors, 00:22:24.34\00:22:27.23 people that you meet everyday. 00:22:27.26\00:22:28.44 It might be in your street, it may be at school, 00:22:28.47\00:22:31.51 it may be work whatever it is take time to pray and say Lord, 00:22:31.54\00:22:36.28 how can I be Your instrument in this situation. 00:22:36.31\00:22:40.14 How can I stop from this keeping to myself 00:22:40.17\00:22:43.00 and build a bridge of love to these people? 00:22:43.03\00:22:45.29 Pray please for the Global Mission Study Centers 00:22:45.32\00:22:47.67 they have a tremendously challenging task 00:22:47.70\00:22:50.87 to find ways, methods, models for us 00:22:50.90\00:22:53.34 to be more effective in our mission 00:22:53.37\00:22:55.62 in sharing with our brothers and sisters around the world. 00:22:55.65\00:22:58.09 Each day after classes, 00:23:31.43\00:23:33.00 students at Lasalgaon Seventh-day Adventist school 00:23:33.03\00:23:36.25 carry out assigned duties around the campus. 00:23:36.28\00:23:39.05 This work program can be found 00:23:55.97\00:23:57.87 at Seventh-day Adventist schools across India. 00:23:57.90\00:24:01.98 Ever since we started the school system 00:24:02.01\00:24:04.69 we introduced the work program. 00:24:04.72\00:24:07.13 And there are students would refuse to do 00:24:07.16\00:24:09.67 certain kinds of manual work. 00:24:09.70\00:24:12.06 Agriculture, yes fine-- I wouldn't mind being 00:24:12.09\00:24:16.66 involved in growing plants, growing vegetables. 00:24:16.69\00:24:20.72 That's a very dignified work 00:24:20.75\00:24:22.69 but to sweep the hostel, clean the toilet, 00:24:22.72\00:24:27.36 do some other kind of work no, no that's not mine. 00:24:27.39\00:24:31.04 That's menial. 00:24:31.07\00:24:32.23 That's not for my status in the community. 00:24:32.26\00:24:36.33 So this has been the division, you know, 00:24:36.36\00:24:40.01 but the Adventist system has somehow 00:24:40.04\00:24:42.94 broken this in our schools. 00:24:42.97\00:24:45.83 Work, any work is God's gift to us. 00:24:45.86\00:24:49.94 God has given us gift of work. 00:24:49.97\00:24:53.77 Take care of the earth. Be stewards of the Earth. 00:24:53.80\00:24:57.79 So that philosophy that whatever you do 00:24:57.82\00:25:00.46 you are a steward of something. 00:25:00.49\00:25:02.75 Whenever a student gets goes through that manual labor 00:25:02.78\00:25:06.60 he becomes more mature, more responsible, 00:25:06.63\00:25:09.54 and ready to take on the world when he leaves the school. 00:25:09.57\00:25:12.23 This focus on strong work ethic has made Lasalgaon School 00:25:14.18\00:25:18.19 an attractive place for parents to send their children. 00:25:18.22\00:25:22.04 The shortcoming of this school is 00:25:22.07\00:25:24.24 we have insufficient classrooms. 00:25:24.27\00:25:27.22 We have very big playground, but we don't have science labs, 00:25:27.25\00:25:32.78 we don't have physics, chemistry and biology separate labs 00:25:32.81\00:25:37.82 which is a essential part of a growing school. 00:25:37.85\00:25:42.51 In the early years of schooling 00:25:42.54\00:25:44.96 if a parent likes to look at value education, 00:25:44.99\00:25:49.47 will my boy, will my girl 00:25:49.50\00:25:51.50 turnout to be the very finest in character? 00:25:51.53\00:25:54.51 When it comes to character 00:25:54.54\00:25:55.96 Adventist education are the best. 00:25:55.99\00:25:58.16 But then when they come to a higher level of learning 00:25:58.19\00:26:01.52 late in high school, people are looking 00:26:01.55\00:26:04.26 for excellence in academic learning. 00:26:04.29\00:26:07.80 Lasalgaon currently has classroom facilities 00:26:11.07\00:26:13.79 for grades one through ten. 00:26:13.82\00:26:15.99 The school needs to build more classrooms 00:26:16.02\00:26:17.92 to be able to accommodate grades 11 and 12. 00:26:17.95\00:26:21.87 If this school opens 11 and 12 00:26:21.90\00:26:24.59 we would like to study here only 00:26:24.62\00:26:26.30 because outside we don't get chance to go for 00:26:26.33\00:26:28.88 church and other activities as we do here. 00:26:28.91\00:26:31.48 Because of your financial support 00:26:33.17\00:26:34.69 of the world budget and mission offerings, 00:26:34.72\00:26:37.02 a new classroom block 00:26:37.05\00:26:38.72 including new physics, chemistry and biology labs, 00:26:38.75\00:26:42.54 will be constructed on the Lasalgaon school campus. 00:26:42.57\00:26:45.95 Your offerings are building more than classrooms. 00:26:45.98\00:26:48.93 They are building a future for these children 00:26:48.96\00:26:51.28 for mission in India. 00:26:51.31\00:26:55.27 Thank you for your support of the mission 00:26:55.30\00:26:57.13 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:26:57.16\00:26:59.65 To find out more please visit adventistmission.org. 00:26:59.68\00:27:03.24 Every three months Adventist Mission produces 00:27:09.89\00:27:12.57 an inspiring collection of video mission stories 00:27:12.60\00:27:16.09 and reports for the Adventist Mission DVD. 00:27:16.12\00:27:19.53 If you live in North America and you'd like to receive 00:27:19.56\00:27:21.87 a free sample copy of the Adventist Mission DVD 00:27:21.90\00:27:25.81 then call or visit our website and ask for a sample 'AM DVD' 00:27:25.84\00:27:31.86 or ask for offer number 303. 00:27:31.89\00:27:34.85 Please remember to clearly state your name, 00:27:34.88\00:27:36.98 your full address and be sure to mention 00:27:37.01\00:27:39.56 the Adventist Mission DVD or offer 303. 00:27:39.59\00:27:44.46 For the office of Adventist Mission, 00:27:44.49\00:27:45.99 I'm Gary Krause and I hope you can join me next time, 00:27:46.02\00:27:48.90 right here on "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:27:48.93\00:27:51.93
