Touching hearts and changing lives 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.92 in Cambodia and North America 00:00:02.95\00:00:05.39 coming up next on "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:05.42\00:00:08.46 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:18.91\00:00:21.42 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:21.45\00:00:24.25 He gave us a mission. 00:00:24.28\00:00:27.12 Jesus said, go. 00:00:27.15\00:00:29.62 "Go unto all the world telling them of His love." 00:00:29.65\00:00:34.52 This is our mission, this is our "Global Mission." 00:00:34.55\00:00:38.69 Hello and welcome 00:00:43.86\00:00:44.98 to Global Mission Snapshots, I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:45.01\00:00:48.36 On today's program we will be visiting Cambodia 00:00:48.39\00:00:51.04 where we will meet a Global Mission Pioneer and his wife 00:00:51.07\00:00:54.37 who relies on his motorbike 00:00:54.40\00:00:56.54 to carry the gospel to remote villages. 00:00:56.57\00:00:59.40 We will also meet a family who stepped out in faith 00:00:59.43\00:01:02.45 and answered God's call to serve in mission. 00:01:02.48\00:01:05.71 Over the years they have touched countless lives in Cambodia. 00:01:05.74\00:01:10.02 We'll also be talking with Joe Watts, 00:01:10.05\00:01:12.01 the Disaster Response Coordinator 00:01:12.04\00:01:14.09 for Adventist Community Services 00:01:14.12\00:01:16.34 here in North America and we will find out 00:01:16.37\00:01:18.78 how they impacting the lives of people touched by disaster. 00:01:18.81\00:01:23.28 But first up, let's look at one of 00:01:23.31\00:01:25.34 Adventist Mission's classic videos, 00:01:25.37\00:01:27.83 which shows what happened when an Adventist pastor 00:01:27.86\00:01:30.89 in British Columbia, Canada 00:01:30.92\00:01:33.71 handed out $100 notes to members in his shocked congregation. 00:01:33.74\00:01:38.87 My name is David Jamison and I'm the lead pastor 00:01:40.17\00:01:42.99 at the Aldergrove Adventist church 00:01:43.02\00:01:45.06 in Aldergrove, British Columbia, Canada. 00:01:45.09\00:01:47.74 And so, we just want to thank you so very much 00:01:47.77\00:01:50.76 for being a part of the Aldergrove Adventist church 00:01:50.79\00:01:53.43 and for being a part of sharing the Christ 00:01:53.46\00:01:56.23 who cares together with people all around us 00:01:56.26\00:01:58.87 in Aldergrove, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey, and beyond. 00:01:58.90\00:02:02.26 The philosophy for this ministry basically comes from 00:02:02.29\00:02:04.90 Ministry of Healing, page 143 Christ method alone. 00:02:04.93\00:02:09.83 Jesus method was to mingle with people, 00:02:09.86\00:02:13.78 to minister to their needs, sympathize with them, 00:02:13.81\00:02:18.56 do whatever He could to help then He made them follow me. 00:02:18.59\00:02:22.26 We often pray the Lord's prayer, 00:02:22.29\00:02:24.85 "Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. 00:02:24.88\00:02:28.07 Thy kingdom come. 00:02:28.10\00:02:30.16 Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." 00:02:30.19\00:02:32.99 We decided that we were going to do that. 00:02:33.02\00:02:35.59 We wanted to bring the kingdom of God down to this earth. 00:02:35.62\00:02:39.02 And so we had the opportunity 00:02:39.05\00:02:43.99 of preaching on the parable of the talents. 00:02:44.02\00:02:46.64 And we decided to give away 50 one hundred dollar bills 00:02:46.67\00:02:50.35 to our congregation with a challenge 00:02:50.38\00:02:52.92 that individuals would come forward, 00:02:52.95\00:02:54.48 receive one of these one hundred dollar bills 00:02:54.51\00:02:57.53 and with in 90 days, they would pray over 00:02:57.56\00:03:00.64 this 100 dollar bill multiplied appropriately 00:03:00.67\00:03:04.38 and doing active kindness for someone outside the walls 00:03:04.41\00:03:07.73 of our congregation anywhere locally or in the world. 00:03:07.76\00:03:13.65 And people responded wonderfully 00:03:13.68\00:03:16.44 to that 50 one hundred dollar bills were handed out 00:03:16.47\00:03:20.11 and now the multiplication has taken place 00:03:20.14\00:03:24.08 and those funds have been multiplied over 75,000 dollars 00:03:24.11\00:03:29.05 and 40 projects that have happened locally and brought. 00:03:29.08\00:03:33.64 When Pastor David got up and challenged everybody 00:03:33.67\00:03:38.59 and we had participated in some of the one's last year 00:03:38.62\00:03:40.77 but haven't taken one on ourselves. 00:03:40.80\00:03:44.22 So we decided to take one on ourselves 00:03:44.25\00:03:47.15 and do it in that manner, had one project. 00:03:47.18\00:03:51.52 It's called the minivan for moms 00:03:51.55\00:03:53.56 and this one member just said you know, I wanted to do this 00:03:53.59\00:03:56.40 and he is got some connections and the-- 00:03:56.43\00:03:59.91 he is got to know one of the single moms from our old church 00:03:59.94\00:04:04.19 and he says, she needs a new van I'm gonna start that ministry. 00:04:04.22\00:04:07.52 And her old car was just found apart, 00:04:07.55\00:04:09.69 it was gonna need a bunch of work, 00:04:09.72\00:04:10.99 more work I think then the car was even worth. 00:04:11.02\00:04:13.86 So, it was just nice to give her a hand up at the right time. 00:04:13.89\00:04:17.48 I got a phone call and they told me 00:04:17.51\00:04:22.17 that they are considering upgrading me to a van 00:04:22.20\00:04:26.16 because I have really rundown old vehicle and I said yes 00:04:26.19\00:04:31.39 and then I went to church and they gave me the keys. 00:04:31.42\00:04:34.06 Well, of course we invited her to church 00:04:34.09\00:04:35.74 the day that we presented her with the key 00:04:35.77\00:04:38.04 and here the next Sabbath, 00:04:38.07\00:04:40.85 she came to Sabbath school we had invited her 00:04:40.88\00:04:43.12 and she said yeah, I'm gonna be there and I talked to her again. 00:04:43.15\00:04:45.73 She said yeah, I'm gonna be there and I'm like okay, 00:04:45.76\00:04:48.28 she was there at 9:30 in the morning 00:04:48.31\00:04:50.98 and we just talked to her again. 00:04:51.01\00:04:53.77 And she is talking about coming again 00:04:53.80\00:04:55.03 to the Sabbath school because she has a little girl. 00:04:55.06\00:04:58.71 Even she told her grandma and grandma's like, 00:04:58.74\00:05:01.90 oh, they are letting you use it for a while type thing, 00:05:01.93\00:05:04.96 she says, no, no they are giving it to me 00:05:04.99\00:05:06.95 and I suppose there was some unbelief there. 00:05:06.98\00:05:11.29 And she just seems quite happy 00:05:11.32\00:05:15.90 that she is in something that respectable. 00:05:15.93\00:05:20.50 I just felt very blessed and it's just unbelievable 00:05:20.53\00:05:24.46 that people can be as kind 00:05:24.49\00:05:26.17 and reach out to others that need help. 00:05:26.20\00:05:29.10 I feel like I should be giving something back 00:05:29.13\00:05:30.65 so we being coming to church and just praying 00:05:30.68\00:05:34.61 and thanking God and thanking everything 00:05:34.64\00:05:37.59 for what they have done. 00:05:37.62\00:05:39.47 By allowing our membership to develop, 00:05:39.50\00:05:41.41 relationships with their neighbors, 00:05:41.44\00:05:43.86 with business owners who want to support acts of kindness 00:05:43.89\00:05:47.46 then they ask you they want to know 00:05:47.49\00:05:49.52 why do you do what you do 00:05:49.55\00:05:51.10 and then we have a chance to share ourfaith. 00:05:51.13\00:05:53.86 And to share what Jesus Christ has done for us. 00:05:53.89\00:05:56.05 People in our society want to see Christ 00:05:56.08\00:05:59.72 before they are willing to listen 00:05:59.75\00:06:01.69 to someone sharing Christ. 00:06:01.72\00:06:04.55 People don't care how much you know 00:06:04.58\00:06:07.49 until they know how much you care. 00:06:07.52\00:06:10.65 I'm delighted that Pastor Joe Watts has joined us today. 00:06:30.71\00:06:34.00 Joe is an associate director 00:06:34.03\00:06:36.35 for Adventist Community Services in North America. 00:06:36.38\00:06:39.29 Welcome, Joe. Thank you. 00:06:39.32\00:06:40.56 Now, what particular areas do you over see? 00:06:40.59\00:06:43.45 The three of the areas, disaster response, 00:06:43.48\00:06:47.41 youth empowered to serve and also, crisis care, 00:06:47.44\00:06:51.13 Now, these are very focused ministries on the community 00:06:51.16\00:06:55.21 and it seems to me that when we look at Adventist Churches 00:06:55.24\00:06:57.68 and many Christian churches in general 00:06:57.71\00:07:00.17 that we can easily get into the mode of focusing 00:07:00.20\00:07:03.13 on our own needs keeping the church members happy. 00:07:03.16\00:07:05.83 You are talking about an outward focused, 00:07:05.86\00:07:08.36 tell us about the philosophy of ACS. 00:07:08.39\00:07:10.92 Well, the philosophy is to get the salt out of the shaker 00:07:10.95\00:07:13.72 and get it out and make a difference in the community. 00:07:13.75\00:07:17.28 And I always felt like that as when I was pasturing 00:07:17.31\00:07:21.05 that if I could get my people focused outward 00:07:21.08\00:07:25.60 that then they wouldn't be fighting 00:07:25.63\00:07:27.47 and focusing on attacking me as a pastor. 00:07:27.50\00:07:30.85 So it worked, it worked. Good strategy. 00:07:30.88\00:07:31.91 Good strategy. Yeah. 00:07:31.94\00:07:33.44 So Joe, give me an example, 00:07:33.47\00:07:35.18 give me a recent example of how Adventist Community Services 00:07:35.21\00:07:39.27 has been able to help people in the community? 00:07:39.30\00:07:41.73 Well, you know, Hurricane Sandy was a big event 00:07:41.76\00:07:44.81 called the super storm and we had four conferences, 00:07:44.84\00:07:48.21 the Greater New York Conference, the Northeastern, 00:07:48.24\00:07:50.79 the New Jersey and Allegheny East 00:07:50.82\00:07:53.11 along with some of the Tsunami conferences even supported them 00:07:53.14\00:07:55.92 because that's what we do we support each other. 00:07:55.95\00:07:58.64 And in disaster and in time of disaster we don't stand alone 00:07:58.67\00:08:02.83 and they did tremendous things 00:08:02.86\00:08:04.58 and then the tragedy in Newtown happened. 00:08:04.61\00:08:07.07 And of course they called us, 00:08:07.10\00:08:09.52 they had over 60,000 teddy bears that were donated. 00:08:09.55\00:08:12.76 People said, well those are the people, 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.03 those kids need teddy bear 00:08:14.06\00:08:15.81 and so there is a emendation of teddy bear and toys 00:08:15.84\00:08:19.78 and I mean like we have got 3,600 boxes of stuffed toys. 00:08:19.81\00:08:26.47 We have got school supply 00:08:26.50\00:08:28.86 of 500 to 600 boxes of school supplies, 00:08:28.89\00:08:33.57 got teachers in there to organize and by age level. 00:08:33.60\00:08:38.27 And it has really helped the town 00:08:38.30\00:08:40.39 so that they don't have to deal with that tragedy 00:08:40.42\00:08:42.67 on the top of the tremendous tragedy 00:08:42.70\00:08:44.90 that happened in their town. 00:08:44.93\00:08:46.59 Now, Joe, what about somebody who might say, 00:08:46.62\00:08:50.06 we have organizations such as a Salvation Army 00:08:50.09\00:08:52.46 that are doing a terrific job. 00:08:52.49\00:08:54.27 The job of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:08:54.30\00:08:55.74 is to preach the gospel. 00:08:55.77\00:08:57.17 Why are we wasting our time doing this one, 00:08:57.20\00:08:58.77 there are so many other organizations. 00:08:58.80\00:09:00.67 Well, you know the thing is selfishly we need it. 00:09:00.70\00:09:05.36 You know to be honest we need to have an outward focus. 00:09:05.39\00:09:10.25 Christ was concerned about the compassion of people. 00:09:10.28\00:09:13.93 He was concerned about what compassion 00:09:13.96\00:09:15.82 we would have for others. 00:09:15.85\00:09:17.13 He knows in our human nature and our human makeup 00:09:17.16\00:09:19.56 we need to think outside ourselves. 00:09:19.59\00:09:21.17 And yes, there are good organizations 00:09:21.20\00:09:23.26 and they are doing a good work 00:09:23.29\00:09:24.77 but Adventist community services has a real notch 00:09:24.80\00:09:27.38 and donations management is one of the areas 00:09:27.41\00:09:30.58 or is the area that we are known 00:09:30.61\00:09:32.09 for completely across all the states, 00:09:32.12\00:09:35.20 all United States of North America 00:09:35.23\00:09:37.36 and so we deal in that donations management 00:09:37.39\00:09:43.58 we do others things too. 00:09:43.61\00:09:44.66 So Joe, what is donations management? 00:09:44.69\00:09:47.05 Okay, donations management-- 00:09:47.08\00:09:49.24 all organization deal in donations 00:09:49.27\00:09:51.70 but donations management is 00:09:51.73\00:09:53.37 taking the undesignated donated goods, 00:09:53.40\00:09:55.93 things that people send after disaster, 00:09:55.96\00:09:58.30 they empty their closets or just whatever 00:09:58.33\00:10:00.99 and taking those things and making organizing them 00:10:01.02\00:10:03.39 making sense and then getting them back to organizations 00:10:03.42\00:10:06.91 that can use them and get them to the people that need help. 00:10:06.94\00:10:10.14 And that's a tremendous asset in the in all 00:10:10.17\00:10:13.96 both taking care of those donated goods that pile up 00:10:13.99\00:10:17.64 and then getting some good things 00:10:17.67\00:10:21.93 to the people that need it. 00:10:21.96\00:10:23.42 Now, Adventist Community Services, how is it funded? 00:10:23.45\00:10:27.22 Funded it by donation, its basically the only way 00:10:27.25\00:10:30.76 that we have to have funding is by the-- 00:10:30.79\00:10:33.53 the North American division members 00:10:33.56\00:10:35.36 who in a outpouring a lot of times 00:10:35.39\00:10:38.01 they are very, very generous 00:10:38.04\00:10:39.28 and we really, really appreciate that. 00:10:39.31\00:10:41.04 Along with some people that are not 00:10:41.07\00:10:42.97 Seventh-day Adventist call our, call AM, call the number 00:10:43.00\00:10:47.18 and give a donation and so it really helps. 00:10:47.21\00:10:51.66 So, you can go to the Adventist Community Services website 00:10:51.69\00:10:56.42 at communityservices.org can you donate there online? 00:10:56.45\00:11:00.59 Yes, you can and it's really kind of fun, 00:11:00.62\00:11:02.73 as moving stuff over into shopping cart 00:11:02.76\00:11:05.04 and it's a great way to great thing. 00:11:05.07\00:11:07.82 All above like a video game. 00:11:07.85\00:11:10.67 Fantastic, now, when you find that in a disaster 00:11:10.70\00:11:14.95 that people are responding 00:11:14.98\00:11:19.71 they know that you are there to help. 00:11:19.74\00:11:22.63 What happens when you don't have enough-- 00:11:22.66\00:11:24.56 enough to help, what do you do? 00:11:24.59\00:11:26.03 You don't have enough goods, you don't have enough food? 00:11:26.06\00:11:29.94 Well, yeah, right exactly. 00:11:29.97\00:11:33.51 One of the things that we have-- we have the VOAD, 00:11:33.54\00:11:36.12 which is Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster 00:11:36.15\00:11:39.29 and that is 52 different organizations nationally 00:11:39.32\00:11:43.18 that have worked together. 00:11:43.21\00:11:44.78 Adventist Community Services 00:11:44.81\00:11:46.03 is charter member of that organization 00:11:46.06\00:11:49.34 and we have partnership that we develop 00:11:49.37\00:11:51.29 that help each other and so that really is-- 00:11:51.32\00:11:54.55 is kind of what happens as we get another organization 00:11:54.58\00:11:56.98 involved a partner helping and we-- you put out needs 00:11:57.01\00:12:00.71 and say hey, we got-- we need this and have 00:12:00.74\00:12:03.56 so that's that really is what takes place. 00:12:03.59\00:12:06.25 So you team together. We team together. 00:12:06.28\00:12:08.33 Wonderful, now, how many Adventist community sites 00:12:08.36\00:12:11.70 are there in North America? 00:12:11.73\00:12:13.56 There is 1250 community services centers 00:12:13.59\00:12:15.76 although I found a lot of churches are doing 00:12:15.79\00:12:18.34 community service activities but not accounting as a centre. 00:12:18.37\00:12:22.16 Right, and so your goal would be for every church to be involved. 00:12:22.19\00:12:26.18 Every church needs to be doing something 00:12:26.21\00:12:28.07 needs to pick something and be doing in their community. 00:12:28.10\00:12:31.15 Now, are you available or any of your team 00:12:31.18\00:12:33.66 to help churches get started? 00:12:33.69\00:12:35.72 Absolutely, and a lot of times we have events 00:12:35.75\00:12:38.16 where we bring in conference of events, 00:12:38.19\00:12:40.03 that usually we try to bring more than one church together. 00:12:40.06\00:12:43.07 How many work--how many work at the head office in this area? 00:12:43.10\00:12:48.58 Elder Kwon and Wynelle and that's it. 00:12:48.61\00:12:52.25 And then we have each of their ministries 00:12:52.28\00:12:54.28 that we Tutoring and Mentoring, Sandra Brown, 00:12:54.31\00:12:57.62 Crisis Care, Steve Wilson, Marty Feldbush 00:12:57.65\00:13:00.62 and the others each ministry has a director that's a volunteer. 00:13:00.65\00:13:05.27 So you could have the guilty of being top heavy. 00:13:05.30\00:13:07.40 Right, exactly. Thanks for joining us, Joe. 00:13:07.43\00:13:09.93 You bet. We appreciate it. 00:13:09.96\00:13:10.99 Viewers are at home, what an important ministry this is, 00:13:11.02\00:13:13.54 Adventist Community Services. 00:13:13.57\00:13:15.60 To find out how you can be involved, how you can help 00:13:15.63\00:13:18.52 go to communityservices.org. 00:13:18.55\00:13:21.38 My guest is Rick Kajiura 00:14:09.46\00:14:11.09 the Communication Director for Adventist Mission 00:14:11.12\00:14:13.71 and he will be taking us to South-East Asia to Cambodia. 00:14:13.74\00:14:17.67 Rick, thanks for joining us. 00:14:17.70\00:14:19.30 It's very good to be here, Gary. 00:14:19.33\00:14:20.97 Now Cambodia, tell us a little bit about the country. 00:14:21.00\00:14:25.47 Cambodia is a country in South-East Asia 00:14:25.50\00:14:27.93 and it was one of those countries that went 00:14:27.96\00:14:29.82 through a very difficult time, during Pope Hart's time. 00:14:29.85\00:14:34.62 You know millions of people were killed there 00:14:34.65\00:14:38.14 and so the country has a real struggle coming back. 00:14:38.17\00:14:41.73 In the most recent visit you see 00:14:41.76\00:14:43.85 that there's been tremendous changes, 00:14:43.88\00:14:46.23 they are much more open to tourism now. 00:14:46.26\00:14:48.64 People are coming in, people's life are improving. 00:14:48.67\00:14:52.60 So Cambodia is a country that's been a very high interest to us 00:14:52.63\00:14:57.71 in Global Mission for many years. 00:14:57.74\00:15:00.08 And we have seen Global Mission Pioneers 00:15:00.11\00:15:01.94 have started many groups not only in rural areas 00:15:01.97\00:15:04.46 but in the capital Phnom Penh. 00:15:04.49\00:15:05.98 In the capital Phnom Penh they had a number of churches 00:15:06.01\00:15:08.55 that have been started and several years ago 00:15:08.58\00:15:10.51 we visited and went out to some of the areas 00:15:10.54\00:15:13.05 around Phnom Penh including some churches that are out in-- 00:15:13.08\00:15:16.55 in houseboats types of situations 00:15:16.58\00:15:20.41 and I remember being in the one where all we had was tarp 00:15:20.44\00:15:24.39 you know blue tarp over their heads 00:15:24.42\00:15:26.63 and a tarp on the ground because the field is muddy underneath 00:15:26.66\00:15:29.49 and we sort of you know tiptoed our way through to that tarp 00:15:29.52\00:15:33.27 and then took out our shoes and sat in the tarp. 00:15:33.30\00:15:35.39 But wasn't great for pictures because it makes 00:15:35.42\00:15:37.72 everybody look very blue with the blue tarp over there. 00:15:37.75\00:15:40.22 Yes, sorry about that. 00:15:40.25\00:15:42.49 But we still have a chance. 00:15:42.52\00:15:44.54 Now, we are gonna out to see and reap 00:15:44.57\00:15:46.22 where there is a Adventist missionary family living there, 00:15:46.25\00:15:50.22 tell us about them the family there. 00:15:50.25\00:15:53.05 Yeah, Tim and Wendy Maddocks 00:15:53.08\00:15:54.94 are Australians who are living there 00:15:54.97\00:15:57.22 and they have been living there for a number of years 00:15:57.25\00:15:59.79 and they are working there with the humanitarian agency 00:15:59.82\00:16:03.15 and they decided, God had a different call for them, 00:16:03.18\00:16:05.76 they wanted to do some other things 00:16:05.79\00:16:07.90 so they gave up their jobs and they moved out into an area 00:16:07.93\00:16:11.88 and they managed to find some land out there 00:16:11.91\00:16:14.01 and they brought this land 00:16:14.04\00:16:16.27 and they have started many things over the years. 00:16:16.30\00:16:18.86 They have started a-- an orphanage and a school 00:16:18.89\00:16:21.99 and they got a beautiful church and over the years 00:16:22.02\00:16:24.96 they have made a tremendous contribution 00:16:24.99\00:16:26.97 to what Global Mission does 00:16:27.00\00:16:28.21 because they had a training centre 00:16:28.24\00:16:29.97 for the Global Mission Pioneers there. 00:16:30.00\00:16:32.86 But what I found fascinating was they showed us pictures 00:16:32.89\00:16:36.10 of when they first went out there 00:16:36.13\00:16:38.07 and the little house they lived 00:16:38.10\00:16:39.28 and it was just a little tiny house 00:16:39.31\00:16:41.72 there were no trees, you look at the campus now, 00:16:41.75\00:16:43.98 there are beautiful trees giving shade. 00:16:44.01\00:16:46.02 When they started there was virtually nothing there 00:16:46.05\00:16:48.61 and they turned this little house 00:16:48.64\00:16:50.81 with no electricity under the hot sun 00:16:50.84\00:16:53.91 and that dedication you know, people who are willing 00:16:53.94\00:16:57.50 to go out there and give their 00:16:57.53\00:17:00.10 turn their lives over to God basically and so Lord you know, 00:17:00.13\00:17:03.12 what do you want us to do and we will do it. 00:17:03.15\00:17:06.78 And the interesting one of the interesting things 00:17:06.81\00:17:08.73 about them is that, they are supported by faith 00:17:08.76\00:17:13.02 so they don't receive a wage 00:17:13.05\00:17:14.29 from the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:17:14.32\00:17:16.19 They help the Adventist church the Adventist church 00:17:16.22\00:17:18.26 is not supporting them financially in any way. 00:17:18.29\00:17:21.34 And that property you said that they bought, 00:17:21.37\00:17:25.58 they bought it many years ago for a few thousand dollars 00:17:25.61\00:17:28.22 today it's valued a several million. 00:17:28.25\00:17:30.49 They donated that to the church. They don't own it. 00:17:30.52\00:17:33.08 Yeah, they as Tim said, when he was talking he said 00:17:33.11\00:17:38.08 you know we started with nothing. 00:17:38.11\00:17:40.03 People have been supporting us over many years 00:17:40.06\00:17:43.23 and we expect when we are done if we don't die here 00:17:43.26\00:17:47.00 and have our grace here in Cambodian soil 00:17:47.03\00:17:49.44 if we leave we will go with just our suitcases. 00:17:49.47\00:17:51.80 Yeah, he said if God calls us to leave here, 00:17:51.83\00:17:54.93 it will have to be with a very loud voice. 00:17:54.96\00:17:57.83 Yeah, you know, they are-- 00:17:57.86\00:17:59.65 I think they are Cambodian through and through now. 00:17:59.68\00:18:02.71 You know, both their boys are living with them 00:18:02.74\00:18:04.49 have gone to school outside but have comeback. 00:18:04.52\00:18:06.36 Their hearts are in Cambodia. 00:18:06.39\00:18:08.48 And we visited their home and you know they built 00:18:08.51\00:18:11.64 most recently they built a television studio there. 00:18:11.67\00:18:14.14 They are starting to prepare programs 00:18:14.17\00:18:15.58 for the Cambodian people, 00:18:15.61\00:18:16.93 health programs things like that. 00:18:16.96\00:18:19.20 We went to their home and it's a wooden building 00:18:19.23\00:18:22.25 that's been there for many, many years 00:18:22.28\00:18:24.47 and the termites have gotten into the wood 00:18:24.50\00:18:27.36 and they are still living there and they are saying 00:18:27.39\00:18:29.53 you know this is our home someday we may have 00:18:29.56\00:18:32.25 to build a new one but right now this is our home. 00:18:32.28\00:18:36.54 Also you mentioned that they live on faith, 00:18:36.57\00:18:39.32 you know that's one thing that really impressed me is, 00:18:39.35\00:18:41.75 is they don't ask to supporters for specific things. 00:18:41.78\00:18:47.17 They say God knows what we need, He will supply our needs. 00:18:47.20\00:18:52.03 And that's a kind of faith that we all should have. 00:18:52.06\00:18:55.65 You know, I was talking with him and he expressed surprise 00:18:55.68\00:18:59.12 that how the church operates and we have budgets, et cetera 00:18:59.15\00:19:02.31 and he says we don't have those sort of things we just-- 00:19:02.34\00:19:04.94 God provides us with what we need. 00:19:04.97\00:19:06.80 You know, I was talking to some, 00:19:06.83\00:19:08.40 some people who were in the finance area of the church 00:19:08.43\00:19:11.25 and we are talking about that very thing and he said you know, 00:19:11.28\00:19:14.91 if the church leadership would operate that way, 00:19:14.94\00:19:19.27 they would be criticized on the one hand 00:19:19.30\00:19:21.16 for not planning and yet they are criticized 00:19:21.19\00:19:24.55 for lack of faith in the other hand. 00:19:24.58\00:19:25.74 So seems like sometimes they can't win. 00:19:25.77\00:19:27.74 Well, the other thing is that's true because we need 00:19:27.77\00:19:30.15 all types of people with different callings 00:19:30.18\00:19:34.13 and Tim and Wendy have certainly showed 00:19:34.16\00:19:37.81 that their priority is other people of Cambodia. 00:19:37.84\00:19:41.14 Yeah, they really have and I mean just watching 00:19:41.17\00:19:44.30 the children as they come into church and Sabbath school 00:19:44.33\00:19:47.80 and how eagerly they come and sit in the front rows 00:19:47.83\00:19:50.78 and listen it's just in tent and then you know leaving. 00:19:50.81\00:19:55.56 You know, go to their Sabbath schools 00:19:55.59\00:19:56.86 they followed them down the path way 00:19:56.89\00:19:59.01 and the enthusiasm with which they sing in that classroom 00:19:59.04\00:20:02.86 is just it warms your heart. 00:20:02.89\00:20:05.19 Now, tell us about the church, the church building. 00:20:05.22\00:20:08.07 The church building it's-- 00:20:08.10\00:20:11.66 there is a beautiful building it got these open windows, 00:20:11.69\00:20:14.71 white top floor and the children just come in 00:20:14.74\00:20:18.56 and sit on the white top floor 00:20:18.59\00:20:20.53 the whole congregation sits on the floors. 00:20:20.56\00:20:22.47 Because it's not a western church building, 00:20:22.50\00:20:24.73 designed specifically for the Cambodian people. 00:20:24.76\00:20:27.01 Right because in the western build 00:20:27.04\00:20:28.64 we have the pews and we may have an organ and a piano. 00:20:28.67\00:20:31.63 And they don't have that they have a lower table upfront 00:20:31.66\00:20:34.15 and they just sit on the floor and you know, 00:20:34.18\00:20:37.65 when you come into that church 00:20:37.68\00:20:39.05 all the shoes are taken off at the front door 00:20:39.08\00:20:41.54 and I always love seeing those shoes 00:20:41.57\00:20:44.23 because you are entering holy ground. 00:20:44.26\00:20:46.15 That's right, they represent people who are inside. 00:20:46.18\00:20:48.34 Yeah. Thanks for joining us, Rick. 00:20:48.37\00:20:50.00 Thank you, it's good to be here. 00:20:50.03\00:20:51.87 And viewers at home, please remember Tim and Wendy 00:20:51.90\00:20:55.03 and their two boys and their ministry there in Cambodia 00:20:55.06\00:20:58.03 a missionary serving all around the world, 00:20:58.06\00:21:00.12 often in very challenging very difficult circumstances. 00:21:00.15\00:21:03.69 My name is Kai Sophal and I work 00:21:13.26\00:21:16.13 as a Global Mission Pioneer in the country of Cambodia. 00:21:16.16\00:21:20.04 Together with my wife, we travel to small villages 00:21:20.07\00:21:23.17 on the outskirts of the capital city of Phnom Penh, 00:21:23.20\00:21:26.35 sharing the truths of the Gospel with everyone we meet. 00:21:26.38\00:21:29.97 Our little bike has lots of kilometers on it 00:21:30.00\00:21:32.31 and we sometimes will visit villages 00:21:32.34\00:21:34.20 that are more than 30 kilometers away. 00:21:34.23\00:21:36.62 The hardest part is when you spend time 00:21:46.05\00:21:47.94 sharing the Gospel with people and they don't choose 00:21:47.97\00:21:50.42 to believe what you have shared with them. 00:21:50.45\00:21:53.06 Our greatest desires for them to believe in Jesus 00:21:53.09\00:21:56.17 and when they don't it can be difficult to take. 00:21:56.20\00:22:00.26 One of the ways to reach out is go speak one to one with people, 00:22:00.29\00:22:04.30 share the gospel with them that way. 00:22:04.33\00:22:06.91 Another way is to use the new beginning DVD program 00:22:06.94\00:22:09.57 to preach the gospel, another is to pass out tracks 00:22:09.60\00:22:12.90 and explain to people what track is talking about. 00:22:12.93\00:22:16.40 The track talks about two roads of life, 00:22:16.43\00:22:19.15 the road to life, the road to death. 00:22:19.18\00:22:22.17 It tells about the life of Jesus, 00:22:22.20\00:22:24.48 the reason why He came, His death and resurrection 00:22:24.51\00:22:28.50 going to heaven and coming back again. 00:22:28.53\00:22:32.28 When I go and visit villages and share the gospel 00:22:32.31\00:22:34.71 I find that people don't reject the message right away 00:22:34.74\00:22:38.31 but it is only a handful that fully accept 00:22:38.34\00:22:40.54 and receive the message into their hearts. 00:22:40.57\00:22:43.50 Most of society feels that religion is for old people, 00:22:43.53\00:22:47.31 they want to work and make money when they are young. 00:22:47.34\00:22:49.80 They don't have time for God. 00:22:49.83\00:22:52.19 But the ones that find God are true to Him 00:22:52.22\00:22:54.77 and their lives are really changed. 00:22:54.80\00:22:57.26 You can see it on their faces when they read the Bible 00:22:57.29\00:22:59.80 and really understand what it says. 00:22:59.83\00:23:02.81 When they pray, they have a peaceful look 00:23:02.84\00:23:04.84 that reflects the love that they have for God. 00:23:04.87\00:23:07.79 This is what brings me joy.
