Bibles for children, long distance Bible studies 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.46 and a report on the state of mission today, 00:00:04.49\00:00:07.42 all coming up next on "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:07.45\00:00:10.85 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:22.34\00:00:24.02 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:24.05\00:00:27.50 He gave us a mission. 00:00:27.53\00:00:30.31 Jesus said, go. 00:00:30.34\00:00:32.71 "Go unto all the world, telling them of His love." 00:00:32.74\00:00:37.68 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:37.71\00:00:41.86 Hello, and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:46.93\00:00:49.19 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:49.22\00:00:50.64 For more than 70 years the Voice of Prophecy 00:00:50.67\00:00:53.41 has been offering free Bible studies 00:00:53.44\00:00:55.86 to people all around the world. 00:00:55.89\00:00:58.21 Today, we will be talking with Pastor Kurt Johnson, 00:00:58.24\00:01:01.06 who heads up Bible Correspondent Schools for Voice of Prophecy 00:01:01.09\00:01:05.21 and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:05.24\00:01:07.48 We will also talk with Pastor Delbert Pearman, 00:01:07.51\00:01:10.36 planning director for Adventist Mission, 00:01:10.39\00:01:12.62 about the state of mission today 00:01:12.65\00:01:15.08 and the challenges we still face. 00:01:15.11\00:01:17.34 And we will find out more about mission to the cities 00:01:17.37\00:01:20.73 and just how the Adventist church 00:01:20.76\00:01:22.77 is addressing that growing challenge. 00:01:22.80\00:01:25.65 But first up, let's see a project to help children 00:01:25.68\00:01:28.76 in the South Pacific have their own Bibles. 00:01:28.79\00:01:32.05 Do you like listening to Bible stories? 00:01:39.55\00:01:41.97 The children here on the islands of the South Pacific 00:01:42.00\00:01:44.40 love to listen to Bible stories. 00:01:44.43\00:01:46.73 Lately, the stories have been even more interesting 00:01:46.76\00:01:49.18 because the teachers have Bible story picture rolls 00:01:49.21\00:01:52.31 with pictures to go along with the stories they share. 00:01:52.34\00:01:55.60 A few years ago children and their parents around the world 00:02:00.55\00:02:03.61 helped collect a special offering 00:02:03.64\00:02:05.56 that helped buy these picture rolls 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.15 for the children's teachers. 00:02:07.18\00:02:08.89 They use them all the time and the children love them. 00:02:08.92\00:02:12.46 The teachers love them too. 00:02:12.49\00:02:14.36 But did you know that even though 00:02:14.39\00:02:16.08 they love hearing the stories, 00:02:16.11\00:02:17.74 most of these children don't own a Bible 00:02:17.77\00:02:20.83 so they can read the stories for themselves. 00:02:20.86\00:02:23.62 In some of the outer villages of the South Pacific, 00:02:23.65\00:02:26.43 if you see ten children only one will have a Bible. 00:02:26.46\00:02:31.16 When grown up's have gone into some of these villages 00:02:31.19\00:02:33.47 to help teach parents how to study the Bible 00:02:33.50\00:02:35.44 with their children, they found out 00:02:35.47\00:02:37.83 that the parents didn't have Bibles either. 00:02:37.86\00:02:40.64 Not only is it important for the children 00:02:40.67\00:02:42.38 to be able to read the stories for themselves, 00:02:42.41\00:02:45.37 many of them will be able to read the Bible to their parents 00:02:45.40\00:02:48.11 who have never learned to read. 00:02:48.14\00:02:50.25 Many children in the more remote villages 00:02:50.28\00:02:52.48 are the first in their families to go to school 00:02:52.51\00:02:54.99 to learn to read and write. 00:02:55.02\00:02:57.18 So, next time you hear a Bible story or pick up your Bible 00:02:57.21\00:03:00.85 remember the children who are hearing 00:03:00.88\00:03:02.97 and seeing the Bible stories in the South Pacific. 00:03:03.00\00:03:06.06 Thank you, for helping others learn about Jesus. 00:03:06.09\00:03:10.07 My guest is Pastor Kurt Johnson, 00:03:17.90\00:03:20.08 who is the Director of the Bible School for Voice of Prophecy 00:03:20.11\00:03:23.11 and for the North-American Adventist Media Centre 00:03:23.14\00:03:26.08 and he also cares for 00:03:26.11\00:03:27.14 Bible Correspondence School around the world. 00:03:27.17\00:03:29.20 Thanks for joining us, Kurt. 00:03:29.23\00:03:30.67 That's a pretty long title, like a busy man. 00:03:30.70\00:03:33.84 Tell us what is a Bible Correspondence School? 00:03:33.87\00:03:36.05 Well, a Bible Correspondence School is basically 00:03:36.08\00:03:40.30 around the world they are in-- located in union offices 00:03:40.33\00:03:43.49 and in many places and media centers 00:03:43.52\00:03:46.02 and we receive Bible lessons requests 00:03:46.05\00:03:49.56 that come to people in communities 00:03:49.59\00:03:51.03 and we send them to them by mail. 00:03:51.06\00:03:53.37 We're also on the study with them on the internet. 00:03:53.40\00:03:55.61 So the correspondence is mail and internet. 00:03:55.64\00:03:59.18 So these Bible lessons are like a question and answer format 00:03:59.21\00:04:03.04 that actually people physically filling and send back in? 00:04:03.07\00:04:05.70 That's correct and so you-- what normally happens is 00:04:05.73\00:04:08.88 if you are a student I would send you probably 00:04:08.91\00:04:11.25 five, six lessons at a time and there is a response sheet. 00:04:11.28\00:04:14.72 So you look up the Bible text, you study it, 00:04:14.75\00:04:16.81 you fill it out, you mail that back in to us, 00:04:16.84\00:04:19.52 we correct it and send you your next lessons 00:04:19.55\00:04:21.71 and at the end you get a diploma. 00:04:21.74\00:04:23.72 And we do the same on the internet 00:04:23.75\00:04:25.16 except, obviously it comes via email or the web 00:04:25.19\00:04:29.50 rather than by a physical mail. 00:04:29.53\00:04:31.73 What a great idea. How did it start? 00:04:31.76\00:04:33.70 Well, you got to go clear back 1942. 00:04:33.73\00:04:37.77 H.M.S. Richards Sr. was speaker, 00:04:37.80\00:04:40.15 director for the Voice of Prophecy 00:04:40.18\00:04:41.99 and a man by the name of Fordyce Detamore 00:04:42.02\00:04:44.39 who was an evangelist joined the team as the announcer. 00:04:44.42\00:04:47.71 And Fordyce had that idea 00:04:47.74\00:04:49.36 of the correspondence school by mail. 00:04:49.39\00:04:51.64 And so back in 1942, in fact the day was February 1, 1942. 00:04:51.67\00:04:57.01 They began what they call the Bible School of the Air. 00:04:57.04\00:04:59.82 And its an idea that caught on like wildfire. Oh, sure. 00:04:59.85\00:05:02.84 In fact, within the first probably about seven, 00:05:02.87\00:05:07.37 eight months it was like 60,000 requests for Bible lessons. 00:05:07.40\00:05:10.82 Wow. Yeah. 00:05:10.85\00:05:12.13 Now, tell me about how many people 00:05:12.16\00:05:14.63 have graduated over the years? 00:05:14.66\00:05:16.60 Well, in North America we had over 12 million students. 00:05:16.63\00:05:22.10 In fact, back in 2010 we had our one millionth graduate. 00:05:22.13\00:05:26.85 Her name was Victoria Fulbright, 00:05:26.88\00:05:28.94 she was a college student. 00:05:28.97\00:05:30.49 And she said, she doesn't even remember 00:05:30.52\00:05:33.21 how the Bible lesson-- she never even requested it. 00:05:33.24\00:05:35.68 She is not sure how it even ended up in her mailbox, 00:05:35.71\00:05:38.31 except one day she went out there and there it was. 00:05:38.34\00:05:41.97 And at that time in her life, she was growing through 00:05:42.00\00:05:44.22 a very difficult period, she was struggling with lot of issues. 00:05:44.25\00:05:48.49 And the very first lesson was "Can I Believe in God? 00:05:48.52\00:05:52.14 And she picked that lesson up, 00:05:52.17\00:05:53.75 she read it and spoke to our heart. 00:05:53.78\00:05:55.62 It was a message that convicted her 00:05:55.65\00:05:57.77 and so filled out the answer sheet and mailed it back in, 00:05:57.80\00:06:00.83 just like we talked about and got her next lessons. 00:06:00.86\00:06:04.72 And one Sabbath morning she said 00:06:04.75\00:06:08.32 she wasn't quite done with her lessons yet, 00:06:08.35\00:06:10.91 been studying three or four months, 00:06:10.94\00:06:13.08 she got up that day and she was just convicted, 00:06:13.11\00:06:15.22 she needed to go to church and she knew that 00:06:15.25\00:06:19.03 through the correspondence that it was Seventh-day Adventist 00:06:19.06\00:06:21.73 that she was receiving these lessons from. 00:06:21.76\00:06:24.14 And she went to her computer, 00:06:24.17\00:06:25.75 looked up the address of the local church where she lived 00:06:25.78\00:06:28.50 in North Carolina and went to church. 00:06:28.53\00:06:32.83 When she walked in she said 00:06:32.86\00:06:33.97 the church members are very warm. 00:06:34.00\00:06:36.67 The moment she sat down another lady came 00:06:36.70\00:06:39.08 and sat down beside her, introduced herself to her 00:06:39.11\00:06:42.80 and stayed with her the entire time. 00:06:42.83\00:06:44.96 And the pastor, sermon spoke to her heart, 00:06:44.99\00:06:47.39 she kept coming to church and the sprit spoke, 00:06:47.42\00:06:50.93 she made that decision and she was baptized. 00:06:50.96\00:06:54.42 Well, blessings upon that church 00:06:54.45\00:06:56.36 because so often you hear negative stories. 00:06:56.39\00:06:58.28 That's so good to hear a positive one. 00:06:58.31\00:06:59.85 Yeah, I was excited to think you know, 00:06:59.88\00:07:01.50 when you think of the combination there was 00:07:01.53\00:07:04.29 you know, the greeters were warm, 00:07:04.32\00:07:06.58 someone sat down beside her 00:07:06.61\00:07:09.02 and then the pastor ministered to her 00:07:09.05\00:07:11.09 and then the Bible lessons. 00:07:11.12\00:07:12.91 Because you can only do so much from the Bible school 00:07:12.94\00:07:17.44 it takes people on the ground to connect with that 00:07:17.47\00:07:20.09 to bring them into fellowship, that's wonderful. 00:07:20.12\00:07:22.62 I can remember as a kid, 00:07:22.65\00:07:23.97 I did one or two courses just for the fun of it. 00:07:24.00\00:07:27.41 And how many different types of lessons do you have? 00:07:27.44\00:07:30.77 Oh, well, we have in English, we have in North America 00:07:30.80\00:07:35.12 we have about seven different sets that we offer. 00:07:35.15\00:07:38.80 The main ones that we use are the discover guides 00:07:38.83\00:07:41.65 which are full doctrinal course. 00:07:41.68\00:07:44.18 We have kid zone for junior age 00:07:44.21\00:07:46.81 and the we have set on Daniel and Revelation on prophecy. 00:07:46.84\00:07:49.88 Now, we have Shema Yisrael 00:07:49.91\00:07:51.99 which is also for people of Jewish background 00:07:52.02\00:07:56.33 who have an interest in Christianity. 00:07:56.36\00:07:59.10 We have Native New Day which is for Native Americans. 00:07:59.13\00:08:04.12 So these are just some of the other courses, 00:08:04.15\00:08:05.67 some on the life of Jesus. 00:08:05.70\00:08:07.45 We have on our website Bible lessons available 00:08:07.48\00:08:10.98 in about 47 different languages. 00:08:11.01\00:08:13.34 Wonderful and the website is? 00:08:13.37\00:08:15.90 It's BibleStudies.com. 00:08:15.93\00:08:17.49 That's easy to remember BibleStudies.com. 00:08:17.52\00:08:20.36 Now, differ regions of the board church 00:08:20.39\00:08:22.61 would have their own lessons as well in addition? 00:08:22.64\00:08:24.81 That's correct. 00:08:24.84\00:08:26.85 There about a 130 countries that have Bible-- 00:08:26.88\00:08:30.24 the Correspondent Bible Schools around the world. 00:08:30.27\00:08:33.68 And so, each of them within their region, 00:08:33.71\00:08:37.74 each school then would have you know, 00:08:37.77\00:08:39.51 the other lessons in their languages. 00:08:39.54\00:08:41.25 They decide which ones would be the most culturally sensitive 00:08:41.28\00:08:45.02 to their needs and they translate. 00:08:45.05\00:08:47.62 They also make a-- so they are more indigenous, 00:08:47.65\00:08:49.93 you know for the local population. 00:08:49.96\00:08:52.08 Wonderful, share with us another story of someone 00:08:52.11\00:08:55.72 who's life has been touched. 00:08:55.75\00:08:57.78 You know, about just a few weeks ago 00:08:57.81\00:09:00.61 I came back from a World Bible School meeting 00:09:00.64\00:09:03.53 that we have every five years. 00:09:03.56\00:09:04.95 In fact, you've attended that one 00:09:04.98\00:09:06.01 in South Africa five years ago. 00:09:06.04\00:09:08.53 And we get together and we talk about 00:09:08.56\00:09:10.60 strategies of working with radio and television ministries 00:09:10.63\00:09:14.33 and as far as the follow up and from India 00:09:14.36\00:09:17.07 one of the stories that's just were shared. 00:09:17.10\00:09:19.66 They just opened a new language school Marathi, a language. 00:09:19.69\00:09:23.79 And what took place there, there was a gentlemen 00:09:23.82\00:09:26.64 he's about 25 years old a salesmen 00:09:26.67\00:09:29.81 and by chance he was listening to the radio 00:09:29.84\00:09:32.35 and he came across Adventist World Radio 00:09:32.38\00:09:34.72 and he said that the music and the speaking 00:09:34.75\00:09:38.91 just touched his heart, it spoke to him. 00:09:38.94\00:09:41.19 And as he listened to that music 00:09:41.22\00:09:43.99 and that sermon they also offered free Bible guides. 00:09:44.02\00:09:47.33 He sent for the lessons, he studied them 00:09:47.36\00:09:49.69 and went and began to visit other churches in cities 00:09:49.72\00:09:53.56 trying to find out more about the message. 00:09:53.59\00:09:56.12 And God began to speak to his heart 00:09:56.15\00:09:58.16 and he made a decision and was baptized. Fantastic. 00:09:58.19\00:10:01.24 Kurt, thanks for joining us today. 00:10:01.27\00:10:03.53 Our viewers at home, biblelessons.com. 00:10:03.56\00:10:05.99 Wonderful stories of lives being changed 00:10:06.02\00:10:08.58 through Bible correspondence schools. 00:10:08.61\00:10:10.80 My guest is Pastor Delbert Pearman, 00:10:59.14\00:11:01.85 who is the Planning Director for the office of Adventist Mission. 00:11:01.88\00:11:05.16 One of my colleagues. 00:11:05.19\00:11:06.22 Welcome, Delbert. Thank you. 00:11:06.25\00:11:07.82 Now, Delbert, you and your family have severed 00:11:07.85\00:11:10.00 as missionaries in many parts of the world 00:11:10.03\00:11:12.42 tell us a little about where you have served. 00:11:12.45\00:11:15.06 Well, before I was married right after graduating from Oakwood, 00:11:15.09\00:11:19.31 I went to Malawi as an accountant 00:11:19.34\00:11:22.29 at a leprosy project run by Malamulo Hospital 00:11:22.32\00:11:26.20 and from there I received an apatite for mission service 00:11:26.23\00:11:32.15 and after that I always said I wanted to be a missionary. 00:11:32.18\00:11:35.15 Well, the opportunity to get back into mission service 00:11:35.18\00:11:38.52 came after 12 years of marriage where I went to Sri Lanka 00:11:38.55\00:11:44.02 as a treasurer for the Sri Lanka mission. 00:11:44.05\00:11:47.66 And had a wonderful experience from there 00:11:47.69\00:11:50.40 after almost four years to the Middle East there 00:11:50.43\00:11:54.96 and worked in Lebanon, Jordan 00:11:54.99\00:11:59.38 and occasionally traveled through Syria. 00:11:59.41\00:12:02.00 And then after that I got a call to Ethiopia 00:12:02.03\00:12:05.42 and served as a mission service, served a mission service. 00:12:05.45\00:12:09.91 After that I got a call to the United States 00:12:09.94\00:12:12.34 as a conference treasure and then to the General Conference 00:12:12.37\00:12:15.25 so I had opportunity of working 00:12:15.28\00:12:17.74 among many different people groups 00:12:17.77\00:12:21.10 and got a fascination a personal interest in World missions 00:12:21.13\00:12:26.23 and that's where my mission journey has taken me. 00:12:26.26\00:12:28.60 So, you've served in Africa, Asia, the Middle East 00:12:28.63\00:12:31.90 and now in your current position, 00:12:31.93\00:12:33.59 you are looking at the over view of mission 00:12:33.62\00:12:36.09 and you see lots of Global Mission projects coming in. 00:12:36.12\00:12:39.29 When you look at the state of mission today 00:12:39.32\00:12:41.59 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:12:41.62\00:12:42.95 what are some of the bright sports, 00:12:42.98\00:12:44.51 where do we see mission growing strongly? 00:12:44.54\00:12:47.91 Well, we do see Mission going strong 00:12:47.94\00:12:50.78 in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Africa, 00:12:50.81\00:12:54.56 South America, Inter-America and these countries 00:12:54.59\00:12:57.84 were traditionally missionaries were sent 00:12:57.87\00:13:00.58 but now they're very strong there. 00:13:00.61\00:13:02.87 I see opportunities for us now in the urban centers, 00:13:02.90\00:13:08.22 tremendous opportunities are waiting for us 00:13:08.25\00:13:10.72 in those areas there. 00:13:10.75\00:13:12.82 But we are very strong and in the Isles of the Pacific, 00:13:12.85\00:13:15.38 the Islands of the Atlantic, the Caribbean 00:13:15.41\00:13:18.14 and through out the islands we're very strong in those areas 00:13:18.17\00:13:21.33 so missions are going well there. 00:13:21.36\00:13:23.89 So, you mentioned one of the-- I like the way you put it 00:13:23.92\00:13:27.02 the opportunities, you know, 00:13:27.05\00:13:29.49 depending on how you look at it, the challenges of urban mission. 00:13:29.52\00:13:33.01 What are some of the other areas that we see as-- 00:13:33.04\00:13:38.18 areas that we need to address more strongly? 00:13:38.21\00:13:40.77 Well, in addition to reaching the cities 00:13:40.80\00:13:44.18 approximately two-thirds of the world's populations 00:13:44.21\00:13:47.63 are non-Christian and so we have an obligation 00:13:47.66\00:13:51.28 to take the gospel to every nation, kindred, 00:13:51.31\00:13:53.91 tongue, and people that includes non-Christians. 00:13:53.94\00:13:56.45 So we do have an obligation to take the gospel to them 00:13:56.48\00:14:00.43 and there are opportunities that are opening up 00:14:00.46\00:14:03.24 because of Global Mission focusing on these people groups 00:14:03.27\00:14:07.88 and these religious segments that we are able to reach them. 00:14:07.91\00:14:12.68 Now, Global Mission as we all know 00:14:12.71\00:14:16.10 focuses on church planting in new areas. 00:14:16.13\00:14:18.98 You get to meet some Global Mission Pioneers. 00:14:19.01\00:14:21.17 Can you tell me about the work of pioneers? 00:14:21.20\00:14:24.88 Yes, pioneers are people, from within the community 00:14:24.91\00:14:29.63 who in turn dedicate their time to reach, 00:14:29.66\00:14:33.57 un-reached people within their people group. 00:14:33.60\00:14:36.59 And there are lots of opportunities available. 00:14:36.62\00:14:40.58 I can think of one. 00:14:40.61\00:14:42.23 I just recently traveled to one country 00:14:42.26\00:14:45.26 where there was a pastor of another church. 00:14:45.29\00:14:49.44 He attended one of our Adventists schools 00:14:49.47\00:14:52.67 because he wanted to prefect his abilities in agriculture. 00:14:52.70\00:14:57.91 Many of these pastors and all the churches 00:14:57.94\00:14:59.92 are self supporting pastors. 00:14:59.95\00:15:01.83 And while he was there he became attracted 00:15:01.86\00:15:04.50 to the Advent message. 00:15:04.53\00:15:06.25 Was converted baptized gave up his agricultural pursuits 00:15:06.28\00:15:10.61 and returned back to his village as a Global Mission pioneer 00:15:10.64\00:15:14.40 and he has raised up a church. 00:15:14.43\00:15:16.22 And so we see opportunities for people to work 00:15:16.25\00:15:19.25 among their own to carry the gospel to them. 00:15:19.28\00:15:23.63 Now, projects from different parts of the world 00:15:23.66\00:15:27.54 come across your desk regularly. 00:15:27.57\00:15:30.72 How many projects does Global Mission support? 00:15:30.75\00:15:33.60 Well, in the past when you look at going back 00:15:33.63\00:15:37.34 may be ten or more years 00:15:37.37\00:15:38.46 we have supported over 14,000 projects. 00:15:38.49\00:15:42.53 Today, we have 3,500 active Global Mission pioneers 00:15:42.56\00:15:48.53 actively at work in 106 countries around the world 00:15:48.56\00:15:51.83 and these are countries which are traditionally challenging 00:15:51.86\00:15:55.96 to Christianity but yet there they are carrying the banner 00:15:55.99\00:15:59.52 of Christ soon return to their own people. 00:15:59.55\00:16:03.67 Now, these Global Mission Pioneers, 00:16:03.70\00:16:05.77 how are they supported financially? 00:16:05.80\00:16:08.38 Well, we have a sharing program 00:16:08.41\00:16:10.80 where the divisions would contribute a certain amount, 00:16:10.83\00:16:15.00 the General Conference contributes a certain amount 00:16:15.03\00:16:17.47 and the unions and many times 00:16:17.50\00:16:18.82 the local conferences will contribute. 00:16:18.85\00:16:20.67 So we have a shared program. 00:16:20.70\00:16:22.54 Okay, so--so I'm going to interrupt you there 00:16:22.57\00:16:24.27 interpret this for any viewers who are familiar with the world, 00:16:24.30\00:16:28.06 the Seventh-day Adventist World Church 00:16:28.09\00:16:29.82 is divided up into regions, 00:16:29.85\00:16:32.23 and so we have 13 regions actually 14 regions now 00:16:32.26\00:16:36.07 and then underneath that there are some further organization. 00:16:36.10\00:16:39.60 So each level is contributing to the project. 00:16:39.63\00:16:41.67 Yes, to the project. 00:16:41.70\00:16:42.88 Yeah, it is makes it a shared vision 00:16:42.91\00:16:44.97 and also there is ownership, so that when the church 00:16:45.00\00:16:49.50 a new church as established already that local conference 00:16:49.53\00:16:53.04 is ready to embrace that is part of 00:16:53.07\00:16:54.62 the sisterhood of churches' local conferences. 00:16:54.65\00:16:57.64 And then we can release those projects to that organization 00:16:57.67\00:17:03.64 and those funds can be used 00:17:03.67\00:17:05.19 to establish new projects in new areas. 00:17:05.22\00:17:08.42 So it's a ongoing our program. 00:17:08.45\00:17:11.48 So there is a lot to be done, Delbert. 00:17:11.51\00:17:13.92 Yes, yes, we still have quite a challenge 00:17:13.95\00:17:16.79 ahead of us as I mentioned. 00:17:16.82\00:17:19.03 Over three quarters of the population of the world 00:17:19.06\00:17:21.74 are non-Christian and so this our burden 00:17:21.77\00:17:24.34 to carry the gospel to them. 00:17:24.37\00:17:26.31 Delbert, thank you so much for joining us today. 00:17:26.34\00:17:28.65 Yes, thank you. 00:17:28.68\00:17:30.26 Pastor Pearman has given us 00:17:30.29\00:17:32.26 an overview of the challenge that remains. 00:17:32.29\00:17:35.06 We are thankful for what God is doing 00:17:35.09\00:17:36.68 in so many parts of the world. 00:17:36.71\00:17:38.57 We rejoice to hear of large baptisms 00:17:38.60\00:17:40.83 but there are so many areas that still we need 00:17:40.86\00:17:44.18 to under the blessing of the Holy Spirit 00:17:44.21\00:17:46.55 be faithful in going to share the wonderful love of Jesus. 00:17:46.58\00:17:50.53 Please continue to remember in your prayers 00:17:50.56\00:17:54.25 Global Mission Pioneers, 00:17:54.28\00:17:55.56 missionaries the board range of mission work of the church. 00:17:55.59\00:17:59.09 What do you mean you don't have time? 00:18:01.23\00:18:02.79 She's your child too. 00:18:02.82\00:18:04.50 You know, this really isn't fair to me. 00:18:04.53\00:18:06.77 Please don't leave me as the single parent here. 00:18:06.80\00:18:10.10 No don't hang up, don't hang up. 00:18:10.13\00:18:11.95 No, no, no, don't hang up. 00:18:11.98\00:18:13.88 Don't hang up. 00:18:13.91\00:18:15.82 Taxi. 00:18:17.51\00:18:18.59 Hey mom, it's me. 00:18:24.33\00:18:25.60 I was hoping that we could talk. 00:18:25.63\00:18:27.34 I'm just in a bind right now and I'm feeling so helpless 00:18:27.37\00:18:30.21 I don't know what to do. 00:18:30.24\00:18:32.58 Please call me as soon as you get this 00:18:32.61\00:18:34.72 because I really need to talk to you. 00:18:34.75\00:18:36.86 About four years ago the world reached a very interesting point 00:18:54.48\00:18:59.16 where it crossed the point of having 00:18:59.19\00:19:01.49 50% of the world's population 00:19:01.52\00:19:04.29 living in these large metropolitan areas of the world. 00:19:04.32\00:19:09.49 The Seventh-day Adventist Church has a very unique 00:19:09.52\00:19:12.47 opportunity of following the Spirit of Prophecy council 00:19:12.50\00:19:16.63 and Biblical principals in reaching 00:19:16.66\00:19:19.14 the people in the cities. 00:19:19.17\00:19:21.59 Ellen White has given tremendous council 00:19:21.62\00:19:24.61 through the inspiration of God 00:19:24.64\00:19:25.98 about how to reach people in the cities 00:19:26.01\00:19:27.90 with sustainable programs, 00:19:27.93\00:19:30.28 programs that will definitely try 00:19:30.31\00:19:33.08 and reach the hearts and the needs of people. 00:19:33.11\00:19:35.99 Our great challenge is to put that together 00:19:36.02\00:19:38.93 in a comprehensive urban evangelism approach 00:19:38.96\00:19:42.68 and we're hoping by God's grace that you will be involved in it. 00:19:42.71\00:19:45.91 That every division, every union, 00:19:45.94\00:19:48.97 every conference and mission, 00:19:49.00\00:19:50.32 every church and church member 00:19:50.35\00:19:52.40 will not only pray for the people in the cities 00:19:52.43\00:19:55.88 but that they will definitely gear themselves towards trying 00:19:55.91\00:19:59.59 to reach those very precious souls 00:19:59.62\00:20:02.90 who simply don't know about Jesus. 00:20:02.93\00:20:05.19 Jesus loves the cities and the reason He does is 00:20:12.00\00:20:15.77 because that's where people live and Jesus loves people. 00:20:15.80\00:20:20.09 In Matthew 9:35 the Bible says, "And Jesus went about 00:20:20.12\00:20:23.48 all the cities and villages preaching in their synagogues, 00:20:23.51\00:20:27.94 teaching and healing the diseases of the people." 00:20:27.97\00:20:31.19 Jesus had a comprehensive plan of physical, mental, 00:20:31.22\00:20:34.58 spiritual, and emotional wholeness for the cities. 00:20:34.61\00:20:37.46 The Seventh-day Adventist church is launching 00:20:37.49\00:20:39.96 a comprehensive plan to reach people in the cities. 00:20:39.99\00:20:43.50 It will begin in New York City, 2013, 00:20:43.53\00:20:48.20 a series of evangelistic meetings 00:20:48.23\00:20:50.07 but before that time each local church 00:20:50.10\00:20:52.40 becoming actively involved, 00:20:52.43\00:20:54.34 pastors and lay people uniting together 00:20:54.37\00:20:58.00 to reach the cities for Jesus Christ. 00:20:58.03\00:21:01.32 Divisions around the world are sending representatives 00:21:01.35\00:21:04.19 to New York City so that they too can participate 00:21:04.22\00:21:08.54 in this comprehensive plan. 00:21:08.57\00:21:10.00 Then, each of the 13 divisions 00:21:10.03\00:21:12.38 will have chosen a particular city. 00:21:12.41\00:21:16.65 Union representatives will come and participate 00:21:16.68\00:21:18.76 in these division meetings then the unions 00:21:18.79\00:21:21.19 and conferences will choose cities. 00:21:21.22\00:21:23.04 In all over 630 cities will be targeted, 00:21:23.07\00:21:27.94 the major cities in the world. 00:21:27.97\00:21:30.06 All of heaven is rejoicing and the Father, Son, 00:21:30.09\00:21:34.09 and the Holy Spirit I am convinced 00:21:34.12\00:21:36.72 are anointing this project with their grace as we reach out 00:21:36.75\00:21:42.54 and touch people in the cities. 00:21:42.57\00:21:45.23 As Seventh-day Adventist leaders 00:21:45.26\00:21:47.00 and Seventh-day Adventist members, 00:21:47.03\00:21:48.40 we often like to focus on the impossibility 00:21:48.43\00:21:52.03 of taking mission to cities and yet we know 00:21:52.06\00:21:56.34 that in our history the Lord has provided us with miracles 00:21:56.37\00:22:01.88 and examples of how this has been possible. 00:22:01.91\00:22:03.90 I think of South America, Inter-America, 00:22:03.93\00:22:07.51 the southern half of the continent of Africa, 00:22:07.54\00:22:10.29 Papua New Guinea, and many places in Asia 00:22:10.32\00:22:12.26 like Korea, the Philippines. 00:22:12.29\00:22:14.35 And you can look at cities, the city of Sao Paulo 00:22:14.38\00:22:17.02 with more than 1,000 churches in that city, 00:22:17.05\00:22:19.67 the city of Lima with hundreds of churches in that city. 00:22:19.70\00:22:23.27 Mexico City we've made advances there 00:22:23.30\00:22:26.03 but what about the 10/40 Window 00:22:26.06\00:22:28.54 where we find multiple millions of people 00:22:28.57\00:22:31.23 living in cities where the predominant religion 00:22:31.26\00:22:34.01 comes from something other than a Christian background. 00:22:34.04\00:22:37.36 Yes, the Lord has given us examples of we can do this. 00:22:37.39\00:22:41.96 I think of Phnom Penh, 00:22:41.99\00:22:43.59 more than 50 worshiping congregations in that city. 00:22:43.62\00:22:48.16 Bangkok, for years we had five worshiping churches, 00:22:48.19\00:22:51.32 today have 13 congregations that are worshiping in Bangkok. 00:22:51.35\00:22:56.21 Jakarta, located in the most populous Muslim country 00:22:56.24\00:23:00.20 in the world more than 100 00:23:00.23\00:23:02.53 Seventh-day Adventist churches in that city. 00:23:02.56\00:23:04.79 India, we have placed churches in many places there. 00:23:04.82\00:23:08.13 You know the Lord has given us plenty of evidence 00:23:08.16\00:23:13.57 that it's possible to go to the cities. 00:23:13.60\00:23:15.34 We can do this but its going to be through 00:23:15.37\00:23:18.03 the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:23:18.06\00:23:21.01 The gospels tell us that when Jesus looked at the crowds, 00:23:21.04\00:23:24.31 He looked at them with compassion. 00:23:24.34\00:23:26.27 And that describes the stance, 00:23:26.30\00:23:28.40 the attitude with which we need to look at the cities. 00:23:28.43\00:23:31.43 Do we simply care for people? 00:23:31.46\00:23:33.92 Do we care for the fact that most people live now in cities 00:23:33.95\00:23:37.81 and most of our church resources are going outside cities? 00:23:37.84\00:23:41.91 Jesus had a particular method for reaching people. 00:23:41.94\00:23:45.41 He looked with compassion 00:23:45.44\00:23:47.07 and then He cared for them holistically. 00:23:47.10\00:23:49.67 Ellen White summarizes it beautifully when she said 00:23:49.70\00:23:52.29 that Christ's method alone will bring true success. 00:23:52.32\00:23:56.18 And she says that first of all 00:23:56.21\00:23:58.02 Jesus mingled with people as one who desired their good. 00:23:58.05\00:24:02.40 Secondly, He showed compassion, He cared for people. 00:24:02.43\00:24:06.30 Thirdly, He ministered to their needs. 00:24:06.33\00:24:09.24 Fourthly, He won confidence 00:24:09.27\00:24:11.83 and then and only then He bid them follow me. 00:24:11.86\00:24:16.12 And today if we are going to reach the cities 00:24:16.15\00:24:18.54 we need to follow Jesus' example. 00:24:18.57\00:24:20.71 There's no rocket science, there's no secret methods. 00:24:20.74\00:24:23.24 It's that holistic ministry that Jesus himself showed. 00:24:23.27\00:24:27.34 He cared for people in a way that touched them physically 00:24:27.37\00:24:30.24 and socially but He also taught them 00:24:30.27\00:24:32.69 about the kingdom that was coming. 00:24:32.72\00:24:34.69 So today, we can't just care for people's physical needs 00:24:34.72\00:24:38.18 and ignore telling them about Jesus. 00:24:38.21\00:24:39.80 That's going to short-circuit the message. 00:24:39.83\00:24:42.79 But we also can't come in and just preach at people 00:24:42.82\00:24:45.13 without caring for them physically. 00:24:45.16\00:24:47.21 It's that holistic ministry that Jesus calls us to 00:24:47.24\00:24:50.51 and it is the only way that will bring true success. 00:24:50.54\00:24:54.89 As pastors we must in our mission 00:24:54.92\00:24:57.57 seek to reach the cities. 00:24:57.60\00:24:59.29 That's a calling that we have. Jesus loved the cities. 00:24:59.32\00:25:01.31 He sent Jonah to get Nineveh and He's calling each of us 00:25:01.34\00:25:04.77 to be involved somehow in reaching over 50% 00:25:04.80\00:25:07.08 of His people that are in the cities. 00:25:07.11\00:25:09.12 And we're not doing as well as we should in many places. 00:25:09.15\00:25:11.78 So I would like to challenge you today to think about 00:25:11.81\00:25:14.17 how and pray about how God can I help, 00:25:14.20\00:25:17.34 how can my church help perhaps reaching the cities? 00:25:17.37\00:25:20.31 Matthew 24:14 says "This gospel of the kingdom 00:25:20.34\00:25:23.05 shall be preached in all the world 00:25:23.08\00:25:24.83 and then shall the end come." 00:25:24.86\00:25:26.85 The fact is as a pastor I didn't expect 00:25:26.88\00:25:29.19 to be here with grey hair. 00:25:29.22\00:25:30.63 I wanted to see Jesus come long ago 00:25:30.66\00:25:32.52 but we're not going home until we reach 00:25:32.55\00:25:34.02 every one of those children He loves 00:25:34.05\00:25:35.44 with the 3 angel's messages and with the opportunity 00:25:35.47\00:25:37.61 to know Jesus and experience a living walk with Him. 00:25:37.64\00:25:40.70 Will you pray about it? 00:25:40.73\00:25:41.96 Will you see what you can do to reach the masses 00:25:41.99\00:25:44.11 of the cities in the days to come? 00:25:44.14\00:25:46.20 As Jesus crested that hill 00:25:46.23\00:25:49.49 and looked at the city of Jerusalem, 00:25:49.52\00:25:53.41 the Bible says, He wept. 00:25:53.44\00:25:57.19 I want to implore each of you to weep 00:25:57.22\00:26:01.21 for the people of the cities of this world. 00:26:01.24\00:26:04.80 And do more than weep. 00:26:04.83\00:26:06.43 Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the power 00:26:06.46\00:26:08.82 to join in comprehensive urban evangelism 00:26:08.85\00:26:12.45 to reach these precious souls of these many cities. 00:26:12.48\00:26:17.08 God bless you in this very important endeavor 00:26:17.11\00:26:20.69 as we look forward to Jesus soon coming 00:26:20.72\00:26:23.09 and where we can meet with people from the country, 00:26:23.12\00:26:26.44 from the rural areas, and the big cities 00:26:26.47\00:26:29.32 and be with our Lord in the New Jerusalem, the Holy City. 00:26:29.35\00:26:34.23 Today, we have a very special offer on 00:26:43.83\00:26:46.57 "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:26:46.60\00:26:48.36 we suspects that our views love mission 00:26:48.39\00:26:50.72 and the different people's cultures 00:26:50.75\00:26:52.40 and places around the world. 00:26:52.43\00:26:54.39 And so if you live in North America and also enjoy eating, 00:26:54.42\00:26:58.81 we would like to send you a free copy of a cookbook 00:26:58.84\00:27:01.57 entitled "A Taste of Travel." 00:27:01.60\00:27:04.35 This beautifully illustrated book features soups 00:27:04.38\00:27:07.16 and stews for more than 130 countries. 00:27:07.19\00:27:11.02 It includes recipes such as sweet mango soup from Jamaica, 00:27:11.05\00:27:15.55 tomato basil soup from Latvia, 00:27:15.58\00:27:18.13 and sweet potato stew from Guyana. 00:27:18.16\00:27:21.10 A Taste of Travel, was written 00:27:21.13\00:27:22.58 by Adventist Mission's Marketing Director, Nancy Kyte. 00:27:22.61\00:27:25.73 So simply call our toll free number at 1-800-648-5824 00:27:25.76\00:27:31.79 or visit our website and ask for A Taste of Travel 00:27:31.82\00:27:35.26 or just mention the soup cookbook. 00:27:35.29\00:27:38.36 This book is completely free although if you also include 00:27:38.39\00:27:41.15 a donation would be happy to receive it. 00:27:41.18\00:27:43.45 But hurry because supplies are limited. 00:27:43.48\00:27:46.20 Don't forget to clearly state your name and address 00:27:46.23\00:27:49.47 and we'll send you a copy while supplies last. 00:27:49.50\00:27:52.95 Well, I hope you've enjoyed our program today 00:27:52.98\00:27:55.33 and I hope it's inspired you to pray for the people 00:27:55.36\00:27:58.66 and places you've seen. 00:27:58.69\00:28:00.72 And a special thank you to those who visit our website 00:28:00.75\00:28:03.33 and support global mission projects. 00:28:03.36\00:28:06.31 Thank you for helping reach the un-reach with hope. 00:28:06.34\00:28:09.73 Until next time I'm Gary Krause, god bless. 00:28:09.76\00:28:13.05
