From Kenya to the United States, from Italy to France mission 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.40 stories and mission challenges around the globe 00:00:04.43\00:00:06.89 coming up on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:06.92\00:00:10.32 Just before He went up to heaven 00:00:20.44\00:00:23.18 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:23.21\00:00:26.27 He gave us a mission. 00:00:26.30\00:00:29.00 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:29.03\00:00:33.77 telling them of His love." 00:00:33.80\00:00:36.34 This is our mission. 00:00:36.37\00:00:38.40 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:38.43\00:00:40.84 Hello I am Gary Krause 00:00:45.55\00:00:46.94 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:46.97\00:00:49.25 Today, we will be looking at the power of prayer 00:00:49.28\00:00:51.81 and the power of people who care. 00:00:51.84\00:00:54.21 A couple of years ago experts estimated 00:00:54.24\00:00:56.62 there had been two and half million 00:00:56.65\00:00:58.58 new AIDS infected people in that one year. 00:00:58.61\00:01:01.82 Despite medical progress HIV and AIDS 00:01:01.85\00:01:04.80 still adversely affect millions of families. 00:01:04.83\00:01:08.59 Today we will visit some Adventists missionaries 00:01:08.62\00:01:10.61 working to educate people about the disease. 00:01:10.64\00:01:13.75 We will also talk with Richard Elofer, 00:01:13.78\00:01:15.35 director of The World Jewish Adventist Friendship Center, 00:01:15.38\00:01:19.02 one of the global missions study centers. 00:01:19.05\00:01:21.48 We'll also take a historical look 00:01:21.51\00:01:23.31 at some early Adventist missionaries with David Trim, 00:01:23.34\00:01:26.36 the director of Archives, Statistics and Research 00:01:26.39\00:01:29.94 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:29.97\00:01:31.84 But first let's travel to Italy and a church 00:01:31.87\00:01:34.66 using prayer to help their church grow. 00:01:34.69\00:01:38.46 Milan, Italy one of the most secularized regions of Europe, 00:01:39.78\00:01:44.99 home to amazing architecture, music, fancy shops, 00:01:45.02\00:01:48.91 fashion and everything that can make your empty heart feel full. 00:01:48.94\00:01:53.35 Though at least that's what the people 00:01:53.38\00:01:54.84 who live here would like to think. 00:01:54.87\00:01:57.03 Italy is also home to one in sixty million people 00:01:57.06\00:02:00.69 and there is only one Adventist for every 6,900 people. 00:02:00.72\00:02:05.41 The Adventist church has had a difficult time growing here. 00:02:05.44\00:02:09.94 We have a very secularize society and it affects 00:02:09.97\00:02:15.70 the society and the church also. 00:02:15.73\00:02:19.81 So it's not easy to come to people 00:02:19.84\00:02:24.68 that think they don't need God, don't need religion. 00:02:24.71\00:02:29.84 So we must find strategies to come around us, 00:02:29.87\00:02:34.78 hold the biases and prejudiced 00:02:34.81\00:02:37.57 that people has-- have in their minds. 00:02:37.60\00:02:40.99 So this is our challenge, hence we see 00:02:41.02\00:02:44.48 that some results are appearing here in them. 00:02:44.51\00:02:48.14 (Speaking in foreign language) 00:02:53.53\00:02:56.97 Outside of Milan is the area of Bergamo. 00:03:03.33\00:03:07.45 Here a small Seventh-day Adventist meets each Sabbath. 00:03:07.48\00:03:12.21 The work small can be used to describe the building 00:03:12.24\00:03:14.95 that they need in, not the size of the congregation. 00:03:14.98\00:03:18.51 Several years ago the church was small and had no growth, 00:03:18.54\00:03:22.61 church leaders decided to try establishing small groups 00:03:22.64\00:03:26.14 that would use prayer as their out reach to the community. 00:03:26.17\00:03:29.89 The members organized into small groups that would meet 00:03:29.92\00:03:32.94 several times a week in member's homes. 00:03:32.97\00:03:36.01 They would study the Bible for a deeper understanding 00:03:36.04\00:03:38.61 of Jesus and his love for them. 00:03:38.64\00:03:41.14 At the same time they pray that God would bring people 00:03:41.17\00:03:44.17 to them so they could share their faith. 00:03:44.20\00:03:47.29 For several months this continued and then people 00:03:47.32\00:03:50.37 from outside the church started attending the small groups. 00:03:50.40\00:03:53.97 These new arrivals were coworkers and mutual friends 00:03:54.00\00:03:57.73 who wanted to find a deeper meaning in their lives. 00:03:57.76\00:04:00.97 Slowly the small church started to grow. 00:04:01.00\00:04:04.74 Sabbath school became a time of deep 00:04:04.77\00:04:07.13 spiritual study and prayer. 00:04:07.16\00:04:09.70 The small groups would meet in their own Sabbath school groups 00:04:09.73\00:04:12.81 and then pour over the scriptures together. 00:04:12.84\00:04:15.90 Then the last 15 minutes of Sabbath school were dedicated 00:04:15.93\00:04:19.83 to praying in small groups. 00:04:19.86\00:04:21.96 These groups would pray for God to bring 00:04:21.99\00:04:24.13 new people to them, people who were also searching 00:04:24.16\00:04:27.75 for the truth in Jesus. 00:04:27.78\00:04:30.36 Soon the church had more than doubled the size 00:04:30.39\00:04:33.07 and had quickly out grown its small building. 00:04:33.10\00:04:36.97 Today there are 11 Lay leaders at the church 00:04:37.00\00:04:40.00 and each one is in charge of a small group. 00:04:40.03\00:04:42.80 There is even talk of starting a church plant 00:04:42.83\00:04:45.51 in another near by community to elevate 00:04:45.54\00:04:48.15 the crowded church each Sabbath. 00:04:48.18\00:04:50.23 God has truly answered the prayers 00:04:50.26\00:04:52.66 of the Bergamo church. 00:04:52.69\00:04:55.16 (Speaking in foreign language) 00:04:55.19\00:04:57.79 In the mission of the church the gospel 00:04:57.82\00:05:00.07 has not completed its mission until in the church 00:05:00.10\00:05:03.70 between the members and its totality has accepted 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.59 the character of Christ in such a way 00:05:06.62\00:05:09.30 we will meet one time per week 00:05:09.33\00:05:11.54 after we can meet two times per week. 00:05:11.57\00:05:13.75 So times people meet three, four, five times per week. 00:05:13.78\00:05:16.71 We eat together, we enjoy together, 00:05:16.74\00:05:18.89 we sing together and we also weep together 00:05:18.92\00:05:21.08 and in such a way the Lord will put people in his church. 00:05:21.11\00:05:27.91 Your prayerful support at the mission offering 00:05:27.94\00:05:30.22 helps provide resources to small churches like Bergamo 00:05:30.25\00:05:34.30 as they strive to reflect the character of Christ 00:05:34.33\00:05:37.85 and bring the members of their community to Jesus. 00:05:37.88\00:05:41.96 Thank you, for supporting the mission 00:05:41.99\00:05:44.63 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:05:44.66\00:05:47.44 One of the many activities and initiatives 00:05:49.78\00:05:52.35 of the office of Adventist Mission 00:05:52.38\00:05:54.31 are the Global Mission's Study Centers. 00:05:54.34\00:05:56.83 One of these study centers 00:05:56.86\00:05:58.61 is the World Jewish Adventist Friendship Center. 00:05:58.64\00:06:02.12 This is a centre that has been based in Jerusalem 00:06:02.15\00:06:05.47 and recently moved to Paris, France. 00:06:05.50\00:06:08.44 And I am delighted to welcome 00:06:08.47\00:06:10.15 Dr. Richard Elofer, to the program. 00:06:10.18\00:06:12.72 Richard, you have been the director 00:06:12.75\00:06:14.47 of this centre for many years now? 00:06:14.50\00:06:17.11 Yeah, about 12 years. Twelve years. 00:06:17.14\00:06:20.96 The study centers are set up to help us build 00:06:21.00\00:06:24.16 better bridges of understanding with people 00:06:24.19\00:06:26.26 from different faith tradition. 00:06:26.29\00:06:28.42 Now where does your knowledge of Judaism come from? 00:06:28.45\00:06:31.25 Oh, my knowledge comes from my education, 00:06:31.28\00:06:35.12 because I am a Jew. 00:06:35.15\00:06:36.95 I was born as a Jew and then I was raised as Jew. 00:06:36.98\00:06:41.74 I did my bar mitzvah course, normal education of a Jew. 00:06:41.77\00:06:47.20 That's why I have a good knowledge 00:06:47.23\00:06:49.59 of Judaism and what is to be a Jew. 00:06:49.62\00:06:53.49 Yes, now tell me a little bit about the centre. 00:06:53.52\00:06:55.94 What is the sort of things that you do? 00:06:55.97\00:06:57.99 What are your goals? 00:06:58.02\00:07:00.86 Our goal is to raise an understanding 00:07:00.89\00:07:06.76 inside of the church and outside of the church 00:07:06.79\00:07:09.92 and good relationships between Jews and Adventists. 00:07:09.95\00:07:15.41 That is our first goal and that's why we try to make 00:07:15.44\00:07:20.07 the church known among the Jews in order to have them 00:07:20.10\00:07:25.42 to--to have a good understanding 00:07:25.45\00:07:28.61 of who we are and what we believe. 00:07:28.64\00:07:31.25 Outline some of the areas that we share 00:07:31.28\00:07:34.57 in common with our Jewish neighbors. 00:07:34.60\00:07:36.82 Oh, we have many of them. 00:07:36.85\00:07:38.65 We have of course a Sabbath because 00:07:38.68\00:07:40.63 we are the Seventh-day Adventist, 00:07:40.66\00:07:42.59 seventh day means a Sabbath. 00:07:42.62\00:07:44.91 And we have also all our lifestyle 00:07:44.94\00:07:48.07 and our health principles and many things like that. 00:07:48.10\00:07:53.78 In fact which share the same Bible, 00:07:53.81\00:07:56.02 the same God, the same Messiah 00:07:56.05\00:07:58.44 we have so many things in common with the Jewish people. 00:07:58.47\00:08:02.29 Now as Adventist we believe very strongly 00:08:02.32\00:08:05.32 and we promote religious freedom and so there are times 00:08:05.35\00:08:09.78 when a Jewish person will decide, 00:08:09.81\00:08:13.22 I want to fellowship with Adventist. 00:08:13.25\00:08:15.30 How do we make this more comfortable for then? 00:08:15.33\00:08:19.12 I understand it we have a number 00:08:19.15\00:08:21.03 of different congregations describe those for me. 00:08:21.06\00:08:24.56 Yeah, you know, we have among us some Jews 00:08:24.59\00:08:28.29 who have accepted that Jesus which is called in Hebrew, 00:08:28.32\00:08:33.02 Yeshua as a Messiah. 00:08:33.05\00:08:36.04 And because they are coming to us we welcome them, 00:08:36.07\00:08:39.89 we accepts them. 00:08:39.92\00:08:41.38 But we are very careful not to hurt them and to shock them 00:08:41.41\00:08:48.89 and that's why we have decided to worship 00:08:48.92\00:08:52.52 in some of our congregation in the Jewish style. 00:08:52.55\00:08:57.74 And that's why we have Hebrew Adventist congregation 00:08:57.77\00:09:02.48 or some other says Jewish Adventist congregation 00:09:02.51\00:09:05.62 some other says Jewish Adventist synagogue. 00:09:05.65\00:09:09.41 Because we want to have the keepers that they lead 00:09:09.44\00:09:12.62 to seeing them to pray in Hebrew exactly like 00:09:12.65\00:09:16.29 we can do in the synagogue. 00:09:16.32\00:09:18.83 On Sabbath morning we opens Torah scroll like 00:09:18.86\00:09:22.75 in the synagogue and we have the Kiddush. 00:09:22.78\00:09:25.52 We have all the stuff of Jewish synagogue in our congregations. 00:09:25.55\00:09:32.69 Now I had the privilege of worshiping 00:09:32.72\00:09:34.82 in some of these congregations 00:09:34.85\00:09:36.30 and not coming from the Jewish background 00:09:36.33\00:09:38.49 and it is still very meaningful for me. 00:09:38.52\00:09:41.03 And do you find that you have many other Adventist 00:09:41.06\00:09:45.37 who come and say this is a meaningful way to worship. 00:09:45.40\00:09:47.73 Yeah, in fact not only Adventists 00:09:47.76\00:09:49.75 but also some other traditions from other denominations 00:09:49.78\00:09:53.89 because in fact that our roots are in Hebrew Bible 00:09:53.92\00:09:58.29 and we have common roots with the Jewish people. 00:09:58.32\00:10:02.18 And many Christians are very interesting to discover 00:10:02.21\00:10:06.13 the Jewish or Hebrew roots of their faith. 00:10:06.16\00:10:11.27 And that's why they are coming to our congregation 00:10:11.30\00:10:14.93 to our worship and they are very happy to read the Bible 00:10:14.96\00:10:18.68 and to understand the Bible with a new eyes. 00:10:18.71\00:10:21.97 With a Jewish point of view 00:10:22.00\00:10:24.47 and that is very interesting for them. 00:10:24.50\00:10:26.73 That's why we attract in our congregation 00:10:26.76\00:10:29.78 Jews, Messianic, Christians and Adventist. 00:10:29.81\00:10:35.01 A broad range. 00:10:35.04\00:10:36.63 Now Richard tell me about the recent incentive 00:10:36.66\00:10:39.97 for a radio station that you were involved in. 00:10:40.00\00:10:42.43 Yeah, since I am now in Paris 00:10:42.46\00:10:45.17 and if I came to Paris to France it because France 00:10:45.20\00:10:49.54 is third Jewish country in the world 00:10:49.57\00:10:52.61 after America and Israel and I try to think a little bit 00:10:52.64\00:10:59.01 what can I do in Paris in France to make this relationship 00:10:59.04\00:11:03.42 and to build understanding between Jews and Adventist. 00:11:03.45\00:11:07.61 And they found radio is quite a good way 00:11:07.64\00:11:12.14 because 20, 30 years ago we had to ask government 00:11:12.17\00:11:17.93 for authorization to have channel on FM et cetera 00:11:17.96\00:11:22.89 but today it's completely free. 00:11:22.92\00:11:25.06 With internet we can do what ever we want. 00:11:25.09\00:11:28.71 And then I decided to open a web radio. 00:11:28.74\00:11:32.56 This web radio is called Shema-Israel-Radio.net 00:11:32.59\00:11:40.42 or dot com is coming to also and in this radio 00:11:40.45\00:11:47.43 we have right now beautiful music, 00:11:47.46\00:11:51.30 Messianic music and Jewish music 00:11:51.33\00:11:55.17 and also the reading of the Bible in Hebrew. 00:11:55.20\00:11:59.03 Oh, Lovely And we are planning 00:11:59.06\00:12:01.24 to record very soon some talk program 00:12:01.27\00:12:04.77 because Jews are very interesting by talk. 00:12:04.80\00:12:08.23 We can see everywhere Jews 00:12:08.26\00:12:10.93 are very educated and they are listening 00:12:10.96\00:12:13.13 talk radio everywhere. 00:12:13.16\00:12:15.44 Fantastic. Now, Richard, just quickly 00:12:15.47\00:12:17.25 for more information on this centre 00:12:17.28\00:12:20.19 how can-- how can our viewers find them? 00:12:20.22\00:12:23.05 How can-- They get more information. 00:12:23.08\00:12:24.88 What's the website? 00:12:24.91\00:12:25.94 Okay, the website if JewishAdventist.org 00:12:25.97\00:12:29.98 Oh that's easy. JewishAdentist.org 00:12:30.01\00:12:32.39 Yeah. Thank you, 00:12:32.42\00:12:33.45 so much for joining us today, Richard. 00:12:33.48\00:12:35.22 Thank you, very much for inviting me. 00:12:35.25\00:12:37.12 Viewers at home please do remember Pastor Elofer 00:12:37.15\00:12:40.59 and his ministry in your prayers. 00:12:40.62\00:12:43.12 There are more than 50 Jewish Adventist congregations 00:12:43.15\00:12:46.36 spread in various parts of the world 00:12:46.39\00:12:48.21 today worshiping every Sabbath. 00:12:48.24\00:12:51.22 These are congregations that are open, 00:12:51.25\00:12:53.42 that are accommodating, that are friendly, 00:12:53.45\00:12:55.88 that are contextualized to be attractive 00:12:55.91\00:12:58.39 to our Jewish brothers and sisters. 00:12:58.42\00:13:00.67 And please, look for opportunities 00:13:00.70\00:13:02.76 in your neighborhoods, in your workplace to open up 00:13:02.79\00:13:06.17 your arms of friendship to our Jewish friends with whom we have 00:13:06.20\00:13:10.57 so much in common and may God richly bless us 00:13:10.60\00:13:13.82 as we try to be open everybody who comes from 00:13:13.85\00:13:17.33 a different faith tradition and needs to know 00:13:17.36\00:13:19.79 that we are their friends and that we love them. 00:13:19.82\00:13:22.14 My guest is Dr. David Trim, a historian 00:14:10.11\00:14:12.81 who is the director of Archives and Statistics, 00:14:12.84\00:14:15.79 and Research at the Seventh-day Adventists world headquarters. 00:14:15.82\00:14:19.54 David, thanks for joining us. 00:14:19.57\00:14:20.73 It's my pleasure, Gary. 00:14:20.76\00:14:21.79 What we are going to talk about 00:14:21.82\00:14:23.41 some of the Adventists pioneers who have been very significant 00:14:23.44\00:14:27.52 for the mission of the church, who we are going to look at. 00:14:27.55\00:14:30.57 I think we can talk about 00:14:30.60\00:14:31.63 John Collas and William Spicer Gary. 00:14:31.66\00:14:34.12 Wonderful names that I am familiar with, 00:14:34.15\00:14:36.05 tell me about Elder Collas. 00:14:36.08\00:14:37.54 Collas is interesting. 00:14:37.57\00:14:39.89 He has a personal connection since with us because 00:14:39.92\00:14:42.84 with out Collas the church in Australia 00:14:42.87\00:14:44.88 where we both grew up would not have 00:14:44.91\00:14:46.42 developed in the same way. 00:14:46.45\00:14:47.69 I have a lot to thank him for. 00:14:47.72\00:14:49.00 In deed, you know, Collas doesn't spend 00:14:49.03\00:14:52.22 all of his life as a missionary but he does have 00:14:52.25\00:14:55.31 some significant periods in mission service. 00:14:55.34\00:14:57.95 He was born just after Christmas in the 1845. 00:14:57.98\00:15:02.46 He was originally a Baptist but he became 00:15:02.49\00:15:04.34 a Seventh-day Adventist when he was just 23 and in 1868 00:15:04.37\00:15:09.04 he became the Chaplin or what was then called 00:15:09.07\00:15:10.57 the Western Health Reform Institute that's become 00:15:10.60\00:15:13.30 Battle Creek Sanitarium that is the first 00:15:13.33\00:15:16.37 Adventist Healthcare Institution and he became its Chaplin 00:15:16.40\00:15:19.91 when it was only two years old. 00:15:19.94\00:15:22.03 So he plays a very key role in forming 00:15:22.06\00:15:24.13 the Adventist health work. 00:15:24.16\00:15:25.88 He then later in the 1870s and 80s works as a minister 00:15:25.91\00:15:29.33 and evangelist right across the United States. 00:15:29.36\00:15:31.54 But a key day comes in 1985 when he goes with Elder S. N. Haskell 00:15:31.57\00:15:36.64 and others as the first Adventists missionaries 00:15:36.67\00:15:39.47 to Australia and of course that is when the church 00:15:39.50\00:15:42.62 in Australia gets, gets founded. 00:15:42.65\00:15:44.26 As with many countries in the world, Gary, 00:15:44.29\00:15:47.62 Adventists had been there before the first missionaries 00:15:47.65\00:15:50.19 came because that read Adventists literature 00:15:50.22\00:15:53.61 but these are the first party 00:15:53.64\00:15:55.62 of the first Adventists missionaries to go to Australia. 00:15:55.65\00:15:57.91 And so in a sense everything that happens 00:15:57.94\00:16:00.32 with the church in Australia which is still 00:16:00.35\00:16:02.15 sort of a powerhouse or Adventism 00:16:02.18\00:16:03.77 comes from their work. 00:16:03.80\00:16:05.50 And Collas was particularly important because 00:16:05.53\00:16:08.10 he conducted evangelistic campaigns in Melbourne 00:16:08.13\00:16:10.85 and Adelaide and some other Australian cities 00:16:10.88\00:16:12.95 which were tremendously successful. 00:16:12.98\00:16:15.15 He won large numbers of converts including 00:16:15.18\00:16:17.89 a few from the upper classes which is, 00:16:17.92\00:16:19.84 you know, Adventists don't always reach. 00:16:19.87\00:16:22.31 And that was important because their tithes and offerings 00:16:22.34\00:16:25.54 help to sustain the church. 00:16:25.57\00:16:27.49 And so really without Collas and his evangelistic series 00:16:27.52\00:16:33.61 the church in Australia just wouldn't have taken off. 00:16:33.64\00:16:36.42 Now, when he went to Australia 00:16:36.45\00:16:37.76 who did you say he went with? 00:16:37.79\00:16:39.19 S. N. Haskell, Steven Haskell. 00:16:39.22\00:16:40.94 Steven Haskell. And Haskell himself, 00:16:40.97\00:16:42.66 you know, he would be a good subject 00:16:42.69\00:16:44.03 for another time perhaps. Oh, yeah, he was particularly 00:16:44.06\00:16:46.13 close with Ellen White of course. 00:16:46.16\00:16:47.33 In deed. In deed. So these--these men 00:16:47.36\00:16:50.72 went with their families, got on a boat, 00:16:50.75\00:16:52.61 went all the way to Australia and then 00:16:52.64\00:16:54.30 that wasn't that easy back then. 00:16:54.33\00:16:55.79 No, in deed it's a journey of weeks 00:16:55.82\00:16:58.31 to go across the pacific not like today. 00:16:58.34\00:17:00.88 I mean it seems long enough now flying across the pacific 00:17:00.91\00:17:04.30 but much longer than and, you know, quite a alien society. 00:17:04.33\00:17:08.90 Australia and United States were similar in some ways 00:17:08.93\00:17:11.64 both being frontier societies, but of course Australia 00:17:11.67\00:17:15.01 was--had been founded by Britain as a colony 00:17:15.04\00:17:17.80 and so it would have been alien to them in many ways 00:17:17.83\00:17:21.78 but they are willing to do it they were enthusiastic. 00:17:21.81\00:17:24.80 And Collas as I said plays this key role as an evangelist. 00:17:24.83\00:17:28.00 But also he establishes the first Adventists magazine, 00:17:28.03\00:17:31.66 the first church paper in Australia the Bible Echo. 00:17:31.69\00:17:34.94 Which also it help to meet the church together 00:17:34.97\00:17:37.64 and won more people, won new conducts as well. 00:17:37.67\00:17:41.80 And he remained in Australia for two years 00:17:41.83\00:17:44.46 then he went back to California 00:17:44.49\00:17:45.77 because he had some health problems 00:17:45.80\00:17:48.43 but he went to Australia again 00:17:48.46\00:17:49.87 and was there for another 3 years from 1893 to 1896 00:17:49.90\00:17:54.44 before and of course that was the stage 00:17:54.47\00:17:56.49 when Ellen White was also there. 00:17:56.52\00:17:59.05 But he returns to the States in 1896 and then he, 00:17:59.08\00:18:02.51 his key role there after for a while was in religious liberty 00:18:02.54\00:18:06.30 and he actually appealed before a US senate committee 00:18:06.33\00:18:10.49 to testify about a proposed Sunday law. 00:18:10.52\00:18:12.88 Its often remembered that A.T. Jones 00:18:12.91\00:18:14.72 was the great hero of religious liberty but Collas 00:18:14.75\00:18:17.72 as involved as Jones was and he helped to stop 00:18:17.75\00:18:22.33 those, those moved towards 00:18:22.36\00:18:24.04 the national Sunday law in 1890s. 00:18:24.07\00:18:26.89 Now, tell us about the second man Elder Spicer, 00:18:26.92\00:18:30.40 very significant for Adventist mission. 00:18:30.43\00:18:32.48 Spicer could not be more significant actually, 00:18:32.51\00:18:35.53 you know, Gary. 00:18:35.56\00:18:37.30 Spicer's demand who creates 00:18:37.33\00:18:40.42 Adventists mission I would say. 00:18:40.45\00:18:42.86 He himself served as a, as a missionary. 00:18:42.89\00:18:44.74 He went to England when he was just 22. 00:18:44.77\00:18:47.33 Help set up the work there, came back to America 00:18:47.36\00:18:50.62 to be the foreign mission security 00:18:50.65\00:18:52.50 of the General Conference. 00:18:52.53\00:18:54.09 And because of his work, while he was there that 00:18:54.12\00:18:56.55 was one of the reason they were able to buy 00:18:56.58\00:18:58.24 the land on which they established Salus Mission 00:18:58.27\00:19:01.29 which is today Salus University. 00:19:01.32\00:19:03.59 And then he went to India. 00:19:03.62\00:19:05.47 He went to India in 1898 and for three years 00:19:05.50\00:19:08.56 he was the only ordained minister 00:19:08.59\00:19:11.15 in the whole of southern Asia. 00:19:11.18\00:19:13.00 He founded the Adventist Periodical Day, 00:19:13.03\00:19:15.24 he really set the work on a, a good foundation. 00:19:15.27\00:19:18.42 Then he goes back to America 00:19:18.45\00:19:20.43 to be the Sectary of the Foreign Mission Board 00:19:20.46\00:19:23.30 but the following year 1902 he became 00:19:23.33\00:19:26.72 Sectary of the General Conference 00:19:26.75\00:19:29.06 and for nearly 20 years 00:19:29.09\00:19:31.99 he was the Sectary of the General Conference. 00:19:32.02\00:19:33.88 Now a lot of viewers won't know 00:19:33.91\00:19:35.77 but the Secretariat of the GC is what's responsible 00:19:35.80\00:19:38.70 for sending foreign missions. 00:19:38.73\00:19:41.53 But how do you do that? 00:19:41.56\00:19:42.68 How do you send foreign missionaries? 00:19:42.71\00:19:44.07 You have to do all the logistics 00:19:44.10\00:19:45.63 of actually shipping them over, 00:19:45.66\00:19:47.91 taking care of them, their families. 00:19:47.94\00:19:49.82 Bring them back periodically few fellows. 00:19:49.85\00:19:52.39 It requires a huge infrastructure. 00:19:52.42\00:19:54.91 That's the part of mission service 00:19:54.94\00:19:56.69 we often don't talk about because it isn't glamorous. 00:19:56.72\00:19:59.56 But Spicer creates the infra structure 00:19:59.59\00:20:02.13 that allows the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:20:02.16\00:20:04.91 to send foreign missionaries all around the world 00:20:04.94\00:20:07.23 and to keep them there for long periods of time, 00:20:07.26\00:20:11.19 which includes bringing them home from time to time. 00:20:11.22\00:20:13.89 You know and that's still a major part 00:20:13.92\00:20:15.74 of the bureaucracy of General Conference, 00:20:15.77\00:20:18.72 but it's a necessary part and that is really 00:20:18.75\00:20:20.97 all the creation of William Ambrose Spicer. 00:20:21.00\00:20:23.66 There is one other key role he played. 00:20:23.69\00:20:25.38 He himself traveled the world between 1900 and 1940 00:20:25.41\00:20:30.91 there were four years in which he didn't go abroad to travel. 00:20:30.94\00:20:35.47 And every where he went he wrote articles for church papers. 00:20:35.50\00:20:38.64 And I would say, Gary, that Spicer implanted 00:20:38.67\00:20:42.10 worldwide missions in the Seventh-day Adventist DNA 00:20:42.13\00:20:45.71 so we have a huge amount to thank him for. 00:20:45.74\00:20:48.24 David, I wish we had a couple of hours, 00:20:48.27\00:20:50.10 because he is a fascinating member. 00:20:50.13\00:20:51.45 Thank you, so much. 00:20:51.48\00:20:53.03 Pleasure. Our viewers at home 00:20:53.06\00:20:55.18 we have so much to be thankful for in terms of people 00:20:55.21\00:20:59.31 who pioneered the way, who under God's guidance, 00:20:59.34\00:21:03.02 under His blessing had a vision. 00:21:03.05\00:21:05.59 They worked hard. 00:21:05.62\00:21:06.99 Many of them died young. 00:21:07.02\00:21:08.48 Many actually went overseas for mission 00:21:08.51\00:21:11.92 and they never came home and such sort 00:21:11.95\00:21:14.07 of pioneering service, such sort of commitment 00:21:14.10\00:21:17.53 to mission that we build on today and we thank them 00:21:17.56\00:21:20.44 for what they have done and we know 00:21:20.47\00:21:21.59 that God's spirit is still working today 00:21:21.62\00:21:24.16 in men and woman to follow them for mission. 00:21:24.19\00:21:27.15 To the Maasai walking is a way of life. 00:21:31.13\00:21:34.22 This morning they are walking 00:21:34.25\00:21:35.52 to the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:21:35.55\00:21:37.44 to attend a seminar about HIV/AIDS. 00:21:37.47\00:21:40.97 Many Maasai people continue to live a very traditional life 00:21:41.00\00:21:44.77 living in arid parts of the country, 00:21:44.80\00:21:47.09 where water is scarce. 00:21:47.12\00:21:48.82 Food and vegetables are almost unheard off 00:21:48.85\00:21:50.86 and their diet consists all most exclusively of milk 00:21:50.89\00:21:54.46 which they drink at least three times a day. 00:21:54.49\00:21:58.75 Long time medical missionaries Oscar and Eugenia Giordano, 00:21:58.78\00:22:02.37 are in Kenya to share information about HIV/AIDS 00:22:02.40\00:22:05.92 and to bring hope to those affected. 00:22:05.95\00:22:08.07 The husband and wife team of medical doctors 00:22:08.10\00:22:11.02 are heading up to Seventh-day Adventist Churches 00:22:11.05\00:22:13.17 HIV/AIDS ministry in Africa, 00:22:13.20\00:22:16.36 the Adventist Aids International ministry. 00:22:16.39\00:22:20.44 They encourage Adventist congregations to find ways 00:22:20.47\00:22:23.64 to help those infected with HIV, 00:22:23.67\00:22:25.99 to accept them and to give them the hope. 00:22:26.02\00:22:29.68 During the five days seminar Oscar and Eugenia 00:22:29.71\00:22:32.41 are staying in this Maasai Maniata 00:22:32.44\00:22:34.78 made of branches, plaster with cow dung 00:22:34.81\00:22:37.59 and usually covered with grass thatched. 00:22:37.62\00:22:41.00 You see us in a Maniata this is a traditional Maasai house 00:22:41.03\00:22:44.25 and usually the Maasai house, houses are very very dark inside 00:22:44.28\00:22:50.38 so that fly's wont come, but this one has been 00:22:50.41\00:22:52.61 tailored to due to our needs, 00:22:52.64\00:22:55.39 and there is light and there are flies. 00:22:55.42\00:22:58.82 They are also given Maasai names Eugenia 00:22:58.85\00:23:01.47 was given the name Naipota which means 'full of knowledge' 00:23:01.50\00:23:05.00 and Oscar was given the name Saruni 00:23:05.03\00:23:07.73 which means 'the one who came to help us.' 00:23:07.76\00:23:11.28 In the mornings before the programs 00:23:11.31\00:23:12.97 begin they walk the hills near by learning about Maasai ways 00:23:13.00\00:23:17.63 like the Maasai toothbrush, just chew the ends of a branch 00:23:17.66\00:23:21.90 from a special bush until you get bristles 00:23:21.93\00:23:24.50 and then brush away. 00:23:24.53\00:23:28.08 The area has been hit hard by drought. 00:23:28.11\00:23:32.00 You see this time we are experiencing 00:23:32.03\00:23:34.12 one of the toughest drought in Maasai island history 00:23:34.15\00:23:37.35 because for the last four years we had never had a good rain 00:23:37.38\00:23:40.54 to sustain to animals and we have lost 00:23:40.57\00:23:43.61 quite number of animals, almost 80 percent 00:23:43.64\00:23:46.38 of the animals on this island have been wiped by the drought. 00:23:46.41\00:23:50.14 The drought takes a human toll too especially 00:23:50.17\00:23:53.14 on those infected with HIV/AIDS who need 00:23:53.17\00:23:56.49 nutritious food like vegetables, to maintain their health. 00:23:56.52\00:24:00.22 Someday the Giordano's hope to have enough money 00:24:00.25\00:24:03.01 to drill a well that will provide water 00:24:03.04\00:24:05.04 for the surrounding area. 00:24:05.07\00:24:07.91 During the seminars the doctors share information 00:24:07.94\00:24:10.58 about HIV/AIDS with the group. 00:24:10.61\00:24:13.34 Then Dr. Eugenia spends time with the woman and girls 00:24:13.37\00:24:17.15 and Dr. Oscars spends time with the men and boys. 00:24:17.18\00:24:20.88 In the Maasai culture most men have more than one wife. 00:24:20.91\00:24:24.85 Many people practice polygamy, and if one is infected 00:24:24.88\00:24:29.04 the whole family is infected. 00:24:29.07\00:24:31.50 Yet many are afraid to be tested for fear 00:24:31.53\00:24:33.87 they will be ostracized. 00:24:33.90\00:24:36.05 And there are other problems with getting people 00:24:36.08\00:24:38.20 to understand how HIV/AIDS is transmitted. 00:24:38.24\00:24:41.63 Some still believe that evil spirits are responsible 00:24:41.66\00:24:44.46 for AIDS and for some there are other more immediate needs. 00:24:44.49\00:24:49.47 You know we found that the HIV message 00:24:49.50\00:24:53.10 about prevention, if it comes alone doesn't help 00:24:53.13\00:24:56.04 very much, because people are hungry. 00:24:56.07\00:24:58.83 So found if we can give them 00:24:58.86\00:25:00.82 practical solutions, they will listen. 00:25:00.85\00:25:03.58 So here in Maasai land, this group of people 00:25:03.61\00:25:06.97 they have different income generating activities, 00:25:07.00\00:25:09.73 for example they have a barber shop 00:25:09.76\00:25:12.63 where the young people they cut hair, 00:25:12.67\00:25:15.00 they have an earning, and at the same time 00:25:15.03\00:25:17.61 every person that is sitting 00:25:17.64\00:25:19.05 there will learn about HIV and AIDS. 00:25:19.08\00:25:21.86 The Giordano's also help by encouraging 00:25:21.89\00:25:24.18 them to grow small kitchen gardens and providing 00:25:24.21\00:25:27.31 a way for woman to earn money by sewing, 00:25:27.34\00:25:29.37 making beadwork crafts and baking bread 00:25:29.41\00:25:32.51 and cakes in a charcoal oven. 00:25:32.54\00:25:35.12 There is no electricity here and the closest barber shop 00:25:35.15\00:25:37.75 and bakery are some 40 kilometers away. 00:25:37.78\00:25:41.03 The Giordano's HIV/AIDS ministry 00:25:41.06\00:25:43.52 extends far beyond Maasai land. 00:25:43.55\00:25:45.88 In Kenya, the Giordano's are helping support churches 00:25:45.92\00:25:49.49 and other community organizations ministering 00:25:49.52\00:25:52.34 to those with HIV/AIDS. 00:25:52.37\00:25:55.64 Kingeero Adventist Church is helping grandmothers 00:25:55.67\00:25:58.30 earn a living by sewing, crafts and baking. 00:25:58.33\00:26:02.25 They are also making and bottling liquid detergent 00:26:02.28\00:26:05.71 and they even have their own yogurt production, 00:26:05.74\00:26:08.28 thanks to a new refrigerator bought by donors in Australia. 00:26:08.31\00:26:12.51 But one project leader has a special place 00:26:12.54\00:26:14.91 in the Giordano's hearts. 00:26:14.94\00:26:17.35 They met Angelina through the Adventist church 00:26:17.38\00:26:19.45 across the street from their ministry. 00:26:19.48\00:26:21.60 Angelina has been working with HIV/AIDS orphans 00:26:21.63\00:26:24.76 and their grandmothers, often retired, who are suddenly 00:26:24.79\00:26:28.30 faced with raising their grand children. 00:26:28.33\00:26:31.30 AAIM has funded project so that these grandmothers 00:26:31.33\00:26:34.88 can grow gardens or earn a small income 00:26:34.91\00:26:37.37 to help put food on the table. 00:26:37.40\00:26:40.13 Recently Angelina has been told that she, 00:26:40.16\00:26:42.79 the grandmothers and orphans, must leave the building 00:26:42.82\00:26:45.51 where she is been running her programs. 00:26:45.54\00:26:48.35 The Giordano's yearn to do more. 00:26:48.38\00:26:51.25 Everywhere they turned they see more needs, 00:26:51.28\00:26:54.02 more people who need hope. 00:26:54.05\00:26:58.05 Help somebody and you will feel such a happiness 00:26:58.08\00:27:02.25 in your heart that is priceless. 00:27:02.28\00:27:04.61 Global mission staff regularly gathers 00:27:11.56\00:27:13.59 the latest stories and information 00:27:13.62\00:27:16.16 about mission work from countries all around the globe. 00:27:16.19\00:27:19.25 If you live in North America and would like to know more 00:27:19.28\00:27:21.71 about what
