00:00:29.02\00:00:31.58 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:31.61\00:00:36.32 telling them of His love." 00:00:36.35\00:00:38.65 This is our mission. 00:00:38.68\00:00:41.11 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:41.14\00:00:43.45 Hello, I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:48.54\00:00:49.77 And welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:49.80\00:00:52.45 I love to read and love reading history 00:00:52.48\00:00:55.10 and the biographies of great men and women. 00:00:55.13\00:00:57.93 Our next guest Daivd Trim will be sharing 00:00:57.96\00:01:00.64 that some of the inspiring early missionaries 00:01:00.67\00:01:04.03 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:04.06\00:01:06.33 David, a historian is director of Archives, 00:01:06.36\00:01:09.10 Statistics and Research 00:01:09.13\00:01:10.72 for the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:01:10.75\00:01:12.91 And he uncovers many fascinating facts 00:01:12.94\00:01:15.60 about the history of Adventist mission. 00:01:15.63\00:01:18.72 On today's program we'll also be talking 00:01:18.75\00:01:20.62 with an urban church planter in Chicago. 00:01:20.65\00:01:23.37 But first up let's travel to Bangkok, Thailand. 00:01:23.40\00:01:27.16 About two hours outside of Thailand's capital city Bangkok 00:01:30.45\00:01:34.52 lies the town of Sriracha. 00:01:34.55\00:01:37.49 The Seventh-day Adventist church is growing here. 00:01:37.52\00:01:41.20 This is a global mission pioneer, 00:01:41.23\00:01:43.62 a church planter dedicated to sharing God's love 00:01:43.65\00:01:47.14 with the people in this area. 00:01:47.17\00:01:49.36 [Speaking foreign language] 00:01:49.39\00:01:52.50 This global mission pioneer and other Thai pastor 00:01:54.26\00:01:57.05 visit people in their homes to teach them about Jesus. 00:01:57.08\00:02:00.91 This small group is just handful 00:02:00.94\00:02:02.85 of those interested in studying God's word. 00:02:02.88\00:02:05.91 Many who attend these small groups 00:02:05.94\00:02:07.85 are not Christians. 00:02:07.88\00:02:09.35 They ask questions because in their hearts 00:02:09.38\00:02:11.62 they see the truth of the Bible and want to know more. 00:02:11.65\00:02:15.37 When somebody is interested 00:02:15.40\00:02:18.25 and like to learn more about Christianity 00:02:18.28\00:02:20.87 actually we feel so very happy-- 00:02:20.90\00:02:22.73 even they not so much but there's only one, 00:02:22.76\00:02:27.46 two people only but we feel like they are interested 00:02:27.49\00:02:31.56 and we thank God for that. 00:02:31.59\00:02:34.23 Not long ago 00:02:34.26\00:02:35.65 this church and community center was built in Sriracha. 00:02:35.68\00:02:39.49 The global mission pioneer and church members 00:02:39.52\00:02:41.81 reach out to the community in various ways. 00:02:41.84\00:02:44.86 They run language classes, 00:02:44.89\00:02:46.61 play soccer and hold Bible studies. 00:02:46.64\00:02:49.38 And people have responded positively. 00:02:49.41\00:02:52.11 We would like to provide this place 00:02:52.14\00:02:55.47 for the community here around. 00:02:55.50\00:02:58.04 The people here that they're nonbeliever 00:02:58.07\00:03:00.64 and then it will like to serve the congregation 00:03:00.67\00:03:03.10 by having school, having the soccer board field 00:03:03.13\00:03:08.48 and also at the same time we have a center 00:03:08.51\00:03:10.45 to service the community. 00:03:10.48\00:03:12.81 Seventh-day Adventist church members around the world 00:03:12.84\00:03:15.72 help fund this church and community center. 00:03:15.75\00:03:18.81 These buildings have a great impact 00:03:18.84\00:03:21.04 on reaching the needs of the people in Sriracha. 00:03:21.07\00:03:24.04 Just a few hours from Sriracha in the city of Ayutthaya 00:03:37.89\00:03:42.51 another recent projects funded by your mission offerings 00:03:42.54\00:03:45.42 actively works to reach the community. 00:03:45.45\00:03:48.21 Ayutthaya is a city known for its ancient temples 00:03:48.24\00:03:51.52 and vast history. 00:03:51.55\00:03:53.40 Here centuries ago 00:03:53.43\00:03:54.82 the Burmese armies destroyed this city 00:03:54.85\00:03:57.18 leaving behind remains of the destruction. 00:03:57.21\00:03:59.88 Now the church here is growing, 00:03:59.91\00:04:02.34 the project here as a church building. 00:04:02.37\00:04:04.88 The church here is creating a foundation of members. 00:04:04.91\00:04:08.25 On this Sabbath the pastors leaves and worship 00:04:08.28\00:04:11.24 and the members take part in the service. 00:04:11.27\00:04:13.60 It is a special Sabbath because on this day 00:04:13.63\00:04:16.70 they will participate in communion service. 00:04:16.73\00:04:19.95 Members humbly wash one another's feet 00:04:23.85\00:04:26.28 and pray together. 00:04:26.31\00:04:28.64 As they reenter the church their thoughts are with God. 00:04:32.39\00:04:36.22 The members ask God for forgiveness 00:04:36.25\00:04:38.52 and courage to serve Him each and every day. 00:04:38.55\00:04:41.60 They eat the bread and drink the juice 00:04:41.63\00:04:43.80 that represents the body and the blood of Jesus. 00:04:43.83\00:04:47.21 This congregation has a passion to serve God 00:04:47.24\00:04:49.87 and share Him with others. 00:04:49.90\00:04:52.24 This congregation would not have place to worship 00:04:52.27\00:04:55.74 if it was not for your faithful support 00:04:55.77\00:04:57.97 of mission offerings. 00:04:58.00\00:04:59.39 People all over Thailand are eager to learn about Jesus. 00:04:59.42\00:05:03.41 With the help of Adventist pastors 00:05:03.44\00:05:05.42 and global mission pioneers they will come to know Him. 00:05:05.45\00:05:09.46 Please, pray for these small projects 00:05:09.49\00:05:11.73 located throughout Thailand. 00:05:11.76\00:05:13.99 And thank you, for your support of the mission 00:05:14.02\00:05:16.92 of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:05:16.95\00:05:18.99 through your Thirteenth Sabbath offering. 00:05:19.02\00:05:21.93 Dr. Daivd Trim joins us 00:05:30.38\00:05:32.28 periodically to share biographies 00:05:32.31\00:05:34.70 of Adventist pioneers, 00:05:34.73\00:05:36.55 Adventist missionaries who have been very significant 00:05:36.58\00:05:39.60 in the development of mission 00:05:39.63\00:05:40.92 in the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:05:40.95\00:05:42.95 Daivd you care for archives, statistics and research 00:05:42.98\00:05:45.85 and you dig up a lot of interesting facts. 00:05:45.88\00:05:48.08 And who are we going to talk about today? 00:05:48.11\00:05:50.39 Today, Gary, we're going to talk about George Keough 00:05:50.42\00:05:52.76 and briefly about a man called Frank Oster. 00:05:52.79\00:05:55.78 Wonderful, tell us about Elder Kuo. 00:05:55.81\00:05:58.76 George D Keough 00:05:58.79\00:05:59.82 is one of the perhaps forgotten heroes of Adventist mission. 00:05:59.85\00:06:03.07 But he is the man who probably more than any other helped 00:06:03.10\00:06:06.55 to put Adventist mission in the Middle East 00:06:06.58\00:06:08.57 on a solid footing and he also experimented 00:06:08.60\00:06:12.32 with ways of what we called contextualization 00:06:12.35\00:06:14.94 of adapting of the medium of presenting the message 00:06:14.97\00:06:17.55 to local people in a way 00:06:17.58\00:06:18.95 that nobody else not the Seventh-day Adventist 00:06:18.98\00:06:21.17 but other Christians weren't doing. 00:06:21.20\00:06:23.05 He went to the Middle East in 1908. 00:06:23.08\00:06:25.79 He went to Egypt. 00:06:25.82\00:06:26.91 And he said when he arrived 00:06:26.94\00:06:28.09 there where it wish where to go out to learn Arabic. 00:06:28.12\00:06:30.04 And they said oh you don't. 00:06:30.07\00:06:31.34 You know we can't reach the local people. 00:06:31.37\00:06:34.07 It was not surprising 00:06:34.10\00:06:35.13 when they weren't speaking to the men in their language 00:06:35.16\00:06:36.98 but you know in Cairo at that time 00:06:37.01\00:06:38.34 they were only trying to reach European expatriates. 00:06:38.37\00:06:41.53 Keough learned Arabic and he went out of Cairo. 00:06:41.56\00:06:44.65 He went into the countryside with the villages were 00:06:44.68\00:06:47.85 and I have spoken to the descendents 00:06:47.88\00:06:49.74 of some of the people he worked with 00:06:49.77\00:06:51.37 and they described their fathers and grandfathers 00:06:51.40\00:06:53.55 telling them how this European came in 00:06:53.58\00:06:56.12 and sat on the dirt floors with them 00:06:56.15\00:06:58.75 and ate their food. 00:06:58.78\00:07:01.68 How he washed their feet. 00:07:01.71\00:07:04.24 Now this is the ear of empires and colonialism, Gary. 00:07:04.27\00:07:07.02 Europeans never did that. 00:07:07.05\00:07:08.08 No, no, no. 00:07:08.11\00:07:09.14 So, you know, if you can 00:07:09.17\00:07:10.27 so there is so much we could say about him 00:07:10.30\00:07:11.71 but we can say Keough modeled 00:07:11.74\00:07:14.86 what we called incarnational ministry 00:07:14.89\00:07:16.71 that is representing Christ to people. 00:07:16.74\00:07:18.85 He was Christ to ordinary people and they responded. 00:07:18.88\00:07:22.37 You know, he served in the Middle East for 20 years. 00:07:22.40\00:07:24.65 Wow. 00:07:24.68\00:07:25.71 He went back to England to teach Newbold College 00:07:25.74\00:07:28.73 for eight years. 00:07:28.76\00:07:29.79 In 1937, he got called back to the Arabic union 00:07:29.82\00:07:33.25 as it was then called where he was president. 00:07:33.28\00:07:35.53 Where things had gone things hadn't gone so well 00:07:35.56\00:07:38.11 since he left. 00:07:38.14\00:07:39.17 He put things back on a good footing. 00:07:39.20\00:07:40.91 He was called to Washington DC. 00:07:40.94\00:07:43.50 The SDA Theological Seminary had just been founded. 00:07:43.53\00:07:46.99 It's now at Andrews University. 00:07:47.02\00:07:48.26 Then it was in Washington DC. 00:07:48.29\00:07:50.45 And they had a program in Arabic language 00:07:50.48\00:07:53.20 and Islamic religion. 00:07:53.23\00:07:55.27 Gary, that was in 1944 it was founded 00:07:55.30\00:07:59.13 and it ended sadly in 1947 00:07:59.16\00:08:02.04 and there was nothing equivalent again for 40 years. 00:08:02.07\00:08:04.82 But he taught a whole group of students 00:08:04.85\00:08:06.56 including a man, many of viewers will remember 00:08:06.59\00:08:09.30 Neal Wilson the senior, former president of the GYC 00:08:09.33\00:08:14.30 who worked as a missionary in the Middle East. 00:08:14.33\00:08:16.92 And then he went back to the Middle East for a third time 00:08:16.95\00:08:18.95 when he was 65. 00:08:18.98\00:08:20.01 When most men would retire he went back again 00:08:20.04\00:08:22.76 and served for another ten years 00:08:22.79\00:08:24.49 before then starting another career in his 70s 00:08:24.52\00:08:27.60 as a teacher at Newbold way. 00:08:27.63\00:08:28.76 He influenced probably 00:08:28.79\00:08:29.82 all the leading Adventist theologians. 00:08:29.85\00:08:31.72 Just an amazing man and an extraordinary example 00:08:31.75\00:08:35.46 to us all I think. 00:08:35.49\00:08:37.14 Now when he first went to Egypt 00:08:37.17\00:08:38.82 what was his background before that? 00:08:38.85\00:08:40.90 He'd studied at-- it wasn't called Newbold in 00:08:40.93\00:08:43.84 but a college in England and he'd been inspired 00:08:43.87\00:08:47.47 by the stories of Daivd Livingston. 00:08:47.50\00:08:49.12 That's the stories of mission. 00:08:49.15\00:08:51.00 He'd been inspired 00:08:51.03\00:08:52.06 and he wanted to be a missionary. It's funny. 00:08:52.09\00:08:54.07 He was preparing in fact to go to Africa as Livingston had 00:08:54.10\00:08:56.98 and then at the last moment he got call 00:08:57.01\00:08:59.55 saying no Brother Keough was sending you to Egypt 00:08:59.58\00:09:01.42 and he writes about it later and says, 00:09:01.45\00:09:04.58 I said, but we were going to Africa. 00:09:04.61\00:09:07.10 And then they said well Egypt in Africa. 00:09:07.13\00:09:09.42 So he'd been thinking of course East Africa or somewhere. 00:09:09.45\00:09:13.86 But you know that's what the stories 00:09:13.89\00:09:16.17 of mission can do. They can inspire. 00:09:16.20\00:09:18.38 Now I'm interested he went as a very a young man to Egypt. 00:09:18.41\00:09:21.61 Now he had family with him when he went? 00:09:21.64\00:09:24.07 His children his oldest 00:09:24.10\00:09:25.72 two children were born in Egypt 00:09:25.75\00:09:27.27 and, you know, we forget the sufferings, 00:09:27.30\00:09:31.00 you know, the isolation that lot of mission families 00:09:31.03\00:09:33.47 had to endurance and still have to endure. 00:09:33.50\00:09:35.34 His wife would be left alone for weeks on end 00:09:35.37\00:09:38.92 because he traveled through Upper Egypt 00:09:38.95\00:09:41.23 where there was no communication. 00:09:41.26\00:09:42.74 Even railways were limited. 00:09:42.77\00:09:44.66 And, you know, there are extraordinary stories 00:09:44.69\00:09:46.63 of surviving on prayer. 00:09:46.66\00:09:47.92 Essentially in God working miracles to feed her 00:09:47.95\00:09:50.61 and her small children. 00:09:50.64\00:09:51.91 Wow, very inspiring. 00:09:51.94\00:09:53.45 Thanks, Daivd. 00:09:53.48\00:09:54.60 Now pastor Frank Oster. 00:09:54.63\00:09:56.40 Just briefly because our time is getting away from us. 00:09:56.43\00:09:59.20 Frank Oster is interesting. 00:09:59.23\00:10:00.29 Now he is not sort of a titanic figure like Keough 00:10:00.32\00:10:03.64 but he is significant. 00:10:03.67\00:10:04.70 He is the first Adventist missionary to Iran. 00:10:04.73\00:10:07.52 May 1, 1911 he enters Persia. 00:10:07.55\00:10:11.17 As Adventist called then and he leaves-- 00:10:11.20\00:10:15.60 he left a series of letters 00:10:15.63\00:10:18.42 which enable us to reconstruct his life 00:10:18.45\00:10:20.70 and also he wrote a series of gripping articles 00:10:20.73\00:10:22.89 for church periodicals at that time 00:10:22.92\00:10:24.94 describing his very difficult and dangerous journey 00:10:24.97\00:10:28.47 even just to get into the-- get to the border of Iran 00:10:28.50\00:10:31.10 and then across it. 00:10:31.13\00:10:32.33 But it's interesting he sets it, 00:10:32.36\00:10:33.73 you know, different example because his first year in Persia 00:10:33.76\00:10:37.98 he and his wife just studied the local language and culture. 00:10:38.01\00:10:40.74 So where as Keough mission officials 00:10:40.77\00:10:42.81 are saying oh don't worry with the local language 00:10:42.84\00:10:44.83 there you get a better model which in saying, 00:10:44.86\00:10:47.06 if you want to reach the local people 00:10:47.09\00:10:48.85 you have to know their language. 00:10:48.88\00:10:50.54 You have to able speak to them in their language. 00:10:50.57\00:10:52.76 But also of course, you have to know 00:10:52.79\00:10:54.23 something about their culture. 00:10:54.26\00:10:56.54 His wife also, you know, had an extraordinary story 00:10:56.57\00:10:59.51 when the First World War came 00:10:59.54\00:11:00.70 they had to be evacuated to Russia. 00:11:00.73\00:11:03.95 And she had just a young newborn baby 00:11:03.98\00:11:07.60 and a letter graphically describes them 00:11:07.63\00:11:09.86 riding across this mountain pass and being attacked by bandits. 00:11:09.89\00:11:13.78 And one of the bandits sees this bundle in Mrs. Osters arms 00:11:13.81\00:11:16.94 and thinks its money and ceases it and of course, 00:11:16.97\00:11:20.14 it's just a baby and lets the baby 00:11:20.17\00:11:21.62 dropping disgust and it rolls to the edge 00:11:21.65\00:11:23.48 of a precipice but no further. 00:11:23.51\00:11:26.29 So, you know, these are the experiences 00:11:26.32\00:11:29.33 that shaped our missionaries and they shaped 00:11:29.36\00:11:31.13 and created worldwide Adventist church. 00:11:31.16\00:11:33.28 Wonderful. 00:11:33.31\00:11:34.62 Thank Dr. Trim, for sharing with us. 00:11:34.65\00:11:36.60 Pleasure. 00:11:36.63\00:11:37.66 Viewers at home the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:11:37.69\00:11:40.65 began in sacrifice. 00:11:40.68\00:11:42.73 It is continued in sacrifice and it will only continue 00:11:42.76\00:11:46.94 as we wait for Jesus to come. 00:11:46.97\00:11:48.47 It will only move forward 00:11:48.50\00:11:49.65 as we continue to sacrifice for Jesus Christ. 00:11:49.68\00:11:53.35 You may feel a call 00:11:53.38\00:11:54.89 that you may be used as a missionary. 00:11:54.92\00:11:56.90 May be your children, may be your grandchildren. 00:11:56.93\00:11:59.22 Let's pray that God will continue to raise workers 00:11:59.25\00:12:02.23 because the harvest is ripe but the workers are few. 00:12:02.26\00:12:06.23 Urban mission is one of the biggest challenges 00:12:52.25\00:12:54.64 facing the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:12:54.67\00:12:57.01 As you look at our history 00:12:57.04\00:12:58.22 we have tendered to focus on rural areas. 00:12:58.25\00:13:01.53 But there is a renewed focus today 00:13:01.56\00:13:04.00 on what can we do 00:13:04.03\00:13:05.17 to touch our lives of people in the cities? 00:13:05.20\00:13:07.86 And I'm delighted that Andres has joined me because Andres, 00:13:07.89\00:13:12.05 I'm talking about it you're involved in it. 00:13:12.08\00:13:15.14 Chicago a district where there is a wide variety of people 00:13:15.17\00:13:20.19 and you have a team that is working there. 00:13:20.22\00:13:24.12 What are the major challenges you face in urban mission? 00:13:24.15\00:13:28.49 Trying to find ways to be incarnated in the community. 00:13:28.52\00:13:32.98 To be real to a community. 00:13:33.01\00:13:34.56 To be authentic. 00:13:34.59\00:13:36.25 Not to play church 00:13:36.28\00:13:38.69 the temptation to go back into our little statistical game 00:13:38.72\00:13:42.82 so big but finding ways to be authentic, 00:13:42.85\00:13:47.71 to be real, to be incarnated in the community. 00:13:47.74\00:13:50.72 Of course, the financial issues are important 00:13:50.75\00:13:53.79 because doing some of the missions 00:13:53.82\00:13:56.45 in Chicago is very expensive. Yeah. 00:13:56.48\00:13:58.51 But we know the Lord provides 00:13:58.54\00:14:00.59 more than that is how we do that. 00:14:00.62\00:14:03.85 Well, being authentic and real 00:14:03.88\00:14:05.77 and really revealing Jesus to the community. 00:14:05.80\00:14:07.92 Yeah. 00:14:07.95\00:14:08.98 Now you have been working there for less than a year 00:14:09.01\00:14:10.90 but I know that you have already touched 00:14:10.93\00:14:12.35 the lives of various people. 00:14:12.38\00:14:14.57 Can you tell me a story of somebody's life's 00:14:14.60\00:14:17.22 who has been changed? 00:14:17.25\00:14:18.46 Sure absolutely. 00:14:18.49\00:14:21.55 I'm just going to call him Hwan. 00:14:21.58\00:14:22.87 Yes. 00:14:22.90\00:14:24.02 And he was a cage fighter. 00:14:24.05\00:14:27.63 What's a cage fighter? 00:14:27.66\00:14:28.87 Cage fighter, they basically, 00:14:28.90\00:14:32.96 it's like an alternative of boxing. 00:14:32.99\00:14:35.76 With fewer rules. 00:14:35.79\00:14:37.27 With fewer rules, it's just raw. 00:14:37.30\00:14:39.22 It's just--two weeks before he came to Epic 00:14:39.25\00:14:43.50 for the first time he was shot at several times 00:14:43.53\00:14:48.36 and not one bullet touched him. 00:14:48.39\00:14:52.64 His life was spared. 00:14:52.67\00:14:54.84 And then somehow I think through his family 00:14:54.87\00:14:57.70 he was connected to Epic church. 00:14:57.73\00:15:01.29 Every week we have been ]meeting with him 00:15:01.32\00:15:03.29 and he has been attending worship services. 00:15:03.32\00:15:06.38 And his skipping the Sabbath. 00:15:06.41\00:15:09.16 But last weekend this last Sabbath 00:15:09.19\00:15:12.88 he came back himself not even with his family, 00:15:12.91\00:15:16.82 even his family was not there. 00:15:16.85\00:15:18.40 He came back himself he worshipped. 00:15:18.43\00:15:20.34 He went to the outreach activities with us. 00:15:20.37\00:15:22.75 He went to prepare meals for children in Africa. 00:15:22.78\00:15:26.39 And at the end of the day he was expressing 00:15:26.42\00:15:29.42 to couple of the young people how blessed he was 00:15:29.45\00:15:32.31 and how his life is being transformed. 00:15:32.34\00:15:35.55 This week I'm receiving a text message 00:15:35.58\00:15:37.39 from him saying you know I'm blessed have a blessed day. 00:15:37.42\00:15:40.37 And he is really engaged into Jesus. 00:15:40.40\00:15:42.03 This is a non Seventh-day Adventist non Christian 00:15:42.06\00:15:45.40 that is he sees how his life is being turned around 00:15:45.43\00:15:49.24 for Jesus Christ in Epic church. 00:15:49.27\00:15:51.94 Cage fighter and now in church. 00:15:51.97\00:15:54.00 Now giving free hugs. 00:15:54.03\00:15:55.26 Yeah, head of security for Epic. 00:15:55.29\00:15:57.39 Yeah he becomes to be a bouncer. 00:15:57.42\00:15:58.80 Yeah. 00:15:58.83\00:15:59.86 Remind me what Epic stands for. 00:15:59.89\00:16:02.83 Every Person in Christ. 00:16:02.86\00:16:04.04 Every person in Christ. 00:16:04.07\00:16:05.58 Now I understand you've also connected 00:16:05.61\00:16:07.57 with some gang members. 00:16:07.60\00:16:08.93 Yes, of course. 00:16:08.96\00:16:09.99 Yeah, I mean we have people that used to be in gangs 00:16:10.02\00:16:13.51 now they're in the family of Jesus Christ, 00:16:13.54\00:16:16.21 bringing more ex-gang members to Jesus to Epic church. 00:16:16.24\00:16:20.46 Now how is the contact made with these people? 00:16:20.49\00:16:23.69 Through people in the core group. 00:16:23.72\00:16:25.20 Some of the people in the core group invited them 00:16:25.23\00:16:28.44 and they are really serious about reaching people 00:16:28.47\00:16:32.51 not just in the urban centers and places like weaker part. 00:16:32.54\00:16:37.18 But also in the future some of them are even planning 00:16:37.21\00:16:40.44 and doing more activities and more outreaches in places 00:16:40.47\00:16:45.50 like the ghettos in Chicago. 00:16:45.53\00:16:47.12 Okay. 00:16:47.15\00:16:48.21 Because the neighborhood where you are working 00:16:48.24\00:16:50.62 has a lot of wealthy people as well. 00:16:50.65\00:16:53.63 Yes it does. Yeah. 00:16:53.66\00:16:54.69 It's a pretty diverse neighbor. 00:16:54.72\00:16:56.07 Diverse neighborhood. 00:16:56.10\00:16:57.13 And our church matches the diversity 00:16:57.16\00:16:59.07 in the neighborhood. 00:16:59.10\00:17:00.36 So your core group of Adventist involved-- 00:17:00.39\00:17:04.08 they are finding ways to mingle and connect. 00:17:04.11\00:17:08.00 Yes. 00:17:08.03\00:17:10.29 Sorry, I know about the hug program 00:17:10.32\00:17:12.66 where you offer free hugs on the streets. 00:17:12.69\00:17:14.72 What are other sorts of things 00:17:14.75\00:17:16.76 people doing to make friendships? 00:17:16.79\00:17:19.79 Through out the week we try to establish contact with people 00:17:19.82\00:17:23.68 on the park on the Wicker Park trying to talk to them. 00:17:23.71\00:17:27.96 Sit with them. Sit by them. 00:17:27.99\00:17:30.83 Establish relationships with them. 00:17:30.86\00:17:32.46 Establish relationship with the business owners. 00:17:32.49\00:17:36.06 Letting them know where are they. 00:17:36.09\00:17:38.06 And I know it will a very important 00:17:38.09\00:17:39.85 when you've social media 00:17:39.88\00:17:41.33 where we have a social media committee. 00:17:41.36\00:17:44.02 And these guys act like electronic evangelist. 00:17:44.05\00:17:47.45 Right. 00:17:47.48\00:17:48.51 And all of them are young people. 00:17:48.54\00:17:50.15 That are connecting with people in the community. 00:17:50.18\00:17:52.98 And a couple of weeks ago 00:17:53.01\00:17:54.28 we had a family an entire family that came as a result of that. 00:17:54.31\00:17:59.08 And they live two blocks away from the church. 00:17:59.11\00:18:03.00 And they invited me to meet with them tomorrow 00:18:03.03\00:18:06.34 because they have questions about the Sabbath 00:18:06.37\00:18:08.55 and our church and Jesus. 00:18:08.58\00:18:11.05 They want to know more about this. 00:18:11.08\00:18:12.95 And their initial contact was in social media. 00:18:12.98\00:18:15.21 Their initial contact was actually through people 00:18:15.24\00:18:18.00 passing flyers on the streets 00:18:18.03\00:18:19.81 and then went to the social media 00:18:19.84\00:18:21.62 and they really love the concepts there 00:18:21.65\00:18:25.34 and they came to Epic. 00:18:25.37\00:18:27.36 Now describe for me 00:18:27.39\00:18:28.99 a typical Epic service on Sabbath. 00:18:29.02\00:18:31.58 What do you do in the service? 00:18:31.61\00:18:34.80 It's highly energetic. 00:18:34.83\00:18:37.76 We contextualize our terminology 00:18:37.79\00:18:41.67 which means we don't assume people know. 00:18:41.70\00:18:44.61 We explain what we mean by happy Sabbath. 00:18:44.64\00:18:48.49 We have hymns. 00:18:48.52\00:18:50.33 We have prayer songs. 00:18:50.36\00:18:51.65 We have worship songs. 00:18:51.68\00:18:53.13 But every person that participates 00:18:53.16\00:18:55.46 is very intentional about communicating clearly 00:18:55.49\00:18:59.36 what it means to follow Jesus 00:18:59.39\00:19:00.90 and whatever happens in the service. 00:19:00.93\00:19:02.93 And we have a very diverse crowd of people. 00:19:02.96\00:19:05.70 We have people from every ethnic background, 00:19:05.73\00:19:07.76 worship, leading worship 00:19:07.79\00:19:09.22 and participate in the service as well. 00:19:09.25\00:19:11.33 Fantastic. 00:19:11.36\00:19:12.82 Andres, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:19:12.85\00:19:15.26 It is my pleasure. 00:19:15.29\00:19:16.42 And viewers at home please remember 00:19:16.45\00:19:18.89 Pastor Andres his team the church members 00:19:18.92\00:19:22.47 and the community to whom they're reaching out. 00:19:22.50\00:19:25.15 Right there in the heart of Chicago. 00:19:25.18\00:19:27.45 The sunsets along the river in western Russia. 00:19:29.50\00:19:32.43 Fishermen cast their lines in the water 00:19:32.46\00:19:34.49 hoping to catch one more fish before the day ends. 00:19:34.52\00:19:38.16 The locals take a stroll across the bridge 00:19:38.19\00:19:40.29 that extends across the wide river. 00:19:40.32\00:19:42.71 Here people take the time to stop 00:19:42.74\00:19:44.96 and enjoy the warm evening air. 00:19:44.99\00:19:47.91 Next to the river a group of people are gathered 00:19:47.94\00:19:50.21 around a street performer. 00:19:50.24\00:19:52.05 He tells us stories and draws pictures on an easel. 00:19:52.08\00:19:55.43 People laugh at his jokes 00:19:55.46\00:19:56.88 and smile as he makes the connection with them. 00:19:56.91\00:19:59.27 His name is Michael 00:19:59.30\00:20:01.03 and he is a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:20:01.06\00:20:03.77 He and a team of young people from the local church 00:20:03.80\00:20:06.87 come here several times a week to do art evangelism. 00:20:06.90\00:20:11.23 Michael uses his artistic talents 00:20:11.26\00:20:13.08 to tell a story to those who will stop and listen. 00:20:13.11\00:20:16.41 A story of someone who loves them very much. 00:20:16.44\00:20:19.77 Someone who died for their sins 00:20:19.80\00:20:21.57 and wants to make their lives hold. 00:20:21.60\00:20:24.03 As Michael tells his stories 00:20:24.06\00:20:26.08 young people from the church 00:20:26.11\00:20:27.36 pass out a newspaper called the Gazette. 00:20:27.39\00:20:30.30 The paper tells readers of Christian values 00:20:30.33\00:20:32.65 and how to better their lives. 00:20:32.68\00:20:35.15 It may seem like a simple thing but it has changed lives. 00:20:35.18\00:20:39.61 It has brought new life to people 00:20:39.64\00:20:41.50 who have been looking for something new. 00:20:41.53\00:20:43.87 Something to make their lives complete. 00:20:43.90\00:20:46.69 In Russian town of Krasnodar, 00:20:48.50\00:20:51.00 the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:20:51.03\00:20:52.45 is an active part of this community. 00:20:52.48\00:20:55.01 Here lay members have taken Jesus call 00:20:55.04\00:20:57.69 to spread the gospel to heart. 00:20:57.72\00:21:00.17 Through their outreach the church is growing 00:21:00.20\00:21:02.35 and spreading Jesus love. 00:21:02.38\00:21:04.82 They found new and creative ways to reach people. 00:21:04.85\00:21:08.17 Small groups meet in homes and church members 00:21:08.20\00:21:11.14 share their faith with their neighbors and friends. 00:21:11.17\00:21:13.97 Entire families are coming into the church 00:21:14.00\00:21:16.40 and they in turn share the story of Jesus 00:21:16.43\00:21:18.99 with those they come in contact with. 00:21:19.02\00:21:21.46 Hundreds of lives have been changed 00:21:21.49\00:21:23.92 and many of them can trace it to one thing, 00:21:23.95\00:21:26.98 the Gazette newspaper. 00:21:27.01\00:21:29.21 One of these people is Leanna. 00:21:29.24\00:21:32.42 One day she found the copy of the Gazette outside her door 00:21:32.45\00:21:35.53 and decided to read it. 00:21:35.56\00:21:36.92 It changed her life. 00:21:36.95\00:21:39.23 She says that without the church her life would be empty. 00:21:39.26\00:21:43.61 [Speaking foreign language] 00:21:43.64\00:21:46.37 It would be a like darkness. 00:21:46.40\00:21:48.21 It would be like my life would not have a purpose. 00:21:48.24\00:21:53.15 Through the simple act 00:21:53.18\00:21:54.23 of sharing a printed piece of paper 00:21:54.26\00:21:56.10 to Seventh-day Adventist church in Krasnodar is changing lives. 00:21:56.13\00:22:00.61 They're directly touching people and giving them hope. 00:22:00.64\00:22:04.29 A portion of your Thirteenth Sabbath offerings 00:22:04.32\00:22:06.77 this quarter will go to build 00:22:06.80\00:22:08.35 new churches in the Krasnodar region. 00:22:08.38\00:22:11.21 These buildings will serve as houses of light 00:22:11.24\00:22:13.80 to reach even more people 00:22:13.83\00:22:15.63 and bring them out of the darkness. 00:22:15.66\00:22:18.48 Thank you, for your support of Adventist
