A pastor tackling mission in one of the Americas biggest cities 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.87 and Pastor Mike Ryan 00:00:04.90\00:00:06.16 talking about the challenge of urban mission, 00:00:06.19\00:00:09.10 coming up next on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:09.13\00:00:12.47 Just before He went up to heaven Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:23.90\00:00:29.37 He gave us a mission. 00:00:29.40\00:00:32.15 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:32.18\00:00:36.83 telling them of His love." This is our mission. 00:00:36.86\00:00:41.58 This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:41.61\00:00:43.69 Hello and thanks for joining us on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:48.55\00:00:51.86 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:51.89\00:00:53.54 Every week on Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:53.57\00:00:55.41 we look at what's happening 00:00:55.44\00:00:56.71 in frontline Adventist Mission work around the world. 00:00:56.74\00:01:00.69 One of our biggest global mission challenges 00:01:00.72\00:01:03.09 is finding ways to reach the growing masses of people 00:01:03.12\00:01:06.78 in the big cities of the world. 00:01:06.81\00:01:09.06 On today's program we'll be talking 00:01:09.09\00:01:10.74 with Andres Flores a pastor and church planter 00:01:10.77\00:01:14.37 who has taken on the challenge of urban mission 00:01:14.40\00:01:16.73 in the heart of Chicago. 00:01:16.76\00:01:18.86 And he will be joined by Cindy Chamberlin, 00:01:18.89\00:01:21.14 communication director 00:01:21.17\00:01:22.65 for the Adventist church in Illinois. 00:01:22.68\00:01:25.28 And will also be talking with Mike Ryan 00:01:25.31\00:01:27.09 about the Adventist churches mission to the cities plan. 00:01:27.12\00:01:30.47 What we will be happening over the next few years? 00:01:30.50\00:01:33.33 But first let's watch a video that we made a few years ago 00:01:33.36\00:01:36.70 that highlights some of these challenging urban areas. 00:01:36.73\00:01:40.44 From the bustling harbor in Sydney 00:01:49.04\00:01:51.13 to remote tropical lagoons, 00:01:51.16\00:01:53.40 from busy cities streets to jungle landing strips, 00:01:53.43\00:01:57.28 from modern medical facilities to village clinics. 00:01:57.31\00:02:00.94 Welcome, to the South Pacific Division. 00:02:00.97\00:02:04.25 The South Pacific Division of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:02:09.09\00:02:11.93 includes Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea 00:02:11.96\00:02:16.00 and the Islands of the Pacific south of the equator. 00:02:16.03\00:02:19.62 Well small in-terms of Adventist membership 00:02:19.65\00:02:22.37 the south pacific division 00:02:22.40\00:02:23.66 occupies a large geographical area. 00:02:23.69\00:02:27.01 The majority of Adventist members are scattered 00:02:27.04\00:02:29.37 across 1000s of pacific islands 00:02:29.40\00:02:32.11 and 20 million square miles of ocean. 00:02:32.14\00:02:35.42 Here are islands such Nauru, Fiji, Samoa, 00:02:35.45\00:02:39.56 Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. 00:02:39.59\00:02:44.88 Over the years Adventist missionaries 00:02:49.70\00:02:51.90 have answered the call to mission to the islands. 00:02:51.93\00:02:54.84 Gary Krause, director of Adventist mission 00:02:54.87\00:02:57.51 talked with some of these missionaries 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.27 about their experiences. 00:02:59.30\00:03:01.34 One of these missionaries is Fran Newman, 00:03:01.37\00:03:03.79 a missionary nurse who went to Atoifi hospital 00:03:03.82\00:03:06.68 in the Solomon Islands in 1969. 00:03:06.71\00:03:10.33 It was only a little hospital 00:03:10.36\00:03:11.63 when compared with what it is now. 00:03:11.66\00:03:13.98 It was a 90 bed hospitals but when I did my monthly return, 00:03:14.01\00:03:17.90 we usually had an average more than a 100 patients a day. 00:03:17.93\00:03:21.49 I'm sure. 00:03:21.52\00:03:22.55 If we didn't turn anyone away with that paddlewheel canoe 00:03:22.58\00:03:24.79 for several days to get there. 00:03:24.82\00:03:28.31 They were happy to sleep wherever they could. 00:03:28.34\00:03:30.66 Mrs. Newman remembers meeting an old friend 00:03:30.69\00:03:33.25 for the first time while in the Solomon Islands. 00:03:33.28\00:03:36.88 Because probably one of the most exciting things that I had 00:03:36.91\00:03:39.33 while I was--experiences that I had while I was there. 00:03:39.36\00:03:41.89 I went up to the hospital one morning 00:03:41.92\00:03:44.32 and then I saw a name of a patient 00:03:44.35\00:03:47.93 that had been admitted over night. 00:03:47.96\00:03:49.48 His name was Danny Wanasuka. 00:03:49.51\00:03:51.81 And when I had been training at the San, 00:03:51.84\00:03:53.66 I had a pen pal at Betikama School by that name. 00:03:53.69\00:03:57.98 And it turned that it was my pen pal. 00:03:58.01\00:04:00.64 What a small world. After all though she is. 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.98 Isn't that amazing? 00:04:03.01\00:04:04.04 Yes, and to we went up to his village 00:04:04.07\00:04:06.32 which brought up in the hills 00:04:06.35\00:04:07.81 and they had been people coming down. 00:04:07.84\00:04:10.30 But I guess because there were no roads on Malaita 00:04:10.33\00:04:14.79 it was either walk or peddle your canoe to get there. 00:04:14.82\00:04:19.00 Travel on the islands was a bit tricky 00:04:19.03\00:04:21.26 sometimes as Mrs. Newman can tell. 00:04:21.29\00:04:24.33 And that's where I was taught to peddle a dugout canoe. 00:04:24.36\00:04:27.82 Okay, which is a handy skill to have. 00:04:27.85\00:04:30.36 Well, yes, because I was all right in the canoe 00:04:30.39\00:04:33.24 as long as I didn't breathe, as soon as breath I fell out 00:04:33.27\00:04:35.93 so I gave the children at the school a lot of laughter. 00:04:35.96\00:04:40.62 Oh, sure you did. And they're ready to laugh too. 00:04:40.65\00:04:44.58 Another of those missionaries to the south pacific islands 00:04:44.61\00:04:48.03 Bert Godfrey and his family, 00:04:48.06\00:04:50.23 went to the Solomon Islands in 1964. 00:04:50.26\00:04:53.56 We had a little boat or at least 00:04:53.59\00:04:57.05 we were supposed to and we got there. 00:04:57.08\00:04:58.57 It was out of commission for a while and we only had canoes. 00:04:58.60\00:05:01.83 And I had a better two months old daughter 00:05:01.86\00:05:06.21 which was a little nervy, but anyway 00:05:06.24\00:05:09.26 we got the old Keema back 00:05:09.29\00:05:11.47 and we were able to travel around 00:05:11.50\00:05:13.61 in the little ship called the Keema. 00:05:13.64\00:05:16.15 Now did you go to the Solomon's with the baby? 00:05:16.18\00:05:19.81 She was just a few days old when we left. 00:05:19.84\00:05:24.09 Weeks old I suppose be better yes. 00:05:24.12\00:05:26.80 Now that was a big decision with a newborn child. It was. 00:05:26.83\00:05:31.21 The medical care wouldn't exactly be 00:05:31.24\00:05:33.50 what we might wish for. 00:05:33.53\00:05:35.63 We were many hours away from the nearest medical help. 00:05:35.66\00:05:40.60 And I must confess that I had an awful shock 00:05:40.63\00:05:43.71 when I walked on the island 00:05:43.74\00:05:44.85 I walked up to the big school there 00:05:44.88\00:05:47.07 and there was a plaque at the entrance to the school 00:05:47.10\00:05:49.40 that told the story of a missionary 00:05:49.43\00:05:51.34 who came out with his young wife and she was buried there. 00:05:51.37\00:05:56.05 And I thought what I've done. 00:05:56.08\00:05:58.80 But the Lord was good to us. 00:05:58.83\00:06:00.39 And, yes, we had no problems whatever. 00:06:00.42\00:06:02.41 Everything went very, very well. 00:06:02.44\00:06:05.34 Mrs. Lynn Anderson went to Papua New Guinea 1968 00:06:05.37\00:06:10.21 serving first at Togoba leprosy hospital 00:06:10.24\00:06:13.47 and then working on a floating clinic 00:06:13.50\00:06:15.92 traveling part of the 700 miles Sepik River. 00:06:15.95\00:06:20.38 So we spent to achieve two-- two and half years 00:06:20.41\00:06:23.61 just doing clinics up and down the river 00:06:23.64\00:06:26.38 as far as we could in day trips. 00:06:26.41\00:06:30.64 We did at once stage two clinics the full 200 miles of the river 00:06:30.67\00:06:34.48 which we virtually did later on the path founder 00:06:34.51\00:06:38.03 that was our section of the river 00:06:38.06\00:06:40.20 because the Sepik River is 700 miles 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.64 and that was just phenomenal. 00:06:42.67\00:06:45.82 Doing clinics for the children all under five 00:06:45.85\00:06:49.44 for immunizations, then dealing with all the pregnant mothers 00:06:49.47\00:06:52.53 up and down the river. 00:06:52.56\00:06:54.22 As well as that we did the all the schools on the river 00:06:54.25\00:06:57.75 and some of them had 200 students 00:06:57.78\00:07:01.19 and there were a lot of schools. 00:07:01.22\00:07:03.47 Some very big villages and would take us 00:07:03.50\00:07:06.08 anyway from six hours to do a clinic. 00:07:06.11\00:07:10.83 So that was quite an experience. 00:07:10.86\00:07:13.61 We actually did the whole rive 00:07:13.64\00:07:15.46 and actually lived in the villages 00:07:15.49\00:07:17.27 all that section of the river, 00:07:17.30\00:07:18.70 I mean and lived in the villages. 00:07:18.73\00:07:21.88 At one stage indeed I have a period of three months 00:07:21.91\00:07:24.35 so that we could give them the immunization. 00:07:24.38\00:07:27.35 I guess one of the things that I can say 00:07:27.38\00:07:31.48 about was when I had a child 00:07:31.51\00:07:34.30 where they are actually lost, he actually died. 00:07:34.33\00:07:37.28 And when I went back into the clinics 00:07:37.31\00:07:38.86 the people said to me the women's said. 00:07:38.89\00:07:41.23 We never thought why woman's babies ever die. 00:07:41.26\00:07:45.27 And that brought the woman in me much closer. 00:07:45.30\00:07:49.17 Had the first one when I was on the Sepik 00:07:52.38\00:07:54.36 she went out for her first clinic 00:07:54.39\00:07:55.77 when she was two weeks old. And she joined. 00:07:55.80\00:07:59.52 And she was with me for the clinics every time 00:07:59.55\00:08:02.23 until she was back to 00:08:02.26\00:08:04.30 and then when we went back to talk about. 00:08:04.33\00:08:07.44 Now looking back on your mission service any regrets? 00:08:07.47\00:08:11.24 No, no nothing at all. But I did still do medical work. 00:08:11.27\00:08:15.65 I where ever I went I was always in charge 00:08:15.68\00:08:18.60 of the children's Sabbath schools. 00:08:18.63\00:08:21.38 And that was a big thing in my experience 00:08:21.41\00:08:24.75 because children would come some of them out 12, 13, 14 00:08:24.78\00:08:30.98 and you run this Sabbath school not Adventist 00:08:31.01\00:08:33.47 but they just enjoyed it. 00:08:33.50\00:08:35.08 And I just hope some of that has made 00:08:35.11\00:08:36.89 a difference in some of their lives. 00:08:36.92\00:08:39.41 Thanks to the love and dedication 00:08:39.44\00:08:41.08 of missionaries like these. 00:08:41.11\00:08:42.95 The foundations where laid for a church 00:08:42.98\00:08:44.86 that would grow rapidly on the islands. 00:08:44.89\00:08:47.48 Yet there are still mission challenges here. 00:08:47.51\00:08:50.37 There are still many areas that are remote 00:08:50.40\00:08:52.99 where medical care and spiritual resources are scarce. 00:08:53.02\00:08:57.35 For years, the Adventist church has operated clinics 00:08:57.38\00:09:00.57 in these remote villages. 00:09:00.60\00:09:02.76 As time passed the facilities grew old 00:09:02.79\00:09:05.60 and they were ill equipped. 00:09:05.63\00:09:07.44 In 2007, the Adventist church in the South Pacific 00:09:07.47\00:09:10.77 launched Adapt a Clinic. 00:09:10.80\00:09:12.84 A program to team each Adventist church 00:09:12.87\00:09:15.17 in Australia and New Zealand with one of the regions clinics 00:09:15.20\00:09:19.03 which range from bush huts to modern styled buildings. 00:09:19.06\00:09:23.37 Now they're looking at building some new clinics 00:09:23.40\00:09:25.32 and villages that are in need of some type of medical care. 00:09:25.35\00:09:29.79 Today, mission planes are helping in ferry people 00:09:29.82\00:09:32.87 and resources to these remote areas. 00:09:32.90\00:09:35.24 Thanks impart to worldwide support 00:09:35.27\00:09:37.73 of the Thirteenth Sabbath offerings several years ago. 00:09:37.76\00:09:40.98 These planes have a tremendous impact 00:09:41.01\00:09:43.38 on the lives of the people living in the areas they serve. 00:09:43.41\00:09:46.40 Yet the mission challenge remains, 00:09:46.43\00:09:49.02 one of the major challenges is reaching secular 00:09:49.05\00:09:51.72 and post modern people 00:09:51.75\00:09:53.18 in the major cities of the region 00:09:53.21\00:09:55.37 including the secular and post modern people 00:09:55.40\00:09:57.98 of Australia and New Zealand. 00:09:58.01\00:10:00.89 And even though I'm back here in Australia I think our church, 00:10:00.92\00:10:04.14 we got a mission field right here in Australia. 00:10:04.17\00:10:06.84 And on place that I still work outside the church 00:10:06.87\00:10:10.93 and I can witness to the people that I work with 00:10:10.96\00:10:13.24 and I hope I'll do the right thing. 00:10:13.27\00:10:15.94 Please pray for mission in the South Pacific division 00:10:15.97\00:10:19.48 and thank you for your support of the mission offerings. 00:10:19.51\00:10:24.49 More than a 100 years ago Adventist prophet Ellen White 00:10:35.19\00:10:38.72 said that the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:10:38.75\00:10:40.55 had neglected the cities. 00:10:40.58\00:10:42.53 I wonder what she would say today. 00:10:42.56\00:10:44.48 Working in the cities in mission can be very, very challenging 00:10:44.51\00:10:48.25 and I'm delighted that Andres and Cindy can join me today. 00:10:48.28\00:10:52.25 Andres, you're planting a church in Chicago. 00:10:52.28\00:10:56.30 And Cindy, you represent the conference 00:10:56.33\00:10:59.24 which is the organization that oversees 00:10:59.27\00:11:01.20 churches in the Illinois area. 00:11:01.23\00:11:04.02 First up, just describe briefly, 00:11:04.05\00:11:06.72 Andres, what is your mission in Chicago? 00:11:06.75\00:11:10.21 Our mission is to bring the presence of Jesus 00:11:10.24\00:11:14.26 to reveal Jesus in the city of Chicago. 00:11:14.29\00:11:17.58 His personality, His love, His passion for the urban area 00:11:17.61\00:11:23.22 for especially particularly for young adults 00:11:23.25\00:11:25.59 in the demographics between 18-29 years old. 00:11:25.62\00:11:29.02 And bring His message, His love in practical 00:11:29.05\00:11:32.39 and relevant way for young adults post modern, 00:11:32.42\00:11:35.58 hipsters and the like. Wonderful. 00:11:35.61\00:11:38.63 Cindy, you recently visited this project 00:11:38.66\00:11:42.06 tell us what did you find. 00:11:42.09\00:11:44.05 Well, when I visited I went downtown Chicago 00:11:44.08\00:11:49.15 and I realized instantly how valuable this project was. 00:11:49.18\00:11:54.75 Because, we are the only Adventist presence in that area. 00:11:54.78\00:12:01.27 Without our presence there would be no representation 00:12:01.30\00:12:06.12 from our church in that area. 00:12:06.15\00:12:08.81 Now when did this project start? 00:12:08.84\00:12:11.62 The open house officially was-- 00:12:11.65\00:12:14.59 The May of 2012. 00:12:14.62\00:12:17.05 2012 and so relatively new. Oh, yeah. 00:12:17.08\00:12:21.04 When you arrived there, Andres, 00:12:21.07\00:12:24.09 I guess you studied the neighborhood 00:12:24.12\00:12:25.67 to try to understand. 00:12:25.70\00:12:27.40 Well, what sort of people are you connecting with? 00:12:27.43\00:12:30.16 We're connecting with all sorts of people. 00:12:30.19\00:12:33.30 Mainly young adults so again from 18-29 00:12:33.33\00:12:36.51 that's our main demographic 00:12:36.54\00:12:38.48 but we're reaching our objective is to reach 00:12:38.51\00:12:41.32 to the local dwellers in the area of Wicker Park. 00:12:41.35\00:12:46.92 Wicker Park is our neighborhood known-- 00:12:46.95\00:12:50.39 it's very artistic. Highly interested in music. 00:12:50.42\00:12:54.57 Post modern young professionals. 00:12:54.60\00:12:57.90 So these are the people who are trying to reach 00:12:57.93\00:13:00.36 and we are seeing people coming to our church 00:13:00.39\00:13:03.98 as a result of some of the activities 00:13:04.01\00:13:05.68 we are doing in the community as well. Wonderful. 00:13:05.71\00:13:08.45 Now, Cindy, when you visited 00:13:08.48\00:13:10.43 I guess everybody was wearing suit and ties. 00:13:10.46\00:13:14.27 No it helps for the audience to remember this 00:13:14.30\00:13:17.95 as a completely unchurched area. 00:13:17.98\00:13:21.79 Completely unchurched. 00:13:21.82\00:13:24.01 These are people that would never had go 00:13:24.04\00:13:26.21 into a traditional church. 00:13:26.24\00:13:29.30 So these are people who come from backgrounds of unbelief 00:13:29.33\00:13:33.84 or people who'd never even thought about God before 00:13:33.87\00:13:37.10 in a serious way and so that they're coming 00:13:37.13\00:13:39.53 into Christian environment for the first time. 00:13:39.56\00:13:43.16 So, Cindy, when you visited 00:13:43.19\00:13:45.60 did you get to meet any of the people? 00:13:45.63\00:13:47.69 Yes. I actually, met many of the people. 00:13:47.72\00:13:51.39 One was even an ex-gang member 00:13:51.42\00:13:54.07 and that had been his particular territory 00:13:54.10\00:13:56.66 and now he is reclaiming at as a Christian 00:13:56.69\00:13:59.38 from a whole different worldview. 00:13:59.41\00:14:01.15 Well, how did you meet him, Andres? 00:14:01.18\00:14:04.15 He was invited by one of the core group members. 00:14:04.18\00:14:07.94 So we have a core group-- a core team 00:14:07.97\00:14:10.80 those are the missionaries 00:14:10.83\00:14:12.47 that help the church plan get started. Wow. 00:14:12.50\00:14:15.92 So he was invited and now he is invited more friends 00:14:15.95\00:14:19.35 around his age and interest 00:14:19.38\00:14:22.07 and they're now coming to Jesus as well. 00:14:22.10\00:14:24.49 So let me illustrate, he is a gang member 00:14:24.52\00:14:27.90 and he gets invited into 00:14:27.93\00:14:29.89 a Christian environment and he liked it. 00:14:29.92\00:14:33.43 Is that what happened? 00:14:33.46\00:14:34.49 I mean, how did he stayed, 00:14:34.52\00:14:35.55 I mean didn't-- why didn't' he say 00:14:35.58\00:14:36.64 all this is just rubbish and go? 00:14:36.67\00:14:37.92 I mean what happened? 00:14:37.95\00:14:39.41 Well, you know, when people like this are absorb, 00:14:39.44\00:14:42.88 assimilated because of the relationships, 00:14:42.91\00:14:46.15 because of love. 00:14:46.18\00:14:47.30 Because of their really see in Jesus 00:14:47.33\00:14:48.89 being taught in a beautiful way. 00:14:48.92\00:14:53.16 They just have this passion to stay there 00:14:53.19\00:14:55.55 and bring more people to Jesus Christ as well. 00:14:55.58\00:14:59.55 Cindy, you are a communication director 00:14:59.58\00:15:01.61 and you work with administrators 00:15:01.64\00:15:03.54 who have to make decisions about where we put pastors 00:15:03.57\00:15:07.60 and how do we keep church members involved. 00:15:07.63\00:15:09.69 How do we keep them happy? 00:15:09.72\00:15:11.82 Does this sort of project come in for some criticism? 00:15:11.85\00:15:14.74 It certainly does. 00:15:14.77\00:15:16.24 And let me say one other thing that I saw while was there. 00:15:16.27\00:15:20.49 I saw--many of our 18 to 22 year old 00:15:20.52\00:15:26.54 involved active and happy. 00:15:26.57\00:15:28.89 Many are coming even from Andrews University 00:15:28.92\00:15:31.98 to support pastor Andres in his project. 00:15:32.01\00:15:34.72 They are coming weekly. 00:15:34.75\00:15:36.18 This is an Adventist university what about two hours away. 00:15:36.21\00:15:38.82 Two hours away from his church plant in Epic. 00:15:38.85\00:15:42.40 And I see the church studies and you do too 00:15:42.43\00:15:46.21 where our youth are leaving at like at 9 to 10 ratio. 00:15:46.24\00:15:51.36 So that's about 90 percentage of our youth 00:15:51.39\00:15:53.87 that re just exiting our doors and never coming back. 00:15:53.90\00:15:57.33 So this speaks volumes that they're helping 00:15:57.36\00:16:01.30 lead many of our core members and helping lead 00:16:01.33\00:16:04.32 and very interested in this church 00:16:04.35\00:16:06.61 and to see that many of our young people in one spot 00:16:06.64\00:16:10.13 I had forgotten how that even looked. 00:16:10.16\00:16:13.14 That is just miraculous. 00:16:13.17\00:16:15.38 And it gives them certainly vision as well. 00:16:15.41\00:16:18.41 The conference is very much on board 00:16:18.44\00:16:20.62 and very supportive of this project 00:16:20.65\00:16:22.74 and trying to give this baby the CPR it needs. Fantastic. 00:16:22.77\00:16:28.74 Andres, Cindy, thank you so much for joining us 00:16:28.77\00:16:31.01 and telling us about this exciting story. 00:16:31.04\00:16:33.72 And to our viewers at home, 00:16:33.75\00:16:35.83 urban mission there is no easy formula. 00:16:35.86\00:16:38.34 It can be messy, it can be complicated, 00:16:38.37\00:16:40.23 it can be difficult. 00:16:40.26\00:16:42.05 And so often we may see things 00:16:42.08\00:16:43.87 that we do differently 00:16:43.90\00:16:45.11 but rather than sitting back and criticizing we need to pray. 00:16:45.14\00:16:48.77 We need pray. We need to encourage. 00:16:48.80\00:16:50.57 We need to support because men and women, 00:16:50.60\00:16:53.03 boys and girls lives are being touched 00:16:53.06\00:16:55.57 for eternity in urban areas 00:16:55.60\00:16:58.34 through the ministry of people 00:16:58.37\00:16:59.72 such as Pastor Andres and his team. 00:16:59.75\00:17:02.31 Urban mission is one of the major challenges 00:17:47.23\00:17:49.37 facing global mission today. 00:17:49.40\00:17:51.55 To talk with me about this is Elder Mike Ryan 00:17:51.58\00:17:53.95 who was the first director of Global Mission 00:17:53.98\00:17:56.47 and is now the vice president 00:17:56.50\00:17:58.75 for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:17:58.78\00:18:00.77 Mike, welcome. Yeah it's good to be here. 00:18:00.80\00:18:03.82 In the good old days it used to be you 00:18:03.85\00:18:05.67 asking me the questions 00:18:05.70\00:18:06.82 and I'm very happy today to be asking you questions. 00:18:06.85\00:18:09.31 Yeah, well, I'm happy to be seated on this side 00:18:09.34\00:18:13.62 and I don't know that I know the answers. 00:18:13.65\00:18:15.23 But I'm glad to talk with you. Okay. 00:18:15.26\00:18:17.71 Urban mission, the challenge of reaching 00:18:17.74\00:18:19.69 the cities was something that was in the radar 00:18:19.72\00:18:24.32 of global mission right from the start. 00:18:24.35\00:18:25.71 How did that happened? It certainly was. 00:18:25.74\00:18:27.07 I remember back in 1988 and 89 00:18:27.10\00:18:30.62 when global mission was being planned 00:18:30.65\00:18:33.78 at meetings down at Cohutta Springs, Georgia. 00:18:33.81\00:18:37.09 And in those early discussions 00:18:37.12\00:18:39.11 we met there each year for a week 00:18:39.14\00:18:41.24 putting this program together. 00:18:41.27\00:18:43.19 Cities, was part of that just discussion 00:18:43.22\00:18:44.99 from the very beginning and at that point 00:18:45.02\00:18:46.89 we were looking into the future 00:18:46.92\00:18:49.35 when we knew the day would come 00:18:49.38\00:18:51.04 when most people would live in big cities. 00:18:51.07\00:18:54.19 Well, now of course that date has come and gone 00:18:54.22\00:18:56.11 and now you have about 52, 53 percent 00:18:56.14\00:18:59.39 of the world population 00:18:59.42\00:19:01.16 living in cities greater than a million. 00:19:01.19\00:19:03.52 Wow. Now Mike the world church is focusing on urban mission. 00:19:03.55\00:19:08.72 It seems to be a priority of administration. 00:19:08.75\00:19:11.32 What are the plans? 00:19:11.35\00:19:12.38 Yeah, of course, that again has its home in Adventist mission. 00:19:12.41\00:19:16.21 And so I think they still carry the portfolio in that 00:19:16.24\00:19:19.86 but obviously, you know, its something 00:19:19.89\00:19:23.69 that in our history we have struggled with. 00:19:23.72\00:19:27.76 If you compare the ratio of Adventist 00:19:27.79\00:19:30.52 to population in cities it's a much bigger challenge 00:19:30.55\00:19:34.40 than if you compare the population 00:19:34.43\00:19:36.69 and Adventist that ration outside the cities. 00:19:36.72\00:19:40.23 And so we know that we face this challenge and so 00:19:40.26\00:19:46.43 and looking at that we need to put a plan together 00:19:46.46\00:19:51.17 that the world church understands. 00:19:51.20\00:19:53.90 And of course, and you know sometimes 00:19:53.93\00:19:57.96 that's a kind of difficult thing to do 00:19:57.99\00:19:59.96 but very simply put the plan that it has been put together 00:19:59.99\00:20:06.03 is that the General Conference has selected one city 00:20:06.06\00:20:11.51 which is New York City in which we try to provide 00:20:11.54\00:20:16.48 a model for the world church on how to work in cities. 00:20:16.51\00:20:21.16 And then we have asked each division 00:20:21.19\00:20:23.97 and that's 13 of them. 00:20:24.00\00:20:26.38 And the one attached union to select the city. 00:20:26.41\00:20:31.29 So that would be 14. 00:20:31.32\00:20:33.13 And then we have asked each union to select the city. 00:20:33.16\00:20:37.51 Well, that's about a 106 00:20:37.54\00:20:39.60 and then we have asked each conference well that's 528. 00:20:39.63\00:20:44.63 So when you look at the entire formula 00:20:44.66\00:20:49.90 between now and the year 2015 00:20:49.93\00:20:53.05 we are hoping to have 00:20:53.08\00:20:55.04 a comprehensive evangelism program 00:20:55.07\00:20:58.09 running in almost the 650 cities around the world. 00:20:58.12\00:21:02.06 And so that's a huge challenge. 00:21:02.09\00:21:04.90 And so, you know, if that's what lies before us. 00:21:04.93\00:21:10.32 Now, Mike, you and I have been working on a project 00:21:10.35\00:21:14.15 called Centers of Influence based on Ellen White's counsel. 00:21:14.18\00:21:18.24 And in New York City we're planning 00:21:18.27\00:21:19.69 to have four of these established very soon. 00:21:19.72\00:21:22.82 Describe for us what we envisage 00:21:22.85\00:21:24.45 when we are talking about life help centers 00:21:24.48\00:21:26.15 or Centers of Influence. 00:21:26.18\00:21:27.54 Okay, some of the-- 00:21:27.57\00:21:30.15 some of the challenge in cities is speaking a language 00:21:30.18\00:21:34.58 and doing things that actually identify with people. 00:21:34.61\00:21:38.31 And if you read the counsel given to us by Ellen White 00:21:38.34\00:21:46.20 and also some of the very basic principles of the Bible 00:21:46.23\00:21:50.86 it really instructs us that we need to connect 00:21:50.89\00:21:53.72 with the community and be decent people. 00:21:53.75\00:21:56.17 To try to make a difference in the community. 00:21:56.20\00:21:58.69 A life hope center is a center that will operate 00:21:58.72\00:22:02.13 and out of that center it's envisioned 00:22:02.16\00:22:04.76 that there will be many health programs 00:22:04.79\00:22:06.77 that will be offered to the community. 00:22:06.80\00:22:09.37 Language programs, literacy programs, 00:22:09.40\00:22:12.76 community service type programs-- 00:22:12.79\00:22:16.81 and as these programs 00:22:16.84\00:22:20.75 specifically address needs in the community, 00:22:20.78\00:22:24.08 people will become interested. 00:22:24.11\00:22:26.09 They will come and they will attend these 00:22:26.12\00:22:27.59 and it will make a difference in their lives. 00:22:27.62\00:22:30.00 And I feel that these life hope centers will be a way 00:22:30.03\00:22:36.12 of expanding the pool of people 00:22:36.15\00:22:41.47 who really don't even know Jesus. 00:22:41.50\00:22:43.78 And to have them take a look and go, 00:22:43.81\00:22:45.26 oh, this is what Christianity is about 00:22:45.29\00:22:48.09 and become interested actually in the message of the Bible. 00:22:48.12\00:22:54.14 And of course, that's our guide to live by 00:22:54.17\00:22:55.98 it is the message of the Bible 00:22:56.01\00:22:57.15 and that's what we tried to interest people 00:22:57.18\00:22:58.78 because of course the man of that book is Jesus. 00:22:58.81\00:23:02.29 And so that's the purpose of these life hope centers. 00:23:02.32\00:23:05.71 Now Ellen White said that we should have dozens of these 00:23:05.74\00:23:09.46 in not huge centers but smaller centers. 00:23:09.49\00:23:12.79 What is the result that we want to see 00:23:12.82\00:23:14.52 from centers of influence? 00:23:14.55\00:23:16.44 Well, obviously we want to bridge from these activities 00:23:16.47\00:23:22.01 to introducing people to Jesus and the biblical truths. 00:23:22.04\00:23:26.16 There is no question that bridges 00:23:26.19\00:23:28.45 we want to make sure that that is build. 00:23:28.48\00:23:30.23 And that anyone that would be 00:23:30.26\00:23:35.02 a possibility of sharing Christ with 00:23:35.05\00:23:37.99 we don't want to pass that opportunity by. 00:23:38.02\00:23:40.36 Fantastic, Elder Ryan, 00:23:40.39\00:23:41.52 and thank you for joining us today. It's privilege. 00:23:41.55\00:23:43.91 Viewers at home Elder Ryan has outlined 00:23:43.94\00:23:46.32 a comprehensive urban mission plan 00:23:46.35\00:23:49.58 reaching people where they're at. 00:23:49.61\00:23:51.23 Not expecting them to come to us 00:23:51.26\00:23:52.86 but finding ways that we can go to them 00:23:52.89\00:23:55.76 and show the love of Jesus in very practical ways 00:23:55.79\00:23:58.83 showing the love that can only come from Jesus Christ 00:23:58.86\00:24:01.90 and then bidding them to follow Him. 00:24:01.93\00:24:03.78 Its early morning before dawn. 00:24:06.79\00:24:08.60 The Adventist aviation plane is parked in the hangar. 00:24:08.63\00:24:11.99 Daniel our pilot arrives and gets the aircraft ready 00:24:12.02\00:24:15.28 for its first mission today. 00:24:15.31\00:24:17.35 Fasten your seatbelts as we taxi to the runway. 00:24:17.38\00:24:20.59 This is another day of mission service. 00:24:20.62\00:24:23.36 We're flying northeast over Papua New Guinea 00:24:26.36\00:24:29.22 at an altitude of 10,000 feet. 00:24:29.25\00:24:31.80 It's fairly warm in the plane 00:24:31.83\00:24:33.32 and it's a gorgeous morning out the window. 00:24:33.35\00:24:36.95 Papua New Guinea is one of the most 00:24:36.98\00:24:38.55 culturally diverse places on earth 00:24:38.58\00:24:41.69 with pristine teaming jungles, jagged mountains, 00:24:41.72\00:24:46.30 deep valleys and turbulent rivers. 00:24:46.33\00:24:49.67 It's one of the least developed 00:24:49.70\00:24:51.24 and most traditional countries on this planet 00:24:51.27\00:24:54.10 where people live much as they have for thousands of years. 00:24:54.13\00:24:57.84 And we're on our way to a remote place 00:24:57.87\00:25:00.64 in the highlands of New Guinea to visit a small village. 00:25:00.67\00:25:04.16 Look down there it is. 00:25:07.17\00:25:08.95 We're approaching our first destination. 00:25:08.98\00:25:11.59 The villagers are always happy to see us. 00:25:11.62\00:25:14.32 These two children even made modeler planes 00:25:14.35\00:25:16.85 as a sing of admiration for the aviation service. 00:25:16.88\00:25:20.73 The cargo is quickly unloaded 00:25:20.76\00:25:22.49 and we're off to our next appointment. 00:25:22.52\00:25:24.83 The Seventh-day Adventist plane 00:25:28.28\00:25:29.64 travels the local towns and villages 00:25:29.67\00:25:31.69 where it is very hard to reach with food, 00:25:31.72\00:25:34.27 supplies and medicines for the clinics. 00:25:34.30\00:25:37.20 By plane we can cover distances in an hour 00:25:37.23\00:25:40.67 where it would have taken weeks in the past. 00:25:40.70\00:25:42.99 And for some villages it's the only way in 00:25:43.02\00:25:46.30 as they are no roads. 00:25:46.33\00:25:48.89 On our next step we'll surprise the people 00:25:48.92\00:25:51.18 with a very unique guest. 00:25:51.21\00:25:52.75 A lawnmower it may seem a trivial tool 00:25:52.78\00:25:55.80 but to the local people it will provide a way 00:25:55.83\00:25:58.53 to maintain their surroundings, gardens, plantations, 00:25:58.56\00:26:02.14 and even a clear runway for the plane. 00:26:02.17\00:26:05.03 They seem very excited with the new guest. 00:26:05.06\00:26:07.76 And after a simple demonstration 00:26:07.79\00:26:09.69 they're equipped to continue the work. 00:26:09.72\00:26:14.17 On our last leg of our trip. 00:26:14.20\00:26:15.78 We will pick up bags of crops. 00:26:15.81\00:26:18.19 The airplane will transport the merchandise to the city 00:26:18.22\00:26:20.97 and bring back means to provide for this community survival. 00:26:21.00\00:26:26.41 Your mission offering supports projects 00:26:29.80\00:26:31.72 like these every day and it
