We are here in Thailand right now, 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.58 a country that is well known for its name, 00:00:02.61\00:00:05.53 the land of smiles. 00:00:05.56\00:00:07.46 It's hard for the church to do work here. 00:00:07.49\00:00:09.74 It's a bit challenging. 00:00:09.77\00:00:11.37 But we are here to meet some people 00:00:11.40\00:00:13.31 who are making a difference and to hear 00:00:13.34\00:00:15.76 about the kind of the work that they are doing 00:00:15.79\00:00:17.25 in this urban city of Bangkok. 00:00:17.28\00:00:19.74 Welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:19.77\00:00:22.06 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:33.96\00:00:36.38 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:36.41\00:00:39.26 He gave us a mission. 00:00:39.29\00:00:42.14 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:42.17\00:00:46.87 telling them of His love." 00:00:46.90\00:00:49.31 This is our mission. 00:00:49.34\00:00:51.50 This is our Global Mission. 00:00:51.53\00:00:53.66 Hello, I am Gary Krause 00:00:58.94\00:01:00.32 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:01:00.35\00:01:02.92 Did you realize that as many as one billion people 00:01:02.95\00:01:05.63 in today's world don't have access to basic medical care? 00:01:05.66\00:01:10.42 On today's program we will be looking 00:01:10.45\00:01:12.06 at what Seventh-day Adventists are doing to help 00:01:12.09\00:01:15.35 provide clinics in remote areas. 00:01:15.38\00:01:17.93 We will also be traveling to Russia, 00:01:17.96\00:01:19.55 Thailand and the South Pacific and we will be talking 00:01:19.58\00:01:22.74 with David Trim the director of Archives, Statistics 00:01:22.77\00:01:25.91 and Research for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:25.94\00:01:29.26 We will be talking about various aspects of mission. 00:01:29.29\00:01:32.00 This and so much more coming up right here 00:01:32.03\00:01:34.85 on Global Mission Snapshots but first lets look 00:01:34.88\00:01:37.97 at healing South Pacific. 00:01:38.00\00:01:40.94 On this early morning a mission pilot warms up his plane, 00:01:44.06\00:01:48.46 he is preparing for the day. 00:01:48.49\00:01:50.82 As he flies over some of the most remote jungles 00:01:50.85\00:01:53.32 of Papua New Guinea, he prays 00:01:53.35\00:01:55.29 for the great need in this region. 00:01:55.32\00:02:00.36 The people here are in need of medical attention. 00:02:00.39\00:02:03.58 As the pilot approaches a village 00:02:03.61\00:02:05.33 he knows that God is working here. 00:02:05.36\00:02:07.52 In Mengino village the Seventh-day Adventist 00:02:07.55\00:02:09.82 has set up a small medical clinic. 00:02:09.85\00:02:12.60 This clinic offers the people 00:02:12.63\00:02:14.06 in the village medical attention. 00:02:14.09\00:02:16.44 The people here constantly struggle with such things 00:02:16.47\00:02:18.78 as malaria, broken bones, the flue and pregnancies. 00:02:18.81\00:02:23.51 For a majority of these people this is only access 00:02:23.54\00:02:26.04 to medical care they will ever have. 00:02:26.07\00:02:28.77 You can begin to see 00:02:28.80\00:02:29.88 the importance of this service. 00:02:29.91\00:02:37.56 People travel great distances on foot 00:02:37.59\00:02:39.80 from other villages to the Mengino clinic. 00:02:39.83\00:02:42.73 Roy Lowly walked here with his parents from other village. 00:02:42.76\00:02:45.80 They came in search of treatment for his mother 00:02:45.83\00:02:47.84 who was not feeling well. 00:02:47.87\00:02:49.62 After trekking for hours through the jungle to get here, 00:02:49.65\00:02:52.33 this family is very appreciative of the work being done 00:02:52.36\00:02:55.64 and hopes for a clinic in their village someday. 00:02:55.67\00:02:59.22 We have a privilege to have the SDA mission 00:02:59.25\00:03:03.37 to come up here and set this hospital 00:03:03.40\00:03:07.12 so that all the people around the bush places like here, 00:03:07.15\00:03:13.86 we usually come and take medicine here for treatment. 00:03:13.89\00:03:21.32 As the mission pilot prepares to leave he sees first hand 00:03:21.35\00:03:24.65 the work the God is doing here. 00:03:24.68\00:03:26.82 These clinics are an opportunity for the people 00:03:26.85\00:03:28.99 in the village to see Jesus. 00:03:29.02\00:03:31.41 The work here is plentiful and the Mengino clinic 00:03:31.44\00:03:33.68 struggles to tend to the high demand 00:03:33.71\00:03:35.68 of those seeking medical attention. 00:03:35.71\00:03:38.33 The Mengino clinic is just one example 00:03:38.36\00:03:40.25 of the clinics through out the South Pacific region. 00:03:40.28\00:03:43.28 Other clinics in Papua New Guinea 00:03:43.31\00:03:44.82 in the small island of Tanna face the same challenge everyday 00:03:44.85\00:03:49.37 as you can see this is a big challenge here. 00:03:49.40\00:03:53.33 This quarter a portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering 00:03:53.36\00:03:56.69 will go to help build remote medical clinics in areas 00:03:56.72\00:03:59.56 where people are in great need. 00:03:59.59\00:04:02.15 These clinics will help hundreds of people 00:04:02.18\00:04:03.91 through out the South Pacific region. 00:04:03.94\00:04:06.46 Please pray for the work being done here and thank you, 00:04:06.49\00:04:09.67 for your support of mission. 00:04:09.70\00:04:14.54 My guest is Nancy Kyte who is a colleague of mine 00:04:20.71\00:04:23.58 from the office of Adventist Mission at the Adventist 00:04:23.61\00:04:26.13 world headquarters and Nancy Kyte 00:04:26.16\00:04:28.27 is marketing for Adventist Mission. 00:04:28.30\00:04:29.82 Welcome, Nancy. 00:04:29.85\00:04:30.88 Thank you, Gary. 00:04:30.91\00:04:31.96 Now, before we start talking about Thailand, 00:04:31.99\00:04:34.80 you are the recent author of a cookbook entitled-- 00:04:34.83\00:04:38.69 A Taste of Travel. A Taste of Travel. 00:04:38.72\00:04:40.95 Now this is exclusively soups and stews 00:04:40.98\00:04:46.24 from how many countries? 00:04:46.27\00:04:47.34 For more than a 130, they are all vegetarian. 00:04:47.38\00:04:49.88 Now I have to ask you, what motivated 00:04:49.91\00:04:52.77 you to do cook book from a 130 countries of the world? 00:04:52.80\00:04:56.10 Well, I have to say that I had the idea had its beginnings 00:04:56.13\00:04:59.49 even back when I was a little girl. 00:04:59.52\00:05:01.32 Basically I loved the mission stories at Sabbath school 00:05:01.35\00:05:04.66 and that's something that I have carried 00:05:04.69\00:05:06.07 with me all my life and now it's, 00:05:06.10\00:05:08.14 I have just kind of turned that into a cook book. 00:05:08.17\00:05:10.52 Fantastic. Well, I will talk a little bit 00:05:10.55\00:05:12.32 more about that later. Okay. 00:05:12.35\00:05:13.97 Let's go to Bangkok, Thailand 00:05:14.00\00:05:15.77 one of the world largest cities and for several years 00:05:15.80\00:05:19.18 now Global Mission has been focusing on church planting 00:05:19.21\00:05:22.24 in the city because it has presence there for more than 00:05:22.27\00:05:24.82 a hundred years but only a handful of believers. 00:05:24.85\00:05:27.04 What did you find when you visited there? 00:05:27.07\00:05:29.70 Well, first of all I found out that the Global Mission pioneers 00:05:29.73\00:05:32.64 are very busy and not only are they busy 00:05:32.67\00:05:35.62 they are well liked by the people they associate with. 00:05:35.65\00:05:39.23 Okay, I am going to stop you there. 00:05:39.26\00:05:40.65 Global Mission pioneers define for me what a pioneer is? 00:05:40.68\00:05:43.57 A pioneer is a person who works in his or her own culture. 00:05:43.60\00:05:48.44 They work frontline. 00:05:48.47\00:05:49.84 This is not a-- a missionary type of situation. 00:05:49.87\00:05:53.27 Although they go into areas 00:05:53.30\00:05:54.45 where there is no Christian presence. 00:05:54.48\00:05:56.51 Right and so the church planting. 00:05:56.54\00:05:58.29 Exactly Because you met 00:05:58.32\00:05:59.82 some of these pioneers and some of the people 00:05:59.85\00:06:02.51 had been working with? 00:06:02.54\00:06:03.64 Yes, and you know, it's a blessing 00:06:03.67\00:06:06.37 to me some of the pioneers because we see how inspired 00:06:06.40\00:06:09.25 they are but this time we had a chance to meet 00:06:09.28\00:06:11.18 some of the people that they have gotten to know first hand 00:06:11.21\00:06:14.49 and its exciting to see how their work 00:06:14.52\00:06:18.22 has made such a difference. 00:06:18.25\00:06:20.12 I met a lady by the name Effan and she her husband 00:06:20.15\00:06:26.53 was very ill and so they had to move away from their small town 00:06:26.56\00:06:30.69 they moved towards the outskirts of Bangkok 00:06:30.72\00:06:33.09 so that they can be near the veterans hospital. 00:06:33.12\00:06:35.89 And so while he was getting care there they were forced to live 00:06:35.92\00:06:39.90 or I shouldn't say force but economically 00:06:39.93\00:06:42.32 they had to live in an area that was, that was affordable. 00:06:42.35\00:06:45.51 So they lived in a slum area 00:06:45.54\00:06:47.68 she was able to find a place to live. 00:06:47.71\00:06:49.77 Her husband was admitted to the hospital 00:06:49.80\00:06:52.04 for a long term care. 00:06:52.07\00:06:53.53 While she was living at this village, 00:06:53.56\00:06:57.58 there was a rice distribution program sponsored by the church 00:06:57.61\00:07:01.09 and so she showed up on the day that the rice 00:07:01.12\00:07:03.69 was going to be distributed to pick her allotment. 00:07:03.72\00:07:06.68 And there on the table along side the rice she spotted 00:07:06.71\00:07:11.32 a picture it was picture of the Ten Commandments. 00:07:11.35\00:07:15.13 Mosses receiving the Ten Commandments, 00:07:15.16\00:07:17.22 and that immediately resonated with her because back 00:07:17.25\00:07:20.07 when she was 13 years old she saw 00:07:20.10\00:07:22.37 an old Hollywood movie called the Ten Commandments. 00:07:22.40\00:07:24.72 Oh, well. And she had never really 00:07:24.75\00:07:26.71 had an opportunity to learn how to read very well 00:07:26.74\00:07:29.81 and so she was very visually oriented. 00:07:29.84\00:07:34.04 So she saw the picture of the Ten Commandments 00:07:34.07\00:07:36.06 and she asked what it was all about and they told her 00:07:36.09\00:07:38.83 that there were Bible lessons being taught at the preschool 00:07:38.86\00:07:42.21 in the evenings after, after the classes were shut down. 00:07:42.24\00:07:45.81 So she immediate wanted to go to these classes 00:07:45.84\00:07:49.35 and learn more about these pictures 00:07:49.38\00:07:51.21 and they had a picture rolls there. 00:07:51.24\00:07:53.30 We sometimes thing there is no place for picture rolls 00:07:53.33\00:07:55.90 anymore but for certain places its, 00:07:55.93\00:07:58.93 its extremely appropriate. 00:07:58.96\00:08:00.95 So she went, she loved the stories, 00:08:00.98\00:08:03.32 she got to know the pastor and some of the church members, 00:08:03.35\00:08:06.47 the Global Mission pioneers that would come. 00:08:06.50\00:08:08.53 And she began to learn more about the Bible 00:08:08.56\00:08:13.35 and her faith began to grow at the same time 00:08:13.38\00:08:16.68 her husband's health started to weaken 00:08:16.71\00:08:18.64 and because they weren't near any family 00:08:18.67\00:08:20.76 they had to travel and relocate to be near this hospital. 00:08:20.79\00:08:24.79 She was really struggling. 00:08:24.82\00:08:26.79 And medicine that she-- herself needed 00:08:26.82\00:08:29.07 often would cost a day's wages. 00:08:29.10\00:08:31.62 So she was starting to fell little overwhelmed. 00:08:31.65\00:08:35.22 So the pastor and the pioneer and the church members 00:08:35.25\00:08:38.55 began to go with her to the hospital 00:08:38.58\00:08:40.76 and visit her husband. 00:08:40.79\00:08:41.87 They began to care for him, visit with him, support her 00:08:41.90\00:08:45.86 emotionally and to even helped her with some of her cost 00:08:45.89\00:08:49.78 for medicine and so on. 00:08:49.81\00:08:51.91 So they were able to help her in a very practical way 00:08:51.94\00:08:55.28 and then when her children that last were able to afford 00:08:55.32\00:08:58.10 the trip to Bangkok to see how their father was doing, 00:08:58.13\00:09:02.20 they were comforted-- comforted--comforted because 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.72 the Christians in the neighborhood 00:09:05.75\00:09:07.70 were helping their mother and they felt relieved 00:09:07.73\00:09:10.14 to it that she was being cared for. 00:09:10.17\00:09:13.28 So that was one of the ladies that I met. 00:09:13.31\00:09:15.51 Very nice, you got another story for me. 00:09:15.54\00:09:17.71 I do. Good. 00:09:17.74\00:09:19.22 This lady Effan became baptized just in the spring of last year. 00:09:19.25\00:09:23.47 And then when she would sit out 00:09:23.50\00:09:25.23 in front of her house on a little plastic chair 00:09:25.26\00:09:27.43 she would started to chat with some of the neighbors 00:09:27.46\00:09:29.82 and she made a friend called Fallon Wong another lady 00:09:29.85\00:09:33.78 who lived in the neighborhood. 00:09:33.81\00:09:35.24 And you know they would chat as neighbors 00:09:35.27\00:09:37.86 do and I had a chance to meet this lady 00:09:37.89\00:09:41.20 and talk with her a little bit. 00:09:41.23\00:09:43.23 She shared how she came from a very poor family 00:09:43.26\00:09:46.31 from the country side and her job 00:09:46.34\00:09:49.24 growing up was to her-- the cattle 00:09:49.27\00:09:51.07 that her family owned. 00:09:51.10\00:09:52.62 She didn't have a chance to ever go to school 00:09:52.65\00:09:54.98 so she also did not have a chance to read 00:09:55.01\00:09:57.76 but she would chat with her friend Effan and Effan 00:09:57.79\00:10:01.53 would tell about these wonderful stories she was hearing 00:10:01.56\00:10:03.99 and these pictures that she was also seeing. 00:10:04.02\00:10:07.15 So Fallon Wong also decided to go these meetings 00:10:07.18\00:10:10.55 that were held at the preschool. 00:10:10.58\00:10:12.11 And I asked her I said what really made 00:10:12.14\00:10:16.02 you want to take these Bible classes 00:10:16.05\00:10:19.14 and learn more about spiritual things? 00:10:19.17\00:10:21.90 And right away she said I was concerned about eternal life. 00:10:21.93\00:10:25.55 So she was very afraid what would happen 00:10:25.58\00:10:28.01 to me when I died. 00:10:28.04\00:10:29.30 And so when I went to these Bible classes 00:10:29.34\00:10:32.47 I started to learn that God has a place for me 00:10:32.50\00:10:34.97 and when my time comes I had a place to be when God 00:10:35.00\00:10:40.33 resurrects me, I have a place to be there 00:10:40.36\00:10:42.63 where I will be happy. 00:10:42.66\00:10:43.87 I have friends there and I will be looked after. 00:10:43.90\00:10:45.90 Fantastic To her that was extremely 00:10:45.93\00:10:48.33 important and she was baptized just one month ago. 00:10:48.36\00:10:51.21 Fantastic, Nancy, thank you so much. 00:10:51.24\00:10:53.34 We could listen to more stories. 00:10:53.37\00:10:55.23 Next time. Yeah, those at home thank you 00:10:55.26\00:10:57.59 so much for your continuing support for Global Mission 00:10:57.62\00:11:00.76 pioneers around the world they need your prayers. 00:11:00.79\00:11:03.71 My guest is Dr. David Trim, an historian 00:11:36.31\00:11:39.23 who is the director of Archives, Statistics, and Research 00:11:39.26\00:11:43.53 for the Seventh-day Adventists church based 00:11:43.56\00:11:45.47 at the world head quarters in Washington D.C. 00:11:45.50\00:11:48.09 Dr. Trim, thank you very much for joining me. 00:11:48.12\00:11:49.95 It's a pleasure to be with you again, Gary. 00:11:49.98\00:11:51.57 Today we are going to be talking about the Middle East. 00:11:51.60\00:11:54.19 Yes. Now the Seventh-day Adventists 00:11:54.22\00:11:56.62 churches had a presence there for how long? 00:11:56.65\00:11:59.30 Since, well the first missionaries they were 1879 00:11:59.33\00:12:02.82 they leave in 1882 and don't go back 00:12:02.85\00:12:05.66 again until about 1890. 00:12:05.69\00:12:07.50 And so we have roughly a 120 years 00:12:07.53\00:12:09.40 of constant presence in the Middle East and sadly 00:12:09.43\00:12:13.87 we don't have a huge amount at the end to show for that. 00:12:13.90\00:12:16.44 We earn quite a lot of property and a quite number of buildings, 00:12:16.47\00:12:20.17 unfortunately we don't have the people to fill them 00:12:20.20\00:12:22.98 and I think we have to be honest about that and say 00:12:23.01\00:12:25.10 this is an area where we have to do better. 00:12:25.13\00:12:27.72 This is an area with 250 million people 00:12:27.75\00:12:31.29 and most of them have never even heard of Jesus. 00:12:31.32\00:12:34.22 Much less of the Seventh-day Adventists church 00:12:34.25\00:12:36.13 because it's such a heavily Islamic area. 00:12:36.16\00:12:39.30 Now, David, recently the Adventist church 00:12:39.33\00:12:43.14 has done some restructuring organizationally 00:12:43.17\00:12:46.67 and to help us being more effective in, 00:12:46.70\00:12:49.45 in this area of the world, what's, what is being done? 00:12:49.48\00:12:52.82 Well previously Gary, various parts of North Africa 00:12:52.85\00:12:56.14 and the Middle East were divided amongst 00:12:56.17\00:12:58.35 several of that world divisions but historically 00:12:58.38\00:13:01.73 they had been once Middle East Division 00:13:01.76\00:13:03.55 and some of your viewers may remember 00:13:03.58\00:13:05.07 that from Sabbath school lessons in 13th Sabbath 00:13:05.10\00:13:07.37 since they held in the past, 00:13:07.40\00:13:08.67 there was a Middle East division from 1950 to 1970. 00:13:08.70\00:13:12.04 And when we looked at it historically 00:13:12.07\00:13:14.64 we realize that the church had done best in the Middle East 00:13:14.67\00:13:17.78 when the whole of the Middle East was under 00:13:17.81\00:13:20.97 one structure that could operate very strategically with planning 00:13:21.00\00:13:24.37 for dealing within a area that has you know, 00:13:24.40\00:13:26.92 the same language almost across in Arabic the same culture, 00:13:26.95\00:13:31.89 the same predominant religion and so there is the realization 00:13:31.92\00:13:35.45 that probably the decision in the Middle East division 00:13:35.48\00:13:37.69 in 1970 had been the wrong one and we should go back 00:13:37.72\00:13:40.67 to having all that territory dealt with as a unit. 00:13:40.70\00:13:44.36 And so that was what was done. 00:13:44.39\00:13:46.17 All of North Africa, all of the Middle East 00:13:46.20\00:13:51.44 including Turkey and Iran 00:13:51.47\00:13:52.91 which had been in separate areas, 00:13:52.94\00:13:54.22 these are all been put together now. 00:13:54.25\00:13:56.86 And I think you know that we-- we hope into pray 00:13:56.89\00:14:01.59 but I think there is reason to be optimistic for the future. 00:14:01.62\00:14:05.21 Now, this new union Middle East North Africa union. 00:14:05.24\00:14:08.50 Yes I saw some plans 00:14:08.53\00:14:11.48 that they have sent into head quarters, 00:14:11.51\00:14:13.23 well they have a very ambitious goal to start for example, 00:14:13.26\00:14:16.21 dozens of urban centers of influence 00:14:16.24\00:14:19.19 where they can serve the needs of the community. 00:14:19.22\00:14:23.85 They have sent out a very intentional plan. 00:14:23.88\00:14:26.14 Yes, and I think that's one reason we can be optimistic, 00:14:26.17\00:14:29.53 but you know again this in some way 00:14:29.56\00:14:30.93 is learning from the lessons of history. 00:14:30.96\00:14:32.91 Yeah When the church in Egypt 00:14:32.94\00:14:35.24 first started to grow it's under the leadership 00:14:35.27\00:14:37.16 of a missionary called George Keough 00:14:37.19\00:14:39.38 who very emphasized that you have to connect 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.69 with people and meet their needs. 00:14:41.72\00:14:43.13 You couldn't go to them and tell them 00:14:43.16\00:14:44.45 what their needs were accepting the sense of need in Jesus, 00:14:44.48\00:14:47.90 we are obviously beyond that. 00:14:47.93\00:14:50.00 And it was about connecting with them and helping them 00:14:50.03\00:14:53.17 in their lives and when people saw that the missionaries 00:14:53.20\00:14:57.02 were genuine wanting to be you know, 00:14:57.05\00:14:58.88 to be part of their lives. 00:14:58.91\00:15:00.12 You know I talked to Egyptians who can remember missionaries 00:15:00.15\00:15:03.44 of the 50s who went out into the fields with them 00:15:03.47\00:15:05.97 to help them grow their crops. 00:15:06.00\00:15:07.51 Europeans never did that because Europeans and Americans 00:15:07.54\00:15:10.41 of that time were arrogant. 00:15:10.44\00:15:11.76 And that made a huge impact that people still remember 00:15:11.79\00:15:15.02 that was that why they become baptized. 00:15:15.05\00:15:17.01 So this is that lesson but then we also, 00:15:17.04\00:15:19.17 you know in the 60's there was a man called Robert Darnell, 00:15:19.20\00:15:22.73 who was passionate about mission and the church 00:15:22.76\00:15:25.71 the Middle East division paid for him to do a PhD on Islam 00:15:25.74\00:15:29.81 and he traveled around the whole region 00:15:29.84\00:15:32.04 investigating the history, the culture and he identified 00:15:32.07\00:15:36.43 a series of methods that he believed 00:15:36.46\00:15:38.33 would be more effective. 00:15:38.36\00:15:40.18 And it was a recognition Gary, that you can't go into a large 00:15:40.21\00:15:44.29 Muslim city in the Middle East and conduct public evangelism 00:15:44.32\00:15:47.77 in the way that you would in North America. 00:15:47.80\00:15:50.36 It was a recognition that if you want to talk to Muslims, 00:15:50.39\00:15:53.05 to make friends with them, you have to be sensitive, 00:15:53.08\00:15:55.68 you know, you have to be sensitive to peoples ideas 00:15:55.71\00:15:59.72 and the way they brought up where ever you go. 00:15:59.75\00:16:01.83 And so it wasn't the matter of saying where on you are going 00:16:01.86\00:16:05.36 to talk to other Christians which is sometimes 00:16:05.39\00:16:07.96 been our history in the Middle East. 00:16:07.99\00:16:09.10 We have to be honest you know sometimes in the past 00:16:09.13\00:16:11.18 we concentrated on trying to convert people 00:16:11.21\00:16:14.05 from the native Christian churches to Adventism 00:16:14.08\00:16:16.87 and that's we are introducing into a fuller and richer form 00:16:16.90\00:16:20.73 of Christianity of course a truer form. 00:16:20.76\00:16:23.04 But these people were already Christians 00:16:23.07\00:16:25.04 and we were not breaching not--we were not even 00:16:25.07\00:16:28.21 talking very often to Muslims. 00:16:28.24\00:16:29.90 And so that was where Darnell he said here are methods 00:16:29.93\00:16:32.99 that we could use to talk to Muslims to make friends 00:16:33.02\00:16:35.92 so that we can be witnessing to everyone in that vast region. 00:16:35.95\00:16:40.12 Yeah, so he was a very creative person. 00:16:40.15\00:16:42.19 Darnell was an exceptionally creative person 00:16:42.22\00:16:44.24 and you know in the GC archives in Washington 00:16:44.27\00:16:47.33 which I have the privilege to direct. 00:16:47.36\00:16:48.81 We have some of the documents that he created. 00:16:48.84\00:16:51.07 A book of sermons, a book of sample sermons 00:16:51.10\00:16:54.13 that were sort of sensitive to the--the context 00:16:54.16\00:16:57.47 which any pastor could use to preach. 00:16:57.50\00:17:00.34 You know trying to give resources 00:17:00.37\00:17:02.00 in that way and unfortunately 00:17:02.03\00:17:05.88 for various reasons the church sort of lost sighted 00:17:05.91\00:17:08.99 some of those methods that he pioneered in the mid 70's 00:17:09.02\00:17:12.73 and I think its really fruitful that we are reengaging 00:17:12.76\00:17:15.87 of that and rediscovering it. 00:17:15.90\00:17:17.31 Yeah, I think when we look at the Global Mission 00:17:17.34\00:17:19.69 study centers today I think they have inherited 00:17:19.72\00:17:22.14 some of that tradition of local Contextualization 00:17:22.17\00:17:25.93 talking to people in their language. 00:17:25.96\00:17:27.51 I think that's right, Gary, and you can trace 00:17:27.54\00:17:29.67 that very directly in that Darnell certainly 00:17:29.70\00:17:32.73 knew and influenced men like Borge Schantz Whitehouse 00:17:32.76\00:17:36.53 and several who were directors 00:17:36.56\00:17:37.60 of the Centre for Islamic Studies, its founded. 00:17:37.63\00:17:42.69 But I think you are right there is a wider inheritance 00:17:42.72\00:17:45.81 as well of that concert. 00:17:45.84\00:17:47.92 In some parts of the world you can just stand up the front 00:17:47.96\00:17:50.69 and preach your people and in other places 00:17:50.72\00:17:52.92 that isn't going to work, so you don't give up though. 00:17:52.95\00:17:55.38 You find ways of talking to people connecting with them 00:17:55.41\00:17:58.42 and telling them about Jesus Christ. 00:17:58.45\00:18:00.28 David, thank you so much. 00:18:00.31\00:18:01.47 It's a pleasure, Gary. 00:18:01.50\00:18:02.65 I wish we had a lot more time to talk to Dr. Trim 00:18:02.68\00:18:05.06 but our history as Seventh-day Adventists is very rich. 00:18:05.09\00:18:09.36 We draw from the tradition of Christianity in general plus 00:18:09.39\00:18:12.86 our own particular history and we pray that God 00:18:12.89\00:18:15.78 will continue to give us fresh methods to touch people for Him. 00:18:15.81\00:18:19.79 This is Alexander. 00:18:27.79\00:18:29.76 He serves as the head of elder of the Tomsk 00:18:29.79\00:18:32.57 Seventh-day Adventist church in Serbia, Russia. 00:18:32.60\00:18:35.74 Alexander loves to help lead the small group of believers, 00:18:35.77\00:18:39.32 every Sabbath they meet in a small house church 00:18:39.35\00:18:43.48 down the back alley on the outskirts of town. 00:18:43.51\00:18:46.85 More than a 120 people pack into a room 00:18:46.88\00:18:50.16 not much bigger than a living room. 00:18:50.19\00:18:52.24 They read the Bible, studying God's word 00:18:52.27\00:18:55.56 as they grow closer to Jesus. 00:18:55.59\00:18:57.95 Many members in congregation has seen tremendous 00:18:57.98\00:19:01.21 changes takes place in their lives. 00:19:01.24\00:19:03.42 But none has created an impact as the change 00:19:03.45\00:19:07.24 that took place in Alexander's. 00:19:07.27\00:19:09.32 (Speaking in Foreign language) 00:19:12.28\00:19:14.07 For the first five years of my marriage every thing 00:19:14.10\00:19:16.72 was fine with my husband, 00:19:16.75\00:19:18.77 but then he started to drink alcohol. 00:19:18.80\00:19:23.31 It caused some problems in our family 00:19:23.34\00:19:25.40 because I didn't like his constant drinking 00:19:25.43\00:19:28.31 and he was not a good example for his young sons. 00:19:28.34\00:19:31.73 And I didn't want them to start doing the same thing. 00:19:31.76\00:19:35.13 (Speaking in Foreign language) 00:19:36.56\00:19:39.42 I grew up in a small village and when I received a job 00:19:39.45\00:19:42.77 working for the communist government I was very proud. 00:19:42.80\00:19:47.39 Then when communism fell I lost my place. 00:19:47.42\00:19:51.39 My pride was gone and I became depressed 00:19:51.42\00:19:54.31 I started to drink heavily. 00:19:54.34\00:19:58.75 One day I decided to kneel down on the floor 00:19:58.78\00:20:01.92 of my apartment and I was crying out to God saying 00:20:01.95\00:20:05.98 if you truly exist then help me. 00:20:06.01\00:20:09.08 You know what is happening with my family. 00:20:09.11\00:20:12.73 A few days later I was given a flyer 00:20:12.76\00:20:15.20 for an evangelistic meeting that was taking place soon. 00:20:15.23\00:20:20.60 The flyer said that if you had any family problems 00:20:20.63\00:20:24.24 do come to the meeting. 00:20:24.27\00:20:26.65 I decided to go because I was praying 00:20:26.68\00:20:29.65 that this was the solutions to all my problems. 00:20:29.68\00:20:34.84 Lubov attended the meetings and soon became 00:20:34.87\00:20:37.76 a member of the Seventh-day Adventists church in Tomsk. 00:20:37.79\00:20:40.58 Alexander didn't like this and he knew 00:20:40.61\00:20:43.89 how to handle the problem. 00:20:43.92\00:20:46.30 (Speaking in Foreign language) 00:20:46.33\00:20:49.03 I was going to save my wife. 00:20:49.06\00:20:51.08 I went to the church to cause a problem 00:20:51.11\00:20:53.80 but when I arrived I was shocked. 00:20:53.83\00:20:56.42 The members were rejoicing that I was there 00:20:56.45\00:20:59.94 and I didn't know what to think. 00:20:59.97\00:21:05.82 I came there as an enemy, I came to create a war 00:21:05.85\00:21:09.51 but God showed me his love through those brothers 00:21:09.54\00:21:13.74 and sisters in the church. 00:21:13.77\00:21:15.79 I decided that I need to follow this lifestyle like my wife. 00:21:15.82\00:21:21.60 Alexander was baptized, and today 00:21:21.63\00:21:24.38 he and Lubov live in a loving Christian home. 00:21:24.41\00:21:27.96 What was once a place poisoned by depression 00:21:27.99\00:21:30.55 and alcohol became a place of love and peace. 00:21:30.58\00:21:35.42 A portion of your mission offerings will go to build 00:21:35.45\00:21:38.90 a new church for Alexander, Lubov and their fellow 00:21:38.93\00:21:42.45 Seventh-day Adventists in Tomsk. 00:21:42.48\00:21:44.54 Their lives were changed and now you have the opportunity 00:21:44.57\00:21:48.41 to help them change the lives of others 00:21:48.44\00:21:50.97 who are searching for peace and love. 00:21:51.00\00:21:53.39 Please pray for our fellow Adventists in Tomsk. 00:21:53.42\00:21:57.63 Please think of them when you are faithfully 00:21:57.66\00:21:59.85 giving your mission offerings. 00:21:59.88\00:22:01.74 Trust in the Lord 00:23:01.47\00:23:02.79 with all your heart 00:23:02.82\00:23:06.92 And lean not on your own understanding 00:23:06.95\00:23:12.52 In all your ways acknowledge Him 00:23:12.55\00:23:17.92 He shall direct your paths 00:23:17.95\00:23:23.75 Do not be wise in your own eyes 00:23:23.78\00:23:29.38 Fear the Lord and depart from evil 00:23:29.41\00:23:35.12 It will be health to your flesh 00:23:35.15\00:23:40.24 And it will be strength to your bones. 00:23:40.27\00:23:46.31 Honor the Lord 00:23:46.34\00:23:51.44 Honor the Lord 00:23:51.47\00:23:53.19 With all you have to offer 00:23:53.22\00:23:59.59 Even small 00:23:59.62\00:24:02.95 Even small 00:24:02.98\00:24:04.79 Is enough to bring honor 00:24:04.82\00:24:10.84 Trust in the Lord with all your heart 00:24:35.84\00:24:40.12 And lean not on your own understanding 00:24:40.15\00:24:44.50 In all your ways acknowledge Him 00:24:44.53\00:24:49.26 He shall direct your paths 00:24:49.29\00:24:53.83 Do not be wise in your own eyes 00:24:53.86\00:24:58.40 Fear the Lord and depart from evil 00:24:58.43\00:25:02.85 It will be health to your flesh 00:25:02.88\00:25:07.34 And it will be strength to your bones 00:25:07.37\00:25:14.96 Honor the Lord 00:25:14.99\00:25:17.74 Honor the Lord 00:25:17.77\00:25:19.52 With all you have to offer 00:25:19.55\00:25:25.71 Even small 00:25:25.74\00:25:28.57 Even small 00:25:28.60\00:25:30.27 Is enough to bring honor 00:25:30.30\00:25:36.58 Honor the Lord 00:25:36.61\00:25:39.21 Honor the Lord 00:25:39.24\00:25:41.15 With your humble service 00:25:41.18\00:25:47.59 Honor the Lord 00:25:47.62\00:25:50.23 Honor the Lord 00:25:50.26\00:25:52.05 This is your purpose 00:25:52.08\00:25:57.46 Well, I hope you have enjoyed the program today. 00:26:30.06\00:26:32.16 One of our guests
