A small Adventist Church in China, 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.87 Mission in the South Pacific Islands 00:00:02.90\00:00:04.97 and Elder Mike Ryan, the father of the Global Mission 00:00:05.00\00:00:08.39 all coming up next right here on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:08.42\00:00:12.01 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:23.57\00:00:26.10 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:26.13\00:00:28.97 He gave us a mission. 00:00:29.00\00:00:31.88 Jesus said, "Go. 00:00:31.91\00:00:34.23 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:34.26\00:00:39.16 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:39.19\00:00:43.18 Hello, I'm Gary Krause 00:00:48.12\00:00:49.50 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:49.53\00:00:52.17 Today, we'll be learning more about the challenges 00:00:52.20\00:00:54.30 and needs of mission in Papua New Guinea 00:00:54.33\00:00:57.38 and we'll be talking with Nancy Kyte 00:00:57.41\00:00:58.93 about Global Mission pioneers. 00:00:58.96\00:01:01.68 We'll also be talking with 00:01:01.71\00:01:02.74 Mike Ryan, a general vice president 00:01:02.77\00:01:04.98 at Seventh-day Adventist World Headquarters 00:01:05.01\00:01:07.40 and the first director of Global Mission. 00:01:07.43\00:01:10.34 But first up, lets' go to China 00:01:10.37\00:01:12.51 and meet a woman who helped a new group of Adventists, 00:01:12.54\00:01:15.79 have a church where they could worship. 00:01:15.82\00:01:18.19 Here in the heart of China, here in the heart of this city, 00:01:21.09\00:01:24.52 is a small Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:01:24.55\00:01:27.87 Just 10 years ago, there was no Adventist church. 00:01:27.90\00:01:31.15 There were no Seventh-day Adventists. 00:01:31.18\00:01:33.95 That's when Mrs. Fan came to the city as a church planter 00:01:33.98\00:01:37.12 to start a new group of believers. 00:01:37.15\00:01:40.05 Mrs. Fan tells how she was looking for a place to stay 00:01:40.08\00:01:42.67 when she first came to the city. 00:01:42.70\00:01:44.77 Someone sent her to Popo Daus. 00:01:44.80\00:01:47.44 Popo or Grandma Daus had a room that Mrs. Fan could rent. 00:01:47.47\00:01:52.55 Before long Mrs. Fan had a small group 00:01:52.58\00:01:55.23 studying the Bible and Popo Daus was one of them. 00:01:55.26\00:01:58.42 As they studied she gave her heart to Jesus 00:01:58.45\00:02:00.82 and joined the fledgling church. 00:02:00.85\00:02:03.28 She left them build a small church on her family's property. 00:02:03.31\00:02:06.51 But her husband wasn't ready to sign over the land. 00:02:06.54\00:02:10.62 Mrs. Fan tells how one day she was walking down the street 00:02:10.65\00:02:13.32 when she saw that there had been accident. 00:02:13.35\00:02:16.02 When she got closer she saw Popo Daus 00:02:16.05\00:02:18.33 lying on the street in a pool of blood. 00:02:18.36\00:02:21.03 They rushed her to the hospital where the doctors said 00:02:21.06\00:02:23.06 she wasn't going to make it through the night. 00:02:23.09\00:02:26.10 So the church members held an 00:02:26.13\00:02:27.44 all night prayer vigil for Popo Daus. 00:02:27.47\00:02:30.56 They cared about Popo Daus, but they also knew that 00:02:30.59\00:02:32.95 if anything happened to her they might lose their church. 00:02:32.98\00:02:36.25 Popo Daus got well and when she did she and her husband 00:02:36.28\00:02:39.20 signed over the land to the church. 00:02:39.23\00:02:42.41 Today Popo Daus is 79 and still worshipping 00:02:42.44\00:02:45.69 in the church she help build. 00:02:45.72\00:02:48.11 And sister Fan, she went on to plant 00:02:48.14\00:02:50.57 the other churches in other areas. 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.37 If you would like to learn more about how you can help, 00:02:53.40\00:02:56.16 plant new churches in un-entered areas. 00:02:56.19\00:02:59.17 Visit global-mission.org. 00:02:59.20\00:03:02.02 When global mission was established by the worlds 00:03:13.71\00:03:16.16 Seventh-day Adventist church in 1990 00:03:16.19\00:03:19.11 there was six million Adventists-- 00:03:19.14\00:03:21.09 baptized Adventists, believers around the world. 00:03:21.12\00:03:24.10 Today, that's around 17 million. 00:03:24.13\00:03:25.94 So we can praise God for tremendous growth. 00:03:25.97\00:03:28.76 But we still have challenges that are facing us 00:03:28.79\00:03:31.27 and I'm delighted to welcome 00:03:31.30\00:03:33.50 Elder Mike Ryan to our program. 00:03:33.53\00:03:35.35 Thanks for joining us, Mike. It's a privilege to be here. 00:03:35.38\00:03:37.80 Mike, you were the first director of Global Mission. 00:03:37.83\00:03:40.74 You were there when it first started. 00:03:40.77\00:03:42.12 You were part of the planning. 00:03:42.15\00:03:44.56 When you walked into the General Conference office 00:03:44.59\00:03:46.67 for the first time what sort of a team 00:03:46.70\00:03:49.40 did you have in place to start Global Mission? 00:03:49.43\00:03:52.70 Well, there actually Charles Taylor was there 00:03:52.73\00:03:56.25 and he had done a lot of the original research. 00:03:56.28\00:04:00.12 And Yvonne Dysinger and there were some people 00:04:00.15\00:04:03.87 who were there but in terms of a program 00:04:03.90\00:04:08.59 they really didn't have any program. 00:04:08.62\00:04:10.61 You had funding of course? 00:04:10.64\00:04:12.57 Well, it wasn't a lot of funding either. 00:04:12.60\00:04:15.39 And that was kind of just where we started. 00:04:15.42\00:04:19.04 So we had to be began to, you know, 00:04:19.07\00:04:20.44 envision how it was gonna come together. 00:04:20.47\00:04:22.79 So it's not like you were called in 00:04:22.82\00:04:24.24 to be director of an existing department. 00:04:24.27\00:04:26.62 You were to start a new initiative. 00:04:26.65\00:04:28.97 Yeah, except that it did have very clear guidelines. 00:04:29.00\00:04:32.91 And because when you're starting something like that 00:04:32.94\00:04:36.18 there's lot of people who come in and they say 00:04:36.21\00:04:38.12 we have to do this, you have to do this, 00:04:38.15\00:04:39.78 and it should be that. 00:04:39.81\00:04:41.06 And also you're kind of stepping around 00:04:41.09\00:04:44.09 and there's lot of turf out there. 00:04:44.12\00:04:45.96 But the committee who had established it, 00:04:45.99\00:04:50.20 before I was ever asked to be director, 00:04:50.23\00:04:52.04 they were very clear that Global Mission 00:04:52.07\00:04:56.24 was to establish Seventh-day Adventist congregations 00:04:56.27\00:05:01.26 and churches in place that were un-entered. 00:05:01.29\00:05:03.89 And then they named three-- four major priorities. 00:05:03.92\00:05:08.68 And one at that time 00:05:08.71\00:05:10.03 was the territory of the Soviet Union. 00:05:10.06\00:05:13.42 And of course now it's the former territory 00:05:13.45\00:05:15.36 of the Soviet Union. 00:05:15.39\00:05:16.42 But China, India and the Middle-East, 00:05:16.45\00:05:20.67 and then as each of those territories 00:05:20.70\00:05:24.37 contained big cities those were the priority. 00:05:24.40\00:05:28.67 And it also identified that-- 00:05:28.70\00:05:30.52 we won't just going to talk in terms of geography, 00:05:30.55\00:05:32.46 but also in terms of people groups. Yes. 00:05:32.49\00:05:35.12 So now Mike, 23 years later, has Global Mission being doing 00:05:35.15\00:05:39.27 what it's supposed to be doing? 00:05:39.30\00:05:41.35 You could be candid. 00:05:41.38\00:05:42.41 Yeah. Well, it did the first 13. 00:05:42.44\00:05:46.62 It actually, you know, 00:05:46.65\00:05:48.72 I remember at the General Conference session 00:05:48.75\00:05:51.64 in Indianapolis in 1990 that they stood 00:05:51.67\00:05:55.20 and they announced that for the first time 00:05:55.23\00:05:58.98 in the history of our church 00:05:59.01\00:06:00.31 that we were establishing one new congregation everyday. 00:06:00.34\00:06:05.29 So that was you know, seven a week, you know, do the math. 00:06:05.32\00:06:08.58 And it was kind of thrilling. 00:06:08.61\00:06:10.41 I mean to think that everyday they went by you 00:06:10.44\00:06:12.12 had one new church somewhere in the world. 00:06:12.15\00:06:14.80 And well, Global Mission certainly has not been 00:06:14.83\00:06:21.79 the entity that has finished the work 00:06:21.82\00:06:23.83 because we're still here and I'm sure there are things 00:06:23.86\00:06:26.66 that could have been done better 00:06:26.69\00:06:30.05 and had gone forward, but actually today we established 00:06:30.08\00:06:35.86 maybe about 11 new congregations 00:06:35.89\00:06:38.46 everyday somewhere in the world. 00:06:38.49\00:06:42.00 And so it really has created an awareness 00:06:42.03\00:06:46.70 among our people 00:06:46.73\00:06:49.00 as to the need for church planting 00:06:49.03\00:06:51.30 in these un-entered areas. 00:06:51.33\00:06:52.76 And I think if you really did a comparison 00:06:52.79\00:06:55.46 between the 10x40 window. 00:06:55.49\00:06:56.78 Now that's the real estate between Spain and Morocco 00:06:56.81\00:07:01.43 all the way around to Japan. 00:07:01.46\00:07:03.27 And within that rectangle 00:07:03.30\00:07:05.58 what 65 to 70 percent of the world's population lives 00:07:05.61\00:07:10.43 and in 1990 only about 9 percent 00:07:10.46\00:07:13.04 of Seventh-day Adventists lived there. 00:07:13.07\00:07:15.12 Well, I think if you look at that in the last 22 years 00:07:15.15\00:07:19.34 that probably the growth inside that window 00:07:19.37\00:07:21.87 has been nearly 300 percent, 00:07:21.90\00:07:24.20 whereas if you look outside the window 00:07:24.23\00:07:26.85 that growth probably has been about 130 percent. 00:07:26.88\00:07:29.97 And so I think we've done what they wanted us to do. 00:07:30.00\00:07:34.14 It's just that our wish would have been 00:07:34.17\00:07:36.11 that we could have, you know, multiplied it 10 times. Exactly. 00:07:36.14\00:07:39.13 I think maybe the Lord's probably given us 00:07:39.16\00:07:40.93 about all we can choose sometimes. Yeah. 00:07:40.96\00:07:43.74 Mike, on this program 00:07:43.77\00:07:45.49 we talk a lot about Global Mission Pioneers. 00:07:45.52\00:07:48.62 Before 1993 they didn't exist. How did that get started? 00:07:48.65\00:07:52.65 Well, it actually was an idea that came out of Indonesia. 00:07:52.68\00:07:58.49 They had little workers that went out 00:07:58.52\00:08:00.55 and I happened to be a missionary 00:08:00.58\00:08:01.82 out in that division. 00:08:01.85\00:08:02.88 I saw wow, that really works great. 00:08:02.91\00:08:05.14 Just to take a local people send them after training. 00:08:05.17\00:08:08.76 And so I thought well, let's try this in some places. 00:08:08.79\00:08:11.20 So we just went out 00:08:11.23\00:08:12.72 and negotiated with several divisions 00:08:12.75\00:08:16.65 and they said, yeah, we'll try it. 00:08:16.68\00:08:19.07 And I mean, the thing just exploded 00:08:19.10\00:08:21.10 and went to every division 00:08:21.13\00:08:22.55 because it's a very effective thing to have 00:08:22.58\00:08:25.03 local lay people trained and witnessing. 00:08:25.06\00:08:29.40 Mike, thanks so much for joining us today. 00:08:29.43\00:08:32.52 And viewers at home, Elder Ryan has outlined 00:08:32.55\00:08:35.92 some of the history of Global Mission 00:08:35.95\00:08:37.91 and we praise God for the tremendous 00:08:37.94\00:08:39.43 growth around the world. 00:08:39.46\00:08:41.22 And I think when the history books are written 00:08:41.25\00:08:44.16 they will tell the story of how Global Mission 00:08:44.19\00:08:47.23 helped change the focus of the Church 00:08:47.26\00:08:50.29 to focus on reaching un-entered people groups, 00:08:50.32\00:08:53.11 un-entered territories. 00:08:53.14\00:08:54.75 We think of the thousands of Global Mission pioneers 00:08:54.78\00:08:57.23 working around the world today 00:08:57.26\00:08:58.51 planting new Seventh-day Adventist congregations. 00:08:58.54\00:09:01.80 And I want to thank you again 00:09:01.83\00:09:03.13 for your financial support for pioneers. 00:09:03.16\00:09:05.87 I want to thank you for your prayers 00:09:05.90\00:09:07.31 because church planting can be a very lonely 00:09:07.34\00:09:10.53 and a discouraging job. 00:09:10.56\00:09:12.25 That's very encouraging when pioneers know 00:09:12.28\00:09:14.27 that they have a world church supporting them. 00:09:14.30\00:09:16.93 Please continue to pray 00:09:16.96\00:09:18.11 for Global Mission around the world. 00:09:18.14\00:09:20.08 Some 50 years ago, 00:09:58.09\00:09:59.60 Adventists missionaries spent 40 days 00:09:59.63\00:10:01.76 traversing the rough jungles 00:10:01.79\00:10:03.25 of Papua New Guinea to reach out to people 00:10:03.28\00:10:05.31 who had never before heard the name of Jesus. 00:10:05.34\00:10:08.60 They healed the sick, fed the poor 00:10:08.63\00:10:10.28 and provided spiritual healing to God's children. 00:10:10.31\00:10:13.63 Today this same trip can be done in 15 minutes. 00:10:13.66\00:10:16.80 Thanks to our mission plane 00:10:16.83\00:10:17.98 that was paid for with your mission offerings. 00:10:18.01\00:10:20.56 The mode of transportation may have changed, 00:10:20.59\00:10:23.26 but the message of hope in Jesus is still the same. 00:10:23.29\00:10:26.66 In fulfilling our mandate to start new congregations 00:10:35.28\00:10:39.14 in new geographical areas and among new people groups, 00:10:39.17\00:10:43.11 we work in some areas 00:10:43.14\00:10:44.21 that we can't talk about publicly. 00:10:44.24\00:10:46.81 Today my guest is Nancy Kyte, 00:10:46.84\00:10:48.88 who was the Marketing Director for Adventist Mission, 00:10:48.91\00:10:51.62 works in our office at the Adventist World Headquarters 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.99 in Washington. 00:10:54.02\00:10:55.20 Welcome, Nancy. Thanks, Gary. 00:10:55.23\00:10:56.81 Recently you visited one of these countries 00:10:56.84\00:10:58.84 where we have Global Mission pioneers working. 00:10:58.87\00:11:02.78 But we don't want to name that country 00:11:02.81\00:11:04.90 because we don't want to endanger them 00:11:04.93\00:11:06.98 or some of the people they are working with. 00:11:07.01\00:11:09.50 First of all tell us about 00:11:09.53\00:11:10.59 what a Global Mission pioneer is? 00:11:10.62\00:11:12.89 A Global Mission pioneer works in his or her own culture. 00:11:12.92\00:11:17.28 So there is no having to learn a new language, 00:11:17.31\00:11:20.40 no having to learn new customs, 00:11:20.43\00:11:22.55 they can just fit right in to the new territory 00:11:22.58\00:11:25.34 that they have been assigned. 00:11:25.37\00:11:26.96 And around the world we have thousands of these pioneers. 00:11:26.99\00:11:30.39 They live on a very modest living stipend 00:11:30.42\00:11:33.15 and they follow Jesus example of living 00:11:33.18\00:11:35.75 among the people and working with them. 00:11:35.78\00:11:38.00 So Nancy, you met some of these pioneers 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.80 in this country. I met some of them. 00:11:39.83\00:11:41.84 I met eight or nine of them, 00:11:41.87\00:11:43.77 and I have to say that they were extremely interesting 00:11:43.80\00:11:48.30 and inspiring people to chat with. 00:11:48.33\00:11:51.53 And one thing I did right off the bat, 00:11:51.56\00:11:53.42 I wanted to make sure that they felt 00:11:53.45\00:11:54.80 comfortable in talking with me. 00:11:54.83\00:11:56.30 So I said I'm not going to ask you your real name 00:11:56.33\00:11:59.46 or ask you what province or town you were from. 00:11:59.49\00:12:01.65 So, you know, lets just chat as friends. 00:12:01.68\00:12:04.17 And they were able to open up 00:12:04.20\00:12:05.66 and share little bit about their work. 00:12:05.69\00:12:07.44 Good, tell me a story. 00:12:07.47\00:12:09.91 I heard about a man and his son 00:12:09.94\00:12:12.21 who worked together in a family business. 00:12:12.24\00:12:14.92 They had for decades been chopping down tress 00:12:14.95\00:12:18.96 and turn it into furniture. 00:12:18.99\00:12:21.03 So the son was helping his father one day 00:12:21.06\00:12:23.29 and there was an accident. 00:12:23.32\00:12:24.59 A tree fell over and pinned his father's legs to the ground. 00:12:24.62\00:12:28.57 And the boy was just frantic 00:12:28.60\00:12:30.49 to help get his father's leg freed 00:12:30.52\00:12:32.80 and he remembers digging at the dirt, 00:12:32.83\00:12:36.00 you know, just cloying at the dirt, 00:12:36.03\00:12:37.34 trying to get his leg freed and get him disentangled. 00:12:37.37\00:12:41.75 And was able to do so, 00:12:41.78\00:12:43.43 but his father had a severe injury, 00:12:43.46\00:12:45.40 wasn't life threatening but it was very severe. 00:12:45.43\00:12:48.65 And it really impacted the family financially. 00:12:48.68\00:12:51.57 So the boy determined 00:12:51.60\00:12:52.92 that somehow he would get an education 00:12:52.95\00:12:55.92 so that his father would not have to work so hard. 00:12:55.95\00:12:58.71 They had a very large family. 00:12:58.74\00:13:01.06 And true to his word, the boy as he got a little older 00:13:01.09\00:13:03.98 he kept that education dream in his mind 00:13:04.01\00:13:07.32 and when it came time for him to go to high school 00:13:07.35\00:13:09.81 he got on a bicycle, 00:13:09.84\00:13:12.16 rode his bicycle 100 kilometers 00:13:12.19\00:13:14.45 to a next town that of any size 00:13:14.48\00:13:17.61 and there he was able to find a room to stay 00:13:17.64\00:13:20.36 and while he could attend high school. 00:13:20.39\00:13:23.04 And this room that he rented from this family 00:13:23.07\00:13:25.96 was just kind of on the back porch. 00:13:25.99\00:13:27.59 And he noticed that this family, 00:13:27.62\00:13:29.72 would bow their heads and fold their hands 00:13:29.75\00:13:31.73 before each meal and he kind of wondered about that. 00:13:31.76\00:13:34.21 But you know, it was a very polite distance 00:13:34.24\00:13:36.60 that they had between each other. 00:13:36.63\00:13:40.42 He did well at school 00:13:40.45\00:13:41.48 because he was trained again to keep that dream alive. 00:13:41.51\00:13:44.30 He was going to succeed, 00:13:44.33\00:13:45.36 so his family could have a little more comfortable life. 00:13:45.39\00:13:50.10 Well, eventually there was a school break 00:13:50.13\00:13:51.88 and he decided that he would go back to visit his family 00:13:51.91\00:13:54.96 and so he got on his bicycle again 00:13:54.99\00:13:56.93 and of course, it would take a long time 00:13:56.96\00:13:58.57 to peddle 100 kilometers. 00:13:58.60\00:14:00.38 It was very late at night 00:14:00.41\00:14:02.41 and all of the sudden he became extremely afraid. 00:14:02.44\00:14:07.97 And there is a problem there, 00:14:08.00\00:14:09.55 that they are used to with evil spirits 00:14:09.58\00:14:13.67 and demons and he was extremely afraid of ghosts. 00:14:13.70\00:14:16.27 So here he was dark night, dark road, 00:14:16.30\00:14:19.89 peddling home and he remembered the family 00:14:19.92\00:14:22.58 that he saw folding their hands 00:14:22.61\00:14:24.21 and closing their eyes and thought 00:14:24.24\00:14:26.49 you know, maybe now was the time 00:14:26.52\00:14:28.24 for me to try to pray on my own. 00:14:28.27\00:14:31.24 And in his own way he spoke out, 00:14:31.27\00:14:33.22 he cried out to God and said, God help me please save me, 00:14:33.25\00:14:36.53 protect me and help me get home to see my father. 00:14:36.56\00:14:40.20 And immediately his fear left him 00:14:40.23\00:14:42.50 and he was able to peddle all the way home 00:14:42.53\00:14:44.75 and see his father. 00:14:44.78\00:14:46.32 Well, through a series of providences 00:14:46.35\00:14:48.61 he was able to complete his education. 00:14:48.64\00:14:50.70 He went to the university 00:14:50.73\00:14:52.99 and now he is a Global Mission pioneer and pastor 00:14:53.02\00:14:55.48 and he is serving people in his community 00:14:55.51\00:14:58.56 and he knows that this is exactly 00:14:58.59\00:15:00.39 where God wanted him to be. 00:15:00.42\00:15:03.02 Fantastic. 00:15:03.05\00:15:04.43 It's hard for us in the West to imagine how much people's 00:15:04.46\00:15:08.76 lives are dominated by pleasing the good spirits 00:15:08.79\00:15:12.56 implicating the bad spirits. Exactly. 00:15:12.59\00:15:14.90 There was another lady 00:15:14.93\00:15:16.37 there who was possessed by an evil spirit. 00:15:16.40\00:15:20.21 We just don't really hear that too much 00:15:20.24\00:15:22.21 in our part of the world, but there it's very common. 00:15:22.24\00:15:24.68 And she was extremely frightened. 00:15:24.71\00:15:27.78 Her family and her neighbors were frightened. 00:15:27.81\00:15:29.76 They took her to the hospital. Nothing could be done. 00:15:29.79\00:15:32.82 You know, lab results and blood pressure 00:15:32.85\00:15:34.50 all came out fine. 00:15:34.53\00:15:36.20 But there was this other problem. 00:15:36.23\00:15:38.69 And finally people were brought in to help her. 00:15:38.72\00:15:41.98 They called the pastor. 00:15:42.01\00:15:43.27 You know, usually the Christian is the last resort 00:15:43.30\00:15:45.49 in the situation like that. 00:15:45.52\00:15:47.15 But they had exhausted everything else. 00:15:47.18\00:15:48.91 So they brought the pioneer in, 00:15:48.94\00:15:51.59 asked him to please pray and they did so. 00:15:51.62\00:15:55.03 And he was able to work with this family, 00:15:55.06\00:15:57.69 they were able to destroy the spirit house 00:15:57.72\00:15:59.52 and the idols that were in her house 00:15:59.55\00:16:01.79 and she is fine today. 00:16:01.82\00:16:03.64 And her family is seeing that we serve a God of power. 00:16:03.67\00:16:08.92 Nancy, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:16:08.95\00:16:11.28 My pleasure. 00:16:11.31\00:16:12.43 Around the world today, hundreds of stories like this 00:16:12.46\00:16:16.08 are happening everyday as men and women, 00:16:16.11\00:16:18.77 boys and girls are finding peace through Jesus Christ. 00:16:18.80\00:16:22.62 And Global Mission pioneers are one of the messages 00:16:22.65\00:16:25.77 that God is using to touch lives in a very powerful way. 00:16:25.80\00:16:29.73 Thank you for your continuing prayerful support for pioneers. 00:16:29.76\00:16:34.05 It is making a difference. 00:16:34.08\00:16:35.93 It is helping to plant new congregations among 00:16:35.96\00:16:39.42 new people groups around the world. 00:16:39.45\00:16:41.43 The South Pacific region comprises 18 countries 00:16:50.06\00:16:54.13 including Australia, New Zealand, 00:16:54.16\00:16:56.81 Papua New Guinea and the Islands of the Pacific 00:16:56.84\00:16:59.36 south of the equator. 00:16:59.39\00:17:01.70 This region of the world is home to almost 37 million people. 00:17:01.73\00:17:05.58 And there are currently 00:17:05.61\00:17:08.27 Seventh-day Adventists in the south Pacific region. 00:17:08.30\00:17:10.81 That is approximately one Adventist for every 87 people. 00:17:10.84\00:17:14.31 Majority of Adventists live in the islands, 00:17:17.64\00:17:19.99 while Australia and New Zealand have a ratio of one Adventist 00:17:20.02\00:17:22.88 for about every 400 people. 00:17:22.91\00:17:25.36 Your 13th Sabbath offering this quarter 00:17:25.39\00:17:27.35 will go to three unique projects that will heal, 00:17:27.38\00:17:30.60 teach and reach remote parts of the earth. 00:17:30.63\00:17:34.51 Welcome to Mamusi, 00:17:52.40\00:17:54.01 one of the most remote villages in Papua New Guinea. 00:17:54.04\00:17:57.70 People here live as they have for hundreds of years. 00:17:57.73\00:18:01.08 And we are only able to visit this area by plane. 00:18:01.11\00:18:05.03 There are no roads here through the dense jungle 00:18:05.06\00:18:07.75 on tall mountains of Papua. 00:18:07.78\00:18:09.85 We fly here today to fulfill an important promise. 00:18:09.88\00:18:12.92 You have given me something very precious from your valley 00:18:14.49\00:18:18.08 and I want to promise you today I'm going to give you 00:18:18.11\00:18:21.40 something precious in return. 00:18:21.43\00:18:23.62 When we get the talking Bible I'll come to your village 00:18:23.65\00:18:28.28 and I'll give you and your people, 00:18:28.31\00:18:31.07 a talking Bible so that they can hear 00:18:31.10\00:18:34.09 the word of God in pidgin English 00:18:34.12\00:18:36.93 in their mother tongue for the first time. 00:18:36.96\00:18:39.62 Pastor Gary Kent hosted an Evangelistic meeting 00:18:41.32\00:18:43.83 in Mount Hagen where he was able to preach to approximately 00:18:43.86\00:18:46.74 15,000 people on some nights. 00:18:46.77\00:18:49.75 Many people in Papua learned about Jesus more, 00:18:49.78\00:18:52.28 able to share their new faith with their local communities. 00:18:52.31\00:18:56.31 Among that crowd who attended the event were 160 villagers 00:18:56.34\00:19:00.26 from Mamusi who had traveled over four days 00:19:00.29\00:19:03.65 to listen to the messages. 00:19:03.68\00:19:05.24 When the meetings ended the travelers from Mamusi 00:19:05.27\00:19:07.62 were so amazed with what they had heard. 00:19:07.65\00:19:10.18 The wonderful God of the Bible intrigued and inspired them. 00:19:10.21\00:19:14.16 So before heading home they went to greet the speaker. 00:19:14.19\00:19:17.81 The Chief of Mamusi thanked the pastor 00:19:17.84\00:19:20.00 and gave him a gift of appreciation, 00:19:20.03\00:19:22.60 feathers from a bird of Paradise. 00:19:22.63\00:19:25.61 Now months later the God-pods are brought to the Mamusi. 00:19:25.64\00:19:30.31 Most of them cannot read or speak 00:19:30.34\00:19:31.95 and even if they stumble upon the scared word of God 00:19:31.98\00:19:34.86 they would not be able to understand it. 00:19:34.89\00:19:37.34 You see, they speak pidgin English. 00:19:37.37\00:19:40.35 The God-pods are talking Bible's that the Mamusi's 00:19:40.38\00:19:43.20 and other villagers of Papua New Guinea 00:19:43.23\00:19:45.82 will be able to use to learn the important messages 00:19:45.85\00:19:48.64 that God has left to us to conduct our lives hear on earth 00:19:48.67\00:19:52.09 and to prepare for the day of Jesus soon return. 00:19:52.12\00:19:56.13 The Mamusi's can now listen in their own languages. 00:19:56.16\00:19:59.85 They can share with their friends 00:19:59.88\00:20:01.39 and their God-pods will never run out of battery. 00:20:01.42\00:20:04.29 The talking Bibles are powered by the sun. 00:20:04.32\00:20:08.05 How appropriate, isn't it? 00:20:08.08\00:20:09.92 If our lives are powered by the living Son of God, 00:20:09.95\00:20:12.42 our batteries will never run out as well. 00:20:12.45\00:20:14.91 For He promises us eternal life. 00:20:14.94\00:20:18.22 May God revive His people in Papua New Guinea 00:20:18.25\00:20:20.65 and many places of the world through His living, 00:20:20.68\00:20:22.75 breathing, talking word. 00:20:22.78\00:20:24.55 People in the remote villages of the South Pacific 00:20:30.03\00:20:32.49 are in constant need of medical attention. 00:20:32.52\00:20:35.70 From a simple flu to broken bones, 00:20:35.73\00:20:37.57 pregnancy and malaria some of the villagers 00:20:37.60\00:20:40.45 there can actually go an entire lifetime 00:20:40.48\00:20:42.43 without ever seeing a doctor. 00:20:42.46\00:20:44.66 And some of them die from commonly treated illnesses. 00:20:44.69\00:20:48.31 In Mangino, the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:20:48.34\00:20:50.49 set up a medical clinic to provide care and treatment 00:20:50.52\00:20:53.17 to the local village. 00:20:53.20\00:20:54.90 It is the only clinic within miles. 00:20:54.93\00:20:57.93 Some other people in the neighboring towns 00:20:57.96\00:20:59.61 will travel great distances on foot 00:20:59.64\00:21:01.42 to get basic medical attention of the Mangino clinic. 00:21:01.45\00:21:05.12 Brian Lilley walked here with his parents 00:21:05.15\00:21:07.11 from another village. 00:21:07.14\00:21:08.94 They came in search of treatment for his mother 00:21:08.97\00:21:10.77 who is not feeling well. 00:21:10.80\00:21:12.72 After trekking for hours through the jungle to get there 00:21:12.75\00:21:15.46 this family is very appreciative of the work being done 00:21:15.49\00:21:18.83 and hopes for a clinic in their village some day. 00:21:18.86\00:21:21.54 We have privilege to have SDA mission to come up here 00:21:21.57\00:21:26.98 and set this hospital so that all the people to get around 00:21:27.01\00:21:32.37 the bush places like here. 00:21:32.40\00:21:35.74 And we just coming to take the medicine 00:21:35.77\00:21:39.06 here for what treatment is. 00:21:39.09\00:21:42.56 The work here is plentiful. 00:21:42.59\00:21:44.42 And the Mangino clinic struggles to tend 00:21:44.45\00:21:46.51 to the high demand of those seeking medical attention. 00:21:46.54\00:21:49.66 The Mangino clinic is just one example of the clinics 00:21:49.69\00:21:52.99 throughout the South Pacific region 00:21:53.02\00:21:55.29 and the need for more health posts is great. 00:21:55.32\00:21:59.35 These medical clinics are in effective way 00:21:59.38\00:22:01.13 to treat physical as well as spiritually needs. 00:22:01.16\00:22:04.47 It's an essential service for the communities 00:22:04.50\00:22:06.31 and a sure way to win souls for Jesus. 00:22:06.34\00:22:09.45 Can you imagine not having heard the story 00:22:16.69\00:22:19.15 of Daniel and the den of lions? 00:22:19.18\00:22:21.69 The Ark of Noah and all the marching animals 00:22:21.72\00:22:25.29 or say the supernatural plagues brought on the Egyptians? 00:22:25.32\00:22:29.38 There are so many fascinating lines and events in the Bible. 00:22:29.41\00:22:33.20 They are there for training up a child 00:22:33.23\00:22:34.76 in the way that he should go. 00:22:34.79\00:22:36.71 And the Bible tells us that even in later years 00:22:36.74\00:22:39.23 he will not depart from the ways 00:22:39.26\00:22:40.49 of these precious character lessons. 00:22:40.52\00:22:43.69 In the South Pacific, 00:22:43.72\00:22:44.87 children simply do not have enough Bibles. 00:22:44.90\00:22:47.88 Only one out of ten little ones have access 00:22:47.91\00:22:50.25 to the most fascinating book, the Bible. 00:22:50.28\00:22:54.03 They want it for themselves to learn and to share. 00:22:54.06\00:22:58.19 Imagine the impact that one equipped child 00:22:58.22\00:23:00.03 can make on their family, community, school or church. 00:23:00.06\00:23:03.03 When you pick up your Bible this week, 00:23:05.65\00:23:08.15 remember what a special gift you have been given 00:23:08.18\00:23:11.13 and remember to contribute 00:23:11.16\00:23:12.27 to this quarter's 13th Sabbath offering 00:23:12.30\00:23:14.97 so a child will not grow up without the privilege 00:23:15.00\00:23:17.34 every little one to have. 00:23:17.37\00:23:19.94 This 13th Sabbath offering will go towards these projects. 00:23:19.97\00:23:24.22 We pray you will be a missionary where you are 00:23:24.25\00:23:26.80 and support the mission work 00:23:26.83\00:23:28.17 of the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:23:28.20\00:23:30.71 To learn more about these and other projects
