A special anniversary for Adventist Mission 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.95 in a village of the southeast coast of Africa. 00:00:02.98\00:00:05.97 That and so much more coming up 00:00:06.00\00:00:07.84 right here on "Global Mission Snapshot." 00:00:07.87\00:00:10.58 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:14.99\00:00:17.52 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:17.55\00:00:20.49 He gave us a mission. 00:00:20.52\00:00:23.15 Jesus said, go. 00:00:23.18\00:00:25.63 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:25.66\00:00:30.57 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:30.60\00:00:34.47 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:39.69\00:00:42.21 I'm Gary Krause. On today's program, 00:00:42.24\00:00:44.80 we'll be talking with Nancy Kyte, 00:00:44.83\00:00:46.89 marketing director for the Office of Adventist Mission. 00:00:46.92\00:00:49.86 Nancy recently traveled to the island nation 00:00:49.89\00:00:52.34 of Madagascar 00:00:52.37\00:00:53.88 where she visited a church 00:00:53.91\00:00:55.30 made up of people from an outcast tribe. 00:00:55.33\00:00:58.82 We'll also talk with her about 00:00:58.85\00:01:00.15 something that happened 100 years ago 00:01:00.18\00:01:02.66 that's still impacting mission today. 00:01:02.69\00:01:05.65 The very first 13th Sabbath Offering 00:01:05.68\00:01:08.34 took place in 1912. 00:01:08.37\00:01:11.49 But even before that, 00:01:11.52\00:01:12.55 there was a project that inspired these offerings. 00:01:12.58\00:01:15.75 It was a collection to carry the gospel 00:01:15.78\00:01:18.19 to the descendants of the mutiny 00:01:18.22\00:01:20.17 on the bounty on Pitcairn Island. 00:01:20.20\00:01:23.28 But first, let's head for Siberia. 00:01:23.31\00:01:25.60 I have a friend, her name is Alicia 00:01:28.96\00:01:31.69 and she invited me to this group. 00:01:31.72\00:01:33.36 Sometime ago my house was damaged in a fire. 00:01:38.15\00:01:40.99 And the church helped me rebuilt part of it. 00:01:41.02\00:01:43.22 And I decided that I would like to have 00:01:43.25\00:01:44.82 this house dedicated to God and to serve Him. 00:01:44.85\00:01:47.90 So for the past year, I've been inviting a small group 00:01:47.93\00:01:50.34 to come and meet in my house. 00:01:50.37\00:01:51.73 Alicia lives in a town of Krasnoyarsk, 00:01:54.40\00:01:58.25 deep in the heart of Siberia. 00:01:58.28\00:02:01.03 Life here can be cold 00:02:01.06\00:02:03.10 and for the small number of Seventh-day Adventists 00:02:03.13\00:02:05.53 that make their homes here, 00:02:05.56\00:02:07.39 reaching out to others has not been easy. 00:02:07.42\00:02:10.60 But then a new approach was taken. 00:02:10.63\00:02:13.52 One that has proven to be successful. 00:02:13.55\00:02:15.93 At our church we were discussing ways 00:02:19.48\00:02:21.66 that we can share our love for God 00:02:21.69\00:02:23.39 and friendship with others. 00:02:23.42\00:02:25.33 One of my friends suggested that we've a small group meeting. 00:02:25.36\00:02:28.64 Because of our group, now Ruslan and Marguerita 00:02:28.67\00:02:31.23 are the fruits of our meetings 00:02:31.26\00:02:32.70 and I'm so happy that they have joined us. 00:02:32.73\00:02:37.16 Ruslan is the newest member of the group 00:02:37.19\00:02:39.99 to join the church and he started attending 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.74 the group for a specific reason. 00:02:42.77\00:02:47.83 I came to this group, 00:02:47.86\00:02:48.92 because they were studying the Bible. 00:02:48.95\00:02:50.98 Now God is my life and my friend. 00:02:51.01\00:02:54.49 Getting a small group established 00:02:54.52\00:02:56.76 isn't an easy task. 00:02:56.79\00:02:58.62 So the group was thankful for some help in the beginning. 00:02:58.65\00:03:01.69 When we started our group, our pastor Vladimar joined us 00:03:05.00\00:03:08.61 and he helped us to get us going. 00:03:08.64\00:03:10.37 He was very helpful. 00:03:10.40\00:03:11.66 This group is successful 00:03:15.08\00:03:16.41 because they are united and are like a family. 00:03:16.44\00:03:19.75 They help each other and I'm sure 00:03:19.78\00:03:21.49 that if something were to happen to one of them, 00:03:21.52\00:03:23.94 the others would support 00:03:23.97\00:03:25.80 and help each other grow spiritually. 00:03:25.83\00:03:28.78 The members of this group have been changed 00:03:28.81\00:03:31.60 through their new friendships 00:03:31.63\00:03:33.23 as well as continual study of the Holy Scriptures. 00:03:33.26\00:03:37.02 God has changed me a lot, 00:03:39.84\00:03:41.37 because before I never used to listen 00:03:41.40\00:03:43.33 to other peoples opinions. 00:03:43.36\00:03:45.32 I was selfish and everything was my way. 00:03:45.35\00:03:48.26 But when I went to church and got to know God, 00:03:48.29\00:03:50.94 I can now listen to people and consider their opinions. 00:03:50.97\00:03:55.74 Small group evangelism has been proven 00:03:55.77\00:03:58.61 to be successful all over the world. 00:03:58.64\00:04:01.46 For many it is the best way to truly grow the church 00:04:01.49\00:04:05.69 and build strong congregations. 00:04:05.72\00:04:08.10 I'm sure this model of outreach is one of the best ways 00:04:11.92\00:04:15.17 to reach people and grow as a church. 00:04:15.20\00:04:18.16 People become like family 00:04:18.19\00:04:19.98 and their relationships help to unify the church. 00:04:20.01\00:04:24.18 The church members who started the small group 00:04:24.21\00:04:27.27 are happy that they have found a way to reach out 00:04:27.30\00:04:29.58 to those people in their community 00:04:29.61\00:04:31.35 who are searching for the truth. 00:04:31.38\00:04:33.87 For Ruslan and Marguerita, 00:04:33.90\00:04:36.29 their lives have been touched by people 00:04:36.32\00:04:38.82 who are willing to let them in to their church family. 00:04:38.85\00:04:41.36 I am so happy that they have found the truth. 00:04:45.15\00:04:48.20 They both used to be different people, 00:04:48.23\00:04:50.21 but now their lives have purpose. 00:04:50.24\00:04:52.41 I used to be the same way, 00:04:52.44\00:04:53.52 but when I found God, my life changed. 00:04:53.55\00:04:57.97 Your mission offerings will help provide 00:04:58.00\00:05:00.49 a new church building 00:05:00.52\00:05:01.81 for the Seventh-day Adventist members in Krasnoyarsk. 00:05:01.84\00:05:05.58 Currently they have to rent public buildings, 00:05:05.61\00:05:08.49 so that their members can meet each Sabbath. 00:05:08.52\00:05:11.53 This new church will provide a stable place of worship 00:05:11.56\00:05:16.08 where they can invite their friends and families to worship. 00:05:16.11\00:05:19.92 Please keep the members 00:05:19.95\00:05:21.18 in Krasnoyarsk in your prayers 00:05:21.21\00:05:23.77 as you give your mission offerings this Sabbath. 00:05:23.80\00:05:26.77 Move from Siberia, we now travel to the somewhat 00:05:31.48\00:05:34.49 warmer climates of Africa and my guest is Nancy Kyte. 00:05:34.52\00:05:38.87 Nancy, thanks for joining us. 00:05:38.90\00:05:40.68 Now you're the marketing director 00:05:40.71\00:05:41.94 for Adventist Mission 00:05:41.97\00:05:43.00 and recently you visited Madagascar, 00:05:43.03\00:05:46.35 I guess that's how you pronounce it. 00:05:46.38\00:05:47.57 Yes. Describe this island? 00:05:47.60\00:05:50.61 Madagascar is a beautiful island. 00:05:50.64\00:05:52.72 It wasn't quite as developed as I thought it would be. 00:05:52.75\00:05:56.06 People there work extremely hard 00:05:56.09\00:05:58.29 just to make a living and just to survive 00:05:58.32\00:06:00.15 from one day to the next. 00:06:00.18\00:06:01.93 You find a lot of people just doing subsistence work 00:06:01.96\00:06:04.93 or subsistence farming just to stay alive. 00:06:04.96\00:06:08.95 And the life expectancy isn't all that long. 00:06:08.98\00:06:11.36 Maybe around 53. 00:06:11.39\00:06:13.67 So if had lived there under those circumstances, 00:06:13.70\00:06:16.23 I would be long gone by now. 00:06:16.26\00:06:18.06 Well, not that long ago. A little while. 00:06:18.09\00:06:20.73 Yeah, but that's, you know, this is the challenge 00:06:20.76\00:06:22.90 in many parts of the developing world. 00:06:22.93\00:06:24.72 Now, Madagascar is French speaking, 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.92 a former French colony I guess. Yes. 00:06:26.95\00:06:29.15 Now, describe the Seventh-day Adventist church's presence? 00:06:29.18\00:06:33.12 Well, the presence there 00:06:33.15\00:06:34.48 is actually larger than I expected. 00:06:34.51\00:06:36.36 It has been growing quite a bit 00:06:36.39\00:06:38.55 and while we were there, 00:06:38.58\00:06:39.61 we had a chance to visit a church, 00:06:39.64\00:06:41.14 it was a new church. 00:06:41.17\00:06:42.20 It'd only been built for maybe couple of months. 00:06:42.23\00:06:45.54 It was in the south part of the island, 00:06:45.57\00:06:47.58 so we went down to see this church 00:06:47.61\00:06:50.05 which had been started 00:06:50.08\00:06:51.25 originally by a Global Mission pioneer, 00:06:51.28\00:06:53.89 so he had been sent to this area 00:06:53.92\00:06:56.15 specifically to make friends in the area 00:06:56.18\00:06:59.17 and offer Bible study to those who were interested. 00:06:59.20\00:07:03.14 He went to a very difficult people group though. 00:07:03.17\00:07:06.20 Now, you describe them as an outcast tribe. 00:07:06.23\00:07:09.51 What do you mean by that? 00:07:09.54\00:07:10.66 Well, it so happens that centuries ago, 00:07:10.69\00:07:13.89 there were some superstitions that 00:07:13.92\00:07:16.82 meant that this particular people group 00:07:16.85\00:07:19.55 were the descendants of only one human 00:07:19.58\00:07:23.16 and not two humans. 00:07:23.19\00:07:24.77 And so there is a lot of disgrace 00:07:24.80\00:07:26.84 and discrimination about that. 00:07:26.87\00:07:28.38 So this group, they live in isolation, 00:07:28.41\00:07:30.54 although they can go out and join the community for work 00:07:30.57\00:07:34.29 and that sort of thing. 00:07:34.32\00:07:35.42 So it's almost like they were lower cast. 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.32 Exactly. Exactly. 00:07:37.35\00:07:39.83 So the Global Mission pioneer went there 00:07:39.86\00:07:41.73 and established this congregation. 00:07:41.76\00:07:43.24 Describe the church, the building? 00:07:43.27\00:07:45.38 Well, the church was very interesting 00:07:45.41\00:07:47.75 and we had a little opening ceremony there 00:07:47.78\00:07:50.65 and I was talking with some of the members afterwards 00:07:50.68\00:07:53.74 and I said, well, now how did this church get built. 00:07:53.77\00:07:56.47 Did you have, you know, you hire someone to build it 00:07:56.50\00:08:00.12 and they immediately went to chattering among themselves 00:08:00.15\00:08:02.75 because they did not hire anyone. 00:08:02.78\00:08:04.58 They all did the work themselves. 00:08:04.61\00:08:07.06 In other words for the foundation, 00:08:07.09\00:08:09.27 where the concrete of the church was, the floor. 00:08:09.30\00:08:12.56 They all hiked by foot and went to the mountain 00:08:12.59\00:08:15.28 and chipped out rocks by hand, 00:08:15.31\00:08:17.82 carry them on their heads 00:08:17.85\00:08:19.41 and brought them into the village 00:08:19.44\00:08:20.86 and mix them with cement and that laid the foundation. 00:08:20.89\00:08:24.57 They also used about 250 Ravenala trees. 00:08:24.60\00:08:28.12 Now Ravenala tree is similar to a banana tree, only, 00:08:28.15\00:08:31.34 you know, it fans out like this. 00:08:31.37\00:08:34.01 250 of those trees they cut to take care of the walls 00:08:34.04\00:08:37.70 and that sort of thing. 00:08:37.73\00:08:38.76 So incredible amount of labor, 00:08:38.79\00:08:41.18 but they did it knowing that it was going to be 00:08:41.21\00:08:43.23 their first church in that area. Amazing. 00:08:43.26\00:08:46.55 Now, did you actually meet the Global Mission pioneer? 00:08:46.58\00:08:49.64 I did. Describe him? 00:08:49.67\00:08:51.87 He is a young man, not married that long. 00:08:51.90\00:08:55.13 His wife is also young and they have a little baby. 00:08:55.16\00:08:58.63 I think even he was surprised 00:08:58.66\00:09:00.06 at how fast the work was growing, 00:09:00.09\00:09:01.86 because they started just, 00:09:01.89\00:09:03.46 you know, with the handful of people 00:09:03.49\00:09:04.89 and that group soon jumped to like 22 and then 50. 00:09:04.92\00:09:09.05 So I think even he was surprised 00:09:09.08\00:09:11.31 at how fast the work was taking 00:09:11.34\00:09:14.87 and how much interest there actually 00:09:14.90\00:09:16.74 was in learning about the Bible. 00:09:16.77\00:09:18.95 And learning about a God who gives everyone dignity. 00:09:18.98\00:09:22.77 Very important. Now when the pioneer went there. 00:09:22.80\00:09:25.90 Did he talk about how he started the work, 00:09:25.93\00:09:27.91 I mean, did he-- 00:09:27.94\00:09:29.35 had he come from that area himself? No. 00:09:29.38\00:09:31.92 He was not from that area but he moved into the area 00:09:31.95\00:09:34.92 and started with activities for children, 00:09:34.95\00:09:37.85 you know, games after school and that sort of thing. 00:09:37.88\00:09:40.79 And then became acquainted with the parents, 00:09:40.82\00:09:43.75 and you know, offered to teach the lessons 00:09:43.78\00:09:47.12 from the Bible if they were interested 00:09:47.15\00:09:49.39 and since he was new and he was a person 00:09:49.42\00:09:52.30 that had an attractive personality, they liked him. 00:09:52.33\00:09:56.39 And they recognized that he was an educated person 00:09:56.42\00:09:59.41 and they wanted to learn from him. 00:09:59.44\00:10:01.21 So it kind of started from there. 00:10:01.24\00:10:04.43 And also along with the support of a nearby Adventist church 00:10:04.46\00:10:08.30 what was established in the next city over. 00:10:08.33\00:10:10.08 Okay, very good. 00:10:10.11\00:10:11.14 So got a lot of support from them. 00:10:11.17\00:10:12.79 Good, good, and now, perhaps you should back up, 00:10:12.82\00:10:15.39 because there maybe some of our viewers 00:10:15.42\00:10:16.82 who don't know what a Global Mission pioneer is? 00:10:16.85\00:10:18.98 Can you describe what a Global Mission pioneer is? 00:10:19.01\00:10:21.43 Yes, a Global Mission pioneer is a person 00:10:21.46\00:10:24.22 who works as a missionary within his or her own culture. 00:10:24.25\00:10:29.68 There are some places where it doesn't work very well 00:10:29.71\00:10:32.41 or it's not as effective if a foreign person 00:10:32.44\00:10:34.77 comes into work in that area. 00:10:34.80\00:10:36.65 So a pioneer already knows the language, 00:10:36.68\00:10:39.34 he knows the customs, the traditions 00:10:39.37\00:10:42.92 and it's a lot faster, 00:10:42.95\00:10:45.04 it's a lot easier for them to make 00:10:45.07\00:10:46.47 inroads into a community. 00:10:46.50\00:10:48.44 Yeah, and they-- because they speak the language 00:10:48.47\00:10:51.00 and they know the culture, they know what they should say 00:10:51.03\00:10:53.09 and what they shouldn't say. Exactly. 00:10:53.12\00:10:55.11 And they always humbles me when I visit these pioneers, 00:10:55.14\00:10:57.68 because they are not living in luxury, 00:10:57.71\00:10:59.75 I mean-- No, they are not. 00:10:59.78\00:11:01.84 In fact we went to the pioneer's home 00:11:01.87\00:11:05.67 and shared a meal that his wife had prepared 00:11:05.70\00:11:08.62 and pitch dark, you know, very little light, 00:11:08.65\00:11:12.83 but there isn't much light in the neighborhood either, 00:11:12.86\00:11:14.91 so they lived the very same way, 00:11:14.94\00:11:16.66 so for us it seemed a little bit precarious 00:11:16.69\00:11:18.94 to go down the path in the darkness 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.19 and find our way into his home. 00:11:21.22\00:11:24.01 But they were lovely hosts 00:11:24.04\00:11:26.09 and I found that people in Madagascar 00:11:26.12\00:11:27.91 themselves to be extremely friendly and kind, 00:11:27.94\00:11:32.20 especially considering the hard day to day life 00:11:32.23\00:11:34.48 that most of them seem to have. Exactly. 00:11:34.51\00:11:36.49 Now are there any large cities at all in Madagascar 00:11:36.52\00:11:39.20 or is it all rural? 00:11:39.23\00:11:40.79 Most of it seems to be rural from what we saw 00:11:40.82\00:11:43.36 and it seem like they were a lot of intersected highways 00:11:43.39\00:11:46.85 and if you get down the road and you drive and drive 00:11:46.88\00:11:50.17 and then the next day you turn around and come back, 00:11:50.20\00:11:52.62 at least that's the route that we took, 00:11:52.65\00:11:55.98 but such a beautiful country, 00:11:56.01\00:11:57.94 so full of natural beauty. It was lovely to see. 00:11:57.97\00:12:02.54 Well, thank you much, Nancy, for sharing with us today. 00:12:02.57\00:12:05.40 My pleasure. 00:12:05.43\00:12:06.81 And viewers at home, 00:12:06.84\00:12:08.90 please remember Global Mission pioneers 00:12:08.93\00:12:11.60 working around the world, 00:12:11.63\00:12:12.66 sometimes in very, very difficult circumstances 00:12:12.69\00:12:16.05 and remember the people in Madagascar 00:12:16.08\00:12:19.19 as they learn about Jesus and His love for him, 00:12:19.22\00:12:22.21 for everybody and that He came 00:12:22.24\00:12:25.31 and died for them. Don't go away. 00:12:25.34\00:12:27.27 We'll be coming back in just a few seconds 00:12:27.30\00:12:29.04 to talk about a very important mission anniversary. 00:12:29.07\00:12:31.91 Some 50 years ago, 00:13:03.51\00:13:04.94 Adventist missionary spent 40 days 00:13:04.97\00:13:07.09 traversing the rough jungles of Papua New Guinea 00:13:07.12\00:13:09.50 to reach out to people 00:13:09.53\00:13:10.77 who have never before heard the name of Jesus. 00:13:10.80\00:13:13.93 They healed the sick, fed the poor 00:13:13.96\00:13:15.67 and provided spiritual healing to God's children. 00:13:15.70\00:13:19.07 Today this same trip can be done in 15 minutes. 00:13:19.10\00:13:22.24 Thanks to a mission plane that was paid for 00:13:22.27\00:13:24.24 with your mission offerings. 00:13:24.27\00:13:25.92 The mode of transportation may have changed, 00:13:25.95\00:13:28.62 but the message of hope in Jesus is still the same. 00:13:28.65\00:13:32.06 Welcome back. 00:14:09.91\00:14:11.02 Nancy Kyte is still with me to talk about 00:14:11.05\00:14:13.34 a very important anniversary this year which is? 00:14:13.37\00:14:17.10 It is the 100th anniversary 00:14:17.13\00:14:19.05 of the 13th Sabbath Mission Offering. 00:14:19.08\00:14:21.48 Okay, now the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:14:21.51\00:14:23.03 is familiar to Seventh-day Adventist. 00:14:23.06\00:14:25.78 Describe it for some of our viewers 00:14:25.81\00:14:27.22 who may not have heard of it before. 00:14:27.25\00:14:29.41 It is a special offering that is collected 00:14:29.44\00:14:31.76 at the end of each quarter, 00:14:31.79\00:14:32.97 so in other words the 13th Sabbath, 00:14:33.00\00:14:35.70 once a quarter and that offering goes 00:14:35.73\00:14:37.68 to fund new projects. 00:14:37.71\00:14:40.34 In other words work that isn't already being supported 00:14:40.37\00:14:42.80 by other offerings in the church. 00:14:42.83\00:14:44.59 Okay, and so this special mission project, 00:14:44.62\00:14:47.01 but sometimes it can be to help 00:14:47.04\00:14:49.65 refurbish mission hospital or something like that. 00:14:49.68\00:14:52.04 Sure, yes. 00:14:52.07\00:14:53.40 Now, I mentioned earlier that the real beginnings 00:14:53.43\00:14:56.65 of Seventh-day Adventist mission offerings 00:14:56.68\00:14:58.31 go right back to the Pitcairn. 00:14:58.34\00:15:01.50 Describe that for us 00:15:01.53\00:15:02.65 and the offering that was collected? 00:15:02.68\00:15:04.14 Well, the offering that was collected, 00:15:04.17\00:15:05.92 it was actually quite historical. 00:15:05.95\00:15:07.58 Now the Adventist Church had been 00:15:07.61\00:15:08.91 sending offerings for mission projects previously, 00:15:08.94\00:15:11.43 but this was first time that they had done it 00:15:11.46\00:15:13.42 in organized fashion. 00:15:13.45\00:15:15.74 And so Adventist Churches 00:15:15.77\00:15:17.69 everywhere started collecting money 00:15:17.72\00:15:19.48 to raise enough funds to send 00:15:19.51\00:15:23.67 a ship over to the Pitcairn Islands. 00:15:23.70\00:15:27.01 So there were kids who were making popcorn balls 00:15:27.04\00:15:29.90 and selling them for penny a piece. 00:15:29.93\00:15:31.76 Everything to raise money just for this important project. 00:15:31.79\00:15:35.24 And that was the beginning of the organized 00:15:35.27\00:15:38.54 13 Sabbath Mission Offerings from that point on. 00:15:38.57\00:15:41.54 So for 100 years, 00:15:41.57\00:15:43.33 Adventists have been giving to specific projects 00:15:43.36\00:15:45.94 as well as just to the general mission fund 00:15:45.97\00:15:47.89 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:15:47.92\00:15:49.38 Yes, I remember doing that as a little girl 00:15:49.41\00:15:51.33 and you probably did too. I certainly did. 00:15:51.36\00:15:53.68 Well, thank you so much for joining us to talk about this 00:15:53.71\00:15:57.03 because it is special anniversary 00:15:57.06\00:15:59.92 and we have a video clip coming up soon 00:15:59.95\00:16:02.81 to focus on this, but if you are interested in 00:16:02.84\00:16:06.88 how you can give your mission offerings, 00:16:06.91\00:16:08.50 you can give it to church every Sabbath 00:16:08.53\00:16:10.06 or you can just go to adventistmission.org 00:16:10.09\00:16:13.04 and there you can give your mission offerings online. 00:16:13.07\00:16:16.65 And mission offerings go to all aspects 00:16:16.68\00:16:18.93 of the mission of the church. 00:16:18.96\00:16:20.13 It helps missionaries to work in different parts of the world, 00:16:20.16\00:16:23.57 Global Mission pioneers, our internet work 00:16:23.60\00:16:27.64 media work, humanitarian work, 00:16:27.67\00:16:30.22 everything is supported in someway 00:16:30.25\00:16:32.37 through the various mission offerings. 00:16:32.40\00:16:34.22 But let's now go to this video 00:16:34.25\00:16:35.58 that focuses on this historic occasion 00:16:35.61\00:16:38.16 and this 100th anniversary. 00:16:38.19\00:16:40.14 The 13th Sabbath Offering 00:16:49.74\00:16:51.21 doesn't mark the beginning 00:16:51.24\00:16:52.56 of mission giving in the Adventist Church. 00:16:52.59\00:16:55.09 Adventists have been giving mission offerings 00:16:55.12\00:16:57.12 for more than 25 years. 00:16:57.15\00:17:00.19 The General Conference School Department 00:17:00.22\00:17:02.69 decided that there ought to be this project 00:17:02.72\00:17:06.41 to send a vessel out to the Pacific Ocean 00:17:06.44\00:17:10.69 to go to the islands 00:17:10.72\00:17:12.92 and so they got an appropriation 00:17:12.95\00:17:16.38 which didn't cover the cost, but then they invited 00:17:16.41\00:17:19.72 the mostly the children of the church, 00:17:19.75\00:17:22.92 to help raise funds to build the ship 00:17:22.95\00:17:25.73 that would go out 00:17:25.76\00:17:27.13 to all the islands of the Pacific Ocean. 00:17:27.16\00:17:30.17 And in 1890, 00:17:30.20\00:17:32.58 that ship sailed from San Francisco 00:17:32.61\00:17:34.88 and a month later landed at Pitcairn, 00:17:34.91\00:17:37.45 its first stop. 00:17:37.48\00:17:38.98 Virtually everyone on the island 00:17:39.01\00:17:41.78 above the age of majority was baptized. 00:17:41.81\00:17:45.09 The truth is that all of the Pacific Ocean 00:17:45.12\00:17:48.32 was affected by the ship Pitcarin 00:17:48.35\00:17:51.39 and the missionaries who went out. 00:17:51.42\00:17:53.07 Nearly 100 missionaries in the different voyages 00:17:53.10\00:17:57.14 about went on Pitcairn. 00:17:57.17\00:18:00.22 So it was, it was a momentous project 00:18:00.25\00:18:03.33 that grew from just an idea 00:18:03.36\00:18:06.20 and one man having the burden that we must go. 00:18:06.23\00:18:11.25 tells us to do. Go, go, go. 00:18:11.28\00:18:16.34 Of course the offering for the ship Pitcairn 00:18:16.37\00:18:19.49 was the first Sabbath school project of the church. 00:18:19.52\00:18:23.77 And years later when the church decided that, 00:18:23.80\00:18:28.86 that had been a good thing, 00:18:28.89\00:18:30.80 they then took up the idea 00:18:30.83\00:18:33.44 of a periodic offering that would be very special 00:18:33.47\00:18:37.19 and the special needs in the church 00:18:37.22\00:18:38.86 and that became the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:18:38.89\00:18:42.07 of the Sabbath School Department. 00:18:42.10\00:18:44.23 But in 1912 the General Conference voted 00:18:44.26\00:18:46.94 to start a special project called 13th Sabbath Offering 00:18:46.97\00:18:51.22 in which the church would focus 00:18:51.25\00:18:53.17 on a special project every quarter. 00:18:53.20\00:18:56.17 When we have a special offering 00:18:56.20\00:18:59.13 that we're all going to come together to give. 00:18:59.16\00:19:02.07 We get closer to each other in doing that. 00:19:02.10\00:19:05.08 The first 13th Sabbath projects 00:19:05.11\00:19:07.48 tended to feature general areas of the world 00:19:07.51\00:19:09.78 such as the work in Central Africa. 00:19:09.81\00:19:12.63 But very quickly the work began to focus on specific projects 00:19:12.66\00:19:16.97 such as the River Plate secondary school 00:19:17.00\00:19:19.70 which eventually became their college. 00:19:19.73\00:19:22.34 And on the Adventist training school in Chile 00:19:22.37\00:19:25.61 which eventually became their university. 00:19:25.64\00:19:27.73 Well, the mission quarterly 00:19:31.18\00:19:32.35 actually started as a simple eight page leaflet 00:19:32.38\00:19:37.09 in which the mission offering was focused on 00:19:37.12\00:19:40.20 and a couple little stories were initiated 00:19:40.23\00:19:43.61 and most of it was encouraging people 00:19:43.64\00:19:46.16 to give to mission offerings. 00:19:46.19\00:19:48.14 This helped the church in the world know 00:19:48.17\00:19:51.26 that they were not isolated that they-- 00:19:51.29\00:19:53.86 that we needed to grow 00:19:53.89\00:19:56.02 and the 13th Sabbath Offering because it focused on projects, 00:19:56.05\00:20:00.80 helped us understand the need 00:20:00.83\00:20:03.02 to give to help specific people 00:20:03.05\00:20:05.46 in specific places around the world. 00:20:05.49\00:20:08.37 Jesus reached people through stories 00:20:08.40\00:20:11.40 and today we reach people through stories. 00:20:11.43\00:20:14.92 The mission stories are told in such a way that 00:20:14.95\00:20:17.85 we can visualize the individual or the group involved, 00:20:17.88\00:20:21.61 so that we can feel their pain and feel their joys, 00:20:21.64\00:20:26.05 understand their challenges 00:20:26.08\00:20:28.48 and rejoice in their opportunities. 00:20:28.51\00:20:31.09 The mission stories are to make us 00:20:31.12\00:20:33.92 identify with others, to want to pray for them 00:20:33.95\00:20:37.67 and to want to give to make their challenges 00:20:37.70\00:20:40.78 into opportunities that will reach the world. 00:20:40.81\00:20:45.22 Adventists have to learn to be mission minded. 00:20:45.25\00:20:47.87 It didn't come naturally. 00:20:47.90\00:20:49.55 But once people began focusing on mission, 00:20:49.58\00:20:52.78 the work around the world spread 00:20:52.81\00:20:55.02 and although the church began in North America 00:20:55.05\00:20:58.66 and in 1912 nearly all Adventists 00:20:58.69\00:21:01.23 were in North America. 00:21:01.26\00:21:02.78 Today only 6% are in North America. 00:21:02.81\00:21:06.49 94% of all Adventists live outside North America. 00:21:06.52\00:21:11.59 Most major Adventist institutions started very small, 00:21:16.42\00:21:20.05 started with offering such as the 13th Sabbath Offering. 00:21:20.08\00:21:24.44 Imagine a little clinic 00:21:24.47\00:21:26.39 on the shores of the Amazon River 00:21:26.42\00:21:29.83 that was instituted to treat the indigenous people. 00:21:29.86\00:21:33.37 Today, it is a fully functioning medical center 00:21:33.40\00:21:37.48 in a major city that influences 00:21:37.51\00:21:40.90 thousands of people every year for Christ. 00:21:40.93\00:21:43.70 That's what our 13th Sabbath Offering 00:21:43.73\00:21:45.91 and our mission offerings do. 00:21:45.94\00:21:48.91 In the last 100 years, roughly 500 institutions 00:21:48.94\00:21:53.46 and plants have received money 00:21:53.49\00:21:55.56 from the 13th Sabbath Offering. 00:21:55.59\00:21:57.70 Imagine the amount of work that can do. 00:21:57.73\00:22:00.83 Each offering was a seed that is planted 00:22:00.86\00:22:04.20 somewhere in the world 00:22:04.23\00:22:05.89 and each of those seeds has grown 00:22:05.92\00:22:08.43 from a tiny medical clinic to a great hospital, 00:22:08.46\00:22:12.06 from a tiny church 00:22:12.09\00:22:13.32 to a great institution of evangelism. 00:22:13.35\00:22:16.24 And each of those institutions are like trees 00:22:16.27\00:22:19.36 that have grown from the seed 00:22:19.39\00:22:21.32 and those trees have branched out 00:22:21.35\00:22:23.23 and planted more seeds. 00:22:23.26\00:22:25.22 So the cycle continues to grow. Our offerings are seeds. 00:22:25.25\00:22:30.77 Giving to 13th Sabbath Offerings 00:22:35.11\00:22:37.33 is even more important today than before. 00:22:37.36\00:22:40.13 Imagine our church at 70 million members 00:22:40.16\00:22:43.15 and many, many people 00:22:43.18\00:22:45.03 who attend who are not members yet. 00:22:45.06\00:22:47.79 Giving to a specific focuses, specific project every quarter. 00:22:47.82\00:22:52.92 Imagine what we could do 00:22:52.95\00:22:54.58 if we all gave sacrificially to a specific project, 00:22:54.61\00:22:58.96 we can pray for that project 00:22:58.99\00:23:01.30 and we can understand the people 00:23:01.33\00:23:03.26 who need this work 00:23:03.29\00:23:04.77 and we can make a huge difference in the world. 00:23:04.80\00:23:07.98 13th Sabbath Offering projects 00:23:08.01\00:23:10.24 are not just about breaking mortar, 00:23:10.27\00:23:12.84 they're about facilitating the outreach 00:23:12.87\00:23:17.30 to millions of people around the world 00:23:17.33\00:23:19.29 who would never hear of the gospel. 00:23:19.32\00:23:21.83 We may build a clinic in some far off country. 00:23:21.86\00:23:25.47 It's not the building, it's the doctors and nurses, 00:23:25.50\00:23:28.74 treating people in need. 00:23:28.77\00:23:30.77 And that's what mission is about. 00:23:30.80\00:23:34.09 World mission isn't just another pot 00:23:34.12\00:23:36.64 into which we cast coins. 00:23:36.67\00:23:38.53 It is God's commission telling us to go. 00:23:38.56\00:23:41.88 Every quarter Adventist Mission produces 00:23:54.03\00:23:56.47 an inspiring collection of video mission stories 00:23:56.50\00:23:59.98 and reports for the Adventist Mission DVD. 00:24:00.01\00:24:03.90 If you live in North Africa and would like to receive 00:24:03.93\00:24:06.23 a free sample copy of the Adventist Mission DVD, 00:24:06.26\00:24:10.29 then call or visit our website 00:24:10.32\00:24:12.40 and ask for a sample Adventist Mission DVD 00:24:12.43\00:24:16.05 or request offer number 303. 00:24:16.08\00:24:20.01 Please remember to clearly state your name, 00:24:20.04\00:24:22.50 full address and don't forget to mention 00:24:22.53\00:24:25.08 the Adventist Mission DVD or offer 303. 00:24:25.11\00:24:29.96 Well, that's it for today's program. 00:24:29.99\00:24:32.04 Thank you so much for your continuing 00:24:32.07\00:24:34.57 prayerful support of Global Mission 00:24:34.60\00:24:36.93 and your weekly mission offerings. 00:24:36.96\00:24:39.57 As we finish this program, please watch this music video 00:24:39.60\00:24:43.34 and take time to talk to our Father 00:24:43.37\00:24:46.00 about how you can be involved in His mission 00:24:46.03\00:24:49.41 to share the good news of His love. 00:24:49.44\00:24:51.77 Until next time, I'm Gary Krause, 00:24:51.80\00:24:53.75 wishing you God's richest blessing. 00:24:53.78\00:24:56.50
