In 1888, Abram La Rue, retried person 00:00:08.36\00:00:11.33 from the United States came here to Hong Kong Island 00:00:11.36\00:00:14.62 to start a church and a school. 00:00:14.65\00:00:17.37 He was the first Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:17.40\00:00:19.23 all the Far East serving for 15 years. 00:00:19.26\00:00:22.24 You're never too old to server. 00:00:22.27\00:00:24.12 Ask the Lord what you can do to serve Him today. 00:00:24.15\00:00:26.90 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:32.10\00:00:34.53 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:34.56\00:00:37.44 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, Go. 00:00:37.47\00:00:43.01 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:43.04\00:00:47.79 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:47.82\00:00:51.96 Hello and thanks for joining us on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:57.13\00:01:00.08 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:00.11\00:01:01.75 Every week on this program, we look at what's happening 00:01:01.78\00:01:04.30 on the frontlines of mission around the world. 00:01:04.33\00:01:07.28 One of the biggest challenges facing us today 00:01:07.31\00:01:10.25 is the growing masses of people 00:01:10.28\00:01:12.21 living in the big cities of the world. 00:01:12.24\00:01:14.78 Today I'll be talking with Rick Kajiura, 00:01:14.81\00:01:17.04 communication director for Adventist Mission. 00:01:17.07\00:01:19.20 And Rick will talk about exciting possibilities 00:01:19.23\00:01:22.20 for mission with centers of influence. 00:01:22.23\00:01:25.54 We'll also talk with Hans Olson 00:01:25.57\00:01:27.21 about Global Mission work in Asia 00:01:27.24\00:01:29.56 and we'll visit a unique church in the country of Mongolia. 00:01:29.59\00:01:33.59 But first up, let's go to Africa. 00:01:33.62\00:01:36.56 Mission hospitals were established 00:01:36.59\00:01:39.32 with that really kind, generous, caring attitude. 00:01:39.35\00:01:44.94 Often on the part of an individual missionaries 00:01:44.97\00:01:47.77 who, you know we used to say 00:01:47.80\00:01:49.25 that we'd take public transport to the further spot, 00:01:49.28\00:01:52.52 get that bicycle out, ride that bicycle 00:01:52.55\00:01:54.56 till the bicycle could no longer go, 00:01:54.59\00:01:56.11 then they would walk and when they were exhausted 00:01:56.14\00:01:58.66 and couldn't get any further, they said this must be 00:01:58.69\00:02:00.60 the spot for the mission hospital. 00:02:00.63\00:02:01.97 And they were set in very, very far flung areas 00:02:02.00\00:02:05.28 and still to this day, even they're very primitive 00:02:05.31\00:02:08.24 often provide a level of care 00:02:08.27\00:02:11.57 that's totally unavailable to the people in those regions. 00:02:11.60\00:02:16.80 In 1950, the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:02:19.87\00:02:22.52 established Ishaka Hospital in Western Uganda. 00:02:22.55\00:02:25.71 Built on a hill overlooking a small town below it, 00:02:25.74\00:02:28.94 for 60 years, it has served the people 00:02:28.97\00:02:30.87 on this region, of a country at a times 00:02:30.90\00:02:33.23 enduring through war and political strife. 00:02:33.26\00:02:36.85 For the past 11 years, 00:02:36.88\00:02:38.12 Adventist medical missionary Doctor Victor Valenzuela 00:02:38.15\00:02:41.29 has ministered to the people of Ishaka. 00:02:41.32\00:02:44.51 I grew up in the church, you know, 00:02:44.54\00:02:47.91 I was born into the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:02:47.94\00:02:49.85 but I never thought of myself as becoming a missionary. 00:02:49.88\00:02:53.56 Of course during my younger years, 00:02:53.59\00:02:55.83 I was interested when I was reading the guide 00:02:55.86\00:03:02.31 and I could read about the stories of other missionaries 00:03:02.34\00:03:07.41 but I never thought myself of becoming a missionary. 00:03:07.44\00:03:10.65 But God has His own ways and so here I am you know. 00:03:10.68\00:03:15.64 More than one third of Ugandan people 00:03:15.67\00:03:17.64 live below the international poverty level. 00:03:17.67\00:03:20.14 In Ishaka, the percentage is even higher. 00:03:20.17\00:03:23.07 But the staff of Ishaka Hospital 00:03:23.10\00:03:24.93 are committed to serving as Jesus hands 00:03:24.96\00:03:27.51 to a community in need. 00:03:27.54\00:03:29.91 It's an experience that I'll never exchange for another, 00:03:29.94\00:03:32.88 you know, for any other experience in the world. 00:03:32.91\00:03:35.91 There's nothing like working for our Lord. 00:03:35.94\00:03:40.74 A large portion of the medical patients 00:03:40.77\00:03:42.92 they see each day are infected with HIV and AIDS. 00:03:42.95\00:03:46.30 The pediatric ward is full of malaria patients, 00:03:46.33\00:03:49.54 yet the committed staff of Ishaka are saving lives 00:03:49.57\00:03:52.45 and telling people of Jesus and His love for them, 00:03:52.48\00:03:55.22 no matter how hard the circumstances get. 00:03:55.25\00:03:58.26 It's the joy of serving this people 00:03:58.29\00:04:00.64 and this people in this community 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.71 and doing it for the Lord, that's all that I can say. 00:04:02.74\00:04:07.27 I've never felt that I'm tired emotionally 00:04:07.30\00:04:11.99 or physically, you know. 00:04:12.02\00:04:14.39 We like doing it, doing it for the Lord. 00:04:14.42\00:04:16.71 Whether treating a child with malaria, 00:04:29.65\00:04:32.09 attending a staff meeting, or simply enjoying 00:04:32.12\00:04:35.14 the beautiful environment surrounding him, 00:04:35.17\00:04:37.50 Doctor Valenzuela strives to use the gifts 00:04:37.53\00:04:40.00 that God has given him for His glory and honor, 00:04:40.03\00:04:43.50 no matter how difficult it gets. 00:04:43.53\00:04:46.85 I think sometimes that moments where in 00:04:46.88\00:04:50.20 you'd like to do more but because of the resources, 00:04:50.23\00:04:53.54 the limited resources, you know, you can't do much. 00:04:53.57\00:04:58.27 So I think its a toughest job, 00:04:58.30\00:04:59.69 you know, otherwise, me and my wife, 00:04:59.72\00:05:03.25 we like working in this institution 00:05:03.28\00:05:06.66 and I can have it no other way except the missionary. 00:05:06.69\00:05:12.48 To further serve the community, 00:05:14.29\00:05:16.13 Ishaka Adventist Hospital has established 00:05:16.16\00:05:18.44 a training school to train laboratory systems. 00:05:18.47\00:05:21.62 Here, young people can learn skills 00:05:21.65\00:05:23.51 they can use to serve their own communities. 00:05:23.54\00:05:26.34 Students come from all over Uganda 00:05:26.37\00:05:28.10 to take the courses offered at the hospital. 00:05:28.13\00:05:31.18 There are taught by working professionals 00:05:31.21\00:05:33.02 and are able to get valuable hands 00:05:33.05\00:05:34.60 on experience working in the hospital's labs. 00:05:34.63\00:05:37.86 With the high number of HIV, AIDS, 00:05:37.89\00:05:39.98 malaria and tuberculosis cases coming to the hospital, 00:05:40.01\00:05:43.32 having a fully functional lab is vital. 00:05:43.35\00:05:46.60 Students live in simple houses and each Sabbath, 00:05:46.63\00:05:49.25 the local church on the hospital grounds 00:05:49.28\00:05:51.68 overflows with students, doctors, 00:05:51.71\00:05:54.36 nurses and the Adventist community 00:05:54.39\00:05:56.57 that is grown over the years. 00:05:56.60\00:05:58.66 Often patients if their conditions allowed 00:05:58.69\00:06:01.28 are brought to the church 00:06:01.31\00:06:02.64 so that they can join the worship service. 00:06:02.67\00:06:05.17 Ishaka Adventist Hospital has blossomed 00:06:05.20\00:06:07.50 into a caring and spiritually nurturing oasis 00:06:07.53\00:06:10.60 to the people of Western Uganda. 00:06:10.63\00:06:13.41 Recently the health ministries 00:06:13.44\00:06:14.84 department of the General Conference 00:06:14.87\00:06:16.64 along with health professionals 00:06:16.67\00:06:18.05 from Loma Linda University and the Eastern African Division 00:06:18.08\00:06:21.61 paid a visit to Ishaka 00:06:21.64\00:06:23.05 to evaluate the hospital and its facilities. 00:06:23.08\00:06:25.73 Each department was examined 00:06:25.76\00:06:27.48 and staff were given the opportunity 00:06:27.51\00:06:29.23 to express their feelings 00:06:29.26\00:06:30.89 regarding the quality of care being provided to the community. 00:06:30.92\00:06:34.59 A report was prepared and then shared 00:06:34.62\00:06:36.54 with the hospital administrators and staff. 00:06:36.57\00:06:39.03 And we want to purge them to do that 00:06:44.71\00:06:47.02 which they're doing well to do it even better. 00:06:47.05\00:06:50.25 So we take the appreciative enquiry, 00:06:50.28\00:06:52.53 appreciative enquiry basically doesn't go around 00:06:52.56\00:06:54.62 and say, you're not doing this, you're not doing that. 00:06:54.65\00:06:56.14 It goes around and says, 00:06:56.17\00:06:57.42 you're doing that is so very well. 00:06:57.45\00:06:59.97 If you could employ the same enthusiasm 00:07:00.00\00:07:03.68 and the same methodologies 00:07:03.71\00:07:05.27 to what you're doing so very well, 00:07:05.30\00:07:06.64 maybe to this program or an another program. 00:07:06.67\00:07:09.34 Another member of the team was Dr. Peter Landless, 00:07:09.37\00:07:12.55 one of the associate health directors 00:07:12.58\00:07:14.30 of the General Conference. 00:07:14.33\00:07:16.26 We see at this hospital which is now 60 years old, 00:07:16.29\00:07:20.00 a service to the community of Ishaka, 00:07:20.03\00:07:22.69 a comprehensive service giving obstetrics, 00:07:22.72\00:07:26.61 gynecology, and surgical cover, 00:07:26.64\00:07:29.73 also with their family planning clinic 00:07:29.76\00:07:32.12 and HIV and AIDS outreach, 00:07:32.15\00:07:34.13 a very busy outpatients department 00:07:34.16\00:07:36.27 as you can see around me, 00:07:36.30\00:07:37.78 there are people milling to come in 00:07:37.81\00:07:39.08 and out of this hospital. 00:07:39.11\00:07:40.80 As we look at the challenges faced by the hospital, 00:07:40.83\00:07:44.78 of course, economics are huge, 00:07:44.81\00:07:47.45 nothing becomes cheaper 00:07:47.48\00:07:49.05 and maintenance of the plant is important, 00:07:49.08\00:07:51.44 provision of adequate facilities 00:07:51.47\00:07:54.19 is very, very important 00:07:54.22\00:07:55.76 and many things need to be upgraded. 00:07:55.79\00:07:57.78 And so we see that we have a mission here, 00:07:57.81\00:08:01.58 we hands of God are being our hands 00:08:01.61\00:08:05.90 demonstrating His heart 00:08:05.93\00:08:08.08 and we thank you as you contribute 00:08:08.11\00:08:11.98 as you continue to serve by your mission offerings 00:08:12.01\00:08:15.35 thereby you have a direct hand in helping to get 00:08:15.38\00:08:19.63 doctors, nurses, missionaries, 00:08:19.66\00:08:22.91 right to where they needed 00:08:22.94\00:08:24.88 so they can get the expertise and help 00:08:24.91\00:08:27.68 that other ones would not be here. 00:08:27.71\00:08:29.99 So continue to give to consider your stewardship 00:08:30.02\00:08:34.78 as you hasten His coming and help people in the process. 00:08:34.81\00:08:39.83 And I'd like to think that the members in the pews 00:09:12.85\00:09:15.65 around the world are also friends of our missionaries 00:09:15.68\00:09:19.17 and that they will support them with means and prayers 00:09:19.20\00:09:23.61 and maybe little letters of encouragement, 00:09:23.64\00:09:26.33 just to let them know that we are all in this together 00:09:26.36\00:09:30.16 whatever our particular role may be. 00:09:30.19\00:09:34.31 I'm glad to welcome Rick Kajiura 00:09:34.34\00:09:36.03 who works with me in the office of Adventist Mission. 00:09:36.06\00:09:38.22 Thanks for coming, Rick. It's good to be here, Gary. 00:09:38.25\00:09:40.66 And we're talking about something now 00:09:40.69\00:09:42.49 which is very exciting, we call them 00:09:42.52\00:09:45.59 centers of influence for urban mission, 00:09:45.62\00:09:48.60 tell us what centers of influence are. 00:09:48.63\00:09:51.02 Well, centers of influence is something that Ellen White 00:09:51.05\00:09:53.03 talked about that we should have 00:09:53.06\00:09:54.20 centers of influence in the big cities, 00:09:54.23\00:09:56.57 reaching people everyday where they are. 00:09:56.60\00:09:59.93 You know, Homer Carter Hubert works 00:09:59.96\00:10:02.49 in the Middle East centers have quote to said that-- 00:10:02.52\00:10:05.04 I think he send it you as well from the book 00:10:05.07\00:10:06.86 and it talked about how 00:10:06.89\00:10:10.07 some people in the certain area, 00:10:10.10\00:10:12.84 you know, they said the Christians came in 00:10:12.87\00:10:14.92 and they built compounds and churches 00:10:14.95\00:10:17.10 and expected us to go to them 00:10:17.13\00:10:19.10 and then he says, you know, 00:10:19.13\00:10:20.74 there's other Christian organization-- 00:10:20.77\00:10:21.93 there's other religious organization came in 00:10:21.96\00:10:23.82 and they came in and treated us farmers 00:10:23.85\00:10:25.44 and they lived among us and worked among us 00:10:25.47\00:10:27.59 and now they're following this other world religion. 00:10:27.62\00:10:29.94 So you know it just shows that 00:10:29.97\00:10:32.18 we can't just wait for everybody to come to us, 00:10:32.21\00:10:34.21 we need to be where they are, 00:10:34.24\00:10:35.27 we need to be meeting their needs 00:10:35.30\00:10:36.63 so they will trust us, come to know us, 00:10:36.66\00:10:39.53 to like us and then we can share 00:10:39.56\00:10:42.05 what we believe that impacts our lives. 00:10:42.08\00:10:45.05 So Ellen White was talking about small centers 00:10:45.08\00:10:47.57 in urban areas spread out that would connect 00:10:47.60\00:10:51.20 Adventists with the community by connecting with their needs. 00:10:51.23\00:10:55.46 And at the moment we're saying 00:10:55.49\00:10:56.72 lots of these starting up on the board 00:10:56.75\00:10:58.50 and I like to show us a video right now 00:10:58.53\00:11:01.85 and this video is of a different topic centers of influence 00:11:01.88\00:11:06.86 that is actually a thrift store but let's have a look at it. 00:11:06.89\00:11:10.19 In Copenhagen, Denmark, Seventh-day Adventists 00:11:10.22\00:11:13.31 have opened a thrift shop called Happy Hand. 00:11:13.34\00:11:17.10 This is not an ordinary shop, 00:11:17.13\00:11:19.07 it is a center of influence. 00:11:19.10\00:11:20.98 Here, employees are volunteers 00:11:21.01\00:11:23.13 and profits are used to help those in need. 00:11:23.16\00:11:26.43 The shop is beautifully decorated 00:11:26.46\00:11:28.19 with recycled furniture. 00:11:28.22\00:11:29.77 People who visit also find a place to sit down, 00:11:29.80\00:11:33.01 listen to inspiring music 00:11:33.04\00:11:35.09 and connect with friendly Christians. 00:11:35.12\00:11:37.66 Please pray for this center of influence 00:11:37.69\00:11:39.56 in the heart of Copenhagen where Adventists are following 00:11:39.59\00:11:42.83 Jesus' method and bringing people to Him. 00:11:42.86\00:11:47.51 When Ellen White talked about centers of influence, 00:11:47.54\00:11:49.60 she was talking about having things 00:11:49.63\00:11:51.17 such as restaurants, vegetarian cafes, reading rooms, 00:11:51.20\00:11:55.62 treatment rooms, whatever the need 00:11:55.65\00:11:57.76 is in the community then we connect those needs. 00:11:57.79\00:12:00.85 And it'll vary from community to community 00:12:00.88\00:12:03.08 and so I think we need to understand 00:12:03.11\00:12:05.21 the people in the community and what their needs are. 00:12:05.24\00:12:07.40 Yeah, now this is a concept that is actually 00:12:07.43\00:12:10.51 catching a lot of excitement among church leaders. 00:12:10.54\00:12:13.23 Let's have a look at a short video right now 00:12:13.26\00:12:15.92 that shows the excitement 00:12:15.95\00:12:18.04 among church leaders for this initiative. 00:12:18.07\00:12:21.14 Traditionally, Seventh-day Adventists 00:12:21.17\00:12:22.90 are allergic to city evangelism but Ellen White had been 00:12:22.93\00:12:28.08 most emphatic in stressing 00:12:28.11\00:12:31.21 the importance of urban ministry. 00:12:31.24\00:12:33.58 Ellen White has told us that 00:12:33.61\00:12:35.07 "When the cities are worked as God would have them, 00:12:35.10\00:12:38.49 the result will be the setting 00:12:38.52\00:12:39.79 in operation of a mighty movement 00:12:39.82\00:12:41.79 such as we have not yet witnessed." 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.47 Part of that mighty movement is to plant 00:12:43.50\00:12:46.20 centers of influence in the cities 00:12:46.23\00:12:48.96 that are gonna touch the lives of thousands of people. 00:12:48.99\00:12:52.79 Centers of influence are an opportunity for involvement. 00:12:52.82\00:12:56.59 Centers of influence are mentioned about 88 times 00:12:56.62\00:12:59.80 by Ellen White where she indicates 00:12:59.83\00:13:02.35 that we would have an opportunity 00:13:02.38\00:13:04.00 to learn the joys and learn 00:13:04.03\00:13:05.76 the sorrows of people in the cities. 00:13:05.79\00:13:08.38 I invite every single one of you 00:13:08.41\00:13:10.44 and with myself to be part of this effort 00:13:10.47\00:13:13.76 to plant centers of influence in the cities of the world 00:13:13.79\00:13:18.03 so that we can tell people that Jesus is coming soon. 00:13:18.06\00:13:21.60 So you see there Rick, 00:13:24.60\00:13:25.89 we're actually calling these Life Hope Centers. 00:13:25.92\00:13:27.87 Life Hope Centers. 00:13:27.90\00:13:29.07 So what's the idea of having this sort of branding? 00:13:29.10\00:13:32.85 Well, you know, when people go to some place 00:13:32.88\00:13:35.97 and they like it, they go to another city, 00:13:36.00\00:13:38.04 another part of town, they see the same logo and sign 00:13:38.07\00:13:41.11 and say, oh, I remember this, 00:13:41.14\00:13:42.76 I'm gonna go to this, I had a good experience. 00:13:42.79\00:13:45.07 And so we're hoping that this would carry through that, 00:13:45.10\00:13:47.61 there will be a branding and a common theme 00:13:47.64\00:13:50.45 in different places so even though 00:13:50.48\00:13:51.96 they may be doing slightly different treatments 00:13:51.99\00:13:53.80 or whatever or classes, that they'll know 00:13:53.83\00:13:56.60 that they can go down with that 00:13:56.63\00:13:57.68 same sort of quality of blessings. 00:13:57.71\00:14:00.32 Right, So we are starting to produce 00:14:00.35\00:14:03.92 a whole range of different curricular 00:14:03.95\00:14:05.70 for different projects, programs, activities, 00:14:05.73\00:14:08.59 ways we can work with the community. 00:14:08.62\00:14:10.52 You know the church for many years 00:14:10.55\00:14:12.74 has done a lot of things with parenting, health, 00:14:12.77\00:14:16.36 all of these things and a lot of times 00:14:16.39\00:14:18.38 it was directed out to the community some of 00:14:18.41\00:14:20.42 but a lot of it was internal church members 00:14:20.45\00:14:22.75 that come in here, church leaders do these things. 00:14:22.78\00:14:25.77 We're collecting a lot of these things 00:14:25.80\00:14:27.77 and editing them and putting really nice designs, 00:14:27.80\00:14:30.42 PowerPoint's, student workbooks 00:14:30.45\00:14:32.41 and making these available to Life Hope Centers 00:14:32.44\00:14:35.24 so that they can have classes on a variety of subjects. 00:14:35.27\00:14:38.78 So we're taking what are some are focused inwards 00:14:38.81\00:14:41.03 and turning it outwards to help people 00:14:41.06\00:14:43.57 all around the world in their communities. 00:14:43.60\00:14:45.50 For further information, where can we find that? 00:14:45.53\00:14:48.52 Well, you can go to Adventistmission.org. 00:14:48.55\00:14:50.70 Okay. Right now for further information. 00:14:50.73\00:14:52.55 And we're also working on lifehopecenters.org. 00:14:52.58\00:14:55.59 We're working on lifehopecenters.org 00:14:55.62\00:14:57.68 and that will be for local centers 00:14:57.71\00:14:59.63 to have their own website. 00:14:59.66\00:15:00.81 Good. Thanks for joining us, Rick. 00:15:00.84\00:15:02.82 This really is an exciting program. 00:15:02.85\00:15:04.75 It is something, you know 100 years ago, 00:15:04.78\00:15:06.98 Ellen White said that we have neglected the cities, 00:15:07.01\00:15:09.08 it's now time for us to do something about that, 00:15:09.11\00:15:11.91 to put Christ method into practice 00:15:11.94\00:15:13.68 which I say so often that we need to mingle, 00:15:13.71\00:15:16.55 we need to show sympathy, we need to minister the needs, 00:15:16.58\00:15:19.98 we need to win confidence 00:15:20.01\00:15:21.63 and then and only then we bid people to follow Jesus. 00:15:21.66\00:15:25.25 Please pray for this initiative. 00:15:25.28\00:15:27.31 My guest is Hans Olson who works with me 00:16:06.43\00:16:09.04 in the office of Adventist Mission. 00:16:09.07\00:16:10.40 Welcome, Hans. Yeah. 00:16:10.43\00:16:11.94 Not so long ago you visited 00:16:11.97\00:16:13.36 the Northern Asia Pacific region. Yes. 00:16:13.39\00:16:16.16 And you went to that big, huge country of China. Absolutely. 00:16:16.19\00:16:23.36 Just rapidly growing population. Right. 00:16:23.39\00:16:25.77 Tell us, what did you find there. 00:16:25.80\00:16:28.85 Wow, it's a big country that's for sure. 00:16:28.88\00:16:31.38 China, actually, we went to northwestern China first 00:16:31.41\00:16:36.24 to a community where there was a hill church, 00:16:36.27\00:16:41.01 up, up kind of up in the hills, it was actually 00:16:41.04\00:16:43.05 I think it was about 10,000 feet above sea level, 00:16:43.08\00:16:47.97 70 people live in this church, I mean, sorry, this village. 00:16:48.00\00:16:52.69 Church at the top of the mountain, 00:16:52.72\00:16:54.36 two-thirds of the villagers are members of that church 00:16:54.39\00:16:59.76 which has about 60 people, 00:16:59.79\00:17:01.93 remaining members of that church walk, 00:17:01.96\00:17:05.64 sometimes 3 hours, one way much of it uphill, 00:17:05.67\00:17:10.56 steep hill, narrow little road to go to church. 00:17:10.59\00:17:15.70 Dedicated, dedicated Christians, 00:17:15.73\00:17:17.92 it was amazing to worship with them, 00:17:17.95\00:17:19.53 they had a church choir that sounded 00:17:19.56\00:17:22.53 as good as any large city church choir 00:17:22.56\00:17:26.64 that you and I would have heard. 00:17:26.67\00:17:29.13 Okay, and then you went to more urban area? Yeah. 00:17:29.16\00:17:33.05 We went to Nanchang which is kind of central, central China, 00:17:33.08\00:17:39.88 not as developed maybe as a western city 00:17:39.91\00:17:44.10 but still a bustling town 00:17:44.13\00:17:46.06 and there was an Adventist church in that town. 00:17:46.09\00:17:48.67 But then we went couple hours outside and visited a woman 00:17:48.70\00:17:53.60 who is planted three different churches. 00:17:53.63\00:17:59.47 The first church was in a kind of a small property 00:17:59.50\00:18:06.22 owned by the lady who she's renting a room from 00:18:06.25\00:18:09.59 and very modest church but still a very nice church. 00:18:09.62\00:18:15.28 And then she's planted two more churches in that area. 00:18:15.31\00:18:19.82 So in about four year period-- so she's been very, very busy. 00:18:19.85\00:18:25.86 I was interesting when you said she, because in China, 00:18:25.89\00:18:29.10 we see that leadership of women impounding churches 00:18:29.13\00:18:32.66 all over the country. Yeah, in a certain way. 00:18:32.69\00:18:35.31 Some of these women are caring for congregations 00:18:35.34\00:18:38.01 with thousands of church members. 00:18:38.04\00:18:40.15 So we know that we probably have 00:18:40.18\00:18:45.05 maybe 400,000 church members in China 00:18:45.08\00:18:49.53 and we know that in some parts of the country, 00:18:49.56\00:18:53.36 they have greater freedom than other countries 00:18:53.39\00:18:55.96 but we're just so glad to see the growth 00:18:55.99\00:18:58.95 that's happening. Right. 00:18:58.98\00:19:00.32 Now, you went from China 00:19:00.35\00:19:01.72 but you also went to a very different country 00:19:01.75\00:19:04.22 just a neighbor of Korea, tell us about Korea. 00:19:04.25\00:19:08.08 Well, Korea, yeah, Korea is different. 00:19:08.11\00:19:10.94 Korea is very high-tech. Yes. 00:19:10.97\00:19:13.70 And--so that creates interesting challenges for mission. 00:19:13.73\00:19:18.02 But a lot of urban ministry going on there, 00:19:18.05\00:19:21.42 there is the Central Seoul Church 00:19:21.45\00:19:24.82 has started an elder ministry 00:19:24.85\00:19:26.38 'cause it's an underserved group 00:19:26.41\00:19:29.34 within the Adventist church. Elderly people? 00:19:29.37\00:19:31.49 Elderly people and they have a church just for them. 00:19:31.52\00:19:38.64 They have a feeding program, 00:19:38.67\00:19:42.34 lot of community service programs to reach out to them, 00:19:42.37\00:19:45.02 to give them, you know, a church family. 00:19:45.05\00:19:50.79 Also there's a homeless ministry, 00:19:50.82\00:19:54.05 they feed maybe a thousand people every Sabbath. 00:19:54.08\00:20:00.63 Fully funded by a church member 00:20:00.66\00:20:03.59 from Seoul, $4,500 a month, 00:20:03.62\00:20:08.96 program grown so big that she and her local church 00:20:08.99\00:20:11.92 can't even do it and they have to have to a group of churches, 00:20:11.95\00:20:14.70 Adventist churches in Korea come and help feed all of the people 00:20:14.73\00:20:19.25 they have so many people coming every Sabbath. 00:20:19.28\00:20:22.57 The church in Korea has historically been very strong 00:20:22.60\00:20:26.64 and is helping mission work all through that region. 00:20:26.67\00:20:31.48 What challenges do you see 00:20:32.77\00:20:34.69 that the church is facing in Korea now? 00:20:34.72\00:20:38.63 The church in Korea like many other places is becoming secular 00:20:38.66\00:20:43.78 and so they have the challenge of young people 00:20:43.81\00:20:49.17 staying in the church, and just continuing to grow, 00:20:49.20\00:20:56.07 you know, as wealth increases, as technology changes, 00:20:56.10\00:21:02.25 keeping people focused on the church 00:21:02.28\00:21:04.10 and not distracted by the world around them. 00:21:04.13\00:21:08.56 So you also briefly visited Hong Kong. Yeah. 00:21:08.59\00:21:12.34 Where Abram La Rue, a woodcutter, 00:21:12.37\00:21:14.91 just a lay person started work in that area. 00:21:14.94\00:21:17.90 Well, thank you so much, Hans, 00:21:17.93\00:21:19.21 for joining us and talking us about-- 00:21:19.24\00:21:21.17 tell us about this challenging area. 00:21:21.20\00:21:23.11 And the northern Asia Pacific region is a huge challenge, 00:21:23.14\00:21:28.15 a mission challenge, just millions and millions of people 00:21:28.18\00:21:31.49 many of whom have never even heard the name of Jesus Christ. 00:21:31.52\00:21:35.22 You travel in China and you see highways 00:21:35.25\00:21:37.28 after highways going up, highways coming in, 00:21:37.31\00:21:40.05 so many families who need to know 00:21:40.08\00:21:41.63 that a God who loves them 00:21:41.66\00:21:43.52 and Jesus coming to die for them. 00:21:43.55\00:21:46.10 Next up, we're going to travel to another country 00:21:46.13\00:21:49.48 within the Northern Asia Pacific region 00:21:49.51\00:21:51.74 to the country of Mongolia where not so long ago, 00:21:51.77\00:21:54.78 we had absolutely no Seventh-day Adventist believers. 00:21:54.81\00:21:58.31 On a typical Sabbath, you can see members 00:22:00.16\00:22:02.21 of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:22:02.24\00:22:03.72 meeting in a variety of locations 00:22:03.75\00:22:05.49 and structures around the world. 00:22:05.52\00:22:08.34 They may meet under a tree in Mozambique, 00:22:08.37\00:22:11.11 in a prison cell in Moldova, under a tarp in Mexico 00:22:11.14\00:22:16.06 or in a house church in Cambodia. 00:22:16.09\00:22:18.72 It doesn't matter where you worship, 00:22:18.75\00:22:21.02 what matters is that you are able 00:22:21.05\00:22:22.47 to worship together as a church family. 00:22:22.50\00:22:27.86 For Seventh-day Adventists in the country of Mongolia, 00:22:27.89\00:22:31.43 worshiping on the Sabbath is still a new experience. 00:22:31.46\00:22:35.32 The Adventist message was first brought to Mongolia in 1992 00:22:35.35\00:22:39.80 and the first members baptized in 1994. 00:22:39.83\00:22:43.65 Today, there are a handful of churches 00:22:43.68\00:22:45.80 and more than 1,200 members. 00:22:45.83\00:22:48.33 They worship in traditional church buildings, 00:22:48.36\00:22:50.90 in small school classrooms 00:22:50.93\00:22:53.08 and in traditional Mongolian houses called Ger's. 00:22:53.11\00:22:57.21 From the exterior, you wouldn't think that a Ger 00:22:57.24\00:22:59.67 would serve as a spiritual home to Adventist believers 00:22:59.70\00:23:03.30 but once you enter the surprisingly warm hut, 00:23:03.33\00:23:06.35 you are greeted by a young group of members. 00:23:06.38\00:23:09.46 Very quickly you will feel the warmth of the Christian love 00:23:09.49\00:23:12.55 that lives in the hearts of these new converts. 00:23:12.58\00:23:15.74 They open their Bibles and search for the truth 00:23:15.77\00:23:18.48 that lives within the pages of thin parchment. 00:23:18.51\00:23:21.82 Their faces light up as the young speaker talks 00:23:21.85\00:23:24.35 of love and forgiveness, 00:23:24.38\00:23:26.43 of hope and a new beginning in Jesus. 00:23:26.46\00:23:30.09 Your support of the mission work of the Adventist church 00:23:30.12\00:23:33.70 helps to spread the gospel of Jesus around the world, 00:23:33.73\00:23:37.61 just as Jesus spoke to His followers on the side of a hill. 00:23:37.64\00:23:41.45 Today, Seventh-day Adventist believers 00:23:41.48\00:23:43.95 share the same message all throughout the world. 00:23:43.98\00:23:47.44 Thank you, for your prayerful support of mission. 00:23:47.47\00:23:51.27 If you're enjoying inspiring stories 00:23:56.44\00:23:58.37 of Global Mission pioneers, 00:23:58.40\00:24:00.10 missionaries and mission in general, 00:24:00.13\00:24:02.59 then we would like to send you 00:24:02.62\00:24:04.19 00:24:22.92\00:24:27.06 Well, that's it for today's program 00:24:27.09\00:24:28.56 and I hope you've been inspired by what you've seen 00:24:28.59\00:24:31.12 and what you've heard. 00:24:31.15\00:24:32.31 From the countries of Asia to the cities of North America, 00:24:32.34\00:24:35.73 God's mission work is still moving forward. 00:24:35.76\00:24:39.61 So on behalf of Adventist missionaries 00:24:39.64\00:24:41.68 and church planters such as Global Mission pioneers 00:24:41.71\00:24:44.77 who are serving around the world, 00:24:44.80\00:24:46.65 thank you for your continuing prayers 00:24:46.68\00:24:49.10 and support for frontline mission. 00:24:49.13\00:24:51.80 Until next time, I'm Gary Krause for Adventist Mission. 00:24:51.83\00:24:55.03 God bless.
