A church reaching out to their community after disaster strikes 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.43 and a medical missionary couple 00:00:04.46\00:00:06.40 in the West African country of Cameroon, 00:00:06.43\00:00:08.89 coming up next on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:08.92\00:00:11.80 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:14.91\00:00:16.84 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:16.87\00:00:19.86 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, Go. 00:00:19.89\00:00:25.57 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:25.60\00:00:30.33 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:30.36\00:00:34.82 Hello, I'm Gary Krause 00:00:40.54\00:00:41.82 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:41.85\00:00:44.57 On today's program we'll meet Christina 00:00:44.60\00:00:46.83 a returned missionary, 00:00:46.86\00:00:48.45 who shares a touching story of how she reached out 00:00:48.48\00:00:51.89 to a family in their time of loss. 00:00:51.92\00:00:54.60 We'll also be talking with Myron Iseminger, 00:00:54.63\00:00:57.11 undersecretary 00:00:57.14\00:00:58.17 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:58.20\00:01:00.22 and a former missionary. 00:01:00.25\00:01:02.30 But first up, let's find out 00:01:02.33\00:01:04.24 how a congregation of Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:04.27\00:01:07.35 reached out to others in the aftermath of a tornado. 00:01:07.38\00:01:11.84 On April 25 to 28, 2011 a strong series of tornadoes 00:01:11.87\00:01:17.24 swept through seven states 00:01:17.27\00:01:18.84 in the south eastern part of the United States. 00:01:18.87\00:01:22.36 More than 330 tornadoes were observed 00:01:22.39\00:01:25.87 and more than 320 people lost their lives. 00:01:25.90\00:01:30.41 Hardest hit was the state of Alabama, 00:01:30.44\00:01:33.12 where more than 280 people died. 00:01:33.15\00:01:36.35 The cities of Tuscaloosa, 00:01:36.38\00:01:38.01 Birmingham and Huntsville were hardest hit. 00:01:38.04\00:01:41.10 For many it was a day they will never forget. 00:01:41.13\00:01:44.67 On April 27, 00:01:44.70\00:01:46.34 that was really a day that changed 00:01:46.37\00:01:48.12 a whole lot of people's perspectives, 00:01:48.15\00:01:51.49 not only physically but also spiritually as well. 00:01:51.52\00:01:56.28 Adventist Community Services along with many local 00:01:56.31\00:01:59.42 Seventh-day Adventist churches immediately sprang into action 00:01:59.45\00:02:03.20 and answered the call for help. 00:02:03.23\00:02:05.80 Local pathfinder groups helped to deliver 00:02:05.83\00:02:07.89 food and water to the affected areas. 00:02:07.92\00:02:10.33 Church members also worked in their local communities 00:02:10.36\00:02:13.41 to help those in need. 00:02:13.44\00:02:15.62 Pratt City on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama 00:02:15.65\00:02:19.46 faced some of the worst devastation 00:02:19.49\00:02:21.79 caused by the storms. 00:02:21.82\00:02:23.69 More than 200 homes were destroyed 00:02:23.72\00:02:25.86 in a few short minutes 00:02:25.89\00:02:27.57 forever changing the lives of those who live there 00:02:27.60\00:02:30.93 and those who responded. 00:02:30.96\00:02:33.36 Your heart go out to the people, 00:02:33.39\00:02:36.73 it helps you to grow as a Christian 00:02:36.76\00:02:38.96 and it also allow you to be 00:02:38.99\00:02:42.37 a better witness to the people 00:02:42.40\00:02:45.63 you've been through the couple of days 00:02:45.66\00:02:47.68 and so I was just excited to go out and help 00:02:47.71\00:02:51.83 and be like a missionary to the poor. 00:02:51.86\00:02:55.51 Adventist members were not immune to the damage 00:02:55.54\00:02:58.38 that the storm brought to Birmingham. 00:02:58.41\00:03:00.86 Many lost their homes 00:03:00.89\00:03:02.71 but they still made the best of the situation. 00:03:02.74\00:03:06.19 One of the members at our church was Abel, 00:03:06.22\00:03:08.82 he lost his home but he was able to help 00:03:08.85\00:03:11.41 rescue other people out of their homes 00:03:11.44\00:03:13.54 in light of the tornado that came. 00:03:13.57\00:03:18.13 Because we could begin hearing the cries 00:03:18.16\00:03:20.61 of our neighbors help, help, help. 00:03:20.64\00:03:23.74 So I ran across the street 00:03:23.77\00:03:26.24 and the neighbors directly across from me 00:03:26.27\00:03:28.88 their house had pancaked on top of them 00:03:28.91\00:03:31.13 because they were told to go out to the basement of your home, 00:03:31.16\00:03:33.60 but if you do that typically if something is going to fall 00:03:33.63\00:03:37.10 is gonna fall on top of them. 00:03:37.13\00:03:38.95 And I began to dig through the rubble 00:03:38.98\00:03:40.52 and I got a mother and her son out 00:03:40.55\00:03:42.74 because her husband who was a doctor 00:03:42.77\00:03:44.49 was working at one of the local hospitals. 00:03:44.52\00:03:47.33 Adventist Community Services was able to arrange 00:03:47.36\00:03:50.58 the use of a large warehouse in Birmingham 00:03:50.61\00:03:53.40 to help coordinate the sorting and distribution 00:03:53.43\00:03:55.92 of the relief supplies that were being donated 00:03:55.95\00:03:58.59 to those in need. 00:03:58.62\00:04:00.27 Wayne Blanding serves 00:04:00.30\00:04:01.65 as the coordinator of the warehouse. 00:04:01.68\00:04:04.62 Well, we distribute from here 00:04:04.65\00:04:06.91 everything from food items to personal care items 00:04:06.94\00:04:11.22 to large items like mattresses, water, tarps 00:04:11.25\00:04:17.33 with the whole spectrum it comes through here. 00:04:17.36\00:04:21.16 The tornado changed many people's lives, 00:04:21.19\00:04:24.58 both in good and bad ways. 00:04:24.61\00:04:27.43 But for those who were involved 00:04:27.46\00:04:29.05 in helping their local community, 00:04:29.08\00:04:30.98 they came away with a new sense of pride in their church. 00:04:31.01\00:04:35.66 And I think that's just the general 00:04:35.69\00:04:37.48 question attitude that which we have. 00:04:37.51\00:04:39.63 I think beyond being Adventist 00:04:39.66\00:04:41.60 our call is to be great Christians. 00:04:41.63\00:04:43.61 And in the calling of Christianity, 00:04:43.64\00:04:46.06 and not only in forms of Adventism 00:04:46.09\00:04:48.03 but it makes our Adventist church 00:04:48.06\00:04:49.66 stand out so much more not only 00:04:49.69\00:04:51.76 because of the message that we preach 00:04:51.79\00:04:54.03 but the way that we live. 00:04:54.06\00:04:55.99 We were alive, they were folk who were in danger. 00:04:56.02\00:04:58.97 So it was not even a second thought to try to help 00:04:59.00\00:05:01.91 because again that's what we're 00:05:01.94\00:05:03.18 here for to help one another. 00:05:03.21\00:05:04.56 Your support of the world budget and the mission offerings 00:05:04.59\00:05:08.68 help to support organizations like 00:05:08.71\00:05:10.88 Adventist Community Services as they strive 00:05:10.91\00:05:14.18 to reach out to a world in need. 00:05:14.21\00:05:16.78 Thank you for supporting 00:05:16.81\00:05:18.53 the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:05:18.56\00:05:21.52 It's my pleasure to introduce Bill and Trixy, 00:05:28.58\00:05:30.93 who are working as missionaries 00:05:30.96\00:05:33.97 in the country of Cameroon in Africa. 00:05:34.00\00:05:37.41 Thanks very much for joining us. 00:05:37.44\00:05:38.77 You know, the word missionary 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.03 has a bit of a negative feel for lot of people 00:05:40.06\00:05:43.14 because of, you know, 00:05:43.17\00:05:44.59 in past history and even today sometimes 00:05:44.62\00:05:47.67 people are not very sensitive of other people's culture 00:05:47.70\00:05:51.09 and come and hit people over the head with the Bible. 00:05:51.12\00:05:53.72 I'm guessing that's not your approach to ministry. 00:05:53.75\00:05:55.93 I don't believe-- No, it is not, it is not. 00:05:57.77\00:06:00.52 Let me just get a bit of context 00:06:00.55\00:06:02.37 here that Bill and Trixy are working at a hospital, 00:06:02.40\00:06:05.69 a mission hospital in the Cameroon. 00:06:05.72\00:06:07.62 And I guess most of your day is just busy, busy, busy 00:06:07.65\00:06:12.93 seeing patients and making sure 00:06:12.96\00:06:14.47 everything flows correctly. 00:06:14.50\00:06:16.92 Largely, I would say Trixy, has the patient for. 00:06:16.95\00:06:20.39 My day has seeing patients. 00:06:20.42\00:06:23.32 And my day is looking 00:06:23.35\00:06:26.83 at how we were growing making sure 00:06:26.86\00:06:30.11 we're breaking even, what do we need to do 00:06:30.14\00:06:33.41 to make movement towards the future. 00:06:33.44\00:06:35.53 And so for me that's been creating mission statement, 00:06:35.56\00:06:38.40 we are looking at value statements, 00:06:38.43\00:06:40.63 things that will last long after we go 00:06:40.66\00:06:44.66 and that don't even represent us but the institution. 00:06:44.69\00:06:48.18 Wonderful. Yeah. 00:06:48.21\00:06:49.52 So, Trixy, you could have settled 00:06:49.55\00:06:52.50 in the United States of America, worked as a doctor. 00:06:52.53\00:06:55.07 You could have had a very comfortable life 00:06:55.10\00:06:57.63 earning more money than I do. 00:06:57.66\00:06:59.79 But why did you choose to go to Africa 00:06:59.82\00:07:02.79 to work at a mission hospital? 00:07:02.82\00:07:04.18 I have always wanted to go since undergraduate 00:07:05.65\00:07:08.55 and I felt that God gave me a desire, 00:07:08.58\00:07:13.14 He put that in my heart and He kept that desire going 00:07:13.17\00:07:17.37 through medical school 00:07:17.40\00:07:19.66 and even through residency training. 00:07:19.69\00:07:22.37 And, you know, God fulfills you where you are. 00:07:22.40\00:07:26.59 And I might just think that's where He has called me for now 00:07:26.62\00:07:29.66 and I'm happy where He called me. 00:07:29.69\00:07:33.43 Now, Loma Linda University is a tremendous support 00:07:33.46\00:07:37.08 for Adventist Mission around the world. 00:07:37.11\00:07:40.63 How did it help you spiritually and in your goals? 00:07:40.66\00:07:44.97 Loma Linda is a very nurturing environment 00:07:46.63\00:07:49.93 for teaching young doctors how to interact 00:07:49.96\00:07:55.28 with patients and colleagues on multiple levels 00:07:55.31\00:07:59.88 including how to minister to people 00:07:59.91\00:08:01.50 spiritually, physically, mentally. 00:08:01.53\00:08:05.12 It also leaves you with people in your life 00:08:05.15\00:08:08.15 that you will forever be in contact with, 00:08:08.18\00:08:10.40 mentors, friends, colleagues 00:08:10.43\00:08:13.63 that are always there you know, 00:08:13.66\00:08:16.06 there are people I know for the rest of my life. 00:08:16.09\00:08:18.23 And so that's a big support as well. 00:08:19.32\00:08:21.23 Sure. 00:08:21.26\00:08:22.77 The day to day rush of your work, 00:08:22.80\00:08:26.13 there must be times when you get discouraged. 00:08:26.16\00:08:29.10 How did you, I mean, are there times when 00:08:29.13\00:08:31.46 you are lonely or why am I here, 00:08:31.49\00:08:34.08 do you have those moments? 00:08:34.11\00:08:35.16 Yes, we do. Sure. 00:08:35.19\00:08:37.43 Don't know about lonely 00:08:37.46\00:08:38.49 but definitely why am I here? 00:08:38.52\00:08:41.70 What gets you through that? 00:08:41.73\00:08:42.81 I mean, part of it is 00:08:45.73\00:08:47.64 for me it's looking back and going, okay, 00:08:47.67\00:08:51.29 this is where God called me and looking back and seeing 00:08:51.32\00:08:55.04 how He calls us, that's pretty miraculous. 00:08:55.07\00:08:57.23 If you look at all the various steps 00:08:57.26\00:08:59.06 that brought us to Cameroon and that have kept us there. 00:08:59.09\00:09:01.86 It's just amazing. 00:09:01.89\00:09:03.23 So part of it is just looking back 00:09:03.26\00:09:05.09 and being very sure that this is where God's called us. 00:09:05.12\00:09:08.90 And part of it, you know, 00:09:08.93\00:09:10.50 it's just also trying to step back sometimes 00:09:10.53\00:09:12.99 and you know, do your own 00:09:13.02\00:09:15.93 personal searching on your own talk with God. 00:09:15.96\00:09:20.90 And then also from friends, friends and family, 00:09:20.93\00:09:24.07 colleagues, you know, 00:09:24.10\00:09:27.38 there are people sometimes you just have to reach out to 00:09:27.41\00:09:30.15 and it would be like why am I doing this again? 00:09:30.18\00:09:32.69 Can you share a story of someone 00:09:33.88\00:09:37.19 where you feel that you were able to make 00:09:37.22\00:09:38.93 a positive impact on through your ministry there? 00:09:38.96\00:09:42.61 Wow. One? 00:09:42.64\00:09:45.20 Well, I think you probably have more health stories. 00:09:48.79\00:09:51.98 Health stories, yes. 00:09:52.01\00:09:53.30 But you have many people 00:09:53.33\00:09:54.36 you have also impacted. 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.22 A lot of for me because I don't 00:09:56.25\00:09:59.85 do the health sector. 00:09:59.88\00:10:03.09 It's looking at the conversations. 00:10:03.12\00:10:07.47 And sometimes you don't realize 00:10:07.50\00:10:09.34 the impact you have until much later 00:10:09.37\00:10:12.31 and sometimes through someone else 00:10:12.34\00:10:15.04 and so when you have the opportunity 00:10:15.07\00:10:19.77 to explore life with someone. 00:10:19.80\00:10:24.17 One of our volunteer friends, 00:10:25.34\00:10:30.32 independent volunteers, atheist 00:10:30.35\00:10:33.24 and she was having dinner with us and saying, 00:10:33.27\00:10:37.30 I needed you today 00:10:37.33\00:10:39.19 because there were these two people conversing 00:10:39.22\00:10:43.24 and they were basically beating each other up with the Bible 00:10:43.27\00:10:45.90 and I know enough to know that it's about love. 00:10:45.93\00:10:50.09 I need a Jew there to help 00:10:50.12\00:10:53.56 give me the right text you know, 00:10:53.59\00:10:55.11 to help and so then you have over dinner 00:10:55.14\00:10:59.10 basically invitation to Bible study without Bible study. 00:10:59.13\00:11:02.07 Yeah. 00:11:02.10\00:11:03.14 And those happen actually more often 00:11:03.17\00:11:05.68 than I actually have counted. 00:11:05.71\00:11:07.63 I mean, it's frequent, 00:11:07.66\00:11:08.69 where you just have the opportunity 00:11:08.72\00:11:10.86 to explore what the scripture says 00:11:10.89\00:11:14.37 about love and compassion and service. 00:11:14.40\00:11:16.85 Great. 00:11:16.88\00:11:18.26 Thank you so much for joining us today. 00:11:18.29\00:11:20.12 I appreciate your sharing with us. 00:11:20.15\00:11:21.52 Thank you. 00:11:21.55\00:11:22.75 And to viewers at home, please, 00:11:22.78\00:11:25.62 remember people such as Bill and Trixy, 00:11:25.65\00:11:28.87 who are in the frontlines of mission 00:11:28.90\00:11:30.47 face challenges everyday. 00:11:30.50\00:11:32.12 They need your prayers, they need your support. 00:11:32.15\00:11:34.43 My guest is Pastor Myron Iseminger 00:12:13.90\00:12:17.07 who is the undersecretary for the General Conference 00:12:17.10\00:12:20.14 of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:12:20.17\00:12:22.64 This means Myron, that you are very involved 00:12:22.67\00:12:24.72 in the mission program of the church around the world. 00:12:24.75\00:12:28.00 I had a lot of questions to ask you but first up, 00:12:28.03\00:12:30.10 what's this shirt that you are wearing? 00:12:30.13\00:12:32.02 Well, this shirt comes from the Philippines 00:12:32.05\00:12:35.05 and it looks cool and it is a little cooler 00:12:35.08\00:12:38.28 than wearing a jacket but it is their formal wear. 00:12:38.31\00:12:41.47 Yes, so you get to preach in that 00:12:41.50\00:12:42.81 when you are in the Philippines. 00:12:42.84\00:12:43.87 That's right, no ties there. 00:12:43.90\00:12:45.16 Any plans for introducing that to the United States? 00:12:45.19\00:12:47.91 I would love to. 00:12:47.94\00:12:49.66 I wear this often as I have an opportunity. 00:12:49.69\00:12:51.46 I'm sure you do. 00:12:51.49\00:12:52.94 Now you were working for sometime in Southeast Asia. 00:12:52.97\00:12:56.26 You were based in the Philippines but your 00:12:56.29\00:12:59.17 jurisdiction was much of Southeast Asia. 00:12:59.20\00:13:02.34 Now what was your role there? 00:13:02.37\00:13:05.45 My role was more of a supportive role. 00:13:05.48\00:13:08.16 I got the privilege of supporting the missionaries 00:13:08.19\00:13:11.48 who are working across that region of the world. 00:13:11.51\00:13:13.90 That which brings up an interesting point 00:13:13.93\00:13:16.00 that many of our missionaries are involved in 00:13:16.03\00:13:18.25 what we call frontline work 00:13:18.28\00:13:19.58 in terms of their church planting. 00:13:19.61\00:13:21.83 They are starting new groups, groups of believers, 00:13:21.86\00:13:23.79 there are overseeing pioneers etcetera. 00:13:23.82\00:13:26.26 But others like you were in that area were 00:13:26.29\00:13:30.28 playing a support role, how do you keep your, 00:13:30.31\00:13:32.80 the balance between a desk job 00:13:32.83\00:13:35.49 but still being involved in mission? 00:13:35.52\00:13:38.56 Well, one thing I did besides, 00:13:38.59\00:13:40.48 you know, the normal day to day 00:13:40.51\00:13:42.05 getting acquainted with your neighbors 00:13:42.08\00:13:44.13 and the people you interact with 00:13:44.16\00:13:46.00 was that I tried every year 00:13:46.03\00:13:47.76 to conduct at least one series of evangelistic meetings 00:13:47.79\00:13:51.02 somewhere within the region. 00:13:51.05\00:13:52.68 Okay, tell us a bit more about that. 00:13:52.71\00:13:55.38 Well, I had some great experiences. 00:13:55.41\00:13:58.00 One year we started the night after the largest typhoon 00:13:58.03\00:14:02.70 for years that come through Manila 00:14:02.73\00:14:04.98 and so we spent a whole week without electricity. 00:14:05.01\00:14:09.50 So we ran our power basic projector off of the car 00:14:09.53\00:14:16.69 and then inverters there. 00:14:16.72\00:14:18.37 And that was an interesting experience. 00:14:18.40\00:14:20.69 Oh, sure. 00:14:20.72\00:14:22.36 But another year I went down 00:14:22.39\00:14:24.69 to the southernmost island of the Philippines, Mindanao 00:14:24.72\00:14:28.32 and had a series of meetings there 00:14:28.35\00:14:31.43 based on the academy campus. 00:14:31.46\00:14:33.58 And it was a great experience. 00:14:33.61\00:14:36.78 There were of course a lot of young people 00:14:36.81\00:14:38.97 coming to the meetings. 00:14:39.00\00:14:40.58 It was right at the close of the school year, 00:14:40.61\00:14:42.96 so many of them were quite busy with their studies, 00:14:42.99\00:14:46.53 but we also had a lady that brought 00:14:46.56\00:14:48.72 a whole jeepney load of college students 00:14:48.75\00:14:52.96 that were finishing up. 00:14:52.99\00:14:54.58 And there was one in particular that really 00:14:54.61\00:14:59.31 stood out in my mind and experience I had there. 00:14:59.34\00:15:02.60 Tell me about that? Okay. 00:15:02.63\00:15:04.60 We had been going through the series for probably 00:15:05.77\00:15:09.35 about ten nights total and I had scheduled a night off. 00:15:09.38\00:15:14.03 Well, the pastor came to me and said 00:15:14.06\00:15:16.48 the people don't want a night off, 00:15:16.51\00:15:18.22 they want, you know, to hear another sermon. 00:15:18.25\00:15:21.49 And so I prayed about it and said well, 00:15:21.52\00:15:24.10 what topic should I preach about? 00:15:24.13\00:15:26.55 The previous weekend I preached about baptism 00:15:26.58\00:15:29.67 and had a call and many of the young people 00:15:29.70\00:15:32.97 had come forward to be baptized 00:15:33.00\00:15:35.34 and we had a small baptism there, 00:15:35.37\00:15:37.79 but I felt impressed to preach again explaining 00:15:37.82\00:15:42.02 the importance of baptism and we actually 00:15:42.05\00:15:44.51 focused on Paul and Silas 00:15:44.54\00:15:47.14 when they were in jail in Philippi. 00:15:47.17\00:15:49.90 The earthquake came, the jailer was ready 00:15:49.93\00:15:53.33 to kill himself 'cause he was sure 00:15:53.36\00:15:55.66 that his prisoners had escaped 00:15:55.69\00:15:58.03 but when he found that they were all there, 00:15:58.06\00:15:59.84 Paul had a chance, a teachable moment 00:15:59.87\00:16:02.94 and he was converted 00:16:02.97\00:16:04.95 but he wanted to be baptized that night, 00:16:04.98\00:16:07.12 they couldn't wait until the next day. 00:16:07.15\00:16:09.46 And so as I shared that I again called 00:16:09.49\00:16:12.87 and this time one of the students 00:16:12.90\00:16:15.43 that had not come forward before came forward, 00:16:15.46\00:16:18.88 her name was Jenalyn. 00:16:18.91\00:16:20.68 And I found out later that she had been raised 00:16:20.71\00:16:24.80 in an Adventist home but had drifted away. 00:16:24.83\00:16:28.55 She gotten into college 00:16:28.58\00:16:30.03 and just too many things happening. 00:16:30.06\00:16:33.64 Her final exam was the following day 00:16:33.67\00:16:36.20 and she was planning to go back to her home territory 00:16:36.23\00:16:40.29 which was quite sometime place away. 00:16:40.32\00:16:43.89 And but that night the Holy Spirit 00:16:43.92\00:16:46.47 really spoke to her and as a pastor 00:16:46.50\00:16:50.10 visited with her after the call, 00:16:50.13\00:16:52.66 he found out that she wouldn't be there to be baptized later on 00:16:52.69\00:16:57.48 and that story that you know, 00:16:57.51\00:17:00.69 there is water, let's be baptized 00:17:00.72\00:17:03.08 really touched her heart. 00:17:03.11\00:17:04.14 And so she asked can I be baptized tonight. 00:17:04.17\00:17:07.62 We went and checked the baptistery 00:17:07.65\00:17:10.30 because we didn't know if there was water there, 00:17:10.33\00:17:12.68 but there still was water from few days before 00:17:12.71\00:17:15.20 when we had conducted the baptism 00:17:15.23\00:17:17.54 and the choir was still there practicing, 00:17:17.57\00:17:20.61 so they gathered around 00:17:20.64\00:17:22.35 and we were able to baptize her that night. 00:17:22.38\00:17:25.87 She of course knew the beliefs and doctrines 00:17:25.90\00:17:30.00 but really the Holy Spirit spoke to her 00:17:30.03\00:17:33.10 and it's so neat to be a channel 00:17:33.13\00:17:36.35 that the Holy Spirit can work through. 00:17:36.38\00:17:38.71 And just icing on the cake 00:17:38.74\00:17:40.65 when we were filling out the paper work you know, 00:17:40.68\00:17:42.89 she put down her birth date and so forth 00:17:42.92\00:17:45.75 and I looked at the date and I realized 00:17:45.78\00:17:48.03 that that date was her birthday. 00:17:48.06\00:17:50.80 So it was not only her birthday 00:17:50.83\00:17:53.92 but it was her new birth day as well. 00:17:53.95\00:17:58.12 Wonderful. 00:17:58.15\00:17:59.18 This sort of memories that you cherish 00:17:59.21\00:18:01.04 from your time in mission service. 00:18:01.07\00:18:02.71 Myron, the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:18:04.23\00:18:06.33 runs a large mission program. 00:18:06.36\00:18:09.03 How do we care for missionaries? 00:18:09.06\00:18:10.41 For example, how are missionaries 00:18:10.44\00:18:12.26 prepared before they sent overseas? 00:18:12.29\00:18:14.60 One of the programs we have is 00:18:14.63\00:18:18.55 part of the Institute of World Mission. 00:18:18.58\00:18:20.72 And there is a quite extensive training 00:18:20.75\00:18:23.68 that goes to the missionaries before they go. 00:18:23.71\00:18:26.65 They spend at least three weeks 00:18:26.68\00:18:28.53 in a live in program that teaches them 00:18:28.56\00:18:31.53 how to relate to the culture and so forth. 00:18:31.56\00:18:34.68 We also give opportunity for language study 00:18:34.71\00:18:39.21 which varies on the length of time for that. 00:18:39.24\00:18:42.95 Okay, now when they are in the field, 00:18:42.98\00:18:45.33 what sort of support do we provide? 00:18:45.36\00:18:47.97 Well-- We pay for them? 00:18:48.00\00:18:50.62 Right. Yeah. We support them. 00:18:50.65\00:18:52.82 We try to visit them when we have opportunities 00:18:52.85\00:18:55.69 and we do give them opportunity 00:18:55.72\00:18:59.05 to have a vacation every year to go back 00:18:59.08\00:19:03.06 and spend some time with their families 00:19:03.09\00:19:04.67 who are also sacrificing when the missionary 00:19:04.70\00:19:07.71 goes out you know, 00:19:07.74\00:19:09.09 grandparents can't see their grandkids and so forth. 00:19:09.12\00:19:12.14 Now what about them when they finally come home, 00:19:12.17\00:19:15.12 do we do anything to help them 00:19:15.15\00:19:17.24 prepare for coming back home? 00:19:17.27\00:19:19.72 We do also again through the Institute of World Mission 00:19:19.75\00:19:22.59 have a reentry seminar that many of them 00:19:22.62\00:19:25.83 are able to participate in and they have said 00:19:25.86\00:19:29.43 that that's very important as well, 00:19:29.46\00:19:31.46 the reverse culture shock of coming back to your culture. 00:19:31.49\00:19:34.67 Myron, thank you so much for sharing with us today, 00:19:34.70\00:19:37.35 I appreciate it. 00:19:37.38\00:19:38.50 And viewers at home, please remember 00:19:38.53\00:19:41.85 the missionaries around the world in your prayers 00:19:41.88\00:19:45.17 and there are so many opportunities for missionaries, 00:19:45.20\00:19:49.04 but we don't have the funding in place. 00:19:49.07\00:19:50.91 Pray that God will provide means for this to happen. 00:19:50.94\00:19:54.07 She had been pushing at home for 10 hours. 00:20:05.31\00:20:08.12 The family brought the woman to the hospital. 00:20:10.07\00:20:13.01 I talk to the nurses they said that they were trying 00:20:13.04\00:20:16.14 to call for a doctor and they couldn't 00:20:16.17\00:20:19.56 find a doctor that could come. 00:20:19.59\00:20:21.59 Kristina Muehlhauser, has just returned 00:20:26.26\00:20:28.43 with her family to their home in Maine. 00:20:28.46\00:20:30.49 For the past seven years she, her husband and their daughter 00:20:34.85\00:20:38.70 have been working as missionaries 00:20:38.73\00:20:40.33 in the country of Uganda. 00:20:40.36\00:20:42.55 Kristina volunteered 00:20:42.58\00:20:43.75 at the government clinic as a midwife. 00:20:43.78\00:20:45.90 Two hours later a doctor arrived 00:20:50.21\00:20:52.85 and they began cesarean operation. 00:20:52.88\00:20:55.10 They put her completely under anesthesia 00:20:56.34\00:20:59.65 and they delivered a healthy fat baby girl. 00:20:59.68\00:21:05.68 And the next morning when I came back, 00:21:12.31\00:21:15.11 I went to check on her and her mother, 00:21:15.14\00:21:19.53 the grandmother of the baby was there 00:21:19.56\00:21:22.26 and the grandmother of the baby 00:21:22.29\00:21:23.84 couldn't speak English but by signs she told, 00:21:23.87\00:21:28.34 you know, showed me the baby 00:21:28.37\00:21:30.85 and with tears that that baby was dead.
