I'm standing here 00:00:06.64\00:00:07.67 in front of a Seventh-day Adventist church in China. 00:00:07.70\00:00:10.70 Thirteen years ago, 00:00:10.73\00:00:12.07 Seventh-day Adventist members 00:00:12.10\00:00:13.88 carried the materials for this church 00:00:13.91\00:00:15.80 40 minutes of the side of a mountain. 00:00:15.83\00:00:18.28 We will hear more about it. 00:00:18.31\00:00:19.41 For "Global Mission Snapshots" I'm Rick Kajiura. 00:00:19.44\00:00:21.94 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:27.20\00:00:29.71 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:29.74\00:00:32.63 He gave us a mission. Jesus said, go. 00:00:32.66\00:00:37.85 Go unto all the world, telling them of His love. 00:00:37.88\00:00:42.78 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:42.81\00:00:46.67 Hello, I'm Gary Krause 00:00:51.92\00:00:53.40 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:53.43\00:00:55.93 where we take you to the frontlines 00:00:55.96\00:00:57.75 of Adventist Mission around the world. 00:00:57.78\00:01:00.74 More than 1.3 billion people live in China, 00:01:00.77\00:01:04.25 the world's most populated country. 00:01:04.28\00:01:06.79 Despite many challenges 00:01:06.82\00:01:08.30 the Christian church is growing in China 00:01:08.33\00:01:10.95 and some predict that it's on track 00:01:10.98\00:01:12.84 to become the largest center 00:01:12.87\00:01:14.74 of Christianity in the entire world. 00:01:14.77\00:01:17.81 On today's program, Rick Kajiura, 00:01:17.84\00:01:19.72 Adventist mission communication director 00:01:19.75\00:01:22.30 reports on his recent visit to China. 00:01:22.33\00:01:25.30 We will also meet a couple heading 00:01:25.33\00:01:26.73 as missionaries to Thailand 00:01:26.76\00:01:28.88 and we travel to Adventist center 00:01:28.91\00:01:30.92 in South Korea 00:01:30.95\00:01:32.56 that's helping migrant workers re-establish their lives. 00:01:32.59\00:01:36.65 But first up, let's visit an Adventist school in Myanmar, 00:01:36.68\00:01:40.84 a Southeast Asia country 00:01:40.87\00:01:42.78 known to many of us as Burma. 00:01:42.81\00:01:45.65 Earlier this year, this video was shared 00:01:45.68\00:01:47.59 with Adventist churches around the world 00:01:47.62\00:01:50.04 that gave a special offering to help this school. 00:01:50.07\00:01:54.72 The country of Myanmar is located 00:01:54.75\00:01:57.03 between the countries of China, India, 00:01:57.06\00:01:59.67 Bangladesh, Thailand and Laos. 00:01:59.70\00:02:02.68 Its coastline lies on the Bay of Bengal 00:02:02.71\00:02:05.43 and the Andaman Sea. 00:02:05.46\00:02:07.52 Home to more than 59 million people, 00:02:07.55\00:02:10.68 it is one of the poor nations in this division. 00:02:10.71\00:02:13.71 And it has seen political and economic strives 00:02:13.74\00:02:15.97 since its creation in 1948. 00:02:16.00\00:02:19.37 The capital city Yangon is a bustling mixture of cars, 00:02:19.40\00:02:23.43 motorbikes and pedestrians. 00:02:23.46\00:02:26.01 The majority of the people 00:02:26.04\00:02:27.23 who live in Myanmar are Buddhists 00:02:27.26\00:02:29.38 and Yangon is home to the giant pagoda temple. 00:02:29.41\00:02:32.78 Every day people come here to pray 00:02:38.18\00:02:40.76 and offer up incense to Buddha. 00:02:40.79\00:02:43.35 The golden temple is an impressive landmark 00:02:43.38\00:02:46.20 on the Yangon's skyline. 00:02:46.23\00:02:49.01 On the outskirts of town 00:02:49.04\00:02:50.99 is the Yangon Adventist seminary. 00:02:51.02\00:02:53.75 Currently the school is housed 00:02:53.78\00:02:55.29 in a series of small buildings 00:02:55.32\00:02:57.37 and the classrooms are tightly packed 00:02:57.40\00:02:59.92 and full of children eager to learn. 00:02:59.95\00:03:02.99 They study math, language arts including English, science 00:03:03.02\00:03:07.17 and of course they learn about Jesus. 00:03:07.20\00:03:10.75 They also love to play. 00:03:10.78\00:03:12.76 The Yangon Adventist seminary 00:03:16.41\00:03:18.39 has outgrown its current physical plans. 00:03:18.42\00:03:21.42 The school has more than 450 students 00:03:21.45\00:03:24.60 and there is a long waiting list of families 00:03:24.63\00:03:27.26 eager to have their children attend the school. 00:03:27.29\00:03:29.74 People send their children here for three reasons. 00:03:34.73\00:03:37.63 The first is that they like 00:03:37.66\00:03:38.91 the Christian values that we teach 00:03:38.94\00:03:40.78 because they feel that this will help their children 00:03:40.81\00:03:42.83 grow up to be better citizens. 00:03:42.86\00:03:45.17 The second is that we teach English, 00:03:45.20\00:03:47.40 something that the government school do not offer. 00:03:47.43\00:03:50.73 We also have relationships 00:03:50.76\00:03:52.01 with other schools outside Myanmar, 00:03:52.04\00:03:54.13 where the children can continue their studies 00:03:54.16\00:03:56.00 after graduating from here. 00:03:56.03\00:03:58.74 The majority of the students here 00:03:58.77\00:04:00.23 come from non-Adventist homes, 00:04:00.26\00:04:02.68 so the school plays a major role 00:04:02.71\00:04:04.76 in reaching into the community. 00:04:04.79\00:04:07.24 Every morning, the children meet for worship 00:04:07.27\00:04:09.99 where they sing songs that tell of Jesus' love. 00:04:10.02\00:04:12.74 Your 13th Sabbath offering this quarter 00:04:29.19\00:04:31.13 will help to build a new school building, 00:04:31.16\00:04:33.96 so the Yangon Adventist seminary 00:04:33.99\00:04:35.82 can offer an Adventist education to more students. 00:04:35.85\00:04:39.60 This school serves as a wonderful example 00:04:39.63\00:04:42.07 of how education can be outreach to communities 00:04:42.10\00:04:45.07 that are sometimes hard to reach. 00:04:45.10\00:04:47.88 Please pray for the people in Myanmar 00:04:47.91\00:04:50.33 and pray for the Yangon Adventist School 00:04:50.36\00:04:52.99 as it continues its role of teaching 00:04:53.02\00:04:55.03 young people through Christian education. 00:04:55.06\00:04:57.29 My guest is Rick Kajiura, 00:05:00.90\00:05:02.63 who is a colleague and director of communication 00:05:02.66\00:05:06.43 for the office of Adventist Mission 00:05:06.46\00:05:07.78 of the General Conference. 00:05:07.81\00:05:09.29 Rick, glad you could join us. 00:05:09.32\00:05:10.57 It's good to be here, Gary. 00:05:10.60\00:05:11.96 Now, Rick, with this program 00:05:11.99\00:05:14.45 we try to get out the story of mission. 00:05:14.48\00:05:16.99 What the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:05:17.02\00:05:18.52 is doing in such a broad landscape of things 00:05:18.55\00:05:22.15 and your role is to oversee that 00:05:22.18\00:05:24.61 and we have websites, we have T.V program, 00:05:24.64\00:05:28.37 Adventist mission DVD, facebook, list goes on. 00:05:28.40\00:05:32.71 What are we trying to achieve in talking about mission? 00:05:32.74\00:05:36.63 You know, there are so many people 00:05:36.66\00:05:38.10 who think that the Adventist church 00:05:38.13\00:05:41.26 really isn't doing that much in mission 00:05:41.29\00:05:43.28 that the days of mission are yesterday, 00:05:43.31\00:05:45.56 but the challenges are in their backyard. 00:05:45.59\00:05:47.72 And well, that's true that there are challenges everywhere, 00:05:47.75\00:05:50.42 there are still certain areas of the world 00:05:50.45\00:05:52.90 where the challenges are massive. 00:05:52.93\00:05:55.74 Where the populations are, 00:05:55.77\00:05:57.98 you know, 80, 90% non-Christian 00:05:58.01\00:06:01.14 who don't have that Christian background, 00:06:01.17\00:06:03.23 who don't have the exposure 00:06:03.26\00:06:04.90 to the message of the hope in Jesus. 00:06:04.93\00:06:07.11 And so we at least, at least need to give them 00:06:07.14\00:06:09.19 the opportunity to have a relationship with Jesus 00:06:09.22\00:06:13.73 to hear about Him to even know that He, 00:06:13.76\00:06:16.48 you know, came and died for us. 00:06:16.51\00:06:18.59 Now, you were telling me not so long ago about 00:06:18.62\00:06:20.95 you were sitting in church one day and the pastor said 00:06:20.98\00:06:24.21 something that made you sit up, what was that? 00:06:24.24\00:06:26.05 Yeah, I was sitting in church one day 00:06:26.08\00:06:27.91 and the pastor said that the world is reached 00:06:27.94\00:06:30.81 and he cited, you know, the church statistics 00:06:30.84\00:06:33.21 of how many countries, 00:06:33.24\00:06:34.70 but you know when you look at 00:06:34.73\00:06:35.76 some of those countries and some of the cities. 00:06:35.79\00:06:38.49 You know, our presence there is very small 00:06:38.52\00:06:40.33 when you have populations in the billion, 00:06:40.36\00:06:43.27 you know like China 1.3 billion 00:06:43.30\00:06:45.76 and then you consider you know other places. 00:06:45.79\00:06:49.39 Well, even though you may have a church 00:06:49.42\00:06:51.10 or two churches or three churches 00:06:51.13\00:06:53.64 with populations in the billions. 00:06:53.67\00:06:55.03 So many people still don't know Jesus. 00:06:55.06\00:06:57.45 Well, that's a good leading to our topic 00:06:57.48\00:06:59.68 which is China and I can recall 00:06:59.71\00:07:02.25 driving down massive new highways in China 00:07:02.28\00:07:05.87 and just seen apartment block after apartment block towers 00:07:05.90\00:07:09.70 with thousands of people 00:07:09.73\00:07:11.51 and they are just been set up all along the road there 00:07:11.54\00:07:16.32 and we know that these apartment blocks 00:07:16.35\00:07:19.70 are like mini towns with no believers in them. 00:07:19.73\00:07:23.12 And they are city after city 00:07:23.15\00:07:24.41 where more than a million people, no believers. 00:07:24.44\00:07:27.45 That's absolutely right 00:07:27.48\00:07:28.51 and we saw that when we were there too. 00:07:28.54\00:07:30.73 In fact, we drove past a lot of them 00:07:30.76\00:07:33.78 to visit one area where there is a church 00:07:33.81\00:07:36.69 and this church was on a mountain top 00:07:36.72\00:07:38.46 and it was Miao village and when they took us there, 00:07:38.49\00:07:41.81 they said now are you guys prepared to walk 00:07:41.84\00:07:44.91 because it's a 40 minute walk up this mountain. 00:07:44.94\00:07:47.93 And we said yeah, we are prepared to walk 00:07:47.96\00:07:50.32 but when we got there 00:07:50.35\00:07:51.38 they drove us part way up that mountain 00:07:51.41\00:07:53.46 so we didn't have to walk for 40 miles. 00:07:53.49\00:07:55.80 40 miles? I mean 40-40 minutes, sorry. 00:07:55.83\00:07:58.43 I was impressed for a little while there. 00:07:58.46\00:08:00.27 Yeah, I would have been too. 00:08:00.30\00:08:02.14 A 40 minute walk up that mountain 00:08:02.17\00:08:04.29 but I tell you with some of those drop offs 00:08:04.32\00:08:06.21 and the trucks sliding around 00:08:06.24\00:08:07.87 you know, you kind of wish sometimes 00:08:07.90\00:08:09.85 that may be we should have walked. 00:08:09.88\00:08:11.61 But I tell you when we got to the top of that mountain 00:08:11.64\00:08:13.70 it was Miao village up there which is a minority group 00:08:13.73\00:08:16.94 and the church building was there 00:08:16.97\00:08:19.84 and everybody was standing outside 00:08:19.87\00:08:22.14 singing a welcome greeting to us 00:08:22.17\00:08:24.52 and it just warms your heart to see them. 00:08:24.55\00:08:27.10 The welcome was so warm and the people there musically 00:08:27.13\00:08:30.31 just tremendous had a choir there 00:08:30.34\00:08:32.73 that I said you know, boy, 00:08:32.76\00:08:34.36 I wish we can get you out some place and sing to-- 00:08:34.39\00:08:38.00 to the wider Adventist church audience in some place. 00:08:38.03\00:08:40.75 Now, please tell me you brought some video 00:08:40.78\00:08:42.18 of this place. Yeah. 00:08:42.21\00:08:43.46 Why don't we show some of this right now. 00:08:43.49\00:08:46.74 And you can see this mountain village there 00:08:46.77\00:08:49.93 and some of the people were walking up there. 00:08:49.96\00:08:53.24 Now, one of the things 00:08:53.27\00:08:54.86 that I found out about this village is that 00:08:54.89\00:08:58.96 somebody from this village in 1940 00:08:58.99\00:09:02.58 was attending the Adventist training school 00:09:02.61\00:09:04.80 set up by the Korean Adventist in China. 00:09:04.83\00:09:08.85 And so this person had been studying there 00:09:08.88\00:09:11.55 when things in China changed 00:09:11.58\00:09:13.36 and they shut down the school, 00:09:13.39\00:09:15.33 but they have retained 00:09:15.36\00:09:17.09 their beliefs over all those years. 00:09:17.12\00:09:20.39 And about ten years ago 00:09:20.42\00:09:23.38 an Adventist church planter stumbled across this village 00:09:23.41\00:09:27.71 and went up there and started talking to them 00:09:27.74\00:09:30.21 and found out that there are Sabbath keepers in this village. 00:09:30.24\00:09:33.45 And so they provided funding for them 00:09:33.48\00:09:37.25 and these people built this church 00:09:37.28\00:09:39.51 and it's a really beautiful church building 00:09:39.54\00:09:41.44 but what really impressed me was 00:09:41.47\00:09:43.57 they carried all those building materials 00:09:43.60\00:09:45.55 up that mountain on their back 00:09:45.58\00:09:46.98 in these little baskets to build that church. 00:09:47.01\00:09:50.30 Commitment. Commitment. 00:09:50.33\00:09:52.29 So how many were worshipping there? 00:09:52.32\00:09:54.64 There were about 30-35 people worshiping there 00:09:54.67\00:09:58.82 and then you will see some other footage here coming up. 00:09:58.85\00:10:02.77 But there was another church, yeah. 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.61 There was another church that we visited 00:10:05.64\00:10:07.73 and we met a 79 year old woman 00:10:07.76\00:10:12.30 who was there and a church planter 00:10:12.33\00:10:14.48 had come there about 12 years ago 00:10:14.51\00:10:17.39 and had started this church 00:10:17.42\00:10:18.79 and this lady was one of her first converts 00:10:18.82\00:10:22.20 and she met her because she was looking 00:10:22.23\00:10:24.18 for a place to stay. 00:10:24.21\00:10:25.92 And this lady had a room to rent. 00:10:25.95\00:10:28.01 And as they began talking and studying this lady, 00:10:28.04\00:10:31.20 you know was convinced that Jesus Christ was a savior, 00:10:31.23\00:10:35.80 so she became a Christian 00:10:35.83\00:10:37.13 and she let them build a small church in there 00:10:37.16\00:10:39.63 in her little backyard there 00:10:39.66\00:10:42.49 and you know, it wasn't long after that, 00:10:42.52\00:10:46.33 that one day this church planter went out on to the street 00:10:46.36\00:10:49.33 and she saw somebody lying there in a pool of blood 00:10:49.36\00:10:51.73 and she went over and it was this little old lady 00:10:51.76\00:10:53.64 who had been struck by some passing vehicle 00:10:53.67\00:10:57.03 and they were really worried about her 00:10:57.06\00:10:58.25 and they said you know, what are we going to do 00:10:58.28\00:11:00.85 they rushed her to the hospital 00:11:00.88\00:11:02.15 and long story short she was okay, 00:11:02.18\00:11:03.79 but when she came out she realized 00:11:03.82\00:11:06.29 that she still owned the land that church was on 00:11:06.32\00:11:08.40 and said if anything happens to me 00:11:08.43\00:11:10.25 they are gonna lose the church. 00:11:10.28\00:11:11.50 So she donated the land to them. 00:11:11.53\00:11:15.50 In China we see tremendous commitment 00:11:15.53\00:11:17.74 from people under very adverse circumstances over the years. 00:11:17.77\00:11:21.04 Over the years and things are changing in China a lot. 00:11:21.07\00:11:24.28 And so there is tremendous opportunity there. 00:11:24.31\00:11:26.95 Thanks for sharing for this today, Rick. 00:11:26.98\00:11:28.56 I appreciate it. Okay. 00:11:28.59\00:11:30.93 China, we see tremendous growth. 00:11:30.96\00:11:33.24 We have some 400,000 Seventh-day Adventist believers. 00:11:33.27\00:11:36.95 But still a tremendous challenge throughout that country, 00:11:36.98\00:11:40.75 huge cities with so many people 00:11:40.78\00:11:43.03 many of whom have never heard the name of Jesus. 00:11:43.06\00:11:45.93 Please pray for the people of China. 00:11:45.96\00:11:47.85 It's my pleasure to have as guest today 00:12:26.56\00:12:29.54 Kyle and Cindy Tumberg who are going as missionaries 00:12:29.57\00:12:33.34 for Adventist Frontier Missions to the country of Thailand. 00:12:33.37\00:12:37.13 Now, when do you leave for Thailand? 00:12:37.16\00:12:40.10 We are hoping to leave by the end of October 00:12:40.13\00:12:42.53 or beginning of November. 00:12:42.56\00:12:43.61 We are waiting for our visa right now. 00:12:43.64\00:12:45.11 Okay, so a couple of months. 00:12:45.14\00:12:47.25 Now, I'm just fascinated 00:12:47.28\00:12:49.80 why a young couple living in North America 00:12:49.83\00:12:53.45 would have a vision for going to the other side 00:12:53.48\00:12:56.15 of the world as missionaries. 00:12:56.18\00:12:58.62 How did this all start? 00:12:58.65\00:13:00.72 I was-- for me I was just really touched by 00:13:00.75\00:13:04.34 when I heard the numbers of how many people there were 00:13:04.37\00:13:07.05 that still haven't heard about Christ 00:13:07.08\00:13:09.29 and it just didn't seem fair to me. 00:13:09.32\00:13:11.62 And I just had a desire to share with others 00:13:11.65\00:13:14.87 that haven't had a chance yet. 00:13:14.90\00:13:17.03 Because we know that North America 00:13:17.06\00:13:18.48 is a huge mission field 00:13:18.51\00:13:20.25 but when you look at the numbers 00:13:20.28\00:13:22.23 in the country of Thailand, 00:13:22.26\00:13:23.42 who have never even heard the name of Jesus 00:13:23.45\00:13:26.20 and you are talking challenge. 00:13:26.23\00:13:27.45 That's true. What about you Kyle? 00:13:27.48\00:13:29.79 You know, it was a conviction 00:13:29.82\00:13:31.29 that developed over several years. 00:13:31.32\00:13:33.65 I have done a lot of Bible work here in North America 00:13:33.68\00:13:36.42 and had been involved in a church plant in Arkansas. 00:13:36.45\00:13:39.68 And I have a real passion to share my faith 00:13:39.71\00:13:42.37 and as I was praying about the future 00:13:42.40\00:13:44.08 what God would have us do long term. 00:13:44.11\00:13:46.62 I thought of several different possibilities, 00:13:46.65\00:13:48.58 pastoral work or evangelistic work 00:13:48.61\00:13:50.55 or teaching or mission work 00:13:50.58\00:13:53.25 and I really only had peace 00:13:53.28\00:13:56.14 about the thought of doing overseas mission work. 00:13:56.17\00:13:59.03 Mainly because of the-- of the great need 00:13:59.06\00:14:01.69 but also we really felt like at this time in our lives 00:14:01.72\00:14:04.74 we could do something like devote 00:14:04.77\00:14:06.89 several years of our life to a pioneer project, 00:14:06.92\00:14:10.20 but the other we get the harder that would be 00:14:10.23\00:14:12.66 and so we thought that the claims 00:14:12.69\00:14:14.55 that God had in our life at this time 00:14:14.58\00:14:17.17 are different than what they would be, 00:14:17.20\00:14:19.01 you know, in five or ten years. 00:14:19.04\00:14:21.12 So that really weighed into our decision. 00:14:21.15\00:14:23.89 Yeah, now, tell me a little bit about 00:14:23.92\00:14:25.22 your church planting experience. 00:14:25.25\00:14:26.77 Now, I understand this was supported by global mission 00:14:26.80\00:14:30.83 and you are planting in what area? 00:14:30.86\00:14:35.69 We were involved in a church plant project 00:14:35.72\00:14:38.04 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. 00:14:38.07\00:14:40.12 Arkadelphia is about 60 miles west of Little Rock 00:14:40.15\00:14:45.41 and we got involved in the project around 2006-2007. 00:14:45.44\00:14:51.67 Arkadelphia is a city of about 10,000 people 00:14:51.70\00:14:54.17 with no Seventh-day Adventist church 00:14:54.20\00:14:56.39 and we did several things. 00:14:56.42\00:14:58.80 We did door to door Bible studies. 00:14:58.83\00:15:00.83 We did group Bible studies, evangelistic seminars 00:15:00.86\00:15:03.97 and just bit by bit we saw the Lord growing the church 00:15:04.00\00:15:07.54 and this past April 00:15:07.57\00:15:09.18 it was officially organized in the Arkansas-Louisiana 00:15:09.21\00:15:12.23 Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:15:12.26\00:15:13.46 Wonderful, fantastic. 00:15:13.49\00:15:15.62 Now, Cindy, it's a long way from Arkansas to Thailand. 00:15:15.65\00:15:18.88 What do you know about the area 00:15:18.91\00:15:20.75 where you are going? Like what specifically? 00:15:20.78\00:15:23.63 Yeah, like what do you know about the culture, the people, 00:15:23.66\00:15:26.29 I mean what are your expectations of the location 00:15:26.32\00:15:29.63 where you are moving too. 00:15:29.66\00:15:31.07 We are going to be moving to a city 00:15:31.10\00:15:33.86 I believe it has two universities there 00:15:33.89\00:15:36.34 and Thailand is about 96% Buddhists 00:15:36.37\00:15:40.66 so that's gonna be-- 00:15:40.69\00:15:41.78 our target is to work for the Buddhists 00:15:41.81\00:15:44.47 and as far as expectations I don't really have a lot, 00:15:44.50\00:15:48.26 I'm not sure exactly what it's gonna be like. 00:15:48.29\00:15:51.07 So it will be a big learning curve for me for sure. 00:15:51.10\00:15:54.14 I'm sure, yeah. 00:15:54.17\00:15:55.61 Now, you have gone through training 00:15:55.64\00:15:57.84 with Adventist Frontier Missions. 00:15:57.87\00:15:59.63 Now, I understand that it's a fairly rigorous training 00:15:59.66\00:16:03.09 in preparation for mission service. 00:16:03.12\00:16:04.56 What sort of things did you learn? 00:16:04.59\00:16:07.80 You know training was a great experience, 00:16:07.83\00:16:10.23 we spent three months, 00:16:10.26\00:16:11.54 you know, going to class everyday 00:16:11.57\00:16:13.69 and we talked a lot about 00:16:13.72\00:16:15.05 understanding different cultures, 00:16:15.08\00:16:16.72 understanding different world views 00:16:16.75\00:16:18.60 and how people think. 00:16:18.63\00:16:20.14 And how to communicate the gospel in ways that, 00:16:20.17\00:16:24.25 that people in different cultures will understand. 00:16:24.28\00:16:28.00 That was heavily emphasized. 00:16:28.03\00:16:29.55 We also talked a lot about team building 00:16:29.58\00:16:31.82 and the importance of having healthy teams, 00:16:31.85\00:16:34.29 because when you are in the mission field, 00:16:34.32\00:16:36.11 you have to have strong team dynamics to succeed. 00:16:36.14\00:16:39.05 And we talked about the importance of the family 00:16:39.08\00:16:43.26 and really making that a priority 00:16:43.29\00:16:44.99 and having a strong healthy family 00:16:45.02\00:16:47.79 and just several you know, several 00:16:47.82\00:16:49.59 just very practical classes 00:16:49.62\00:16:51.36 in relation to cross cultural work 00:16:51.39\00:16:53.53 and mission work. 00:16:53.56\00:16:54.79 So it trains you in the principles 00:16:54.82\00:16:57.50 of mission service. 00:16:57.53\00:16:59.10 So you are not going to Thailand 00:16:59.13\00:17:01.30 with the list of this is what we are going to do, do, do. 00:17:01.33\00:17:03.93 You actually are going to partially discover that 00:17:03.96\00:17:05.64 when you arrive. Exactly. 00:17:05.67\00:17:07.66 So when you arrive you don't 00:17:07.69\00:17:09.19 immediately start mission programs, 00:17:09.22\00:17:14.46 you actually do a bit of research. 00:17:14.49\00:17:15.76 Tell me about that part of the program? 00:17:15.79\00:17:18.51 When we first get there, 00:17:18.54\00:17:19.61 we'll engage in language learning first 00:17:19.64\00:17:22.45 to really try to learn the Thai language 00:17:22.48\00:17:25.17 so that we can communicate them 00:17:25.20\00:17:26.50 in their heart language. 00:17:26.53\00:17:28.09 And then from there 00:17:28.12\00:17:29.33 we will actually study their culture some 00:17:29.36\00:17:31.55 and try to understand how they think, 00:17:31.58\00:17:34.32 how they process things 00:17:34.35\00:17:36.15 so that the gospel we are not bringing to them 00:17:36.18\00:17:39.20 is the gospel that you might say, 00:17:39.23\00:17:44.30 we are used to or doesn't speak to questions 00:17:44.33\00:17:47.52 we may have but it speaks to their needs 00:17:47.55\00:17:49.61 and their questions 00:17:49.64\00:17:51.03 and it's going to really be communicating Christ 00:17:51.06\00:17:53.15 in a way they can understand. 00:17:53.18\00:17:55.12 And how long does that process take? 00:17:55.15\00:17:56.66 I mean, I know it's gonna be part of your whole service. 00:17:56.69\00:18:00.02 But that initial research, how long does that take? 00:18:00.05\00:18:03.50 You know, it varies from project to project, 00:18:03.53\00:18:06.37 but typically most if a missionary spend 00:18:06.40\00:18:10.48 between one and half to two years 00:18:10.51\00:18:12.90 I think studying the culture 00:18:12.93\00:18:14.79 and really getting a handle on the language 00:18:14.82\00:18:17.41 and the different dynamics in the culture. 00:18:17.44\00:18:20.15 Now for people who want to learn more about AFM, 00:18:20.18\00:18:24.12 they can go to the website 00:18:24.15\00:18:25.27 which I guess is AFM.org, am I correct? 00:18:25.30\00:18:27.62 AFMonline.org. Online.org, okay, tremendous. 00:18:27.65\00:18:32.01 I was quite taken Cindy when you said that 00:18:32.04\00:18:35.31 you just didn't seem to think it was fair that 00:18:35.34\00:18:37.70 so many people haven't heard about Jesus. 00:18:37.73\00:18:39.52 When did you first learn about Jesus? 00:18:39.55\00:18:41.79 I grew up in the Adventist church 00:18:41.82\00:18:44.65 so grew up hearing about Jesus 00:18:44.68\00:18:46.74 but it's probably been in the last 00:18:46.77\00:18:48.49 six, seven years that 00:18:48.52\00:18:51.30 I have really come to see things differently 00:18:51.33\00:18:54.09 and had more of a personal walk with Him. 00:18:54.12\00:18:56.87 I mean just realized it, 00:18:56.90\00:18:58.12 depends more on Christ righteousness 00:18:58.15\00:19:01.20 and not my own works in. Yes, yes. 00:19:01.23\00:19:02.89 What I do or don't do. Yeah. 00:19:02.92\00:19:05.35 And when did you both realize that 00:19:05.38\00:19:06.68 you had a shared passion for mission. 00:19:06.71\00:19:09.67 You know, it's quite a story. 00:19:09.70\00:19:12.12 We began dating around 2007 00:19:12.15\00:19:15.76 and we went to an ASI convention 00:19:15.79\00:19:18.41 in Louisville, Kentucky. 00:19:18.44\00:19:19.85 And at that time we were talking about the future 00:19:19.88\00:19:21.87 and still testing the waters in the courtships 00:19:21.90\00:19:24.13 so to speak but unbeknownst to me, 00:19:24.16\00:19:26.66 Cindy had prayed before we went to the ASI Convention 00:19:26.69\00:19:29.60 that the Lord would use the convention to give us 00:19:29.63\00:19:32.45 some clarity about our future 00:19:32.48\00:19:34.50 and she didn't pull it with that prayer. 00:19:34.53\00:19:36.81 But we went to the convention 00:19:36.84\00:19:37.96 and one night we are walking around the exhibit halls 00:19:37.99\00:19:40.73 and I had picked up some material 00:19:40.76\00:19:42.69 from one of the exhibits 00:19:42.72\00:19:43.75 and I wasn't really paying attention 00:19:43.78\00:19:44.81 to where I was walking 00:19:44.84\00:19:46.19 and I ended up walking right up to the AFM booth. 00:19:46.22\00:19:49.70 And I began talking to the recruiter there, 00:19:49.73\00:19:51.86 I would actually see him speak about 00:19:51.89\00:19:53.34 a year and half prior to that 00:19:53.37\00:19:55.38 and as I was talking with him, 00:19:55.41\00:19:58.18 I had some questions about mission work 00:19:58.21\00:20:00.24 and about the un-reached. 00:20:00.27\00:20:02.87 And we left that ASI Convention really 00:20:02.90\00:20:05.74 you know, thinking that some day 00:20:05.77\00:20:07.46 we may possibly be missionaries. 00:20:07.49\00:20:10.31 So it really, it really began there I would say. 00:20:10.34\00:20:13.30 Wonderful, well, Cindy and Kyle, 00:20:13.33\00:20:15.37 wishing you God's richest blessings in this new endeavor. 00:20:15.40\00:20:19.28 And to our viewers at home, 00:20:19.31\00:20:21.10 please remember Kyle and Cindy 00:20:21.13\00:20:22.98 and so many other missionaries in your prayers. 00:20:23.01\00:20:26.55 God may even have a purpose for you in mission. 00:20:26.58\00:20:29.97 Please prayerfully consider that 00:20:30.00\00:20:32.26 and may God richly bless this young couple 00:20:32.29\00:20:34.83 as they go to serve Him. Thank you. 00:20:34.86\00:20:36.93 Korea is home to immigrants from all over Asia. 00:20:41.20\00:20:45.51 They come to find work, 00:20:45.54\00:20:47.06 but sometimes struggle to find a place to call home. 00:20:47.09\00:20:50.60 In the city of Ansan, 00:20:50.63\00:20:52.23 a multicultural center opened to help immigrants in Korea. 00:20:52.26\00:20:55.56 Andrew Kahn is just one example 00:21:03.03\00:21:04.90 of how the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:21:04.93\00:21:07.12 is reaching out to people 00:21:07.15\00:21:08.48 in the community who are in need. 00:21:08.51\00:21:11.05 This center providing the people 00:21:11.08\00:21:13.05 for free food 00:21:13.08\00:21:16.86 and free lodging for some times 00:21:16.89\00:21:22.76 one month or two months 00:21:22.79\00:21:25.02 and before they get a new job. 00:21:25.05\00:21:27.60 Andrew, an immigrant himself, 00:21:27.63\00:21:29.93 fled Myanmar seven years ago 00:21:29.96\00:21:31.85 because of political unrest. 00:21:31.88\00:21:34.30 He knows the challenges 00:21:34.33\00:21:35.55 of moving to a foreign country firsthand. 00:21:35.58\00:21:38.44 The center he works at 00:21:38.47\00:21:39.58 not only meets the people's physical needs 00:21:39.61\00:21:41.63 by providing food and shelter, 00:21:41.66\00:21:43.70 but focuses on meeting their spiritual needs as well. 00:21:43.73\00:21:48.14 There is really a big work for this, 00:21:48.17\00:21:51.02 so we put it up, 00:21:51.05\00:21:54.41 envision to fellowship with them, 00:21:54.44\00:21:59.97 to just invite them to church, you know. 00:22:00.00\00:22:03.42 To let them know that we are here. 00:22:03.45\00:22:05.11 We care for them. 00:22:05.14\00:22:07.33 So if they don't know about God, 00:22:07.36\00:22:12.39 we have to teach them. 00:22:12.42\00:22:16.31 We should believe God. 00:22:16.34\00:22:18.02 There is a creator and there is a savior Jesus, 00:22:18.05\00:22:23.69 and there is a Holy Spirit. 00:22:23.72\00:22:26.64 Workers at the center give Bible studies 00:22:26.67\00:22:28.75 to residents who are interested, 00:22:28.78\00:22:31.01 hoping to share the truth of God's word 00:22:31.04\00:22:33.37 and guide them along in their faith. 00:22:33.40\00:22:35.76 Evidence of their efforts can be 00:22:35.79\00:22:37.21 seen in the lives of various residents. 00:22:37.24\00:22:40.21 When she came to this center 00:22:40.24\00:22:43.46 I introduced her with the pastors 00:22:43.49\00:22:46.72 and I asked her if she wants to study the Bible. 00:22:46.75\00:22:52.90 And then she said yes, 00:22:52.93\00:22:54.68 and then I taught her the Bible, 00:22:54.71\00:22:59.01 especially the Adventist message. 00:22:59.04\00:23:01.95 And then after two weeks 00:23:01.98\00:23:05.48 she accepted and then she baptized. 00:23:05.51\00:23:11.80 Since the center opened in 2008, 00:23:11.83\00:23:14.26 about 40 people have been baptized. 00:23:14.29\00:23:17.52 Neil Valentino is an immigrant 00:23:17.55\00:23:19.35 who came to Korea to earn money 00:23:19.38\00:23:20.88 to send to his family back to the Philippines. 00:23:20.91\00:23:23.88 After working for a few years, he developed a skin rash 00:23:23.91\00:23:26.79 from the harsh chemicals at work. 00:23:26.82\00:23:29.04 Then Neil unexpectedly was fired from his job. 00:23:29.07\00:23:32.79 I was very depressed, 00:23:32.82\00:23:35.11 I was so anxious at the time, 00:23:35.14\00:23:37.96 of course, I'm so, you know, 00:23:37.99\00:23:41.75 disappointment was with me 00:23:41.78\00:23:43.81 all of those you know, that I'm almost dying at the time. 00:23:43.84\00:23:48.68 Unsure of what to do, 00:23:48.71\00:23:50.46 Neil wandered into a small Filipino store 00:23:50.49\00:23:52.95 where he met a worker from the outreach center. 00:23:52.98\00:23:55.71 When I saw this guy I thought he was also like me 00:23:55.74\00:24:01.80 going there just to visit and to buy something. 00:24:01.83\00:24:06.24 Then when he said that he was a missionary 00:24:06.27\00:24:12.42 then I found out that I am different from him. 00:24:12.45\00:24:17.04 The man invited Neil to visit the center 00:24:17.07\00:24:19.20 where he was given a place to stay. 00:24:19.23\00:24:21.70 At the center, he also learned to depend entirely on God. 00:24:21.73\00:24:27.04 Although I am a sinner and I have repented my sins, 00:24:27.07\00:24:30.46 my sins to Him through only accepting Him 00:24:30.49\00:24:35.76 as my Lord and Savior, 00:24:35.79\00:24:37.18 then I have to be baptized through the water. 00:24:37.21\00:24:39.59 In addition to the migrant center, 00:24:45.08\00:24:46.80 the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Korea 00:24:46.83\00:24:48.65 is reaching out to people in the community 00:24:48.68\00:24:51.04 through this vegetarian restaurant. 00:24:51.07\00:24:53.66 People come here to enjoy a meal 00:24:53.69\00:24:55.36 and they have an opportunity 00:24:55.39\00:24:56.64 to connect with Adventist Church members. 00:24:56.67\00:25:00.14 I love helping people. I guess it's my passion. 00:25:00.17\00:25:04.82 Since I joined the 1,000 missionary movement in 1993 00:25:04.85\00:25:10.61 until now I am still in the missionary work. 00:25:10.64\00:25:14.30 These forms of evangelism are important 00:25:14.33\00:25:16.71 to the church effort in Korea. 00:25:16.74\00:25:19.73 The migrant center in Ansan 00:25:19.76\00:25:21.34 is just one example of how Adventists 00:25:21.37\00:25:23.15 are touching lives in their community. 00:25:23.18\00:25:25.68 With the large number of immigrants in Korea 00:25:25.71\00:25:27.76 there is a growing need for another center. 00:25:27.79\00:25:31.12 We're adding another multicultural center 00:25:31.15\00:25:35.25 again in Seoul 00:25:35.28\00:25:36.96 and it will be beneficial to those foreigners 00:25:36.99\00:25:42.23 living in Seoul right by getting this assistance. 00:25:42.26\00:25:45.79 We hope that you help us to fulfill our dream 00:25:48.65\00:25:53.12 and through your financial support, 00:25:53.15\00:25:55.93 we can be a witness to all the people around us here 00:25:58.98\00:26:03.24 and we can tell to them that Jesus loves them. 00:26:03.27\00:26:07.74 A portion of this quarter's 13th Sabbath offering 00:26:07.77\00:26:10.43 goes towards building a new center in Seoul. 00:26:10.46\00:26:13.53 Thank you for doing your part 00:26:13.56\00:26:15.88 to build this new migrant center and please continue to pray 00:26:15.91\00:26:20.28 for those searching for a place to call home. 00:26:20.31\00:26:23.52 Thank you for your support of the mission 00:26:23.55\00:26:26.34 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:26:26.37\00:26:28.16 If you enjoy seeing the people in places around the world 00:27:09.57\00:27:13.14 where frontline mission is happening, 00:27:13.17\00:27:15.48 you love the new 2013 Adventist Mission Calendar. 00:27:15.51\00:27:20.41 This colorful calendar will keep images of mission 00:27:20.44\00:27:23.09 in front of you every day. 00:27:23.12\00:27:25.64 So if you live in North America, 00:27:25.67\00:27:27.20 simply call our toll free number 00:27:27.23\00:27:29.26 at 1800-648-5824 00:27:29.29\00:27:33.60 or visit our website 00:27:33.63\00:27:35.23 and ask for the Adventist Mission Calendar 00:27:35.26\00:27:38.04 or offer 305. 00:27:38.07\00:27:40.77 Don't forget to clearly state your name and address 00:27:40.80\00:27:44.56 and be sure to mention the Calendar or offer 305. 00:27:44.59\00:27:49.81 Well, I hope you have enjoyed today's program 00:27:49.84\00:27:51.96 as we are focused on snapshots of mission around the world. 00:27:51.99\00:27:56.28 Thank you for your continuing prayers 00:27:56.31\00:27:58.48 and financial support for global mission. 00:27:58.51\00:28:01.69 And I hope you can join me next time 00:28:01.72\00:28:03.82 right here on "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:28:03.85\00:28:06.41
