Just the single encounter with another human being 00:00:01.06\00:00:03.74 can make all the difference in someone's life. 00:00:03.77\00:00:07.10 What people have impacted your life? 00:00:07.13\00:00:09.99 Let's find out how one man's life 00:00:10.02\00:00:11.72 was completely changed by an encounter 00:00:11.75\00:00:14.26 with an Adventist missionary many years ago. 00:00:14.29\00:00:16.93 That's coming up next on "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:16.96\00:00:20.44 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:24.04\00:00:26.53 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:26.56\00:00:29.58 He gave us a mission. 00:00:29.61\00:00:32.32 Jesus said, go. 00:00:32.35\00:00:34.70 Go unto all the world, 00:00:34.73\00:00:37.11 telling them of His love. 00:00:37.14\00:00:39.64 This is our mission. This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:39.67\00:00:43.61 Hello and welcome to "Global Mission Snapshots." 00:00:49.10\00:00:51.61 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:51.64\00:00:53.14 Imagine packing your bags 00:00:53.17\00:00:54.65 and moving half way around the world 00:00:54.68\00:00:57.61 leaving your friends and family right behind. 00:00:57.64\00:01:00.43 Now imagine moving to a country 00:01:00.46\00:01:01.90 where the culture, customs, foods, 00:01:01.93\00:01:04.88 languages are all vastly different 00:01:04.91\00:01:07.39 from what you are used to. 00:01:07.42\00:01:09.24 Now depending on your personality 00:01:09.27\00:01:10.74 that could either sound scary or exciting. 00:01:10.77\00:01:13.83 But every year hundreds of Adventist missionaries 00:01:13.86\00:01:16.63 and volunteers answer God's call to serve us 00:01:16.66\00:01:19.59 and they do exactly that. 00:01:19.62\00:01:21.77 They aren't all from North America 00:01:21.80\00:01:23.35 or Europe or Australia, 00:01:23.38\00:01:25.14 they come from all over the world 00:01:25.17\00:01:27.72 but they all have one thing in common, 00:01:27.75\00:01:30.67 they're answering God's call to serve us. 00:01:30.70\00:01:33.44 On today's program we will meet 00:01:33.47\00:01:35.09 two missionary doctors serving in Nepal, 00:01:35.12\00:01:37.87 a land locked country sandwiched between India and China. 00:01:37.90\00:01:41.81 And we'll talk to G. T. Ng, the executive secretary 00:01:41.84\00:01:45.62 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:45.65\00:01:48.21 A long time advocate of mission 00:01:48.24\00:01:50.06 Dr. Ng served in Cambodia, Malaysia, 00:01:50.09\00:01:53.41 the Philippines and his native Singapore. 00:01:53.44\00:01:56.41 But first up, let's meet a teacher in India 00:01:56.44\00:01:59.78 whose life was completely changed 00:01:59.81\00:02:02.23 by an Adventist missionary and an Adventist school. 00:02:02.26\00:02:07.46 In moments like these I sing out a song 00:02:07.49\00:02:13.23 I sing out a love song to You 00:02:13.26\00:02:18.20 Today is a normal day 00:02:18.23\00:02:19.62 like any other at this Adventist school. 00:02:19.65\00:02:22.52 Parents drop off their children and students 00:02:22.55\00:02:24.79 gather in the courtyard for morning worship. 00:02:24.82\00:02:28.73 This is the Busy Bee Adventist School in Goa, India. 00:02:28.76\00:02:34.19 While most of Indian was under British rule, 00:02:34.22\00:02:36.64 Goa was one of the few areas colonized by the Portuguese. 00:02:36.67\00:02:40.63 Goa gained independence from Portugal in 1961 00:02:40.66\00:02:44.17 and this heavily catholic area 00:02:44.20\00:02:45.83 became India's 25th state in 1987. 00:02:45.86\00:02:50.59 But that seems like ancient history 00:02:50.62\00:02:52.33 to the young students in the school today, 00:02:52.36\00:02:54.47 as they start another day of classes. 00:02:54.50\00:02:56.42 Just as he does on any other day, 00:03:00.52\00:03:02.80 Reuben Doddamani goes about his business 00:03:02.83\00:03:05.24 as the first assistant principal of the school. 00:03:05.27\00:03:09.12 Like the students he teaches, 00:03:09.15\00:03:11.00 Reuben was once a Student 00:03:11.03\00:03:12.28 at a Seventh-day Adventist school. 00:03:12.31\00:03:15.08 Reuben was a young boy 00:03:15.11\00:03:16.37 when his father learned about Seventh-day Adventists. 00:03:16.40\00:03:19.92 My father heard the messages 00:03:19.95\00:03:25.70 that were broadcasted on the radio-- 00:03:25.73\00:03:30.43 so he was able to listen 00:03:30.46\00:03:31.55 to these messages of Seventh-day Adventists 00:03:31.58\00:03:34.17 and he corresponded with them, 00:03:34.20\00:03:35.92 he was enrolled for the Voice of Prophecy. 00:03:35.95\00:03:38.36 Reuben's father invited an Adventist missionary 00:03:38.39\00:03:40.89 to come to the village to hold meetings. 00:03:40.92\00:03:43.57 When the missionary left, he took Reuben, 00:03:43.60\00:03:46.19 his brother and three other children 00:03:46.22\00:03:48.09 to the Adventist school in Bangalore. 00:03:48.12\00:03:51.18 Leaving home at such a young age was hard on Reuben. 00:03:51.21\00:03:55.10 I was missing my mother and my parents, father also 00:03:55.13\00:04:01.67 but my father would tell us 00:04:01.70\00:04:03.76 that you be near the gate I'll come back 00:04:03.79\00:04:05.48 with some chocolates and he would go away 00:04:05.51\00:04:08.46 and so we would be in the hostel. 00:04:08.49\00:04:11.16 Thinking back to that time 00:04:11.19\00:04:12.99 Reuben knows how hard it was for his father 00:04:13.02\00:04:14.82 to let him go and how he was misunderstood 00:04:14.85\00:04:17.48 by others in the village. 00:04:17.51\00:04:19.10 Other accused him for selling the children 00:04:19.13\00:04:22.18 but now they praise him 00:04:22.21\00:04:23.70 for the good work that he has done. 00:04:23.73\00:04:26.20 As Reuben grew so did his love for Jesus. 00:04:26.23\00:04:29.58 He was baptized when Pastor Gordon Jensen 00:04:29.61\00:04:32.57 another Adventist missionary came into his life. 00:04:32.60\00:04:35.97 This was the year 1980, 00:04:36.00\00:04:38.56 when Pastor Jensen came to Lowry Memorial College 00:04:38.59\00:04:41.37 where I was studying 00:04:41.40\00:04:43.00 and he conducted week of prayer 00:04:43.03\00:04:45.10 and I felt that God has-- the right time 00:04:45.13\00:04:48.66 He has called me to be part of His church 00:04:48.69\00:04:51.34 so I decided to take baptism. 00:04:51.37\00:04:54.34 After finishing high school, 00:04:54.37\00:04:56.23 Reuben longed to become a minister. 00:04:56.26\00:04:58.56 But he didn't have the money to go to seminary. 00:04:58.59\00:05:00.72 So he became a teacher. 00:05:00.75\00:05:03.56 Today, Reuben realizes that God had another plan for his life, 00:05:03.59\00:05:07.84 a plan that had him ministering to students. 00:05:07.87\00:05:11.32 I feel that God has chosen me for this ministry. 00:05:11.35\00:05:15.44 And so through this institution 00:05:15.47\00:05:17.31 I can be a witness for Him. 00:05:17.34\00:05:19.74 The children are our future citizen. 00:05:19.77\00:05:22.33 And it is, here we can teach them 00:05:22.36\00:05:25.17 about the love of Jesus. 00:05:25.20\00:05:27.28 Even outside of school, 00:05:27.31\00:05:28.80 Reuben still ministers to others. 00:05:28.83\00:05:31.21 He visits families, talking with them 00:05:31.24\00:05:33.48 and sharing his faith in practical ways. 00:05:33.51\00:05:37.04 One family lives on the beach 00:05:37.07\00:05:38.58 and fishes for a living 00:05:38.61\00:05:39.90 from their round basket boats. 00:05:39.93\00:05:41.80 We have some fishing communities 00:05:50.54\00:05:52.06 which come from other states, 00:05:52.09\00:05:54.51 Karnataka, during this off seasons 00:05:54.54\00:05:57.67 where they do fishing at the coastal areas. 00:05:57.70\00:06:00.54 And we do visit them 00:06:00.57\00:06:01.98 and have prayer with them and talk to them. 00:06:02.01\00:06:03.55 They are illiterates, they do no know 00:06:03.58\00:06:04.92 to read and write. 00:06:04.95\00:06:06.30 But we talk to them about the love of Jesus 00:06:06.33\00:06:09.04 and how He died for us 00:06:09.07\00:06:10.42 and how He is coming back again. 00:06:10.45\00:06:12.82 In his own way and in his own place 00:06:12.85\00:06:16.12 Reuben is doing his part 00:06:16.15\00:06:17.58 to tell the world about Jesus' love. 00:06:17.61\00:06:20.69 I've chosen the right path. 00:06:20.72\00:06:22.48 I'm so happy that during that early age 00:06:22.51\00:06:25.68 my parents were able to send me to the boarding school. 00:06:25.71\00:06:30.09 So I'm so thankful God has chosen me to be 00:06:30.12\00:06:33.18 in His vineyard to serve Him, 00:06:33.21\00:06:35.18 in the capacity of teacher in this school. 00:06:35.21\00:06:38.67 As he goes about his daily work, 00:06:38.70\00:06:40.95 Reuben is thankful 00:06:40.98\00:06:42.02 that Adventist missionaries came to India 00:06:42.05\00:06:44.44 and made a profound difference on his life. 00:06:44.47\00:06:47.29 Their work lives on through Reuben 00:06:47.32\00:06:49.41 and their work lives on in the lives of the students 00:06:49.44\00:06:51.98 he is teaching to love Jesus. 00:06:52.01\00:06:55.38 Thank you for your faithful prayers 00:06:55.41\00:06:57.40 and support of the mission offering. 00:06:57.43\00:06:59.61 To learn more about mission, 00:06:59.64\00:07:01.45 please visit AdventistMission.org. 00:07:01.48\00:07:06.42 I'm happy to welcome, Dr. G.T. Ng, 00:07:08.35\00:07:10.53 the executive secretary of the General Conference 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.14 to talk with us today. Welcome, Dr. Ng. 00:07:13.17\00:07:15.68 Thank you. 00:07:15.71\00:07:16.74 You know, as we look 00:07:16.77\00:07:17.80 at the mission challenge that faces 00:07:17.83\00:07:19.09 the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:07:19.12\00:07:20.69 we think of the 10/40 Window, 00:07:20.72\00:07:22.94 we think of the growing secular and postmodern populations, 00:07:22.97\00:07:27.86 but we also look at the big urban areas. 00:07:27.89\00:07:31.36 What sort of a challenge are the cities to us today. 00:07:31.39\00:07:37.03 Statistics have shown that more and more people 00:07:37.06\00:07:41.92 are migrating to urban centers in the world. 00:07:41.95\00:07:48.21 People from Africa migrating to Europe and America, 00:07:48.24\00:07:53.74 people from Asia are migrating to Australia. 00:07:53.77\00:07:58.04 But even within countries, 00:07:58.07\00:08:00.20 people having internal migrations. 00:08:00.23\00:08:02.45 You know, China, for example rural area 00:08:02.48\00:08:06.32 many peasants are moving to cities 00:08:06.35\00:08:08.48 because lives are better or perceived to be better. 00:08:08.51\00:08:12.06 They can find job, they have conveniences all there 00:08:12.09\00:08:15.38 and so internal migration is a very real part 00:08:15.41\00:08:19.12 of different countries around the world. 00:08:19.15\00:08:21.35 India is a same thing. 00:08:21.38\00:08:24.35 Brazil having the same experience as well. 00:08:24.38\00:08:28.85 As a church our previous missionary strategy 00:08:28.88\00:08:34.26 has been to work 00:08:34.29\00:08:35.79 among the villages and the islands. 00:08:35.82\00:08:39.41 For 50 years, for 60 years, for 100 years, 00:08:39.44\00:08:43.89 we have been concentrating on those areas which is fine. 00:08:43.92\00:08:49.58 Villagers and islanders they need to be won 00:08:49.61\00:08:53.14 to the kingdom of God, no question about it. 00:08:53.17\00:08:55.87 But in doing so we have been neglecting 00:08:55.90\00:09:00.22 people living in cities 00:09:00.25\00:09:03.79 and as we witness in the world situation today, 00:09:03.82\00:09:07.23 more than half of the world's population live in city 00:09:07.26\00:09:09.73 and what do we do as a church 00:09:09.76\00:09:12.32 which almost with that exception. 00:09:12.35\00:09:15.67 When we go to a certain country 00:09:15.70\00:09:17.44 you go to the capital city 00:09:17.47\00:09:18.79 for example, you find 00:09:18.83\00:09:20.25 very few Seventh-day Adventist Churches 00:09:20.28\00:09:22.85 with exception of Jakarta, for example, 00:09:22.88\00:09:25.79 which has 110 or 112 churches right now. 00:09:25.82\00:09:30.91 This is a rare exception. 00:09:30.94\00:09:33.58 Sao Paulo is another rare exception. 00:09:33.61\00:09:36.66 One of the highest concentration 00:09:36.69\00:09:38.67 of Seventh-day Adventist believers in any one single city 00:09:38.70\00:09:42.64 but aside from that 00:09:42.67\00:09:44.42 we have very weak presence in cities 00:09:44.45\00:09:47.29 and we have to do something about it. 00:09:47.32\00:09:49.72 Is that because Adventists just like to live in the country? 00:09:49.75\00:09:52.58 Why have we neglected the cities? 00:09:52.61\00:09:54.93 There are many reasons for that. 00:09:54.96\00:09:56.56 Number one, we tend to concentrate 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.08 our mission strategy in areas that has the least resistance. 00:09:59.11\00:10:03.21 That's easier. 00:10:03.24\00:10:04.90 Money can go a long way in villages, 00:10:04.93\00:10:07.99 you just pitch a tent 00:10:08.02\00:10:09.22 and people will come for evangelistic meeting 00:10:09.25\00:10:11.70 but not in cities. 00:10:11.73\00:10:13.97 It calls for different methodology 00:10:14.00\00:10:16.52 and is expensive and when money is tight, 00:10:16.55\00:10:20.10 you tend to spend 00:10:20.13\00:10:21.21 where money goes a longer way. 00:10:21.24\00:10:23.67 Right. 00:10:23.70\00:10:24.73 You know, so that's one reason. 00:10:24.76\00:10:27.19 Another reason is because of our publications in the past. 00:10:27.22\00:10:31.56 We used to publish from the white estate. 00:10:31.59\00:10:36.30 You know, the beauty of country living 00:10:36.33\00:10:39.34 and which is fine. 00:10:39.37\00:10:42.13 You know, there's no question 00:10:42.16\00:10:44.80 that city has many evils. 00:10:44.83\00:10:49.33 Ellen White has a lot to say about 00:10:49.36\00:10:52.43 city being areas where young people 00:10:52.46\00:10:57.74 should not find themselves if they can help it, you know. 00:10:57.77\00:11:01.74 Even evangelist people who work in cities 00:11:01.77\00:11:04.11 they have to be specially chosen, 00:11:04.14\00:11:06.35 because they may be subject to temptation in cities. 00:11:06.38\00:11:09.79 Cities are just like evil and we cannot deny that. 00:11:09.82\00:11:14.12 But-- and so because of all this different philosophies 00:11:14.15\00:11:19.30 we tend to neglect cities. 00:11:19.33\00:11:21.80 So, as we look at the challenge 00:11:21.83\00:11:23.63 and we feel the need to respond. 00:11:23.66\00:11:26.78 What methodology, what approach 00:11:26.81\00:11:28.79 should we be considering 00:11:28.82\00:11:30.14 when we talk about ministry in cities. 00:11:30.17\00:11:32.87 We have thought about this question many, many times. 00:11:32.90\00:11:36.54 I used to teach a course in urban mission. 00:11:36.57\00:11:40.12 I now wrestle, I wrestle with the best models 00:11:40.15\00:11:46.02 that we can find. 00:11:46.05\00:11:47.08 So I sculpted the world, I read all that I could read 00:11:47.11\00:11:51.35 and of course we do have successes 00:11:51.38\00:11:53.85 in different corners of the world. 00:11:53.88\00:11:55.55 You know, where they have been very good 00:11:55.58\00:11:59.20 in reaching people living in cities. 00:11:59.23\00:12:02.52 Australia is one, Brazil is another one, 00:12:02.55\00:12:07.38 but there are very few models for us to follow. 00:12:07.41\00:12:12.30 And so I've come to the conclusion 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.48 that the most defective methodology 00:12:14.51\00:12:19.98 of reaching people in city 00:12:20.01\00:12:21.96 is total mobilization of our membership. 00:12:21.99\00:12:25.54 I think that's a key to success. 00:12:25.57\00:12:28.17 Many times we look for the silver bullet. 00:12:28.20\00:12:30.66 We say, what is that methodology 00:12:30.69\00:12:36.03 that I can adopt that will win people in the city? 00:12:36.06\00:12:38.75 It's just not there. 00:12:38.78\00:12:40.71 The silver bullet is just not there. 00:12:40.74\00:12:42.88 We have to mobilize our membership 00:12:42.91\00:12:46.04 making sure that everyone 00:12:46.07\00:12:48.79 is a working member of the church. 00:12:48.82\00:12:50.71 We ask the question, where is the church on Sabbath? 00:12:50.74\00:12:53.79 The church is in the sanctuary on Sabbath. 00:12:53.82\00:12:57.53 Where is the church on Monday? Where is it? 00:12:57.56\00:13:01.90 Members say, I don't know. 00:13:01.93\00:13:04.43 But little have they realized that they are the church. 00:13:04.46\00:13:07.71 They represent the church in the workplace 00:13:07.74\00:13:10.48 during the week days. 00:13:10.51\00:13:11.69 So what have we done to train them? 00:13:11.72\00:13:13.77 And I think this is one key components 00:13:13.80\00:13:16.03 without that link to the world 00:13:16.06\00:13:19.46 we are getting nowhere. 00:13:19.49\00:13:20.78 So to me, members are absolutely critical 00:13:20.81\00:13:25.26 in the success of urban mission. 00:13:25.29\00:13:26.89 They have to bring friends and relatives 00:13:26.92\00:13:30.32 and their loved ones and their colleagues 00:13:30.35\00:13:33.37 to the church because we as ministers, 00:13:33.40\00:13:37.45 we cannot depend on public evangelism to do the trick. 00:13:37.48\00:13:42.14 It's just not going to work. 00:13:42.17\00:13:44.86 And we're reminded of Ellen White 00:13:44.89\00:13:46.66 talking about Christ messages of the holistic method, 00:13:46.69\00:13:50.03 long term on the ground commitment. 00:13:50.06\00:13:52.75 So it is a long term process. 00:13:52.78\00:13:56.00 It is not a drive by night kind of venture. 00:13:56.03\00:14:02.12 So the traditional public evangelism is not gonna work. 00:14:02.15\00:14:05.96 I just came back from Zambia two weeks ago and thank God 00:14:05.99\00:14:10.16 we have 800,000 members in Zambia. 00:14:10.19\00:14:13.35 And evangelistic method is still working there. 00:14:13.38\00:14:18.21 You pitch a tent, people will come 00:14:18.24\00:14:20.38 and you can baptize people by the hundreds, 00:14:20.41\00:14:22.53 is still working there. 00:14:22.56\00:14:23.76 But that's not true elsewhere around the world. 00:14:23.79\00:14:27.11 So we need to have many different approaches 00:14:27.14\00:14:29.51 and we need church members involved. 00:14:29.54\00:14:32.16 Certainly, certainly. Yeah. 00:14:32.19\00:14:33.32 Dr. Ng, thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:14:33.35\00:14:34.93 It's my pleasure. 00:14:34.96\00:14:35.99 My guests are Aaron and Sally Sartin 00:15:14.17\00:15:16.95 who are missionaries to the country of Nepal 00:15:16.98\00:15:19.88 and with them we have a young man 00:15:19.91\00:15:21.80 here by the name of Caleb. 00:15:21.83\00:15:23.81 And who is this precious little bundle in your arms, Sally? 00:15:23.84\00:15:27.12 This is Hannah. 00:15:27.15\00:15:28.29 Hannah looks to me like she is not very old. 00:15:28.32\00:15:31.97 Nope, she is 16 days old. 00:15:32.00\00:15:33.97 Sixteen days old 00:15:34.00\00:15:35.11 and I guess she is an American, born right here. 00:15:35.14\00:15:37.99 Yes. 00:15:38.02\00:15:39.05 So you just came back from Nepal 00:15:39.08\00:15:41.45 for some short vacation and to have the baby. 00:15:41.48\00:15:46.64 Little Hannah is now going to be traveling 00:15:46.67\00:15:49.03 to the country of Nepal with you. 00:15:49.06\00:15:50.73 Looking forward to that I'm sure that plane trip. 00:15:50.76\00:15:55.33 Tell me you are in Nepal, 00:15:55.36\00:15:56.90 how long have you been serving there? 00:15:56.93\00:15:59.23 We have been serving there, 00:15:59.26\00:16:00.30 we started the first of May 2011, 00:16:00.33\00:16:02.52 so little over 13 months or so. 00:16:02.55\00:16:04.71 Okay so you are both medical doctors, 00:16:04.74\00:16:07.44 and you're at Scheer Memorial Hospital. 00:16:07.47\00:16:09.30 Tell us little bit about the hospital. 00:16:09.33\00:16:12.09 The hospital Scheer Memorial, it started all from the work 00:16:12.12\00:16:16.51 of an Adventist physician missionary, 00:16:16.54\00:16:19.72 a first missionary to Nepal, Stanley Sturges. 00:16:19.75\00:16:22.88 He and his family were there, 00:16:22.91\00:16:25.63 just shortly after Nepal actually opened up. 00:16:25.66\00:16:27.67 Nepal is a kingdom for a long time 00:16:27.70\00:16:29.38 and around 50's or so opened up to outside help. 00:16:29.41\00:16:32.51 Before that there were no hospitals 00:16:32.54\00:16:33.66 or anything in the country. 00:16:33.69\00:16:35.30 So he approach the king, it was a kingdom at that time 00:16:35.33\00:16:38.52 and the king told them to go to a certain district 00:16:38.55\00:16:41.75 to set up a clinic. 00:16:41.78\00:16:43.53 And at that time that was the only medical--medical care 00:16:43.56\00:16:48.46 that people receive at that time. 00:16:48.49\00:16:49.73 And from that his clinic 00:16:49.76\00:16:51.42 eventually more work was established 00:16:51.45\00:16:54.04 and in time donations to the Scheer family, 00:16:54.07\00:16:57.59 the hospital was started and that was in 1960. 00:16:57.62\00:16:59.65 And it's continue to grow since then, 00:16:59.68\00:17:00.71 now it has 150 licensed beds 00:17:00.74\00:17:04.51 and it provides a whole range of services 00:17:04.54\00:17:07.04 to the people in that area. 00:17:07.07\00:17:08.55 Okay, so you both trained at Loma Linda 00:17:08.58\00:17:11.67 and you both shared a vision that we want to be involved 00:17:11.70\00:17:16.02 in mission, overseas mission. 00:17:16.05\00:17:18.90 What is the most-- 00:17:18.93\00:17:20.26 Up or down. 00:17:20.29\00:17:21.35 Yeah, Caleb, up or down whatever you want. 00:17:21.38\00:17:24.70 What's the most rewarding aspects 00:17:24.73\00:17:26.40 of what you were doing in Nepal. 00:17:26.43\00:17:27.62 How many up or down. Up, down. 00:17:27.65\00:17:29.86 I think the rewarding things are seeing 00:17:29.89\00:17:33.55 whatever sign of appreciation the people have. 00:17:33.58\00:17:35.70 Yeah. 00:17:35.73\00:17:37.04 And the people in Nepal are extremely friendly. 00:17:37.07\00:17:40.36 They live a very difficult life as the average, you know, 00:17:40.39\00:17:44.45 salary per person is less than $1.25 a day. 00:17:44.48\00:17:47.67 So it is still third world country in many respects. 00:17:47.70\00:17:50.65 We're just seeing certain patients 00:17:50.68\00:17:52.50 that you do your duty as a medical professional, 00:17:52.53\00:17:55.28 hopefully you're also planting seeds for the gospel. 00:17:55.31\00:17:57.77 But then you see their appreciation at the end 00:17:57.80\00:18:00.14 and so we just give glory to God for that. 00:18:00.17\00:18:02.38 Yes. 00:18:02.41\00:18:03.72 Now what about challenges that you face? 00:18:03.75\00:18:06.25 What are the major sort of challenges 00:18:06.28\00:18:08.18 to your work, Sally? 00:18:08.21\00:18:09.74 You're up and down. Up and down. 00:18:09.77\00:18:13.29 Well, I would say one of the major challenges 00:18:13.32\00:18:17.49 that I've seen just over the last year 00:18:17.52\00:18:20.11 would be just having updated medical equipment 00:18:20.14\00:18:24.12 for example supplies and things like that, 00:18:24.15\00:18:27.73 that, the hospital needs to provide 00:18:27.76\00:18:31.02 the best idea of care we can. Yeah. 00:18:31.05\00:18:34.26 As a mission hospital. That's right. 00:18:34.29\00:18:37.48 To effectively reach our patients in anyway 00:18:37.51\00:18:42.60 we can, you know, introduce the gospel to them. 00:18:42.63\00:18:44.72 Yeah. 00:18:44.75\00:18:46.10 Now, can you tell me an example, Sally, 00:18:46.13\00:18:48.33 you've been able to-- Yeah, 00:18:48.36\00:18:51.00 where you've been able to touch the life of somebody 00:18:51.03\00:18:53.59 or Aaron may be you could share. 00:18:53.62\00:18:56.14 Sure. 00:18:56.17\00:18:57.35 I think of one particular patient 00:18:57.38\00:18:58.76 who had come into our hospital, he was on a medical ward, 00:18:58.79\00:19:01.69 he came up with the diagnoses of pneumonia 00:19:01.72\00:19:03.72 and we on x-ray we saw that he had fluid around the lungs 00:19:03.75\00:19:07.93 which were required removing that through a needle 00:19:07.96\00:19:10.20 and we did that procedure, 00:19:10.23\00:19:11.39 he got better in a few days and went home. 00:19:11.42\00:19:13.91 I remember that in subsequent probably some months 00:19:13.94\00:19:16.81 or two later he was back again with the same problem. 00:19:16.84\00:19:19.57 And he was seen very discourage that his condition had worsened 00:19:19.60\00:19:23.29 and we treated him with the antibiotics 00:19:23.32\00:19:25.43 and we removed the fluid again. 00:19:25.46\00:19:27.09 And he felt after that 00:19:27.12\00:19:28.54 removing fluid second time we did-- 00:19:28.57\00:19:30.15 he felt significantly better in his breathing. 00:19:30.18\00:19:33.13 And I don't remember him having a smile on his face 00:19:33.16\00:19:36.18 the first time he was in the hospital, 00:19:36.21\00:19:37.43 he had a big smile 00:19:37.46\00:19:38.75 and he was very appreciative telling the nurse 00:19:38.78\00:19:41.26 who translate for us 00:19:41.29\00:19:42.38 how much he was thankful for feeling better. 00:19:42.41\00:19:45.15 And for me I was just doing-- 00:19:45.18\00:19:47.71 the first time didn't seem to work for him that well. 00:19:47.74\00:19:50.17 But then now he is so appreciative and thankful, 00:19:50.20\00:19:52.02 I thought hey, that's the great opportunity 00:19:52.05\00:19:53.88 to share and plant a seed 00:19:53.91\00:19:55.73 and so we actually had some literature, 00:19:55.76\00:19:58.30 I went back where we live, our living quarters 00:19:58.33\00:20:01.55 and then I brought back that book 00:20:01.58\00:20:03.17 which just tells about Jesus Christ. 00:20:03.20\00:20:05.14 And he was very happily accepted this. 00:20:05.17\00:20:07.17 So I was very thankful to be able to share in that situation. 00:20:07.20\00:20:11.68 Now because of course in Nepal the majority of people are 00:20:11.71\00:20:15.24 what like Hindu and Buddhist, is that correct? Yeah. 00:20:15.27\00:20:17.99 Probably about 80, 90% are Hindu 00:20:18.02\00:20:20.20 and the rest are Buddhist 00:20:20.23\00:20:21.26 and then Christianity is very, very a small minority there. 00:20:21.29\00:20:25.40 And then the Adventist church is even smaller still. 00:20:25.43\00:20:28.86 Yeah, but making a tremendous impact 00:20:28.89\00:20:31.39 through Scheer Memorial Hospital. 00:20:31.42\00:20:34.34 Can you tell me what are the one of the most challenging 00:20:34.37\00:20:37.87 cases that you've had with treating patients? 00:20:37.90\00:20:43.23 Oh, that's--that would be quite a long list 00:20:43.26\00:20:44.88 if we go through all those. 00:20:44.91\00:20:47.70 We've had a lot of situation where we just have to do it, 00:20:47.73\00:20:50.72 things we haven't seen before. 00:20:50.75\00:20:52.61 We weren't trained at medical school 00:20:52.64\00:20:53.74 for like lightning injuries. Yeah. 00:20:53.77\00:20:56.40 Well, it seem to have a lot of those 00:20:56.43\00:20:58.28 and there's lightning around but in Nepal over the-- 00:20:58.31\00:21:03.08 just in the few months before 00:21:03.11\00:21:04.38 we came on our annual leave we had storms 00:21:04.41\00:21:06.31 and at least in one week may be four or five lightning strikes 00:21:06.34\00:21:09.75 who come with burns and so we have to-- 00:21:09.78\00:21:12.26 how do we really treat this, you know. 00:21:12.29\00:21:14.10 And our general surgeon at the time 00:21:14.13\00:21:16.81 and they're having a surgery 00:21:16.84\00:21:18.37 complication from the lightning strikes. 00:21:18.40\00:21:19.70 So he learned also to treat that effectively so. 00:21:19.73\00:21:23.62 Yeah. 00:21:23.65\00:21:24.68 So people who might be watching this program 00:21:24.71\00:21:27.57 and they think yeah, I think 00:21:27.60\00:21:29.60 I might like to get involved in mission service 00:21:29.63\00:21:31.76 but I'm not sure what advise would you give them, Sally? 00:21:31.79\00:21:35.76 One thing for sure is if you're interested in mission service, 00:21:35.79\00:21:40.46 it's definitely a commitment. 00:21:40.49\00:21:42.91 You'd have to have passion and a vision, 00:21:42.94\00:21:45.88 those two things for sure 00:21:45.91\00:21:47.69 and then a little bit of maybe a sense of adventure in you. 00:21:47.72\00:21:53.22 But I would encourage as many people 00:21:53.25\00:21:57.00 especially if you're in your young age still 00:21:57.03\00:22:02.93 and anybody could be a missionary. 00:22:02.96\00:22:04.47 But if you have the stamina, 00:22:04.50\00:22:08.14 if you feel like you have the stamina 00:22:08.17\00:22:09.76 and the commitment and the passion for mission, 00:22:09.79\00:22:12.57 for sure definitely we would need all the help 00:22:12.60\00:22:16.92 we can get out in the third world countries especially. 00:22:16.95\00:22:20.60 We certainly need stamina to take a new born 00:22:20.63\00:22:23.42 and a two-year-old back to Nepal. 00:22:23.45\00:22:25.25 Thank you so much for joining us today. 00:22:25.28\00:22:26.98 Thank you.
