Ng, 00:01:24.33\00:01:26.61 executive secretary of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:26.64\00:01:30.12 to talk about-- you guessed it Mission. 00:01:30.15\00:01:33.12 But first up let's travel to Cambodia 00:01:33.15\00:01:35.76 to meet Peng, a Global Mission pioneer 00:01:35.79\00:01:38.61 I had the privilege of visiting recently. 00:01:38.64\00:01:41.22 Prom Peng is a Global Mission pioneer 00:01:48.39\00:01:50.67 working in Central Cambodia. 00:01:50.70\00:01:52.60 He goes door-to-door 00:01:52.63\00:01:54.24 visiting the people of his local community 00:01:54.27\00:01:56.06 and telling them about Jesus. 00:01:56.09\00:01:58.30 He shares the Gospel with them. 00:01:58.33\00:02:00.23 He becomes their friend. 00:02:00.26\00:02:01.90 Cambodia wasn't always open to the teaching of the Gospel. 00:02:05.96\00:02:09.49 Traditionally, a Buddhist country, 00:02:09.52\00:02:11.15 it has seen many wars and years of turmoil. 00:02:11.18\00:02:13.49 But about 15 years ago the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:02:13.52\00:02:16.82 started sending out Global Mission pioneers 00:02:16.85\00:02:19.07 to communities where there was little 00:02:19.10\00:02:20.88 or no Christian presence. 00:02:20.91\00:02:22.61 The village where Prom Peng works and lives 00:02:22.64\00:02:25.50 is one such village. 00:02:25.53\00:02:27.18 His wife, Long Chenda, 00:02:27.21\00:02:29.58 runs a small after school program 00:02:29.61\00:02:31.82 in the building that also serves as the local church. 00:02:31.85\00:02:35.03 She plays games with the children, 00:02:35.06\00:02:36.93 teaches them songs and tells them of a God 00:02:36.96\00:02:39.16 who created them and loves them very much. 00:02:39.19\00:02:42.85 One of the people that Peng and Chenda 00:02:42.88\00:02:44.72 met is Un Soksavuth. 00:02:44.75\00:02:46.99 Un worked at a local hospital close to Peng's house 00:02:47.02\00:02:49.96 and they became friends 00:02:49.99\00:02:51.02 when Peng would visit the hospital. 00:02:51.05\00:02:53.31 Un invited Peng to come to his house 00:02:53.34\00:02:55.41 and teach him about the Jesus he was always talking about. 00:02:55.44\00:02:58.74 Un was interested that this Jesus 00:02:58.77\00:03:00.69 could forgive him from his sins. 00:03:00.72\00:03:02.98 The local traditional religion taught 00:03:03.01\00:03:04.74 that sins could only be forgiven 00:03:04.77\00:03:06.13 if a gift was given at the local temple. 00:03:06.16\00:03:08.39 Un was poor and couldn't afford any gifts. 00:03:08.42\00:03:11.59 The thought of a poor man being saved intrigued him. 00:03:11.62\00:03:15.04 He wanted to learn more. 00:03:15.07\00:03:16.39 As they studied Un was converted and soon his wife joined him. 00:03:19.73\00:03:23.30 Un was able to share the Bible with his mother 00:03:23.33\00:03:25.94 right up until the time of her death. 00:03:25.97\00:03:28.08 Because of the Bible studies taught by Peng, 00:03:28.11\00:03:30.69 Un's life was changed. 00:03:30.72\00:03:32.47 He stopped going to clubs and getting into trouble. 00:03:32.50\00:03:35.41 His wife is happy because now she feels 00:03:35.44\00:03:37.71 that Un cares for his family and they spend time together. 00:03:37.74\00:03:41.70 They have found peace and new lives in Jesus. 00:03:41.73\00:03:45.38 Global Mission pioneers work all over the world 00:03:45.41\00:03:48.33 to spread the Gospel to people 00:03:48.36\00:03:49.88 who have never heard the name of Jesus. 00:03:49.91\00:03:51.72 Often times they work and live in very harsh conditions, 00:03:51.75\00:03:55.63 just so that they can help lives become changed. 00:03:55.66\00:03:59.44 Thank you for your prayerful support of Global Mission. 00:03:59.47\00:04:03.73 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:04:10.30\00:04:12.29 sends missionaries all around the world 00:04:12.32\00:04:14.54 and it is my pleasure to introduce you 00:04:14.57\00:04:17.25 to Aaron and Sally Sartin. 00:04:17.28\00:04:19.56 Thank you for joining us today. 00:04:19.59\00:04:21.65 And Aaron and Sally are visiting from the country of Nepal. 00:04:21.68\00:04:25.65 Now please for those of us who aren't too good 00:04:25.68\00:04:28.43 in our geography where is Nepal? 00:04:28.46\00:04:31.30 Well, an easiest way to think of that is 00:04:31.33\00:04:33.03 Nepal is sandwich right between 00:04:33.06\00:04:34.99 India to the South and China to the North. 00:04:35.02\00:04:37.28 Okay. Now this is not sea level, right? 00:04:37.31\00:04:41.81 Not a sea level. 00:04:41.84\00:04:43.17 India, of course you have the Ganges plain coming up 00:04:43.20\00:04:46.88 and that's the southern border with Nepal. 00:04:46.91\00:04:49.12 That is pretty close to sea level 00:04:49.15\00:04:50.60 but then very quickly get little rise up quickly into hills 00:04:50.63\00:04:53.56 and then at the very north of Nepal 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.29 along with China border 00:04:55.32\00:04:56.35 we have the Himalaya mountains. 00:04:56.38\00:04:57.53 Right. 00:04:57.56\00:04:58.71 And so do you get to see Mount Everest 00:04:58.74\00:05:00.82 from where you live on a clear day or-- 00:05:00.85\00:05:03.89 On the extremely clear day 00:05:03.92\00:05:05.59 we can perhaps see the peak of it 00:05:05.62\00:05:07.21 now these thoughts what the locals tell us. 00:05:07.24\00:05:08.99 Okay. So we believe that. 00:05:09.02\00:05:10.27 So, you're both medical doctors 00:05:10.30\00:05:12.03 serving at Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:05:12.06\00:05:14.53 what do you do? 00:05:14.56\00:05:16.04 What sort of patients do you see? 00:05:16.07\00:05:18.44 What-- I mean, what's the typical day like? 00:05:18.47\00:05:21.38 So, a typical day we start out off 00:05:21.41\00:05:23.33 with their morning something called morning report 00:05:23.36\00:05:25.80 where we come into the conference like type setting 00:05:25.83\00:05:30.44 and to talk about patients that were admitted overnight. 00:05:30.47\00:05:33.77 And then we go round on our own patients 00:05:33.80\00:05:35.80 in the hospital, 00:05:35.83\00:05:37.23 clinic then we'll start at around 10 a.m. 00:05:37.26\00:05:39.75 Well, we would suppose to start right at 10 a.m. 00:05:39.78\00:05:43.55 And morning clinic then ends at 1:00 in the afternoon. 00:05:43.58\00:05:47.57 Then we're getting an hour lunch break 00:05:47.60\00:05:49.91 and then we start back in there clinic from 2:00 to 4:00. 00:05:49.94\00:05:53.10 And then we would do our evening rounds 00:05:53.13\00:05:55.59 where we go check on our patients 00:05:55.62\00:05:57.01 again in the hospital in the evenings 00:05:57.04\00:05:59.35 before we close the day. 00:05:59.38\00:06:00.99 Now, when I say we close the day that's, 00:06:01.02\00:06:03.05 you know, our typical office our businesses hours 00:06:03.08\00:06:06.13 I guess you would say. 00:06:06.16\00:06:07.38 But after that you know we can get called any time 00:06:07.41\00:06:10.77 from the emergency room or from the ward 00:06:10.80\00:06:13.69 to attend to our patients 00:06:13.72\00:06:14.76 if they need more medical attention. 00:06:14.79\00:06:17.41 So that could happen any time 00:06:17.44\00:06:19.18 in the night pretty much 24/7. 00:06:19.21\00:06:22.45 So this is a fairly full time commitment 00:06:22.48\00:06:24.80 that you involved in. 00:06:24.83\00:06:26.15 Now adding to the commitment 00:06:26.18\00:06:29.13 is that you have a two-year-old son 00:06:29.16\00:06:31.47 and how old is your baby daughter? 00:06:31.50\00:06:33.39 She's a little over two weeks old. 00:06:33.42\00:06:34.92 Two weeks old. 00:06:34.95\00:06:36.36 So, you came back to the United States 00:06:36.39\00:06:37.92 for some vacation time and to have the baby. 00:06:37.95\00:06:39.98 Yes. 00:06:40.01\00:06:41.04 When do you get back to Nepal? The 23rd of August. 00:06:41.07\00:06:44.10 Okay, so, your family will have increased in size. 00:06:44.13\00:06:47.90 Now what made you decide that you wanted to serve 00:06:47.93\00:06:51.55 as medical mission workers? 00:06:51.58\00:06:55.87 I think I'm at least from nearly sides 00:06:55.90\00:06:58.51 always thought of the health field 00:06:58.54\00:07:00.54 is a good way to obviously to help people 00:07:00.57\00:07:03.31 and touch them in a certain way. 00:07:03.34\00:07:05.42 And later as my spiritual life prove us 00:07:05.45\00:07:08.12 that was in a great way 00:07:08.15\00:07:09.64 to open the door to sharing the gospel. 00:07:09.67\00:07:11.63 That's the ultimate goal in the missionary work. 00:07:11.66\00:07:14.83 And how I came into idea of serving overseas 00:07:14.86\00:07:19.54 I met my beautiful life 00:07:19.57\00:07:20.84 at Loma Linda University medical school 00:07:20.87\00:07:23.26 that where we went to the school together. 00:07:23.29\00:07:25.37 And it was in our first year 00:07:25.40\00:07:26.43 that we both assigned at for what's called 00:07:26.46\00:07:28.35 the Deferred Mission Appointee Program 00:07:28.38\00:07:30.50 which means like students who commit to serve overseas 00:07:30.53\00:07:34.36 when their training is complete. 00:07:34.39\00:07:36.11 And through that we were assigned 00:07:36.14\00:07:37.32 to eventually Southern Asia Division. 00:07:37.35\00:07:40.40 And then it would be a few years 00:07:40.43\00:07:41.84 where we decide exactly where we're going to go 00:07:41.87\00:07:44.68 that ended up being Nepal at Scheer Memorial. 00:07:44.71\00:07:47.00 Wow, so, you were both training at Loma Linda 00:07:47.03\00:07:50.70 and you met each other, you married 00:07:50.73\00:07:52.87 and then you had a shared vision for mission together. 00:07:52.90\00:07:55.30 Yes. 00:07:55.33\00:07:56.36 Wow, now of course you could be back here 00:07:56.39\00:07:58.98 in the states earning a whole lot more money 00:07:59.01\00:08:00.58 in working lesser hours. 00:08:00.61\00:08:02.86 Are you tempted? 00:08:02.89\00:08:05.72 Well, where we went to fulfill our commitments 00:08:05.75\00:08:08.29 that we made to the church 00:08:08.32\00:08:09.35 and defiantly we want to see the work 00:08:09.38\00:08:10.51 continue in that country. 00:08:10.54\00:08:12.50 Well, to be honest we think 00:08:12.53\00:08:14.57 what's best for our children and right now 00:08:14.60\00:08:16.99 I think they're still in a good place in Nepal, 00:08:17.02\00:08:19.30 it's a great experience for them to grow up 00:08:19.33\00:08:21.81 with that vision that we hope. 00:08:21.84\00:08:23.61 Oh, yeah. 00:08:23.64\00:08:24.71 They'll be just so-- into their lives, yeah. 00:08:24.74\00:08:26.75 But we certainly enjoyed our annual leave. 00:08:26.78\00:08:29.94 You don't say in order that to catch up 00:08:29.97\00:08:31.84 with family and friends again 00:08:31.87\00:08:33.26 yet we've revive to go back again. 00:08:33.29\00:08:36.31 Now tell me can you give me an example 00:08:36.34\00:08:39.49 how you've been able to touch the lives of people in Nepal. 00:08:39.52\00:08:45.87 I guess I can share a little bit 00:08:45.90\00:08:47.01 about my own experience in the hospital. 00:08:47.04\00:08:50.00 We have many patients actually coming 00:08:50.03\00:08:53.77 after having attempted suicide unfortunately. 00:08:53.80\00:08:56.87 It seems like that may have stem from sense of hopelessness 00:08:56.90\00:09:03.72 something that maybe their religion doesn't provide hope. 00:09:03.75\00:09:07.43 And so we've had a lot of patients 00:09:07.46\00:09:10.60 come through our hospital end up in our ICU 00:09:10.63\00:09:13.97 almost at the verge of death 00:09:14.00\00:09:15.58 but survive and it's at that point 00:09:15.61\00:09:18.57 where I feel as a physician 00:09:18.60\00:09:19.86 I can really trying to reach out to them 00:09:19.89\00:09:22.40 and provide some kind of a sense of hope as, 00:09:22.43\00:09:27.86 you know, talking to them about, 00:09:27.89\00:09:29.96 you know, some of our Christian values and beliefs 00:09:29.99\00:09:32.83 and kind of the hopefully pointing them to Jesus Christ 00:09:32.86\00:09:37.64 as their personal Savior and friend. 00:09:37.67\00:09:39.70 And I remember this one to particular patient 00:09:39.73\00:09:42.10 he was a male patient and basically his family 00:09:42.13\00:09:45.85 because he attempted suicide over and over and over again 00:09:45.88\00:09:48.82 and their families had to expense 00:09:48.85\00:09:50.33 so much on him with the hospital bills 00:09:50.36\00:09:52.60 and so forth that they've pretty much given up on him. 00:09:52.63\00:09:56.70 And so I-- his son actually came 00:09:56.73\00:09:58.70 to visit him in the hospital 00:09:58.73\00:09:59.88 just to scold him and just to tell him, 00:09:59.91\00:10:02.65 you know, his worth nothing and so on and so forth. 00:10:02.68\00:10:05.43 And so I felt really I-- bad for this patient 00:10:05.46\00:10:09.39 and I really took the time to talk to him and say, 00:10:09.42\00:10:13.47 you know, you can really your ways, 00:10:13.50\00:10:15.21 you know, there is hope and, you know, as a Christian 00:10:15.24\00:10:19.01 we've find hope in Jesus Christ. 00:10:19.04\00:10:22.19 And he actually said, well, I'm open to Christianity 00:10:22.22\00:10:25.94 I've always been open to Christianity 00:10:25.97\00:10:27.46 but these bad habits of mine that have kept me down. 00:10:27.49\00:10:34.96 Such as you know, smoking, drinking and other things. 00:10:34.99\00:10:38.80 So I did spend that time with him 00:10:38.83\00:10:41.19 and talk with him 00:10:41.22\00:10:43.42 and he seem to be very open to Christianity. 00:10:43.45\00:10:49.02 But one thing that I do regret is not 00:10:49.05\00:10:51.88 I've had little bit literature at home 00:10:51.91\00:10:54.37 that I want to give to him 00:10:54.40\00:10:56.01 but he was discharged before I could get it to him 00:10:56.04\00:10:59.44 but and I do keep him in their prayers. 00:10:59.47\00:11:01.73 And I think, you know, once you make a connection 00:11:01.76\00:11:04.17 with the patient, you know, you always remember them. 00:11:04.20\00:11:06.63 Oh, yeah, for sure. 00:11:06.66\00:11:08.23 But we have many patients come 00:11:08.26\00:11:09.55 through needing, needing a lot of counsel 00:11:09.58\00:11:13.79 and comfort and encouraging words 00:11:13.82\00:11:16.89 to keep them going. 00:11:16.92\00:11:18.71 Now talking about encouraging words 00:11:18.74\00:11:20.79 are there times that you find it a bit lonely 00:11:20.82\00:11:23.21 that it can a bit discouraging out 00:11:23.24\00:11:24.65 there by yourselves? 00:11:24.68\00:11:26.79 There are times in that especially for me 00:11:26.82\00:11:29.54 when we've had-- 00:11:29.57\00:11:31.10 maybe a string of bad clinical cases 00:11:31.13\00:11:33.83 like patients who come in extremely ill 00:11:33.86\00:11:36.65 and we in spite our best efforts with resources 00:11:36.68\00:11:38.96 that we have patients do die there unfortunately 00:11:38.99\00:11:42.35 and just in those situations trying to comfort 00:11:42.38\00:11:45.66 that the family and, you know, 00:11:45.69\00:11:48.30 provide them some sort of hope of hope. 00:11:48.33\00:11:51.69 Sometimes it shows a bit overwhelming. 00:11:51.72\00:11:53.38 Oh, yeah. 00:11:53.41\00:11:54.48 But I mean it was hope that 00:11:54.51\00:11:56.65 with the Lord as leading where you in the best 00:11:56.68\00:11:58.11 we can and we're planting seeds in their minds 00:11:58.14\00:12:01.07 of what the gospel really means. 00:12:01.10\00:12:02.87 But we've had the blessing of having their Id's 00:12:02.90\00:12:07.02 or their missionary physician families. 00:12:07.05\00:12:10.19 Working with them. 00:12:10.22\00:12:11.25 With working with us 00:12:11.28\00:12:12.64 who've been a tremendous support. 00:12:12.67\00:12:14.59 I'm sure. Yeah. 00:12:14.62\00:12:16.43 Well, thank you so much for joining us today 00:12:16.46\00:12:18.55 and sharing your experience. 00:12:18.58\00:12:20.61 Thank you. 00:12:20.64\00:12:21.70 You know, you're welcome. 00:12:21.73\00:12:23.06 And to our viewers at home, 00:12:23.09\00:12:24.99 thank you so much for your continuing prayers 00:12:25.02\00:12:27.42 and support for mission around the world 00:12:27.45\00:12:30.55 that extends to places like Kathmandu. 00:12:30.58\00:12:33.15 My guest is Dr. G.T. Ng, 00:13:12.12\00:13:14.30 who is the executive secretary for the General Conference. 00:13:14.33\00:13:18.73 And Dr. Ng, I'm so glad you could join us today. 00:13:18.76\00:13:21.86 I'm glad to be here. 00:13:21.89\00:13:22.92 Now when I heard the word secretariat 00:13:22.95\00:13:26.08 over which you are responsible, 00:13:26.11\00:13:27.88 I used to think in terms of policy, 00:13:27.91\00:13:30.15 procedures, paper work, et cetera. 00:13:30.18\00:13:32.64 I know that's all important 00:13:32.67\00:13:33.70 but tell me what is secretariat for? 00:13:33.73\00:13:38.89 That's precisely the question many people ask me 00:13:38.92\00:13:42.17 and my answer has always been 00:13:42.20\00:13:44.63 I'm still in the process of finding it out. 00:13:44.66\00:13:48.67 Secretariat is a complex 00:13:48.70\00:13:51.25 department in the General Conference. 00:13:51.28\00:13:55.18 Most people think that secretariat is the place 00:13:55.21\00:13:58.69 where we shuffle people and push them, 00:13:58.72\00:14:02.22 you know, we do a lot with policies 00:14:02.25\00:14:04.42 and procedures and rightly so we do. 00:14:04.45\00:14:07.28 But secretariat is much more than just to mending things 00:14:07.31\00:14:12.17 that we do from day-to-day. 00:14:12.20\00:14:14.09 Secretariat is thrust to chart the course 00:14:14.12\00:14:18.87 as far as the mission 00:14:18.90\00:14:19.99 and the price of the church is concerned. 00:14:20.02\00:14:22.17 We are intimately involved 00:14:22.20\00:14:28.41 in the training of missionary 00:14:28.44\00:14:31.46 in the recruiting of missionary, 00:14:31.49\00:14:33.84 in mapping out 00:14:33.87\00:14:35.61 what we can do with 10/40 Window. 00:14:35.64\00:14:38.30 What do we do with people live in cities 00:14:38.33\00:14:41.87 and other needed area around the world? 00:14:41.90\00:14:44.77 So it is a much bigger picture 00:14:44.80\00:14:47.55 that most people can see secretariat to be. 00:14:47.58\00:14:51.12 Now since you took on this position 00:14:51.15\00:14:54.82 almost three years ago you are focused very much 00:14:54.85\00:14:59.99 on the need for a combined effort in mission 00:15:00.02\00:15:03.39 and a mission board has been established. 00:15:03.42\00:15:06.05 Tell me the purpose of this. 00:15:06.08\00:15:07.42 Okay. 00:15:07.45\00:15:10.39 My observation of the church has been 00:15:10.42\00:15:13.06 that we tend to operate 00:15:13.09\00:15:15.19 individually in our separate silos. 00:15:15.22\00:15:19.71 We tend to compartmentalize the business of the church. 00:15:19.74\00:15:23.62 You know, if I'm jealous of the southern department 00:15:23.65\00:15:26.71 I will get whatever funding I can 00:15:26.74\00:15:29.60 to enhance the work of that department 00:15:29.63\00:15:32.33 which is fine. 00:15:32.36\00:15:33.39 You know, we need to be progressive 00:15:33.42\00:15:35.50 in whatever task we are called to do. 00:15:35.53\00:15:38.39 Unfortunately, there has been 00:15:38.42\00:15:42.00 little integration among this different entities 00:15:42.03\00:15:45.33 and different departments. 00:15:45.36\00:15:46.99 So one of my burdens is to see that 00:15:47.02\00:15:50.97 there is a greater degree of consolidation 00:15:51.00\00:15:54.21 and collaboration and synergy among different entities 00:15:54.24\00:15:58.67 so that we can be more focused in the area of mission 00:15:58.70\00:16:02.07 which is really the business of the church. 00:16:02.10\00:16:04.28 Without mission and we may as well drive taxi 00:16:04.31\00:16:08.98 and do some other things 00:16:09.01\00:16:10.04 that are not related to the gospel commission. 00:16:10.07\00:16:14.51 So there has been my great burden 00:16:14.54\00:16:16.50 and it seems that we are coming together 00:16:16.53\00:16:19.84 with the establishment of mission board. 00:16:19.87\00:16:22.99 Now mission strategy is not something accidental 00:16:23.02\00:16:27.28 but is something that is intentional. 00:16:27.31\00:16:30.84 We are pulling together the expertise in the church 00:16:30.87\00:16:36.25 as far as mission is concerned. 00:16:36.28\00:16:38.61 We are getting a level of input from Institute of World Mission 00:16:38.64\00:16:43.92 from ADVENTIST MISSION itself 00:16:43.95\00:16:46.00 from Adventist Volunteer Service 00:16:46.03\00:16:48.10 from Archive Statistics and Research. 00:16:48.13\00:16:51.16 All this different components will help us 00:16:51.19\00:16:53.30 to shape the mission of the church 00:16:53.33\00:16:56.55 and that's what mission board is all about. 00:16:56.58\00:16:58.71 Wonderful. 00:16:58.74\00:16:59.88 Now Dr. Ng, you mentioned Institute of World Mission 00:16:59.91\00:17:02.64 and we still have some Seventh-day Adventists 00:17:02.67\00:17:05.64 to express surprise when they hear 00:17:05.67\00:17:07.58 that we are still sending missionaries. 00:17:07.61\00:17:10.22 How important are missionaries to the mission of the church? 00:17:10.25\00:17:15.96 By enlarge the many areas of the world are self sufficient 00:17:15.99\00:17:22.61 as far as the human resource needs a concern. 00:17:22.64\00:17:27.76 Areas such as South American Division, 00:17:27.79\00:17:29.84 Inter American Division, the Asian divisions 00:17:29.87\00:17:37.84 they have enough personnel to mend the work. 00:17:37.87\00:17:41.73 However there are some areas of the world 00:17:41.76\00:17:43.70 where we are very thin on the ground, 00:17:43.73\00:17:46.58 in the Middle Eastern area, in the North African area. 00:17:46.61\00:17:51.04 In some parts of the African continent 00:17:51.07\00:17:53.86 we do not have enough personnel. 00:17:53.89\00:17:55.68 This is where cross cultural missionaries come in. 00:17:55.71\00:17:59.21 That's the reason why we have 900 plus 00:17:59.24\00:18:02.95 missionaries around the globe 00:18:02.98\00:18:04.62 sponsored by the General Conference. 00:18:04.65\00:18:06.55 So missionaries are still very much needed 00:18:06.58\00:18:08.90 and they are doing a tremendous job 00:18:08.93\00:18:11.19 in various institutions as well as frontline evangelism. 00:18:11.22\00:18:16.89 Now what role does the Institute of World Mission play? 00:18:16.92\00:18:21.77 Institute of World Mission or IWM is test 00:18:21.80\00:18:27.48 with the training of missionary. 00:18:27.51\00:18:30.50 So, once three times a year 00:18:30.53\00:18:33.41 we have what we call mission institutes 00:18:33.44\00:18:36.52 where missionaries before going out 00:18:36.55\00:18:39.27 to the field come together. 00:18:39.30\00:18:41.71 Husband, wife and children if they have children with them 00:18:41.74\00:18:45.60 they will come together for three week duration 00:18:45.63\00:18:48.26 either in Andrews University or in Thailand or in Nairobi. 00:18:48.29\00:18:53.35 These are the three usual places where we have meeting 00:18:53.38\00:18:55.92 when they receive instructions 00:18:55.95\00:18:58.59 from IWM stuff on what cross cultural 00:18:58.62\00:19:03.18 and mission is all about. 00:19:03.21\00:19:05.36 And how they can be prepared themselves for mission field 00:19:05.39\00:19:09.48 which is very different 00:19:09.51\00:19:11.01 from what they encounter in the homeland. 00:19:11.04\00:19:13.39 Yes, yes, yes. 00:19:13.42\00:19:14.92 Now they also do something in terms 00:19:14.95\00:19:16.47 of when missionaries come home. 00:19:16.50\00:19:18.65 What's that? 00:19:18.68\00:19:19.73 Once missionaries go on permanent returns, 00:19:21.86\00:19:25.23 they come back to North America 00:19:25.26\00:19:27.27 especially in the context of North America. 00:19:27.30\00:19:29.80 They have what they call special debriefing session 00:19:29.83\00:19:35.99 for missionaries as far as with the children. 00:19:36.02\00:19:38.68 Because after coming back from the field 00:19:38.71\00:19:42.02 you feel that you have lost touch with your homeland. 00:19:42.05\00:19:46.16 Right. 00:19:46.19\00:19:47.22 And so to be able to be accepted back to the-- 00:19:47.25\00:19:54.04 to the society from which you come 00:19:54.07\00:19:56.38 from takes a little instruction. 00:19:56.41\00:20:02.05 And so this is where your home coming program is all about. 00:20:02.08\00:20:08.72 Dr. Ng, thank you so much for giving us a brief window 00:20:08.75\00:20:11.43 into what is happening in mission. 00:20:11.46\00:20:13.05 Thank you so much. My pleasure. 00:20:13.08\00:20:14.11 My pleasure. Thank you. 00:20:14.14\00:20:15.65 The country of Indonesia 00:20:20.75\00:20:22.39 is made up of more than 17,000 islands 00:20:22.42\00:20:26.11 and it stretches from east of Thailand 00:20:26.14\00:20:28.99 to the western part of Papua New Guinea. 00:20:29.02\00:20:31.90 Home to more than 245 million people 00:20:31.93\00:20:35.90 it is the largest Islamic country in the world. 00:20:35.93\00:20:39.24 Its islands are covered with volcanoes, 00:20:39.27\00:20:41.88 jungles, sandy beaches 00:20:41.91\00:20:44.08 and some of the largest cities in Asia. 00:20:44.11\00:20:47.18 The capital Jakarta has a population 00:20:47.21\00:20:49.66 of more than nine million people. 00:20:49.69\00:20:52.38 This quarter two different medical projects 00:20:56.20\00:20:58.29 have been chosen in Indonesia 00:20:58.32\00:20:59.66 to receive a part of our 13th Sabbath offering. 00:20:59.69\00:21:03.11 The first is on the island of Sulawesi 00:21:03.14\00:21:05.50 in the northern city of Manado. 00:21:05.53\00:21:07.94 Here the church is operated the East Indonesia 00:21:07.97\00:21:10.48 Adventist Medical Center since 2007. 00:21:10.51\00:21:14.30 It started off as a small clinic many years ago 00:21:14.33\00:21:17.68 and now has 90 beds 00:21:17.71\00:21:19.30 and plays an important role 00:21:19.33\00:21:20.80 in the churches outreach to the local community. 00:21:20.83\00:21:24.17 Two to three times each month, 00:21:24.20\00:21:26.24 the hospital operates health clinics 00:21:26.27\00:21:28.27 at Adventists churches in the greater Manado area. 00:21:28.30\00:21:31.69 These clinics serves a means of helping the local church 00:21:31.72\00:21:35.11 connect to the outline community. 00:21:35.14\00:21:37.74 So that we want to reach them through clinics 00:21:41.47\00:21:44.77 and we want to introduce 00:21:44.80\00:21:48.77 that Jesus love them through the clinic 00:21:48.80\00:21:54.70 or give healing to the people when they come yearly. 00:21:54.73\00:21:59.75 The church also holds evangelistic campaigns 00:21:59.78\00:22:02.64 that run concurrent with the clinics 00:22:02.67\00:22:04.96 and over the past three years 00:22:04.99\00:22:07.03 more than 300 people have joined the church 00:22:07.06\00:22:09.46 because of the witnessing ministry. 00:22:09.49\00:22:12.20 Part of your 13th Sabbath offering 00:22:12.23\00:22:14.61 will fund these continuing community health clinics 00:22:14.64\00:22:17.59 over the next 12 months. 00:22:17.62\00:22:19.93 This will allow the hospital to extend 00:22:19.96\00:22:22.07 Christ healing hand to those who cannot travel 00:22:22.10\00:22:25.10 to the hospital or afford medical care. 00:22:25.13\00:22:28.00 And we'll also introduce many new people to Jesus. 00:22:28.03\00:22:32.18 The hospital also has a small church 00:22:41.27\00:22:43.98 so that staff, patients and the local community 00:22:44.01\00:22:47.05 can worship each Sabbath 00:22:53.67\00:22:56.89 They understand the important part 00:22:56.92\00:22:58.69 that they play in the mission of the church. 00:22:58.72\00:23:01.31 The hospital operates a surgical unit, 00:23:11.11\00:23:12.80 where people are searching for peace 00:23:12.83\00:23:14.82 as well as healing. 00:23:14.85\00:23:16.40 Fardy Malanda, serves as the hospital chaplain 00:23:24.03\00:23:27.70
