I'm standing here in front of Mandoto church 00:00:06.53\00:00:08.94 here in Madagascar 00:00:08.97\00:00:10.40 we have just seen 14 people being baptized. 00:00:10.43\00:00:13.28 Thanks to the work of a Global Mission Pioneer 00:00:13.31\00:00:15.50 and his district pastor. 00:00:15.53\00:00:17.81 I'm Rick Kajiura for Adventist Mission 00:00:17.84\00:00:19.64 stay tuned for Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:19.67\00:00:22.25 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:27.49\00:00:30.00 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:30.03\00:00:33.06 He gave us a mission. 00:00:33.09\00:00:35.75 Jesus said, go. 00:00:35.78\00:00:38.20 Go unto all the world, 00:00:38.23\00:00:40.61 telling them of His love. 00:00:40.64\00:00:43.11 This is our mission. 00:00:43.14\00:00:45.16 This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:45.19\00:00:47.17 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:52.48\00:00:54.84 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:54.87\00:00:56.37 On today's program we are focusing on the mission 00:00:56.40\00:00:58.98 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:59.01\00:01:01.11 around the world from remote tribal regions 00:01:01.14\00:01:04.23 to the large urban areas. 00:01:04.26\00:01:06.35 So many people still don't know Jesus 00:01:06.38\00:01:09.51 as a loving Savior. 00:01:09.54\00:01:11.28 Today we will be talking with Rick Kajiura, 00:01:11.31\00:01:13.22 communication director for Adventist Mission 00:01:13.25\00:01:15.70 and Conrad Vine, president of Adventist Frontier Missions. 00:01:15.73\00:01:20.02 But first let's travel to Madagascar an island nation 00:01:20.05\00:01:23.88 just off the coast of South-Eastern Africa. 00:01:23.91\00:01:29.05 My name is Romain 00:01:29.08\00:01:30.75 and I want to share with you the story of my conversion. 00:01:30.78\00:01:35.09 I used to belong to another faith 00:01:35.12\00:01:36.78 and I was studying at a University in Antananarivo, 00:01:36.81\00:01:39.93 the capital of Madagascar. 00:01:39.96\00:01:42.77 I'm in agriculture major, 00:01:42.80\00:01:44.42 and I was in need of an internship 00:01:44.45\00:01:46.57 so that I could continue my studies. 00:01:46.60\00:01:49.29 I couldn't find a place 00:01:49.32\00:01:50.55 that would take me for an internship, 00:01:50.58\00:01:52.08 but at the last moment I ended up 00:01:52.11\00:01:54.16 getting a summer placement 00:01:54.19\00:01:55.93 at the Adventist University, Zurcher, 00:01:55.96\00:01:58.10 which is operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:58.13\00:02:01.10 I was worried about what it might be like 00:02:01.13\00:02:03.67 to be with these Adventists, 00:02:03.70\00:02:05.77 but I had family that lived there so I thought 00:02:05.80\00:02:08.79 that it would be all right. 00:02:08.82\00:02:10.80 My mother even warned me not to be tricked 00:02:10.83\00:02:13.54 by the Adventists and their beliefs. 00:02:13.57\00:02:16.63 I went to Zurcher and worked on the farm. 00:02:16.66\00:02:19.14 I really enjoyed it since the university is located up 00:02:34.30\00:02:37.11 in the mountains and the air is clean. 00:02:37.14\00:02:39.80 The tall pine trees on the campus created 00:02:39.83\00:02:42.20 a beautiful and peaceful setting. 00:02:42.23\00:02:44.91 At the end of my first week of work my supervisor told me 00:02:44.94\00:02:47.95 to go and take Friday afternoon off work 00:02:47.98\00:02:50.36 so that I could prepare for the Sabbath. 00:02:50.39\00:02:53.42 I was shocked since I thought 00:02:53.45\00:02:54.94 that I must work a full day to fulfill my internship. 00:02:54.97\00:02:59.36 I went to the small house that I shared with my cousin 00:02:59.39\00:03:02.18 and didn't know what to do. 00:03:02.21\00:03:03.89 I asked him about the Sabbath and what it meant. 00:03:03.92\00:03:07.09 We discussed what he believed and then he invited me 00:03:07.12\00:03:09.36 to study the Sabbath School lesson with him. 00:03:09.39\00:03:13.00 I agreed and found that I really enjoyed 00:03:13.03\00:03:15.52 what I was learning. 00:03:15.55\00:03:17.43 As summer passed I found myself 00:03:17.46\00:03:19.51 spending more time studying with my cousins 00:03:19.54\00:03:22.05 and learning about what Adventists believe. 00:03:22.08\00:03:25.69 My mind was full of questions 00:03:25.72\00:03:27.44 and I felt that I had so many things 00:03:27.47\00:03:29.59 that I needed to know. 00:03:29.62\00:03:31.53 I enjoyed reading the Bible and discovering the truths 00:03:31.56\00:03:34.72 that I found there. 00:03:34.75\00:03:36.23 The peaceful setting of the University 00:03:36.26\00:03:38.21 helped me to focus on what I was learning. 00:03:38.24\00:03:41.37 Eventually, I decided to be baptized 00:03:41.40\00:03:44.07 and to join the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:03:44.10\00:03:47.44 I praise God that He sent me to Zurcher 00:03:47.47\00:03:50.40 so that I could learn about Him 00:03:50.43\00:03:52.08 and the blessing that is the Sabbath. 00:03:52.11\00:03:54.89 After I finish my agriculture degree, 00:03:54.92\00:03:57.19 I plan on returning to Zurcher and studying theology 00:03:57.22\00:04:00.76 so that I can learn how to share my new found faith with others. 00:04:00.79\00:04:05.09 Without this University, 00:04:05.12\00:04:06.44 I would not be a Seventh-day Adventist today. 00:04:06.47\00:04:10.08 Your mission offerings help to support the work 00:04:10.11\00:04:12.47 being done at Zurcher 00:04:12.50\00:04:13.85 and the students whose lives are being transformed, 00:04:13.88\00:04:16.95 just like mine. 00:04:16.98\00:04:19.05 Thank you for your faithful support 00:04:19.08\00:04:20.83 of the worldwide mission 00:04:20.86\00:04:22.41 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:04:22.44\00:04:24.80 My guest is Rick Kajiura 00:04:30.46\00:04:32.06 who is the Communication Director for Adventist Mission. 00:04:32.09\00:04:34.88 Good to have you along, Rick. 00:04:34.91\00:04:35.94 It's good to be here, Gary. 00:04:35.97\00:04:37.44 So communication director, what do you do? 00:04:37.47\00:04:40.56 Lot of people ask that. 00:04:40.59\00:04:42.15 Especially your boss. 00:04:42.18\00:04:45.44 Well, we tell the story 00:04:45.47\00:04:46.84 of what's happening in mission around the world 00:04:46.87\00:04:49.07 with Global Mission and with 00:04:49.10\00:04:52.00 where the mission offerings go, 00:04:52.03\00:04:53.47 what's happening with Adventist missionaries 00:04:53.50\00:04:55.46 and student missionaries and also let people know 00:04:55.49\00:04:59.05 the tremendous challenges 00:04:59.08\00:05:00.22 that still exist out there in mission. 00:05:00.25\00:05:02.25 Right, so you have websites, 00:05:02.28\00:05:04.40 TV programs, Adventists mission DVD, 00:05:04.43\00:05:06.68 Publications the list goes on and on. 00:05:06.71\00:05:08.76 And Facebook. Yeah, Facebook as well. 00:05:08.79\00:05:11.29 So Rick, tell me what are the challenges 00:05:11.32\00:05:14.34 that you see as you travel around the world? 00:05:14.37\00:05:16.27 What would you say the major mission challenges 00:05:16.30\00:05:18.18 that we are facing? 00:05:18.21\00:05:19.64 Well, there is still tremendously 00:05:19.67\00:05:21.62 large populations out there that 00:05:21.65\00:05:24.25 have never really heard about Jesus. 00:05:24.28\00:05:25.87 They've-- and what's more they have never really had 00:05:25.90\00:05:27.81 the opportunity to learn about Jesus. 00:05:27.84\00:05:30.26 They are living in societies and cultures 00:05:30.29\00:05:32.28 where there are very few Christians 00:05:32.31\00:05:35.40 and when there are Christians just like that you don't 00:05:35.43\00:05:38.40 really inter mingle much. 00:05:38.43\00:05:40.48 So their opportunities to learn about Jesus 00:05:40.51\00:05:42.41 just don't exist for large population in the world today. 00:05:42.44\00:05:46.59 So Rick, you recently returned from the Madagascar 00:05:46.62\00:05:50.44 which is a small island of the south-east tip 00:05:50.47\00:05:54.34 of the continent of Africa. 00:05:54.37\00:05:55.88 I got it-- that's right. That's right, yeah, absolutely. 00:05:55.91\00:05:57.34 Okay, I have trouble pronouncing the name little. 00:05:57.37\00:05:59.69 So, so this island-- tell us about the nation. 00:05:59.72\00:06:04.19 Well, the nation-- well, first of all, 00:06:04.22\00:06:06.24 you know, you look at the map of the world 00:06:06.27\00:06:08.13 and you see this Island of Madagascar 00:06:08.16\00:06:10.13 and you think its small but it's actually very large. 00:06:10.16\00:06:13.29 So when we landed there 00:06:13.32\00:06:14.39 we landed in Antananarivo which is the capital 00:06:14.42\00:06:17.27 and if you think Madagascar is hard to say 00:06:17.30\00:06:20.26 try the name of the capital and the names of the people 00:06:20.29\00:06:22.55 because they have very long names over there. 00:06:22.58\00:06:25.42 But then we drove and we sat at the Adventist university 00:06:25.45\00:06:28.30 just outside of the city there 00:06:28.33\00:06:30.19 and then we drove well, seem like days 00:06:30.22\00:06:33.50 but we went down to the central conference 00:06:33.53\00:06:35.51 and we visited a church down there 00:06:35.54\00:06:37.77 and we have got some video here 00:06:37.80\00:06:39.17 if you want to show some of this video 00:06:39.20\00:06:41.16 but we visited this church in a place called Mandoto. 00:06:41.19\00:06:45.50 And this is where a Global Mission pioneer is working. 00:06:45.53\00:06:48.80 And so they had a baptism that day, 00:06:48.83\00:06:50.45 more than dozen people were baptized 00:06:50.48\00:06:53.14 and we had a chance to watch that baptism 00:06:53.17\00:06:55.29 but one of the interesting things to me was 00:06:55.32\00:06:57.88 how they fill that baptismal tank. 00:06:57.91\00:07:00.63 Because down the road there, 00:07:00.66\00:07:01.87 there is a water pump a hand pump 00:07:01.90\00:07:03.77 and they are bringing in these yellow jerry cans 00:07:03.80\00:07:07.97 and they would go there and they would fill it up 00:07:08.00\00:07:09.61 so the baptismal tank just had about enough water 00:07:09.64\00:07:12.79 for somebody to get full immersed. 00:07:12.82\00:07:15.43 And that's where they are doing their baptism. 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.28 But that church was crowded that day. 00:07:17.31\00:07:19.17 I think people would come from all different places 00:07:19.20\00:07:22.79 and they had baptism after baptism. 00:07:22.82\00:07:25.33 And it was interesting because somebody was there 00:07:25.36\00:07:26.97 from the national press as well and they covered it 00:07:27.00\00:07:29.07 for the national press in Madagascar. 00:07:29.10\00:07:31.73 Now, this nation is it a Christian country what? 00:07:31.76\00:07:35.35 No, the majority are traditional religions 00:07:35.38\00:07:39.60 more than 50% traditional religions 00:07:39.63\00:07:42.25 and then there are, 00:07:42.28\00:07:43.47 you know, a handful of Christians. 00:07:43.50\00:07:45.99 So it's kind of a novelty 00:07:46.02\00:07:47.83 to see this baptism ritual taking place. 00:07:47.86\00:07:51.78 Well, I think the majority of the people 00:07:51.81\00:07:53.16 who are there in the church 00:07:53.19\00:07:54.22 are from surrounding Adventist churches 00:07:54.25\00:07:56.75 who would come in for this special day for the baptism. 00:07:56.78\00:08:00.29 One pioneer-- we met a pioneer named John Luke 00:08:00.32\00:08:04.16 he has been working there. 00:08:04.19\00:08:05.66 He said that since he was a little boy 00:08:05.69\00:08:07.17 he is wanted to be a pastor 00:08:07.20\00:08:08.54 and so he went and studied theology. 00:08:08.57\00:08:10.75 Now they have hired him 00:08:10.78\00:08:11.81 as a Global Mission pioneer to work there 00:08:11.84\00:08:14.31 and so he works for the district pastor who has, 00:08:14.34\00:08:16.65 you know, a lot of churches 00:08:16.68\00:08:18.07 and so it's really good to have a pioneer working with him. 00:08:18.10\00:08:21.48 Now you use the term pioneer 00:08:21.51\00:08:23.69 but for somebody who may be watching 00:08:23.72\00:08:25.12 this program for the first time 00:08:25.15\00:08:26.43 what is a Global Mission pioneer? 00:08:26.46\00:08:27.84 A Global Mission pioneer is somebody from the country 00:08:27.87\00:08:30.85 who already speaks the language, 00:08:30.88\00:08:32.62 who understands the culture, 00:08:32.65\00:08:34.65 who gets a small stipend to go out 00:08:34.68\00:08:37.20 and spend a year or more 00:08:37.23\00:08:39.42 planting a new group of believers 00:08:39.45\00:08:41.77 or helping a newly started church 00:08:41.80\00:08:44.38 to grow and establish itself. 00:08:44.41\00:08:47.15 Now it always fascinates me 00:08:47.18\00:08:49.23 when I meet pioneer to see 00:08:49.26\00:08:51.38 what approach he or she is taking 00:08:51.41\00:08:53.25 because in different parts of the world 00:08:53.28\00:08:54.47 they try different methods 00:08:54.50\00:08:55.73 because it can be hard work moving into a new area 00:08:55.76\00:08:58.76 or among new people group even start. 00:08:58.79\00:09:01.53 What sort of methods did you find them 00:09:01.56\00:09:03.47 using in Madagascar for planting churches? 00:09:03.50\00:09:06.54 They are visiting homes and-- 00:09:06.57\00:09:08.35 and meeting people where they are. 00:09:08.38\00:09:11.58 And so this particular pioneer John Luke 00:09:11.61\00:09:16.26 he has been meeting with people 00:09:16.29\00:09:18.76 but also there to get an active pathfinder program done there 00:09:18.79\00:09:22.16 so children come in. 00:09:22.19\00:09:23.35 And I think there was a shot in there 00:09:23.38\00:09:25.26 of somebody in a pathfinder uniform 00:09:25.29\00:09:28.02 and there are a lot of children. 00:09:28.05\00:09:30.22 Madagascar is an economically challenged country right now. 00:09:30.25\00:09:34.92 They have had some problems 00:09:34.95\00:09:36.64 in terms of relations with other nations there 00:09:36.67\00:09:38.82 and so they had some economic sanctions. 00:09:38.85\00:09:41.24 So they are struggling 00:09:41.27\00:09:43.05 and if you go to the Adventist University there 00:09:43.08\00:09:46.10 they are building-- I met a missionary couple there. 00:09:46.13\00:09:48.90 They are from the Philippines, Roger and Evelyn 00:09:48.93\00:09:51.68 and they are working there helping to build up 00:09:51.71\00:09:54.26 the infrastructure the university. 00:09:54.29\00:09:56.01 His background is building and so he is there 00:09:56.04\00:09:58.76 and helping them to get new buildings. 00:09:58.79\00:10:01.63 They had a typhoon hurricane 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.30 come through there recently knocked over bunch of tress. 00:10:03.33\00:10:06.06 So they have cut them all up stacked them on the campus 00:10:06.09\00:10:08.31 and they are using those to make boards, 00:10:08.34\00:10:10.93 to make wood so they can build new buildings on the campus. 00:10:10.96\00:10:15.17 Now Rick, we hear reports 00:10:15.20\00:10:16.49 from the southern half of the continent of Africa 00:10:16.52\00:10:18.67 of the church booming with thousands of baptisms. 00:10:18.70\00:10:23.44 Is this the case in Madagascar as well? 00:10:23.47\00:10:26.25 You know, Madagascar is more of a challenge. 00:10:26.28\00:10:28.57 You know, when we saw the pioneers-- 00:10:28.60\00:10:30.55 I have visited pioneers in other areas 00:10:30.58\00:10:32.29 where they get a much harder time 00:10:32.32\00:10:33.96 but to say that this is booming, 00:10:33.99\00:10:35.98 you know, you go to some of the countries 00:10:36.01\00:10:37.24 in South Africa they really are. 00:10:37.27\00:10:38.71 They are doing extremely well. Sothern Africa. 00:10:38.74\00:10:40.93 Yeah, Sothern Africa but because of the economic challenges 00:10:40.96\00:10:43.99 and the high number of enemies. 00:10:44.02\00:10:48.41 One of the things they said was 00:10:48.44\00:10:50.36 they struggle with those who do come 00:10:50.40\00:10:53.28 from certain backgrounds with ancestor worship. 00:10:53.31\00:10:59.24 And the cult of the dead they call it 00:10:59.27\00:11:02.33 where after a year they dig up the bones of the ancestors 00:11:02.36\00:11:05.21 they consult their ancestors and different thing. 00:11:05.24\00:11:07.84 So that was one of the mission challenges 00:11:07.87\00:11:09.50 they said they were facing there. 00:11:09.53\00:11:11.49 Yeah, because once they moved to Christianity 00:11:11.52\00:11:14.16 there is such a whole raft of social 00:11:14.19\00:11:17.28 and family pressures that-- 00:11:17.31\00:11:20.32 they have to cut ties with lot of that. 00:11:20.35\00:11:22.34 Yeah and I think we discount sometimes 00:11:22.37\00:11:24.88 living in either Christian or post Christian areas 00:11:24.91\00:11:27.87 where families have a hard time 00:11:27.90\00:11:30.14 because so much of everything that you do culturally 00:11:30.17\00:11:33.31 is tied to religion in many countries. 00:11:33.34\00:11:35.55 And so to make a choice to become a Christian 00:11:35.58\00:11:37.93 or to become a Seventh-day Adventist 00:11:37.96\00:11:40.13 can prove a lot of pressure with your family. 00:11:40.16\00:11:42.79 Sure and there are other challenges too. 00:11:42.82\00:11:45.60 You know, we visited another church 00:11:45.63\00:11:47.85 and they have a building they don't have a floor 00:11:47.88\00:11:50.80 but one of the families walk six kilometers 00:11:50.83\00:11:52.78 which is about three and three quarter miles 00:11:52.81\00:11:54.91 to get to the church. 00:11:54.94\00:11:56.27 And when I said well, you know that's incredible 00:11:56.30\00:11:57.84 they said others and other families 00:11:57.87\00:11:58.92 that walks 12 kilometers. Oh, well. 00:11:58.95\00:12:01.38 Well, we are running of time Rick, 00:12:01.41\00:12:02.44 but thanks so much for sharing with us. 00:12:02.47\00:12:04.26 Thank you, Gary. 00:12:04.29\00:12:05.32 And viewers at home, please continue to remember 00:12:05.35\00:12:08.79 places like Madagascar in your prayers. 00:12:08.82\00:12:12.29 God is working but there are still tremendous challenges 00:12:12.32\00:12:15.00 to share the love of Jesus and the hope 00:12:15.03\00:12:17.24 that can only come through Jesus Christ. 00:12:17.27\00:12:19.12 My guest is Pastor Conrad Vine 00:12:58.07\00:13:00.38 and Conrad is the president of Adventist Frontier Missions 00:13:00.41\00:13:05.07 which is a supporting ministry 00:13:05.10\00:13:06.51 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:13:06.54\00:13:08.61 Conrad, pleasure to have you with us today. 00:13:08.64\00:13:11.18 Now you have a mission initiative 00:13:11.21\00:13:14.96 that focuses on planting new congregations, where? 00:13:14.99\00:13:20.03 AFM began in 1985 Gary, and grew out to realization 00:13:20.06\00:13:24.45 that also may be 9,000 people groups in our world 00:13:24.48\00:13:28.64 over 7,000 of them have to yet to hear the gospel 00:13:28.67\00:13:30.91 in any way shape or form. 00:13:30.94\00:13:33.34 And so we focus our energies 00:13:33.37\00:13:35.23 on sending missionaries to proclaim the gospel 00:13:35.26\00:13:37.08 in those un-reached people groups 00:13:37.11\00:13:38.98 where there is as yet no Adventist presence. 00:13:39.01\00:13:41.89 So you are specifically focused on the where Adventist are not? 00:13:41.92\00:13:46.37 Absolutely, yes. 00:13:46.40\00:13:47.92 Now can you give me some sort of an idea 00:13:47.95\00:13:51.02 of the spread, the width of the initiative. 00:13:51.05\00:13:54.64 How many countries are you working in? 00:13:54.67\00:13:56.61 We operate currently in about 20 countries. 00:13:56.64\00:13:59.71 Some of those countries are in Africa, 00:13:59.74\00:14:02.10 some are in South East Asia and the sub-continent, 00:14:02.13\00:14:05.39 others are in Europe post Christian countries 00:14:05.42\00:14:08.98 and we operate-- we operate in some countries 00:14:09.01\00:14:11.62 where one is not suppose to send missionaries. 00:14:11.65\00:14:14.41 They are closed countries and in those countries 00:14:14.44\00:14:17.08 we had to be very careful about 00:14:17.11\00:14:18.44 how we do our mission work 00:14:18.47\00:14:20.09 and it requires a very dedicated 00:14:20.12\00:14:21.59 individual team to work in those places. 00:14:21.62\00:14:24.66 Now Conrad, you yourself have been involved in mission 00:14:24.69\00:14:28.83 in many different parts of the world. 00:14:28.86\00:14:31.42 You have a rich history of the involvement now 00:14:31.45\00:14:33.87 why is mission so important to you? 00:14:33.90\00:14:36.35 Because, I want Jesus to come back soon. 00:14:36.38\00:14:39.12 I take joy having my devotions with Jesus every morning 00:14:39.15\00:14:42.99 and because I find joy being with Him every morning 00:14:43.02\00:14:45.42 I want to see Him one day face to face. 00:14:45.45\00:14:48.03 And Jesus said that "This gospel of the kingdom 00:14:48.06\00:14:49.99 will be proclaimed to the whole world 00:14:50.02\00:14:51.64 and then the end shall come." 00:14:51.67\00:14:53.23 And so my part in bringing about the coming of Jesus 00:14:53.26\00:14:56.29 and ending human suffering and bringing in a new heavens 00:14:56.32\00:14:59.52 and new earth is to work for that kingdom of God myself. 00:14:59.55\00:15:03.26 Wonderful, now Conrad, Adventist Frontier Missions 00:15:03.29\00:15:07.84 to be a missionary with your organization 00:15:07.87\00:15:10.92 that's not some sort of casual decision 00:15:10.95\00:15:12.83 you can just make on this at the moment 00:15:12.86\00:15:15.81 it's a pretty strong commitment, right. 00:15:15.84\00:15:18.87 Absolutely, we have student missionaries 00:15:18.90\00:15:21.46 who go out for one year. 00:15:21.49\00:15:22.96 We have Korea missionaries 00:15:22.99\00:15:24.41 who go out for may be six to fifteen years in some cases 00:15:24.44\00:15:28.61 and they learn the language 00:15:28.64\00:15:30.28 they study the local culture, 00:15:30.31\00:15:32.36 then they prepare contextualized evangelistic materials 00:15:32.39\00:15:35.13 and raise local churches. 00:15:35.16\00:15:37.05 And we are also just rolling out as we speak 00:15:37.08\00:15:39.54 to new missionary models. 00:15:39.57\00:15:40.92 One we call the Explorer 00:15:40.95\00:15:42.65 and that is for baby boomer to spend two or three weeks 00:15:42.68\00:15:45.73 to do initial research for new missionary. 00:15:45.76\00:15:48.40 And the other is called the Waldensian model 00:15:48.43\00:15:50.59 and we are looking for people once can may be retires to 00:15:50.62\00:15:53.87 serve for a year or two in an overseas language institute 00:15:53.90\00:15:56.81 and share their faith 00:15:56.84\00:15:58.69 in on a basics of friendship evangelism. 00:15:58.72\00:16:01.18 So we have missionaries from not around the world 00:16:01.21\00:16:04.39 but a third of our missionaries 00:16:04.42\00:16:05.48 come from outside of the United States 00:16:05.51\00:16:07.84 and we have sending officers in Canada and South Africa 00:16:07.87\00:16:11.90 and we are registering in Britain 00:16:11.93\00:16:13.28 and by God's grace Latin America. 00:16:13.31\00:16:15.54 And we want to open the door to mission service 00:16:15.57\00:16:17.99 to Adventists around the world to feel called 00:16:18.02\00:16:20.36 and gifted by God to this particular ministry. 00:16:20.39\00:16:23.27 Now, how do you work with the Adventist church? 00:16:23.30\00:16:26.72 We work very closely with the Adventist church. 00:16:26.75\00:16:29.04 We don't enter a project 00:16:29.07\00:16:31.23 unless we get the support of the local church administration. 00:16:31.26\00:16:34.70 We have agreements with almost every division 00:16:34.73\00:16:37.36 of the Adventist church worldwide 00:16:37.39\00:16:39.52 and with each of our projects 00:16:39.55\00:16:41.42 we have steering committees 00:16:41.45\00:16:43.28 in which the local church leadership can have involvements 00:16:43.31\00:16:46.37 and input from the very beginning of our projects. 00:16:46.40\00:16:49.09 And our goal is to raise up bodies of believers 00:16:49.12\00:16:51.83 into Adventist churches awaiting the coming of Jesus 00:16:51.86\00:16:55.23 and then our missionaries withdraw 00:16:55.26\00:16:57.13 and we hand over those bodies of believers 00:16:57.16\00:16:58.94 to the local Adventist church leadership 00:16:58.97\00:17:01.36 whether it be a conference 00:17:01.39\00:17:02.42 or a mission or a field leadership. 00:17:02.45\00:17:04.05 Yeah and another-- 00:17:04.08\00:17:06.65 you are working with global mission 00:17:06.68\00:17:08.05 on some projects where some of your missionaries 00:17:08.08\00:17:10.81 can help supervise Global Mission pioneers 00:17:10.84\00:17:12.89 in certain areas. 00:17:12.92\00:17:14.38 Absolutely, we are all on the same team 00:17:14.41\00:17:17.63 and there are parts of the world 00:17:17.66\00:17:19.71 where AFM Missionaries 00:17:19.74\00:17:22.70 their ministry will be strengthened 00:17:22.73\00:17:24.05 by having Global Mission pioneers working with them. 00:17:24.08\00:17:26.60 And so we have instant on agreement 00:17:26.63\00:17:28.34 as you say with the General Conference 00:17:28.37\00:17:30.26 to share our missionaries and Global Mission pioneers 00:17:30.29\00:17:32.87 were appropriate to strengthen the cause of Christ 00:17:32.90\00:17:35.68 in our local community. 00:17:35.71\00:17:38.06 Share with me one of your favorite stories 00:17:38.09\00:17:40.78 of your missionaries. 00:17:40.81\00:17:42.66 One of my favorite stories of missionaries well, 00:17:42.69\00:17:46.77 I just love hearing about people coming to God 00:17:46.80\00:17:49.64 and I have some good friends 00:17:49.67\00:17:51.35 who are now Adventist AFM missionaries 00:17:51.38\00:17:54.28 who are serving in Africa 00:17:54.31\00:17:55.79 who came a very resistant religious group 00:17:55.82\00:17:58.87 and they gave up a lot when they accepted Jesus 00:17:58.90\00:18:01.98 as their Lord and Savior 00:18:02.01\00:18:03.83 and God spoke to them in dreams 00:18:03.86\00:18:05.68 and convicted them that He want to them 00:18:05.71\00:18:07.83 to serve as missionaries in turn. 00:18:07.86\00:18:10.04 And so with that family now serving Africa 00:18:10.07\00:18:13.20 as missionaries in a very resistant people group 00:18:13.23\00:18:16.38 and by God's grace they have a large 00:18:16.41\00:18:18.49 and a very growing ministry in that community. 00:18:18.52\00:18:21.02 Wonderful, now by choosing 00:18:21.05\00:18:23.94 to go to un-entered area and difficult areas 00:18:23.97\00:18:27.45 you are not going to be having the thousands of baptisms 00:18:27.48\00:18:30.00 that we see in other parts of the world 00:18:30.03\00:18:33.71 but your ministry is so essential. 00:18:33.74\00:18:36.78 Absolutely, when you consider the history of missions 00:18:36.81\00:18:40.26 in the 10/40 mission window 00:18:40.29\00:18:42.46 when Adoniram Judson died 00:18:42.49\00:18:44.70 there were may be less than 30 converts in Burma 00:18:44.73\00:18:47.57 and yet Burma today is a major source 00:18:47.60\00:18:49.61 of Christian growth and spiritual gifts 00:18:49.64\00:18:52.72 based on his mission work. 00:18:52.75\00:18:54.58 And we see in other parts of world 00:18:54.61\00:18:56.15 such as Burkina Faso in West Africa 00:18:56.18\00:18:59.41 and in South East Asia 00:18:59.44\00:19:02.08 where a small seed grows into a beautiful flower. 00:19:02.11\00:19:05.76 And so we do have growing congregations of people 00:19:05.79\00:19:08.97 from almost every major religious background 00:19:09.00\00:19:11.66 as a result of our AFM Missionaries 00:19:11.69\00:19:13.76 ministry in their service. 00:19:13.79\00:19:15.86 And these converts they take many years to win 00:19:15.89\00:19:20.22 and but really at the heart of the matter 00:19:20.25\00:19:22.84 when we do our human work 00:19:22.87\00:19:25.08 the work of the conversions the work of the Holy Spirit 00:19:25.11\00:19:28.04 and may be the most powerful thing we can do as missionaries 00:19:28.07\00:19:30.50 and may be our viewers can do 00:19:30.53\00:19:32.34 is to choose a people group of the world 00:19:32.37\00:19:34.25 and pray that Jesus will be manifest 00:19:34.28\00:19:36.15 in a powerful way in that group 00:19:36.18\00:19:38.25 and let God bring the conversion 00:19:38.28\00:19:40.45 our missionaries are there 00:19:40.48\00:19:41.55 to walk with new converts to mentor them 00:19:41.58\00:19:44.01 what it means to be a Christian 00:19:44.04\00:19:45.80 and to nurture that growth in the Holy Spirit. 00:19:45.83\00:19:48.37 Wonderful, now how can our viewers find out 00:19:48.40\00:19:50.81 more information about AFM? 00:19:50.84\00:19:52.99 Well, they can check out our website www.AFMonline.org 00:19:53.02\00:19:58.84 and they can call into our office. 00:19:58.87\00:20:00.64 They can receive a regular magazine it's free of charge. 00:20:00.67\00:20:03.65 It has missionary stories from around the world every month 00:20:03.68\00:20:06.87 and we are Thank you so much Conrad, appreciate it. 00:20:27.94\00:20:30.80 And viewers at home, 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.18 as Pastor Vine has just pointed out 00:20:32.21\00:20:34.72 there are so many people groups 00:20:34.75\00:20:36.72 that have millions of people 00:20:36.75\00:20:38.92 who still have not even heard the name of Jesus Christ. 00:20:38.95\00:20:42.35 Please remember AFM 00:20:42.38\00:20:43.45 and their missionaries in your prayers. 00:20:43.48\00:20:47.03 [speaking in foreign language] 00:20:47.06\00:20:52.03 By firelight, an Adventist pastor tells a Bible story. 00:21:01.85\00:21:05.80 [speaking in foreign language] 00:21:05.83\00:21:10.05 Most of his captive audience cannot read or write, 00:21:10.08\00:21:13.71 but they are eager to learn. 00:21:13.74\00:21:17.77 [speaking in foreign language] 00:21:17.80\00:21:22.77 In the desert flatlands of northern Namibia 00:21:32.09\00:21:34.42 lives the tribe of the Himba. 00:21:34.45\00:21:36.75 These simple people have lived the same way 00:21:36.78\00:21:39.36 for hundreds of years. 00:21:39.39\00:21:41.46 Families form small communities 00:21:41.49\00:21:43.65 where fathers, mothers, children, spouses 00:21:43.68\00:21:46.99 and grandchildren all live together. 00:21:47.02\00:21:50.35 Their houses are simple huts 00:21:50.38\00:21:52.14 that are surrounded by thorn bushes 00:21:52.17\00:21:54.20 that create a wall to protect the families from predators. 00:21:54.23\00:21:58.00 The Himba live on milk and meat from their livestock, 00:21:58.03\00:22:01.21 as well as corn, pumpkin 00:22:01.24\00:22:03.43 and other produce they can grow in their small gardens. 00:22:03.46\00:22:06.23 The young men of the family work all day 00:22:16.77\00:22:19.19 herding the cattle and goats, 00:22:19.22\00:22:20.97 while the smaller children head out in search of water. 00:22:21.00\00:22:24.12 There are not many opportunities 00:22:35.02\00:22:36.40 for these children to obtain an education, 00:22:36.43\00:22:39.69 so their education is passed down 00:22:39.72\00:22:41.77 as it has been for centuries. 00:22:41.80\00:22:44.18 They are an oral culture. 00:22:44.21\00:22:46.45 [speaking in foreign language] 00:22:46.48\00:22:50.45 About 15 years ago, 00:23:06.39\00:23:08.16 Adventist Frontier Mission's workers, 00:23:08.19\00:23:10.65 Gideon and Pam Peterson 00:23:10.68\00:23:12.68 started working among the Himba, 00:23:12.71\00:23:14.60 but they found the work to be very difficult. 00:23:14.63\00:23:17.51 Gideon ran into many roadblocks. 00:23:17.54\00:23:21.11 I was perceived as a young person, 00:23:21.14\00:23:23.70 I was young, but I was perceived as a child I should say, 00:23:23.73\00:23:27.69 and I didn't know that until much later, 00:23:27.72\00:23:31.36 and they don't respect children teaching an adult. 00:23:31.39\00:23:36.34 And so that-- that even though 00:23:36.37\00:23:40.66 I didn't see it at the time, 00:23:40.69\00:23:42.44 it became a big challenge eventually. 00:23:42.47\00:23:46.27 The Himba are taught to respect the views 00:23:46.30\00:23:48.87 and opinions of their elders. 00:23:48.90\00:23:51.18 When an elder shares knowledge 00:23:51.21\00:23:53.24 it is accepted by the whole tribe. 00:23:53.27\00:23:55.98 The Himba worship the spirits of their dead ancestors. 00:23:56.01\00:23:59.69 The family elder will sit by a fire 00:23:59.72\00:24:02.30 and consult with the dead family members 00:24:02.33\00:24:04.33 to obtain their wisdom and guidance. 00:24:04.36\00:24:07.06 It is only the elders 00:24:07.09\00:24:08.63 that are allowed to pass on 00:24:08.66\00:24:10.21 any new knowledge or information. 00:24:10.24\00:24:13.17 All of this information is passed on 00:24:13.20\00:24:15.96 through the telling of stories. 00:24:15.99\00:24:18.31 Every night they sit around the fire 00:24:18.34\00:24:20.20 telling stories, sharing stories. 00:24:20.23\00:24:22.29 When people meet, 00:24:22.32\00:24:24.59 it's important to share my story 00:24:24.62\00:24:27.72 where I come from, 00:24:27.75\00:24:29.41 to hear the story of the other person, 00:24:29.44\00:24:32.29 so stories have a very important bonding method 00:24:32.32\00:24:37.17 to build community. 00:24:37.20\00:24:39.69 Gideon was finally accepted 00:24:39.72\00:24:41.75 and was allowed to join the fireside sessions 00:24:41.78\00:24:44.35 and was even able to share of stories of his own. 00:24:44.38\00:24:47.27 But when the Petersons tried to share the gospel, 00:24:47.30\00:24:49.96 they found that the Himba had no concept of sin 00:24:49.99\00:24:53.11 or many of the other biblical teachings 00:24:53.14\00:24:55.32 that we take for granted. 00:24:55.35\00:24:57.23 For years they struggled to reach the Himba people. 00:24:57.26\00:25:00.69 Then they discovered a simple solution. 00:25:00.72\00:25:06.34 [speaking in foreign language] 00:25:06.37\00:25:10.34 The methods that we have been trying 00:25:23.74\00:25:26.97 to use over the last four or five years 00:25:27.00\00:25:30.77 experimenting with, is oral methods 00:25:30.80\00:25:34.08 using the Himba music, the Himba poetry, 00:25:34.11\00:25:37.24 Himba singing, dancing, chanting, 00:25:37.27\00:25:42.41 story telling methods and then 00:25:42.44\00:25:45.58 putting that into a biblical world view 00:25:45.61\00:25:50.51 or the biblical world view into those kinds of styles. 00:25:50.54\00:25:55.10 Gideon has trained a local lay pastor, Kapitongo, 00:25:55.13\00:25:58.60 to oversee the production of the audio files 00:25:58.63\00:26:01.08 and they are now using solar panel devices called God-Pods 00:26:01.11\00:26:04.97 to distribute the audio Bible stories 00:26:05.00\00:26:07.18 to the Himba communities. 00:26:07.21\00:26:08.57 [speaking in foreign language] 00:26:08.60\00:26:12.73 The Petersons have now moved onto another assignment, 00:26:12.76\00:26:15.58 but Kapitongo will continue the outreach 00:26:15.61\00:26:18.47 to the Himba tribes. 00:26:18.50\00:26:21.17 Your faithful support of the mission offering 00:26:21.20\00:26:23.91 will help to pay for the production 00:26:23.94\00:26:25.65 of the audio files 00:26:25.68\00:26:27.17 as well as buy the solar powered players 00:26:27.20\00:26:29.49 that will be distributed to the Himba communities 00:26:29.52\00:26:32.20 throughout all of Northern Namibia. 00:26:32.23\00:26:34.84 Thank you for supporting the mission 00:26:34.87\00:26:36.69 of the
