When we look at the world today 00:00:07.85\00:00:09.09 we see that the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:09.12\00:00:11.13 is growing in many, many areas. 00:00:11.16\00:00:13.23 The southern half of the continent of Africa, 00:00:13.26\00:00:15.38 parts of Asia, 00:00:15.41\00:00:17.14 South and Central America tremendous growth 00:00:17.17\00:00:19.52 and we thank God for this. 00:00:19.55\00:00:21.27 But there are still parts of the world 00:00:21.30\00:00:22.68 such as the 10/40 Window 00:00:22.71\00:00:24.67 where most people have still not even heard 00:00:24.70\00:00:27.60 the name of Jesus, 00:00:27.63\00:00:29.10 what a tremendous mission challenge. 00:00:29.13\00:00:31.58 Welcome, to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:31.61\00:00:33.81 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:38.28\00:00:40.72 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:40.75\00:00:43.76 He gave us a mission. 00:00:43.79\00:00:46.35 Jesus said, go. 00:00:46.38\00:00:48.98 Go unto all the world, 00:00:49.01\00:00:51.20 telling them of His love. 00:00:51.23\00:00:53.84 This is our mission. 00:00:53.87\00:00:55.90 This is our "Global Mission." 00:00:55.93\00:00:57.83 Hello, I'm Gary Krause, 00:01:03.72\00:01:05.41 welcome to the program. 00:01:05.44\00:01:06.96 On Global Mission Snapshots we love to share stories about 00:01:06.99\00:01:10.40 God touching people's hearts, 00:01:10.43\00:01:12.66 about the church growing, about new groups being planted. 00:01:12.69\00:01:16.82 But every now and then we need to stop 00:01:16.85\00:01:19.18 and we need to look at the remaining challenge. 00:01:19.21\00:01:22.74 Some 2,000 years ago Jesus commissioned His disciples 00:01:22.77\00:01:26.89 to carry the gospel to all the world 00:01:26.92\00:01:29.53 and to make disciples of all nations. 00:01:29.56\00:01:32.36 Today, that gospel commission still hangs over us unfulfilled. 00:01:32.39\00:01:37.35 On today's program we will look again at that challenge. 00:01:37.38\00:01:41.69 We will also be talking with Don Noble, 00:01:41.72\00:01:43.53 about how Maranatha Volunteers International 00:01:43.56\00:01:46.66 is helping the church become beacons of light 00:01:46.69\00:01:49.48 in their communities. 00:01:49.51\00:01:51.00 And we will also talk with video producer, Dan Weber 00:01:51.03\00:01:54.07 about how the good news was shared in a Moldova prison. 00:01:54.10\00:01:58.14 But first, the remaining challenge. 00:01:58.17\00:02:01.70 It's Sabbath and around the world 00:02:01.73\00:02:03.53 millions of Seventh-day Adventist will be 00:02:03.56\00:02:06.17 worshipping in churches of various types today. 00:02:06.20\00:02:10.25 But here in Turkey 00:02:10.28\00:02:11.89 fewer than 80 Seventh-day Adventist believers 00:02:11.92\00:02:14.68 will be meeting throughout the entire country. 00:02:14.71\00:02:18.10 We have fewer than 80 baptized Adventist. 00:02:18.13\00:02:22.40 Around the world our statistics are one Adventist 00:02:22.43\00:02:25.37 for every 424 people. 00:02:25.40\00:02:28.45 Here in Turkey its one for every one million people. 00:02:28.48\00:02:33.38 What a tremendous challenge. 00:02:33.41\00:02:36.85 But its not just here, 00:02:36.88\00:02:38.90 think also of the large population spread out 00:02:38.93\00:02:41.93 in territories to North Africa and throughout Asia. 00:02:41.96\00:02:46.85 Here in Tibet, there is a rich history 00:02:46.88\00:02:49.80 of culture and religion. 00:02:49.83\00:02:51.97 People here are very committed, very spiritual 00:02:52.00\00:02:56.12 but you know its 20 years since Global Mission began 00:02:56.15\00:03:00.03 and the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:03:00.06\00:03:02.54 is not part of the history of Tibet 00:03:02.57\00:03:04.27 there is not one Seventh-day Adventist believer here. 00:03:04.30\00:03:08.40 As I walk the streets I see quite a bit of poverty. 00:03:08.43\00:03:11.58 I have little children coming up to me begging 00:03:11.61\00:03:13.52 and as I look into their eyes I ask the question 00:03:13.55\00:03:16.76 what is the future for them? 00:03:16.79\00:03:18.56 Now I to know that God is working through all cultures, 00:03:18.59\00:03:22.63 through all people's working on hearts and minds 00:03:22.66\00:03:24.77 to bring them to Himself 00:03:24.80\00:03:27.19 but He has called us 00:03:27.22\00:03:28.68 to share His love and as I look at Tibet-- 00:03:28.71\00:03:31.70 I look the huge populations all through Asia 00:03:31.73\00:03:35.17 the teaming mega cities of people 00:03:35.20\00:03:37.46 most of them have never even heard the name of Jesus. 00:03:37.49\00:03:40.36 And just think what a tremendous difference 00:03:40.39\00:03:42.72 it would make in their lives 00:03:42.75\00:03:44.94 to know that there is a God who loves them, 00:03:44.97\00:03:46.96 who cares for them and they need have no fear 00:03:46.99\00:03:49.50 of the spirit world. 00:03:49.53\00:03:51.13 God has a plan and He has invited each of us 00:03:51.16\00:03:53.85 to be part of that if we only will say, yes. 00:03:53.88\00:03:58.18 You know, I think of other territories around the world. 00:03:58.21\00:04:01.28 I think of regions that are very different to hear 00:04:01.31\00:04:03.39 places where Christianity was very strong at one stage 00:04:03.42\00:04:07.27 but today it is dying. 00:04:07.30\00:04:08.78 The city of Geneva was one of the most 00:04:24.18\00:04:26.16 critical cradles of protestant reformation. 00:04:26.19\00:04:29.68 It's hard to believe that this city today 00:04:29.71\00:04:32.10 has become one of the most 00:04:32.13\00:04:33.32 secularized cities in all of Europe. 00:04:33.35\00:04:35.85 Behind me is the reformation wall that commemorates 00:04:38.33\00:04:41.56 so many of the leaders of the reformation 00:04:41.59\00:04:44.35 that gave their lives, that gave their all for the gospel 00:04:44.38\00:04:48.52 and the moral above them it says in Latin 00:04:48.55\00:04:51.50 "after darkness light" 00:04:51.53\00:04:53.76 that's what they were fighting, 00:04:53.79\00:04:55.11 that's what they were living their lives 00:04:55.14\00:04:57.06 for the light of Jesus Christ. 00:04:57.09\00:04:59.14 And you have to wonder, 00:04:59.17\00:05:00.20 what those reformers would think today 00:05:00.23\00:05:02.05 after darkness light. 00:05:02.08\00:05:04.68 As we see that Christianity, 00:05:04.71\00:05:06.36 through out Europe is starting to fade 00:05:06.39\00:05:09.08 and that light for those reformers fought for 00:05:09.11\00:05:12.77 what is going to be the future? 00:05:12.80\00:05:14.56 Behind me here in Istanbul, Turkey is the Bosphorus Bridge, 00:05:18.08\00:05:22.82 bridging the two contents of Europe and Asia. 00:05:22.85\00:05:26.90 Europe of course with its declining Christian population 00:05:26.93\00:05:30.68 and Asia with its booming population 00:05:30.71\00:05:32.91 60 percent of the world's population 00:05:32.94\00:05:35.76 but the vast majority of these people groups 00:05:35.79\00:05:38.12 have never even heard the name of Jesus Christ. 00:05:38.15\00:05:41.73 So it's great that we celebrate 00:05:41.76\00:05:43.26 the progress of the church around the world 00:05:43.29\00:05:45.06 and we thank God for it. 00:05:45.09\00:05:47.15 But, let's never ever loose side of the need 00:05:47.18\00:05:49.88 to continue praying for to continue supporting, 00:05:49.91\00:05:53.84 to continue working for the vast numbers of people 00:05:53.87\00:05:58.38 who still need to learn about Jesus Christ 00:05:58.41\00:06:01.28 and a message that we have to share with them. 00:06:01.31\00:06:04.62 I'm delighted to welcome Don Noble, the president 00:06:10.91\00:06:13.26 of Maranatha Volunteers International to our program. 00:06:13.29\00:06:16.52 Don, Maranatha does so much for the church around the world 00:06:16.55\00:06:20.38 and I have heard you described this many times 00:06:20.41\00:06:22.93 as you were a responsive organization. 00:06:22.96\00:06:25.03 Yes. How does that work? 00:06:25.06\00:06:26.95 Well, we don't build things 00:06:26.98\00:06:28.72 that we are not asked to build. 00:06:28.75\00:06:29.80 Right. 00:06:29.83\00:06:30.86 We are not wanted in the place for God 00:06:30.89\00:06:32.47 because there is lot of places that need the physical buildings 00:06:32.50\00:06:36.76 and the requests are huge 00:06:36.79\00:06:38.47 and across many areas of the world. 00:06:38.50\00:06:41.76 So, yeah, we are responsive 00:06:41.79\00:06:44.11 and we listen to what the church says. 00:06:44.14\00:06:45.97 We try to sit down and understand 00:06:46.00\00:06:49.06 what their needs are not just come in and say 00:06:49.09\00:06:51.45 here's what we are gonna do for you. 00:06:51.48\00:06:53.86 So, I guess responsive is a good word. 00:06:53.89\00:06:56.47 Yeah, and we appreciate so much 00:06:56.50\00:06:57.93 the support you give around the world. 00:06:57.96\00:07:00.20 Now Don, Maranatha is involved 00:07:00.23\00:07:02.20 a myriad of different types of projects 00:07:02.23\00:07:04.38 but I want to focus on the one day church 00:07:04.41\00:07:07.01 and the one day school 00:07:07.04\00:07:08.63 and most specifically what's happening in the-- 00:07:08.66\00:07:12.03 in Africa at the moment. 00:07:12.06\00:07:13.74 What are you doing to help the church in Africa? 00:07:13.77\00:07:18.01 Well, we have actually interacted 00:07:18.04\00:07:21.55 with all the three major divisions there 00:07:21.58\00:07:24.01 and we worked quite extensively in two of them. 00:07:24.04\00:07:27.59 We started primarily 00:07:27.62\00:07:28.88 in the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division 00:07:28.91\00:07:31.10 at the request of Paul Ratsara, the division president. 00:07:31.13\00:07:35.29 He came to me one day and he said I understand that, 00:07:35.32\00:07:39.05 Ron Watts the former president 00:07:39.08\00:07:41.31 in the area of India asked you for 10,000 churches, 00:07:41.34\00:07:44.75 he says that's really nothing. 00:07:44.78\00:07:48.38 I said really? It seem like a lot to me 00:07:48.41\00:07:51.65 but he says no we actually seriously 00:07:51.68\00:07:54.69 we need 50,000 projects in our division 00:07:54.72\00:07:58.19 and this is take a look at Zambia 00:07:58.22\00:08:01.14 with 700 plus thousand members, look at Zimbabwe, 00:08:01.17\00:08:05.94 Zimbabwe with over 700,000 members 00:08:05.97\00:08:09.49 take a look at the great needs in Angola, 00:08:09.52\00:08:11.66 in Mozambique and Malawi and you name it 00:08:11.69\00:08:15.45 and we said okay let's sit down and talk, 00:08:15.48\00:08:18.52 let's see viability of being able to do this. 00:08:18.55\00:08:22.20 And so we met with all the leadership people 00:08:22.23\00:08:24.21 and I said, okay, 00:08:24.24\00:08:25.96 we can't do everything all at once that's not possible. 00:08:25.99\00:08:30.85 Where do you want us to start? 00:08:30.88\00:08:33.98 Amen. 00:08:34.01\00:08:35.70 He says, we need you to start in our toughest area. 00:08:35.73\00:08:38.23 I said, oh, thank you very much. 00:08:38.26\00:08:40.14 Appreciate that. 00:08:40.17\00:08:41.20 Which will that be? He said, Mozambique. 00:08:41.23\00:08:44.35 Let's start in Mozambique. 00:08:44.38\00:08:46.36 It's okay if that's what the church requires there, 00:08:46.39\00:08:49.56 we will take a look at Mozambique, so we did. 00:08:49.59\00:08:51.32 Now, that was tough because it's been a country 00:08:51.35\00:08:53.37 with civil war for many years. 00:08:53.40\00:08:54.95 Yeah, they were in war for like 30 years 00:08:54.98\00:08:56.97 so their education system had been pretty much default 00:08:57.00\00:09:02.65 even the church leadership weren't that educated, 00:09:02.68\00:09:05.52 the union leaders with grade school level education so-- 00:09:05.55\00:09:11.87 so we went in there, 00:09:11.90\00:09:12.93 we started building churches and schools 00:09:12.96\00:09:14.65 and it's been a blessing. 00:09:14.68\00:09:17.40 A tough blessing. Yeah. 00:09:17.43\00:09:19.03 It's also been a place 00:09:19.06\00:09:20.25 where we were privileged to drill wells 00:09:20.28\00:09:23.55 at all the churches and the schools 00:09:23.58\00:09:25.55 that we built which is-- 00:09:25.58\00:09:28.22 we wanted to have a place 00:09:28.25\00:09:29.63 where people would come for two kinds of water-- 00:09:29.66\00:09:33.38 water of life and the water for life 00:09:33.41\00:09:36.44 and so that's-- that's been a great blessing. 00:09:36.47\00:09:38.71 And now they tell me that after about 800 churches 00:09:38.74\00:09:43.26 and six or eight large schools 00:09:43.29\00:09:46.36 that Mozambique not the bottom anymore 00:09:46.39\00:09:49.90 its up in the centre in terms of, 00:09:49.93\00:09:52.49 you know, tithe and offering membership 00:09:52.52\00:09:54.81 is growing by its thousands 00:09:54.84\00:09:56.53 so its need to see that this project 00:09:56.56\00:09:59.85 that came to us as a request from that division 00:09:59.88\00:10:03.07 is started to bare fruit 00:10:03.10\00:10:04.61 for the kingdom of God. Yeah. 00:10:04.64\00:10:06.34 People for the kingdom of God. 00:10:06.37\00:10:07.53 I mean, there is no other purposes to, 00:10:07.56\00:10:09.53 you don't just build buildings, 00:10:09.56\00:10:11.00 the world doesn't need another construction company 00:10:11.03\00:10:13.81 but you need construction for specific purpose. 00:10:13.84\00:10:17.16 The schools, some of the bigger schools 00:10:17.19\00:10:18.92 that we built in Mozambique 00:10:18.95\00:10:20.55 have been name the best schools in those countries. 00:10:20.58\00:10:23.16 Is that right? Oh, yeah. 00:10:23.19\00:10:24.67 But, you know, then we went to Malawi 00:10:24.70\00:10:27.63 we built 600 or 700 churches there, 00:10:27.66\00:10:30.36 there's couple more hundred to go. 00:10:30.39\00:10:31.97 Started in Zimbabwe, work in Zambia. 00:10:32.00\00:10:34.83 Oh, one of the great challenges that's for us right now 00:10:34.86\00:10:38.53 actually came as a request directly from Pastor Ted Wilson. 00:10:38.56\00:10:42.38 He was in Angola he says, 00:10:42.41\00:10:44.03 please do something for Angola. 00:10:44.06\00:10:46.66 They of course been-- 00:10:46.69\00:10:47.72 they are also Portuguese speaking, 00:10:47.75\00:10:49.25 they are also been in war, 00:10:49.28\00:10:50.85 they have 80 % of their people are illiterate. 00:10:50.88\00:10:55.63 So we have set a country director in there, 00:10:55.66\00:10:58.52 we are taking a look at education 00:10:58.55\00:11:00.89 to campuses to replace-- 00:11:00.92\00:11:03.05 there are over 200 campuses 00:11:03.08\00:11:04.60 the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:11:04.63\00:11:05.84 used to have in Angola those are all destroyed, 00:11:05.87\00:11:09.22 well they sold the land. 00:11:09.25\00:11:11.75 They need to replace those campuses 00:11:11.78\00:11:14.25 with new buildings. 00:11:14.28\00:11:15.41 So we are taking a look at that 00:11:15.44\00:11:16.73 and it's a huge challenge its tens of millions of dollars. 00:11:16.76\00:11:20.84 And-- if I talk about impact 00:11:20.87\00:11:23.86 there is a window here of time in Angola 00:11:23.89\00:11:26.85 to get in there and make it happen 00:11:26.88\00:11:28.87 so we are trying to be responsive in-- 00:11:28.90\00:11:31.08 you need we need lot of partners 00:11:31.11\00:11:33.13 to make that happen but huge benefits 00:11:33.16\00:11:36.20 for the people in their lives now 00:11:36.23\00:11:38.53 and for eternity and so we are jumping in. 00:11:38.56\00:11:41.61 Yeah, now, I'm this is just so exciting 00:11:41.64\00:11:44.07 and I know the need is far greater than we can imagine 00:11:44.10\00:11:47.32 but just briefly 00:11:47.35\00:11:48.38 what difference are these schools 00:11:48.41\00:11:50.22 making in their community, just in a sentence. 00:11:50.25\00:11:52.79 Well, if you can't really put in a sentence 00:11:52.82\00:11:55.73 because you are talking about people's lives to-- 00:11:55.76\00:11:59.49 there is the haves and the haves not 00:11:59.52\00:12:02.09 even in the country of Angola. 00:12:02.12\00:12:03.30 You can see it on a straight line 00:12:03.33\00:12:05.28 and people can see it themselves 00:12:05.31\00:12:07.17 and they know that you cross that line only with education 00:12:07.20\00:12:10.39 and the church only grows with education. 00:12:10.42\00:12:13.83 People's lives are what at stake here 00:12:13.86\00:12:16.13 and if they-- if they can't educate it 00:12:16.16\00:12:18.96 they can't even think 00:12:18.99\00:12:20.22 beyond where they were at the low levels. 00:12:20.25\00:12:22.74 So when you come in 00:12:22.77\00:12:24.90 the government is asking us to do it. 00:12:24.93\00:12:26.63 Come back and be the church that you were 40 years ago 00:12:26.66\00:12:31.45 in the area of leadership and education, 00:12:31.48\00:12:33.87 come back and do that we will give you the land. 00:12:33.90\00:12:36.02 Come do it, do it now, do it quick. Fantastic. 00:12:36.05\00:12:38.57 So, I know its exciting 00:12:38.60\00:12:40.73 throughout the whole division there's many opportunities 00:12:40.76\00:12:43.27 and of course the other division brought a request too. 00:12:43.30\00:12:46.74 Don, thanks so much for sharing with us today. 00:12:46.77\00:12:49.84 If you like to find out more information 00:12:49.87\00:12:51.60 go to Maranatha.org. 00:12:51.63\00:12:54.77 My guest is Daniel Weber, 00:13:34.07\00:13:35.73 who is a video producer for Adventist Mission. 00:13:35.76\00:13:38.41 Welcome, Dan. Good to be here, Gary. 00:13:38.44\00:13:40.32 Now, you are normally behind the camera. 00:13:40.35\00:13:42.25 Yes. 00:13:42.28\00:13:43.34 I'm glad that you are here today 00:13:43.37\00:13:44.51 because I want to talk to you a little bit about 00:13:44.54\00:13:46.86 what's its like behind the camera, 00:13:46.89\00:13:48.18 some of the experiences. 00:13:48.21\00:13:49.83 I mean you go to some fairly remote areas of the world 00:13:49.86\00:13:53.19 and just the sheer logistics of getting stories 00:13:53.22\00:13:55.95 can sometimes be difficult. 00:13:55.98\00:13:57.74 Yeah, I started keeping a country list 00:13:57.77\00:14:01.44 when I had been about a year to enter this job, 00:14:01.47\00:14:04.08 because I didn't-- 00:14:04.11\00:14:05.17 other people I had worked with at GC 00:14:05.20\00:14:06.92 when I'm-- former to GC 00:14:06.95\00:14:08.45 I was working for a Adventist for some of the television. 00:14:08.48\00:14:10.78 Now, GC what's GC? 00:14:10.81\00:14:11.86 The General Conference I'm sorry, we are often-- 00:14:11.89\00:14:13.49 Head quarters of the Adventist Church, thank you. 00:14:13.52\00:14:14.77 And people said that they would keep 00:14:14.80\00:14:16.95 a record of how many countries they have been to. 00:14:16.98\00:14:19.23 So I started and I'm over a 100 now. Okay. 00:14:19.26\00:14:22.43 And some of the logistics and some of the things 00:14:22.46\00:14:24.88 you have to run through to get stories are pretty amazing. 00:14:24.91\00:14:28.79 One story I flew I think 00:14:28.82\00:14:32.46 five different flights into the bunch 00:14:32.49\00:14:33.78 of different road rides and drove in cars 00:14:33.81\00:14:36.41 and was ferried around just to get one story 00:14:36.44\00:14:39.46 but they are usually really good stories. 00:14:39.49\00:14:41.18 Yeah, now, what are you looking for in a story? 00:14:41.21\00:14:44.22 What I want is, someone or an area 00:14:44.25\00:14:49.42 where the gospel needs to go 00:14:49.45\00:14:51.47 or where offerings, or funded a project 00:14:51.50\00:14:54.74 that are reaching people in an instant way 00:14:54.77\00:14:57.05 or a member who is doing an interesting type of outreach. 00:14:57.08\00:15:02.53 And one of the projects that was-- 00:15:02.56\00:15:07.06 that was logistically was really hard to get into. 00:15:07.09\00:15:09.91 I found about a project of a Pastor in Moldova 00:15:09.94\00:15:13.35 who is doing prison outreach. 00:15:13.38\00:15:15.99 We tend to think of prisons 00:15:16.02\00:15:17.22 you think of big gigantic buildings with, 00:15:17.25\00:15:19.08 you know, couple of thousand inmates 00:15:19.11\00:15:20.60 and its very sterile environment almost and stuff. 00:15:20.63\00:15:24.59 But something said try to get the story 00:15:24.62\00:15:26.56 so I contacted-- 00:15:26.59\00:15:27.84 I was going to Moldova any way to share some stories. 00:15:27.87\00:15:30.55 Moldova is a small country that used to be a part of Russia 00:15:30.58\00:15:34.54 but culturally it's much similar to Romania. 00:15:34.57\00:15:37.84 In fact, it used to be part of Romania 00:15:37.87\00:15:39.15 and it was fought over between-- 00:15:39.18\00:15:41.61 between the Romanian's and Russian's. 00:15:41.64\00:15:44.33 And this Pastor is doing his outreach 00:15:44.36\00:15:48.01 and so I wrote an email said can we go? 00:15:48.04\00:15:50.26 I want to go get this story 00:15:50.29\00:15:52.30 and they replied back and said we can try 00:15:52.33\00:15:54.33 you probably won't be able to get in, 00:15:54.36\00:15:56.52 but we need your passport information. 00:15:56.55\00:15:58.04 So I sent him a photocopy of my passport 00:15:58.07\00:16:00.86 I waited 30 days didn't hear anything. 00:16:00.89\00:16:02.75 Emailed again and they said 00:16:02.78\00:16:04.03 we have permission to go. 00:16:04.06\00:16:05.21 I was so excited this is great. 00:16:05.24\00:16:06.97 So this was at the end of a two week trip 00:16:07.00\00:16:09.33 I had been all over Russia, shooting stories and stuff. 00:16:09.36\00:16:11.91 So just before I flew home 00:16:11.94\00:16:13.32 I flew to Moldova to spend the weekend there 00:16:13.35\00:16:15.51 and on Sabbath morning we got up early 00:16:15.54\00:16:19.34 and we drove three hours to get to this prison. 00:16:19.37\00:16:22.26 And I'm having all these ideas 00:16:22.29\00:16:23.77 of what it's gonna look like 00:16:23.80\00:16:24.84 and of course none of them were accurate. 00:16:24.87\00:16:27.50 And we pull up in this small building 00:16:27.53\00:16:29.94 right on the edge of a river 00:16:29.97\00:16:31.70 and we go inside 00:16:31.73\00:16:33.65 and the captain the guard says you can't go in. 00:16:33.68\00:16:37.40 And this pastor goes here 00:16:37.43\00:16:39.40 probably one or two times a month, 00:16:39.43\00:16:41.00 he has seven prisons that he is visiting 00:16:41.03\00:16:43.57 and he said no we are to gonna go in, 00:16:43.60\00:16:47.04 we have permission we arranged this. 00:16:47.07\00:16:48.61 But you can't come in with a camera. 00:16:48.64\00:16:50.35 No, I arranged this 00:16:50.38\00:16:51.42 I talked to the warden about this it's okay. 00:16:51.45\00:16:53.63 And the guard is like no you are not doing it. 00:16:53.66\00:16:56.04 Then we argued back and forth. 00:16:56.07\00:16:57.25 I didn't argued, they argued back and forth 00:16:57.28\00:16:58.72 for about 45 minutes. 00:16:58.75\00:17:00.37 Finally the Pastor pulls out his cell phone 00:17:00.40\00:17:03.06 called the warden, the warden was on vacation. 00:17:03.09\00:17:06.21 Calls the warden on vacation 00:17:06.24\00:17:07.33 and he says we have a problem 00:17:07.36\00:17:08.39 and explains the issue 00:17:08.42\00:17:10.32 and the pastor then comes back to the captain of the guard 00:17:10.35\00:17:13.47 and said the warden wants to talk to you 00:17:13.50\00:17:14.94 and hands him the phone. 00:17:14.97\00:17:16.29 And they go in the back room 00:17:16.32\00:17:17.35 and the door is partially open I can hear lots of yelling. 00:17:17.38\00:17:21.11 And then a long pause 00:17:21.14\00:17:22.24 and I'm sure there was a yelling on the other end of the phone 00:17:22.27\00:17:25.41 and finally the guard comes in 00:17:25.44\00:17:27.14 he hands the phone back to the pastor 00:17:27.17\00:17:28.49 and he said just wait. 00:17:28.52\00:17:30.79 And they took us inside 00:17:30.82\00:17:33.02 and they took us to the assistant warden's office 00:17:33.05\00:17:35.75 and he said you can film but only in the cell. 00:17:35.78\00:17:40.44 You cannot film anything outside the cell. 00:17:40.47\00:17:44.17 Your camera can only be running 00:17:44.20\00:17:45.24 when you are inside this whole cell. 00:17:45.27\00:17:46.63 And I said, oh, yeah. 00:17:46.66\00:17:47.85 I had the ideas of the camera going down the hallway 00:17:47.88\00:17:50.44 and getting these great things and stuff. 00:17:50.47\00:17:53.23 And so I had to film 00:17:53.26\00:17:54.64 the whole complete story inside the cell 00:17:54.67\00:17:57.31 what we did we made it work. 00:17:57.34\00:17:58.98 It was funny, it was fun to do. 00:17:59.01\00:18:01.14 Now, we are gonna look at that video in a few minutes 00:18:01.17\00:18:03.02 but how did that story effect you? 00:18:03.05\00:18:07.32 That the story that you witnessed there? 00:18:07.35\00:18:09.55 It was-- I basically spent a church service 00:18:09.58\00:18:12.57 with seven Adventist who are in prison 00:18:12.60\00:18:16.23 inside the cell and worship with them 00:18:16.26\00:18:19.56 and at the end of a church service 00:18:19.59\00:18:20.91 they thanked me for coming 00:18:20.94\00:18:22.07 and they were tear shed 00:18:22.10\00:18:23.13 and they said please 00:18:23.16\00:18:24.86 let our brothers and sisters around the world know about us 00:18:24.89\00:18:28.66 and that we want their prayer, 00:18:28.69\00:18:30.75 we need their prayers and their support. 00:18:30.78\00:18:32.57 Now support not financially 00:18:32.60\00:18:33.94 but just we want their prayer 00:18:33.97\00:18:35.08 and what they are thinking about us. 00:18:35.11\00:18:36.84 So-- sorry go ahead. 00:18:36.87\00:18:38.37 And I said-- and that was for me 00:18:38.40\00:18:40.94 was the driving factor behind producing this videos 00:18:40.97\00:18:43.20 as I wanted to do them 00:18:43.23\00:18:44.36 just justice and to share their story. 00:18:44.39\00:18:46.31 So when we see these stories 00:18:46.34\00:18:48.16 we don't have the sweating which goes behind them. 00:18:48.19\00:18:51.72 No, and the prayers 00:18:51.75\00:18:53.06 I mean I was praying the whole time. 00:18:53.09\00:18:54.77 Dear God, I need to be able 00:18:54.80\00:18:56.05 to tell their story properly and it worked out. 00:18:56.08\00:18:58.91 Now the Adventist Mission DVD 00:18:58.94\00:19:00.52 that goes out to Adventist churches 00:19:00.55\00:19:02.82 that contains that people 00:19:02.85\00:19:04.20 who may want to watch 00:19:04.23\00:19:05.26 just on their computers at home, 00:19:05.29\00:19:06.64 how do they do that? 00:19:06.67\00:19:07.70 It's easy to do this several ways. 00:19:07.73\00:19:09.14 You can YouTube, 00:19:09.17\00:19:11.65 if you can go Youtube.com/adventistmission 00:19:11.68\00:19:14.55 we have a channel 00:19:14.58\00:19:15.68 with the majority of our videos up there 00:19:39.92\00:19:41.30 Thank you, Gary. 00:19:41.33\00:19:43.32 We love to share the inspiration of mission 00:19:43.35\00:19:45.66 and there is nothing like the medium of DVD, video 00:19:45.69\00:19:50.00 to take you right there where the action is 00:19:50.03\00:19:52.53 and thank you for your prayers 00:19:52.56\00:19:54.19 and support for global mission around the world 00:19:54.22\00:19:57.27 but please pray for our team 00:19:57.30\00:19:58.81 like Dan going to some very inhospitable places at time. 00:19:58.84\00:20:03.28 Well, let's go to Moldova 00:20:03.31\00:20:05.06 and let's journey there and let's go behind the bars 00:20:05.09\00:20:08.49 and see what we can see. 00:20:08.52\00:20:09.55 This is a common sight around the world, 00:20:32.87\00:20:35.57 a group of Adventist believers singing 00:20:35.60\00:20:37.45 and sharing their faith, 00:20:37.48\00:20:39.50 celebrating the new lives 00:20:39.53\00:20:40.84 that they have been given by our loving Savior. 00:20:40.87\00:20:43.48 But this group is unlike any other in the church. 00:20:43.51\00:20:46.61 These believers will never set foot 00:20:46.64\00:20:48.46 outside the small room that they worship in. 00:20:48.49\00:20:51.39 They are to spend the rest of their lives here, 00:20:51.42\00:20:54.08 they have been forgiven by God, 00:20:54.11\00:20:56.50 but society requires them to spend 00:20:56.53\00:20:58.45 the rest of their lives behind bars. 00:20:58.48\00:21:01.30 Balloons and children, 00:21:04.51\00:21:06.56 smiling faces, images of life 00:21:06.59\00:21:09.92 something that we sometimes take for granted. 00:21:09.95\00:21:12.85 The country of Moldova is a picturesque landscape 00:21:12.88\00:21:16.15 nestled between the mountains 00:21:16.18\00:21:17.33 of Southern Ukraine and Northern Romania. 00:21:17.36\00:21:20.57 This former Soviet Republic 00:21:20.60\00:21:22.63 has undergone a drastic transformation 00:21:22.66\00:21:24.90 over the past 20 years. 00:21:24.93\00:21:27.00 Yet despite all the changes, 00:21:27.03\00:21:29.26 Moldova is still considered 00:21:29.29\00:21:30.95 one of the poorest countries in Europe. 00:21:30.98\00:21:33.78 People here work hard, 00:21:33.81\00:21:34.85 most of them in agriculture or government 00:21:34.88\00:21:37.56 and they enjoy spending time with their families. 00:21:37.59\00:21:40.68 You will often see young children 00:21:40.71\00:21:42.44 playing in the parks 00:21:42.47\00:21:43.50 that are common place in the capital Chisinau. 00:21:43.53\00:21:46.89 Majority of the people here 00:21:46.92\00:21:48.02 belong to the Russian Orthodox Church, 00:21:48.05\00:21:50.64 but for many religion is something 00:21:50.67\00:21:52.69 that is traditional not experienced. 00:21:52.72\00:21:55.86 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:21:55.89\00:21:57.26 has more than 11,000 members, in Moldova 00:21:57.29\00:22:00.65 and a population ratio of one Adventist 00:22:00.68\00:22:02.95 for every 390 people, 00:22:02.98\00:22:05.67 one of the best in the entire Euro-Asia Division. 00:22:05.70\00:22:08.90 Despite this growth, there are still many challenges. 00:22:08.93\00:22:13.10 Seventh-day Adventists in Moldova 00:22:13.13\00:22:14.83 have found ways to not only spread the gospel, 00:22:14.86\00:22:17.70 but to make a difference in their communities. 00:22:17.73\00:22:20.48 One of these is Pavel Girleanu, an Adventist pastor. 00:22:20.51\00:22:24.96 Along with three churches that he pastors, 00:22:24.99\00:22:26.85 Pavel works in seven prisons in Moldova. 00:22:26.88\00:22:29.93 He does everything from arranging 00:22:29.96\00:22:31.58 and holding church services 00:22:31.61\00:22:33.37 in small, cramped cells, 00:22:33.40\00:22:35.60 to arranging family days at prisons 00:22:35.63\00:22:37.72 and detention centers. 00:22:37.75\00:22:39.54 Pavel is making a difference 00:22:39.57\00:22:41.32 in the lives of people the society wants to forget. 00:22:41.35\00:22:45.66 And smiles on the faces of women 00:22:45.69\00:22:47.57 seeing their children for the first time in months 00:22:47.60\00:22:50.37 shows how much they appreciate all that Pavel 00:22:50.40\00:22:52.96 and his helpers are doing. 00:22:52.99\00:22:55.07 The Adventist Development and Relief Agency 00:22:55.10\00:22:57.09 also helps by providing volunteers, 00:22:57.12\00:22:59.97 transportation for family members, 00:23:00.00\00:23:01.79 and toiletry kits for the prisoners. 00:23:01.82\00:23:04.34 Family members breakdown in tears 00:23:04.37\00:23:06.48 as the emotions of months of separation 00:23:06.51\00:23:08.67 come to the surface. 00:23:08.70\00:23:10.60 Although it's a simple act of kindness, 00:23:10.63\00:23:13.12 it's a perfect example of how the church can provide 00:23:13.15\00:23:15.84 relief to those who need. 00:23:15.87\00:23:18.07 Just as Christ did, 00:23:18.10\00:23:19.58 helped people without judging a person for their sins, 00:23:19.61\00:23:23.09 its an other way we can represent Christ here on earth. 00:23:23.12\00:23:28.67 There is one group that Pavel has taken a special interest in, 00:23:28.70\00:23:32.45 a group most people would avoid 00:23:32.48\00:23:34.84 but when that Pavel has taken as his own. 00:23:34.87\00:23:38.10 Once inside this small cell that will serves as his chapel, 00:23:38.13\00:23:41.68 Pavel leads a small group of prisoners in prayer 00:23:41.71\00:23:44.65 and then reads from the Bible. 00:23:44.68\00:23:46.65 Sabbath school turns into a lively discussion, 00:23:46.68\00:23:49.62 as this is the first time the group 00:23:49.65\00:23:51.48 has been able to meet in nearly six months. 00:23:51.51\00:23:55.09 Outside the window of the cell, 00:23:55.12\00:23:56.82 a courtyard gives glimpses of the lonely life 00:23:56.85\00:23:59.71 these prisoners lead. 00:23:59.74\00:24:01.55 All of them will spend the rest of their lives 00:24:01.58\00:24:03.52 in desolation and despair. 00:24:03.55\00:24:05.72 That is, unless they get the chance to talk to Valentin. 00:24:05.75\00:24:09.44 He sits at the back of the group of prisoners 00:24:09.47\00:24:11.57 as they start their church service. 00:24:11.60\00:24:13.88 He has been labeled as a member of the lowest level 00:24:13.91\00:24:16.22 of the prison society 00:24:16.25\00:24:18.15 because he was willing to give a hand 00:24:18.18\00:24:19.96 of Christian love to a fellow prisoner 00:24:19.99\00:24:22.40 Valentin has been labeled an outcast 00:24:22.43\00:24:24.63 by his fellow prisoners. 00:24:24.66\00:24:26.44 He's not allowed to touch 00:24:26.47\00:24:27.89 or even talk to his fellow believers 00:24:27.92\00:24:30.29 who fear that they will be ostracized as well. 00:24:30.32\00:24:33.29 But the men in this cell 00:24:33.32\00:24:35.18 all owe Valentin a debt of gratitude, 00:24:35.21\00:24:38.09 for he was the one 00:24:38.12\00:24:39.22 that brought each of them into the Church. 00:24:39.25\00:24:42.18 Valentin knows that God 00:24:42.21\00:24:44.04 put him in this position for a reason. 00:24:44.07\00:24:47.61 [speaking in foreign language] 00:24:47.64\00:24:50.38 The word of God says that we should be witnesses, 00:24:50.41\00:24:52.61 His witnesses. 00:24:52.64\00:24:54.41 The prisoners are thankful for the new lives 00:24:54.44\00:24:56.57 that they have been given by Christ. 00:24:56.60\00:24:58.89 Despite all that they've done these men now lead new lives. 00:24:58.92\00:25:03.67 [speaking in foreign language] 00:25:03.70\00:25:08.54 And He is ready to accept them 00:25:08.57\00:25:09.78 with all their sins with all their deed 00:25:09.81\00:25:12.26 what they did up to now 00:25:12.29\00:25:13.78 and to give them salvation and to forgive them. 00:25:13.81\00:25:17.19 The church service ends with Pavel's closing prayer, 00:25:17.22\00:25:20.13 and the prisoners prepare to return to their cells. 00:25:20.16\00:25:23.01 For them the Sabbath service is over, 00:25:23.04\00:25:25.54 but they wish to give one last message 00:25:25.57\00:25:27.54 to their fellow Adventists around the world. 00:25:27.57\00:25:30.95 [speaking in foreign language] 00:25:30.98\00:25:36.31 And I would like to ask everybody 00:25:36.34\00:25:38.17 who will see these things-- 00:25:38.20\00:25:41.06 [speaking in foreign language] 00:25:41.09\00:25:44.23 To pray about our small group, 00:25:44.26\00:25:46.67 [speaking in foreign language] 00:25:46.70\00:25:49.38 Who are just on the beginning its way to Christ. 00:25:49.41\00:25:54.89 [speaking in foreign language] 00:25:54.92\00:25:58.59 And to remember about us in prayers. 00:25:58.62\00:26:03.72 Thank you
