The south Pacific
is a very diverse area
00:00:07.44\00:00:10.82
ranging from islands such
as Fiji, where I was born,
00:00:10.85\00:00:14.21
through the
highlands of Papua New Guinea,
00:00:14.24\00:00:16.64
to the urban areas of Downtown
Sydney and Downtown Auckland.
00:00:16.67\00:00:20.35
All our
tremendous mission fields.
00:00:20.38\00:00:22.96
And on today's
program we will be looking
00:00:22.99\00:00:25.16
at these challenging areas.
00:00:25.19\00:00:26.86
My name is Gary Krause
00:00:26.89\00:00:28.43
and welcome to
Global Mission Snapshots.
00:00:28.46\00:00:30.95
Just before He
went up to heaven,
00:00:35.26\00:00:37.85
Jesus gave us a command.
00:00:37.88\00:00:40.79
He gave us a mission.
00:00:40.82\00:00:43.51
Jesus said, go, go
unto all the world,
00:00:43.54\00:00:48.36
telling them of His love.
00:00:48.39\00:00:50.91
This is our mission.
00:00:50.94\00:00:52.91
This is our "Global Mission."
00:00:52.94\00:00:55.29
Hello and welcome to
global mission snapshots.
00:01:00.47\00:01:03.16
On today's program
buckle your seat belts
00:01:03.19\00:01:05.82
as we go flying
on a mission plane
00:01:05.85\00:01:08.29
in Papua New Guinea.
00:01:08.32\00:01:10.02
This plane has
given wings to mission.
00:01:10.05\00:01:12.53
Thanks to the support
of people around the world
00:01:12.56\00:01:15.05
who gave generously
the mission offerings.
00:01:15.08\00:01:17.73
We will also talk to Don Noble
00:01:17.76\00:01:19.19
from Maranatha
Volunteers International,
00:01:19.22\00:01:21.91
a vital partner in
Global mission work
00:01:21.94\00:01:24.58
around the world.
00:01:24.61\00:01:25.88
Among many other things
00:01:25.91\00:01:27.07
Maranatha helps
local congregations
00:01:27.10\00:01:29.76
build their own
places of worship,
00:01:29.79\00:01:32.22
often in just one day.
00:01:32.25\00:01:34.34
We will also talk to
video producer, Dan Weber
00:01:34.37\00:01:36.97
to get some stories from
behind his mission camera
00:01:37.00\00:01:41.02
and we will visit a
church plant in Sydney,
00:01:41.05\00:01:43.30
Australia's largest city
but first up, flying for God.
00:01:43.33\00:01:48.30
When the 13th Sabbath offering
00:01:57.19\00:01:58.70
last came to the
south pacific division
00:01:58.73\00:02:01.17
it was 2006 and a
portion of your offerings
00:02:01.20\00:02:04.19
helped by a plane
for Papua New Guinea.
00:02:04.22\00:02:06.81
At that time when the offering
was taken it set a record
00:02:06.84\00:02:10.07
for the largest 13th
Sabbath offering in the history
00:02:10.10\00:02:12.74
of the
Seventh-day Adventist church.
00:02:12.77\00:02:14.90
Your faithful
prayers and financial support
00:02:14.93\00:02:17.24
helped to purchase
a remarkable airplane,
00:02:17.27\00:02:19.61
one that has an even more
remarkable mission reaching out
00:02:19.64\00:02:23.06
to the hard to reach
areas of Papua New Guinea.
00:02:23.09\00:02:26.30
Many Seventh-day Adventists
learned about Papua New Guinea
00:02:30.03\00:02:32.84
when Eric Were
produced his film,
00:02:32.87\00:02:35.05
"The cry of New Guinea"
00:02:35.08\00:02:37.04
the film showed church members
00:02:37.07\00:02:38.81
all over the world the
mission work being done there.
00:02:38.84\00:02:42.06
Eric Were spent 40 days
following missionary Len Barnard
00:02:42.09\00:02:45.78
up rough mountain trails,
through hot sticky jungles,
00:02:45.81\00:02:49.20
over rushing rivers,
and finally to the highlands
00:02:49.23\00:02:52.10
where they met the
cannibals of Karimui.
00:02:52.13\00:02:55.46
There they cared
for people's wounds,
00:02:55.49\00:02:57.44
helped heal the sick
and most importantly,
00:02:57.47\00:03:00.25
taught them about Jesus.
00:03:00.28\00:03:02.16
Today, the fruits of this early
work can be seen in the lives
00:03:02.19\00:03:05.41
of the more than
235,000 Adventists
00:03:05.44\00:03:09.34
currently living
in Papua New Guinea.
00:03:09.37\00:03:11.22
Today that same trip taken
by the pioneer missionaries
00:03:13.67\00:03:17.24
can be
accomplished in about 30 minutes
00:03:17.27\00:03:19.60
in the new mission plane
00:03:19.63\00:03:20.73
that was purchased
with your offerings.
00:03:20.76\00:03:23.27
The plane is based in Goroka
00:03:23.30\00:03:25.23
at the Adventist
Aviation Service hanger.
00:03:25.26\00:03:28.13
The planes pilot, Roger Millist,
is on his second tour of duty
00:03:28.16\00:03:31.59
in Papua New
Guinea as a mission pilot.
00:03:31.62\00:03:34.16
He returned to Goroka in 2005
00:03:34.19\00:03:36.72
and has turned the
mission flight service
00:03:36.75\00:03:38.44
into a top-notch operation.
00:03:38.47\00:03:40.87
Roger and the plane
ferry local missionaries
00:03:40.90\00:03:43.24
who live and work
among the small villages
00:03:43.27\00:03:45.51
that dot the
mountains around Goroka.
00:03:45.54\00:03:48.19
These missionaries commit at
least one year of their lives
00:03:48.22\00:03:51.18
to tell the story of Jesus
and His love and forgiveness
00:03:51.21\00:03:54.67
as they leave to
move on to a new village
00:03:54.70\00:03:57.29
tears are shared with the people
who have come to love them.
00:03:57.32\00:04:00.99
The plane is also
used to transport teachers,
00:04:01.02\00:04:03.72
church leaders,
and health workers
00:04:03.75\00:04:05.44
to the small villages
and communities scattered
00:04:05.47\00:04:07.87
throughout the
islands of Papua New Guinea.
00:04:07.90\00:04:10.38
The mission plane
excels at getting around
00:04:10.41\00:04:12.41
to these small
mountain villages.
00:04:12.44\00:04:14.95
Not many planes can land
or take off from airstrips
00:04:14.98\00:04:17.80
that are only several
hundred meters in length.
00:04:17.83\00:04:20.59
Adding the fact that
some of the airstrips
00:04:20.62\00:04:22.38
have close to a
14-degree incline
00:04:22.41\00:04:24.88
and it's easy to
see why not everyone
00:04:24.91\00:04:26.77
is skilled enough to do
this dangerous type of work.
00:04:26.80\00:04:30.21
Pastor Millist and the rest
of the Adventist aviation staff
00:04:30.24\00:04:33.19
are truly
dedicated to their mission.
00:04:33.22\00:04:36.22
The mission plane, a PAC XL,
00:04:39.10\00:04:41.36
can haul large amounts of cargo,
00:04:41.39\00:04:43.36
as well as up to
12 people at a time.
00:04:43.39\00:04:46.14
The plane often carries roofing
00:04:46.17\00:04:47.80
for new churches
being built in the jungle,
00:04:47.83\00:04:50.07
as well as local produce
00:04:50.10\00:04:51.53
that will be taken back
to larger cities and sold
00:04:51.56\00:04:54.13
so that people of these remote
villages can earn a living.
00:04:54.16\00:04:57.84
By carrying this
cargo for a small fee,
00:04:57.87\00:05:00.43
the Adventist Aviation Service
00:05:00.46\00:05:02.14
can help to cover the
cost of moving missionaries
00:05:02.17\00:05:04.52
and church materials around
the islands of Papua New Guinea.
00:05:04.55\00:05:09.23
Through its unique ministry
00:05:09.26\00:05:10.82
to the people
of Papua New Guinea
00:05:10.85\00:05:12.81
Adventist Aviation
truly is fulfilling the call
00:05:12.84\00:05:16.00
to take the gospel and
to the ends of the earth.
00:05:16.03\00:05:19.36
It means a great deal
to us to have been able
00:05:19.39\00:05:21.95
to get into this new
turbine-powered aircraft.
00:05:21.98\00:05:25.11
It has significantly
raised our levels of safety
00:05:25.14\00:05:30.02
and performance for pilots
as well as for passengers.
00:05:30.05\00:05:33.17
And it's great to know
00:05:33.20\00:05:35.08
almost daily I get
e-mails from people saying,
00:05:35.11\00:05:38.65
you're in our prayers every day.
00:05:38.68\00:05:40.05
We work in a
very challenging area
00:05:40.08\00:05:43.06
and to know that
people around the world
00:05:43.09\00:05:45.01
church members around the world,
00:05:45.04\00:05:47.10
as well as church members
00:05:47.13\00:05:48.78
here in the
South Pacific Division,
00:05:48.81\00:05:50.68
have support as
well as church members
00:05:50.71\00:05:52.97
here in Papua New Guinea,
00:05:53.00\00:05:54.70
have all banded
together with Adventist Aviation
00:05:54.73\00:05:57.54
with the resources we had
that means a great deal to us,
00:05:57.57\00:06:01.78
we know we're not
alone in what we're doing.
00:06:01.81\00:06:04.13
Thank you for your
support of the mission offering,
00:06:06.29\00:06:09.53
your prayers and
financial support
00:06:09.56\00:06:11.46
have helped to
reach God's children
00:06:11.49\00:06:14.25
even on to the
ends of the earth,
00:06:14.28\00:06:16.35
even those at the
end of grass runway
00:06:16.38\00:06:18.91
on a mountain in
Papua New Guinea.
00:06:18.94\00:06:21.59
Maranatha
Volunteers International
00:06:25.35\00:06:27.64
is a Seventh-day
Adventist lay organization
00:06:27.67\00:06:30.70
that over the years has involved
thousands of people in Mission
00:06:30.73\00:06:35.65
giving them a
first hand fresh taste
00:06:35.68\00:06:38.55
of what it's like to be involved
00:06:38.58\00:06:39.92
and I'm delighted to welcome
Don Noble to our program.
00:06:39.95\00:06:43.77
Don, the president of Maranatha.
00:06:43.80\00:06:47.80
The importance of involvement
00:06:47.83\00:06:49.30
to actually go
on a mission trip,
00:06:49.33\00:06:51.58
how important is
that in the life of people
00:06:51.61\00:06:53.97
who you have seen
serving with Maranatha.
00:06:54.00\00:06:56.73
Well, first hand you know,
if a person actually goes out
00:06:56.76\00:06:59.73
and sees things in
the area of mission,
00:06:59.76\00:07:03.29
their lives are changed,
they cannot be the same.
00:07:03.32\00:07:05.70
You can watch all
the pictures you want,
00:07:05.73\00:07:08.95
videos, even this program
00:07:08.98\00:07:11.57
but going out
there and personally
00:07:11.60\00:07:14.28
interacting with the
people looking into their eyes
00:07:14.31\00:07:17.38
feeling how they live,
00:07:17.41\00:07:18.95
sensing their
commitment to Jesus Christ
00:07:18.98\00:07:23.05
it's powerful and life changing.
00:07:23.08\00:07:26.37
I regularly get people
coming up to me and say
00:07:26.40\00:07:29.39
why don't you just collect
the money from the people
00:07:29.42\00:07:33.81
that we are gonna
go and go out there
00:07:33.84\00:07:36.00
and build whatever
you are going to build.
00:07:36.03\00:07:38.10
I say we have a
couple of problem with that.
00:07:38.13\00:07:39.83
Number one you
are going to give it.
00:07:39.86\00:07:42.04
You are going to keep the money
00:07:42.07\00:07:43.82
and the second one
00:07:43.85\00:07:45.05
is it's not just
about the buildings,
00:07:45.08\00:07:48.68
it's about the people
00:07:48.71\00:07:50.43
and it's not
just about the people
00:07:50.46\00:07:52.05
for which you are
building the buildings.
00:07:52.08\00:07:53.38
It's also about
you as an individual
00:07:53.41\00:07:57.08
going out
primarily North America
00:07:57.11\00:07:59.83
but not exclusively and seeing
00:07:59.86\00:08:02.28
what God is
doing having an impact
00:08:02.31\00:08:04.37
and you come back
it riches your life,
00:08:04.40\00:08:07.43
it changes your local church.
00:08:07.46\00:08:09.38
It changes your commitment,
changes your giving patterns,
00:08:09.41\00:08:15.01
when you change the
life and you get the heart.
00:08:15.04\00:08:17.42
You got the individual
00:08:17.45\00:08:18.66
and then God can
do anything with you.
00:08:18.69\00:08:22.10
Now, what do the
youngest volunteers
00:08:22.13\00:08:23.88
that you have sometimes?
00:08:23.91\00:08:25.39
Oh, babies in arms.
00:08:25.42\00:08:28.45
You know, we
have actually started
00:08:28.48\00:08:29.74
a very very
surprisingly successful project
00:08:29.77\00:08:33.16
called family project.
00:08:33.19\00:08:34.72
We now have two or
three of them in a year
00:08:34.75\00:08:36.34
because we can't
keep up, we had a--
00:08:36.37\00:08:38.49
we started with a
Christmas family project,
00:08:38.52\00:08:40.35
thinking where
there is a few people
00:08:40.38\00:08:41.98
that may not want
to just give gifts,
00:08:42.01\00:08:44.60
may be they want to go and
give a gift to someone else
00:08:44.63\00:08:46.74
and do it as a family.
00:08:46.77\00:08:48.48
Boy that's
popular, really popular.
00:08:48.51\00:08:50.71
We had to add another one
in the summer and another one
00:08:50.74\00:08:54.08
and so family is
getting involved and saying
00:08:54.11\00:08:56.62
let's teach our
children from a young age.
00:08:56.65\00:08:59.82
To be involved in mission so,
00:08:59.85\00:09:02.39
they take their
young kids and though
00:09:02.42\00:09:03.83
we provide programming for
them it's a little bit different
00:09:03.86\00:09:07.28
and they don't necessarily
have to go out and lay break,
00:09:07.31\00:09:10.21
but they start thinking mission
00:09:10.24\00:09:12.46
how can I help
somebody else from a young age.
00:09:12.49\00:09:15.11
And the families want
that type of education
00:09:15.14\00:09:18.64
to be going into
their-- into their kids,
00:09:18.67\00:09:20.60
so it's popular.
00:09:20.63\00:09:21.68
Yeah. Really popular.
00:09:21.71\00:09:22.75
And you get some older
people to go on these trips?
00:09:22.78\00:09:25.23
Oh, sure, oh, yeah, families
00:09:25.26\00:09:28.10
you know, everybody
defines a family different,
00:09:28.13\00:09:30.07
you know, might be the
perfect husband, wife two kids
00:09:30.10\00:09:34.01
but it can also be a grandfather
and a grandson it's--
00:09:34.04\00:09:38.78
it can be an
aunty and the niece.
00:09:38.81\00:09:41.47
It can be a lot
of different things
00:09:41.50\00:09:43.73
and they decide
so they come usually
00:09:43.76\00:09:46.40
some kind of a
relation between them.
00:09:46.43\00:09:50.60
Now, Don you have so many things
00:09:50.63\00:09:52.37
going on with Maranatha
00:09:52.40\00:09:53.52
but I want to focus on a project
called the one day school.
00:09:53.55\00:09:58.83
But originally this came out
of the one day church program
00:09:58.86\00:10:01.81
just give us a little
bit of background to that.
00:10:01.84\00:10:03.56
Yes, it did, of course
the one day church program
00:10:03.59\00:10:05.64
started incorporation
with the Adventist church,
00:10:05.67\00:10:08.86
ASI Maranatha responding
to the huge number of need
00:10:08.89\00:10:13.34
around the world for churches
00:10:13.37\00:10:15.03
and as you start to build these
you will say isn't it possible
00:10:15.06\00:10:18.18
or wouldn't it be
useful to also provide schools
00:10:18.21\00:10:21.81
because the
request started coming soon
00:10:21.84\00:10:23.45
as the one day
church started going up
00:10:23.48\00:10:25.64
and what we have found
00:10:25.67\00:10:27.26
since the last
general conference in Atlanta
00:10:27.29\00:10:30.97
the requests
have been overwhelming
00:10:31.00\00:10:33.88
more for schools
than for churches.
00:10:33.91\00:10:37.07
We have requests
now pretty verifiable
00:10:37.10\00:10:40.32
of about 80,000 one
day school classrooms.
00:10:40.35\00:10:44.90
Wow!
00:10:44.93\00:10:45.96
And it's phenomenal because
as many places in the world
00:10:45.99\00:10:48.99
where churches and traditional
evangelism doesn't work
00:10:49.02\00:10:52.26
but they can put in a school
00:10:52.29\00:10:54.38
and they can attract
the children, educate them
00:10:54.41\00:10:58.31
and that is
their form of outreach.
00:10:58.34\00:11:00.97
So it's really powerful.
00:11:01.00\00:11:03.55
That's a nice looking school.
00:11:03.58\00:11:05.19
Yes, that's the school
comes complete the church,
00:11:05.22\00:11:10.02
we let them finish it.
00:11:10.05\00:11:11.08
Now this is also the big
educational evangelism centre
00:11:11.11\00:11:15.77
we do a few of those,
that's not the one day program.
00:11:15.80\00:11:19.26
But the one day
buildings come complete with,
00:11:19.29\00:11:22.78
you know, four
walls, black board,
00:11:22.81\00:11:25.77
desks everything so the
next day you can start school.
00:11:25.80\00:11:30.49
And most of the requests
are coming are for campuses.
00:11:30.52\00:11:34.44
That's all right.
00:11:34.47\00:11:35.50
Oh, yeah, we
thought it would be oh, yes,
00:11:35.53\00:11:37.77
classroom here and
classroom there but--
00:11:37.80\00:11:41.07
I give you
example Zimbabwe it's a--
00:11:41.10\00:11:44.01
they not only
want a primary school
00:11:44.04\00:11:47.65
or a secondary school,
they got big pieces of property
00:11:47.68\00:11:50.65
that the
government has given to them
00:11:50.68\00:11:52.72
and they want their
request for one school
00:11:52.75\00:11:56.48
is may be 15 primary classrooms
00:11:56.51\00:11:59.41
and 15 or 18
secondary classrooms,
00:11:59.44\00:12:02.96
that's one school to them.
00:12:02.99\00:12:04.02
Yeah.
00:12:04.05\00:12:05.08
And they have
dozens in these countries
00:12:05.11\00:12:08.97
and think of the
impact on children,
00:12:09.00\00:12:12.32
the communities and
the church in the long run
00:12:12.35\00:12:15.03
from these buildings.
00:12:15.06\00:12:16.40
In Haiti, we've got a
project directly with Adra
00:12:16.43\00:12:20.68
for a 100 classrooms now
there after the earthquake
00:12:20.71\00:12:23.81
what an impact
it's-- it's powerful.
00:12:23.84\00:12:26.40
Education, you
know, is one of the--
00:12:26.43\00:12:29.12
one of the great things
00:12:29.15\00:12:30.18
in the Seventh-day Adventist
church train up a child.
00:12:30.21\00:12:33.31
Teach him about Jesus
from the time they are young
00:12:33.34\00:12:36.12
and see what
happens in their life.
00:12:36.15\00:12:37.58
Oh, yeah. The
lives of their family.
00:12:37.61\00:12:39.05
Oh, yeah.
00:12:39.08\00:12:40.11
It is the future I think.
00:12:40.14\00:12:42.28
How many schools
have you put up so far?
00:12:42.31\00:12:45.18
Oh, just getting started
on schools say about 300.
00:12:45.21\00:12:48.50
Wow, fantastic.
00:12:48.53\00:12:49.79
It sounds wow, but
-- No, no, not at all.
00:12:49.82\00:12:51.87
Unless you have to
drive to each one of them.
00:12:51.90\00:12:53.54
That's right.
00:12:53.57\00:12:54.70
Then it becomes a big deal.
00:12:54.73\00:12:55.80
But there are starting to grow,
00:12:55.83\00:12:57.53
we've built one down in Honduras
00:12:57.56\00:12:59.67
with the big
educational evangelism centre
00:12:59.70\00:13:01.62
and 30 sum of the
one day classroom.
00:13:01.65\00:13:04.07
A school for 1,400 students.
00:13:04.10\00:13:05.89
Fantastic. And
it goes up quickly.
00:13:05.92\00:13:08.07
Don, thanks for joining us
today and sharing with us--
00:13:08.10\00:13:11.12
this is an exciting project
touching thousands of lives
00:13:11.15\00:13:14.01
and just
growing, growing, growing.
00:13:14.04\00:13:16.15
If you would like to
be involved in Maranatha
00:13:16.18\00:13:18.10
just go to Maranatha.org
and there you can find out
00:13:18.13\00:13:21.97
all the
information you need to know
00:13:22.00\00:13:23.99
about volunteering and
building schools and churches.
00:13:24.02\00:13:27.96
In this segment, we are going
to travel to the South Pacific.
00:14:05.85\00:14:09.62
A region that ranges
from the small pacific islands
00:14:09.65\00:14:14.66
through to the large cities
of Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland.
00:14:14.69\00:14:18.98
Dan Weber has joined me.
00:14:19.01\00:14:20.30
Dan is the video
producer for Adventist mission
00:14:20.33\00:14:23.26
and Dan it is really a diverse
place, the South Pacific.
00:14:23.29\00:14:28.25
It's a fun place to visit
00:14:28.28\00:14:29.31
but of course you're
from there so you know that.
00:14:29.34\00:14:30.93
I'm biased, of course. Yeah.
00:14:30.96\00:14:32.68
And you went there,
00:14:32.71\00:14:34.34
I guess within
the last year or two.
00:14:34.37\00:14:36.80
A couple of years ago
00:14:36.83\00:14:37.90
and I'm actually going there
again in a couple of months.
00:14:37.93\00:14:39.62
And you went up to the
highlands of Papua New Guinea.
00:14:39.65\00:14:42.11
Yeah.
00:14:42.14\00:14:43.17
And so you experience
00:14:43.20\00:14:44.34
what it was like to
ride in the mission plane
00:14:44.37\00:14:46.05
that we just saw
a few minutes ago.
00:14:46.08\00:14:48.03
Yeah, if you
are in a fear flying
00:14:48.06\00:14:49.26
I wouldn't suggest that trip.
00:14:49.29\00:14:50.83
Well, I understand that flying
00:14:50.86\00:14:52.63
in the highlands
of Papua New Guinea
00:14:52.66\00:14:54.36
is some of the most
dangerous flying you could do.
00:14:54.39\00:14:56.30
It is and as we saw
in the video earlier
00:14:56.33\00:14:59.72
you are landing on
little grass strips
00:14:59.75\00:15:02.65
you know, basically
on the side of a mountain
00:15:02.68\00:15:04.53
and its not flat and sometimes
you are landing up hill,
00:15:04.56\00:15:07.80
sometimes you are landing
downhill based on the wind
00:15:07.83\00:15:09.97
and this plane is pretty amazing
00:15:10.00\00:15:12.39
it can land and take off
from very short distances.
00:15:12.42\00:15:15.93
And of course it saves
days and days of trekking
00:15:15.96\00:15:19.51
through the
trails to these villages.
00:15:19.54\00:15:22.04
The first Adventist missionaries
that really went there
00:15:22.07\00:15:26.67
and they would talk about
00:15:26.70\00:15:28.04
how they would have
to trek for 15 to 20 days
00:15:28.07\00:15:30.86
to get from one
village to another,
00:15:30.89\00:15:32.63
down through the valleys
and the jungles and back up.
00:15:32.66\00:15:35.45
And now, you could do
that flying in 15 minutes.
00:15:35.48\00:15:37.44
Yeah, amazing. Yeah.
00:15:37.47\00:15:38.84
Yeah, I can remember sitting
00:15:38.87\00:15:39.92
in the front
seat at camp meetings
00:15:39.95\00:15:41.44
listening to missionaries
telling their stories,
00:15:41.47\00:15:44.62
I remember talking to Pastor--
00:15:44.65\00:15:46.99
listening to
Pastor, Lynn Barnard
00:15:47.02\00:15:49.26
who actually trekked
in with a cinematographer,
00:15:49.29\00:15:52.37
Eric Were and actually
went to a group of cannibals
00:15:52.40\00:15:55.35
for the first time
that ever seen a concoction.
00:15:55.38\00:15:57.47
It's one of the most
amazing films you can ever see.
00:15:57.50\00:15:59.16
Yeah. Yeah.
00:15:59.19\00:16:00.22
Now, Dan what is happening,
what is the plane doing?
00:16:00.25\00:16:03.25
What is the plane
helping do in Papua New Guinea?
00:16:03.28\00:16:06.61
The plane ferries
missionaries from--
00:16:06.64\00:16:10.04
and these we think a missionary
we tend to think westerners
00:16:10.07\00:16:12.55
going over to a
different culture,
00:16:12.58\00:16:14.17
but lot of these are people
00:16:14.20\00:16:15.88
who are from
the Papua New Guinea
00:16:15.91\00:16:18.15
and so who have
dedicated their lives
00:16:18.18\00:16:19.29
to go work up in the highlands
00:16:19.32\00:16:21.88
or there are other
people from the same division,
00:16:21.91\00:16:24.15
who are going to work
00:16:24.18\00:16:25.41
and they will work for
a year or two in a village
00:16:25.44\00:16:27.90
and so the plane will fly
them out there to this village.
00:16:27.93\00:16:30.74
And I remember one
of the stops we made
00:16:30.77\00:16:32.81
where we were transferring
a pioneer and his wife
00:16:32.84\00:16:37.23
from one village to another.
00:16:37.26\00:16:40.21
The whole village came
out and there were tears
00:16:40.24\00:16:43.61
and there was crying
and there was wailing
00:16:43.64\00:16:45.98
because the village was upset
that this couple was leaving
00:16:46.01\00:16:49.86
and they understood why.
00:16:49.89\00:16:52.10
But the pioneer's wife
00:16:52.13\00:16:55.38
and she was
hugging the other woman
00:16:55.41\00:16:57.58
she didn't want to let go,
00:16:57.61\00:16:58.94
you know and so there was a real
emotional relationship there.
00:16:58.97\00:17:02.43
They really
cared about each other
00:17:02.46\00:17:04.16
and that was really nice to see,
00:17:04.19\00:17:05.53
so the plane will then
take them and their supplies
00:17:05.56\00:17:07.51
and ferry them
over to another village
00:17:07.54\00:17:09.04
and it also moves
roofing material for churches
00:17:09.07\00:17:13.70
and so that it had
these long thin sheets of tin
00:17:13.73\00:17:16.93
would load up the whole plane
00:17:16.96\00:17:18.67
and fly it up and drop it off
00:17:18.70\00:17:20.14
and then they take
it off into the bush
00:17:20.17\00:17:21.79
to go build the
church, it was great.
00:17:21.82\00:17:24.24
Now, we talk about
global mission pioneers
00:17:24.27\00:17:26.18
here all the time but just
in case some of our viewers
00:17:26.21\00:17:28.33
don't know, what is a
global mission pioneer?
00:17:28.36\00:17:30.65
A global mission
pioneer is some one
00:17:30.68\00:17:32.87
who understands the
local culture of the area
00:17:32.90\00:17:35.09
you're trying to reach
00:17:35.12\00:17:36.25
and we say the global mission
goes to the un-reached areas
00:17:36.28\00:17:39.26
where people
don't know about Jesus,
00:17:39.29\00:17:40.80
don't know about God.
00:17:40.83\00:17:42.38
But you are taking
someone who understands
00:17:42.41\00:17:43.88
the language and the culture
00:17:43.91\00:17:45.54
and putting them
into that environment
00:17:45.57\00:17:48.54
but it's not just--
not just there to preach
00:17:48.57\00:17:51.28
they are there to
become part of the community,
00:17:51.31\00:17:54.27
to make friends
with community to feel
00:17:54.30\00:17:57.29
to make the community
feel like they care about them
00:17:57.32\00:17:58.99
and that they are involved
00:17:59.02\00:18:00.11
and they are there
to care for their needs,
00:18:00.14\00:18:02.13
not just preach the
gospel and then leave.
00:18:02.16\00:18:05.19
So, the mission
plane, who fly's the plane?
00:18:05.22\00:18:09.59
Roger Millist is the CEO
00:18:09.62\00:18:11.32
of what's called
Adventist Aviation,
00:18:11.35\00:18:12.81
he is one of the pilots there
00:18:12.84\00:18:14.49
and he is a
dedicated long time missionary.
00:18:14.52\00:18:17.23
And an amazing pilot.
00:18:17.26\00:18:18.56
So he does this full time?
00:18:18.59\00:18:19.76
He does this fulltime.
00:18:19.79\00:18:20.82
Wow. Yeah.
00:18:20.85\00:18:22.15
And they also make extra income
00:18:22.18\00:18:24.87
because they are going
from one village to another
00:18:24.90\00:18:26.93
or from a village to larger city
00:18:26.96\00:18:30.04
so the people that
live in the villages
00:18:30.07\00:18:32.22
will pay a small amount of money
00:18:32.25\00:18:33.58
to have their supplies
then ferried down by plane.
00:18:33.61\00:18:36.87
And so, it's actually allow them
00:18:36.90\00:18:39.29
to make a little bit
of money to make the--
00:18:39.32\00:18:41.13
it's not really profitable
00:18:41.16\00:18:43.13
but it keeps
the business running
00:18:43.16\00:18:44.62
so that the church doesn't,
00:18:44.65\00:18:46.29
you know, have to pour
all this money into it,
00:18:46.32\00:18:48.18
that they can kind of sustain
yourself as it goes along.
00:18:48.21\00:18:51.16
The great thing about this
plane is that it was a gift
00:18:51.19\00:18:54.75
from the world
church to Adventist aviation
00:18:54.78\00:18:58.08
because the funds were provided
through the mission offering
00:18:58.11\00:19:02.46
and the 13th Sabbath offering
00:19:02.49\00:19:04.27
but also in
Australia the local churches
00:19:04.30\00:19:06.68
went around the camp
meetings over the summer time
00:19:06.71\00:19:08.36
and they raised half
of the cost of the plane.
00:19:08.39\00:19:10.78
Oh, wow.
00:19:10.81\00:19:11.84
So it was really a
gift from the world church
00:19:11.87\00:19:14.79
to Adventist
aviation, Papua New Guinea.
00:19:14.82\00:19:16.48
Great.
00:19:16.51\00:19:17.54
Now from the
highlands of Papua New Guinea
00:19:17.57\00:19:19.87
to a place like
Sydney, Australia
00:19:19.90\00:19:22.31
totally different world.
00:19:22.34\00:19:23.66
Very very secular environment.
00:19:23.69\00:19:26.83
Very hard a pioneer can go
00:19:26.86\00:19:29.50
into a village
of Papua New Guinea
00:19:29.53\00:19:31.35
and be accepted
quickly and make friends
00:19:31.38\00:19:33.19
and have success you can go
into a large city in Australia
00:19:33.22\00:19:37.69
and people there
just don't care about God.
00:19:37.72\00:19:41.00
And you can say hey, I
want to become your friend,
00:19:41.03\00:19:42.84
I want to get to know
you and I want to share
00:19:42.87\00:19:43.98
God with you and they are like,
00:19:44.01\00:19:45.68
why should I care about God?
00:19:45.71\00:19:46.74
It's a tough place it's
very hard to reach people.
00:19:46.77\00:19:48.92
Yeah, I grew up praying
00:19:48.95\00:19:50.11
for the
missionaries in the islands
00:19:50.14\00:19:52.33
but today there is far more
00:19:52.36\00:19:53.90
there are far more
Adventists in Papua New Guinea
00:19:53.93\00:19:56.34
than there in
Australia, New Zealand.
00:19:56.37\00:19:58.59
Yeah, good job.
00:19:58.62\00:19:59.68
Now, you also visited
a church plant in Sydney
00:19:59.71\00:20:02.85
what was that?
00:20:02.88\00:20:04.92
It's a Macarthur fields
00:20:04.95\00:20:07.15
which is in area
that has a rough history.
00:20:07.18\00:20:09.64
In fact, there was a riot there
00:20:09.67\00:20:11.51
probably about five years ago.
00:20:11.54\00:20:13.88
And it's economically down area
00:20:13.91\00:20:17.58
and the church
has a school there
00:20:17.61\00:20:20.26
and they decided that
they wanted to plant a church
00:20:20.29\00:20:22.55
attached to the school.
00:20:22.58\00:20:24.09
It's a great story.
00:20:24.12\00:20:25.17
Good, well, Dan
thank you so much
00:20:25.20\00:20:27.18
for joining us today,
I appreciate very much.
00:20:27.21\00:20:29.10
Thank you.
00:20:29.13\00:20:30.86
Yes, Sydney,
Auckland, New York, Chicago,
00:20:30.89\00:20:34.78
I don't care where you talk
about in terms of urban areas,
00:20:34.81\00:20:37.87
tremendous challenge.
00:20:37.90\00:20:38.97
How do we reach busy people,
00:20:39.00\00:20:42.17
people who have agendas,
00:20:42.20\00:20:44.21
people who have
heard it all before
00:20:44.24\00:20:45.67
and may not be
open to the gospel.
00:20:45.70\00:20:48.70
Well, let's
travel to Sydney now,
00:20:48.73\00:20:50.91
let's go to the
church in the fields
00:20:50.94\00:20:53.01
and let's see
how they are putting
00:20:53.04\00:20:54.66
Christ method into practice
00:20:54.69\00:20:56.80
where they are
mingling showing sympathy,
00:20:56.83\00:20:59.40
ministering to
needs, winning confidence
00:20:59.43\00:21:02.41
and slowly but surely
00:21:02.44\00:21:04.03
they are leading
people to Jesus Christ.
00:21:04.06\00:21:06.42
The city of Sydney is very much
00:21:19.81\00:21:21.51
moving into a postmodern mindset
00:21:21.54\00:21:23.41
where there is a deep union
00:21:23.44\00:21:26.59
and a deep seeking
for spiritual values.
00:21:26.62\00:21:30.27
Now the Greatest
Sydney conference
00:21:30.30\00:21:31.73
is essentially
the city of Sydney.
00:21:31.76\00:21:34.72
Has around four
million people living in Sydney
00:21:34.75\00:21:37.48
and it's the
largest city in Australia.
00:21:37.51\00:21:40.24
In Sydney we have
about 77 congregations,
00:21:40.27\00:21:43.73
it's spread through out the city
00:21:43.76\00:21:44.95
with an average attendance
00:21:44.98\00:21:46.49
of around six and
half thousand people
00:21:46.52\00:21:48.37
on from Sabbath to Sabbath.
00:21:48.40\00:21:50.77
In Greatest Sydney we have got
00:21:50.80\00:21:52.59
a some very exciting
church plants happening.
00:21:52.62\00:21:55.05
A Macarthur field is a
very socially disadvantaged area
00:22:00.25\00:22:03.87
and it's a
segment of the population
00:22:03.90\00:22:07.31
it is in
Seventh-day Adventist church
00:22:07.34\00:22:09.30
we haven't done well
at reaching in the past.
00:22:09.33\00:22:13.91
We have got pre-kindergarten
which is 4 year olds,
00:22:13.94\00:22:16.45
right up to at
the moment year 11
00:22:16.48\00:22:18.84
and there are 15,16 year old's
00:22:18.87\00:22:22.01
and then next year we
are going into year 12's
00:22:22.04\00:22:24.55
and that will complete
our package of the school.
00:22:24.58\00:22:27.43
When I came in 2004,
it was pretty evident
00:22:35.30\00:22:38.41
that's the area was in
dying need of Jesus Christ.
00:22:38.44\00:22:42.44
We had an incident that happened
in the beginning of 2005,
00:22:46.56\00:22:49.29
which is called the
Macarthur field riots
00:22:49.32\00:22:52.01
and they went
around the countryside
00:22:52.04\00:22:54.11
as one of the--
the most nastiest riots
00:22:54.14\00:22:57.77
that they've had.
00:22:57.80\00:22:59.51
And we run
stones from those riots.
00:22:59.54\00:23:03.01
I felt so impressed that we
had to move now at that time,
00:23:06.52\00:23:10.59
2005 to do
something about a church.
00:23:10.62\00:23:13.87
I went to our
conference personal
00:23:17.77\00:23:20.09
and said we got to do something
to help the families here
00:23:20.12\00:23:24.89
and if we can help them
with their spiritual needs
00:23:24.92\00:23:28.08
then the emotional
and the social needs
00:23:28.11\00:23:31.93
can also be then met in
some way, shape or form.
00:23:31.96\00:23:36.06
We believe that God
has placed the church here
00:23:58.05\00:24:00.33
to be in the
hands and faith of Jesus
00:24:00.36\00:24:02.16
to proclaim the gospel
but not just proclaim it,
00:24:02.19\00:24:05.01
to actually show it to people
as well and to live it out.
00:24:05.04\00:24:08.50
Because we are unusual
and that we have a school
00:24:08.53\00:24:12.83
and a church here
00:24:12.86\00:24:13.89
so we would like
to call ourselves
00:24:13.92\00:24:16.47
a church that's
here seven days a week.
00:24:16.50\00:24:18.56
We had been to it
seven days a week.
00:24:18.59\00:24:19.98
Predominantly
it's young students
00:24:30.93\00:24:34.28
from our school
and their families,
00:24:34.31\00:24:37.10
we have students
just coming to our school
00:24:37.13\00:24:40.00
way into the church
because it's the school.
00:24:40.03\00:24:42.04
We all get
breakfast in the morning
00:24:52.22\00:24:54.55
and then we
would all come sit down
00:24:54.58\00:24:56.13
and we do like
testimony and giving
00:24:56.16\00:24:59.25
and we don't just
sit there talk about God
00:24:59.28\00:25:01.18
and would sing songs and pray
00:25:01.21\00:25:03.29
and its just so awesome.
00:25:03.32\00:25:04.90
It has a real family atmosphere
00:25:09.53\00:25:14.08
and basically you
walking of straight in,
00:25:14.11\00:25:17.51
you are welcomed.
00:25:17.54\00:25:19.41
You don't find that
at a lot of churches.
00:25:19.44\00:25:21.73
We enjoyed the music
00:25:25.70\00:25:26.89
and it was just very
well relaxed and laid back,
00:25:26.92\00:25:30.06
it was still focused
on God and the Bible.
00:25:30.09\00:25:32.27
My passion is that our schools
00:25:40.05\00:25:43.04
around the world
will take this up,
00:25:43.07\00:25:47.01
to me church is seven days.
00:25:47.04\00:25:51.15
We are a seven day church,
00:25:51.18\00:25:53.43
we should be
operating all through the week
00:25:53.46\00:25:56.22
doing all sorts of things
00:25:56.25\00:25:57.28
and it's then my
dream coming true to say
00:25:57.31\00:26:01.17
that happening
on the grounds here.
00:26:01.20\00:26:03.17
It's wonderful to see
families worshipping together
00:26:30.12\00:26:33.44
and it's just so
important to help our children
00:26:33.47\00:26:36.20
catch a vision
for sharing Jesus.
00:26:36.23\00:26:38.75
A vision of mission to the world
00:26:38.78\00:26:41.48
and so we are
producing resources
00:26:41.51\00:26:43.20
to help share
mission with our children.
00:26:43.23\00:26:46.35
One of them is our secret,
00:26:46.38\00:26:48.22
well it's not really a secret
but sometimes it feels that way
00:26:48.25\00:26:51.57
because so many
people don't know about it.
00:26:51.60\00:26:54.03
Mission cards for
kids is a simple resource
00:26:54.06\00:26:57.38
