I'm here in the Mexico, 00:00:07.73\00:00:09.67 right on the edge of the Caribbean, 00:00:09.70\00:00:12.22 and just a few short miles across these waters 00:00:12.25\00:00:15.91 is the island nation of Cuba. 00:00:15.94\00:00:18.46 In many ways this country has been isolated 00:00:18.49\00:00:20.76 from the rest of the world for many years 00:00:20.79\00:00:23.41 and our Seventh-day Adventist family in Cuba 00:00:23.44\00:00:25.97 has been isolated from the rest of the Adventist church family. 00:00:26.00\00:00:30.98 But I want to tell you 00:00:31.01\00:00:32.04 that encouraging things that happening in Cuba 00:00:32.07\00:00:34.31 and later in this program we will be visiting Cuba 00:00:34.34\00:00:38.08 and we'll be seeing a dynamic growing Adventist church, 00:00:38.11\00:00:42.29 and we thank God 00:00:42.32\00:00:43.35 for what is happening in this country. 00:00:43.38\00:00:45.24 Just before He went up to heaven 00:00:49.66\00:00:52.09 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:52.12\00:00:55.20 He gave us a mission. 00:00:55.23\00:00:57.95 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:57.98\00:01:02.71 telling them of His love." 00:01:02.74\00:01:05.28 This is a mission. This is a Global Mission. 00:01:05.31\00:01:09.23 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:01:14.78\00:01:17.13 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:17.16\00:01:18.82 For more than 20 years now 00:01:18.85\00:01:20.57 Global Mission has been focusing on the least reached people 00:01:20.60\00:01:24.23 and areas of the world. 00:01:24.26\00:01:25.94 On today's program we feature an historic video 00:01:25.97\00:01:29.63 that features the last interview 00:01:29.66\00:01:31.48 given by Elder Neal C. Wilson, former president 00:01:31.51\00:01:35.33 of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventists. 00:01:35.36\00:01:38.79 I had the privilege 00:01:38.82\00:01:39.85 of interviewing Elder Wilson about Global Mission 00:01:39.88\00:01:43.12 which started through his vision. 00:01:43.15\00:01:45.66 I didn't know at the time 00:01:45.69\00:01:47.24 that this was to be the last on camera interview 00:01:47.27\00:01:50.46 that Elder Wilson would give before his death. 00:01:50.49\00:01:54.24 Also, on today's program 00:01:54.27\00:01:56.00 video producer Dan Weber tells us 00:01:56.03\00:01:57.94 about a Global Mission Pioneer in Singapore 00:01:57.97\00:02:00.77 holding meetings under a streetlight. 00:02:00.80\00:02:03.39 We also visit house churches in Cuba 00:02:03.42\00:02:05.79 and we meet with Pastor Milton Adams 00:02:05.82\00:02:08.06 who heads up simple church, a house church network 00:02:08.09\00:02:12.45 that started here in the United States 00:02:12.48\00:02:14.77 but is now starting to spread around the world. 00:02:14.80\00:02:19.02 We often talk about the mission challenge overseas 00:02:19.05\00:02:23.93 and there are tremendous challenges in places 00:02:23.96\00:02:26.71 such as the 10/40 Window 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.68 but even here, right here in North America 00:02:28.71\00:02:30.61 we have a mission field 00:02:30.64\00:02:31.67 and to talk about that with me is Pastor Milton Adams. 00:02:31.70\00:02:35.03 Milton, thank you so much for joining us. 00:02:35.06\00:02:38.05 You have a background as a church pastor, 00:02:38.08\00:02:41.93 you a few years ago started looking at the challenge 00:02:41.96\00:02:45.45 of the mission in North America, 00:02:45.48\00:02:47.13 what did you see? 00:02:47.16\00:02:49.25 Probably, one of the first things 00:02:49.28\00:02:50.31 that caught my attention 00:02:50.34\00:02:51.73 were some researches done by Dave Olson 00:02:51.76\00:02:53.87 where he discovered that about 87% of Americans 00:02:53.90\00:02:59.36 no longer go to church on a given weekend, 00:02:59.39\00:03:02.59 and that for my wife and I raised 00:03:02.62\00:03:05.29 a whole question of missionary work. 00:03:05.32\00:03:07.72 How do you reach a culture that used to be Christian 00:03:07.75\00:03:11.95 but is now turned back secular? 00:03:11.98\00:03:15.43 How do we reach these people? 00:03:15.46\00:03:17.36 Now, may you've viewers might not be aware of this problem 00:03:17.39\00:03:20.53 because they're probably living in the areas 00:03:20.56\00:03:22.01 where there are churches everywhere. 00:03:22.04\00:03:25.70 How deep is this-- 00:03:25.73\00:03:26.76 I mean is this a new phenomenon, what, what's happening? 00:03:26.79\00:03:31.02 America has a Christian background 00:03:31.05\00:03:33.28 and it has in name 00:03:33.31\00:03:34.58 a nominal Christian background even still. 00:03:34.61\00:03:37.80 But there is a growing, there is a growing disconnect 00:03:37.83\00:03:42.24 between culture and the church culture, 00:03:42.27\00:03:46.35 and people more and more are saying, 00:03:46.38\00:03:48.79 I'm very interested in God, 00:03:48.82\00:03:50.98 I'm very interested in spiritual growth 00:03:51.01\00:03:53.40 but if I have to go through the religious, 00:03:53.43\00:03:56.35 don't misunderstand what I'll say, 00:03:56.38\00:03:57.72 but the religious trappings to find God no, thank you. 00:03:57.75\00:04:02.53 I will go to a different venue to try to discover who God is. 00:04:02.56\00:04:07.69 And so we often see people now talking about 00:04:07.72\00:04:09.98 well, I'm interested in spirituality 00:04:10.01\00:04:12.91 but not in the church. Right. 00:04:12.94\00:04:14.83 So, Milton, how-- 00:04:14.86\00:04:16.50 in your experience how did you respond to this? 00:04:16.53\00:04:18.97 What happened? 00:04:19.00\00:04:20.28 Well, my wife and I looked at each other 00:04:20.31\00:04:22.21 we said, how do we reach this people? 00:04:22.24\00:04:23.70 So, that the whole thing started with a missionary quest. 00:04:23.73\00:04:27.70 So we started just kind of an experiment 00:04:27.73\00:04:31.79 in our own home. 00:04:31.82\00:04:33.77 I had transitioned into a teaching environment 00:04:33.80\00:04:36.31 which allowed me then on weekends 00:04:36.34\00:04:38.33 not to be tied up 00:04:38.36\00:04:39.39 with a traditional church environment. 00:04:39.42\00:04:41.93 And we said, we'll start a house church. 00:04:41.96\00:04:44.25 Now, house church that we ended up calling Simple Church, 00:04:44.28\00:04:48.48 is not taking a conventional church environment 00:04:48.51\00:04:52.05 squeezing it through the front doors and expanding it. 00:04:52.08\00:04:55.93 It is a whole different paradigm that takes place 00:04:55.96\00:04:59.03 and it's primarily a relational paradigm 00:04:59.06\00:05:02.18 that centers around ultimately sharing 00:05:02.21\00:05:05.60 the everlasting gospel with people, 00:05:05.63\00:05:08.26 but it is in an informal environment 00:05:08.29\00:05:12.26 that breaks down the barriers 00:05:12.29\00:05:14.95 for them to say, okay, I trust you 00:05:14.98\00:05:18.84 now I'm willing to take next steps. 00:05:18.87\00:05:21.56 Okay, so what you are saying is that there are people 00:05:21.59\00:05:23.99 who would never set foot 00:05:24.02\00:05:25.63 within the four walls of a traditional church 00:05:25.66\00:05:28.16 but they might be open to coming to your home. 00:05:28.19\00:05:31.67 So how did you start? 00:05:31.70\00:05:34.39 We asked one other family, 00:05:34.42\00:05:36.82 one other Adventist family committed family to say, 00:05:36.85\00:05:41.23 would you be willing to join us in this experiment? 00:05:41.26\00:05:44.73 From there it has grown, it is now a global network. 00:05:44.76\00:05:50.00 Where committed people who are humble 00:05:50.03\00:05:54.43 but who want to live the mission experiences 00:05:54.46\00:05:57.28 as supposed to the traditional go overseas to be a missionary, 00:05:57.31\00:06:02.01 it's a way of life, who you live your mission story 00:06:02.04\00:06:06.15 in your own hometown, in your own apartment complex, 00:06:06.18\00:06:08.96 in your home neighborhood. 00:06:08.99\00:06:10.62 And that's part of a beauty about Simple Church 00:06:10.65\00:06:12.98 is that in environments where there is no presence, 00:06:13.01\00:06:17.03 no Christian or Adventist presence, 00:06:17.06\00:06:19.65 way out in a country it is very possible to use this, 00:06:19.68\00:06:23.53 but even more so in the city environments. 00:06:23.56\00:06:26.02 I'm told continually over and over, 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.91 we are having a more difficult times sustaining 00:06:28.94\00:06:33.03 the cost factors in reaching these major cities. 00:06:33.06\00:06:39.14 Simple Church doesn't have those cost overhead implications 00:06:39.17\00:06:43.66 in its grassroots its simple and it's done by laypeople. 00:06:43.69\00:06:49.65 Now, so how many of these Simple Churches, 00:06:49.68\00:06:52.67 home churches are there now? 00:06:52.70\00:06:54.84 We are in to about three years, 00:06:54.87\00:06:58.94 just over three years, three and a half years 00:06:58.97\00:07:00.79 and as of this morning, as of two days ago there was 30, 00:07:00.82\00:07:04.62 which is not a lot. 00:07:04.65\00:07:05.93 That's great. 00:07:05.96\00:07:06.99 But I looked this morning we have 32, 00:07:07.02\00:07:09.40 so two more have started just in the last couple days. 00:07:09.43\00:07:14.20 Now, these are Seventh-day Adventist groups? 00:07:14.23\00:07:16.38 They are Seventh-day Adventist groups. 00:07:16.41\00:07:17.89 Meeting in homes? 00:07:17.92\00:07:18.95 Meeting homes led by laypeople, who have a missionary heart 00:07:18.98\00:07:23.84 which means I leave my comfort zones of conventional church 00:07:23.87\00:07:29.55 which is a challenge, but its, for missionaries it's the norm. 00:07:29.58\00:07:33.25 I fly overseas, I learn different language, 00:07:33.28\00:07:37.04 different food, new culture I dress differently. 00:07:37.07\00:07:40.28 We are taking those same missionary principles 00:07:40.31\00:07:42.40 and applying them in the secular cultures 00:07:42.43\00:07:45.28 of North America, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe. 00:07:45.31\00:07:49.89 Now, can you tell me an experience of somebody 00:07:49.92\00:07:52.69 whose life has been changed through Simple Church? 00:07:52.72\00:07:56.08 I've gotten permission, 00:07:56.11\00:07:57.22 I have to be very careful with stories 00:07:57.25\00:07:59.62 because this is built in a context of trust. 00:07:59.65\00:08:03.51 Yes. 00:08:03.54\00:08:04.57 So many of these stories 00:08:04.60\00:08:06.02 are too raw and they are too recent 00:08:06.05\00:08:08.01 but I got permission to share a story. 00:08:08.04\00:08:10.57 There is a family who came from a background 00:08:10.60\00:08:15.73 of one of the larger marijuana producers 00:08:15.76\00:08:20.20 for their particular state. 00:08:20.23\00:08:23.56 It was a very interesting scenario on how they ended up 00:08:23.59\00:08:26.23 coming to our home to Simple Church. 00:08:26.26\00:08:28.86 Simple Church, at first they were resistant 00:08:28.89\00:08:31.83 but once they realized that it was authentic, 00:08:31.86\00:08:34.92 it was real, it wasn't look 00:08:34.95\00:08:37.47 a certain way, act a certain way, 00:08:37.50\00:08:39.17 they could be who they were in spite of their background. 00:08:39.20\00:08:44.39 Over time that family 00:08:44.42\00:08:47.39 began to ask much deeper questions. 00:08:47.42\00:08:51.12 The whole marijuana scene is now a thing of their past, 00:08:51.15\00:08:55.86 the whole gator poaching, now that may be puts it 00:08:55.89\00:08:59.80 into the south part of the United States 00:08:59.83\00:09:01.64 is a thing of their past. 00:09:01.67\00:09:04.18 A couple years ago they were, they were baptized 00:09:04.21\00:09:08.07 and to see the change 00:09:08.10\00:09:09.94 coming from very hard secular people 00:09:09.97\00:09:17.47 in the core, in the heart of much of the marijuana scene 00:09:17.50\00:09:21.46 and to see a 180 degree turn in their lives, 00:09:21.49\00:09:25.01 it's just been incredible. 00:09:25.04\00:09:26.75 But it's happened because trusting relationships 00:09:26.78\00:09:29.25 were built in an informal environment. 00:09:29.28\00:09:31.69 Fantastic. 00:09:31.72\00:09:32.90 Milton, thank you for sharing with us today, 00:09:32.93\00:09:34.74 I appreciate it very much. 00:09:34.77\00:09:36.90 Viewers at home, if you are interested 00:09:36.93\00:09:39.13 in this home church movement 00:09:39.16\00:09:41.37 please just go to AdventistMission.org, 00:09:41.40\00:09:43.60 there you'll see a Simple Church logo 00:09:43.63\00:09:45.65 you can click on there and find out more information 00:09:45.68\00:09:48.72 how you too may be involved in this movement to reach people 00:09:48.75\00:09:54.03 who may not be reached in any other way 00:09:54.06\00:09:56.94 but to find a worshipping group 00:09:56.97\00:09:58.77 in a home, in a relational environment. 00:09:58.80\00:10:01.16 Have you ever walked city streets 00:10:06.17\00:10:08.24 and looked, just looked. 00:10:08.27\00:10:13.13 Looked at the people Jesus died to save? 00:10:13.16\00:10:16.17 The words of Jesus 00:10:20.59\00:10:22.03 eco down through the centuries, go, go, go. 00:10:22.06\00:10:28.32 Go into all the world and make disciples. 00:10:28.35\00:10:31.37 In the late 1980's the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:10:35.79\00:10:39.58 began looking at where the church was growing 00:10:39.61\00:10:42.53 and where it was struggling. 00:10:42.56\00:10:45.60 My conviction was that we were coming to the close of time. 00:10:45.63\00:10:51.91 It has become more and more certain to some of us 00:10:51.94\00:10:55.04 that the church really does need global strategy. 00:10:55.07\00:11:01.71 After much prayer, study and planning 00:11:01.74\00:11:04.60 the 1990 General Conference in Session 00:11:04.63\00:11:07.66 voted the Global Mission initiative with one primary task 00:11:07.69\00:11:11.94 to start new Seventh-day Adventist congregations 00:11:11.97\00:11:15.28 among new people groups and in new areas. 00:11:15.31\00:11:18.17 In the past 20 years the church has grown 00:11:23.48\00:11:25.74 from six million to nearly 17 million. 00:11:25.77\00:11:29.53 The inclinational ministry of Global Mission Pioneers 00:11:29.56\00:11:32.69 has established thousands of new groups of believers 00:11:32.72\00:11:35.59 around the world. 00:11:35.62\00:11:37.49 In the past 20 years 00:11:37.52\00:11:38.91 Global Mission religious study centers around the world 00:11:38.94\00:11:41.96 have pioneered new methods and models 00:11:41.99\00:11:44.19 to build fresh bridges of understanding 00:11:44.22\00:11:47.16 to reach out with compassion 00:11:47.19\00:11:48.77 to the people of Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam 00:11:48.80\00:11:54.45 and the world of the Secular and Postmodern. 00:11:54.48\00:11:56.97 We praise God for the tremendous growth of the church. 00:12:00.35\00:12:04.26 There are now believers 00:12:04.29\00:12:05.50 in hundreds of new people groups, 00:12:05.53\00:12:07.92 new countries and territories have been entered. 00:12:07.95\00:12:10.97 The 10/40 Window has received 00:12:11.00\00:12:12.91 far more attention and resources 00:12:12.94\00:12:15.19 and the church there has grown rapidly. 00:12:15.22\00:12:18.58 But we're still here. 00:12:18.61\00:12:20.22 We've been told that it's not a time 00:12:20.25\00:12:22.84 but a task that separates us from the coming of Christ. 00:12:22.87\00:12:26.33 This gospel of the kingdom 00:12:26.36\00:12:28.10 will be preached in all the world. 00:12:28.13\00:12:30.19 We're witness to all nations then will the end come. 00:12:30.22\00:12:32.79 If we want the end to come 00:12:32.82\00:12:34.33 we want to finish the task that's been given to us. 00:12:34.36\00:12:38.63 With a great purpose of Global Mission 00:12:38.66\00:12:41.92 is even more current than it's ever been. 00:12:41.95\00:12:44.32 Today in 2010, 00:12:51.18\00:12:53.31 we face an even larger Global Mission challenge than in 1990. 00:12:53.34\00:12:58.44 We need a fresh and greater vision 00:12:58.47\00:13:00.16 for the needs of the world. 00:13:00.19\00:13:01.46 Once again we need the power of the Holy Spirit 00:13:04.72\00:13:07.66 to move us outside our comfort zones. 00:13:07.69\00:13:11.18 We must find new and fresh ways 00:13:11.21\00:13:13.13 to reach the unreached with hope. 00:13:13.16\00:13:16.55 We need to recommit ourselves 00:13:16.58\00:13:18.53 to look on the crowds with compassion, 00:13:18.56\00:13:21.62 just like Jesus our Savior. 00:13:21.65\00:13:24.80 When we look at the mission challenge that still reminds 00:13:34.76\00:13:37.67 we can not ignore the growing urban areas of the world. 00:13:37.70\00:13:41.43 In fact, in 2007 for the first time 00:13:41.46\00:13:44.75 in the history of the world 00:13:44.78\00:13:46.20 more people started living in cities and outside of them. 00:13:46.23\00:13:50.14 My guest is Dan Weber, 00:13:50.17\00:13:51.48 a video producer for Adventist Mission. 00:13:51.51\00:13:54.06 Dan travels the world gathering mission stories 00:13:54.09\00:13:56.57 and Dan, you were recently in Singapore 00:13:56.60\00:13:59.70 which is a country which I guess is 100% urban. 00:13:59.73\00:14:03.19 Totally urban. Yeah. Yeah, just one big city. 00:14:03.22\00:14:05.56 One big gigantic city. 00:14:05.59\00:14:06.85 Now, what is happening there in terms of mission? 00:14:06.88\00:14:10.72 It's a tough place to reach people. 00:14:10.75\00:14:12.71 Very, very secular. 00:14:12.74\00:14:15.36 Singapore probably is considered a Muslim country 00:14:15.39\00:14:18.36 but really it's a very secular country 00:14:18.39\00:14:22.44 and it's a very expensive place, 00:14:22.47\00:14:24.78 it's a very hard place to get mission off the ground. 00:14:24.81\00:14:28.17 People are very focused on making money? 00:14:28.20\00:14:31.01 Focused on making money, 00:14:31.04\00:14:32.09 the government sets up restrictions. 00:14:32.12\00:14:33.80 The guy who was my host there and took me around, 00:14:33.83\00:14:36.43 he is a driving a five year old car. 00:14:36.46\00:14:39.12 And he said to me, do you know how much this car costs? 00:14:39.15\00:14:42.24 And I guessed $5000-$10,000 dollars. 00:14:42.27\00:14:45.08 He said $50,000 dollars. 00:14:45.11\00:14:47.26 But he said you have to have 00:14:47.29\00:14:48.42 a license to be able to buy a car. 00:14:48.45\00:14:50.96 And the license cost another $ 50,000 dollars. 00:14:50.99\00:14:53.97 So, he spent $ 100,000 dollars on a five year old car 00:14:54.00\00:14:57.69 and you're only allowed to keep the car for 10 years. 00:14:57.72\00:15:00.22 It's all 10 years old 00:15:00.25\00:15:01.28 because they want everyone drive new cars. 00:15:01.31\00:15:03.32 So then you have to get rid of the car 00:15:03.35\00:15:04.74 and go through the whole process again. 00:15:04.77\00:15:06.66 It just the example how expensive 00:15:06.69\00:15:08.78 and how hard it is to get things done there. 00:15:08.81\00:15:11.01 And people are living in high-rise apartments 00:15:11.04\00:15:13.26 and even just to get access to talk to people-- 00:15:13.29\00:15:15.95 Very, very hard. Logistically very hard. 00:15:15.98\00:15:17.69 Yes. Yes. 00:15:17.72\00:15:18.75 Now, tell me about a project 00:15:18.78\00:15:20.44 there that involved Global Mission 00:15:20.47\00:15:23.41 trying to reach out to people. 00:15:23.44\00:15:26.09 I met with a pastor, pastor, pastor Raj 00:15:26.12\00:15:28.52 and he went around 00:15:28.55\00:15:30.52 and there is a large immigrant worker community there. 00:15:30.55\00:15:33.71 These are people who work, who come from overseas, 00:15:33.74\00:15:37.10 the majority of them come from India 00:15:37.13\00:15:38.86 and Bangladesh and Pakistan. 00:15:38.89\00:15:40.55 So they are either Hindu or Muslim 00:15:40.58\00:15:42.48 and they are coming in 00:15:42.51\00:15:43.54 and they pay a large amount of money 00:15:43.57\00:15:46.10 to come over for five years 00:15:46.13\00:15:48.06 and then they are tied to a contract, 00:15:48.09\00:15:49.88 they have to work for company for five years 00:15:49.91\00:15:51.87 but they do this 00:15:51.90\00:15:52.93 because they are able to send money back home 00:15:52.96\00:15:54.70 to the villages where they are poor. 00:15:54.73\00:15:56.96 But they are put in this large dormitories, 00:15:56.99\00:15:59.19 one dormitory we visited had 15,000 people in it 00:15:59.22\00:16:03.17 and what Pastor Paulraj has been able to do is 00:16:03.20\00:16:06.85 he gets to go into some of these dormitories 00:16:06.88\00:16:09.96 and meet with the people 00:16:09.99\00:16:11.77 and he is sharing Jesus with these immigrant workers. 00:16:11.80\00:16:14.30 Great. Now you made a video of this project. 00:16:14.33\00:16:17.70 And I brought along this, take a look at it. 00:16:17.73\00:16:19.12 Yeah. 00:16:19.15\00:16:20.18 Several times a week 00:16:37.04\00:16:38.79 pastor Paulraj visits dormitories 00:16:38.82\00:16:41.23 on the outskirts of Singapore. 00:16:41.26\00:16:43.55 The men who live here are migrant workers 00:16:43.58\00:16:45.72 from the countries of India and Bangladesh. 00:16:45.75\00:16:48.73 They have left their families 00:16:48.76\00:16:50.10 so that they can come to Singapore and earn money 00:16:50.13\00:16:52.26 that they can send back home. 00:16:52.29\00:16:54.55 Pastor Raj meets with them in small groups 00:16:54.58\00:16:56.91 so that he can share the Gospel. 00:16:56.94\00:16:58.98 They trust him 00:16:59.01\00:17:00.04 and appreciate his concern for their well being. 00:17:00.07\00:17:03.36 Many of them have become members 00:17:03.39\00:17:05.13 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:17:05.16\00:17:07.36 Thanks to you. 00:17:07.39\00:17:08.42 Global Mission is able to support 00:17:08.45\00:17:10.10 the work of Pastor Raj 00:17:10.13\00:17:12.11 and it is one of the many ways that he is reaching out 00:17:12.14\00:17:14.47 to the people living in Singapore. 00:17:14.50\00:17:17.31 Each Sabbath a group of Indian immigrants 00:17:17.34\00:17:19.51 meet in a rented room for church services. 00:17:19.54\00:17:22.60 Most of them have recently arrived in Singapore 00:17:22.63\00:17:25.11 and appreciate the chance to worship together 00:17:25.14\00:17:27.11 with fellow Adventists in their own language. 00:17:27.14\00:17:30.28 They enjoy singing together, 00:17:30.31\00:17:32.11 studying the Sabbath school lesson 00:17:32.14\00:17:33.94 and then listen to a sermon from a lay pastor. 00:17:33.97\00:17:36.66 Sabbath for them has become a true day of rest 00:17:36.69\00:17:39.94 and Christian fellowship. 00:17:39.97\00:17:41.31 With some of the migrant workers in the dormitories 00:17:48.17\00:17:50.36 do not have the luxury of visiting church 00:17:50.39\00:17:53.18 their jobs don't let them have Sabbath off. 00:17:53.21\00:17:56.56 They are required to work 00:17:56.59\00:17:57.85 so that they can fulfill their contract. 00:17:57.88\00:18:00.45 For them Pastor Raj has a unique solution. 00:18:00.48\00:18:04.13 This is a streetlight church. 00:18:14.39\00:18:17.02 Several times a week and each Sabbath evening 00:18:17.05\00:18:19.71 a group of migrant workers meet on the side of the road 00:18:19.74\00:18:22.39 under a dim streetlight. 00:18:22.42\00:18:24.59 They first few times they met they were hassled by the police 00:18:24.62\00:18:27.31 because it is illegal to gather as a religious group 00:18:27.34\00:18:30.25 in such a manner. 00:18:30.28\00:18:31.79 Pastor Raj then noticed that other groups were allowed 00:18:31.82\00:18:34.42 to meet on the roadside and drink alcohol. 00:18:34.45\00:18:36.91 The next week the group showed up with bottles of juice 00:18:36.94\00:18:39.99 and the police have left them alone ever since. 00:18:40.02\00:18:43.36 He will do anything for you. 00:18:43.39\00:18:44.42 You will be prosperous, 00:18:44.45\00:18:45.53 you will have blessings, you'll have all such things-- 00:18:45.56\00:18:47.09 Pasto Raj shares the gospel with the roadside group 00:18:47.12\00:18:50.59 and gives them strength and encouragement. 00:18:50.62\00:18:52.69 As they face the hardship of working 00:18:52.72\00:18:54.55 in a foreign land away from their families. 00:18:54.58\00:18:57.91 At the end of the informal service 00:18:57.94\00:18:59.40 he gives them listening devices 00:18:59.43\00:19:00.97 with religious recordings in them 00:19:01.00\00:19:02.98 as a way of nurturing their spiritual growth. 00:19:03.01\00:19:05.90 Each one of them is suffering as a modern day Joseph. 00:19:05.93\00:19:09.86 Set away to work in a foreign land 00:19:09.89\00:19:12.56 and Pastor Raj is there to lead them 00:19:12.59\00:19:14.41 to be one who can fill the void in their lives. 00:19:14.44\00:19:17.44 Your faithful support to Global Mission 00:19:23.61\00:19:26.31 helps to fund projects just like the streetlight church. 00:19:26.34\00:19:30.41 Please continue to pray for the thousands 00:19:30.44\00:19:32.46 of Global Mission Pioneers all over the world, 00:19:32.49\00:19:35.31 who are working on the frontline of mission. 00:19:35.34\00:19:39.04 To learn more about Global Mission 00:19:39.07\00:19:41.04 please visit our website at www.AdventistMission.org. 00:19:41.07\00:19:46.88 Well, that's a side of Singapore that most tourists don't see. 00:19:52.97\00:19:56.58 No, no. 00:19:56.61\00:19:57.74 They work for long hours for very low wages. 00:19:57.77\00:20:01.03 Now the pastor just describe him for me. 00:20:01.06\00:20:03.14 He seems pretty energetic type of a man. 00:20:03.17\00:20:05.43 Very energetic. 00:20:05.46\00:20:07.05 Little tiny guy 00:20:07.08\00:20:08.11 but the most people next to be are little tiny guys. 00:20:08.14\00:20:11.67 Full of energy, he has a real passion to do this. 00:20:11.70\00:20:15.27 There is a couple of the dormitories 00:20:15.30\00:20:17.85 he's allowed to actually go inside 00:20:17.88\00:20:20.03 but most of them they don't allow 00:20:20.06\00:20:21.59 any kind of religious meetings inside 00:20:21.62\00:20:23.15 so that's why they end up on the streets side of the road. 00:20:23.18\00:20:25.85 Now, obviously he's an immigrant himself to Singapore. 00:20:25.88\00:20:28.58 So, he may have gone through a similar experience? 00:20:28.61\00:20:30.40 Yeah, yeah. 00:20:30.43\00:20:31.46 He really understands what they are going through. 00:20:31.49\00:20:32.86 Yeah. 00:20:32.89\00:20:33.92 Thanks for joining us Dan, sharing the story. 00:20:33.95\00:20:34.98 You are welcome. 00:20:35.01\00:20:36.79 And viewers at home, you know, around the world today 00:20:36.82\00:20:39.53 we have so many different types of people groups, 00:20:39.56\00:20:42.85 different countries, different languages, different backgrounds 00:20:42.88\00:20:46.51 and Global Mission finds ways to dress 00:20:46.54\00:20:49.88 the gospel in cloths that people will understand. 00:20:49.91\00:20:53.31 Not compromising, not braking down the message 00:20:53.34\00:20:56.48 but making it appropriate and meaningful to people. 00:20:56.51\00:20:59.44 So please pray for Global Mission Pioneers 00:20:59.47\00:21:02.71 on the frontline of missions 00:21:02.74\00:21:04.47 who are there sharing God's love 00:21:04.50\00:21:06.53 in practical ways to touch people's lives for eternity. 00:21:06.56\00:21:10.38 Its Sunday morning here in Downtown, Havana 00:22:19.83\00:22:22.87 and as I walk the streets and taking a few photos 00:22:22.90\00:22:26.15 and talk with some of the people 00:22:26.18\00:22:27.60 trough the limitations of language, 00:22:27.63\00:22:30.05 its like a different world to me 00:22:30.08\00:22:31.63 but I see this buildings and they decaying, 00:22:31.66\00:22:35.09 they haven't have the economic resources 00:22:35.12\00:22:36.89 to keep them maintained. 00:22:36.92\00:22:39.41 I tend to get little philosophical 00:22:39.44\00:22:41.20 you think about the goal of the restoration 00:22:41.23\00:22:43.82 of the God's image in humanity. 00:22:43.85\00:22:45.29 And that's a goal that we're part of 00:22:45.32\00:22:47.99 as we seek to fulfill the mission 00:22:48.02\00:22:50.59 Jesus has given to tell people about His love. 00:22:50.62\00:22:53.69 And just further up the street as we're just walking along 00:22:53.72\00:22:55.96 we came across this door 00:22:55.99\00:22:57.99 and it have the Adventist Church logo on it 00:22:58.02\00:23:00.78 and I spoke to a translator 00:23:00.81\00:23:02.86 and he explained that this was a house church, 00:23:02.89\00:23:05.46 they call them houses of life here. 00:23:05.49\00:23:07.03 So right here in the center of Havana 00:23:07.06\00:23:09.32 we have a group of Seventh-day Adventist believers 00:23:09.35\00:23:12.02 who are sharing God's love. 00:23:12.05\00:23:13.25 With the prohibition of new church buildings, 00:23:19.74\00:23:22.70 house churches have sprung up 00:23:22.73\00:23:24.54 allover Cuba as the churches grown. 00:23:24.57\00:23:28.59 Local leaders estimate the church 00:23:28.62\00:23:30.69 has more than doubled and almost tripled 00:23:30.72\00:23:33.70 since restrictions were loosened close to 15 years ago. 00:23:33.73\00:23:38.76 These house churches also serve 00:23:38.79\00:23:41.24 as a witnessing tool to the community. 00:23:41.27\00:23:44.86 Lay members to get to know 00:23:44.89\00:23:46.48 those people living near the house of worship, 00:23:46.51\00:23:49.75 inviting them to come and learn about a loving God 00:23:49.78\00:23:54.28 who wants to fill the void that they have in their lives. 00:23:54.31\00:23:59.65 The house churches are lay led 00:23:59.68\00:24:02.61 and the members that share their faith do so with a passion 00:24:02.64\00:24:07.12 that's contagious to those who listen. 00:24:07.15\00:24:09.22 The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Cuba is growing, it's alive. 00:24:17.59\00:24:22.81 It's making a difference in its community, 00:24:22.84\00:24:26.19 its reaching out. 00:24:26.22\00:24:28.35 The church in Cuba has only one wish, only one goal. 00:24:28.38\00:24:33.86 Thank you so much for your prayerful support 00:24:33.89\00:24:37.03 of the mission of this church. 00:24:37.06\00:24:39.86 Thanks for doing your part 00:24:39.89\00:24:42.29 in helping tell the world about Jesus. 00:24:42.32\00:24:45.08 The office of Adventist Mission
