It's not just the cliche that the world has shrunk. 00:00:07.71\00:00:10.82 Here in the United States we have every tribe, 00:00:10.85\00:00:13.92 language, tongue and people through immigration 00:00:13.95\00:00:16.64 and it seems like every cuisine from around the world. 00:00:16.67\00:00:20.15 But what are we doing to touch the lives of immigrants? 00:00:20.18\00:00:23.50 Survey show that the vast majority of people 00:00:23.53\00:00:26.07 from other religious tradition say, 00:00:26.10\00:00:28.30 I don't even know one Christian. 00:00:28.33\00:00:31.25 Welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:31.28\00:00:33.49 Just before He went up to heaven, 00:00:38.03\00:00:40.54 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:40.57\00:00:43.48 He gave us a mission. 00:00:43.51\00:00:46.20 Jesus said, "Go, go unto all the world, 00:00:46.23\00:00:51.00 telling them of His love." 00:00:51.03\00:00:53.59 This is our mission. This is our Global Mission. 00:00:53.62\00:00:57.51 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:01:03.01\00:01:05.47 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:05.50\00:01:07.00 Imagine leaving your home, leaving your country 00:01:07.03\00:01:10.15 and moving to the other side of the world. 00:01:10.18\00:01:12.82 Well, I don't have to imagine 00:01:12.85\00:01:13.88 because my wife Patina and I did it. 00:01:13.91\00:01:16.50 It's not so easy even under the best of circumstances. 00:01:16.53\00:01:19.81 When we moved to the United States 00:01:19.84\00:01:21.91 at least they spoke English, well, sort of. 00:01:21.94\00:01:24.96 But imagine being forced to leave your home country 00:01:24.99\00:01:27.70 because of persecution. 00:01:27.73\00:01:29.50 Imagine moving to a place where the language, 00:01:29.53\00:01:32.29 the customs, the culture are totally different 00:01:32.32\00:01:35.65 where you don't even know one person. 00:01:35.68\00:01:38.93 Some leave the steaming jungles of Southeast Asia 00:01:38.96\00:01:42.36 to arrive in places like Minnesota or upstate New York 00:01:42.39\00:01:46.02 in the middle of winter. 00:01:46.05\00:01:47.62 Everything's new, everything's different. 00:01:47.65\00:01:51.17 According to the United Nations most recent statistics 00:01:51.20\00:01:54.67 there are more than 10 million refugees worldwide. 00:01:54.70\00:01:58.84 Today we'll be talking with Terri Saelee, 00:01:58.87\00:02:01.50 coordinator for Refugee and Immigrant Ministries 00:02:01.53\00:02:04.76 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America. 00:02:04.79\00:02:08.10 As a college student Terri volunteered teaching 00:02:08.13\00:02:11.18 in refugee camps in Thailand. 00:02:11.21\00:02:13.73 She came back to the United States 00:02:13.76\00:02:15.39 with a passion to help refugees 00:02:15.42\00:02:18.07 and immigrants back home but first up, this message. 00:02:18.10\00:02:22.55 It's my pleasure to welcome to our program Terri Saelee. 00:02:53.71\00:02:57.79 Terri, thanks for joining us. 00:02:57.82\00:02:59.64 Thank you, it's a privilege. 00:02:59.67\00:03:01.06 You are the-- you head up 00:03:01.09\00:03:03.24 the Refugee and Immigrant Ministries 00:03:03.27\00:03:05.61 for the Adventist church in North America. 00:03:05.64\00:03:08.28 Tell me what does this role involve? 00:03:08.31\00:03:11.44 What do you do? 00:03:11.47\00:03:12.93 Well, I prayerfully find ways for Adventist's 00:03:12.96\00:03:18.94 to reach out to refugees, immigrants 00:03:18.97\00:03:21.99 and visitors to North America. 00:03:22.02\00:03:24.26 Now, refugees, immigrants, visitors, 00:03:24.29\00:03:27.04 can you define what they mean? 00:03:27.07\00:03:29.05 Yes, refugees are people 00:03:29.08\00:03:31.58 who have to flee across national borders 00:03:31.61\00:03:36.13 for a well-grounded fear of persecution 00:03:36.16\00:03:38.49 and there's a very careful screening of these people. 00:03:38.52\00:03:44.70 And they are screened by the United Nations 00:03:44.73\00:03:48.25 before they're given refugee status 00:03:48.28\00:03:51.22 and then they are eligible for a third country 00:03:51.25\00:03:55.12 that's willing to resettle refugees to come for interviews. 00:03:55.15\00:04:00.55 And immigrants are just people who come through choice? 00:04:00.58\00:04:03.12 Yes, immigrants, actually once refugees are here 00:04:03.15\00:04:06.76 after one year then they are eligible 00:04:06.79\00:04:09.21 for permanent residency status 00:04:09.24\00:04:11.49 which means they're eligible to become immigrants. 00:04:11.52\00:04:17.94 But of course the refugee experience never leaves them. 00:04:17.97\00:04:21.73 No. 00:04:21.76\00:04:25.52 The visitors to North America are actually temporarily hear, 00:04:25.55\00:04:32.26 there are totally on the average 00:04:32.29\00:04:35.03 of 104,000 refugees immigrants and visitors 00:04:35.06\00:04:40.88 who come everyday to North America. 00:04:40.91\00:04:43.98 Wow. 00:04:44.01\00:04:45.06 And some immigrants, refugees and immigrants come to stay, 00:04:45.09\00:04:50.03 the others whether they are international students 00:04:50.06\00:04:53.18 or whether they come for temporary work 00:04:53.21\00:04:58.99 or come as diplomats they are here for a short time 00:04:59.02\00:05:06.18 but they have the potential of sharing 00:05:06.21\00:05:08.43 what they learn here when they come back. 00:05:08.46\00:05:10.13 Right. 00:05:10.16\00:05:11.19 Now this is a very challenging time of transition 00:05:11.22\00:05:14.81 for refugees when they come 00:05:14.84\00:05:16.65 just destabilized world for them, 00:05:16.68\00:05:20.09 how welcoming is the Christian Church 00:05:20.12\00:05:22.18 in North America to these people? 00:05:22.21\00:05:24.24 Well, actually we are a quiet unaware, 00:05:24.27\00:05:28.80 actually the UN, Americans in general 00:05:28.83\00:05:31.91 are known to be ignorant of refugees, 00:05:31.94\00:05:34.70 who they are, why they're here. 00:05:34.73\00:05:38.16 And there's so much news about illegal immigrants 00:05:38.19\00:05:41.50 that once they hear the word immigrant 00:05:41.53\00:05:44.80 just almost automatically without thinking about it 00:05:44.83\00:05:47.35 some of us think illegal. 00:05:47.38\00:05:50.30 But by far the majority are not illegal 00:05:50.33\00:05:53.32 and they bring a rich asset to our country as well. 00:05:53.35\00:05:59.25 But refugees especially have gone through so much 00:05:59.28\00:06:03.34 and when they come 00:06:03.37\00:06:05.68 they've had to leave the country they love, 00:06:05.71\00:06:08.07 most of them very reluctantly. 00:06:08.10\00:06:10.45 They're not eager to come-- I can tell you stories 00:06:10.48\00:06:16.02 but when they come they are ready 00:06:16.05\00:06:20.09 and eager to learn American culture, 00:06:20.12\00:06:23.74 the English language to fit in, to be productive 00:06:23.77\00:06:27.87 but often about six months to a year after they arrive 00:06:27.90\00:06:31.59 they realize how very difficult it is to learn the language, 00:06:31.62\00:06:35.13 to survive most refugees have three months of assistance 00:06:35.16\00:06:39.39 and then they are on their own. 00:06:39.42\00:06:40.51 They have to speak enough English, 00:06:40.54\00:06:41.77 have a driver's license, be able to drive 00:06:41.80\00:06:44.43 and be self-sufficient, 00:06:44.46\00:06:48.62 making their own money and its very stressful 00:06:48.65\00:06:51.31 because many of them come from cultures, 00:06:51.34\00:06:55.27 from the jungle of Southeast Asia 00:06:55.30\00:06:58.98 and their skill set, 00:06:59.01\00:07:01.88 gardening skills honed for centuries. 00:07:01.91\00:07:05.27 There's no place for them to practice those-- 00:07:05.30\00:07:07.91 to use those skills in the middle of the cities 00:07:07.94\00:07:10.62 where they are dumped 00:07:10.65\00:07:12.01 and they have to get used to the concrete jungle. 00:07:12.04\00:07:15.06 And often six months to a year after they arrive 00:07:15.09\00:07:18.77 post traumatic shock syndrome sets in 00:07:18.80\00:07:21.21 because just such a feeling of helplessness 00:07:21.24\00:07:24.24 and hopelessness to ever really be productive 00:07:24.27\00:07:28.88 and capable of showing their appreciation 00:07:28.91\00:07:33.85 to this country that has welcomed them. 00:07:33.88\00:07:36.43 Yeah. 00:07:36.46\00:07:37.49 So what-- just briefly, 00:07:37.52\00:07:40.05 what should be our response to these people? 00:07:40.08\00:07:44.83 You know, the more welcoming we can be the better. 00:07:44.86\00:07:49.07 Make friends with them, you may-- 00:07:49.10\00:07:51.76 I believe God gives us divine appointment. 00:07:51.79\00:07:56.31 At the gross-- in the grocery line, 00:07:56.34\00:07:58.86 at the gas station often we'll meet people 00:07:58.89\00:08:02.85 who we no idea what they've been through. 00:08:02.88\00:08:06.02 They have-- may have had to flee for their lives 00:08:06.05\00:08:09.13 and just for us to say hello 00:08:09.16\00:08:11.25 or cheery smile, hello, watch for something 00:08:11.28\00:08:13.51 we can do to help be interested. 00:08:13.54\00:08:15.94 Often we as Americans tend to-- 00:08:15.97\00:08:19.11 we taught not to ask certain questions, 00:08:19.14\00:08:21.39 don't ask a woman's age, don't ask a person's income, 00:08:21.42\00:08:25.03 don't ask where they live because they might-- 00:08:25.06\00:08:27.56 But this is the opposite of what these people need. 00:08:27.59\00:08:30.61 They need people to care enough to get involved in their lives, 00:08:30.64\00:08:33.64 to ask, where do you live, 00:08:33.67\00:08:35.78 to go and visit them and see where they live, 00:08:35.81\00:08:38.86 to find out what they need and get involved, 00:08:38.89\00:08:42.15 invite them to our home, share our lives 00:08:42.18\00:08:44.80 and our families with them. 00:08:44.83\00:08:45.93 This is the best thing we could do for a refugee, 00:08:45.96\00:08:49.36 immigrant or visitor to our country. 00:08:49.39\00:08:52.16 We're gonna continue talking some more 00:08:52.19\00:08:53.66 but first we're just going to go and visit Minnesota 00:08:53.69\00:08:57.56 to see some ministry taking place there. 00:08:57.59\00:08:59.84 The big challenge was that we simply felt totally isolated. 00:09:17.91\00:09:23.20 We didn't have people who could talk 00:09:23.23\00:09:26.09 but somehow my parents through-- 00:09:26.12\00:09:28.50 a family that spoke German found some jobs in a factory. 00:09:28.53\00:09:33.10 One of the problems was that there were good people 00:09:33.13\00:09:36.62 you're dealing with, there were also people 00:09:36.65\00:09:38.25 who take advantage of you and you never knew which it was. 00:09:38.28\00:09:41.88 And so finding an apartment, somehow we found an apartment, 00:09:41.91\00:09:46.45 second floor of the house and we moved in into it 00:09:46.48\00:09:51.17 without any furniture or anything 00:09:51.20\00:09:52.68 but at least it was ours. 00:09:52.71\00:09:55.33 At that time we have made some contact with the church-- 00:09:55.36\00:09:58.16 or the church would make contact with us, 00:09:58.19\00:09:59.96 the Adventist church. 00:09:59.99\00:10:01.66 So they helped us with that move. 00:10:01.69\00:10:04.14 Without them it would have been really almost impossible. 00:10:04.17\00:10:08.49 We talk about a church reaching out to individuals in need. 00:10:08.52\00:10:13.03 An immigrant is a person or family or group of people 00:10:13.06\00:10:19.14 who have left something that was known to them, 00:10:19.17\00:10:22.44 have come to something that's very unknown 00:10:22.47\00:10:24.92 and strange to them and they feel awkward. 00:10:24.95\00:10:28.75 They don't know want to say, they don't know want to do, 00:10:28.78\00:10:31.01 they don't know how to behave. 00:10:31.04\00:10:33.11 And so that's the mission of the church 00:10:33.14\00:10:35.96 is to reach out to people who have needs 00:10:35.99\00:10:39.16 and certainly immigrants are people who have very, 00:10:39.19\00:10:41.72 very specific needs at that moment. 00:10:41.75\00:10:43.61 Every weekday morning Blia Xiong, 00:11:18.75\00:11:22.07 a Hmong refugee from Thailand, 00:11:22.10\00:11:25.01 drives her two young children to the local 00:11:25.04\00:11:27.35 Seventh-day Adventist elementary school. 00:11:27.38\00:11:30.55 Adventist education is so important to her, 00:11:30.58\00:11:33.94 that she lives in a homeless shelter 00:11:33.97\00:11:35.94 so that she can afford to pay her children's tuition. 00:11:35.97\00:11:39.82 Unable to work because of a disability, 00:11:39.85\00:11:42.70 most of her income goes to providing 00:11:42.73\00:11:45.03 a Christian education for her children. 00:11:45.06\00:11:47.87 The thing that I hunger and thirst for the most is God. 00:11:53.71\00:11:57.43 So that's why it's so important 00:11:57.46\00:11:58.86 that my children attend an Adventist school 00:11:58.89\00:12:01.12 because I want them to know God. 00:12:01.15\00:12:03.36 That's why I decided no matter what hardships 00:12:03.39\00:12:05.90 I have to go through, it's worth it to me. 00:12:05.93\00:12:08.51 The snow covered landscape of St. Paul, Minnesota 00:12:18.97\00:12:23.07 is a stark contrast to the humid streets 00:12:23.10\00:12:26.14 of the large cities of Southeast Asia. 00:12:26.17\00:12:29.40 Anyone who immigrates here 00:12:29.43\00:12:31.82 must learn to battle the extreme cold 00:12:31.85\00:12:34.51 as well as the culture shock of living in North America. 00:12:34.54\00:12:39.01 St. Paul has become a settlement of sorts 00:12:39.04\00:12:41.63 for refugees from Asia, Africa, Europe and Central America. 00:12:41.66\00:12:47.71 The Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America 00:12:47.74\00:12:50.84 has focused on reaching out to the Hmong and Karen groups 00:12:50.87\00:12:55.57 in the greater St. Paul and Minneapolis areas. 00:12:55.60\00:12:59.59 This quarter a portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering 00:12:59.62\00:13:03.61 will go to help Refugee Outreach Ministry projects 00:13:03.64\00:13:07.35 throughout the North American Division. 00:13:07.38\00:13:10.47 Teri Salee is the project coordinator and has worked 00:13:10.50\00:13:14.54 among refugee groups for many years. 00:13:14.57\00:13:17.68 Her tireless dedication to reaching out 00:13:17.71\00:13:20.46 to unreached people groups 00:13:20.49\00:13:22.59 is a wonderful example of serving 00:13:22.62\00:13:24.81 as Christ's hands here on earth. 00:13:24.84\00:13:28.09 So it is significant that we are able 00:13:28.12\00:13:31.11 to do something to assist them to grow 00:13:31.14\00:13:33.56 as we have done with our other groups traditionally 00:13:33.59\00:13:36.92 and individuals like Teri Salee 00:13:36.95\00:13:38.78 who is very active in working with the Hmong 00:13:38.81\00:13:42.34 people need our support, 00:13:42.37\00:13:44.20 but we need to do something larger 00:13:44.23\00:13:46.63 and so hence the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:13:46.66\00:13:49.95 is a very welcomed offering in North America. 00:13:49.98\00:13:54.96 Several times a week, Blia meets with a small group 00:13:54.99\00:13:58.83 of Hmong refugees to study the Bible. 00:13:58.86\00:14:02.58 While some of them are currently attending church, 00:14:02.61\00:14:05.66 for others this the first time 00:14:05.69\00:14:08.17 that they have ever opened and read a Bible. 00:14:08.20\00:14:11.73 They ask questions and learn to sing hymns. 00:14:11.76\00:14:15.42 At the end of the meeting 00:14:15.45\00:14:16.79 they offer up to God their first prayer to Him. 00:14:16.82\00:14:21.24 For Blia, no matter how hard her circumstances are, 00:14:21.27\00:14:25.83 she will never stop sharing the good news of Jesus 00:14:25.86\00:14:29.33 with the Hmong community. 00:14:29.36\00:14:32.03 Telling others about Jesus 00:14:32.06\00:14:34.33 is an emotional experience for Blia. 00:14:34.36\00:14:38.90 God Loves me and every time 00:14:38.93\00:14:40.60 I think about that love and talk about that love 00:14:40.63\00:14:43.76 the tears just come because He loves me so much. 00:14:43.79\00:14:47.52 I'm so touched by God's love 00:14:47.55\00:14:49.37 that I can't keep the tears back. 00:14:49.40\00:14:51.60 The Eastside Seventh-day Adventist Church in St. Paul 00:15:02.91\00:15:06.66 is home to an eclectic group of believers. 00:15:06.69\00:15:09.90 People from Africa, Asia and North America meet each week 00:15:09.93\00:15:14.08 to worship the God they serve and love. 00:15:14.11\00:15:17.88 In the basement Karen refugees from the country of Burma 00:15:17.91\00:15:21.94 hold a Sabbath School class in their own language. 00:15:21.97\00:15:25.12 Most of their members don't have access to transportation, 00:15:25.15\00:15:28.75 so one of their leaders drives a van to pick up members 00:15:28.78\00:15:31.62 from all over the St. Paul area. 00:15:31.65\00:15:34.47 There are more than 4,000 Karen refugees 00:15:34.50\00:15:37.83 that now call Minneapolis and St. Paul home, 00:15:37.86\00:15:41.95 and more than 200 of them 00:15:41.98\00:15:44.35 are now Seventh-day Adventist members. 00:15:44.38\00:15:47.67 They are in need of their own place of worship 00:15:47.70\00:15:50.18 where they can invite others from the Karen community 00:15:50.21\00:15:53.10 to learn about Jesus. 00:15:53.13\00:15:55.31 Their resources are limited and they ask for your prayers 00:15:55.34\00:15:59.15 as they struggle to meet the demands 00:15:59.18\00:16:01.01 of this growing refugee group. 00:16:01.04\00:16:04.39 Saw Morrison is one of the lay leaders 00:16:04.42\00:16:07.24 and he only works a part time job 00:16:07.27\00:16:09.53 so that he can work among the Karen community. 00:16:09.56\00:16:13.25 He helps them to find jobs, apartments and assists them 00:16:13.28\00:16:17.52 with their immigration issues. 00:16:17.55\00:16:19.65 He also makes sure to invite them to church. 00:16:19.68\00:16:23.19 Lay Pastor See Nay also works with Saw 00:16:23.22\00:16:27.26 as they visit members and seek to reach out 00:16:27.29\00:16:29.53 to the needs of the Karen people 00:16:29.56\00:16:31.66 in Minneapolis and St. Paul. 00:16:31.69\00:16:34.95 Please pray for the Refugee Outreach Ministry 00:16:34.98\00:16:37.81 of the North American Division as it strives to reach out 00:16:37.84\00:16:41.75 to the growing refugee population in North America. 00:16:41.78\00:16:46.18 Currently there are more than 00:16:46.21\00:16:48.14 three million refugees in North America, 00:16:48.17\00:16:51.71 making it a ratio of three refugees 00:16:51.74\00:16:54.83 for each Seventh-day Adventist member in this division. 00:16:54.86\00:16:58.91 Your faithful support of the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:16:58.94\00:17:02.72 will help to reach these people as they strive 00:17:02.75\00:17:05.40 to rebuild their lives and find hope for the future. 00:17:05.43\00:17:12.29 Well, it's good to see Terri, 00:17:12.32\00:17:13.35 that a special offering was collected 00:17:13.38\00:17:15.20 to try to help with this ministry. 00:17:15.23\00:17:16.98 It's a tremendous blessing. Yeah. 00:17:17.01\00:17:19.18 Now the lady in the story, Blia, 00:17:19.21\00:17:22.29 who sacrificed so her child could have Christian education, 00:17:22.32\00:17:25.84 can you tell us a bit more about her? 00:17:25.87\00:17:28.13 Blia is an incredible story, she was an orphan, 00:17:28.16\00:17:31.42 she lived in refugee camp 00:17:31.45\00:17:35.38 and oh, I wish I could go into the details 00:17:35.41\00:17:39.05 but she at one point 00:17:39.08\00:17:45.07 came face to face with a cobra. 00:17:45.10\00:17:48.49 She didn't know even the Mong word for God 00:17:48.52\00:17:51.65 but in Mong culture they believe 00:17:51.68\00:17:53.58 that the owner of the sky made everything. 00:17:53.61\00:17:56.86 And so she stepped up on a log 00:17:56.89\00:18:00.56 and saw a cobra coming across. 00:18:00.59\00:18:04.11 She silently cried out, sky, help me. 00:18:04.14\00:18:08.43 Short for, owner of the sky, help me. 00:18:08.46\00:18:11.43 And people didn't believe her story 00:18:11.46\00:18:13.59 till they went and they saw the grass 00:18:13.62\00:18:19.05 and what a big cobra it had been and they said, 00:18:19.08\00:18:21.93 you wouldn't be alive if the sky, 00:18:21.96\00:18:24.46 the owner of the sky hadn't helped you. 00:18:24.49\00:18:26.94 And through her life she always wondered 00:18:26.97\00:18:29.50 why she had such a hard life, 00:18:29.53\00:18:30.99 she ended up being forced to marry someone 00:18:31.02\00:18:34.05 she-- very young, came to the States, 00:18:34.08\00:18:37.46 he left her for another woman. 00:18:37.49\00:18:41.87 So many things happened, she got so sick 00:18:41.90\00:18:44.32 they were making funeral arrangements 00:18:44.35\00:18:46.83 but we have just been called to reach out 00:18:46.86\00:18:49.11 to the Mong in that area 00:18:49.14\00:18:50.17 and a couple of our members discovered her 00:18:50.20\00:18:52.89 and after work every day they would go pray for her. 00:18:52.92\00:18:55.96 And they discovered one woman 00:18:55.99\00:19:00.24 well, I should be able to pray for her 00:19:00.27\00:19:02.75 and maybe she could hold something down. 00:19:02.78\00:19:07.51 And so she prayed for her, gave her some rice 00:19:07.54\00:19:09.46 and she was able to hold it down gradually. 00:19:09.49\00:19:12.37 She improved, people said, 00:19:12.40\00:19:14.24 let's do spirit ceremony and she said, no. 00:19:14.27\00:19:16.68 She had been learning Bible and she said, 00:19:16.71\00:19:18.05 I am gonna live with God and die with Him. 00:19:18.08\00:19:20.95 And she came to do gardening at our at our place 00:19:20.98\00:19:26.56 and she ended up filling four freezers 00:19:26.59\00:19:30.46 full of produce in one summer, 00:19:30.49\00:19:32.58 two freezers for her and two for our family. 00:19:32.61\00:19:35.34 She's an incredible woman and she is so thrilled. 00:19:35.37\00:19:37.78 Now she is making DVDs in her language 00:19:37.81\00:19:41.58 on a myriad of topics just to share 00:19:41.61\00:19:44.58 with the people in her ESL class. 00:19:44.61\00:19:46.90 She's an incredible woman who still has physical effects 00:19:46.93\00:19:51.90 in her experience but it's just on fire for God. 00:19:51.93\00:19:56.28 Now, many of our viewers are thinking, 00:19:56.31\00:19:58.38 well, yeah, maybe these people have not been on my radar 00:19:58.41\00:20:02.65 that I just have not seen them 00:20:02.68\00:20:04.92 maybe through their eyes of God that I should. 00:20:04.95\00:20:07.13 Where can we start in our communities 00:20:07.16\00:20:09.32 to minister to these people? 00:20:09.35\00:20:12.00 Well, you may be able to meet some of them at store 00:20:12.03\00:20:16.74 or-- but a good place to start is to just go online 00:20:16.77\00:20:21.44 and type refugees and the name of your town. 00:20:21.47\00:20:24.74 And you will usually come up with a refugee organization. 00:20:24.77\00:20:28.28 There are very few, I don't think 00:20:28.31\00:20:30.62 we have any cities without some refugees 00:20:30.65\00:20:34.25 of some language group and I got a call 00:20:34.28\00:20:37.10 from the Panhandle of Oklahoma 00:20:37.13\00:20:40.67 that there's a refugee group that I never heard of. 00:20:40.70\00:20:43.54 So there are different groups in different places. 00:20:43.57\00:20:47.35 Checking with a Refugee Assistance Organization 00:20:47.38\00:20:52.42 can really give you a window into 00:20:52.45\00:20:54.27 who is in your specific community 00:20:54.30\00:20:56.85 and if you need additional help 00:20:56.88\00:20:59.29 I'm happy to help you do some research. 00:20:59.32\00:21:03.87 And for more information 00:21:03.90\00:21:04.99 that they go to your website at RefugeeMinistries.org. 00:21:05.02\00:21:08.59 Yes. Yeah. 00:21:08.62\00:21:09.65 Now, we know that these people are very special in God's sight 00:21:09.68\00:21:12.88 and we read the Old Testament in how God talks about 00:21:12.91\00:21:16.08 the alien within your midst 00:21:16.11\00:21:17.42 and how we need to treat them. 00:21:17.45\00:21:20.51 Is there some way that we can help 00:21:20.54\00:21:24.46 these people financially, is that what they need or what? 00:21:24.49\00:21:28.71 That would be a tremendous help especially with educating-- 00:21:28.74\00:21:31.96 giving their children a Christian education. 00:21:31.99\00:21:34.84 Another huge need is for church planters. 00:21:34.87\00:21:39.02 People who can go and serve them spiritually 00:21:39.05\00:21:43.79 as well as of course these people also help them 00:21:43.82\00:21:46.15 with all kinds of other needs. 00:21:46.18\00:21:48.21 We're beginning to partner with conferences 00:21:48.24\00:21:51.96 across the North American Division 00:21:51.99\00:21:53.62 to provide church planters 00:21:53.65\00:21:55.65 for these different organizations. 00:21:55.68\00:21:57.03 In fact, some other 13th Sabbath Offering 00:21:57.06\00:21:59.82 is going to that but to donate, 00:21:59.85\00:22:03.87 you can donate to the North American Division 00:22:03.90\00:22:06.59 and specify for ARIM, A-R-I-M 00:22:06.62\00:22:10.05 short for Adventist Refugee and Immigrant Ministries. 00:22:10.08\00:22:13.53 Fantastic. 00:22:13.56\00:22:14.84 Terri, thank you so much for joining us today. 00:22:14.87\00:22:16.89 I appreciate it very much. Thank you for having me. 00:22:16.92\00:22:19.49 And viewers at home, what a tremendous challenge 00:22:19.52\00:22:23.05 this is to us to remember the strangers among us, 00:22:23.08\00:22:27.00 people who have no home. 00:22:27.03\00:22:30.18 I think that God calls all of us 00:22:30.21\00:22:32.31 to open up our eyes to the needs 00:22:32.34\00:22:34.96 around us in our own community. 00:22:34.99\00:22:36.71 So don't forget to go to RefugeeMinistries.org 00:22:36.74\00:22:40.03 and please pray for this ministry, 00:22:40.06\00:22:41.83 pray for Terri, pray for the church planters
