come to religious meetings

been sending out pioneers

families, a lot of families

really hurting and down,

there's drugs here.

There was a crack
house right across the street

that they did a
raid on last summer,

we had a couple of
people that were murdered here

down the Street not too long ago

and so this neighborhood
is a little bit rough.

For more than ten
years, a small church plant

in the heart of
Hagerstown, Maryland,

in one of the tougher
neighborhoods in town.

The day I saw her
she just seemed to be

depressed about everything,

and I just felt, I
guess God telling me

to invite her to our church

and I with no
idea what would happen.

Delores came to
church that first Sabbath

and found something
that would change her life.

Well, Delores came in.

I can remember the first day

she walked into
the back of our church

and she was pulling a
little oxygen tank with her

and she was stooped over
almost completely bent over

and she had no
color in her face.

She sat in the back row
00:04:44.18\00:04:46.55
and she felt asleep
half the time she was there

and then we just
began seeing her change,

we began seeing her participate

and we began
seeing her just come alive

as we would talk with her
and share with her and slowly

but surely God began to
heal her in a lot of ways.

Delores had been
struggling with alcohol.

attending a recovery group

and had turned her life around.

But something was missing,

FaithStep and a church home

on her faith in Jesus

feel so comfortable in

because I had that issue,

then I started to recover.

The walls of this shelter
give them a place to stay

stay here also learn

how to find help in the Bible
by learning to rely on Jesus.

And then I do a
Bible study class with them

and do discipleship to help them

learn to grow
in Christ and walk,

walk in a healthy way

this heightened awareness

needs to become a reality.

because people live
there and that we need

to have
opportunities to show if them

were they can have access
to a church were they live.

You know, first
I taught, you know,

that every church
will want to do this

and then I
discovered that most churches

are some are
resisting to planting churches

unfortunately and they
give various reasons, you know,

its gonna pack for finances
or we are gonna lose leaders
00:09:56.13\00:09:59.03
or we are gonna lose
fellowship with each other.
00:09:59.06\00:10:01.28
And so really I discovered that

the important
thing is for the leader

to catch a vision
for church planting

so that they can lead
the Church in that direction.

And so I began
investing in leaders

and giving them a
vision for a church planting

and sharing that
passion with them

and they got
very excited about it.

Great, so what
happened in Texas?

Well, we began
become a very focus

with your church plants prior
to being attention about it

we were planting in Texas

about two and two
and half churches a year

was the average
and that first year
00:10:30.68\00:10:33.58
that we really began
focusing intentional on planting

we planted 15 churches.
00:10:36.90\00:10:38.78
And so we discovered just
simply by being intentional

we were able to
increase dramatically

the number of
churches that we planted.

Now is this
something that is best

left to pastors
to plant churches?

Well, I think if we
were depending on pastors

to plant with our strategy
it would not have gone very far.

It's just simply
too cost prohibitive.

We were able to 9
years with Gods blessing

to plant 114
churches there in Texas

and the average went to
over 12 churches a year.

And so but that was
done-- majority of those

were done by
laypeople planting churches.

These are people
who catch the vision

that I can be involved in
starting new congregation?

And one of the exciting
things about it was that

we were able partner pastors
as coaches for the layperson

as they were using
planting the church.

So they had support

when they had
somebody that can help them

move through the process
of getting the church planted.

that the experience

Well, I have a my
roots are in Texas

I was born there and my
families were very poor area

North East of Dallas
little town of Wolfe City,

population is very small.
00:11:50.69\00:11:52.80
Here I'm one-year-old that,
00:11:52.83\00:11:54.78
you know,
looking like Texan there
00:11:54.81\00:11:57.01
and but in any case Wolfe City
is a little very small community
00:11:57.04\00:12:03.02
and I was visiting
there just to see my family
00:12:03.05\00:12:07.81
and I began when
there was any chance
00:12:07.84\00:12:10.65
that they could ever be
a church in this community.

There is no
Adventist church in our close

but I did not go
to the conference

exactly to commit and
say we can plant a church

and send a pastor Wolfe City?

Because nobody would do that.
It's a depressed community.

There's no
resources there and so,

it that burden came in
the heart of some many people

and they went to this community

and one lady simply
worked there during week

and she invited
her friends and say

And so I was able to
be there guest speaker

believe we would have a picture

And in fact the mayor of
the city welcome into town

they started ten Bible
studies in this community

and its depresses as
a community was there

is not a thrust over there.

And so, they actually opened up

a thrift store and
their first Baptism

that lady now
lands in thrift store.

But the exciting part for my
family is they befriended them.

like they visiting

and in fact my
oldest aunt 80-years-old

where he has been ministering.

Then I got a call
today on the way here

of a lady who wants to--

her and her
family want to relocate

where they are most
needed to do something for God.

So it's exciting to
see people responding.

Well, yeah, just a
month or so ago in Cambodia

I was talking to two girls

via translator I
guess 14, 15 years of age

and I said have
you ever heard of Jesus

and they looked at each other

and then looked at
me and shock their head.

And we know that theoretically

but actually experience
just like hit you here.

And there's another side
of that too we've got people

who have been
Christians and they left.

I was in the city of Singapore

and Rick Kidder and I were there

and we took a taxi to try

and find some
food in the market.

And Rick went in
there to buy some fruit

and I was sitting in the
taxi talking to the taxi driver.

And as we are talking he said

something sort
of out of the blue

he said I used to be Christian.

And as we talked I
heard more about his story

and he said yeah,
I was a Christian,

my children and
still Christians he said

but, you know, I came
from another back ground

and when my mother
died-- I was a Christian

but when my mother
died we had her body,
00:18:49.62\00:18:52.28
you know, in the family
room, they do that three days
00:18:52.31\00:18:55.27
there's sort of watch
over the body for three days.
00:18:55.30\00:18:57.86
So during the night I
was sleeping in that room

and I was endorsing off
and he said I had a dream.

I dreamt that
something was grabbing

my leg and pulling me
towards my mother coffin.

And he said,
when I woke up he said

I realized that my
mother was telling me

that I needed to
get back to the religion

of my ancestors he said so.

So I'm no longer a Christian,
I used to be a Christian.

There are forces out
there they are very much

would like to see, you
know, Christianity disappear.

And you know,
sometimes we don't understand

what a huge cultural
leap it is for people

to even start
thinking about Christianity

because from the
culture they come from

if you're going to
be a proper Cambodian

then you can be a Buddhist.

If you're gonna be
a proper Thai person

you're gonna be a Buddhist
and to become a Christian

you're rejecting your heritage.

Yeah, well, and then you
go into places like Europe

and the post Christian,
the post-modern areas.

I mean, we were there talking

with some of the

and I know that we heard
a story from Willy Aronsen

who was there, you know,

and you told that one so well.

Well, yeah, our

in Stockholm there for
Sweden he was on a train trip.

Got on the train
and the person sitting

young woman in her 20s

and he recognized the face

because she's often
prominently on the cover

of popular
magazines in the news stands.

So he got talking to her,

she is a-- into
fashion and popular cultural

and she blogs on the internet

and everybody in
Sweden knows her.

So he is sitting there and
thinks what an opportunity.

And so he starts talking to her.

She discovers that
he is a Christian pastor

and she looks at
him and says, you know,

I had heard that there
were Christians living in Sweden

but you are the first one
I have ever met in her 20s.

So this is the sort of challenge

Window through to the secular

and post-modern stage.

we have to change
some of our thinking

are trying to reach.

Yeah, and I think
that we are seeing that,

tremendous growth in areas

a challenge there

how do they
become self sustaining

And that's one thing
that I've noticed is that

we often equate
poverty with mission

when it's not always the case.

You have a lot of Christians
in some of these pray areas

but you go into the wealthy
area of Bangkok and Sweden.
