After many years of a rich Christian history 00:00:07.81\00:00:11.71 Western Europe has now become a post Christian society. 00:00:11.74\00:00:16.34 What a tremendous mission field it is today. 00:00:16.37\00:00:19.34 From Stockholm, Sweden I am Gary Krause 00:00:19.37\00:00:21.45 and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots. 00:00:21.48\00:00:23.47 Just before He went up to heaven 00:00:28.12\00:00:30.59 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:30.62\00:00:33.53 He gave us a mission. 00:00:33.56\00:00:36.18 Jesus said "go, go onto all the world 00:00:36.21\00:00:41.09 telling them of His love." 00:00:41.12\00:00:43.67 This is our mission, this is our Global Mission. 00:00:43.70\00:00:47.85 Hello and welcome to Global Mission Snapshots, 00:00:53.19\00:00:55.63 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:55.66\00:00:57.37 When we hear the words mission field 00:00:57.40\00:00:59.84 many of us tend to think of distinct jungle, 00:00:59.87\00:01:02.62 tropical islands, rural villages 00:01:02.65\00:01:05.35 but on today's program we will see 00:01:05.38\00:01:07.43 that the mission field is now a whole lot more complex. 00:01:07.46\00:01:10.91 In fact, our biggest mission challenge today 00:01:10.94\00:01:13.65 is the growing urban areas of the world. 00:01:13.68\00:01:16.73 Post Christians societies such as Europe, Australia, 00:01:16.76\00:01:19.96 New Zealand and increasingly North America 00:01:19.99\00:01:22.97 are very challenging. 00:01:23.00\00:01:25.81 No longer can be assumed 00:01:25.84\00:01:26.87 that people will come to religious meetings 00:01:26.90\00:01:28.29 we hold in churches or homes. 00:01:28.32\00:01:30.96 We need to go were they are. 00:01:30.99\00:01:33.99 For more than 20 years 00:01:34.02\00:01:35.51 Global Mission has been sending out pioneers 00:01:35.54\00:01:38.32 to plant new congregations. 00:01:38.35\00:01:40.91 They live and work among the people. 00:01:40.94\00:01:43.16 They know the language, they know the culture 00:01:43.19\00:01:45.65 and they become part of the community. 00:01:45.68\00:01:48.36 Eventually they invite their new found friends 00:01:48.39\00:01:50.95 and neighbors to begin studying the Bible 00:01:50.98\00:01:53.85 and worshiping with them. 00:01:53.88\00:01:55.64 This is what we call church planting, 00:01:55.67\00:01:58.32 starting new congregations 00:01:58.35\00:02:00.30 in un-entered areas or people groups. 00:02:00.33\00:02:03.06 Today we will be talking with Tom Evans 00:02:03.09\00:02:05.48 an experienced church planter and now heads up church planting 00:02:05.51\00:02:09.94 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America. 00:02:09.97\00:02:13.20 We will also talk with Rick Kajiura 00:02:13.23\00:02:14.95 about mission challenges around the world. 00:02:14.98\00:02:17.62 But first up let's visit a church plant in Maryland 00:02:17.65\00:02:21.59 right here in the United States. 00:02:21.62\00:02:25.02 There's a lot of people here 00:02:25.05\00:02:26.77 that are in specialty housing, section 8 housing, 00:02:26.80\00:02:32.13 where they get help from the government. 00:02:32.16\00:02:34.40 A lot of people just living from paycheck to paycheck, 00:02:34.43\00:02:39.31 a lot of dysfunctional families, a lot of families 00:02:39.34\00:02:44.01 that are just really, really hurting and down, 00:02:44.04\00:02:49.00 there's drugs here. 00:02:49.03\00:02:51.18 There was a crack house right across the street 00:02:51.21\00:02:53.75 that they did a raid on last summer, 00:02:53.78\00:02:59.14 we had a couple of people that were murdered here 00:02:59.17\00:03:02.06 down the Street not too long ago 00:03:02.09\00:03:04.21 and so this neighborhood is a little bit rough. 00:03:04.24\00:03:12.06 For more than ten years, a small church plant 00:03:12.09\00:03:15.03 in the heart of Hagerstown, Maryland, 00:03:15.06\00:03:17.34 has been reaching out to people 00:03:17.37\00:03:18.70 in one of the tougher neighborhoods in town. 00:03:18.73\00:03:22.09 Inside the small house where they meet, 00:03:22.12\00:03:24.52 the fellowship is warm, the hugs are heartfelt, 00:03:24.55\00:03:27.95 and the food is hot and delicious. 00:03:27.98\00:03:30.68 This is FaithStep. 00:03:30.71\00:03:33.67 Jeannie Ramos and her team at the FaithStep church plant 00:03:33.70\00:03:37.01 are reaching out to people in this neighborhood, 00:03:37.04\00:03:39.93 people who might not be comfortable stepping 00:03:39.96\00:03:42.08 into an Adventist Church on Sabbath morning. 00:03:42.11\00:03:45.27 Welcometo FaithStep. 00:03:45.30\00:03:47.81 It's a good day today 00:03:47.84\00:03:49.04 because the Lord has made this day for us. 00:03:49.07\00:03:51.57 Delores is one of those 00:03:51.60\00:03:53.41 who has found a church home in Faithstep. 00:03:53.44\00:03:55.85 She was invited by her eye doctor, Eric Bergmann 00:03:55.88\00:03:59.54 who has been part of Faithstep since it started. 00:03:59.57\00:04:02.81 The day I saw her she just seemed to be 00:04:02.84\00:04:05.08 somewhat depressed about everything, 00:04:05.11\00:04:09.06 and I just felt, I guess God telling me 00:04:09.09\00:04:14.27 to invite her to our church 00:04:14.30\00:04:16.35 and I with no idea what would happen. 00:04:16.38\00:04:20.66 Delores came to church that first Sabbath 00:04:20.69\00:04:23.49 and found something that would change her life. 00:04:23.52\00:04:26.99 Well, Delores came in. 00:04:27.02\00:04:29.29 I can remember the first day 00:04:29.32\00:04:30.95 she walked into the back of our church 00:04:30.98\00:04:33.02 and she was pulling a little oxygen tank with her 00:04:33.05\00:04:36.39 and she was stooped over almost completely bent over 00:04:36.42\00:04:41.11 and she had no color in her face. 00:04:41.14\00:04:44.15 She sat in the back row 00:04:44.18\00:04:46.55 and she felt asleep half the time she was there 00:04:46.58\00:04:50.79 and then we just began seeing her change, 00:04:50.82\00:04:55.26 we began seeing her participate 00:04:55.29\00:04:59.10 and we began seeing her just come alive 00:04:59.13\00:05:03.25 as we would talk with her and share with her and slowly 00:05:03.28\00:05:07.60 but surely God began to heal her in a lot of ways. 00:05:07.63\00:05:12.96 Delores had been struggling with alcohol. 00:05:12.99\00:05:16.19 She had started attending a recovery group 00:05:16.22\00:05:18.45 and had turned her life around. 00:05:18.48\00:05:20.67 But something was missing, 00:05:20.70\00:05:22.94 that's when she found FaithStep and a church home 00:05:22.97\00:05:26.47 where she could lean on her faith in Jesus 00:05:26.50\00:05:28.77 and her new church family. 00:05:28.80\00:05:31.42 Now that I'm in the church group 00:05:31.45\00:05:34.40 I don't just only attend as many meetings 00:05:34.43\00:05:37.50 because mostly if I need anything 00:05:37.53\00:05:41.16 my church family's right there. 00:05:41.19\00:05:43.83 Although Sabbath morning services are special to Delores, 00:05:43.86\00:05:47.79 it's the warmth of Christian love and the acceptance 00:05:47.82\00:05:51.17 she's found there that really makes a difference to Delores 00:05:51.20\00:05:54.26 and others who found God's love at FaithStep. 00:05:54.29\00:05:58.65 My church family has made me 00:05:58.68\00:06:02.24 feel so comfortable in that not criticizing me 00:06:02.27\00:06:06.96 or anything or looking down on me 00:06:06.99\00:06:10.21 because I had that issue, you know, I can call and say, 00:06:10.24\00:06:14.24 you know I'm really feeling down today 00:06:14.27\00:06:16.63 and that blah, blah, and they'll all say, 00:06:16.66\00:06:19.66 well, why don't you come on over 00:06:19.69\00:06:21.05 or they'll just talk to me on the phone for a little bit 00:06:21.08\00:06:25.22 and it's been very helpful. 00:06:25.25\00:06:27.26 Next door to where FaithStep meets is an upstairs apartment 00:06:27.29\00:06:31.19 that is home to a special ministry. 00:06:31.22\00:06:33.93 Here FaithStep partners with other 00:06:33.96\00:06:35.90 community organizations to provide a safe 00:06:35.93\00:06:38.98 and comfortable place where women can stay 00:06:39.01\00:06:41.65 while trying to get their lives back together. 00:06:41.68\00:06:44.73 A place they call Hannah's house. 00:06:44.76\00:06:47.84 One resident shared her story in hopes 00:06:47.87\00:06:50.33 it can help others turn their lives around. 00:06:50.36\00:06:53.72 When I was at the age of 12, 00:06:53.75\00:06:55.70 I started dabbling in drugs and alcohol 00:06:55.73\00:06:58.29 and they made me feel like I belonged 00:06:58.32\00:07:00.64 and I thought I had found what I needed. 00:07:00.67\00:07:03.94 It just led into a 33 year addiction with drugs and alcohol 00:07:03.97\00:07:08.94 and I was so far gone that I had just lost all hope 00:07:08.97\00:07:12.32 and it was until I was totally broken 00:07:12.35\00:07:15.02 and I asked God for help, then I started to recover. 00:07:15.05\00:07:19.86 The walls of this shelter give them a place to stay 00:07:19.89\00:07:23.27 but the women who stay here also learn 00:07:23.30\00:07:25.83 how to find help in the Bible by learning to rely on Jesus. 00:07:25.86\00:07:31.00 And then I do a Bible study class with them 00:07:31.03\00:07:34.36 and do discipleship to help them 00:07:34.39\00:07:38.19 learn to grow in Christ and walk, 00:07:38.22\00:07:42.53 walk in a healthy way as a believer in Christ. 00:07:42.56\00:07:47.74 You have to have this heightened awareness 00:07:47.77\00:07:49.00 of what He wants for you and how to live for Him 00:07:49.03\00:07:51.90 and it's in His will not your will 00:07:51.93\00:07:54.72 because left to my own devices I know I would screw up 00:07:54.75\00:07:58.19 so I just take it's the next level 00:07:58.22\00:08:00.06 and take the high road live for Him. 00:08:00.09\00:08:01.89 It's easier to stay sober. 00:08:01.92\00:08:03.88 FaithStep is more than a church service. 00:08:03.91\00:08:06.95 It's a holistic ministry 00:08:06.98\00:08:08.78 that touches every aspect of a person's life. 00:08:08.81\00:08:12.35 It's a 24/7 ministry that blesses those 00:08:12.38\00:08:15.75 who give and those who receive. 00:08:15.78\00:08:18.74 As the time went by, I started realizing 00:08:18.77\00:08:22.09 I'm not helping them, they're helping me. 00:08:22.12\00:08:25.32 They make me grow spiritually, I see more answers to prayer, 00:08:25.35\00:08:28.56 I see wonderful things happening. 00:08:28.59\00:08:31.26 As FaithStep reaches out to people in Hagerstown, 00:08:31.29\00:08:34.69 it also has an impact on the lives of the people 00:08:34.72\00:08:37.40 who are trying to help. 00:08:37.43\00:08:39.72 Please pray for the FaithStep group 00:08:39.75\00:08:41.93 as they minister to each other and to their community. 00:08:41.96\00:08:45.94 And thank you for supporting 00:08:45.97\00:08:48.01 Adventist Mission around the world. 00:08:48.04\00:08:51.77 There is a certain energy a certain vitality 00:08:51.80\00:08:55.02 that you see and experience 00:08:55.05\00:08:56.97 when you attend their church plant 00:08:57.00\00:08:59.76 because they are 100 % focused on mission and on the community. 00:08:59.79\00:09:04.09 This is dear to the heart of my next guest 00:09:04.12\00:09:06.18 pastor Tom Evans. 00:09:06.21\00:09:07.70 Tom, you head up the church planting side 00:09:07.73\00:09:11.34 of the church here in North America, 00:09:11.37\00:09:13.47 what is church planting so important to you? 00:09:13.50\00:09:17.25 There is quote that says that 00:09:17.28\00:09:19.25 we need to see jets of light in every city of village 00:09:19.28\00:09:22.70 and I believe that this needs to become a reality. 00:09:22.73\00:09:26.27 And so we need Churches in various communities 00:09:26.30\00:09:29.91 because people live there and that we need 00:09:29.94\00:09:32.25 to have opportunities to show if them 00:09:32.28\00:09:33.64 were they can have access to a church were they live. 00:09:33.67\00:09:36.70 Now if I send you as you headed up 00:09:36.73\00:09:38.95 church planting in the Texas region 00:09:38.98\00:09:41.97 tell us about that experience. 00:09:42.00\00:09:44.23 You know, first I taught, you know, 00:09:44.26\00:09:46.09 that every church will want to do this 00:09:46.12\00:09:48.80 and then I discovered that most churches 00:09:48.83\00:09:50.43 are some are resisting to planting churches 00:09:50.46\00:09:52.61 unfortunately and they give various reasons, you know, 00:09:52.64\00:09:56.10 its gonna pack for finances or we are gonna lose leaders 00:09:56.13\00:09:59.03 or we are gonna lose fellowship with each other. 00:09:59.06\00:10:01.28 And so really I discovered that 00:10:01.31\00:10:02.90 the important thing is for the leader 00:10:02.93\00:10:04.83 to catch a vision for church planting 00:10:04.86\00:10:06.25 so that they can lead the Church in that direction. 00:10:06.28\00:10:09.09 And so I began investing in leaders 00:10:09.12\00:10:11.98 and giving them a vision for a church planting 00:10:12.01\00:10:14.90 and sharing that passion with them 00:10:14.93\00:10:16.62 and they got very excited about it. 00:10:16.65\00:10:18.55 Great, so what happened in Texas? 00:10:18.58\00:10:21.20 Well, we began become a very focus 00:10:21.23\00:10:24.23 with your church plants prior to being attention about it 00:10:24.26\00:10:27.01 we were planting in Texas 00:10:27.04\00:10:28.07 about two and two and half churches a year 00:10:28.10\00:10:30.65 was the average and that first year 00:10:30.68\00:10:33.58 that we really began focusing intentional on planting 00:10:33.61\00:10:36.87 we planted 15 churches. 00:10:36.90\00:10:38.78 And so we discovered just simply by being intentional 00:10:38.81\00:10:42.57 we were able to increase dramatically 00:10:42.60\00:10:44.65 the number of churches that we planted. 00:10:44.68\00:10:46.72 Now is this something that is best 00:10:46.75\00:10:49.69 left to pastors to plant churches? 00:10:49.72\00:10:53.44 Well, I think if we were depending on pastors 00:10:53.47\00:10:56.62 to plant with our strategy it would not have gone very far. 00:10:56.65\00:11:01.14 It's just simply too cost prohibitive. 00:11:01.17\00:11:03.90 We were able to 9 years with Gods blessing 00:11:03.93\00:11:06.30 to plant 114 churches there in Texas 00:11:06.33\00:11:08.77 and the average went to over 12 churches a year. 00:11:08.80\00:11:11.96 And so but that was done-- majority of those 00:11:11.99\00:11:14.71 were done by laypeople planting churches. 00:11:14.74\00:11:17.77 These are people who catch the vision 00:11:17.80\00:11:19.38 that I can be involved in starting new congregation? 00:11:19.41\00:11:23.35 And one of the exciting things about it was that 00:11:23.38\00:11:25.21 we were able partner pastors as coaches for the layperson 00:11:25.24\00:11:29.47 as they were using planting the church. 00:11:29.50\00:11:30.53 So they had support 00:11:30.56\00:11:31.76 when they had somebody that can help them 00:11:31.79\00:11:33.55 move through the process of getting the church planted. 00:11:33.58\00:11:36.08 Good, now tell me that the experience 00:11:36.11\00:11:38.15 of your family planting a church. 00:11:38.18\00:11:40.49 Well, I have a my roots are in Texas 00:11:40.52\00:11:43.63 I was born there and my families were very poor area 00:11:43.66\00:11:47.22 North East of Dallas little town of Wolfe City, 00:11:47.25\00:11:50.66 population is very small. 00:11:50.69\00:11:52.80 Here I'm one-year-old that, 00:11:52.83\00:11:54.78 you know, looking like Texan there 00:11:54.81\00:11:57.01 and but in any case Wolfe City is a little very small community 00:11:57.04\00:12:03.02 and I was visiting there just to see my family 00:12:03.05\00:12:07.81 and I began when there was any chance 00:12:07.84\00:12:10.65 that they could ever be a church in this community. 00:12:10.68\00:12:12.67 There is no Adventist church in our close 00:12:12.70\00:12:14.92 but I did not go to the conference 00:12:14.95\00:12:16.56 exactly to commit and say we can plant a church 00:12:16.59\00:12:18.42 and send a pastor Wolfe City? 00:12:18.45\00:12:20.21 Because nobody would do that. It's a depressed community. 00:12:20.24\00:12:23.64 There's no resources there and so, 00:12:23.67\00:12:27.05 it that burden came in the heart of some many people 00:12:27.08\00:12:30.72 and they went to this community 00:12:30.75\00:12:33.69 and one lady simply worked there during week 00:12:33.72\00:12:37.18 and she invited her friends and say 00:12:37.21\00:12:38.91 can we plant a church here? 00:12:38.94\00:12:40.26 And so I was able to be there guest speaker 00:12:40.29\00:12:43.40 believe we would have a picture coming on this a guest speaker 00:12:43.43\00:12:45.52 for the opening Sabbath. 00:12:45.55\00:12:47.29 And in fact the mayor of the city welcome into town 00:12:47.32\00:12:51.98 they started ten Bible studies in this community 00:12:52.01\00:12:54.91 and its depresses as a community was there 00:12:54.94\00:12:56.97 is not a thrust over there. 00:12:57.00\00:12:58.53 And so, they actually opened up 00:12:58.56\00:12:59.59 a thrift store and their first Baptism 00:12:59.62\00:13:01.66 that lady now lands in thrift store. 00:13:01.69\00:13:04.63 But the exciting part for my family is they befriended them. 00:13:04.66\00:13:07.49 like they visiting there in to my home 00:13:07.52\00:13:10.03 and in fact my oldest aunt 80-years-old 00:13:10.06\00:13:13.67 Em Marjorie has come to church 00:13:13.70\00:13:16.78 and she is accepted by Bible studies. 00:13:16.81\00:13:19.19 And so it's really need to see how lay church planting 00:13:19.22\00:13:22.23 impacted my own family. 00:13:22.26\00:13:23.44 Fantastic. 00:13:23.47\00:13:24.50 Now listen that yours have may say what like to do this, 00:13:24.53\00:13:28.69 where do you start? 00:13:28.72\00:13:30.78 Yeah, to start is to basically 00:13:30.81\00:13:34.50 know the God is calling me to do this 00:13:34.53\00:13:36.48 and there are some great resources now 00:13:36.51\00:13:38.05 that available just finish the church planting manual 00:13:38.08\00:13:41.23 that walk step by step on how to plant a church 00:13:41.26\00:13:44.70 and I think that would be a very helpful tool. 00:13:44.73\00:13:46.95 But we want to make sure we work on cooperation 00:13:46.98\00:13:48.89 of the pastors over the councils and see 00:13:48.92\00:13:51.73 what they can do come along our side and support 00:13:51.76\00:13:53.95 as we have a Church planting opportunity that realizes. 00:13:53.98\00:13:57.02 Now how can people contact you for these resources? 00:13:57.05\00:14:00.19 Probably the best place to find some excellent resources 00:14:00.22\00:14:03.04 is that the NADEI website 00:14:03.07\00:14:04.50 that's a North American Vision Evangelisms Institute NADEI.org 00:14:04.53\00:14:10.51 and there's a lot of Church planting 00:14:10.54\00:14:11.80 resources available there. 00:14:11.83\00:14:13.25 Fantastic. 00:14:13.28\00:14:14.33 Now, have you sensed that there is an interest 00:14:14.36\00:14:17.06 in church planting among church members? 00:14:17.09\00:14:19.30 Let me just share something happened just within last week. 00:14:19.33\00:14:22.23 There is a 10-year-old from Vermont 00:14:22.26\00:14:24.26 that wants to plant a church 00:14:24.29\00:14:26.05 and his parents are supportive. 00:14:26.08\00:14:27.11 He sat through all of my training, 00:14:27.14\00:14:28.35 got my manual and he is excited about it. 00:14:28.38\00:14:31.19 Then there is a gentleman who began a ministry in the box 00:14:31.22\00:14:34.48 and he had a very effective ministry for number of years 00:14:34.51\00:14:37.03 and he wants to plant a church right 00:14:37.06\00:14:38.52 where he has been ministering. 00:14:38.55\00:14:40.09 Then I got a call today on the way here 00:14:40.12\00:14:42.70 of a lady who wants to-- 00:14:42.73\00:14:44.03 her and her family want to relocate 00:14:44.06\00:14:46.35 where they are most needed to do something for God. 00:14:46.38\00:14:48.52 So it's exciting to see people responding. 00:14:48.55\00:14:50.97 Fantastic. 00:14:51.00\00:14:52.03 Tom, thanks so much for sharing with us today. 00:14:52.06\00:14:55.93 And viewers at home, church planting builds God's kingdom. 00:14:55.96\00:15:01.27 From mother churches who send out 00:15:01.30\00:15:03.00 people to plant new churches 00:15:03.03\00:15:04.42 that enriches and reinvigorates 00:15:04.45\00:15:06.24 and it invigorates our own experience to be involved. 00:15:06.27\00:15:09.68 But please pray for those involved in church planting. 00:15:09.71\00:15:12.55 It can be lonely, it can be challenging, 00:15:12.58\00:15:14.56 it can be very discouraging. 00:15:14.59\00:15:16.68 But if you would like to be involved 00:15:16.71\00:15:18.26 don't forget NADEI.org for more information. 00:15:18.29\00:15:20.99 When we talk about mission 00:16:01.37\00:16:03.20 we have a very human tendency to talk about 00:16:03.23\00:16:06.67 all the encouraging good things, 00:16:06.70\00:16:08.70 the mass baptisms, the churches are being planted. 00:16:08.73\00:16:12.69 I mean, it's good we need to thank God for that 00:16:12.72\00:16:15.43 but we also have to remind ourselves of the challenge. 00:16:15.46\00:16:18.77 And to help us do that Rick Kajiura has joined us. 00:16:18.80\00:16:21.47 Rick is the communication director for Adventist Mission. 00:16:21.50\00:16:24.87 Rick, tell us a little bit about 00:16:24.90\00:16:26.59 the mission challenge that still remains. 00:16:26.62\00:16:28.88 Well, you know, as you said a lot of times 00:16:28.91\00:16:30.51 we like to dwell on the success. 00:16:30.54\00:16:32.32 I think that's greater it encourages us. 00:16:32.35\00:16:34.71 You know, I hear people say, 00:16:34.74\00:16:35.83 you know, that the world is reached 00:16:35.86\00:16:37.34 we are doing really well. 00:16:37.37\00:16:38.77 The opinion from my office 00:16:38.80\00:16:40.43 the other was showing statistics it showed that, 00:16:40.46\00:16:42.91 you know, world population growth and church growth 00:16:42.94\00:16:45.31 are both-- during increasing 00:16:45.34\00:16:47.77 population is going faster than church goers 00:16:47.80\00:16:49.92 so you have a lot of work to do to reach the world. 00:16:49.95\00:16:54.77 I remember being in a church one time 00:16:54.80\00:16:56.34 and having a pastor say, you know, the world is reaching, 00:16:56.37\00:16:58.77 he held up another statistics of a church. 00:16:58.80\00:17:01.57 So you're catering member that's a tremendous challenge. 00:17:01.60\00:17:05.34 Now we see growth happening strongest in places 00:17:05.37\00:17:08.64 like the southern half of the continent of Africa. 00:17:08.67\00:17:12.07 Places like the Philippines, Central South America 00:17:12.10\00:17:15.73 where are some of the most challenging areas? 00:17:15.76\00:17:18.04 Well, there are still many areas of the 10/40 Window. 00:17:18.07\00:17:20.88 Which is? That is still challenging. 00:17:20.91\00:17:22.05 That is 10 degrees north latitude 00:17:22.08\00:17:24.43 to 40 degrees north latitude 00:17:24.46\00:17:26.33 which goes from North Africa all the way into Asia. 00:17:26.36\00:17:29.63 And into Middle East? 00:17:29.66\00:17:30.82 Composite to Middle East, yeah, in the middle of that. 00:17:30.85\00:17:33.03 That is still a huge challenge. 00:17:33.06\00:17:34.41 It's still now we've been talking about it for many, 00:17:34.44\00:17:36.71 many years but that's still one of the most challenging 00:17:36.74\00:17:39.52 areas of the fewest Christians. 00:17:39.55\00:17:41.46 Well, 60 percent of the world's population live there 00:17:41.49\00:17:43.72 and most of never even heard the name of Jesus. 00:17:43.75\00:17:46.12 Right, and you have been there 00:17:46.15\00:17:48.04 and talked to people and asked then, 00:17:48.07\00:17:50.25 you know, do you know who Jesus is? 00:17:50.28\00:17:51.36 Well, yeah, just a month or so ago in Cambodia 00:17:51.39\00:17:55.21 remember we are about the side of the road 00:17:55.24\00:17:56.65 I was talking to two girls 00:17:56.68\00:17:58.15 via translator I guess 14, 15 years of age 00:17:58.18\00:18:01.64 and I said have you ever heard of Jesus 00:18:01.67\00:18:04.77 and they looked at each other 00:18:04.80\00:18:05.83 and then looked at me and shock their head. 00:18:05.86\00:18:07.76 And we know that theoretically 00:18:07.79\00:18:09.62 but actually experience just like hit you here. 00:18:09.65\00:18:13.91 And there's another side of that too we've got people 00:18:13.94\00:18:16.31 who have been Christians and they left. 00:18:16.34\00:18:18.60 I was in the city of Singapore 00:18:18.63\00:18:21.49 and Rick Kidder and I were there 00:18:21.52\00:18:22.91 and we took a taxi to try 00:18:22.94\00:18:24.95 and find some food in the market. 00:18:24.98\00:18:26.86 And Rick went in there to buy some fruit 00:18:26.89\00:18:28.63 and I was sitting in the taxi talking to the taxi driver. 00:18:28.66\00:18:32.08 And as we are talking he said 00:18:32.11\00:18:33.98 something sort of out of the blue 00:18:34.01\00:18:35.04 he said I used to be Christian. 00:18:35.07\00:18:37.31 And as we talked I heard more about his story 00:18:37.34\00:18:40.20 and he said yeah, I was a Christian, 00:18:40.23\00:18:41.28 my children and still Christians he said 00:18:41.31\00:18:42.98 but, you know, I came from another back ground 00:18:43.01\00:18:46.25 and when my mother died-- I was a Christian 00:18:46.28\00:18:49.59 but when my mother died we had her body, 00:18:49.62\00:18:52.28 you know, in the family room, they do that three days 00:18:52.31\00:18:55.27 there's sort of watch over the body for three days. 00:18:55.30\00:18:57.86 So during the night I was sleeping in that room 00:18:57.89\00:18:59.78 and I was endorsing off and he said I had a dream. 00:18:59.81\00:19:03.08 I dreamt that something was grabbing 00:19:03.11\00:19:05.49 my leg and pulling me towards my mother coffin. 00:19:05.52\00:19:08.49 And he said, when I woke up he said 00:19:08.52\00:19:09.69 I realized that my mother was telling me 00:19:09.72\00:19:11.94 that I needed to get back to the religion 00:19:11.97\00:19:13.44 of my ancestors he said so. 00:19:13.47\00:19:15.61 So I'm no longer a Christian, I used to be a Christian. 00:19:15.64\00:19:19.35 There are forces out there they are very much 00:19:19.38\00:19:20.91 would like to see, you know, Christianity disappear. 00:19:20.94\00:19:25.28 And you know, sometimes we don't understand 00:19:25.31\00:19:27.84 what a huge cultural leap it is for people 00:19:27.87\00:19:31.56 to even start thinking about Christianity 00:19:31.59\00:19:33.63 because from the culture they come from 00:19:33.66\00:19:36.25 if you're going to be a proper Cambodian 00:19:36.28\00:19:39.82 then you can be a Buddhist. 00:19:39.85\00:19:40.88 If you're gonna be a proper Thai person 00:19:40.91\00:19:42.71 you're gonna be a Buddhist and to become a Christian 00:19:42.74\00:19:45.20 you're rejecting your heritage. 00:19:45.23\00:19:47.91 Yeah, well, and then you go into places like Europe 00:19:47.94\00:19:50.27 and the post Christian, the post-modern areas. 00:19:50.30\00:19:53.30 I mean, we were there talking 00:19:53.33\00:19:54.66 with some of the church leaders there 00:19:54.69\00:19:57.56 and I know that we heard a story from Willy Aronsen 00:19:57.59\00:20:00.65 who was there, you know, 00:20:00.68\00:20:02.23 and you told that one so well. 00:20:02.26\00:20:03.65 Well, yeah, our Global Mission coordinator 00:20:03.68\00:20:06.18 in Stockholm there for Sweden he was on a train trip. 00:20:06.21\00:20:11.13 Got on the train and the person sitting 00:20:11.16\00:20:13.15 next to him was a young woman in her 20s 00:20:13.18\00:20:15.97 and he recognized the face 00:20:16.00\00:20:18.30 because she's often prominently on the cover 00:20:18.33\00:20:21.57 of popular magazines in the news stands. 00:20:21.60\00:20:24.43 So he got talking to her, 00:20:24.46\00:20:25.69 she is a-- into fashion and popular cultural 00:20:25.72\00:20:28.66 and she blogs on the internet 00:20:28.69\00:20:29.98 and everybody in Sweden knows her. 00:20:30.01\00:20:32.49 So he is sitting there and thinks what an opportunity. 00:20:32.52\00:20:34.53 And so he starts talking to her. 00:20:34.56\00:20:35.79 She discovers that he is a Christian pastor 00:20:35.82\00:20:38.75 and she looks at him and says, you know, 00:20:38.78\00:20:42.01 I had heard that there were Christians living in Sweden 00:20:42.04\00:20:45.20 but you are the first one I have ever met in her 20s. 00:20:45.23\00:20:49.94 So this is the sort of challenge 00:20:49.97\00:20:52.15 we face from the 10/40 Window through to the secular 00:20:52.18\00:20:54.87 and post-modern stage. 00:20:54.90\00:20:55.93 Did you invite here too. Oh, yeah. 00:20:55.96\00:20:57.81 And of course, Willy saw this as a tremendous opportunity. 00:20:57.84\00:21:00.30 He spoke to her the entire trip. 00:21:00.33\00:21:02.82 At the end he gave her his card 00:21:02.85\00:21:04.32 and said if you ever-- if you ever need a pastor 00:21:04.35\00:21:07.26 I'm here for you. What an opportunity. 00:21:07.29\00:21:10.87 You know, when we think about both places 00:21:10.90\00:21:13.70 they are equally mission fields even though a lot of places 00:21:13.73\00:21:17.03 we traditionally thought as of mission fields 00:21:17.06\00:21:19.11 like Southern Africa they are doing very well 00:21:19.14\00:21:22.00 and yet you going to North Africa, 00:21:22.03\00:21:23.49 Europe, the Middle East 00:21:23.52\00:21:25.28 we have to change some of our thinking 00:21:25.31\00:21:26.85 as to who we are trying to reach. 00:21:26.88\00:21:28.82 Yeah, and I think that we are seeing that, 00:21:28.85\00:21:32.95 we see tremendous growth in areas 00:21:32.98\00:21:34.45 where the church is impoverished 00:21:34.48\00:21:36.15 and so you have a challenge there 00:21:36.18\00:21:38.02 how do they become self sustaining 00:21:38.05\00:21:40.33 when people are earning a dollar a day 00:21:40.36\00:21:42.02 if they are lucky. 00:21:42.05\00:21:43.08 And that's one thing that I've noticed is that 00:21:43.11\00:21:44.42 we often equate poverty with mission 00:21:44.45\00:21:47.46 when it's not always the case. 00:21:47.49\00:21:49.65 You have a lot of Christians in some of these pray areas 00:21:49.68\00:21:52.74 but you go into the wealthy area of Bangkok and Sweden. 00:21:52.77\00:21:56.85 Yeah, exactly. 00:21:56.88\00:21:57.91 Rick, thanks for joining us today. 00:21:57.94\00:21:59.96 And viewers at home, 00:21:59.99\00:22:02.13 we are so encouraged when we see 00:22:02.16\00:22:05.42 that the church is being planted around the world 00:22:05.45\00:22:08.21 that there are many, many people being baptized 00:22:08.24\00:22:10.87 but let's never forget 00:22:10.90\00:22:13.41 that there are so many people, so many people groups, 00:22:13.44\00:22:16.44 so many geographical areas that have not yet been reached 00:22:16.47\00:22:19.79 with the good news of Jesus Christ. 00:22:19.82\00:22:22.08 Please pray for those involved in the frontlines in mission 00:22:22.11\00:22:25.14 and pray to God, ask Him how you too can be involved, 00:22:25.17\00:22:29.70 what can you do to help His-- help build His kingdom. 00:22:29.73\00:22:33.35 Come with me 00:22:41.83\00:22:45.28 Take my hand 00:22:45.31\00:22:48.65 Across the sea 00:22:48.68\00:22:52.06 To foreign lands 00:22:52.09\00:22:55.75 Sharing love 00:22:55.78\00:22:59.29 Sharing hope 00:22:59.32\00:23:01.94 It's our mission 00:23:01.97\00:23:05.33 And we must go 00:23:05.36\00:23:09.06 Won't you come along with me?
