I am Dan Weber the video producer 00:00:07.83\00:00:09.29 of the Office of Adventist Mission. 00:00:09.32\00:00:11.04 I am in Chiclayo, Peru and we've come here 00:00:11.07\00:00:13.57 to take a look at the church planting. 00:00:13.60\00:00:15.17 This is a town of over 10,000 people 00:00:15.20\00:00:17.48 but because of the church planting the small groups here 00:00:17.51\00:00:20.37 they are now 150 small churches 00:00:20.40\00:00:22.52 that have sprung up in this area. 00:00:22.55\00:00:24.62 Welcome to Global Mission Snapshots 00:00:24.65\00:00:26.30 where we take you to the frontline of mission. 00:00:26.33\00:00:28.25 Just before He went up to heaven 00:00:32.99\00:00:35.42 Jesus gave us a command. 00:00:35.45\00:00:38.42 He gave us a mission. 00:00:38.45\00:00:41.16 Jesus said "Go, go unto all the world 00:00:41.19\00:00:45.91 telling them of His love." 00:00:45.94\00:00:48.58 This is our mission, this is our Global Mission. 00:00:48.61\00:00:52.51 Hello, I am Gary Krause 00:00:58.10\00:00:59.22 and welcome to the Global Mission Snapshots 00:00:59.25\00:01:01.63 where we visit frontline mission around the world. 00:01:01.66\00:01:05.71 When Global Mission began more than 20 years ago 00:01:05.74\00:01:08.60 it focused the church on the most unreached people groups 00:01:08.63\00:01:12.23 and areas of the world 00:01:12.26\00:01:14.21 and that still our only focus. 00:01:14.24\00:01:17.02 But sometimes we forget that many of these groups 00:01:17.05\00:01:19.61 are right in our own front yard. 00:01:19.64\00:01:22.29 Today we will be talking with Terri Saelee, 00:01:22.32\00:01:24.82 Refugee and Immigrant Ministries coordinator 00:01:24.85\00:01:27.65 for the Adventist church in North America. 00:01:27.68\00:01:30.26 Terri spent several years with refugees in Thailand. 00:01:30.29\00:01:33.68 Today she and her husband are working with refugees 00:01:33.71\00:01:36.76 and immigrant groups right here. 00:01:36.79\00:01:39.42 We'll also be visiting South America 00:01:39.45\00:01:41.55 and we'll meet an inspiring little girl 00:01:41.58\00:01:44.01 sharing her faith with her friends on the Amazon River. 00:01:44.04\00:01:47.87 But first let's visit Southeast Asia 00:01:47.90\00:01:50.62 and the country of Malaysia 00:01:50.65\00:01:52.36 where Global Mission Pioneers are sharing Jesus love 00:01:52.39\00:01:55.60 among the lone houses. 00:01:55.63\00:01:58.46 In 1963 Pacific Press 00:01:58.49\00:02:01.38 published the book Nyla and the White Crocodile. 00:02:01.41\00:02:05.03 The book tells the story of a young girl 00:02:05.06\00:02:07.17 who lived along at the Tatau River in Sarawak Borneo. 00:02:07.20\00:02:11.19 Written by a missionary, 00:02:11.22\00:02:12.67 it tells the story of early attempts 00:02:12.70\00:02:14.90 to spread the gospel among the Dayak tribes 00:02:14.93\00:02:17.58 and the people who overcame superstition 00:02:17.61\00:02:20.11 and fear to live new lives in Jesus. 00:02:20.14\00:02:23.52 Today these same tribes 00:02:23.55\00:02:25.71 still live along the waters of the Tatua River. 00:02:25.74\00:02:28.89 For many their lives haven't change much 00:02:28.92\00:02:31.31 since the first Adventist missionaries 00:02:31.34\00:02:33.29 traveled up to this river more than 75 years ago. 00:02:33.32\00:02:37.04 Many of them still live in fear of spirits. 00:02:37.07\00:02:40.41 We still need to share the message of the gospel 00:02:40.44\00:02:42.95 with these beautiful people. 00:02:42.98\00:02:44.90 Time may have passed, 00:02:44.93\00:02:46.47 but some things haven't changed. 00:02:46.50\00:02:50.82 Sarawak located on the island of Borneo in Southeastern Asia 00:02:50.85\00:02:54.86 is home to more than 2.5 millions people. 00:02:54.89\00:02:58.59 The majority of their population belongs to the Dayak Iban tribe. 00:02:58.62\00:03:02.98 Many of them still live in traditional long houses. 00:03:03.01\00:03:06.63 These communal buildings provide a safe 00:03:06.66\00:03:08.97 and secure environment for the tribe's people. 00:03:09.00\00:03:12.54 They work together in small open spaces in the jungle 00:03:12.57\00:03:15.83 growing produce that they can sell in the local markets. 00:03:15.86\00:03:19.61 They fish the rivers and tap the rubber trees 00:03:19.64\00:03:22.25 that are plentiful in the dense jungles. 00:03:22.28\00:03:25.65 All of their shared activities 00:03:25.68\00:03:27.15 create a strong tightly knit family environment. 00:03:27.18\00:03:30.76 Outsiders are welcome 00:03:30.79\00:03:32.16 as long as they're willing to take part in the work 00:03:32.19\00:03:34.58 and become part of the family. 00:03:34.61\00:03:37.66 Recently the Adventist church 00:03:37.69\00:03:39.34 sent Global Mission Pioneer's to live and work 00:03:39.37\00:03:42.04 among the people of long houses. 00:03:42.07\00:03:44.98 These dedicated young people are devoting a year or more 00:03:45.01\00:03:48.24 of their lives to help spread the gospel 00:03:48.27\00:03:50.19 among the Iban people. 00:03:50.22\00:03:52.30 They become part of the community 00:03:52.33\00:03:54.01 and work to help better the lives of their new family. 00:03:54.04\00:03:57.28 They work with the members of the long house 00:03:57.31\00:03:59.31 and come to know them as friends. 00:03:59.34\00:04:02.52 They're welcomed and allowed to become 00:04:02.55\00:04:04.36 part of the long house family. 00:04:04.39\00:04:06.87 Eventually they are trusted 00:04:06.90\00:04:08.70 and have opportunities to share the gospel. 00:04:08.73\00:04:11.84 They hold Bible studies and introduce Jesus to people 00:04:11.87\00:04:14.94 who are excited to learn 00:04:14.97\00:04:16.42 about the God who loves them 00:04:16.45\00:04:18.22 and wants to change their lives for the better. 00:04:18.25\00:04:22.67 The Dayak people live simple lives. 00:04:22.70\00:04:25.80 They live off at Jungle 00:04:25.83\00:04:27.12 and their culture is based on their environment. 00:04:27.15\00:04:30.30 They are animists and live in fear of the spirit world. 00:04:30.33\00:04:34.28 Their whole world is guided by the omens and signs 00:04:34.31\00:04:37.65 that are common place in the jungle. 00:04:37.68\00:04:40.41 When they become Christians they lead a new life 00:04:40.44\00:04:43.29 free of the fears of their past. 00:04:43.32\00:04:46.13 They live in peace. 00:04:46.16\00:04:49.31 The Global Mission Pioneers 00:04:49.34\00:04:51.08 who live and work in the long houses 00:04:51.11\00:04:53.16 have proven to be very successful. 00:04:53.19\00:04:55.99 It's common to have 00:04:56.02\00:04:57.12 more than 50% of the long houses inhabitants 00:04:57.15\00:04:59.90 decide to join the church after a year's time. 00:04:59.93\00:05:03.54 A single Global Mission Pioneer can often reach out 00:05:03.57\00:05:07.41 to two or three long houses in a year. 00:05:07.44\00:05:11.30 After decision has been made to follow Jesus 00:05:11.33\00:05:14.60 a local pastor will come and hold Evangelistic meetings. 00:05:14.63\00:05:18.39 After the meetings the baptismal services held in a local river. 00:05:18.42\00:05:22.71 Often members of the long house 00:05:22.74\00:05:24.51 will line the edges of the river to watch the baptismal service. 00:05:24.54\00:05:29.18 Thanks to your mission offerings and support of Global Mission 00:05:29.21\00:05:33.02 lives are being changed in Sarawak. 00:05:33.05\00:05:36.04 Jesus calls us to spread the gospel to all the world. 00:05:36.07\00:05:40.30 The Global Mission focuses on the unreached areas of the world 00:05:40.33\00:05:43.84 that are proven to be difficult places to work. 00:05:43.87\00:05:47.55 By using local members 00:05:47.58\00:05:49.38 who are familiar with the local culture and customs 00:05:49.41\00:05:52.83 Global Mission is able to reach out 00:05:52.86\00:05:54.67 to people in these unreached areas. 00:05:54.70\00:05:58.50 Thank you for your support and prayers for Global Mission. 00:05:58.53\00:06:02.19 Please pray for the thousands of pioneers all over the world 00:06:02.22\00:06:06.28 who have dedicated their lives 00:06:06.31\00:06:07.86 to sharing God's love in tough and trying circumstances. 00:06:07.89\00:06:12.49 Thank you for helping to tell the world about Jesus. 00:06:12.52\00:06:16.38 Well, from the long houses of Malaysia 00:06:27.96\00:06:30.50 we now travel to the refugees camps of Thailand. 00:06:30.53\00:06:33.78 And my guest is Terri Saelee. 00:06:33.81\00:06:35.49 Thank you, Terri, for joining us today. 00:06:35.52\00:06:37.11 It's a privileged to be here. 00:06:37.14\00:06:38.44 Now you head up Immigrants and Refugee Ministries 00:06:38.47\00:06:41.21 for the Adventist Church in North America. 00:06:41.24\00:06:43.48 What does that mean? 00:06:43.51\00:06:45.30 Well, first of all it means helping us 00:06:45.33\00:06:48.45 to be aware of who refugees are, 00:06:48.48\00:06:50.19 why they are here 00:06:50.22\00:06:52.95 and then facilitating ministries through them. 00:06:52.98\00:06:55.71 And that involve so much there are so many needs, 00:06:55.74\00:06:59.04 but they are so eager to hear the gospel. 00:06:59.07\00:07:01.77 So if we can find someone 00:07:01.80\00:07:03.54 who can speak their language, who already believes in God, 00:07:03.57\00:07:07.24 the word spreads like wildfire. 00:07:07.27\00:07:08.91 And when they discover a relationship with Jesus 00:07:08.94\00:07:13.06 they can't help to share it and it just spread. 00:07:13.09\00:07:16.24 Yeah, now when did you start 00:07:16.27\00:07:19.82 your interest in these people goods? 00:07:19.85\00:07:23.23 Well, I was not aware of refugees 00:07:23.26\00:07:27.04 until I was a student at Union College 00:07:27.07\00:07:30.72 and on the bulletin board I saw a little notice 00:07:30.75\00:07:34.30 looking for people with cars 00:07:34.33\00:07:35.74 who would be willing to take Cambodian refugees 00:07:35.77\00:07:39.29 to the worship service in their language. 00:07:39.32\00:07:43.39 Dr. Beatrice Neal and Elder Raphael 00:07:43.42\00:07:48.69 were doing out-- 00:07:48.72\00:07:50.52 they had been missionaries in Cambodia 00:07:50.55\00:07:52.84 and they were doing a worship service 00:07:52.87\00:07:56.27 for Cambodian refugees there. 00:07:56.30\00:07:58.00 And so well, I have a car and free on Sabbath afternoons 00:07:58.03\00:08:01.62 so I signed up and that was 00:08:01.65\00:08:04.74 my first experience with refugees. 00:08:04.77\00:08:07.59 I went to pick up these families and the children. 00:08:07.62\00:08:10.46 They were so excited they come running out 00:08:10.49\00:08:13.26 barefooted in the snow 00:08:13.29\00:08:16.02 and that was my first contact. 00:08:16.05\00:08:18.06 And when it wasn't-- 00:08:18.09\00:08:19.65 actually it was test week of that year. 00:08:19.68\00:08:23.07 I felt impressed to call 00:08:23.10\00:08:26.03 that vice president of the college at that time 00:08:26.06\00:08:28.26 whose now actually president of Union College 00:08:28.29\00:08:33.52 Dr. John Wagner. 00:08:33.55\00:08:35.41 I felt impressed to call him on a totally unrelated topic 00:08:35.44\00:08:40.20 and he said, well, I have you on the phone 00:08:40.23\00:08:41.59 of you have you ever thought of overseas service. 00:08:41.62\00:08:44.10 And I said, well, I had 00:08:44.13\00:08:47.08 because friends wanted me to be a student missionary, 00:08:47.11\00:08:49.24 but I council with people prayed about it 00:08:49.27\00:08:52.70 and felt that I should wait a little while. 00:08:52.73\00:08:57.11 So, but he said, would you be willing to come 00:08:57.14\00:09:00.01 to my office and talk about it. 00:09:00.04\00:09:01.33 And when he told me about refugees 00:09:01.36\00:09:03.88 and they brought people from Vietnam 00:09:03.91\00:09:07.70 I just knew that this was a call from God. 00:09:07.73\00:09:11.26 And I didn't say so then I said I'll pray about it. 00:09:11.29\00:09:15.13 But God showed me through all kinds of little providences 00:09:15.16\00:09:19.89 that this was His will. 00:09:19.92\00:09:21.75 And so you went as a volunteer to where? 00:09:21.78\00:09:24.96 I went to work in the refugee camps in Thailand. 00:09:24.99\00:09:29.37 There are several but I work primarily initially in Ubon. 00:09:29.40\00:09:33.59 I went for six months ended of staying four years. 00:09:33.62\00:09:38.39 It was a life changing experience. 00:09:38.42\00:09:40.17 Okay, now life changing in what way? 00:09:40.20\00:09:43.81 Some how working with people who are less fortunate, 00:09:43.84\00:09:46.96 who have been through so much and yet are so cheerful 00:09:46.99\00:09:51.01 and happy and humble and respectful and appreciative 00:09:51.04\00:09:57.60 it just can't help but changing their life. 00:09:57.63\00:09:59.29 And I remember one experience 00:09:59.32\00:10:01.17 a young man about 17 said, can I share my story with you 00:10:01.20\00:10:05.76 and that was a treat because on another occasion 00:10:05.79\00:10:09.80 I was teaching English and Bible. 00:10:09.83\00:10:12.50 In the English class I taught, you know, I really don't know 00:10:12.53\00:10:14.74 what these people have been thorough really. 00:10:14.77\00:10:17.24 So I'm just gonna dedicate a class to talking about it. 00:10:17.27\00:10:19.69 And so as introduced him and I said so tell me 00:10:19.72\00:10:22.56 why did you leave your home country? 00:10:22.59\00:10:25.78 And they started laughing. 00:10:25.81\00:10:28.18 And I was puzzled and a young man 00:10:28.21\00:10:30.86 who was kind of the spokesman for the group 00:10:30.89\00:10:33.46 spoke up and he said we're laughing so we don't cry. 00:10:33.49\00:10:36.81 And I realized that wasn't a class time topic, 00:10:36.84\00:10:41.08 but it was a treat on occasion 00:10:41.11\00:10:45.07 when individuals willing to share their story. 00:10:45.10\00:10:48.27 And this young man said, 00:10:48.30\00:10:50.82 I was ten and my sister was seven 00:10:50.85\00:10:53.72 when the communist officials for the new government 00:10:53.75\00:10:57.98 came captured my parents 00:10:58.01\00:10:59.44 who had good jobs in the government 00:10:59.47\00:11:01.07 in the capital city of Laos 00:11:01.10\00:11:03.63 and I knew I was the man at the house now 00:11:03.66\00:11:08.52 and I had to take care of my sister. 00:11:08.55\00:11:10.47 And so I thought what can I do 00:11:10.50\00:11:11.71 and he realized well, we have a bathtub 00:11:11.74\00:11:15.86 which most people in our country don't have. 00:11:15.89\00:11:17.92 I can maybe use that to raise fish 00:11:17.95\00:11:19.88 to sell at the market and care for my sister. 00:11:19.91\00:11:23.19 Well, he tried his best 00:11:23.22\00:11:24.93 but he realized that it wasn't enough 00:11:24.96\00:11:28.45 and so they found someone willing 00:11:28.48\00:11:30.35 to take them across the Mekong River. 00:11:30.38\00:11:33.19 They left the car parked in the driveway 00:11:33.22\00:11:35.78 good home and he said, I've never seen my parents again, 00:11:35.81\00:11:38.70 I haven't heard, I don't know if they are dead or alive, 00:11:38.73\00:11:41.43 I don't know if I'll ever see them again, 00:11:41.46\00:11:43.84 but I'm so glad that communism came into my country. 00:11:43.87\00:11:48.77 And my mouth must have dropped open 00:11:48.80\00:11:50.32 because I couldn't imagine losing my parents 00:11:50.35\00:11:53.44 and being glad that for the circumstances 00:11:53.47\00:11:57.44 the caused it and he said, 00:11:57.47\00:12:00.52 because if communism had not come into my country 00:12:00.55\00:12:03.16 I never would have learned about God. 00:12:03.19\00:12:04.68 That taught me has nothing else 00:12:09.62\00:12:12.15 how much it means to these people to learn 00:12:12.18\00:12:15.17 about the heavenly Father, 00:12:15.20\00:12:17.22 to be able to have a relationship with Him. 00:12:17.25\00:12:19.86 And that just gave everything I had been doing more meaning 00:12:19.89\00:12:24.31 and that was one of many little things God used till later 00:12:24.34\00:12:29.93 impress me that that should be my life work. 00:12:29.96\00:12:33.87 Thank you, Terri. 00:12:33.90\00:12:34.93 Now for people who are interested 00:12:34.96\00:12:37.70 to learn more about the ministry 00:12:37.73\00:12:39.25 here in North America maybe how they can be involve 00:12:39.28\00:12:41.75 is there a website that they can go to for more information? 00:12:41.78\00:12:44.66 Yes, refugeeministries.org. 00:12:44.69\00:12:46.94 refugeeministries.org. Fantastic. 00:12:46.97\00:12:49.83 Thank you so much for joining today, Terri. 00:12:49.86\00:12:51.80 It's been a privilege thank you. 00:12:51.83\00:12:53.41 And please do take the time 00:12:53.44\00:12:55.39 to look up the website refugeeministries.org 00:12:55.42\00:12:59.29 to find out what is happening 00:12:59.32\00:13:00.91 in ministry to refugees and immigrant peoples 00:13:00.94\00:13:04.29 and also to see how you can personally be involve. 00:13:04.32\00:13:07.67 I read some statistics recently 00:13:07.70\00:13:10.12 that said that 88% of Hindus in North America 00:13:10.15\00:13:14.09 say I don't know even one Christian, 00:13:14.12\00:13:18.69 88%, 64% of Buddhists living in North America 00:13:18.72\00:13:24.01 say I don't know even one Christian, 00:13:24.04\00:13:27.29 32% of Muslims say exactly the same thing. 00:13:27.32\00:13:32.51 So we you see these people in our communities, 00:13:32.54\00:13:34.43 sometimes they drive us in taxi cabs, 00:13:34.46\00:13:36.31 they serve us in restaurants, 00:13:36.34\00:13:37.94 we bump into them in the street, 00:13:37.97\00:13:40.00 but this almost like they are invisible 00:13:40.03\00:13:41.73 to Christians in this country and around the world. 00:13:41.76\00:13:45.11 But God calls us to ministry 00:13:45.14\00:13:47.47 to the least of these 00:13:47.50\00:13:48.97 to people who He cares so much about. 00:13:49.00\00:13:51.87 Next stop let's travel just a little bit further 00:13:51.90\00:13:54.37 from Thailand to Cambodia. 00:13:54.40\00:13:56.37 These are the streets of the Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 00:14:06.80\00:14:10.35 a rough place to live 00:14:10.38\00:14:12.07 especially for young immigrant children. 00:14:12.10\00:14:15.10 The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Cambodia 00:14:15.13\00:14:17.62 is striving to make a difference among these desolate children 00:14:17.65\00:14:22.20 when no one else not even their parents seem to care. 00:14:22.23\00:14:26.78 Street children are often sold into the underground sex trade 00:14:26.81\00:14:30.67 to help pay off their parents gambling debts. 00:14:30.70\00:14:33.89 Without intervention they face a grim future. 00:14:33.92\00:14:38.36 The Adventist church is trying to give them hope, 00:14:38.39\00:14:41.64 trying to change their lives. 00:14:41.67\00:14:44.86 There are street children 00:14:44.89\00:14:48.12 even though they had parents at home, 00:14:48.15\00:14:50.38 but they don't stay at home they all the time on the street. 00:14:50.41\00:14:54.45 The majority of these children are from families 00:14:54.48\00:14:57.14 who have emigrated from Vietnam. 00:14:57.17\00:14:59.52 Neither they nor their parents 00:14:59.55\00:15:01.55 have the ability to read or write. 00:15:01.58\00:15:03.92 Pastor Khan and his small staff work hard 00:15:03.95\00:15:06.58 to help provide even the most basic academic skills 00:15:06.61\00:15:10.06 to these street children. 00:15:10.09\00:15:11.88 The Vietnamese community has embraced the school 00:15:11.91\00:15:14.65 and its efforts to educate their children. 00:15:14.68\00:15:17.57 They have even taken to calling yet the Life Changing School. 00:15:17.60\00:15:21.51 The school has shown dramatic growth since it starts. 00:15:21.54\00:15:25.21 Besides traditional academic subjects 00:15:25.24\00:15:27.77 the school teaches children life skills 00:15:27.80\00:15:30.37 that they can use to help them 00:15:30.40\00:15:31.77 gain employment when they grow up. 00:15:31.80\00:15:34.23 The children here are touched 00:15:34.26\00:15:35.60 by the Adventist church understand the precious gift 00:15:35.63\00:15:38.34 that has been given to them. 00:15:38.37\00:15:40.42 The children said up 00:15:40.45\00:15:41.62 we really need the school to be here, 00:15:41.65\00:15:43.96 to keep us here, to help us to learn 00:15:43.99\00:15:47.88 and to learn a job and to protect us. 00:15:47.91\00:15:51.16 When Jesus Christ was here on earth 00:15:51.19\00:15:53.62 He ministered to people by meeting their needs. 00:15:53.65\00:15:56.62 As Christians, we are called to follow His example 00:15:56.65\00:16:00.29 and to better the lives of those around us. 00:16:00.32\00:16:04.05 Thank you for your support of mission. 00:16:04.08\00:16:06.84 Thank you for your prayers 00:16:06.87\00:16:08.73 for those who need to be reached 00:16:08.76\00:16:10.51 with the message of hope in Jesus. 00:16:10.54\00:16:13.10 My Guest is Ricky Oliveras, 00:16:18.51\00:16:20.27 who is the newest member of the Adventist Mission team 00:16:20.30\00:16:23.96 at the world headquarters of the Adventist Church. 00:16:23.99\00:16:26.47 Ricky, you are a video producer 00:16:26.50\00:16:29.19 and you get to see 00:16:29.22\00:16:31.00 some very interesting mission stories around the world. 00:16:31.03\00:16:33.45 Yeah, so far I've had my-- the opportunity 00:16:33.48\00:16:36.57 to visit the South America Division 00:16:36.60\00:16:38.68 which was my first trip with Adventist Mission 00:16:38.71\00:16:41.23 and it was a very interesting trip. 00:16:41.26\00:16:43.30 Yeah, now you went to Peru, 00:16:43.33\00:16:46.00 tell us about the church in Peru? 00:16:46.03\00:16:48.97 The church in Peru is as really growing. 00:16:49.00\00:16:51.52 Right now they have approaching half a million members in Peru. 00:16:51.55\00:16:56.24 So, the church in Peru 00:16:56.27\00:16:57.31 is very vibrant and growing very well. 00:16:57.34\00:17:01.02 Now how are they growing? Why are they growing? 00:17:01.05\00:17:04.13 They are growing because when I was there 00:17:04.16\00:17:06.60 with Dan Weber, the other video producer, 00:17:06.63\00:17:09.21 we saw a lot of church planting 00:17:09.24\00:17:11.60 and a lot of small groups and it was really interesting 00:17:11.63\00:17:14.62 and exciting to see people 00:17:14.65\00:17:17.11 getting involved in their communities 00:17:17.14\00:17:18.93 and reaching out to people 00:17:18.96\00:17:21.23 that really don't know Jesus at all. 00:17:21.26\00:17:23.85 Now you were telling me about a lady 00:17:23.88\00:17:26.18 who is involved in church planting, tell us about that. 00:17:26.21\00:17:29.64 There was a small coastline town called Huanchaco beach 00:17:29.67\00:17:34.29 and this lady is really reaching out 00:17:34.32\00:17:37.28 to the members of her area by visiting them. 00:17:37.31\00:17:40.95 It started because she moved to this area there was-- 00:17:40.98\00:17:43.81 there were no Adventists, no, there was no church there. 00:17:43.84\00:17:47.02 And so she was kind of sad about that 00:17:47.05\00:17:49.49 so, she wanted to start something. 00:17:49.52\00:17:51.27 And, so she started in house Bible studies 00:17:51.30\00:17:54.56 with the few of her neighbors which grew 00:17:54.59\00:17:57.66 and which lead to her doing some meetings 00:17:57.69\00:18:00.42 and which really gathered some interest 00:18:00.45\00:18:02.44 and from there she's really grasped 00:18:02.47\00:18:06.34 really a lot of interest 00:18:06.37\00:18:08.43 from the community around her where 00:18:08.46\00:18:10.38 they want to know more about Jesus, 00:18:10.41\00:18:11.94 they want her to visit their house 00:18:11.97\00:18:14.09 and explain to her who Jesus is. 00:18:14.12\00:18:17.23 And it's really exciting to see her reaching 00:18:17.26\00:18:20.51 the community and it's really spreading wide. 00:18:20.54\00:18:23.11 So, there are now groups meeting in homes, 00:18:23.14\00:18:25.40 is that how it's happening or? 00:18:25.43\00:18:26.99 Ah, currently, yeah, she is still 00:18:27.02\00:18:28.68 reaching people in their homes 00:18:28.71\00:18:30.54 and visiting people in their homes. 00:18:30.57\00:18:32.47 And they have a meeting area where which is their church 00:18:32.50\00:18:36.13 and so they're meeting in that area. 00:18:36.16\00:18:37.98 But we were there to film what she was doing 00:18:38.01\00:18:41.53 because hopefully a new church will be planted there 00:18:41.56\00:18:44.22 and built there where they can meet 00:18:44.25\00:18:45.99 and little more comfortably and worship together. 00:18:46.02\00:18:50.42 Now this woman is a trained theologian 00:18:50.45\00:18:53.03 from the seminary, is she? 00:18:53.06\00:18:55.34 No, and that's the most exciting part about is 00:18:55.37\00:18:57.86 because you don't need to be 00:18:57.89\00:18:59.56 a trained theologian from the seminary. 00:18:59.59\00:19:01.95 You can be any, anybody really can reach out their community 00:19:01.98\00:19:06.14 and have an impact on their community, 00:19:06.17\00:19:07.68 that's the really great part about this. 00:19:07.71\00:19:11.01 Now you're telling me also about a man with a hat 00:19:11.04\00:19:14.40 and some sort of story with that 00:19:14.43\00:19:16.63 and I think we have some video there's to watch as well. 00:19:16.66\00:19:19.49 Tell us the story. 00:19:19.52\00:19:20.68 Well, the story is this man, Philippe, he is-- 00:19:20.71\00:19:25.61 he was a man that was, 00:19:25.64\00:19:28.30 you know, he worked outside in Lima, Peru. 00:19:28.33\00:19:30.82 And he was walking by this story, 00:19:30.85\00:19:33.83 he really likes hats. 00:19:33.86\00:19:35.21 He was walking by a store 00:19:35.24\00:19:36.58 and so he noticed some hats. 00:19:36.61\00:19:38.27 He went in there, bought a hat 00:19:38.30\00:19:40.49 not knowing what it was 00:19:40.52\00:19:41.55 he just thought, it was really cool 00:19:41.58\00:19:43.51 because it was the most expensive hat they had. 00:19:43.54\00:19:46.13 So he bought the hat, he was wearing it around 00:19:46.16\00:19:49.67 and he was in town one day, he saw a-- 00:19:49.70\00:19:52.31 wonderful somebody saw him, 00:19:52.34\00:19:53.91 this man who sells orange juice saw the hat 00:19:53.94\00:19:57.00 and said, "oh, are you an Adventist. 00:19:57.03\00:19:59.11 He said, "what's an Adventist? 00:19:59.14\00:20:00.76 Why are you asking me that?" 00:20:00.79\00:20:02.32 And the man explained, "oh, your hat 00:20:02.35\00:20:04.88 has the Adventist symbol the youth symbol on it. 00:20:04.91\00:20:08.38 And so, he was like, oh, tell me little more about that 00:20:08.41\00:20:11.29 so, the man was witnessed through his purchase 00:20:11.32\00:20:15.40 that he had he had no idea what he had bought. 00:20:15.43\00:20:17.70 And it was pretty cool to see that he learned 00:20:17.73\00:20:22.08 what it was to be an Adventist, 00:20:22.11\00:20:23.40 what Adventism is through his hat 00:20:23.43\00:20:26.69 and through just basically the symbol on his hat. 00:20:26.72\00:20:30.38 And so he ended up having Bible studies-- 00:20:30.41\00:20:32.05 So, he ended up visiting a church first of all 00:20:32.08\00:20:35.07 and then his interest grew 00:20:35.10\00:20:37.03 and he started having Bible studies 00:20:37.06\00:20:40.15 and found a church closer to him 00:20:40.18\00:20:42.63 where he could attend and so now he is attending church 00:20:42.66\00:20:45.86 and this man we met him personally 00:20:45.89\00:20:48.84 and he is just really on fire for God 00:20:48.87\00:20:51.09 and he is really cool to see that. 00:20:51.12\00:20:52.95 And obviously still likes to continue wearing the hat. 00:20:52.98\00:20:55.73 Oh, we saw him he had the hat, 00:20:55.76\00:20:57.94 he even have the receipt from the hat 00:20:57.97\00:21:00.45 when he bought that. 00:21:00.48\00:21:01.69 He was excited and he's just happy 00:21:01.72\00:21:05.19 to share his testimony which was really cool. 00:21:05.22\00:21:07.57 He's very willing to share and he was such a nice man. 00:21:07.60\00:21:11.91 Now when you were down there in South America 00:21:11.94\00:21:13.73 you were looking at some projects 00:21:13.76\00:21:15.99 that the Adventist Churches mission offering program 00:21:16.02\00:21:18.69 particularly the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:21:18.72\00:21:20.72 program that help support. 00:21:20.75\00:21:22.23 Can you tell us about some of those projects? 00:21:22.26\00:21:24.23 Yeah, some of the projects include the story of Eva 00:21:24.26\00:21:27.00 which is the-- the lady 00:21:27.03\00:21:28.56 who is doing Bible studies and church planting. 00:21:28.59\00:21:30.77 So, this is to help build a church 00:21:30.80\00:21:33.23 for these new believers? 00:21:33.26\00:21:34.72 Right, exactly, it's about the church the actual building. 00:21:34.75\00:21:38.61 There were some other projects to build, 00:21:38.64\00:21:40.36 there was another project interesting project 00:21:40.39\00:21:42.78 had an academy in Brazil actually to build a church there 00:21:42.81\00:21:48.90 because they've out grown the facilities they have. 00:21:48.93\00:21:51.81 So, that's needed there 00:21:51.84\00:21:53.51 and there were other building projects 00:21:53.54\00:21:55.16 and just ministries that were that-- 00:21:55.19\00:21:59.04 are gonna need the funds from the 13th Sabbath Offering. 00:21:59.07\00:22:01.92 Okay, so this offering as where Adventists all around the world 00:22:01.95\00:22:05.12 pull the money together and this goes to help mission 00:22:05.15\00:22:11.06 in every part of the world. 00:22:11.09\00:22:12.33 Exactly, each quarter of the year 00:22:12.36\00:22:14.51 the year is divided into four quarters 00:22:14.54\00:22:16.10 each quarter a different division in the world 00:22:16.13\00:22:18.90 is covered in the church joins together 00:22:18.93\00:22:23.17 to donate to that division of the world. 00:22:23.20\00:22:25.42 So we can help fund the project 00:22:25.45\00:22:28.22 that are needed to help reach God. 00:22:28.25\00:22:30.26 Now for some viewers who want to join this to-- 00:22:30.29\00:22:33.55 they're giving mission offerings 00:22:33.58\00:22:34.61 how do they do that? 00:22:34.64\00:22:35.80 They can do it in a local Adventist Church 00:22:35.83\00:22:37.73 but they can also do it online. 00:22:37.76\00:22:39.12 Yeah, they can visit the Adventist mission website 00:22:39.15\00:22:42.79 where they can find different resources 00:22:42.82\00:22:44.32 and links to other ways that they can help others 00:22:44.35\00:22:48.31 donating to the 13th Sabbath Offering, 00:22:48.34\00:22:51.30 donating to different mission, 00:22:51.33\00:22:54.76 you know, mission groups are different things. 00:22:54.79\00:22:57.19 Fantastic. 00:22:57.22\00:22:58.64 Okay, Ricky, thank you so much for joining us today. 00:22:58.67\00:23:00.44 Thank you. 00:23:00.47\00:23:01.50 And viewers at home, please pray for mission around the world. 00:23:01.53\00:23:06.06 You know, we see growth in certain parts, 00:23:06.09\00:23:09.34 we praise God for what's happening 00:23:09.37\00:23:10.63 in Peru, Brazil, other parts. 00:23:10.66\00:23:12.64 Other parts of the world for various reasons, 00:23:12.67\00:23:16.37 the church is not growing that the challenge is there 00:23:16.40\00:23:19.86 of how do we make Jesus relevant 00:23:19.89\00:23:23.19 and attractive and meaningful to people 00:23:23.22\00:23:25.74 who come from totally different cultural backgrounds. 00:23:25.77\00:23:28.91 And thank you for your continuing support for mission, 00:23:28.94\00:23:32.02 it make so much of so many things possible. 00:23:32.05\00:23:34.79 Our next story is from the country of Brazil, 00:23:34.82\00:23:37.30 and we go to the Amazon River 00:23:37.33\00:23:39.37 and we meet a little evangelist, Vitoria, 00:23:39.40\00:23:43.27 who knows what Jesus means in her life 00:23:43.30\00:23:45.58 and wants to share that love with others. 00:23:45.61\00:23:47.40 Hello, my name is Vitoria 00:23:51.28\00:23:53.66 I live in Jericho along the river by meek. 00:23:53.69\00:23:57.92 Vitoria lives a simple life 00:23:57.95\00:23:59.70 in the Amazon region of Northern Brazil. 00:23:59.73\00:24:02.43 She lives with their parents and her brother, Daniel, 00:24:02.46\00:24:05.42 along a narrow river 00:24:05.45\00:24:06.71 that's makes its way to the jungle. 00:24:06.74\00:24:09.37 One day a week, Vitoria leaves her small house 00:24:09.40\00:24:12.23 on the edge of the water and climb into a canoe 00:24:12.26\00:24:15.03 with destination of Bible study with her friend. 00:24:15.06\00:24:18.61 Vitoria paddles along the river to pickup her friend 00:24:18.64\00:24:21.91 at her house then continues on to the next house. 00:24:21.94\00:24:26.20 When the canoe is full of her friends, 00:24:26.23\00:24:27.99 they paddle up the river until they come to a path 00:24:28.02\00:24:31.08 that leads them into the jungle. 00:24:31.11\00:24:32.74 They carefully climb up 00:24:32.77\00:24:34.16 the slippery bank trying not to get muddy. 00:24:34.19\00:24:36.96 Tying up the canoe, the friends walk on the fallen logs 00:24:36.99\00:24:40.60 as they make their way to the jungle. 00:24:40.63\00:24:42.94 They need to be careful 00:24:42.97\00:24:44.40 because one little slip 00:24:44.43\00:24:46.01 and they would be up to their knees in mud. 00:24:46.04\00:24:49.37 At the end of the logs 00:24:49.40\00:24:50.95 they come up to a small hut on stilts. 00:24:50.98\00:24:53.86 This was a home of other friend 00:24:53.89\00:24:55.68 who is hosting their Bible study. 00:24:55.71\00:24:57.81 They are glad to see each other again 00:24:57.84\00:25:00.19 and quickly into the house to begin their lessons. 00:25:00.22\00:25:03.38 Vitoria and her brother, Daniel, lead the group in prayer 00:25:03.41\00:25:07.24 and study the lesson prepared 00:25:07.27\00:25:09.32 by the Adventist church in Brazil. 00:25:09.35\00:25:11.65 Vitoria is quick to answer any questions 00:25:11.68\00:25:14.45 that her friends may have. 00:25:14.48\00:25:15.94 Then she leaves them up 00:25:15.97\00:25:17.33 in a singing song of worship in praise. 00:25:17.36\00:25:20.17 As they close their meeting, 00:25:20.20\00:25:21.75 they bow their heads in prayer 00:25:21.78\00:25:23.43 and thank Jesus for loving them 00:25:23.46\00:25:25.29 and giving them the opportunity to worship Him. 00:25:25.32\00:25:28.23 So they're trying to think of an interesting way 00:25:28.26\00:25:30.89 that you can share the love of Jesus with your friends. 00:25:30.92\00:25:34.43 How can you show other people that you love and worship Jesus 00:25:34.46\00:25:38.61 even if you aren't a 10-year-old girl, 00:25:38.64\00:25:41.12 who lives in the jungles of Brazil? 00:25:41.15\00:25:44.75 It was Jesus himself who said a little child shall lead them. 00:25:44.78\00:25:49.62 And it's obviously still true 2,000 years later. 00:25:49.65\00:25:53.08 Just a little kid 00:25:53.11\00:25:54.67 with a heart to tell other children about the Jesus 00:25:54.70\00:25:57.47 she knows and loves. 00:25:57.50\00:25:59.82 And that's what mission is all about simply sharing 00:25:59.85\00:26:02.67 the good news about the God we know. 00:26:02.70\00:26:05.24 The Bible tells us to train up our children 00:26:05.27\00:26:07.44 in the way that they should go 00:26:07.47\00:26:09.43 but how do we instill in their hearts, 00:26:09.46\00:26:11.98 a passion for mission. 00:26:12.01\00:26:14.01 The office of the Adventist Mission 00:26:14.04\00:26:15.45 prepares a range of resources 00:26:15.48\00:26:17.74 to help share mission with our children. 00:26:17.77\00:26:20.73 Mission Magazines, DVD stories aims specifically for kids 00:26:20.76\00:26:25.72 and they help out children look beyond the church walls 00:26:25.75\00:26:28.93 to see a world in need. 00:26:28.96\00:26:31.20 We've also created a resource called Mission Cards for Kids. 00:26:31.23\00:26:35.12 These simple cards help children remember mission stories. 00:26:35.15\00:26:39.56 And if you're living in North America 00:26:39.59\00:26:40.99 we'd love to send you, 00:26:41.02\00:26:42.54 a free sample set of these cards 00:26:42.57\00:26:45.04 that you can share with the children in your life. 00:26:45.07\00:26:48.25 Simply call the toll free number on your screen, 00:26:48.28\00:26:51.29 1-800-648-5824 or visit our website 00:26:51.32\00:26:56.48 and ask for Mission Cards for Kids or Offer Number 302. 00:26:56.51\00:27:02.05 Please remember to clearly state your name and address 00:27:02.08\00:27:05.45 and be sure to mention Mission Cards for Kids or offer 302. 00:27:05.48\00:27:10.42 So, we'll be sure to send you the sample mission cards. 00:27:10.45\00:27:14.57 Again, if you'd like to receive 00:27:14.60\00:27:16.46 a sample set of Mission Cards for Kids, 00:27:16.49\00:27:19.08 just call the toll free number on your screen, 00:27:19.11\00:27:21.80 1800-648-5824 and ask for Mission Cards for Kids 00:27:21.83\00:27:27.97 or Offer 302 or you can visit our website 00:27:28.00\00:27:32.00 at AdventistMission.org. 00:27:32.03\00:27:34.85 Well, that's it for our program for today. 00:27:34.88\00:27:37.20 Thank you so much for joining us. 00:27:37.23\00:27:39.22 And thank you for your continuing prayers, 00:27:39.25\00:27:41.85 support and personal involvement in Global Mission. 00:27:41.88\00:27:46.14 For Adventist mission, I am Gray Krause 00:27:46.17\00:27:47.91 and I hope you can join us next time right here 00:27:47.94\00:27:51.01 on Global Mission Snapshots. 00:27:51.04\00:27:52.95
