thousands of people

Jesus to come on that day.

Prophecy had pointed
unerringly to the date.

They knew 1844 was right by
what prophecy had predicted.

They had experienced the
presence of the Holy Spirit

in their preaching.

Tens of thousands of
people had been converted,

and were waiting
for Jesus to come,

anticipating not only
the joy of seeing Jesus,

but also the joy of
seeing their loved ones

who have passed away.

But now that sweet anticipation

had turned to a
most bitter experience.

Reading what one
of them later recalled

helps us understand

the intensity of
this disappointment.

I want you to notice the
words of a young preacher

who was there
during the preaching

because he had joined

even though he
was only in his 20s,

he had joined the
preaching of William Miller.

He was one among the
many hundreds of ministers

who did and he wrote
this after the disappointment.

the passing of the time,

and stated that the
brethren should prepare

for another cold winter,"

because it's October and
it's in the Northern Hemisphere,

"my feelings were
almost uncontrollable.

I left the place of meeting
and I wept like a child."

You know, we must ask
the same questions today
00:03:38.58\00:03:40.92
of that time.

They had been so sure
00:03:42.75\00:03:44.29
as I said that
prophecy had been fulfilled.

But that raised big questions,
00:03:47.39\00:03:49.19
was God leading
them in this experience

when it came to such
a bitter disappointment?

Could God have
been in a movement

that ended so ignominiously
00:03:57.37\00:03:59.87
when thousands
even lost their faith
00:03:59.90\00:04:03.20
because of their disappointment?
00:04:03.24\00:04:06.01
You know, so often God's
ways seem perplexing to us,
00:04:06.04\00:04:11.51
especially when
they cause us pain.
00:04:11.55\00:04:14.18
But God is working
because He sees the big picture.
00:04:14.22\00:04:18.05
He sees the end
from the beginning,
00:04:18.09\00:04:21.09
and knows what is best.
00:04:21.12\00:04:23.59
I want this morning in
introducing this disappointment
00:04:23.63\00:04:26.86
and how God
resolved it to a time
00:04:26.90\00:04:29.56
when God's people suffered
00:04:29.60\00:04:31.23
a big
disappointment in Bible times.
00:04:31.27\00:04:35.10
And I'm
referring to the experience
00:04:35.14\00:04:36.84
of the two
disciples, followers of Jesus
00:04:36.87\00:04:40.28
walking on that road to Emmaus
00:04:40.31\00:04:42.91
on the day that
Jesus rose from the dead.
00:04:42.94\00:04:46.05
We pick up the
story in Luke Chapter 24.
00:04:46.08\00:04:49.55
And we're going to read
the whole story this morning,
00:04:49.58\00:04:51.79
verses 13 down to 32.
00:04:51.82\00:04:54.82
Because it is
such an important story
00:04:54.86\00:04:57.69
and it's going to throw a lot
of light on the disappointment
00:04:57.73\00:05:01.16
that was suffered in 1844.
00:05:01.20\00:05:03.77
So here is verse 13.

"Now behold, two of them,"
two of the followers of Jesus,
00:05:05.23\00:05:09.34
"were traveling that same
day to a village called Emmaus."
00:05:09.37\00:05:12.71
Now may I remind you
again, earlier that morning,
00:05:12.74\00:05:15.98
Jesus had risen from the dead.
00:05:16.01\00:05:18.68
You all know why I
mentioned that and emphasize it
00:05:18.71\00:05:21.48
in the light of
what's going to follow.
00:05:21.52\00:05:23.39
But Jesus had risen
that Sunday morning.
00:05:23.42\00:05:25.89
And now two of his followers
00:05:25.92\00:05:27.36
were walking on
a road to Emmaus,
00:05:27.39\00:05:29.59
"which was about
seven miles from Jerusalem.
00:05:29.62\00:05:32.56
And they talked
together of all these things,"
00:05:32.59\00:05:36.03
and now, "which had
happened," of course.
00:05:36.06\00:05:39.40
"So it was, while they conversed
00:05:39.43\00:05:42.20
and reasoned
that Jesus Himself,"
00:05:42.24\00:05:45.27
think of what
I've just told you,
00:05:45.31\00:05:47.08
"that Jesus Himself drew
near, and went with them."
00:05:47.11\00:05:51.25
These two, but
and notice the but,
00:05:51.28\00:05:55.02
"But their eyes were restrained,
00:05:55.05\00:05:57.72
so that they didn't know Him."

So here they were
walking along this country road,

and a stranger comes
up and walks with them.

And they don't know
because something's happened

to their eyes.

They don't know
that this is Jesus

that is walking with them.

So let's continue

conversation is this...

that you have with one another
as you walk and are sad?'

" Jesus picked up that
these two people were sad

because of something that
had happened in their lives.

So what is it?

What kind of conversation is it?

Notice the
answer that they gave.

"Then the one
whose name was Cleopas,

again can I remind you,

we only know the
name of one of the two,

"and said to Him, 'Are You
the only stranger in Jerusalem,

and have You not known
the things which happened

there in these days?'
00:06:51.51\00:06:53.04
" Because they are
aware, this is Sunday morning,
00:06:53.07\00:06:55.51
Jesus had died two
days before on the Friday.
00:06:55.54\00:07:00.12
And they're sad,
and they're wondering
00:07:00.15\00:07:01.58
why the stranger
is not sad as well.

And so it
continues in the next verse.

"And He,"
Jesus, "said unto them,

'What things have happened?'

" You know, this is
one of my favorite stories

in the Gospel of Luke.

And I think here is
Jesus going along with this.

What things have happened there
in the last couple of days?

And how do they...

And he said to them,
and "So they said to Him,

'The things
concerning Jesus of Nazareth,
00:07:25.07\00:07:27.74
who was a Prophet mighty
in deed and word before God
00:07:27.78\00:07:31.01
and all the people,
and how the chief priests
00:07:31.05\00:07:33.78
and our rulers delivered
Him to be condemned to death,
00:07:33.82\00:07:38.02
and crucified Him.'"
00:07:38.05\00:07:41.26
Then in the next verse,

and here I want you to
notice the first sentence.

"But we were hoping that
00:07:47.33\00:07:49.00
it was he who was
going to redeem Israel."

I want to stop there.

There's the disappointment.
00:07:55.00\00:07:57.54
Here was Jesus walking among us,
00:07:57.57\00:07:59.74
we thought He was a prophet.
00:07:59.77\00:08:01.74
And we were hoping that He
was going to redeem Israel,
00:08:01.78\00:08:05.78
but He died.
00:08:05.81\00:08:07.65
I need to explain something.
00:08:07.68\00:08:10.59
When Jesus came to this earth,
00:08:10.62\00:08:13.02
what was believed
by the Jewish leaders,
00:08:13.05\00:08:15.52
and that
included Jesus disciples,
00:08:15.56\00:08:18.43
was that when the
Messiah came to earth,
00:08:18.46\00:08:21.83
because the Jews
had always held the hope
00:08:21.86\00:08:23.80
that the Messiah
would come one day,
00:08:23.83\00:08:26.53
and they had seen
signs that made them think
00:08:26.57\00:08:28.57
that maybe
Jesus was the Messiah.
00:08:28.60\00:08:31.07
It was a common belief
among the Jewish people
00:08:31.11\00:08:33.88
that when the Messiah came,
he would throw off the Romans,
00:08:33.91\00:08:37.58
who were ruling over
them, and make Israel
00:08:37.61\00:08:40.52
the greatest
nation on the earth.
00:08:40.55\00:08:43.28
And they believed
that because they had read
00:08:43.32\00:08:45.99
text in the Old Testament
00:08:46.02\00:08:48.29
that really referred to
the Second Coming of Jesus.
00:08:48.32\00:08:52.39
And they thought that
if Jesus was the Messiah,
00:08:52.43\00:08:55.83
He would throw off the Romans
and make Israel a great nation.
00:08:55.86\00:08:59.43
Now that, of course, suited
their national pride as well.
00:08:59.47\00:09:02.77
And I guess Satan
had a plan in doing this,
00:09:02.80\00:09:06.37
that because they believed that
00:09:06.41\00:09:08.98
Jesus didn't
fulfill what they believed,
00:09:09.01\00:09:12.48
and therefore they were
in the mood to reject Jesus
00:09:12.51\00:09:15.48
which, of course, they did.
00:09:15.52\00:09:17.69
So keep in mind
that was the reason.

We were hoping that he
was going to redeem Israel.
00:09:20.09\00:09:22.36
He was going to lift Israel up
00:09:22.39\00:09:23.73
and be the great
nation in the earth.

And then they continued.

"Indeed, besides all
this, today is the third day

since these things happened.

Yes, and certain
women of our company,

who arrived at the
tomb early, astonished us.
00:09:37.01\00:09:43.01
When they did not find his body,

they came saying that they had
also seen a vision of angels,
00:09:45.65\00:09:49.05
" they're reporting
what had been heard about
00:09:49.08\00:09:51.82
what had happened
earlier that morning,

"who said he was
alive and certain of those
00:09:53.89\00:09:56.32
who were with
us went to the tomb
00:09:56.36\00:09:58.06
and found that just
as the women had said,

but Him they did not see.

Then he said to them,"
look, now here Jesus speaking,
00:10:04.43\00:10:08.90
'O foolish ones,
00:10:08.94\00:10:11.17
and slow of heart to believe
00:10:11.21\00:10:13.68
in all that the
prophets have spoken!'

" And He probably emphasized
00:10:16.01\00:10:17.71
in all that the
prophets have spoken.

You have just been
reading a selection
00:10:20.42\00:10:21.98
of Old Testament texts,
00:10:22.02\00:10:23.35
believing that the Messiah
was going to be a great king
00:10:23.39\00:10:25.75
who would throw off the Romans.
00:10:25.79\00:10:28.86
But the Old Testament
was saying a lot more.
00:10:28.89\00:10:31.79
Then he said to them,
"Ought not the Christ..."
00:10:31.83\00:10:35.06
And remember that
word, as we've discovered
00:10:35.10\00:10:36.70
in our earlier
presentation means the Messiah,

"Ought not the Messiah, "

the promised one that
you've been hoping to see,

"to have suffered these things,
00:10:44.34\00:10:47.38
" He'd gone to the cross,
"and to enter into His glory?

And beginning at
Moses, and all the prophets,
00:10:53.18\00:10:56.85
He expounded to them
in all the Scriptures
00:10:56.89\00:11:00.26
the things concerning Himself."
00:11:00.29\00:11:03.02
Oh, friends,
00:11:03.06\00:11:04.39
how much I would love to
have heard that Bible study.
00:11:04.43\00:11:07.86
You notice it says that
beginning way back there
00:11:07.90\00:11:10.40
with the Books of Moses,
and then all the prophets,
00:11:10.43\00:11:14.57
he told them that the text
in the Bible concerning Jesus.
00:11:14.60\00:11:19.01
Now I've
mentioned to you before,
00:11:19.04\00:11:21.14
that in the Old
Testament, scholars say
00:11:21.18\00:11:22.94
that there are
some 300 predictions
00:11:22.98\00:11:24.98
in the Old Testament
that pointed to the Messiah.
00:11:25.01\00:11:29.02
And I'm sure Jesus
didn't give them the whole 300.
00:11:29.05\00:11:32.05
But I'm sure He would have
read to them about Isaiah 53,
00:11:32.09\00:11:35.99
that wonderful
chapter there in Isaiah,
00:11:36.02\00:11:38.59
where it says He was
wounded for our transgressions,
00:11:38.63\00:11:42.13
you remember,
00:11:42.16\00:11:43.50
and He was bruised
for our iniquities,
00:11:43.53\00:11:45.77
He was led as a
lamb to the slaughter.
00:11:45.80\00:11:49.17
He would have
probably pointed out
00:11:49.20\00:11:50.61
I'm sure that
prophecy in Daniel,
00:11:50.64\00:11:52.94
which foretold the exact
year Jesus would be baptized,
00:11:52.97\00:11:56.85
and then the year
that He would be crucified.
00:11:56.88\00:11:59.25
Exactly.
00:11:59.28\00:12:01.05
But whatever He said that
day, He expounded to them,
00:12:01.08\00:12:05.42
that the Messiah wasn't
going to come and be a king,
00:12:05.45\00:12:09.56
and throw off the Romans.
00:12:09.59\00:12:11.66
He was going to come
as a suffering servant,
00:12:11.69\00:12:15.03
and He would die on a cross.
00:12:15.06\00:12:18.93
And that was a revelation
00:12:18.97\00:12:20.47
to those two disciples that day.
00:12:20.50\00:12:23.71
Then it says, "Then
they drew near to the village
00:12:23.74\00:12:26.94
where they were going,
00:12:26.98\00:12:28.31
and He indicated that He
would have gone on farther.
00:12:28.34\00:12:31.41
But they constrained Him saying,
00:12:31.45\00:12:33.11
'Abide with us, for
it is toward evening,
00:12:33.15\00:12:35.98
and the day is far spent.'
00:12:36.02\00:12:37.82
And He went in
to stay with them.'"

And it continues,
"Now it came to pass,

as He sat at the
table with them, "

notice what happens,

"that He took bread
and gave it to them."

And at that
moment, the Bible says,

"Then their eyes were opened,

and they knew who had
been walking with them.

They knew who was the one
00:13:02.04\00:13:03.41
who had given
them that Bible study,

and he vanished
from their sight."

I wonder why it was that
the Bible says He went in,

broke the
bread, gave it to them,

then their eyes were opened.

Why do you think it
happened at that very moment?

I have a theory.

And I think I can back
it up in Scripture, too.

But I think that
what happened as he they,

as he handed the bread to
them, what would they have seen?

They have seen the marks

in His hands
from the crucifixion.

Then their eyes were
opened, and they knew Him.

They knew Him.

Well...

let's have a look
as the story continues,

because when we compare
or look at their experience,

we can ask some questions about
why they were disappointed,
00:13:55.16\00:14:00.17
and what had caused
their disappointment.

Let's have a look at that.

First of all the disciples,
if we can ask the question,

why were they disappointed?
00:14:11.28\00:14:13.31
And the answer
comes because Jesus

hadn't set up His kingdom,
as they expected Him to.
00:14:16.25\00:14:20.46
Remember they expected
00:14:20.49\00:14:21.82
a different
picture of the Messiah
00:14:21.86\00:14:23.63
than the one who
had allowed Himself
00:14:23.66\00:14:25.19
to be crucified.
00:14:25.23\00:14:26.80
Then the question also comes,

what had caused
their disappointment?
00:14:29.40\00:14:31.97
And the answer,
they had misinterpreted
00:14:32.00\00:14:35.17
the Old Testament
prophecies about Jesus.
00:14:35.20\00:14:39.71
Whereas the Bible spoke about
the events of the Second Coming
00:14:39.74\00:14:42.91
that the Jews were focusing on.
00:14:42.94\00:14:45.01
They hadn't read the
rest of the Old Testament
00:14:45.05\00:14:47.48
carefully enough to see that
He was to come and die first.
00:14:47.52\00:14:51.75
And then how did Jesus
resolve their disappointment?
00:14:51.79\00:14:55.66
Well, He pointed
them to His Word.
00:14:55.69\00:14:59.56
He gave them a
Bible study, opened up
00:14:59.59\00:15:01.86
some of those Old
Testament scriptures
00:15:01.90\00:15:03.87
that pointed to Him
coming and dying on a cross.
00:15:03.90\00:15:07.30
And that made a tremendous
difference to their experience.
00:15:07.34\00:15:11.27
What a wonderful Bible
study it must have been.
00:15:11.31\00:15:14.28
Of course, as they realized
in hearing Jesus speaking,
00:15:14.31\00:15:17.35
of course, the
Messiah had to die,
00:15:17.38\00:15:19.55
not come as a
king, He had to die.
00:15:19.58\00:15:22.45
And He died right on
time just as Daniel predicted.
00:15:22.48\00:15:26.05
They thought that He
was going to come as a king,
00:15:26.09\00:15:28.66
but He had a work to perform
in the heavenly sanctuary
00:15:28.69\00:15:34.03
before He could come and
be the leader of the world.
00:15:34.06\00:15:39.40
In other words, they hadn't read
00:15:39.43\00:15:40.77
all those Old
Testament scriptures
00:15:40.80\00:15:43.41
that said about the
Messiah and His kingdom.
00:15:43.44\00:15:46.88
You know, the Bible
says a little later on,
00:15:46.91\00:15:49.74
that when they reported back
to the disciples in Jerusalem
00:15:49.78\00:15:53.68
about their experience
of walking with Jesus,
00:15:53.72\00:15:56.79
they said, "Did not
our heart burn within us
00:15:56.82\00:16:00.76
while He talked
to us on the way?"
00:16:00.79\00:16:04.06
I don't know whether
you've ever had an experience,
00:16:04.09\00:16:06.43
dear friends, of
the burning heart.
00:16:06.46\00:16:09.10
You've listened to something
00:16:09.13\00:16:10.57
from God's Word that has really
00:16:10.60\00:16:12.57
sort of inspired
you and thrilled you
00:16:12.60\00:16:15.40
the experience
of the burning heart
00:16:15.44\00:16:18.44
as He unfolded
prophecies to them.
00:16:18.47\00:16:20.84
Prophecy had been fulfilled,
it had pointed unerringly
00:16:20.88\00:16:24.75
to the last few
days in Jerusalem,
00:16:24.78\00:16:27.22
but and listen to
what I'm about to say.
00:16:27.25\00:16:29.95
But their
interpretation was different.
00:16:29.98\00:16:33.66
The 69 and a half
weeks of Daniel's prophecy

that we studied, a
couple of presentations ago

had been exactly fulfilled.
00:16:39.49\00:16:42.30
The time was right,
the timing was right.
00:16:42.33\00:16:47.07
But the event they
thought was to happen was wrong.

And Jesus came and through
His Word corrected their error,

brought them through
their disappointment,

reaffirm their faith
and their confidence,

This is the state of New York.

And you'll see a blue

which is a canal

that the American
people had built in 1825.

And it really opened up
00:17:40.06\00:17:41.39
the whole central
part of the United States.

Because people's
goods that came from Europe,
00:17:44.49\00:17:47.56
could come to New York,
they could go up that river
00:17:47.60\00:17:50.03
that you can
see, up to Waterford,
00:17:50.07\00:17:53.13
then put all their
goods on that canal
00:17:53.17\00:17:55.77
and take it right
across the state of New York
00:17:55.80\00:17:58.31
and empty it down in Buffalo,
00:17:58.34\00:18:00.54
which is just
below Niagara Falls.

That was the reason why

they couldn't bring their goods

into the central
part of the United States,

because Niagara Falls
was there to block them.

And there on that canal

is a little town
called Port Gibson.

And I want to take
you there this morning.

Because in Port Gibson

there lived a man
called Hiram Edson.
00:18:21.00\00:18:24.57
He was a Methodist lay preacher.
00:18:24.60\00:18:27.20
And he'd been converted
00:18:27.24\00:18:28.57
to the teachings
of William Miller
00:18:28.60\00:18:31.04
that Jesus was coming in 1844.
00:18:31.07\00:18:34.88
And he believed
that that was right,
00:18:34.91\00:18:37.38
that that was biblical.
00:18:37.41\00:18:39.38
And here he
shared his new faith,
00:18:39.41\00:18:41.22
he couldn't hold it to himself,
and he shared his new faith.
00:18:41.25\00:18:44.92
This is 1843 just before 1844,
00:18:44.95\00:18:48.12
and about
hundred of his neighbors
00:18:48.16\00:18:50.43
were also looking
forward to the coming of Jesus.
00:18:50.46\00:18:55.10
A short time
before the disappointment,

those tens of
thousands of people

who had believed
Miller's teachings
00:19:01.14\00:19:03.61
had taken the name Adventist.

They, Miller himself
was really a little upset

when people referred
to them as Millerites.
00:19:11.45\00:19:14.38
He didn't feel that his
name should be mentioned
00:19:14.42\00:19:16.55
in that way.

And so because these
people were looking forward

to the Second
Coming, the advent of Jesus,

they took the name Adventists.

On October 22,

Hiram Edson was
among the many people
00:19:31.40\00:19:34.44
who were disappointed,
00:19:34.47\00:19:36.17
waiting after waiting
for the coming of the Lord.

And I want you to
notice what he says

about that disappointment.
00:19:41.31\00:19:43.35
"We looked for our
coming Lord on October 22
00:19:43.38\00:19:47.68
until the clock
told 12 at mid-night.
00:19:47.72\00:19:51.92
The day had been
passed," he wrote,
00:19:51.95\00:19:54.79
"and our disappointment
became a certainty.
00:19:54.82\00:19:58.76
Our fondest
hopes and expectations
00:19:58.79\00:20:02.03
were blasted, " he says.

And then it continues,

"And such a spirit
of weeping came over us

as I never experienced before...

We wept and wept
till the day dawn."

Here is this man with
those people gathering

in that little
town of Port Gibson,

describing their experience,

we wept and wept
through the rest of the night

until the day dawned.

Jesus had not
come, had not come.

Well, as the sun
rose on a new day,

Edson tells us and he
writes this in a manuscript

and I've held that
manuscript in my hands,

the writing of this man as
he recalled that experience.

He tells us that he suggested
to some of his friends,

that they should go to his barn
and meet for earnest prayer.

Why were they praying?

They wanted the Lord to
give them understanding,

to tell them why Jesus
hadn't come the day before.

And it entails that
they continued in prayer,

until the conviction came that

their prayers
were really answered,

heard and accepted,

and that God would
provide an explanation

as to why He hadn't
come the day before.

beginning to wonder

whether there
was a God in heaven,

bitter disappointment.

It tells us that
they were reassured

But can you imagine
how the world at that time

thousands of Adventists,

who were looking
forward to the coming of Jesus,

when He didn't come.

And to avoid the
mocking of their neighbors,

they decided to
cut across a field.

Both were still thinking
about their disappointment,

over the failure of
Jesus to come as a king.

They were walking
with heavy hearts,

so saddened because
of their experience.

And like the two disciples,
one of whose name we know,

walking along a
country road in disappointment.

So two Adventists,
one of whose name we know

were walking on a
longer road in disappointment.

The disciples had looked forward

to Jesus coming as a king.

And were disappointed
because Jesus didn't come

as they expected Him to.

And the Adventists,
they were looking forward

to Jesus coming as a king.

But he was... They
too were disappointed.

Adventists disappointed?

important revelation,

The sanctuary to be
cleansed was not the earth

as William Miller and hundreds
of other preachers had said.

It was the sanctuary in
heaven that was to be cleansed.

And this idea seemed
like a message from heaven.

It was a wonderful discovery.

Their morning
prayers were being answered.

Jesus was still
going to come back.

But He had a work to
perform in the Most Holy Place

Now, you might say
what's happening here,

that he was given the command,

go up to the angel, who's
got a little book in his hand,

which we believe
was the Book of Daniel.

And he was told to eat it.

And he says, "When I ate it,

it was as sweet
as honey in my mouth.

But when I had eaten it,
my stomach became bitter."

And then after that
experience, "He said to me,

'You must prophesy
again about many peoples,

nations, tongues and kings.'"

What is all that meaning
in this amazing prediction,

was, it's written in prophecy,

in the Book of Revelation?

We have here the Book
of Daniel being opened up

in the time of the end.

We have here predicted a message

from the Book of
Daniel, the 2,300 year prophecy,

because that was to
reach, you remember,

to the time of the end.

And here, John is invited
to receive that little book.

When we eat something,

you know, we absorb
it into our very being.

And when they heard the
message out of the little book

that was very sweet at first,

When they had eaten it, it
became a bitter experience.

And there were
lightnings, and noises,

and thunderings,
and an earthquake."

After that
experience, John had been told,

"You must preach again."

The very next
verse which is 11:1

says that an angel told John

to measure the temple in heaven.

That was an
amazing revelation too,

because it was the temple,

their
identification of the sanctuary

that was the
cause of the problem.

They had said that the
sanctuary or the temple

was, the earth is
gonna be cleansed by fire.

And here in the
Book of Revelation

in that amazing prediction.

After the sweet experience,
the bitter disappointment,

what were they to preach about?

The next verse says,

"Measure God's
temple in heaven."

Look at the sanctuary,
when you measure something,

you look closely at
it, you take us dimensions,

measure the heavenly sanctuary,

temple of God in heaven.

at the end of that same chapter,

we read that when
the seventh trumpet

is about to sound, that
is, in the time of the end,

become bitter in our belly,

embittering our whole being.

That we had to prophesy again,

small group of people

through the disappointment

were beginning to understand.

they saw it all
had been written,

to encourage them, no doubt,

to hold on,
because God was going to do

great things to them.

Clearly, they've been wrong
in saying that the sanctuary

to be cleansed
was the earth by fire.

That hadn't happened.

But what had happened?

Well, the Lord had to gradually
open their minds to new truth.

And it had to
come from God's Word.

It was the heavenly sanctuary,

but they wanted to
be sure about this.

his disciples, "Behold,

the Lamb of God who takes
away the sin of the world."

Jesus, of
course, was God's lamb.

And when He died on the cross,

He was fulfilling
all those sacrifices

power, a little horn

that represented the
kingdom that followed Greece,

which was Rome.

But Rome had two phases

and we've touched on
this a little earlier.

There was the
pagan phase of Rome,

when they were the
emperors of Rome as an empire.

But then when
that empire went down,

it was replaced by
papal Rome, still Rome.

bit about that earlier.

little horn that came up,

the papal phase that was
to continue for 1260 years.

7 is happening in heaven,

I say that because
there are some people today

who believe that
the judgment takes place

at the Second Coming of Christ.

But not according
to the Book of Daniel.

Very clearly, this
judgment that John,
00:51:32.69\00:51:35.36
that Daniel saw is a judgment
that is taking place in heaven,
00:51:35.39\00:51:40.33
while things are
happening on the earth.
00:51:40.36\00:51:43.67
In other words, we can
call it a pre-Advent judgment.
00:51:43.70\00:51:47.90
It comes and starts just before
the Second Coming of Christ.

But then its purpose,

the purpose of this
judgment is twofold.

Number one...

it will judge
the little horn power

in Daniel 7.

Can I just remind
you, dear friends,

of the little
horn power in Daniel 7,
00:52:06.09\00:52:08.46
is pictured as
murdering God's people.
00:52:08.49\00:52:13.70
It says this little horn power
would make war on God's people.
00:52:13.73\00:52:18.77
And I pointed out tragically,
00:52:18.80\00:52:20.24
when we dealt with this
a few presentations ago,
00:52:20.27\00:52:23.10
that some 50 million
people of God's people
00:52:23.14\00:52:27.14
who were
standing up for the Bible
00:52:27.18\00:52:29.98
were cruelly
executed and murdered
00:52:30.01\00:52:33.58
as a result of
their stand for God,
00:52:33.62\00:52:37.35
and for their
belief and trust in Jesus.
00:52:37.39\00:52:40.26
And this power
therefore needs to be judged.
00:52:40.29\00:52:42.22
And that's what
this is referring to.
00:52:42.26\00:52:44.13
It would be a judgment on
the actions of the little horn,
00:52:44.16\00:52:47.30
but then to also the judgment.

And notice this,
for your encouragement,

this judgment will
affirm the status of the saints,
00:52:53.13\00:52:56.54
those who have
transferred their sins

to the heavenly
sanctuary by confession,

and have received forgiveness
00:53:01.64\00:53:03.18
and the transforming
power of the Holy Spirit.

We have nothing to fear
in the judgment, my friends,

because in this
judgment, God looks at us

and He doesn't see
our sins, He sees Jesus

and His
righteousness, covering us.

That's why the
judgment is good news,

not bad news for
those who trust in Jesus.

And then the most
wonderful news all

in verse 13 of Chapter 7,

it tells us that Jesus
is there in the judgment

to speak on our behalf.

That is
wonderful, wonderful news.

Well, as they continued on,

they found other
text in the Bible

that pointed to the fact
that there is a judgment,

a judgment on all of us

judgment seat of Christ.

But Jesus is there
to be our advocate.

a wonderful
statement that is in a book,

a little book
called Steps to Christ.

This little book
was written to show us

the steps that we
can take to find Jesus.

And in that little book,
the writer has written this,

"Since we are sinful and unholy,

we cannot
perfectly obey the holy law.

We have no
righteousness of our own

with which to meet the
claims of the law of God.

But," and here's
the wonderful news,

"But Christ has made a
way of escape for us..."

And that's for you and for me.

"He lived a sinless life.

He died for us,

and now He
offers to take our sins

and give us His righteousness."

But it's what follows

The Bible tells

we have dealt today
with the explanation

of the sanctuary
and the disappointment,

and how what Jesus
is doing for us today

in this heavenly

have to fear the judgment.
