I wondered why so I began to 00:01:20.31\00:01:25.38 look into it and my intellectual journey went on for years and 00:01:25.41\00:01:29.35 even decades. So what I'm going to do now is share some of that 00:01:29.38\00:01:33.79 with you. And we're going to do it over 13 periods and sessions 00:01:33.82\00:01:38.63 I hope that you will stay with me the whole way. Look at the 00:01:38.66\00:01:43.26 topic we're going to discuss today. God, Fact or Fiction. 00:01:43.30\00:01:48.24 Huge as well as controversial. And in fact if you go into it 00:01:48.27\00:01:53.78 one question will lead to another and yet to another. 00:01:53.81\00:01:57.28 But what we are going to do is face those questions, not shy 00:01:57.31\00:02:03.49 away and face them squarely. Welcome friend to this 00:02:03.52\00:02:08.32 intellectual journey. My main aim is to make you think and 00:02:08.36\00:02:13.83 think critically, think for yourself. So whatever your 00:02:13.86\00:02:17.53 present ideas or philosophies put on your thinking cap and 00:02:17.57\00:02:23.47 come search with me. One of the main reasons these debates never 00:02:23.51\00:02:29.84 come to a satisfying conclusion is because they don't start off 00:02:29.88\00:02:34.32 with the right foot. And what do I mean by that? The sides and 00:02:34.35\00:02:38.75 the people involved in the debate do not sit together and 00:02:38.79\00:02:42.32 decide what it is that will form the base of their 00:02:42.36\00:02:46.46 discussion. In other words, what are the principles that will 00:02:46.49\00:02:50.23 guide them. I call them premises The premises have to set before 00:02:50.27\00:02:56.20 the debate so that everyone is playing the same game otherwise 00:02:56.24\00:03:00.18 if they're not set, there's no base, then we are talking past 00:03:00.21\00:03:05.65 each other, no common bearing and maybe playing a different 00:03:05.68\00:03:10.32 game. So our first task is to set the premises. And that's why 00:03:10.35\00:03:16.66 the first session is The Premises and here we begin at 00:03:16.69\00:03:22.90 the starting point. What is our present position. There are 00:03:22.93\00:03:29.10 three possible positions: Number One: The attitude of a 00:03:29.14\00:03:33.41 disbelieving inquirer. The attitude of a believing inquirer 00:03:33.44\00:03:37.91 and the attitude of a neutral inquirer. Note that they are all 00:03:37.95\00:03:43.62 inquirers. 00:03:43.65\00:03:44.99 In fact, you and I have all three of these attitudes in us. 00:03:45.02\00:03:50.23 And because they all are inquiring attitudes we can flit 00:03:50.26\00:03:54.43 from one to the other so smoothly that we don't even 00:03:54.46\00:03:58.23 notice the change. So we may come to the table with one 00:03:58.27\00:04:02.94 attitude and actually not go to that one that we are using at 00:04:02.97\00:04:07.38 the moment. Thus we may not be aware of what we are really 00:04:07.41\00:04:11.41 doing at that point. What do you mean by these words? Here are 00:04:11.45\00:04:16.15 some descriptions. DISBELIEVING attitude - Dismisses the report 00:04:16.18\00:04:21.12 Prior to thorough investigation. BELIEVING attitude - Accepts 00:04:21.16\00:04:26.29 the report, swallows it before the end of the investigation 00:04:26.33\00:04:30.43 while the INQUIRING attitude - does not initially accept nor 00:04:30.47\00:04:35.97 dismiss, but holds verdict until the investigation is done. 00:04:36.00\00:04:40.78 Here's another piece. The DISBELIEVING attitude - focuses 00:04:40.81\00:04:45.28 on the questions and disregards all the fair evidence. The 00:04:45.31\00:04:50.32 BELIEVING attitude will focus on the evidence and disregard 00:04:50.35\00:04:55.12 all the big questions where as the INQUIRING attitude focuses 00:04:55.16\00:04:59.69 on the weight of evidence and that's all he or she can do. 00:04:59.73\00:05:04.93 You know on this earth we really cannot have final proof. What we 00:05:04.97\00:05:10.67 can have, however, is the weight of evidence. Now you and I may 00:05:10.71\00:05:17.41 inquire with a believing or a disbelieving attitude and think 00:05:17.45\00:05:23.15 we are fair because it's an inquiry. But that is not real 00:05:23.18\00:05:27.09 true inquiry. Because most of us whenever we delve into the 00:05:27.12\00:05:32.26 subject we want to look for evidence that will support our 00:05:32.29\00:05:36.26 pre-existing stance. It is called confirmation bias. 00:05:36.30\00:05:40.44 And here's the definition:... 00:05:40.47\00:05:42.67 Now how many on earth do you think are biased? Everyone: You, 00:05:52.51\00:05:58.79 me, everyone on planet earth is actually biased. So if all of us 00:05:58.82\00:06:02.32 all of us are biased don't call anyone biased and don't be 00:06:02.36\00:06:05.59 calling bias by anyone. The challenge is to become an 00:06:05.63\00:06:11.40 inquiring inquirer or a neutral inquirer. So how do we shift 00:06:11.43\00:06:18.47 away from our biases to really becoming neutral? Well the first 00:06:18.51\00:06:23.75 thing is to address and deal with Confirmation Bias and 00:06:23.78\00:06:30.92 here's how to it. A few points. Number one we confess and 00:06:30.95\00:06:35.99 acknowledge it. You and I are biased. So what do we do with 00:06:36.02\00:06:42.13 that? We make a decision that we will not let that enter into our 00:06:42.16\00:06:46.33 debate. We set it aside. In other words we drop our previous 00:06:46.37\00:06:50.11 beliefs and disbeliefs. But really you can't drop it in a 00:06:50.14\00:06:54.94 moment. What we mean to say that we do not rise up in passionate 00:06:54.98\00:06:59.75 defense of our own beliefs nor do we attack the beliefs and the 00:06:59.78\00:07:05.05 points of the opposing side. If we do that we will avoid 00:07:05.09\00:07:12.56 blind beliefs as well as blind dismissal and then we can engage 00:07:12.59\00:07:17.63 in "neutral inquiry." So what do we mean by "neutral inquiry?" 00:07:17.67\00:07:24.07 Here are some points. Number one: A neutral inquirer 00:07:24.11\00:07:29.48 always makes two 00:07:29.51\00:07:33.58 opposing theories, never just one. No pros and cons of just 00:07:33.62\00:07:40.32 this side. No, he make two opposing theories and then looks 00:07:40.36\00:07:43.76 at both. Why do we want that? That's to avoid what is called 00:07:43.79\00:07:50.00 default conclusions. So what do we mean by default. Let me ask 00:07:50.03\00:07:55.27 you a question. When is a good decision a bad decision? And 00:07:55.30\00:08:02.21 when is a bad decision a good decision? Oh you say, that 00:08:02.24\00:08:07.98 sounds contradictory. But really, wait. If you try to 00:08:08.02\00:08:13.96 answer that, it might be quite insightful. Here's why a good 00:08:13.99\00:08:20.13 decision is a bad decision. If the options facing you and me 00:08:20.16\00:08:25.33 are good, better, and best but we just chose the good. We could 00:08:25.37\00:08:31.87 have gone for the best, but we chose the good. That's a bad 00:08:31.91\00:08:35.94 decision. On the other hand likewise, if the options facing 00:08:35.98\00:08:45.09 us are bad worse and worst then choosing the bad 00:08:45.12\00:08:49.72 is a good decision. In fact, 00:08:49.76\00:08:51.66 of these three, bad, worse, and worst the bad is the best. 00:08:51.69\00:08:56.50 Why do we say this? Because in the discussions that we have on 00:08:56.53\00:09:00.54 this large topic which are controversial we can never make 00:09:00.57\00:09:05.47 a good decision. We can only make bad. And what do you mean 00:09:05.51\00:09:10.08 by bad? We mean that all the belief systems on these topics 00:09:10.11\00:09:15.48 have gaps, discrepancies and and even contradictions. So the 00:09:15.52\00:09:21.16 question really is which one would you take for what we are 00:09:21.19\00:09:27.53 saying with this? Just because it looks good don't just grab to 00:09:27.56\00:09:32.63 that and then discard the others because the others might be 00:09:32.67\00:09:36.94 better. And just because this theory has some questions and 00:09:36.97\00:09:42.11 some discrepancies don't discard it. Because if you discard it 00:09:42.14\00:09:47.85 you might go for something worse In other words, hold on to both 00:09:47.88\00:09:52.99 the sides and look at both. The next two points are that we 00:09:53.02\00:09:57.86 treat both equally and you give both the same chance to win. 00:09:57.89\00:10:03.37 Then you can be sure that the real winner has won. And if you 00:10:03.40\00:10:08.04 really want to get into the nitty gritty of it then we have 00:10:08.07\00:10:12.71 to set the criteria that we will use for our search and for our 00:10:12.74\00:10:17.98 discussion. So let's set the criteria right now. We will lean 00:10:18.01\00:10:23.85 number one on information and evidence, not mere opinion. 00:10:23.89\00:10:29.12 Number two: We will go for logic and common sense, not crass 00:10:29.16\00:10:35.60 illogic. And number three: We will try to reason and explain 00:10:35.63\00:10:42.80 rather than state somethings that are absurd. Socrates said 00:10:42.84\00:10:47.94 these words actually quoted by Plato: Go where the argument 00:10:47.98\00:10:52.98 leads. Don't lead the argument where you want it to go. And 00:10:53.01\00:10:58.32 say it again: Go where the argument leads. Now doing that 00:10:58.35\00:11:05.96 is not all that easy because these are aggressive, big, 00:11:05.99\00:11:09.53 controversial questions actually requires solid, raw courage. 00:11:09.56\00:11:16.07 Because you might find something there that goes 00:11:16.10\00:11:20.34 against what you previously believed. And also you might 00:11:20.38\00:11:23.75 find something there that causes you to change your whole 00:11:23.78\00:11:27.08 lifestyle and behavior. So even though you choose to become 00:11:27.12\00:11:32.75 a neutral inquirer confirmation bias can be really hard to 00:11:32.79\00:11:38.16 overcome. So we need help. Help in creating an atmosphere that 00:11:38.19\00:11:46.60 is conducive to being a neutral inquirer right through. So what 00:11:46.63\00:11:53.17 shall we do about creating that atmosphere? Here's how we do it. 00:11:53.21\00:11:57.08 We require four factors. Four things that we will hold onto 00:11:57.11\00:12:05.45 that will create the atmosphere. Here are the four: Number one: 00:12:05.49\00:12:10.86 Humility. Number two: Honesty. Number three: Calmness and 00:12:10.89\00:12:18.53 Number four: Respect. What do we mean by these words? Humility: 00:12:18.57\00:12:24.44 This is the cardinal, prime, and most essential factor of all. 00:12:24.47\00:12:31.31 If ever we become proud and boastful about our own knowledge 00:12:31.35\00:12:35.98 we've closed the door to what we might get next. So we remain 00:12:36.02\00:12:40.26 humble. Humble, teachable, learning attitude, standing 00:12:40.29\00:12:46.66 small in the face of the vastness and grandeur of the 00:12:46.70\00:12:50.97 universe and all the information that it contains. How little 00:12:51.00\00:12:55.27 we really know. 00:12:55.30\00:12:56.77 That should make us humble. Also somebody else next to us who has 00:12:56.81\00:13:02.48 a lot of knowledge and who obviously is willing to teach. 00:13:02.51\00:13:07.38 We humbly learn from that individual. 00:13:07.42\00:13:09.65 Humility is number one. Honesty: 00:13:09.68\00:13:14.19 Here's a definition: The willingness to give credit to a 00:13:14.22\00:13:20.56 point or argument no matter who brings it to the table, and even 00:13:20.60\00:13:26.10 if that credit has the possibility of destroying my own 00:13:26.13\00:13:29.74 previous stand or position. Did you notice that I put my own 00:13:29.77\00:13:33.38 name there, Subodh Pandit. That is because that is the 00:13:33.41\00:13:36.95 definition I gave. That is the principle I followed when I 00:13:36.98\00:13:42.08 was doing my search. In other words give credit where credit 00:13:42.12\00:13:46.09 is due and withhold credit when it is not due. You know what I 00:13:46.12\00:13:51.93 called it? I called it the wow factor. You've got to say wow 00:13:51.96\00:13:57.10 when a piece of information that's really impressive and it 00:13:57.13\00:14:01.00 amazes you. Don't start first thinking, if I say how well he 00:14:01.04\00:14:05.04 or she might get the credit and not me. No that would not be 00:14:05.07\00:14:09.21 real honesty, say wow. Are you really willing to say wow, are 00:14:09.24\00:14:14.58 you ready to do that give credit Let's check it out. Let's do 00:14:14.62\00:14:20.26 something to see whether we can respond that way. You know pi 00:14:20.29\00:14:28.40 22 over seven is an irregular number. If you really did that 00:14:28.43\00:14:32.20 calculation, 22 divided by seven it would come out to 3.142 and 00:14:32.23\00:14:39.14 then on and on and on in a very haphazard and arbitrary manner. 00:14:39.17\00:14:43.81 There is no pattern to those numbers. So what psychologists 00:14:43.85\00:14:48.68 have said let's use that series as a test for memory. How many 00:14:48.72\00:14:56.29 digits can a person memorize and recite. Do you know what the 00:14:56.32\00:15:00.46 world record is? Most people do not look at that so we may 00:15:00.50\00:15:04.97 not know it. Let me tell you. But why don't you have a guess 00:15:05.00\00:15:08.00 at what might be the world record. A few years ago it was 00:15:08.04\00:15:12.17 held by an Indian and then a Japanese and then I believe 00:15:12.21\00:15:16.58 the last one went back to an Indian. So the last record that 00:15:16.61\00:15:20.72 I know of pi was recited to the 70 thousandth digit before the 00:15:20.75\00:15:28.29 first mistake was made. Did you say wow to that? Did you give 00:15:28.32\00:15:33.46 the credit? If you did, well we're on the same page. Then we 00:15:33.50\00:15:37.60 are ready to give credit where credit is due. How about 00:15:37.63\00:15:41.57 calmness? You know anger and rage fights you own clear 00:15:41.60\00:15:49.64 thinking and good judgment, not those of your opponent! So when 00:15:49.68\00:15:55.42 your angry what you say is not exactly what you want to say, at 00:15:55.45\00:16:00.46 all what you want to think. Now sometimes during what I say in 00:16:00.49\00:16:06.06 the next 13 segments, sometimes I will state things that might 00:16:06.09\00:16:14.14 sound jarring to you. Don't get angry. Don't get upset. Here's 00:16:14.17\00:16:21.84 what you do. Just say to yourself, I don't agree with 00:16:21.88\00:16:26.38 that. So the way I'm going to address that is to get a good 00:16:26.41\00:16:30.09 argument against that so that my argument knocks off his 00:16:30.12\00:16:34.39 argument. Well really that's most welcome. So don't get upset 00:16:34.42\00:16:39.19 And how do you get that really good argument to knock off mine? 00:16:39.23\00:16:43.63 It is to stay calm. Calmness which is the result of humility 00:16:43.67\00:16:50.44 and honesty will give the best chance to you and to me to make 00:16:50.47\00:16:56.44 good arguments to form a strong side which will maybe even win 00:16:56.48\00:17:02.25 over the other side. How about respect? Respect is not 00:17:02.28\00:17:07.56 agreement, not admiration. We often use it as a synonym for 00:17:07.59\00:17:12.76 those but really respect is only giving to others the right to 00:17:12.79\00:17:19.93 make their own inquiry, their own final decision without us 00:17:19.97\00:17:25.34 looking down our noses at them and even calling them names. 00:17:25.37\00:17:29.18 No, we uphold their dignity at all times and we 00:17:29.21\00:17:37.02 expect them to hold our dignity up, for the sake of mutual 00:17:37.05\00:17:41.69 respect. So we've got to create an atmosphere with these four: 00:17:41.72\00:17:48.63 Humility, Honesty, Calmness, Respect. Now with these we'll 00:17:48.66\00:17:54.90 get to the big question. I call it the great divide. A. Atheism 00:17:54.94\00:18:02.31 says God is nonexistent and fictitious. B. The believing 00:18:02.34\00:18:09.18 side says God is in existence and factual. Now before we dive 00:18:09.22\00:18:14.82 into that, there is a question that some people ask and the 00:18:14.86\00:18:19.13 question is do we need God? And His existence. Why not leave 00:18:19.16\00:18:25.63 the question completely out? What difference does it make? 00:18:25.67\00:18:28.97 What difference does it make? Do you know the answer to that 00:18:29.00\00:18:33.31 can be twofold. Number one: It makes no difference at all. 00:18:33.34\00:18:38.31 And number two: It makes a huge difference. Both these responses 00:18:38.35\00:18:45.05 depend on a big if. So here's the first if: If our human life 00:18:45.09\00:18:51.09 let's say a hundred years, is the sum total of our existence, 00:18:51.13\00:18:55.83 what lies beyond it is absolute nothingness, total 00:18:55.86\00:19:00.70 oblivion. Then nobody needs God. Do you know that both the sides 00:19:00.74\00:19:06.98 agree to this. It's just plain common sense. So I'm going to 00:19:07.01\00:19:11.25 read to you now two statements from each of the sides. Here's 00:19:11.28\00:19:17.69 Quentin Smith, an atheist, a confirmed atheist. Look at his 00:19:17.72\00:19:23.19 words. He wrote this in a book Theism, Atheism and Big Bang 00:19:23.22\00:19:25.96 Cosmology. The only reasonable belief is that we came from 00:19:25.99\00:19:31.57 nothing, by nothing and for nothing. On the other side, King 00:19:31.60\00:19:37.61 Solomon, a believer, who wrote out in a religious book these 00:19:37.64\00:19:42.14 words: What happens to the fool will happen to me also...the 00:19:42.18\00:19:47.65 fate of the humans and the fate of animals is the same; as one 00:19:47.68\00:19:51.45 dies, so dies the other. Look, nobody needs God. We live or die 00:19:51.49\00:19:58.69 like a king or a fool. Nobody needs God to live or die like an 00:19:58.73\00:20:04.53 animal or a human. The other side: If the supernatural realm 00:20:04.57\00:20:11.71 is real and God does exist then a utopia of some kind called a 00:20:11.74\00:20:17.38 heaven or a paradise or nirvana could be a reasonable theory. 00:20:17.41\00:20:24.02 And if that is the actual goal of our life and not what Quentin 00:20:24.05\00:20:29.82 Smith said, well then you and I will have to agree to at least 00:20:29.86\00:20:35.13 two things. Number One: We as humans are inherently totally 00:20:35.16\00:20:41.57 incapable of getting there. Number Two: We need God in this 00:20:41.60\00:20:49.21 life to show us the path of how to get there and also to provide 00:20:49.24\00:20:53.72 for us when we get there. We can't take anything from here to 00:20:53.75\00:20:57.75 there. So we do need God for that. So finally do we need God? 00:20:57.79\00:21:05.16 No, if the supernatural realm is false and a fictitious and yes 00:21:05.19\00:21:13.00 absolutely yes. If that realm does exist and reaching there 00:21:13.03\00:21:16.67 is our goal. So now the pertinent question. Is the 00:21:16.71\00:21:22.11 supernatural realm factual and true? Does God truly exist? 00:21:22.14\00:21:28.58 Getting to that. Here the challenge:... 00:21:28.62\00:21:32.19 Give them all the benefits and if you're honest well take away 00:21:51.51\00:21:57.45 all the credits that are not supposed to be given and when 00:21:57.48\00:22:00.62 you do it fairly you and I will be sure then that the real 00:22:00.65\00:22:05.65 winner has won. And then we can give evidence for what we are 00:22:05.69\00:22:10.73 have just found. One of the ways is the implement the Pan Process 00:22:10.76\00:22:18.07 Now I'm sure you haven't heard of that Pan Process. So let me 00:22:18.10\00:22:21.47 tell you what it means, what it says. Here's the Pan Process: 00:22:21.50\00:22:25.77 This is a method of inquiry that examines both options equally. 00:22:25.81\00:22:32.65 What do we mean by that? What does the word pan mean? Number 00:22:32.68\00:22:38.32 one: It means going across. So like we said earlier both stay 00:22:38.35\00:22:42.42 on only one side, go across to the other, like Pan American 00:22:42.46\00:22:47.63 Airlines. It goes across America You don't stay in one place. 00:22:47.66\00:22:51.10 Number Two: Pan also means sifting. They panned for gold 00:22:51.13\00:22:58.84 way back in the 1840s during the gold rush. They took a pan and 00:22:58.87\00:23:06.21 dipped it into the water, pulled out some rocks and hopefully 00:23:06.25\00:23:10.29 some nuggets and the force of the water would take away the 00:23:10.32\00:23:14.09 lighter rocks and keep the heavier nuggets in the pan. 00:23:14.12\00:23:18.36 Panning, sifting, choosing the valuable, letting go of the 00:23:18.39\00:23:25.10 ordinary. Pan also happens to be the first three letters of my 00:23:25.13\00:23:29.67 family name. Now you know where I got that word from, Pan 00:23:29.70\00:23:34.18 Process, and formulated that so that I could use it in my 00:23:34.21\00:23:40.52 search, so that I could show to myself that I was going to be 00:23:40.55\00:23:46.99 fair to both the topics, to both the theories, to both the 00:23:47.02\00:23:53.50 claims. So what does it look like? Here's what it looked 00:23:53.53\00:23:56.56 like. The Pan Process requires four columns of argument. One: A 00:23:56.60\00:24:03.81 pro. And second, a con for each of the sides. God exists, God 00:24:03.84\00:24:10.58 does not exist. Pro and con, two columns. Pro and con on this 00:24:10.61\00:24:15.02 side and another two columns; four columns. For example: 00:24:15.05\00:24:19.39 Column one would be arguments for A - Atheism. Column two: 00:24:19.42\00:24:25.09 Arguments against the believing side, against B. Column three: 00:24:25.13\00:24:29.96 Arguments for belief for the B for the believing side. And 00:24:30.00\00:24:35.87 column four: Arguments against A against atheistic side. So when 00:24:35.90\00:24:42.18 you do this I believe you and I can look at this and we can 00:24:42.21\00:24:47.95 agree that this is really a very fair process. We are looking at 00:24:47.98\00:24:54.52 both the sides. And when we do that we shouldn't try to push 00:24:54.56\00:24:58.63 down one to then try to pull up the other. Just let the 00:24:58.66\00:25:03.93 arguments speak for themselves. So that is what we will do. 00:25:03.97\00:25:08.70 We'll do the Pan Process. So now. What have we said so far? 00:25:08.74\00:25:15.01 The premises have to be set. If we don't set the premises then 00:25:15.04\00:25:21.38 our words can fly past one another and we will be on 00:25:21.42\00:25:24.85 different wave lengths. So we set the premises. And this is 00:25:24.89\00:25:28.19 what we said the premises would look like: First we assess our 00:25:28.22\00:25:31.99 present attitude: Am I a disbelieving inquirer, a 00:25:32.03\00:25:37.47 believing inquirer or a neutral inquirer? And then we confess 00:25:37.50\00:25:43.17 and put aside confirmation bias. Our biases. And choose to remain 00:25:43.20\00:25:49.64 a neutral inquirer, an inquiring inquirer, not a believing 00:25:49.68\00:25:55.05 inquirer, not a disbelieving inquirer. And then we implement 00:25:55.08\00:25:59.92 the traits or the characteristics 00:25:59.95\00:26:02.39 of a neutral inquirer. And what are those? We always look 00:26:02.42\00:26:07.20 for at least two options, two theories and we look for the 00:26:07.23\00:26:13.37 pros and cons of this and the pros and cons of that meaning 00:26:13.40\00:26:17.41 we give both the same chance to win. And if you really want to 00:26:17.44\00:26:22.24 do that well then we have to set the criteria and we set the 00:26:22.28\00:26:26.61 criteria. You and I did. We will go for evidence, for reason, for 00:26:26.65\00:26:34.39 logic. Those are things that will set the criteria. And once 00:26:34.42\00:26:38.69 we have set the criteria then we will create an atmosphere 00:26:38.73\00:26:42.66 that will help us remain in the inquiring mode at all times. 00:26:42.70\00:26:49.17 It is made up of number one: Humility. Number two: Honesty. 00:26:49.20\00:26:55.58 Number three: Calmness and number four: Respect.
