Welcome back to Books of the Book and we have been 00:00:07.98\00:00:09.92 studying the book of Galatians and we are in Galatians 00:00:09.96\00:00:11.87 Chapter 6 and I want to look again at verse 12. 00:00:11.90\00:00:16.44 The apostle Paul is making a point that these false 00:00:16.47\00:00:20.57 teachers who had seduced the Galatian church wanted 00:00:20.60\00:00:24.68 "to compel them to be circumcised only that they may 00:00:24.72\00:00:27.94 "not suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. " 00:00:27.98\00:00:30.84 We are talking about the tendency Jim, that we have 00:00:30.88\00:00:35.16 to want to avoid living in such a way that draws out 00:00:35.19\00:00:39.44 the opposition of the world. 00:00:39.48\00:00:40.70 We talked about in 1 Timothy, sorry 2 Timothy 3:12 00:00:40.74\00:00:44.55 where it says all who live godly in Christ Jesus shall 00:00:44.58\00:00:48.34 suffer persecution and I think there are probably a 00:00:48.37\00:00:51.95 our viewers that are aware, I have talked and read many 00:00:51.98\00:00:55.52 articles from many different denominations and 00:00:55.56\00:00:58.83 nondenominational churches that have recognized a 00:00:58.86\00:01:02.68 tendency in recent years that Christianity has become 00:01:02.72\00:01:06.50 more and more secularized. 00:01:06.53\00:01:08.07 The reason is because, we will say we are just trying 00:01:08.10\00:01:12.78 to be more accessible to the world. 00:01:12.81\00:01:15.93 Trying to reach the postmodern world and these types 00:01:15.97\00:01:19.04 of things, but I fear the reality is just exactly what 00:01:19.08\00:01:22.12 Paul is saying here, we do not want to suffer 00:01:22.15\00:01:24.41 persecution for our belief. 00:01:24.45\00:01:25.67 So some of the things that have happened is social 00:01:25.70\00:01:28.62 drinking has become more acceptable in the Christian 00:01:28.65\00:01:31.52 world where it used to be that drinking was something 00:01:31.56\00:01:33.97 a Christian when do, they didn't smoke, they didn't 00:01:34.01\00:01:36.71 drink and now they say that was back in the old days. 00:01:36.75\00:01:38.96 It's a lot easier when you are out to work with someone 00:01:38.99\00:01:41.17 to just do what they are doing and you can justify 00:01:41.20\00:01:44.55 that by saying I'm just trying to fit in and you 00:01:44.58\00:01:47.89 avoid the persecution. 00:01:47.93\00:01:49.02 That's right, and secular music, rock concerts, and 00:01:49.06\00:01:53.17 there's Christian rock today and things like that 00:01:53.21\00:01:57.69 honestly has concerned the number of people because 00:01:57.73\00:02:01.71 it used to be these things were considered only 00:02:01.74\00:02:05.65 secular and worldly and now they are finding their way 00:02:05.68\00:02:10.03 into the church and again I fear whether it be fashionable 00:02:10.07\00:02:14.38 dress, or whatever it happens to be. 00:02:14.41\00:02:18.29 It is a desire to avoid that persecution that comes from 00:02:18.33\00:02:25.16 being different from the world. 00:02:25.19\00:02:27.41 This is what Paul ascribes this false teaching of the 00:02:27.44\00:02:31.51 Galatians, these false teachers, these Judaizing teachers 00:02:31.54\00:02:35.57 that is what he ascribes it to. 00:02:35.61\00:02:37.11 Their desire to really avoid the offense of the cross. 00:02:37.15\00:02:40.49 That is exactly right, and then right after saying that 00:02:40.53\00:02:43.84 in verse 12, which is where we have been reading. 00:02:43.88\00:02:46.29 It says that they try to compel you to be circumcised 00:02:46.32\00:02:48.70 only that they may not suffer persecution. 00:02:48.73\00:02:51.01 In verse 13 it says, "for not even those who are 00:02:51.04\00:02:54.34 "circumcised keep the law, but they desire to have you " 00:02:54.37\00:02:57.15 circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. " 00:02:57.19\00:02:59.55 He is trying to help them to see, be careful who you are 00:02:59.58\00:03:04.52 trusting here, back in the days of Jesus he said to those 00:03:04.56\00:03:09.46 who are at that time following and yet critically 00:03:09.49\00:03:12.76 analyzing his ministry, he said to speak about the law 00:03:12.79\00:03:16.88 of Moses yet none of you keeps the law. 00:03:16.92\00:03:20.22 Why is it that you try to kill me? 00:03:20.25\00:03:22.38 They were in the process of planning to kill the 00:03:22.42\00:03:25.64 Son of God and yet they were promoting themselves as 00:03:25.68\00:03:28.86 law keepers and so here that is what the 00:03:28.90\00:03:30.91 apostle Paul is saying. 00:03:30.94\00:03:31.99 These people that you are trusting are pushing 00:03:32.02\00:03:35.31 circumcision, but they are not keeping the law themselves. 00:03:35.34\00:03:38.22 There are various different ways that we could look at 00:03:38.25\00:03:41.34 that, but is just another point to show that this idea 00:03:41.37\00:03:44.86 is that circumcision was a substitute for obedience. 00:03:44.89\00:03:47.81 That is what was really happening with these false 00:03:47.85\00:03:50.19 teachers. - that's right and I think that is an 00:03:50.23\00:03:52.50 important point that our viewers need to understand. 00:03:52.53\00:03:56.82 The concept from so many is that these Galatians were 00:03:56.86\00:04:01.11 wanting to go with this gospel of circumcision, 00:04:01.14\00:04:03.95 they were obedient. 00:04:03.99\00:04:05.98 And repeatedly Paul has brought out that they were 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.93 everything but obedient, they did not keep the law. 00:04:08.96\00:04:11.43 He makes that point very clear here, they were not 00:04:11.47\00:04:13.97 law keepers because they were trusting in the flesh. 00:04:14.01\00:04:16.48 So he builds on that in verse 14 where he says, 00:04:16.51\00:04:21.46 "but God forbid that I should boast except" because 00:04:21.49\00:04:26.41 they were boasting in the flesh, but he says, 00:04:26.44\00:04:28.99 "God for bit that I should boast except in the 00:04:29.02\00:04:31.50 "cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has 00:04:31.54\00:04:35.76 "been crucified to me, and I to the world. " 00:04:35.79\00:04:39.43 That's powerful, and this verse is an allusion to an 00:04:39.46\00:04:44.49 Old Testament verse in the book of Jeremiah and 00:04:44.53\00:04:48.11 maybe we can turn there to Jeremiah 9:23 because the 00:04:48.15\00:04:52.04 apostle Paul seems to be taking the language directly 00:04:52.08\00:04:56.35 from Jeremiah and in verse 23 of Jeremiah 9 is says, 00:04:56.38\00:05:00.53 "thus says the Lord: let not the wise man glory in his 00:05:00.56\00:05:04.19 "wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, 00:05:04.22\00:05:07.54 "nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him 00:05:07.58\00:05:11.00 "who glories glory in this, that he understands and 00:05:11.04\00:05:14.39 "knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising loving- 00:05:14.43\00:05:17.39 "kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. 00:05:17.42\00:05:20.35 "For in these I delight, says the Lord. " 00:05:20.39\00:05:23.27 So that is a very clear parallel where he said I am 00:05:23.30\00:05:26.51 not going to glory anything, the apostle Paul said. 00:05:26.55\00:05:29.79 Except for the cross of Jesus Christ and here he is 00:05:29.82\00:05:32.73 drawing from the fact that back in the book of Jeremiah 00:05:32.76\00:05:36.49 it tells us not to glory in wisdom, or might, or riches, 00:05:36.52\00:05:40.21 but only to glory in knowing Me. 00:05:40.25\00:05:42.96 That is a powerful thought, in other words the cross of 00:05:43.00\00:05:46.87 Jesus Christ is how we come to know God. 00:05:46.90\00:05:50.65 It is through the cross that we find out that Jesus Christ 00:05:50.68\00:05:54.33 wants a personal relationship with us. 00:05:54.36\00:05:56.36 That He is willing to give His life for us. 00:05:56.39\00:05:58.32 The love of God is revealed through the cross of Christ. 00:05:58.35\00:06:01.68 So if we want to know God intimately, we find that in the 00:06:01.71\00:06:05.14 cross and if we can know and understand God, that is what 00:06:05.17\00:06:08.56 we should glory in. 00:06:08.60\00:06:09.57 All of these other things are given to us by God which is 00:06:09.58\00:06:13.58 why many times those who are wise, those who are mighty, 00:06:13.61\00:06:17.54 those who are rich are not the ones who come in through 00:06:17.57\00:06:21.12 the Gospel and there is one verse or passage in the 00:06:21.16\00:06:24.68 New Testament that touches on this. 00:06:24.71\00:06:25.98 I thought maybe I could just read that together with you. 00:06:26.01\00:06:29.42 1 Corinthians, so if you go to the New Testament Mark, 00:06:29.46\00:06:33.38 Luke, Matthew, John, Acts, Romans and 1 Corinthians. 00:06:33.41\00:06:37.90 In Corinthians 1:26 it says, "for you see your calling" 00:06:37.93\00:06:41.69 this is the apostle Paul again, "for you see your calling 00:06:41.72\00:06:44.86 "brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, 00:06:44.90\00:06:48.62 "not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God 00:06:48.66\00:06:51.77 "has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to 00:06:51.80\00:06:54.85 "shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of 00:06:54.89\00:06:57.50 "the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 00:06:57.54\00:07:00.98 "and the base things" that word base means insignificant, 00:07:01.01\00:07:04.34 insignificant things, " of the world and the things which 00:07:04.37\00:07:07.55 "our despised God has chosen, and the things which are 00:07:07.59\00:07:10.52 "not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.45 "flesh should glory in His presence. 00:07:13.49\00:07:16.06 God wants us recognize our need and so those who end up 00:07:16.09\00:07:21.58 being called, He calls everyone but those that respond 00:07:21.62\00:07:26.24 to call end up being those who recognize that they are 00:07:26.27\00:07:30.39 not the smartest, not the richest, not the most popular. 00:07:30.43\00:07:34.34 In many people's eyes they may be insignificant, but they 00:07:34.38\00:07:38.43 seem to be the ones who respond to the call to come to the 00:07:38.47\00:07:42.49 Gospel feast because they won't glory in the presence 00:07:42.52\00:07:46.64 of God, and God needs all the glory to come to Him 00:07:46.68\00:07:50.73 because He is the one who has provided all these things 00:07:50.76\00:07:54.57 for us, if we take glory for ourselves, if we have some 00:07:54.60\00:07:57.76 sort of sense that we are greater or better than others 00:07:57.79\00:08:01.48 then we can never truly understand what the cross of 00:08:01.52\00:08:05.18 Jesus Christ means to us. 00:08:05.21\00:08:06.79 You know Jim that is the thing about this. 00:08:06.82\00:08:09.15 When we are talking about not boasting in anything 00:08:09.18\00:08:13.86 that is in us, it is hard for us sometimes to constantly 00:08:13.89\00:08:18.90 admit that in my flesh dwells no good thing. 00:08:18.94\00:08:22.06 Then we tend to want to think that we are worthless in 00:08:22.09\00:08:25.72 God's sight and it is a strange dichotomy where God wants 00:08:25.76\00:08:29.36 us to realize this is your fallen condition. 00:08:29.39\00:08:31.53 But I love you where you are and I am going to do for you 00:08:31.57\00:08:35.28 what you can't do for yourself. 00:08:35.32\00:08:36.83 I believe the apostle Paul really magnifies that point 00:08:36.86\00:08:41.67 in 2 Corinthians 12, and here Paul sharing his own experience 00:08:41.70\00:08:46.47 and this is one of the most precious passages. 00:08:46.50\00:08:48.75 It is one of the most encouraging passages to me in 00:08:48.78\00:08:50.43 Scripture, this has been a blessing in my experience and 00:08:50.46\00:08:53.31 probably many of our viewers. 00:08:53.34\00:08:54.79 It says in 2 Corinthians 12:9, Jesus is speaking to Paul 00:08:54.82\00:09:00.12 I have read letters here in my Bible. 00:09:00.15\00:09:02.02 It says, "and He said to me, My grace is sufficient for 00:09:02.05\00:09:05.26 "you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. 00:09:05.30\00:09:11.66 "Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my 00:09:11.69\00:09:17.99 "infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. " 00:09:18.02\00:09:22.43 So the idea here is that you could say, sometimes people 00:09:22.47\00:09:26.08 say I'm not worth anything, I'm not good at anything. 00:09:26.12\00:09:29.62 Praise the Lord because now I can boast in the fact that 00:09:29.65\00:09:33.12 in my weakness God's strength is made perfect. 00:09:33.15\00:09:37.80 He goes on in verse 10 to say, "if therefore I take 00:09:37.83\00:09:40.99 "pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, 00:09:41.02\00:09:44.32 "in persecutions, in distress, for Christ's sake. 00:09:44.35\00:09:47.61 "For when I am weak, then I am strong. " 00:09:47.64\00:09:51.48 Why? Because when I am weak I recognize my need of 00:09:51.52\00:09:54.57 Christ and cling more firmly to Him. 00:09:54.61\00:09:57.12 Right, and when that power of Christ is resting upon 00:09:57.15\00:09:59.87 him it can't be denied. 00:09:59.90\00:10:03.70 The power of a changed life, taking someone who 00:10:03.73\00:10:07.74 is weak, taking someone who is sinful, taking someone 00:10:07.78\00:10:12.91 with none of this high exalted stature in the eyes of 00:10:12.95\00:10:17.88 the world, is the very evidence of Christ's power than 00:10:17.92\00:10:21.93 the Gospel of Christ is worth all the world to us. 00:10:21.96\00:10:25.41 So it is very weakness that we have that causes Christ 00:10:25.44\00:10:28.85 to be uplifted. - that is right! 00:10:28.88\00:10:30.35 You know I think we need to go back briefly, to Jeremiah 00:10:30.39\00:10:34.68 Chapter 9 where you recall that we were looking at a 00:10:34.71\00:10:38.79 passage where the apostle Paul seemed to be drawing his 00:10:38.82\00:10:42.61 language from and we talked in verse 23 and 24 about 00:10:42.64\00:10:46.62 how we shouldn't glory in wisdom, or might, or riches, 00:10:46.66\00:10:50.53 and then in verse 24 it said we should glory in the fact 00:10:50.57\00:10:54.41 that we understand and know Him. 00:10:54.44\00:10:56.21 But then notice verse 25, and the apostle Paul I believe 00:10:56.25\00:11:00.14 purposefully is drawing the language out of this passage 00:11:00.17\00:11:04.02 because his hearers probably knew exactly 00:11:04.06\00:11:06.90 where this was going. 00:11:06.94\00:11:08.28 At least the Jewish Christians in that day would recognize 00:11:08.31\00:11:12.60 exactly what that language was coming from. 00:11:12.64\00:11:15.30 Jeremiah 9:25, "we hope the days are coming, says the 00:11:15.34\00:11:18.87 "Lord that I will punish all who are circumcised 00:11:18.91\00:11:22.04 "with the uncircumcised. " 00:11:22.08\00:11:24.38 Now what that means is that the apostle Paul was drawing 00:11:24.41\00:11:28.73 language that was connected with circumcision. 00:11:28.76\00:11:30.95 It was the exact issue that he was dealing with in Galatia 00:11:30.98\00:11:33.81 He was essentially saying you can't glory in circumcision. 00:11:33.85\00:11:36.65 Here there was no distinction made even back here in 00:11:36.68\00:11:40.13 Jeremiah. -well he says further in the next verse 26, 00:11:40.17\00:11:42.95 "for these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house 00:11:42.99\00:11:45.74 "of Israel are uncircumcised in heart. " 00:11:45.78\00:11:47.77 That's right, that's right so again circumcision is 00:11:47.81\00:11:50.62 nothing, uncircumcision is nothing, keeping the 00:11:50.65\00:11:53.43 Commandments of God is what matters. 00:11:53.46\00:11:55.00 It is interesting sometimes when people hear Galatians 00:11:55.04\00:11:57.98 I have met people who have made this point that when you 00:11:58.02\00:12:00.80 want to talk about the importance of obeying God you 00:12:00.84\00:12:03.59 are teaching a Christ plus something gospel. 00:12:03.62\00:12:06.03 We have already gone over Galatians Chapter 3 of where 00:12:06.06\00:12:09.00 it says the Gospel is the schoolmaster to lead us unto 00:12:09.03\00:12:12.02 Christ, you take the law out and you don't need Christ. 00:12:12.06\00:12:15.17 You don't need the Gospel, what is the good news for a 00:12:15.21\00:12:18.29 person who is not condemned by the law of God? 00:12:18.32\00:12:20.12 The whole idea is that the law and the Gospel go hand-in- 00:12:20.15\00:12:23.09 hand so the price plus some thing gospel, no the Gospel is 00:12:23.12\00:12:26.02 the answer to the condemnation that comes from law. 00:12:26.06\00:12:29.10 If we are justified by faith, we know that faith 00:12:29.14\00:12:32.11 establishes the law, so there is no adding the law to 00:12:32.14\00:12:36.03 Christ because the law is embodied in Christ. 00:12:36.07\00:12:38.79 If you have Christ in the heart than the law is going to 00:12:38.83\00:12:41.55 be lived out in our life. 00:12:41.58\00:12:43.01 You know Jim, Paul hits the heart of the matter in 00:12:43.05\00:12:45.63 Philippians 3:3 where he writes, "for we are the 00:12:45.66\00:12:48.81 "circumcision who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice 00:12:48.85\00:12:51.86 "in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh. " 00:12:51.90\00:12:54.88 That is an excellent verse. 00:12:54.91\00:12:56.47 You know we have come to the end of our study of the 00:12:56.50\00:12:59.36 book of Galatians and I can't think of no better way to 00:12:59.39\00:13:01.84 conclude what the apostle Paul was trying to tell those 00:13:01.87\00:13:04.89 believers, rejoice in Christ Jesus and that is the heart 00:13:04.92\00:13:07.90 of the Gospel and these believers have begun to put 00:13:07.94\00:13:10.85 confidence in the flesh and sought to live the Christian 00:13:10.89\00:13:13.86 life without a union with Christ. 00:13:13.90\00:13:16.05 But what that union with Christ then the Spirit of God 00:13:16.09\00:13:19.24 comes in and being born of the Spirit of God we can 00:13:19.28\00:13:22.36 live out the law that they were so zealously trying to 00:13:22.39\00:13:25.43 keep but never could. 00:13:25.47\00:13:27.02 Thank you for joining us and may God bless you! 00:13:27.06\00:13:29.51
