Welcome to Books of the Book, I am Pastor Mark Howard 00:00:22.33\00:00:24.68 Pastor of the Emmanuel Institute of evangelism for the 00:00:24.72\00:00:26.72 Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventist as well 00:00:26.76\00:00:28.69 as the Pastor for the Gobels Seventh-day Adventist church 00:00:28.72\00:00:30.84 in Gobels Michigan and I am here at my co-host, 00:00:30.87\00:00:33.02 my brother Jim. 00:00:33.06\00:00:34.03 Yes, my name is Jim Howard and I am the Pastor of the 00:00:34.04\00:00:36.58 Detroit Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church and 00:00:36.61\00:00:39.14 South Lyon Church Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:39.17\00:00:40.98 both in Michigan. 00:00:41.01\00:00:42.38 And we have been studying the book of Galatians, we are 00:00:42.42\00:00:45.81 actually going to conclude our study today in Galatians 00:00:45.85\00:00:49.91 Chapter 6 and it has been fantastic message the apostle 00:00:49.95\00:00:54.12 Paul has been delivering here about the one and 00:00:54.15\00:00:56.21 only true gospel. 00:00:56.24\00:00:57.55 Jim, he caps it off with his heart appeal to the Galatian 00:00:57.57\00:01:03.36 believers, this church he raised up. 00:01:03.40\00:01:06.74 We are going to Galatians Chapter 6 and if you have your 00:01:06.77\00:01:10.38 Bible nearby go ahead and grab it and turn with us in 00:01:10.42\00:01:13.83 your Bible to the New Testament book of Galatians. 00:01:13.87\00:01:16.66 You go to the New Testament Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, 00:01:16.70\00:01:19.64 Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:19.68\00:01:23.05 We are going to Galatians Chapter 6 and we're going to 00:01:23.09\00:01:26.43 start in verse 11. 00:01:26.46\00:01:28.11 Galatians 6:11 the apostle Paul says, "see what large 00:01:28.15\00:01:32.93 "letters I have written to you with my own hand!" 00:01:32.96\00:01:37.53 Initially as we read that Jim, it doesn't communicate 00:01:37.57\00:01:42.10 a lot, what is he talking about? 00:01:42.14\00:01:46.07 - what are these large letters? - Right! 00:01:46.10\00:01:48.07 So he's writing something and was he boasting in his writing? 00:01:48.11\00:01:50.72 When we realized what the background is here it really 00:01:50.76\00:01:56.32 tells us a lot about the apostle Paul. 00:01:56.36\00:01:57.93 You see Paul had a challenge of some sort, evidently 00:01:57.97\00:02:02.50 with his eye sight and if we go back to 2 Corinthians 00:02:02.53\00:02:07.03 in Chapter 12 Paul talks about having 00:02:07.06\00:02:08.82 a thorn in the flesh. - right! 00:02:08.86\00:02:10.42 Most scholars believe that that thorn in the flesh 00:02:10.46\00:02:13.25 had something to do with his impaired eyesight after 00:02:13.28\00:02:16.01 viewing the Lord Jesus glorified on the road to Damascus. 00:02:16.04\00:02:20.02 We pick up a little bit of that idea in the book of 00:02:20.06\00:02:24.31 Galatians 4:15 where he was talking about the Galatian 00:02:24.35\00:02:28.96 believers and how much they had at one time been willing 00:02:29.00\00:02:33.58 to sacrifice for him. 00:02:33.61\00:02:34.83 He says in Galatians 4:15, "what then was the blessing you 00:02:34.86\00:02:38.33 "enjoyed? For I bear you witness, that if possible, 00:02:38.37\00:02:42.01 "you would have plucked out your own eyes and given 00:02:42.05\00:02:45.64 "then to me. " So the idea was there was something 00:02:45.67\00:02:49.23 with his eyes that were impaired. 00:02:49.26\00:02:52.42 Something else that we find is that Paul often had his 00:02:52.45\00:02:55.41 letters written by a scribe, but then he would sign 00:02:55.45\00:02:58.38 them with his own hand. 00:02:58.41\00:02:59.39 For example 1 Corinthians 16:21, if we turn there we 00:02:59.42\00:03:04.89 see, notice it says here, "the salutation with my 00:03:04.93\00:03:10.36 "own hand-Paul's. " 00:03:10.39\00:03:13.05 In other words he would have somebody else write the 00:03:13.09\00:03:15.38 letter and then he would sign it, evidently because 00:03:15.41\00:03:17.78 with his in paired eyesight it was harder for him, 00:03:17.81\00:03:21.19 he didn't have glasses so when he was trying to write 00:03:21.22\00:03:23.96 these things out it was hard for him to focus on what 00:03:24.00\00:03:26.70 he was writing, so someone else would write and 00:03:26.73\00:03:28.88 he would sign it. - just to give the authenticity! 00:03:28.91\00:03:31.02 - just to give an authenticity. 00:03:31.06\00:03:32.35 So when we coming into Galatians 6:11 and he says, 00:03:32.39\00:03:36.09 "see with what large letters I have written to you. " 00:03:36.12\00:03:39.30 In other words in order for him to see what he was 00:03:39.34\00:03:42.48 writing, he had to write really big. 00:03:42.52\00:03:43.94 His point to the Galatians is that I have not had 00:03:43.97\00:03:46.80 somebody else write this letter, I'm not just signing it. 00:03:46.83\00:03:49.26 I myself have written this whole letter. 00:03:49.30\00:03:52.12 It's communicating to us the burden that 00:03:52.16\00:03:54.95 Paul had for these people. 00:03:54.98\00:03:56.64 If we continue there in Galatians 6:12, he starts 00:03:56.68\00:04:03.34 entering deeper into this appeal. 00:04:03.37\00:04:06.21 It says, "as many as desire to make a good showing in 00:04:06.25\00:04:09.85 "the flesh, these would compel you to be circumcised. " 00:04:09.88\00:04:13.49 He's talking about these Judaizing Christians and the 00:04:13.52\00:04:17.06 theme of our discussion through- out the study of Galatians 00:04:17.09\00:04:20.03 who came in with a perverted gospel in which they said 00:04:20.06\00:04:24.16 you can believe in Jesus Christ but if you really want 00:04:24.19\00:04:28.25 to be saved you will have to be circumcised. 00:04:28.29\00:04:30.33 Circumcision became somewhat of a substitute for faith 00:04:30.37\00:04:33.62 in Christ, a substitute of genuine obedience. 00:04:33.66\00:04:36.19 Then he says, "these who will compel you to be 00:04:36.22\00:04:38.68 "circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution 00:04:38.72\00:04:42.83 "for the cross of Christ. For not even those who are 00:04:42.86\00:04:46.24 "circumcised keep the law, but they desired to have 00:04:46.28\00:04:49.28 "you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. " 00:04:49.32\00:04:52.36 Right here in verse 12 it says, as many as desire 00:04:52.39\00:04:55.40 "to make a showing in the flesh. 00:04:55.43\00:04:57.64 These Judaizing Christians who are deceiving the 00:04:57.68\00:05:01.22 Galatians believers that Paul had brought in through the 00:05:01.25\00:05:05.95 gospel, their motives were not totally pure. 00:05:05.98\00:05:09.32 They make a good showing in the flesh, it gives you 00:05:09.36\00:05:11.97 a sense of reputation. 00:05:12.01\00:05:13.91 There was something about it that it wasn't for the 00:05:13.94\00:05:16.55 believers themselves, but something they were trying 00:05:16.59\00:05:19.16 to do for themselves. 00:05:19.19\00:05:20.39 That is totally contrary to the spirit of Christ 00:05:20.43\00:05:23.40 because we learn in Philippians that Jesus made Himself 00:05:23.44\00:05:26.67 of no reputation, when He came to this earth Jesus 00:05:26.70\00:05:30.25 didn't come to be born into a palaces. 00:05:30.29\00:05:32.62 He was willing at every stage to be considered 00:05:32.65\00:05:37.15 something different than He was, falsely represented. 00:05:37.19\00:05:40.32 All sorts of things, and that was because reputation 00:05:40.35\00:05:43.45 was not what was most important to Jesus, 00:05:43.49\00:05:45.74 it was character, it was saving souls, 00:05:45.78\00:05:48.00 reaching out to people. 00:05:48.03\00:05:49.29 These Judaizers didn't really have, the apostle Paul was 00:05:49.33\00:05:54.24 telling them, look these guys do not have your best 00:05:54.28\00:05:56.84 interest in mind, they are just doing this for themselves. 00:05:56.88\00:05:59.65 You know Jim, you use at work Judaizers and just for the 00:05:59.68\00:06:03.13 benefit of our viewers, a Judaizers means that they are 00:06:03.17\00:06:06.59 trying to bring people into the Jewish faith. 00:06:06.62\00:06:09.24 Now it is true that the apostle Paul would have 00:06:09.28\00:06:11.83 considered himself a faithful Jew because he had really 00:06:11.86\00:06:15.07 adhere to the Jews but the Jewish religion of his day 00:06:15.10\00:06:18.23 the religion itself was a substitute for following Christ. 00:06:18.27\00:06:24.75 What was interesting was in order to avoid the persecution 00:06:24.78\00:06:29.61 what they were really trying to do was retain their old 00:06:29.64\00:06:33.73 unspiritual life and then they were trying to bring others 00:06:33.76\00:06:37.81 into that old unspiritual life. 00:06:37.84\00:06:39.87 So they wouldn't suffer persecution. 00:06:39.91\00:06:41.96 They had formed their own religion and it is interesting 00:06:42.00\00:06:47.79 how sometimes people will get on some hobbyhorse, their 00:06:47.83\00:06:53.26 own pet idea and they like the feeling they get when they 00:06:53.30\00:06:58.70 can get other people on that pet idea. 00:06:58.73\00:07:01.38 It makes them this guru over the masses, we are all in 00:07:01.42\00:07:05.65 this club and it gives them a clubhouse mentality. 00:07:05.69\00:07:09.06 It seems that that was what was going on here. 00:07:09.09\00:07:12.43 - You're right, you're exactly right. 00:07:12.46\00:07:14.09 There is another passage in Galatians where the 00:07:14.12\00:07:15.56 apostle Paul's specifically talks about the motivation 00:07:15.60\00:07:20.17 behind these false teachers. 00:07:20.21\00:07:21.87 In Galatians 4:17 he says, "they zealously court you, 00:07:21.91\00:07:26.30 "but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you 00:07:26.33\00:07:30.69 "maybe zealous for them. " 00:07:30.72\00:07:32.56 So what they were doing was trying to find followers. 00:07:32.60\00:07:35.48 You know a lot of times the reason people try to find 00:07:35.51\00:07:38.69 someone to follow them is because if they are not in a 00:07:38.72\00:07:41.61 right position and they want to justify themselves, 00:07:41.65\00:07:44.53 if they can get a whole bunch of other people to agree 00:07:44.57\00:07:47.15 with them that it helps to validate where they are. 00:07:47.18\00:07:49.69 It also gives them a greater sense of power and influence 00:07:49.73\00:07:52.92 and there is all sorts of false motivations that can come 00:07:52.96\00:07:55.98 when we are trying to gain followers after ourselves. 00:07:56.01\00:07:58.86 Well let me interject this, I want you to hold the thought 00:07:58.90\00:08:01.71 but this may be confusing to the readers. 00:08:01.75\00:08:04.34 It says they would zealously exclude you, so what you 00:08:04.37\00:08:08.22 have been talking about is including them. 00:08:08.26\00:08:10.56 The point he is making is that they were trying to bring 00:08:10.59\00:08:14.73 them in but the idea of excluding, some translations 00:08:14.76\00:08:18.83 will say including because it is like, well they don't 00:08:18.86\00:08:22.22 seem to be trying to exclude but the point that is being 00:08:22.25\00:08:25.58 made here is again back to the clubhouse mentality. 00:08:25.61\00:08:29.61 It is like you have to do this and this to be part of 00:08:29.65\00:08:34.71 this club, and so what they do is they exclude people 00:08:34.75\00:08:38.28 who, if you're not going to be circumcised you can't 00:08:38.32\00:08:41.82 be part of our club. 00:08:41.85\00:08:42.90 By excluding certain people it vaunts them up, but then 00:08:42.94\00:08:48.75 they exclude, his wording is they zealously court you 00:08:48.78\00:08:54.56 and then they want to exclude you that 00:08:54.60\00:08:56.66 you maybe zealous for them. 00:08:56.69\00:08:58.27 It's a strange phenomenon that is part of human nature, 00:08:58.31\00:09:02.53 when we are excluded from something, the carnal nature 00:09:02.56\00:09:06.74 seems to want to do it all more. 00:09:06.78\00:09:08.75 If I can't have it, what I can't have it? 00:09:08.79\00:09:10.36 I want to be a part of that, I want to be part of this 00:09:10.40\00:09:13.16 elite group and that is what he is commenting on here 00:09:13.20\00:09:16.65 about excluding them, but false teachers are excluding 00:09:16.69\00:09:20.49 ultimately because they want these Galatians to be 00:09:20.52\00:09:24.29 desired to be enamored with their ways 00:09:24.33\00:09:28.25 of thinking and their religion. 00:09:28.28\00:09:30.30 The other thing that strikes me here is that they 00:09:30.33\00:09:34.06 zealously court you, so you have this picture of 00:09:34.10\00:09:37.76 courtship where even though they are excluding, they 00:09:37.80\00:09:41.73 also when you have false teachers involved, there is 00:09:41.77\00:09:45.66 usually some flattering going on. 00:09:45.70\00:09:47.39 You know when you're courting somebody there is a sense 00:09:47.42\00:09:50.92 in which you are wanting them, I can see you having 00:09:50.95\00:09:54.41 some great potential with us. 00:09:54.45\00:09:55.94 So they court and give them a sense that they could 00:09:55.98\00:09:58.63 really be special if they were circumcised. 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.76 They are trying to allure them into this, but it is not 00:10:00.80\00:10:04.52 for the benefit of these believers, 00:10:04.56\00:10:06.99 it is for their own benefit. 00:10:07.03\00:10:08.52 Now one thing the apostle Paul says that is kind of 00:10:08.55\00:10:11.37 interesting here though is right after verse 17 it says, 00:10:11.41\00:10:15.15 "but it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, 00:10:15.19\00:10:18.90 "and not only when I'm present with you. " 00:10:18.94\00:10:20.38 He said it's good to be zealous, so even though 00:10:20.41\00:10:22.97 they were zealous in a wrong way, the apostle Paul wants 00:10:23.00\00:10:25.76 to make the point that it is a good thing to be zealous. 00:10:25.79\00:10:28.35 One of the biggest problems that we have in the Christian 00:10:28.38\00:10:30.91 Church is complacency, laziness. 00:10:30.94\00:10:33.92 We seem to forget the devil is one of the hardest 00:10:33.96\00:10:37.21 workers out there, and he is zealously doing his work. 00:10:37.25\00:10:40.43 He has got his representatives who are zealously doing 00:10:40.46\00:10:43.61 their work and he doesn't sit back. 00:10:43.65\00:10:45.81 - incidentally Paul was one of those representatives. 00:10:45.85\00:10:47.31 - that's right, he was. 00:10:47.34\00:10:48.71 So when we sit back and just ignore that and say oh well, 00:10:48.75\00:10:52.84 the Lord will take care of it all. 00:10:52.88\00:10:54.79 If we ignore the obvious problems that are existing, 00:10:54.82\00:11:00.25 ignore our own need to be spreading the gospel as we 00:11:00.28\00:11:04.30 talked about last time, restoring those who are in need 00:11:04.34\00:11:07.89 of help in winning those who are in need of being won, then the 00:11:07.93\00:11:11.47 Devil is going to, because of his zealousness, he is 00:11:11.51\00:11:14.58 going to gain battles, he will not win the ultimate war 00:11:14.61\00:11:17.19 but he is going to gain battles that we could have won 00:11:17.22\00:11:19.76 if we hadn't been sleeping on the job. 00:11:19.80\00:11:21.29 That is exactly right, so the apostle Paul is 00:11:21.33\00:11:23.92 I was mentioning head that zeal, Jesus Himself 00:11:23.95\00:11:26.47 The Bible said in the story of the cleansing of the 00:11:26.51\00:11:29.89 temple and John chapter 2, that it applies the text 00:11:29.93\00:11:33.04 from the Old Testament Word says David had written 00:11:33.08\00:11:36.16 zeal, for thy house is eating me up. 00:11:36.19\00:11:38.20 In other words Jesus was zealous for the cause of God. 00:11:38.24\00:11:41.21 The problem is that these people were zealous for 00:11:41.24\00:11:44.24 the wrong thing for sure. 00:11:44.27\00:11:45.30 So we are going to go into verse 12 and continue on. 00:11:45.34\00:11:51.28 Well, you had gone into verse 12 about the circumcision. 00:11:51.31\00:11:56.21 Notice the language here, "these will compel you to be 00:11:56.25\00:12:00.34 "circumcised, only that they may not suffer persecution 00:12:00.38\00:12:04.44 "for the cross of Christ. " 00:12:04.47\00:12:05.92 So this is interesting, they are wanting to compel this 00:12:05.96\00:12:10.26 circumcision for the purpose of not suffering persecution 00:12:10.29\00:12:15.11 and this is fascinating to me just looking at this from 00:12:15.14\00:12:19.92 the perspective of Christianity today. 00:12:19.96\00:12:21.99 The tendency today of many Christians is to not want to 00:12:22.03\00:12:29.07 be that different from the world around us. 00:12:29.11\00:12:31.19 And we come up with reasons, we say well we wouldn't 00:12:31.22\00:12:35.12 reach as many people if we were so different. 00:12:35.15\00:12:37.77 But I'm afraid that the real reason is we really 00:12:37.81\00:12:40.39 don't want to suffer that persecution. 00:12:40.42\00:12:42.95 You know the Bible tells us in 2 Timothy 3:12 if you 00:12:42.98\00:12:47.43 want to turn there, 2 Timothy 3:12 00:12:47.47\00:12:51.48 The apostle Paul tells this young apprentice, "yes, 00:12:51.51\00:12:57.02 "and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus 00:12:57.05\00:13:02.53 "will suffer persecution. " 00:13:02.56\00:13:05.33 You suffer persecution when you live godly. 00:13:05.37\00:13:07.71 One of the challenges with these Judaizing teachers 00:13:07.75\00:13:10.90 was they really didn't want to live godly. 00:13:10.94\00:13:13.13 They wanted a religion where they had a few outward 00:13:13.17\00:13:16.80 things they could subscribe to that would help them 00:13:16.84\00:13:20.44 to be able to avoid totally living godly. 00:13:20.48\00:13:24.41 I'm looking at our clock and saying I want to really 00:13:24.44\00:13:29.98 dig into this, but we need to take a break. 00:13:30.02\00:13:32.26 So we are great go ahead and do that and when we 00:13:32.29\00:13:34.79 come back we are really going to dig into this idea 00:13:34.82\00:13:38.35 of avoiding this persecution for the cross of Christ. 00:13:38.39\00:13:41.84 How we as Christians need to be faithful to Christ 00:13:41.88\00:13:45.30 no matter what, stay tuned! 00:13:45.33\00:13:48.45
