Welcome back, before the break we were talking about 00:00:05.70\00:00:09.24 Galatians 6 and the apostle Paul's ammunition to bear 00:00:09.27\00:00:12.77 one another's burdens. 00:00:12.80\00:00:14.51 He talks about hearing one another's burdens and 00:00:14.55\00:00:16.66 fulfilling the law of Christ. 00:00:16.70\00:00:18.37 What we have been discussing Mark, is that we can't fulfill 00:00:18.40\00:00:22.59 the law of Christ and be indifferent to the needs of our 00:00:22.63\00:00:26.78 fellow brothers at the same time. 00:00:26.81\00:00:28.73 If we are going to be like Christ we can't have that 00:00:28.77\00:00:31.40 indifference, we have to a have compassion 00:00:31.43\00:00:33.91 for those who are in need. 00:00:33.94\00:00:35.23 - That's right person is converted, Paul says Christ 00:00:35.26\00:00:37.30 lives in me and we know how Christ lives. 00:00:37.33\00:00:40.26 Christ does not live with that indifference towards 00:00:40.30\00:00:42.83 people, so if we had that indifference that should tell 00:00:42.86\00:00:45.36 us we need a deeper experience. 00:00:45.39\00:00:47.16 Well Jim we are going to jump into chapter 6:3 and 00:00:47.19\00:00:51.64 it says here in Galatians 6:3, "for if anyone thinks 00:00:51.68\00:00:56.06 "himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives 00:00:56.09\00:01:00.40 "himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then 00:01:00.44\00:01:04.72 "he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in 00:01:04.75\00:01:07.64 "another. 5. For each one shall bear his own load. " 00:01:07.68\00:01:10.57 Now it is interesting, he is going to make this point 00:01:10.61\00:01:13.60 again more fully by talking about repeat and sowing. 00:01:13.63\00:01:16.58 In essence he is saying, we need to be careful, it's a 00:01:16.61\00:01:19.49 what do I want to say, it's a characteristic of the fallen 00:01:19.53\00:01:24.20 human condition to compare ourselves with one another. 00:01:24.23\00:01:29.51 In fact 2 Corinthians 10 it has a piece of counsel we are 00:01:29.55\00:01:34.79 going to look at, 2 Corinthians 10:12. 00:01:34.83\00:01:39.58 Look at what the apostle Paul says here, "for we dare not 00:01:39.62\00:01:45.99 "class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who 00:01:46.02\00:01:49.59 "commended themselves, but they measuring themselves by 00:01:49.62\00:01:53.19 "themselves and comparing themselves among themselves 00:01:53.22\00:01:57.30 "are not wise. " Notice they commend themselves, why? 00:01:57.34\00:02:00.71 When you compare yourself you can always find somebody 00:02:00.75\00:02:04.09 that you appear to be better than. 00:02:04.13\00:02:06.40 The fact of the matter is our standard is Christ. 00:02:06.44\00:02:09.06 If we always look to Christ it produces a total different 00:02:09.10\00:02:13.79 realization of who we are. 00:02:13.82\00:02:16.58 That is exactly right and comparing ourselves to Christ is 00:02:16.61\00:02:18.77 exactly where I believe he is going. 00:02:18.80\00:02:20.72 In verse 4 because he says, "let each one," I am back in 00:02:20.75\00:02:25.56 Galatians 6:4, "but let each one examine his own work. " 00:02:25.60\00:02:29.85 You know in 2 Corinthians 13:5 he also talks about how 00:02:29.88\00:02:33.63 we should examine ourselves whether we be in the faith. 00:02:33.67\00:02:36.76 Well certainly we don't want to spend all of our time 00:02:36.80\00:02:39.86 looking at ourselves, looking at our own faults. 00:02:39.90\00:02:42.70 If we spend all of our time doing that we will become 00:02:42.73\00:02:45.71 discouraged and we will forget that Christ is there to 00:02:45.74\00:02:48.69 help us in our time of need. 00:02:48.72\00:02:50.08 However, to ignore ourselves and what is going on in 00:02:50.12\00:02:54.62 terms of our own life and how it compares to the life 00:02:54.66\00:02:59.12 of Christ, it's definitely not what the apostle 00:02:59.16\00:03:01.70 Paul would have us to do. 00:03:01.73\00:03:03.12 The idea here is to focus on Christ. 00:03:03.15\00:03:05.82 As we come close to Christ, His goodness, pierces our soul 00:03:05.86\00:03:10.88 and we are able then to evaluate our life in light of the 00:03:10.91\00:03:15.89 example of Christ. 00:03:15.93\00:03:17.86 One of my favorite statements is from a book called 00:03:17.89\00:03:21.63 'Steps To Christ' where it says that the closer we come 00:03:21.66\00:03:25.68 to Christ, the more unworthy we appear in our own eyes. 00:03:25.71\00:03:29.72 So if we come close to Christ, then we will be able to see 00:03:29.76\00:03:33.55 our own need and we won't think ourselves to be something. 00:03:33.59\00:03:37.35 We won't be lifting ourselves up above others, we are 00:03:37.38\00:03:40.35 going to be able to see ourselves the way we truly are. 00:03:40.39\00:03:42.91 What truly is interesting about that statement, and I am 00:03:42.95\00:03:44.96 familiar with the one you are bringing up in the book 00:03:45.00\00:03:48.37 'Steps To Christ' it goes on to say that the closer we 00:03:48.40\00:03:51.15 come to Christ the more faulty we appear in our own eyes 00:03:51.18\00:03:56.04 and this is evidence of the vivifying power, life-giving 00:03:56.07\00:04:00.89 power of the Holy Spirit has come upon us. 00:04:00.93\00:04:02.83 We couldn't see our true condition if it weren't for the 00:04:02.86\00:04:07.33 Holy Spirit, so one minister that I know made this point. 00:04:07.36\00:04:11.82 When we begin to see our sinful- ness we should take courage 00:04:11.85\00:04:15.76 that we have enough of the Holy Spirit to be able to see 00:04:15.80\00:04:19.20 that amount of sinfulness and that must be evidence to us 00:04:19.24\00:04:22.28 that the Spirit is willing and ready to do a work in our 00:04:22.32\00:04:25.32 hearts that we can't do for ourselves. 00:04:25.36\00:04:27.04 That's right, when we begin to sense the Holy Spirit 00:04:27.08\00:04:29.81 pointing out those areas of need, that is nothing less 00:04:29.85\00:04:32.61 then the voice of Jesus Christ Himself speaking to our 00:04:32.64\00:04:35.37 souls, that is a powerful thought. 00:04:35.40\00:04:37.51 The reality is that when I feel comfortable and feel 00:04:37.54\00:04:42.44 good about how things are going in my life, 00:04:42.48\00:04:43.87 sometimes that is the most dangerous position to be in. 00:04:43.91\00:04:47.36 It is one I feel uncomfortable, when I know that I am not 00:04:47.40\00:04:51.18 exactly where I need to be that the Lord Jesus is far more 00:04:51.21\00:04:54.96 beautiful and gracious, and far more principled than 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.89 compassionate, all the things that He is when I am 00:04:57.93\00:05:00.79 looking at Him, I am drawn out after Him. 00:05:00.82\00:05:03.16 I'm at a certain level of uncomfortableness and 00:05:03.19\00:05:06.48 yet I know the voice of Jesus is the One in my heart 00:05:06.52\00:05:09.66 making me sense that. 00:05:09.70\00:05:11.38 So it gives me communion with Him. 00:05:11.41\00:05:12.71 That's right, a Christian life is a life of growth. 00:05:12.75\00:05:16.96 A parent would be very alarmed if they had a child that 00:05:16.99\00:05:21.17 was born and at one year of age stopped growing. 00:05:21.20\00:05:24.51 Here six months later and he is a year and a half and he 00:05:24.55\00:05:26.96 hasn't grown from a time he was a year old and then he is 00:05:26.99\00:05:29.20 two years old and hasn't grown at all the parent would 00:05:29.23\00:05:31.22 have been to every doctor in town and everything else. 00:05:31.26\00:05:34.10 Too often as Christians we are satisfied when we are in 00:05:34.13\00:05:36.93 the same place we have been for 5, 10, 20 years. 00:05:36.97\00:05:40.13 - right! - so the Lord is wanting us to do is see our 00:05:40.16\00:05:44.33 weaknesses and examine our own work, not that we would go 00:05:44.37\00:05:47.99 around discouraged but to prompt us to continue to reach 00:05:48.02\00:05:51.61 out after Him so we can continue to 00:05:51.64\00:05:53.72 grow into Christ likeness. 00:05:53.76\00:05:55.27 And we will be unable to relate to others in the right way 00:05:55.30\00:05:58.22 because rather than holding ourselves above them we will 00:05:58.26\00:06:01.14 be empathize with them because we truly are 00:06:01.18\00:06:03.10 no better then than they. 00:06:03.14\00:06:04.39 Right, you know the other thing is that this is not just 00:06:04.42\00:06:08.29 good advice, this is essential for us. 00:06:08.32\00:06:10.58 This is what Paul makes a point of in verse 5 when he 00:06:10.62\00:06:12.43 says, "for each one shall bear his own load. " 00:06:12.47\00:06:14.50 In essence what he is saying is, there is an 00:06:14.54\00:06:16.50 accountability factor here and ultimately as we bear 00:06:16.54\00:06:19.73 one another's burdens we seek to help others. 00:06:19.76\00:06:21.72 We can't make, you can't give a Christian experience 00:06:21.75\00:06:25.76 to somebody else as much as you can seek to bear their 00:06:25.80\00:06:29.78 burdens, but we have to answer for own choices. 00:06:29.81\00:06:32.58 We have to answer our own decisions and our own 00:06:32.61\00:06:35.35 experience, or lack there of. 00:06:35.38\00:06:37.19 So he says each one in essence, is going to bear his own load. 00:06:37.23\00:06:41.00 As he says that, he leads into a very challenging few 00:06:41.03\00:06:44.77 verses where he tries to describe for them the 00:06:44.81\00:06:47.19 difficulties they are going to have if they accept this gospel 00:06:47.23\00:06:50.87 of circumcision, or the works of the law that is being 00:06:50.91\00:06:53.67 presented to them by these Judaizers Christians. 00:06:53.71\00:06:56.44 If you look in verse 6, we will pick up there and just 00:06:56.48\00:06:59.71 read a few more verses. 00:06:59.74\00:07:01.17 It says, "let him who is taught the word share in all 00:07:01.21\00:07:04.55 "good things with him who teaches. " 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.45 The idea here is the apostle Paul, he himself is helping 00:07:06.48\00:07:10.19 to bear the burdens of these Galatians, seeking to reach 00:07:10.23\00:07:13.57 those who have fallen themselves which is this church. 00:07:13.60\00:07:17.10 Many of these Gentile believers have begun to go the way 00:07:17.14\00:07:20.61 of these Judaizers teachers. 00:07:20.64\00:07:22.28 He is saying that I am trying to bear your burdens and 00:07:22.32\00:07:25.13 share in the same and have a burden for others. 00:07:25.17\00:07:27.43 We need to be bearing each other's burdens. 00:07:27.47\00:07:30.25 Then he says in verse 7, "Do not be deceived," 00:07:30.29\00:07:33.00 that's important! "God is not mocked; for whatever a man 00:07:33.04\00:07:36.63 "sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his 00:07:36.67\00:07:39.98 "flash will also flesh reap corruption, but he who sows 00:07:40.01\00:07:43.58 "to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. " 00:07:43.62\00:07:47.15 The idea here is that the apostle Paul is saying, 00:07:47.18\00:07:49.83 you know this gospel of circumcision, works of the law, 00:07:49.87\00:07:54.51 it leaves you in the flesh. 00:07:54.54\00:07:56.85 When you don't believe in justification by faith in 00:07:56.88\00:07:59.86 Christ, you don't see the need for that union with Christ 00:07:59.89\00:08:02.85 you don't receive the Spirit and all that is left is the flesh. 00:08:02.89\00:08:06.02 If you sow to your flesh you will reap corruption. 00:08:06.05\00:08:09.36 This is a very clear warning that he is giving. 00:08:09.40\00:08:12.64 You know I want to add to that something that is very 00:08:12.67\00:08:15.40 important here, he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh 00:08:15.43\00:08:19.34 reap corruption, this is not an arbitrary decree 00:08:19.37\00:08:22.02 from a God who is angry because you chose something 00:08:22.06\00:08:24.67 different than what He asked you to do. 00:08:24.71\00:08:26.18 God is trying to communicate to us that the flesh brings 00:08:26.21\00:08:29.05 corruption, sin has its own penalty built-into it. 00:08:29.09\00:08:32.43 God is not trying to keep us from the fun things in life. 00:08:32.46\00:08:35.15 God is trying to shield us from things that would destroy 00:08:35.19\00:08:37.62 us. - that's right you are going to reap what you sow. 00:08:37.66\00:08:40.49 That's why he says don't be deceived, these people are 00:08:40.53\00:08:43.33 trying to deceive him. 00:08:43.36\00:08:44.33 There is a couple other passages within Scripture that use 00:08:44.34\00:08:46.94 those words, do not be deceived. 00:08:46.97\00:08:49.14 One of them is when John writes in 1 John 3:8, not to be 00:08:49.17\00:08:52.83 deceived, he who practices righteousness, 00:08:52.86\00:08:55.47 he says, it is righteous. 00:08:55.50\00:08:57.48 No one can claim righteousness by circumcision and yet 00:08:57.51\00:09:00.20 be practicing the works of the flesh. 00:09:00.23\00:09:01.98 He says if they do, they are not righteous. 00:09:02.02\00:09:04.71 He who practices righteousness is righteous. 00:09:04.75\00:09:07.41 Don't be deceived by that. 00:09:07.45\00:09:09.32 And in another place James says, don't be just hearers 00:09:09.36\00:09:12.86 of the law, but doers, or hearers of the words but doers. 00:09:12.89\00:09:16.74 Then he says if you are just hearers of law you would be 00:09:16.78\00:09:20.49 deceiving yourself, so the ideas don't be deceived by the 00:09:20.52\00:09:24.50 idea that you can just hear the law, claim righteousness 00:09:24.54\00:09:28.29 through circumcision or anything else, and yet be living 00:09:28.33\00:09:32.05 a life that is not a righteous life. 00:09:32.09\00:09:34.12 If you sow to the flesh you are going to reap corruption. 00:09:34.15\00:09:37.75 You are going to reap what you sow, 00:09:37.78\00:09:39.79 it very clearly says that. 00:09:39.83\00:09:41.05 But right after this he says, if you sow to the Spirit, 00:09:41.08\00:09:44.81 you're going to reap everlasting life. 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.30 Then he encourages them in verse 9, "and let's not grow 00:09:47.34\00:09:51.10 "weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap 00:09:51.14\00:09:54.87 "if we do not lose heart. " 00:09:54.90\00:09:56.30 Here he is helping these Galatians to understand what 00:09:56.33\00:09:59.49 they have done is that they got weary in doing good. 00:09:59.52\00:10:03.76 Back in Chapter 5:7 he said, "you ran well, who hindered 00:10:03.79\00:10:08.00 "you from obeying the truth?" 00:10:08.03\00:10:09.50 That is exactly what he is saying here, let's not grow 00:10:09.54\00:10:12.20 weary in doing good, we are on the right track. 00:10:12.23\00:10:15.18 Don't grow weary and go the easy route with these 00:10:15.22\00:10:18.10 false deceptions and the idea is don't, if you stay with 00:10:18.13\00:10:23.66 the Lord Jesus you will reap everlasting life. 00:10:23.70\00:10:26.68 There is a verse that I would like to look at on this 00:10:26.72\00:10:29.33 point in Hebrews 10 that is really powerfully illustrating 00:10:29.36\00:10:33.06 this, it's in verse 23. 00:10:33.09\00:10:34.82 He says, Hebrews 10:23, "let us hold fast the confession 00:10:34.86\00:10:40.42 "of our hope without wavering for He who promised is 00:10:40.46\00:10:44.44 "faithful. " That is the same thing he is saying in 00:10:44.48\00:10:48.24 Galatians, we will reap if we don't lose heart. 00:10:48.28\00:10:51.97 He who promised is faithful, if we keep with the Lord Jesus 00:10:52.01\00:10:56.50 and if we don't give up because of the flesh's 00:10:56.53\00:11:00.40 temptations we can be sure that we are going to be 00:11:00.43\00:11:04.26 reaping everlasting life. 00:11:04.30\00:11:05.87 You know Jim, it is interesting because the next verse 00:11:05.90\00:11:08.22 there in Hebrews says, "let us consider one another 00:11:08.25\00:11:10.53 "in order to stir up love and good works. " 00:11:10.56\00:11:12.86 The idea again is bearing one another's burdens and that 00:11:12.90\00:11:16.62 takes us to the verse 10 in Galatians 6:10 where he says, 00:11:16.65\00:11:20.91 "therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to 00:11:20.94\00:11:25.12 "all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. " 00:11:25.16\00:11:30.05 One thing that there is heavy on my heart is how 00:11:30.08\00:11:33.63 Christians can be the meanest to Christians. 00:11:33.67\00:11:37.15 We like to pick on each other, I hear all the time 00:11:37.18\00:11:40.90 Christians getting on all the bad Christians verses 00:11:40.94\00:11:44.62 giving them the benefit of the doubt. 00:11:44.65\00:11:47.27 In seeking to guard one another's reputations, 00:11:47.31\00:11:50.06 you can see a person on the street and witness to them. 00:11:50.09\00:11:53.68 We are going to share with them, we are going to talk 00:11:53.71\00:11:57.26 to them about Jesus. 00:11:57.30\00:11:58.60 We see somebody in church and we hold a grudge with them 00:11:58.63\00:12:01.01 for 30 years, where does this come from? 00:12:01.05\00:12:03.71 Certainly not from the Spirit, it comes from a flesh. 00:12:03.75\00:12:07.11 The apostle urges us here to do good to all especially 00:12:07.15\00:12:10.48 those of the household of faith. 00:12:10.51\00:12:11.74 Even Jesus said, that in our worship if you come to the 00:12:11.77\00:12:14.51 altar and there remember you have, someone has something 00:12:14.55\00:12:17.26 against you go and make that right. 00:12:17.29\00:12:20.80 Have a burden for reconciliation with one another. 00:12:20.84\00:12:23.83 Jesus said people will know you are My disciples by the 00:12:23.87\00:12:27.93 love you have for one another. 00:12:27.97\00:12:29.50 So let us seek to bear one another's burdens, to restore 00:12:29.54\00:12:32.75 others in the spirit of gentleness, to love others as 00:12:32.79\00:12:35.97 Christ loved us. 00:12:36.00\00:12:38.13
