Welcome back to another episode of Books of the Book. 00:00:23.06\00:00:25.04 I'm Pastor Mark Howard and director of the Emmanuel 00:00:25.08\00:00:27.32 Institute of evangelism in the Michigan conferences 00:00:27.36\00:00:29.09 Seventh-day Adventist as well as the Pastor of the 00:00:29.12\00:00:30.79 Gobels Seventh-day Adventist church in Gobels Michigan. 00:00:30.82\00:00:32.83 I'm here at my co-host, my younger brother Jim. 00:00:32.87\00:00:35.65 Yes, my name is Jim Howard and I too am a Pastor 00:00:35.69\00:00:38.43 in the Michigan conference. 00:00:38.47\00:00:39.54 I pastor the Detroit Metropolitan and South Lyons 00:00:39.57\00:00:42.44 Seventh-day Adventist churches. 00:00:42.48\00:00:43.87 We have been going through the book of Galatians and you know 00:00:43.91\00:00:47.55 Jim it has been a pleasure, working with my kid brother 00:00:47.59\00:00:50.18 on the Galatians book as we been going through and studying. 00:00:50.22\00:00:54.82 We had some really great discussions on so many powerful 00:00:54.85\00:00:59.42 truths in the book of Galatians. 00:00:59.46\00:01:01.33 - yes we have. 00:01:01.37\00:01:02.34 Today is going to be no different, we're studying in the 00:01:02.35\00:01:04.01 book of Galatians and will be in Chapter 5. 00:01:04.05\00:01:06.00 If you're watching at home you will need to have a Bible 00:01:06.03\00:01:08.62 nearby I would encourage you to pick it up and follow 00:01:08.66\00:01:11.21 along with us. 00:01:11.24\00:01:12.39 We are going to Galatians 5 and you will find it in the 00:01:12.42\00:01:14.77 New Testament starting with Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, 00:01:14.80\00:01:18.01 Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:18.05\00:01:21.22 We're going to Galatians 5:13. 00:01:21.26\00:01:26.17 This is something we haven't commented a lot on. 00:01:26.21\00:01:29.40 We are going to pick up on here were the apostle Paul 00:01:29.44\00:01:33.58 writes in Galatians 5:13, "for you, brother, have been 00:01:33.61\00:01:37.72 "called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an 00:01:37.75\00:01:42.06 "opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one 00:01:42.10\00:01:45.78 "another. 14. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, 00:01:45.82\00:01:49.56 "even in this: 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself'. 00:01:49.59\00:01:53.36 "But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you 00:01:53.40\00:01:57.13 "be consumed by one another!" 00:01:57.17\00:01:59.14 Now the point that Paul is trying to make is this. 00:01:59.17\00:02:04.26 The Judaizing teachers have come in and pushed a false 00:02:04.30\00:02:08.78 gospel upon the Galatians, the gospel of circumcision. 00:02:08.81\00:02:13.63 And so as we have discussed this Jim, the Galatians 00:02:13.66\00:02:18.20 have accepted this false gospel and Paul is trying to 00:02:18.23\00:02:21.46 point out is that there is a disconnect with their 00:02:21.50\00:02:24.70 behavior and their faith. 00:02:24.73\00:02:26.95 There is always going to be a corresponding action 00:02:26.99\00:02:32.29 to your belief system. 00:02:32.32\00:02:34.38 There is going to be a corresponding lifestyle and Paul 00:02:34.42\00:02:37.31 is trying to help them to see that their lifestyle is 00:02:37.35\00:02:40.52 not Christian and that should clue them in to the fact 00:02:40.55\00:02:43.69 that something is wrong in this situation. 00:02:43.72\00:02:46.56 Now one of the things he brings up here Jim, in this 00:02:46.59\00:02:49.21 passage is, we need to touch on this, this idea that 00:02:49.25\00:02:52.28 so many people miss the point when Paul is saying, 00:02:52.32\00:02:55.32 all the law is fulfilling one word, even this 00:02:55.36\00:02:57.86 you should love your neighbor as yourself. 00:02:57.89\00:03:01.95 They take that as Paul saying that really the 00:03:01.98\00:03:05.18 Ten Commandments don't exist anymore as long as 00:03:05.22\00:03:08.38 we love each other. 00:03:08.42\00:03:09.68 I think you were going to comment on that. 00:03:09.71\00:03:12.59 Yes, there is a verse in Romans 13 that is a parallel 00:03:12.62\00:03:15.46 verse to this and I wonder if we could turn there 00:03:15.49\00:03:18.29 together, Romans 13:8. 00:03:18.33\00:03:23.17 The apostle Paul here writing also and is expounding 00:03:23.21\00:03:27.46 in a different way to the Romans. 00:03:27.50\00:03:29.47 He says, "owe no one anything except to love one another, 00:03:29.50\00:03:33.65 "for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the 00:03:33.69\00:03:37.27 "Commandments, you shall not commit adultery, you shall 00:03:37.30\00:03:40.42 "not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false 00:03:40.46\00:03:43.34 "witness, you shall not covet, and if there is any other 00:03:43.38\00:03:46.59 "Commandment, are all summed up in this saying namely, 00:03:46.63\00:03:49.80 "you shall love your neighbor as yourself. 00:03:49.84\00:03:52.53 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the 00:03:52.57\00:03:56.66 "fulfillment of the law. " 00:03:56.70\00:03:58.64 So here he uses a word here that I think is very important. 00:03:58.67\00:04:02.75 He says, they are all summed up in this saying, you shall 00:04:02.79\00:04:06.83 love your neighbor as yourself. 00:04:06.87\00:04:08.14 Basically what he is saying is look, if you love your 00:04:08.18\00:04:11.19 neighbor, you are not going to sin against them. 00:04:11.22\00:04:14.09 You're not going to get into an adulterous relationship. 00:04:14.13\00:04:16.95 You are not going to lie to them, you're not going to 00:04:16.99\00:04:19.99 harm them and so the idea of loving your neighbor 00:04:20.02\00:04:23.69 you would naturally be keeping those commandments if 00:04:23.73\00:04:27.36 you were loving your neighbor. 00:04:27.40\00:04:28.37 The idea here is not that love replaces the law, but that 00:04:28.39\00:04:32.31 the love sums up the law. 00:04:32.34\00:04:34.21 There is a very clear distinction. 00:04:34.25\00:04:36.22 The other thing that is worth noting here is that he says, 00:04:36.25\00:04:39.55 you shall love your neighbor as yourself and that is 00:04:39.59\00:04:42.82 actually found in the Old Testament in Leviticus 19. 00:04:42.86\00:04:46.66 So to say that you shall love your neighbor as yourself 00:04:46.70\00:04:50.54 replaces the Ten Commandments would be kind of silly. 00:04:50.57\00:04:54.62 Back in the Old Testament they had this same command, 00:04:54.65\00:04:58.26 love your neighbor as yourself in Leviticus 19:18 and 00:04:58.30\00:05:01.65 yet that did not do away with the Ten Commandments back 00:05:01.69\00:05:05.00 then so why would it do away with it now? 00:05:05.04\00:05:07.03 So the apostle Paul is simply making the point in 00:05:07.07\00:05:09.23 Galatians that love will sum up the law and those who love 00:05:09.26\00:05:13.35 will fulfill the law. 00:05:13.39\00:05:15.20 That's right, we have already seen that Paul is positive about 00:05:15.23\00:05:18.12 the Ten Commandments, it's just the misuse 00:05:18.16\00:05:20.35 of the Ten Commandments that he is concerned with. 00:05:20.39\00:05:22.62 The same thing in the teachings of Jesus which made me 00:05:22.66\00:05:24.86 think of that when you said that. 00:05:24.90\00:05:26.51 Matthew 22:35 the Bible says, then one of them, a lawyer" 00:05:26.54\00:05:31.94 one who specialized in this case religious law. 00:05:31.98\00:05:35.81 "He asked him a question testing him and saying Teacher, 00:05:35.85\00:05:39.44 "which is the great Commandment in the law? Jesus said to 00:05:39.48\00:05:43.03 "him, you shall love the Lord your God with all your 00:05:43.07\00:05:46.27 "heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 00:05:46.30\00:05:49.47 "This is the first and great Commandment. " 00:05:49.50\00:05:51.60 Now if we wanted to be a realistic with what Paul just 00:05:51.64\00:05:54.62 said, we could say that Paul really took away even one 00:05:54.66\00:05:57.61 of these commandments of Jesus. 00:05:57.64\00:05:58.91 He didn't bring that one up, he only brought the next one 00:05:58.94\00:06:01.71 where Jesus says, "and the second is like it: you shall 00:06:01.75\00:06:04.48 "love your neighbor as yourself. " 00:06:04.51\00:06:05.76 Now the point is Paul was trying to focus on an aspect, 00:06:05.79\00:06:09.17 let's read verse 40 where Jesus says, "on these two 00:06:09.21\00:06:12.22 Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. " 00:06:12.26\00:06:15.20 All he is trying to say is this purity like the law is 00:06:15.24\00:06:17.93 summed up in these two principles, but first one love 00:06:17.97\00:06:20.20 God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength. 00:06:20.24\00:06:22.67 That sums up the first four commandments dealing 00:06:22.71\00:06:25.11 with our love to God. 00:06:25.14\00:06:26.69 Our service to God that kind of thing. 00:06:26.72\00:06:29.43 The last six commandments of the 10 are summed up in 00:06:29.46\00:06:33.78 loving your neighbor as yourself. 00:06:33.82\00:06:35.11 Of course Paul was dealing specifically in the context 00:06:35.14\00:06:37.48 in Galatians with the way they were treating one another 00:06:37.52\00:06:39.82 and so he highlights the importance of love. 00:06:39.86\00:06:44.46 It is easy for us to get caught up in certain duties. 00:06:44.49\00:06:49.12 Okay I'm not going to steal and I'm not going to lie, 00:06:49.16\00:06:53.04 but in our heart we can harbor malice or bitterness. 00:06:53.08\00:06:56.44 So that was what was happening in Galatia and Paul 00:06:56.48\00:06:59.43 highlighted that as a problem that was going on there. 00:06:59.46\00:07:02.16 Certainly he wasn't negating the importance of the 00:07:02.20\00:07:05.31 Commandments of God anymore than Jesus was right here 00:07:05.34\00:07:08.53 as He talked to this lawyer about the great Commandments. 00:07:08.56\00:07:14.05 If you look back in Galatians in Chapter 5, the apostle 00:07:14.08\00:07:17.93 Paul is beginning to talk about this principle of love, 00:07:17.96\00:07:22.25 which is really only possible through the new birth. 00:07:22.29\00:07:26.69 We can't truly love someone unless we have a union with 00:07:26.72\00:07:31.08 Christ who is love. 00:07:31.12\00:07:32.84 You know that makes me think of this Jim. 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.19 Because it is true as we were just commenting, I've heard 00:07:34.23\00:07:37.55 people say I don't think it is so important that we keep 00:07:37.58\00:07:40.47 the Ten Commandments anymore and usually if I ask why? 00:07:40.51\00:07:43.53 Because it is impossible for us to keep the commandments 00:07:43.57\00:07:46.56 and what we need to do is to just love. 00:07:46.59\00:07:48.82 That betrays the misconception of the carnal mind to 00:07:48.85\00:07:53.75 believe it would be any easier for us to love the way 00:07:53.79\00:07:58.65 God wants us to love, then it would be to 00:07:58.69\00:08:01.06 keep the Ten Commandments. 00:08:01.09\00:08:02.72 It would be easier in a sense, I was going to say would 00:08:02.75\00:08:05.18 be easier to keep the Ten Commandments but the reality 00:08:05.22\00:08:07.62 is it is one and the same. 00:08:07.65\00:08:09.11 Is that love that prompts the true keeping of the 00:08:09.14\00:08:12.56 Commandments and it's impossible for us to love our neighbor as 00:08:12.60\00:08:16.79 ourself unless we have a born-again experience. 00:08:16.83\00:08:20.64 That's right, and that is exactly where the apostle Paul 00:08:20.68\00:08:23.53 goes, and as we continue through this episode and the next 00:08:23.56\00:08:26.16 we are going to see the apostle Paul gets more and more 00:08:26.19\00:08:29.62 practical, helping them to see that this experience of 00:08:29.66\00:08:33.05 the gospel should change the way that they live. 00:08:33.09\00:08:36.00 He draws that out in verse 16 of Galatians 5. 00:08:36.04\00:08:38.89 I would like to read there and it says, "I say then: 00:08:38.92\00:08:41.63 "walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust 00:08:41.66\00:08:44.52 "of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, 00:08:44.56\00:08:47.84 "and the Spirit against flesh; and these are contrary to 00:08:47.88\00:08:50.64 "one another, so that you do not do the things that you 00:08:50.68\00:08:53.41 "wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are 00:08:53.44\00:08:57.01 "not under the law. " 00:08:57.05\00:08:58.70 Now here in these few verses he starts by saying walk 00:08:58.74\00:09:03.02 in the Spirit, so walking denotes in your life a very 00:09:03.05\00:09:07.30 practical instruction that he is giving. 00:09:07.33\00:09:09.31 The way that you live should be in the Spirit. 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.95 He draws this contrast, the Spirit is going to fight 00:09:11.99\00:09:17.18 against the flesh, and the flesh is going 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.65 to fight against the Spirit. 00:09:19.68\00:09:20.95 The idea here is that even for someone who is a converted 00:09:20.99\00:09:23.81 Christian, meaning someone who has been born again 00:09:23.85\00:09:26.89 and have had that change of heart. 00:09:26.93\00:09:28.64 The pride has been subdued, humility has come in 00:09:28.68\00:09:31.54 and they have seen Christ lifted up and they have 00:09:31.58\00:09:34.40 a love and affection for Him. 00:09:34.44\00:09:36.17 Even though that is there, the flesh is still there. 00:09:36.21\00:09:39.63 That carnal selfish heart is still there. 00:09:39.66\00:09:44.24 What it does is that it fights against the divine nature, 00:09:44.28\00:09:48.97 the Spirit of God that is inside of us. 00:09:49.00\00:09:50.89 There is this war, this battle that goes on. 00:09:50.93\00:09:53.67 So whatever happens, whatever choices we have to make in 00:09:53.70\00:09:57.25 life, it is not like we have no resistance from the 00:09:57.28\00:10:01.36 inside, that flesh is still there. 00:10:01.40\00:10:03.47 What the apostle Paul is telling us, walk in the Spirit 00:10:03.51\00:10:07.09 and keep that flesh subdued. 00:10:07.13\00:10:08.86 That's right, in fact we actually see a really clear 00:10:08.90\00:10:11.74 picture of that in Romans 7 where the apostle Paul 00:10:11.77\00:10:14.58 spells this out a little more clearly. 00:10:14.61\00:10:17.33 All he says in Galatians is that the flesh and the Spirit 00:10:17.37\00:10:20.98 are contrary so you don't do the things you want to do, 00:10:21.01\00:10:24.58 or the things you would or wish to do. 00:10:24.62\00:10:27.15 We see that played out in Romans 7:14. 00:10:27.18\00:10:29.64 I'm going to start at first 14 were here Paul says, 00:10:29.68\00:10:33.29 "for we know that the law is spiritual, but I am 00:10:33.33\00:10:36.88 "carnal, sold under sin. " So we already see to contrary 00:10:36.91\00:10:39.39 things, we see spiritual and carnal. 00:10:39.43\00:10:41.55 What happens there? He says, "15. For what I am doing, 00:10:41.58\00:10:46.48 "I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do 00:10:46.51\00:10:51.12 "not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16. If, then, 00:10:51.16\00:10:55.90 "I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it 00:10:55.93\00:11:00.09 "is good. 17. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but 00:11:00.13\00:11:03.75 "sin that dwells in me. 18. For I know that in me (that 00:11:03.79\00:11:07.50 "is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is 00:11:07.54\00:11:11.17 "present with me, but how to perform what is good I do 00:11:11.20\00:11:14.63 "not find. 19. For the good that I will to do, I do not 00:11:14.66\00:11:17.96 "do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. " 00:11:17.99\00:11:21.08 So the whole point Paul is making is he has this internal 00:11:21.12\00:11:24.18 battle, he wants to do right but he does wrong. 00:11:24.21\00:11:27.35 He wants to resist wrong, but he does it anyway. 00:11:27.38\00:11:30.45 He has this conflict and he says in the course of this, 00:11:30.48\00:11:34.53 because the law points out things that he can see are 00:11:34.56\00:11:38.58 wrong he realizes the law is good. 00:11:38.61\00:11:41.02 I agree with the law that it is good, the only problem is, 00:11:41.06\00:11:44.79 and this is interesting, he is not battling against the law 00:11:44.82\00:11:48.09 now, he is not saying I don't think we need to keep the 00:11:48.12\00:11:51.35 law, he realizes we do need to keep the law. 00:11:51.38\00:11:54.24 The only problem is my flesh isn't subject to the law. 00:11:54.27\00:11:58.10 I can't find how to keep the law and so he is stuck in 00:11:58.14\00:12:02.17 this experience where it said in Galatians that the person 00:12:02.20\00:12:06.20 who is led by the Spirit is not under the law. 00:12:06.23\00:12:07.95 We have talked about the person who is under the law, 00:12:07.99\00:12:09.95 under the dominion of sin. 00:12:09.99\00:12:11.24 Romans 6:14 says, you are not under law but under grace, 00:12:11.28\00:12:15.22 sin shall not have dominion over you because you are 00:12:15.26\00:12:19.17 not under law but under grace. 00:12:19.21\00:12:20.57 When sin has dominion over you that means you are 00:12:20.60\00:12:22.91 a slave to sin and what is the description here of 00:12:22.94\00:12:25.22 this man's struggle except that he is a slave. 00:12:25.25\00:12:27.50 He can even do his own will. 00:12:27.53\00:12:28.98 He has to everything his master says, 00:12:29.02\00:12:31.20 and his master is the flesh. 00:12:31.23\00:12:32.68 Wow if you keep reading in this passage it gets even more 00:12:32.71\00:12:38.02 practical, when you look at verse 20 he says, "now if I do 00:12:38.06\00:12:42.50 "what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but 00:12:42.53\00:12:46.80 "sin that dwells in me. 21. I find then a law, that evil 00:12:46.84\00:12:50.36 "was present with me, the one who wills a to do good. 00:12:50.39\00:12:53.54 "For I delight in the law of God according to the inward 00:12:53.58\00:12:56.54 "man. 23 but I see another law in my members, warring 00:12:56.57\00:12:59.20 "against the law of my mind, and bringing me into 00:12:59.23\00:13:01.81 "captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 00:13:01.85\00:13:04.36 "O wretched man that I am! Who would deliver me from this 00:13:04.39\00:13:08.09 "body of death? 25. I thank God-through Jesus Christ our 00:13:08.13\00:13:11.97 "Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of 00:13:12.00\00:13:15.81 "God, but with the flesh the law of sin. " 00:13:15.85\00:13:18.55 Now this is a powerful passage in one of the key points 00:13:18.59\00:13:21.75 here that I would like to draw out is that many people 00:13:21.79\00:13:24.91 read here and say that is me. 00:13:24.95\00:13:28.12 I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 00:13:28.15\00:13:30.83 I will to do good but I'm not. 00:13:30.86\00:13:34.35 That is just like the apostle Paul so that should be just 00:13:34.39\00:13:38.02 fine, in other words my good intentions are really 00:13:38.06\00:13:41.87 all that God needs. 00:13:41.91\00:13:43.14 He knows that inside I know what is right, even though 00:13:43.17\00:13:45.61 I may not be doing right. 00:13:45.65\00:13:47.37 They take Romans 7 as a stopping place. - that's right, 00:13:47.40\00:13:50.60 that's right but we recognize that according to Jesus, 00:13:50.63\00:13:54.29 He says that not everyone says to me Lord, Lord will be in 00:13:54.33\00:13:57.95 the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My 00:13:57.99\00:14:00.43 Father in heaven. 00:14:00.47\00:14:01.44 Good intentions is not exactly what God is seeking for. 00:14:01.45\00:14:04.07 We are going to dive a little deeper into this in just a 00:14:04.10\00:14:06.69 moment, but right now we need to go to break and 00:14:06.72\00:14:08.80 we will be right back with you. 00:14:08.83\00:14:10.07
