Welcome back, you know right before our break Jim, you 00:00:06.16\00:00:09.52 were talking in Galatians 5:5 of how it talks about how 00:00:09.56\00:00:12.75 we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 00:00:12.79\00:00:15.95 - yes! - You know it's powerful about this is we had talked 00:00:15.98\00:00:19.18 just before the break about how the Bible says there is 00:00:19.22\00:00:21.86 no one good, no not one. 00:00:21.90\00:00:23.12 The tendency, especially in our culture today is to feel 00:00:23.16\00:00:26.95 demeaned when it happens. 00:00:26.99\00:00:28.86 We have a hard time saying what do you mean if no one is 00:00:28.90\00:00:31.42 righteous, if no one is good then that means that 00:00:31.46\00:00:33.26 I am not a good person. 00:00:33.29\00:00:34.31 That is exactly right, but here's the beauty of it. 00:00:34.35\00:00:37.35 That is exactly who God offers righteousness to. 00:00:37.39\00:00:40.87 The whole idea is, all have sinned, there is none 00:00:40.90\00:00:43.73 righteous so we are all on the same playing field. 00:00:43.77\00:00:46.53 God says to us if you could recognize that, if you will 00:00:46.57\00:00:49.41 realize that, I have righteousness for you. 00:00:49.45\00:00:53.28 The only righteousness that you can find comes from Me 00:00:53.32\00:00:55.98 and I have it for you. 00:00:56.02\00:00:57.55 It says here, for we eagerly wait for this righteousness. 00:00:57.59\00:01:02.35 In other words it becomes the all-consuming desire of the 00:01:02.39\00:01:06.69 person who realizes their need because it is the only way 00:01:06.73\00:01:11.00 out. - that's right and just because we don't have 00:01:11.04\00:01:14.08 righteousness does not mean we are not valuable to God. 00:01:14.12\00:01:17.99 He paid everything, all of heaven for us, so He is 00:01:18.02\00:01:21.77 helping us to see here that we are bankrupt of what we 00:01:21.80\00:01:25.35 need and He is trying to rescue us by giving us that 00:01:25.38\00:01:28.89 very thing that we need. 00:01:28.92\00:01:30.12 I think of the story - well let me interject for 00:01:30.15\00:01:33.99 a moment, I think of a kitten caught up in the tree and 00:01:34.02\00:01:36.81 you are trying to get the kitten out of the tree. 00:01:36.85\00:01:38.20 Will that poor kitten doesn't always realize you're trying 00:01:38.24\00:01:40.59 to help it, right? 00:01:40.62\00:01:41.93 In the same way this is the picture that God is giving. 00:01:41.97\00:01:44.60 He wants us to see a condition, He didn't make the condition, 00:01:44.64\00:01:48.11 the condition exists. 00:01:48.14\00:01:49.51 This is the condition that we in, we're unrighteous. 00:01:49.55\00:01:52.06 We do not have the righteousness we need to continue and 00:01:52.09\00:01:54.57 so God is trying to make that condition known to us. 00:01:54.61\00:01:56.96 We don't necessarily perceive His goodness in making that 00:01:56.99\00:02:00.60 known, just as a kitten doesn't realize we're trying to help. 00:02:00.64\00:02:04.21 God is trying to bring us into an understanding that 00:02:04.25\00:02:06.85 this is for your good. 00:02:06.89\00:02:08.29 I'm just telling you condition that has already existed 00:02:08.33\00:02:10.49 if you will accept it and receive that, and then 00:02:10.52\00:02:14.58 you can receive My righteousness. 00:02:14.61\00:02:15.95 Amen, you know He had to deal with this along the way 00:02:15.98\00:02:19.97 during His earthly life. 00:02:20.00\00:02:21.46 I remember the story in John 6 when He was telling the 00:02:21.49\00:02:26.25 people that you need Me. 00:02:26.29\00:02:28.02 Unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the 00:02:28.06\00:02:30.38 Son of Man, you have no life in you. 00:02:30.41\00:02:32.23 No righteousness, and many of them walked away because 00:02:32.26\00:02:35.67 it was too offensive to them. 00:02:35.71\00:02:37.32 But Peter, there was an interesting story that happened 00:02:37.35\00:02:40.29 with Peter because Jesus had asked His disciples, 00:02:40.33\00:02:43.96 "Will you also go away?" Peters said, to whom shall 00:02:43.99\00:02:47.58 we go? You have the words of eternal life. 00:02:47.62\00:02:50.53 Peter was essentially saying there is no other place 00:02:50.56\00:02:53.36 that we can go, there is no other place to find 00:02:53.39\00:02:55.96 righteousness, there is no other place where eternity 00:02:56.00\00:02:58.63 can be found or discovered or obtained. 00:02:58.67\00:03:01.59 So Jesus was being revealed to Peter and through Peter 00:03:01.62\00:03:06.75 as the only way. 00:03:06.78\00:03:08.82 That is right and so this is what starts to lead into 00:03:08.86\00:03:11.97 what we are dealing with here. 00:03:12.01\00:03:13.63 This offense of the cross, this offensiveness of the 00:03:13.67\00:03:17.34 cross, the root word there or Greek word is 'scandalon'. 00:03:17.38\00:03:21.02 It's where we get our English word scandal from. 00:03:21.06\00:03:24.02 You know a scandal is something that is a disgrace. 00:03:24.05\00:03:27.61 It is something shameful and this word appears other 00:03:27.64\00:03:31.13 places in Scripture instead of offense as stumbling block. 00:03:31.16\00:03:33.76 And I think you are going to go to one of those places. 00:03:33.80\00:03:38.76 One of those places is 1 Corinthians 1:20 to start with. 00:03:38.80\00:03:43.72 The apostle Paul says, "where is the wise? Where is the scribe? 00:03:48.50\00:03:53.50 "Where's the disputer of this age? Has not God made 00:03:53.53\00:03:56.41 "foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the 00:03:56.44\00:03:59.44 "wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, 00:03:59.48\00:04:02.44 "it pleased God through the foolishness of the message 00:04:02.48\00:04:05.62 "preached to save those who believe. For Jews request a 00:04:05.66\00:04:09.41 "sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ 00:04:09.44\00:04:14.21 "crucified, to the Jews a "stumbling block. " 00:04:14.25\00:04:17.90 So there's the cross, Christ crucified which is an offense, 00:04:17.93\00:04:21.54 it is the same word. 00:04:21.58\00:04:22.55 Right it's an offense it's a scandal, it's a stumbling 00:04:22.59\00:04:25.33 block, "and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those 00:04:25.36\00:04:27.86 "who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power 00:04:27.90\00:04:30.37 "of God and the wisdom of God. 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.55 So we have this idea here that the scandal 00:04:32.58\00:04:36.83 is something shameful. 00:04:36.87\00:04:40.19 Why is it that the Jews would see the 00:04:40.22\00:04:43.14 cross as so offensive? 00:04:43.17\00:04:45.41 Well when you think about the Jews took a lot of pride 00:04:45.45\00:04:47.94 in their position as God's chosen people. 00:04:47.98\00:04:51.39 To think that Jesus was claiming to be the King of the 00:04:51.43\00:04:56.05 Jews, claiming to be the Messiah, their leader, their 00:04:56.09\00:05:00.98 ruler, the representative and that He would be someone 00:05:01.01\00:05:05.87 who has died on a cross. 00:05:05.90\00:05:07.97 The most shameful, the most disgraceful of any possible 00:05:08.01\00:05:12.46 death that could be imposed upon someone. 00:05:12.49\00:05:18.16 That was so unreal to them, they could not fathom why we 00:05:18.20\00:05:22.22 would want to believe in someone who had only brought 00:05:22.25\00:05:26.24 shame and reproach upon them. 00:05:26.27\00:05:27.91 Absolutely, and that's where we find in Romans 9 where 00:05:27.95\00:05:33.28 the same word appears again as stumbling block, translated 00:05:33.32\00:05:37.67 stumbling block, Romans 9 and we have looked at this one 00:05:37.70\00:05:42.02 before Romans 9:30 we will start there. 00:05:42.05\00:05:46.65 The apostle Paul writes, "what shall we say then? 00:05:46.68\00:05:49.72 "That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, 00:05:49.75\00:05:52.72 "have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness 00:05:52.76\00:05:55.58 of faith. " You see this is the whole thing that we see 00:05:55.61\00:05:58.75 here in Galatia is that they were pursuing righteousness. 00:05:58.78\00:06:01.55 The only problem is they were pursuing it in all the wrong 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.55 places, instead of the only place that righteousness can 00:06:04.59\00:06:07.52 come, which he will flush out here in a moment. 00:06:07.55\00:06:10.65 They sought righteousness by other means, they sought 00:06:10.68\00:06:13.82 to be good and become just by other means. 00:06:13.85\00:06:17.20 And so it says, "That Gentiles, who did not pursue 00:06:17.24\00:06:20.65 "righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the 00:06:20.68\00:06:24.24 "righteousness that comes by faith; but Israel, pursuing 00:06:24.27\00:06:27.90 "the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of 00:06:27.94\00:06:31.50 "righteousness. Why?" Because they were trying to keep the law 00:06:31.53\00:06:35.02 That's not what it says is it? You see their whole issue 00:06:35.05\00:06:38.36 wasn't about trying to be good and whole issue was they 00:06:38.40\00:06:41.68 did not seek it by faith in Christ. 00:06:41.71\00:06:43.76 There is nothing wrong, in fact there is everything right 00:06:43.79\00:06:47.17 with seeking to obey the requirements of God, but we have 00:06:47.20\00:06:50.55 to realize that we must have Christ to do it. 00:06:50.58\00:06:53.79 We need that transformation, so he says, "why? Because 00:06:53.82\00:06:56.74 "they did not seek it by faith," why didn't they seek it 00:06:56.78\00:06:59.46 by faith? Notice! "But as it were, by the works of the 00:06:59.50\00:07:02.93 "law. For they stumbled at that" scandalon, at that 00:07:02.97\00:07:06.82 offense, "stumbling stone. As it is written: behold, 00:07:06.85\00:07:10.03 "I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, 00:07:10.07\00:07:13.92 "and whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame. " 00:07:13.95\00:07:17.03 Which is interesting, the word is a word about shame and 00:07:17.07\00:07:19.84 whoever believes on Him it will be just the opposite, 00:07:19.88\00:07:22.62 he will not be put to shame. 00:07:22.65\00:07:23.85 So we come to Chapter 10 - it's almost an encouragement 00:07:23.88\00:07:25.95 to them that think it's shameful to believe on Him and 00:07:25.99\00:07:28.19 if you believe on Me you will not be put to shame. 00:07:28.23\00:07:30.56 That's right, it's absolutely right so notice again in 00:07:30.60\00:07:32.90 verse 3 of chapter 10 where it says, 00:07:32.93\00:07:35.24 "for they being ignorant of God's righteousness. " 00:07:35.28\00:07:38.68 The fact God's righteousness can only come from God. 00:07:38.72\00:07:41.82 "In seeking to establish their own righteousness. " 00:07:41.86\00:07:44.90 See they were obeying and people will say the Jews 00:07:44.93\00:07:47.60 obeyed the law, they obeyed their own idea of law. 00:07:47.64\00:07:50.41 The Bible doesn't call it God's righteousness. 00:07:50.44\00:07:52.75 Up here before we read it being called the 00:07:52.79\00:07:54.99 Ten Commandments the law of righteousness. 00:07:55.02\00:07:57.16 It's a righteous law but "they sought their own 00:07:57.19\00:08:00.65 "righteousness, and have not submitted to the 00:08:00.69\00:08:03.80 "righteousness of God. " And notice verse 4 00:08:03.83\00:08:06.87 "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to 00:08:06.91\00:08:10.59 "everyone who believes. " 00:08:10.62\00:08:11.93 That word end means the outcome, that the end justifies 00:08:11.96\00:08:16.55 the means in that kind of sense. 00:08:16.58\00:08:17.87 In other words, if you are looking for righteousness, 00:08:17.91\00:08:19.78 the final place for righteousness is Christ. 00:08:19.81\00:08:22.75 The end of the law, in other words, the outcome of the law 00:08:22.78\00:08:25.74 when you look at the law of God is a picture of God's 00:08:25.78\00:08:28.22 righteousness, but it is not the actual righteousness. 00:08:28.25\00:08:30.66 Where do you find that? In the person 00:08:30.69\00:08:32.32 of Jesus Christ alone. - Amen, that is powerful. 00:08:32.35\00:08:35.42 You know I think we need to go back to Galatians 00:08:35.45\00:08:38.45 for just a moment, it addresses a question here that we 00:08:38.48\00:08:42.48 haven't fully answered. 00:08:42.52\00:08:43.55 It is back in Galatians 5:11 and it says, 00:08:43.59\00:08:47.52 "and I, brethren... if I still preach circumcision, why do 00:08:47.55\00:08:51.51 "I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the 00:08:51.55\00:08:54.71 "cross has ceased. " 00:08:54.74\00:08:56.52 Something about preaching circumcision would cause the 00:08:56.55\00:08:59.71 offense of the cross to cease. 00:08:59.75\00:09:01.88 What is that? What is it about circumcision and the 00:09:01.92\00:09:04.58 gospel of circumcision, they were promoting, that would 00:09:04.62\00:09:06.90 cause the offense of the cross to no longer be there? 00:09:06.94\00:09:09.13 I think the answer is in what we have been talking about. 00:09:09.17\00:09:11.32 That Christ is the only way. 00:09:11.36\00:09:13.03 The Bible says, Jesus Himself says that I am the way, 00:09:13.07\00:09:16.67 the truth and the life. I am the door. 00:09:16.70\00:09:18.55 There is no other way to come to the Father except through 00:09:18.59\00:09:21.56 Me and so Jesus makes it very clear that there is only one 00:09:21.60\00:09:24.54 way and that is through Him. 00:09:24.58\00:09:25.86 When you preach circumcision now you are preaching you do 00:09:25.89\00:09:29.88 not need to go through Christ, you don't need the process 00:09:29.91\00:09:34.06 of confession and contrition of heart and all that is 00:09:34.10\00:09:38.22 involved in coming to Christ. 00:09:38.25\00:09:39.92 Instead you can very cleanly do something else, maybe 00:09:39.95\00:09:43.24 it's external behavior, in this case circumcision, and 00:09:43.28\00:09:46.51 that replaces and becomes another way there for the cross, 00:09:46.55\00:09:48.94 you can still believe in the cross but it is no longer as 00:09:48.97\00:09:51.33 offensive if you give me another way. 00:09:51.36\00:09:53.63 That's right, it reminds me Jim of that thing I hear 00:09:53.67\00:09:56.33 from some people where Christianity is a crutch 00:09:56.37\00:09:58.86 for weak minded people. 00:09:58.89\00:10:00.34 Christians believe in creation and they have this big God 00:10:00.37\00:10:03.72 because they are narrow minded, or what ever the case 00:10:03.76\00:10:07.53 may be and what it really is vaunting of human pride 00:10:07.57\00:10:11.31 and human righteousness. 00:10:11.34\00:10:12.71 I feel that I don't need Christ because I am better than 00:10:12.74\00:10:16.22 that, and that may be an outside Christianity aspect of 00:10:16.25\00:10:19.69 this, but an insight Christianity aspect is this. 00:10:19.73\00:10:22.39 When the Word of God says something, and this is becoming 00:10:22.43\00:10:26.46 more and more common. 00:10:26.49\00:10:27.46 We say well that is your interpretation and not 00:10:27.50\00:10:29.68 necessarily my interpretation and we start to make 00:10:29.71\00:10:31.86 leeway for doing exactly what God says. 00:10:31.90\00:10:35.13 What we are doing is making another way. 00:10:35.16\00:10:38.32 I know what God says but I don't think it applies to me. 00:10:38.35\00:10:40.90 We are making another way and that is our circumcision. 00:10:40.94\00:10:43.57 Suddenly the offensiveness of Christianity isn't so 00:10:43.60\00:10:46.17 offensive anymore, hey I can become a Christian if I don't 00:10:46.20\00:10:48.39 have to be completely Christian. 00:10:48.42\00:10:50.81 That's right, and the Bible says we can only serve one 00:10:50.84\00:10:53.11 master, we can't serve two masters. 00:10:53.14\00:10:54.49 If you allow them to have many masters then there is a lot 00:10:54.53\00:10:57.65 more adherence to Christianity. 00:10:57.68\00:10:58.83 This idea of the offense of the cross, it really has to 00:10:58.86\00:11:03.92 do with the fact that the cross is about me being 00:11:03.95\00:11:06.85 crucified with Christ and there is a statement out of 00:11:06.88\00:11:09.74 a book I want to share. 00:11:09.77\00:11:10.98 It's called 'The Great Controversy' on this point. 00:11:11.02\00:11:13.21 I thought I would read that to our viewers in closing. 00:11:13.25\00:11:16.39 "A religion of externals is attractive to the un-renewed 00:11:16.43\00:11:19.54 "heart. Thousands who have not an experimental 00:11:19.57\00:11:22.25 "knowledge of Christ will be led to accept the forms 00:11:22.28\00:11:25.11 "of godliness without the power. Such a religion is just 00:11:25.15\00:11:28.07 "what the multitudes desire. To him who loves self- 00:11:28.10\00:11:31.16 "indulgence it is more pleasing to confess to a fellow 00:11:31.19\00:11:34.07 "mortal then to open their soul to God. It is more 00:11:34.10\00:11:37.07 "palatable to human nature to do penitents than to 00:11:37.11\00:11:40.50 "renounce sin. It is easier to mortify the flesh by 00:11:40.53\00:11:43.73 "sackcloth and nettles and galling chains than to 00:11:43.76\00:11:46.93 "crucify fleshly lusts. 00:11:46.96\00:11:48.95 "Heavy as the yoke which the cardinal heart is 00:11:48.99\00:11:51.41 "willing to bear rather than bow to the yoke of Christ. " 00:11:51.45\00:11:54.20 They were willing to be circumcised, even though that 00:11:54.24\00:11:56.93 was a difficult thing, they were willing to do anything as 00:11:56.96\00:11:59.95 long as they didn't have to surrender their cardinal heart 00:11:59.98\00:12:03.24 and crucify the fleshly lusts, the cherished sins that 00:12:03.28\00:12:06.50 perhaps for more precious to them than Christ. 00:12:06.54\00:12:10.06 That's right, there are other experiences where everybody 00:12:10.10\00:12:16.42 follow some of what God says. 00:12:16.45\00:12:18.07 I believe that, everybody follow some of what God says. 00:12:18.11\00:12:22.03 But there are areas that especially tend to be areas 00:12:22.06\00:12:25.92 where we say well I have given up most of the big sins and 00:12:25.95\00:12:28.65 I only have a couple little ones left. 00:12:28.68\00:12:30.21 I would suggest to you that those little ones, those are 00:12:30.24\00:12:33.04 the big ones and that is why you can't give them up. 00:12:33.08\00:12:35.94 What happens is those are the areas where the flesh still 00:12:35.97\00:12:38.80 holds us in its grip. 00:12:38.83\00:12:40.46 Where the fallen nature, our sinful nature still has 00:12:40.49\00:12:43.96 dominion over us and we are slaves of sin. 00:12:44.00\00:12:46.76 What the Lord is trying to do here, what Paul is trying to 00:12:46.80\00:12:49.76 do with the Galatians and the Lord is trying to do for us 00:12:49.79\00:12:54.17 is address that need of a thorough submission to the will 00:12:54.21\00:12:58.15 of God, the accepting of God's will above my own will. 00:12:58.19\00:13:02.10 A total surrender to Christ. 00:13:02.13\00:13:06.10 I want to appeal to you who are watching, lay those things 00:13:06.13\00:13:09.54 aside, lay them at the feet of Jesus and receive 00:13:09.57\00:13:11.91 Him completely into your heart. 00:13:11.94\00:13:14.24
