Welcome to another episode of Books of the Book. 00:00:22.14\00:00:24.84 We are studying the book of Galatians and I am 00:00:24.87\00:00:27.31 Pastor Mark Howard, I'm the Pastor of the Gobels 00:00:27.35\00:00:29.48 Seventh-day Adventist church in Michigan as well as 00:00:29.52\00:00:31.77 Director of the Emmanuel Institute of evangelism, 00:00:31.81\00:00:34.19 a school that trains people to share their faith. 00:00:34.22\00:00:36.57 I'm here at my co-host and brother Jim. 00:00:36.60\00:00:39.04 If my name is Jim Howard and I am the Pastor of the 00:00:39.08\00:00:41.69 Detroit Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist church and 00:00:41.72\00:00:44.30 South Lyon Seventh-day Adventist church also 00:00:44.33\00:00:46.48 in the Michigan conference. 00:00:46.51\00:00:48.19 And we have been studying in the book of Galatians. 00:00:48.23\00:00:51.25 A powerful book in the New Testament and we have had 00:00:51.29\00:00:54.28 a lot of good studies. 00:00:54.32\00:00:55.78 There is a lot packed in this book Jim. 00:00:55.81\00:00:57.17 We are actually up to chapter 5 and if you are watching 00:00:57.21\00:01:01.82 at home, you have your Bibles with you, or a Bible nearby 00:01:01.85\00:01:06.00 grab that in follow us into chapter 5 of Galatians. 00:01:06.04\00:01:09.48 You go to the New Testament Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, 00:01:09.52\00:01:12.78 Acts, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and then Galatians. 00:01:12.82\00:01:16.23 We are going to Galatians Chapter 5 and today we are 00:01:16.27\00:01:20.60 going to pick up their in verse 7 and we will get a 00:01:20.64\00:01:24.95 running start there into what the apostle Paul calls 00:01:24.99\00:01:29.27 the offensive of the cross. 00:01:29.30\00:01:31.99 Galatians 5:7 he says to these Galatian believers, 00:01:32.02\00:01:35.39 "you ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 00:01:35.43\00:01:39.47 "This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. 00:01:39.51\00:01:43.52 "A little leaven leavens the whole lump. I have 00:01:43.56\00:01:47.50 "confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no 00:01:47.54\00:01:51.30 "other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his 00:01:51.34\00:01:54.93 "judgment, whoever he is. 11. And I, brethren, if I 00:01:54.97\00:01:58.46 "still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer 00:01:58.49\00:02:01.91 "persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased. " 00:02:01.94\00:02:05.85 Now there is a lot in there, but we are going to focus 00:02:05.88\00:02:09.75 today on this idea of the offense of the cross. 00:02:09.79\00:02:11.98 Here are the things Jim, that I am picking up on this. 00:02:12.01\00:02:15.91 There's something about the cross that is offensive to 00:02:15.95\00:02:19.81 those that are preaching circumcision. 00:02:19.84\00:02:21.58 Furthermore, persecution is resulting from preaching the 00:02:21.62\00:02:25.33 cross but evidently not from preaching circumcision. 00:02:25.37\00:02:29.00 As Paul says, if I would start preaching circumcision 00:02:29.04\00:02:32.64 I wouldn't be persecuted. 00:02:32.67\00:02:34.57 Preaching circumcision somehow makes the cross 00:02:34.60\00:02:37.69 non offensive and we want to delve into this and find 00:02:37.73\00:02:42.51 out what it is about the cross that is offensive to 00:02:42.54\00:02:47.29 those who preach circumcision and why. 00:02:47.33\00:02:49.30 And what is it about circum- cision that takes away that 00:02:49.34\00:02:53.86 offensiveness to the cross? 00:02:53.90\00:02:55.70 That is important and I think in order to understand 00:02:55.73\00:02:58.62 that, we need to look back to the real meaning of 00:02:58.65\00:03:01.28 circumcision, we have talked about this in previous 00:03:01.31\00:03:03.86 episodes but there is one particular passage that really 00:03:03.90\00:03:06.48 feeds in well to this passage in Galatians 5. 00:03:06.51\00:03:09.08 It is found in Romans 4:9, Romans 4:9. 00:03:09.11\00:03:17.24 right after Acts comes Romans. 00:03:17.27\00:03:19.82 It says, "Does this blessedness then come upon the 00:03:19.85\00:03:24.06 "circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? 00:03:24.10\00:03:28.12 "For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for 00:03:28.16\00:03:31.81 "righteousness. " So he received his righteousness by 00:03:31.84\00:03:35.46 faith. "How then was accounted? While he was 00:03:35.49\00:03:39.08 "circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, 00:03:39.11\00:03:43.88 "but while uncircumcised. And he received the sign of 00:03:43.91\00:03:47.91 "circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith 00:03:47.95\00:03:51.78 "which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might 00:03:51.82\00:03:54.96 "be the father of all those who believe, though they are 00:03:54.99\00:03:58.10 "uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed 00:03:58.13\00:04:01.14 "to them also, and the father of circumcision to those 00:04:01.17\00:04:04.25 "who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk 00:04:04.28\00:04:07.40 "in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had 00:04:07.44\00:04:10.52 "while still uncircumcised. " 00:04:10.56\00:04:12.71 His point is, Abraham received that righteousness that 00:04:12.75\00:04:16.57 was accounted to him prior to being circumcised. 00:04:16.61\00:04:19.77 So circumcision didn't produce the righteousness, that 00:04:19.81\00:04:23.49 is not where he got the righteousness. 00:04:23.53\00:04:24.77 He got it through faith in Christ, the promised sacrifice 00:04:24.81\00:04:29.42 and faith in God's promise. 00:04:29.45\00:04:31.18 In expressing that faith God accounted that to him as 00:04:31.21\00:04:35.09 righteousness, so what was happening in the days of the 00:04:35.13\00:04:38.98 Galatians was that they had perverted the idea of 00:04:39.01\00:04:42.30 circumcision as a sign of righteousness, which is 00:04:42.33\00:04:45.59 obtained through faith. 00:04:45.62\00:04:47.21 Instead of seeking to gain righteousness through faith in 00:04:47.25\00:04:50.88 Christ, they were actually not righteousness by faith 00:04:50.92\00:04:54.51 believers, but righteousness by circumcision. 00:04:54.55\00:04:57.29 I think our viewers may be thinking that is not something 00:04:57.33\00:05:03.95 that is an issue today in our church. 00:05:03.98\00:05:05.79 That is not an issue among believers. 00:05:05.83\00:05:07.57 What is interesting, the reality is that they saw 00:05:07.60\00:05:12.48 something they could do that basically took the place of 00:05:12.51\00:05:17.75 the righteousness of Christ. 00:05:17.79\00:05:19.63 In other words, they didn't need that righteousness of 00:05:19.66\00:05:21.92 Christ because they had circumcision. 00:05:21.95\00:05:24.27 While no Christian would say off-the-cuff, oh yeah I 00:05:24.30\00:05:27.32 don't believe I need the righteousness of Christ, 00:05:27.35\00:05:31.64 we find in our demeanor sometimes, the way we think 00:05:31.67\00:05:35.21 through things that may be just exactly what we are 00:05:35.24\00:05:38.74 thinking, for example. 00:05:38.78\00:05:39.75 In my ministry with the Emmanuel Institute, and I know 00:05:39.76\00:05:43.51 you have done similar things with your church. 00:05:43.54\00:05:45.70 I go out and we share our faith often times from house 00:05:45.73\00:05:48.51 to house, we will go door to door. 00:05:48.54\00:05:49.76 One of the things I have done its survey people about 00:05:49.80\00:05:53.25 their own religious beliefs. 00:05:53.28\00:05:55.02 Whatever they happen to be. 00:05:55.05\00:05:56.71 It is interesting Jim, that not limited to Christians, 00:05:56.75\00:06:00.93 Christians shouldn't even be in the crowd, the reality is. 00:06:00.97\00:06:05.11 But many different religions, Christians included, 00:06:05.15\00:06:09.74 people will say when you ask them about a future life. 00:06:09.78\00:06:13.49 An afterlife, they believe they are going to be a part 00:06:13.52\00:06:17.20 of an afterlife. What gives you that confidence? 00:06:17.23\00:06:20.09 The answer that most people give is, because I am 00:06:20.12\00:06:23.59 a good person, because I do good things, because I do 00:06:23.63\00:06:27.31 thus and so and in reality they don't answer what 00:06:27.35\00:06:30.20 they should answer, even like I said some Christians. 00:06:30.23\00:06:33.91 The answer should be I have accepted Jesus Christ as my 00:06:33.95\00:06:37.61 Savior and He has given His righteousness by faith. 00:06:37.65\00:06:40.38 - yeah that is right. - But when we say because 00:06:40.41\00:06:43.11 I am a good person and do good things what, we are 00:06:43.14\00:06:46.73 actually saying is my basis of my salvation is because 00:06:46.76\00:06:50.31 of my own doings. 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.54 Yeah if someone thinks I am a good person, I help to 00:06:52.58\00:06:56.15 shovel the neighbors walk, or I do kind things at work, 00:06:56.18\00:07:00.14 I'm always friendly and they get a sense of morality that 00:07:00.18\00:07:04.11 just has to do with not being a really bad person. 00:07:04.14\00:07:07.44 For them shoveling the walk is circumcision. 00:07:07.48\00:07:11.20 - that's right! - that's their thing and maybe it is 00:07:11.23\00:07:14.46 just going to church. 00:07:14.49\00:07:16.13 Whatever it is they're certain particular things give them 00:07:16.16\00:07:19.50 confidence that they are okay is their circumcision. 00:07:19.53\00:07:22.18 Not that there's anything wrong with going to church, or 00:07:22.21\00:07:24.76 shoveling a walk just like we have already talked about. 00:07:24.80\00:07:26.95 There is nothing wrong inherently with circumcision, 00:07:26.99\00:07:29.07 but the attitude and the belief that it was their shoveling 00:07:29.10\00:07:32.75 the driveway, helping out in a soup kitchen or what have 00:07:32.78\00:07:36.39 you that made them a good person. 00:07:36.42\00:07:38.72 - right, that's exactly right. 00:07:38.75\00:07:40.98 So we talked about that and you brought this up before in 00:07:41.01\00:07:43.36 Romans 2, maybe we ought to look at this passage. 00:07:43.39\00:07:45.54 Romans 2:25 the apostle makes a point here. 00:07:45.57\00:07:51.28 He says, "for circumcision is indeed profitable if you 00:07:51.32\00:07:55.75 "keep the law, but if you are a breaker of the law, your 00:07:55.79\00:08:00.19 "circumcision has become uncircumcision. " 00:08:00.23\00:08:02.71 Now here is another step to that. 00:08:02.75\00:08:04.30 Sometimes Jim, for example maybe I have some bitterness, 00:08:04.34\00:08:09.56 some grudge against somebody in church. 00:08:09.59\00:08:11.67 Or a neighbor and I go to another neighbor and shovel 00:08:11.71\00:08:14.70 their walk. Then I go down to the soup kitchen 00:08:14.74\00:08:17.70 and help with that. 00:08:17.73\00:08:18.90 And then I say that I am a good person and because I do 00:08:18.94\00:08:23.62 do those things I offset, or excuse myself from doing that 00:08:23.66\00:08:28.31 which I know God requires of me. 00:08:28.35\00:08:30.11 This is what we are talking about when we talk about the 00:08:30.14\00:08:31.91 circumcision here, this whole issue in Galatians. 00:08:31.95\00:08:34.30 They were taking circumcision as a substitute for obeying 00:08:34.34\00:08:38.97 what God had said. 00:08:39.01\00:08:39.98 I keep some of God's Command- ments, I don't really feel 00:08:39.99\00:08:42.36 comfortable with keeping all of them, so I will help out 00:08:42.39\00:08:44.86 a lot in the community. These types of things. 00:08:44.89\00:08:47.28 That circumcision actually becomes, because they don't 00:08:47.31\00:08:52.79 have the substance it actually becomes, the sign becomes 00:08:52.83\00:08:58.27 a meaningless mockery. - yeah, exactly! 00:08:58.30\00:09:01.62 You were talking to me about this fruitless fig tree 00:09:01.65\00:09:04.93 that really pro-trade that. 00:09:04.97\00:09:08.07 Maybe you can make a comment on that. 00:09:08.11\00:09:09.30 The story of the fig tree where Jesus comes by the fig 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.89 tree and there is all these leaves at He goes and looks 00:09:11.92\00:09:14.82 for fruit on it because typically when you come to a fig 00:09:14.86\00:09:17.72 tree and all the fig tree leaves start to fill out 00:09:17.75\00:09:23.29 the plant after the fruit begins to grow. 00:09:23.32\00:09:26.29 So when you see a fig tree full of leaves, it's 00:09:26.32\00:09:30.15 advertising, hey I have fruit on me come have some. 00:09:30.18\00:09:34.03 So Jesus was hungry, He saw the leaves and went over 00:09:34.06\00:09:37.88 and there was no fruit. 00:09:37.91\00:09:40.18 It is the same way when I say I am a Christian, people 00:09:40.22\00:09:43.80 should be able to expect fruit of the tree. 00:09:43.83\00:09:46.05 - right! - people should be able to expect that I 00:09:46.09\00:09:48.29 would live like a Christian and be obedient to the 00:09:48.32\00:09:50.49 principles of God's law. 00:09:50.53\00:09:52.26 But when I make that profession, like the sign of 00:09:52.30\00:09:55.87 circumcision it's profitable if you keep the commandments, 00:09:55.90\00:09:58.65 but if you are not keeping the commandments and your 00:09:58.69\00:10:00.80 heart is not obedient to God then you are advertising 00:10:00.83\00:10:02.90 something you do not have. 00:10:02.94\00:10:04.45 - the heart is exactly the issue there, because what 00:10:04.48\00:10:07.90 was going on here in Galatia is that circumcision was 00:10:07.93\00:10:11.26 something you could do without the heart having to 00:10:11.29\00:10:15.08 be changed, and remember the heart is where the most 00:10:15.12\00:10:18.88 cherished things are held. 00:10:18.91\00:10:20.97 So when we talk about the need for a heart religion, 00:10:21.01\00:10:25.26 it's not just talking about having love for others and 00:10:25.29\00:10:29.51 warmth of affection. 00:10:29.54\00:10:31.19 It is also talking about that which shelters those 00:10:31.22\00:10:35.34 sinful practices that we do not want to let go of. 00:10:35.37\00:10:39.38 So they were looking at circumcision as a way to avoid 00:10:39.42\00:10:43.39 the religion of the heart. 00:10:43.42\00:10:45.53 So the problem was they didn't have that inward 00:10:45.57\00:10:48.70 righteousness because circumcision can't bring 00:10:48.74\00:10:51.83 righteousness. - that's right. 00:10:51.87\00:10:53.51 Righteousness is something that we have to come to 00:10:53.55\00:10:56.31 grips with and it is so crucial, this is what 00:10:56.34\00:10:58.42 Paul keeps bringing up here. 00:10:58.46\00:10:59.67 There is a story in the Bible of the rich young ruler. 00:10:59.70\00:11:03.11 This young man comes to Jesus and he says, good teacher 00:11:03.15\00:11:06.52 what thing must I do, or what things must I do to 00:11:06.56\00:11:09.37 inherit eternal life? 00:11:09.41\00:11:10.66 You find it in Matthew chapter 19 as well as Mark 10. 00:11:10.70\00:11:14.30 What good thing must I do that I might inherit eternal 00:11:14.33\00:11:18.46 life? And Jesus says to him why do you call Me good? 00:11:18.50\00:11:22.59 There is only one who is good and that is God. 00:11:22.63\00:11:25.29 In that statement Jesus was trying to convey to this 00:11:25.32\00:11:28.94 young man that there is no such thing as righteousness 00:11:28.97\00:11:32.21 apart from God, man has no such thing as righteousness. 00:11:32.24\00:11:35.44 Paul makes a point in Romans 3, and this is a hard 00:11:35.48\00:11:40.63 hitting passage for the human heart. 00:11:40.66\00:11:44.38 It is hard for us to take this, we like to say I may 00:11:44.41\00:11:47.89 not be the best person, but don't tell me I'm not a good 00:11:47.93\00:11:51.38 person at all. 00:11:51.41\00:11:52.89 But this is what the Scripture says, this is the condition 00:11:52.92\00:11:54.87 that God pronounces upon you and me. 00:11:54.90\00:11:57.25 He says, Romans 3:10 he says, "As it is written: There is 00:11:57.29\00:12:02.66 "none righteous," it is almost as much as he perceives, 00:12:02.70\00:12:08.04 well he is quoting actually from Isaiah. 00:12:08.07\00:12:10.87 But it is almost as he perceives that we are going to 00:12:10.90\00:12:13.11 rebut that, whoa, whoa, wait a minute. 00:12:13.14\00:12:15.49 Nobody righteous? " No, not one" he says. 00:12:15.53\00:12:17.80 11. "There is none who understands; there is none who 00:12:17.84\00:12:20.29 "seeks after God. 12. They have all turned aside; 00:12:20.33\00:12:22.71 "they have together become unprofitable; there is none 00:12:22.75\00:12:25.71 "who does good, no, not one. " 00:12:25.75\00:12:29.19 The point being made here is man has no righteousness, 00:12:29.22\00:12:33.62 the only place to get righteousness is not in Hindu, 00:12:33.66\00:12:37.90 in a Hindu god, or in Buddha, or in anything else, or 00:12:37.93\00:12:42.14 in some atheistic philosophy. 00:12:42.17\00:12:43.97 The only place to get saving righteousness is in God, 00:12:44.01\00:12:47.23 the God of heaven and His Son Jesus Christ who is 00:12:47.27\00:12:50.46 also the eternal God. 00:12:50.50\00:12:51.62 The idea here is that the Lord would have us understand 00:12:51.66\00:12:55.26 our righteousness is not something that we can produce. 00:12:55.30\00:12:58.52 The only way we can get it is to go to Him to receive 00:12:58.55\00:13:01.69 if by faith. - we must have that union with Christ. 00:13:01.73\00:13:04.83 He is the vine as we talked about once before. 00:13:04.86\00:13:07.16 There is one place in Galatians were this is drawn out. 00:13:07.19\00:13:09.70 Maybe could look at this before we go to our break. 00:13:09.73\00:13:14.04 Galatians 5:5 the apostle says, "For we through the 00:13:14.07\00:13:18.26 "Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness 00:13:18.30\00:13:22.46 "by faith. " I like the way he words that. 00:13:22.49\00:13:24.63 He eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 00:13:24.67\00:13:28.07 Why is he eagerly waiting? Eagerly waiting gives you 00:13:28.11\00:13:30.99 the sense of hungry and thirsting. 00:13:31.03\00:13:32.88 Remember the Bible says, that those who hunger and thirst 00:13:32.92\00:13:35.02 for righteousness they will be filled. 00:13:35.06\00:13:37.31 He says we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness 00:13:37.35\00:13:40.44 how? By faith, faith in Jesus Christ. 00:13:40.48\00:13:43.86 The reason that he is so eagerly waiting is because 00:13:43.89\00:13:46.77 there is nowhere else to get that righteousness. 00:13:46.81\00:13:49.61 He is not going to go somewhere else, he is going to keep 00:13:49.65\00:13:52.64 pressing on, keep pressing the Lord because only through 00:13:52.67\00:13:55.63 the Lord Jesus Christ can he have any hope 00:13:55.66\00:13:57.88 of attaining righteousness. 00:13:57.91\00:13:59.37 Well we will dive back in this a little bit more in 00:13:59.40\00:14:01.80 a moment, but for now we need to take a break. 00:14:01.83\00:14:03.59 We will see you in a few. 00:14:03.62\00:14:04.64
